‘Wandervoegel’

Posted by alex in books, Germany at 8:53 pm | Permanent Link

[From Before the Deluge (Otto Friedrich, Harper & Row: New York, 1972). Friedrich seems to be a jew, certainly exhibits the standard jew biases. Nevertheless, the book’s an interesting compilation of facts and observations about Berlin in the twenties.]

…so it was with the German Youth Movement. It had begun most inconspicuously in 1896, in Steglitz, then a staid middle-class suburb just south of Berlin. There, a twenty-one-year-old youth named Hermann Hoffmann, a student a Berlin University, organized a little group dedicated to self-improvement through the practice of shorthand. When their studies finished, they would go hiking together in the nearby Grunewald Forest. Hoffmann soon faded away , off on a trip to Turkey, but ten of his associates gathered at a Steglitz tavern, drew up a constiution for their hiking society, and named themselves the Wandervögel (roughly, birds of passage). They saluted each other with the word “Heil!”

That was in 1901. Within a dozen years, the movement had spread all over Germany, and the Wandervögel hiked by the tens of thousands to a convocation on the Hohe Meissner, a rain-swept mountain south of Kassel. They lit bonfires, sang songs, recited Goethe, listened to speeches on the German spirit, and generally behaved with the traditional solemnity of youth. The Wandervögel were not originally a political movement — except to the extent that the wandering youths already shared certain political views, ranging from an emotional patritism to an equally emotional mistrust of Jews (and girls). With their banners and songbooks, therefore, they marched off to the slaughter in the trenches of France. “O holy fortune,” one of them wrote of the heroic spirit of 1914, “to be young today!”

Those who survived, and there were not that many, returned to find, as often happens, that the new leaders of the Youth Movement considered them old and irrelevant (there were periodic resolutions to expel everyone over the age of twenty-five, or thirty, resolutions that the aging Wandervögel resisted for dear life). The returning veterans discovered, too, that the Youth Movement had inevitably become a political force, divided by the same political passions that divided the nation as a whole. not entirely, of course. There were some who had just found out about Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophic movement, and others who had gone beyond that to discover, once again, the Wisdom of the East: Zen Buddhism, Taoism, and the preachings of Rabindranath Tagore. Then there were the militant idealists, like the Christian Socialists who called themselves “The Brotherhood,” who established a commune to live off the land (and survived emigrations to England, paraguay, and finally back to post-Hitler Germany). But to be nonpolitical, as George Orwell once wrote, is itself a political act.

The first major conflict divided the pro-Communist youths from those who supported the new Weimar government. The battleground was the major left-wing student group, the Free German Youth, which had been founded in 1913 as a haven for tose who had grown too old for the Wandervögel. At a series of conventions, the students wrangled so fiercely with one another that the group divided forever, splintered and by the end of 1923, it was dead. At that, the Youth Movement gradually came under the control of various right-wing groups that called themselves Bünde. These Bünde were far more political than the old Wandervögel, dedicated to the idea of renovating German society rather than simply escaping from it. The hierarchy was more strictly organized, and the restrictions on Jews (and girls) were more sternly enforced. This was, after all, the era of Stefan George.

It has been said that all young Germans of the 1920’s were influenced by Stefan George “whether or not they had ever heard his name or read a single line he had written.” This is, if true, an odd commentary on any nation, for George seems never to have wanted to convert anyone outside his circle of worshipping students (a circle to which, we recall, the young Joseph Goebbels was not admitted). He did, to be sure, use a wsastika as the symbol of his magazine, Blätter für die Kunst (Papers for Art), which repeatedly advocated the mystical concepts of brotherhood in service under the rule of a true leader. But George himself, though rather overtly homosexual, was scarcely a Storm Trooper. He was a votary of Greece, which he had never seen, and of the Mediterranean spirit. He hated the violence of the war, and when the Nazis finally offered him a high office in the cultural hierarchy of the new Third Reich, the aged poet fled to Switzerland, where he died.

As one considers the various patrons of German youth during the 1920’s, one finds figures far stranger than George. For example: John Hargrave, who had been “commissioner for camping and woodcraft” in the Boy Scouts of Britain. He left the Scouts in 1920 to form his own group, “Kibbo Kift, the Woodcraft Kindred,” which sponsored the building of wigwams, the playing of tom-toms, and other manifestations of frontier skills in the wilds of Europe. This may seem rather exotic, but Hargrave’s movement won the support not only of German frontiersmen but of D. H. Lawrence, Anatole France, and Maurice Maeterlinck. How far is it, then, to Martin Voelkel, a pastor in Berlin, and his belief in “the holy, divine Reich of the German vision, which is everywhere and nowhere,” and his genuflections before the “German trinity,” which was apparently to be defined as God, the I, and the weapon/

In a decade of argument, the German Youth Movement never achieved either unity or mass power. There were a dozen major Bünde, and many minor ones, and the total membership of the independent bunds totaled about sixty thousand (much larger numbers of Germans went on hikes with the youth groups of their churches and labor unions and other established organizations). But the elite groups did have their effect. Youth hostels spread across the country, and many of th eolder Wandervügel went on to become teachers, spreading the gospel among their new pupils. And as the 1920’s passed, the Youth Movement, like the country itself, seemed to become more and more nationalistic. One group called the “Artamans,” for example, worked on the farms of eastern Germany to prevent them from being desecrated by migrant workers from Poland; among these Artamans, in a minor official capacity, was Heinrich Himmler. Other factions, like the Order of Young Germans, concentrated on military training, gunplay, and parades. Prussian traditions were too mild, according to one of the militant leaders; every youth group must become a garrison, every youth a soldier, dedicated to the principles of the Japanese samurai, which he described as “demonic, knightly masculinity.”

It is tempting to draw a line connecting the Wandervögel on their mountaintop to the cheering ranks of the uniformed Hitler YTouth, but th econnection is not so simple. The Hitler Youth was relatively weak throughout the 1920’s, as was Hitler himself, and indeed the Führer used the term “Wanderv” as an insult. When he came to power, he disbanded the Bünde and threw a number of their leaders into prison. Are we justified, then, in indicting the prisoners for the misdeeds of their jailer? Perhaps we are, to some extent, for the evidence indicates that it was Hitler, the necromancer of the lower orders, who rejected these hero-worshipping students, and not they who rejected him. And although many prim an dstiff-collared teachers had perverted the whole process of education, the history of the Youth Movement suggests that the young were quite capable, without any teachers, of miseducating each other.

After more than a decade of drill and discipline, then, the young German was ready to confront the uncertain winds of the university. But by now, he was indeed ready. “In a big-city university like Berlin, about two-thirds of the students were already committed to the right,” says Professor Lowenthal. “Only 20 or 25 percent were liberal or Social Democrats. That left us, the radicals, about 5 percent, at the most. And we were not really very radical at all. It would never occur to us to interrupt a lecture, or insult a professor, the way they do nowadays. The only ones who did that were Nazis.”

[…]

“How was it that the Nazis could appeal so strongly to young students, when one usually thinks of young people as idealistic?”

“Because the Nazis were idealistic too,” says Professor Lowenthal, former leader of the Communist youth movement, sipping coffee. “They promised national unity and national resurrection. And there was that basic German romanticism — you know — you know the difference between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft? The first is a medieval concept, a society in which everyone competes against the others for his own good. There was a widespread feeling that this was unGerman, that it had been imposed by foreigners. There was some truth to this too. Capitalism did come from outside because Germany was so backward, and democracy was brought in by the armies of Napoleon. The whole German romantic movement was a criticism of that, and this is still true for the young radicals of today.

“So the Nazis promised an alternative to what they called the corrupt plutocratic system. And everybody wanted to believe them.”  [pp. 243-47]

Grim Realism Must Replace Greed For Glory
      (Apollonian, 20 Apr 06)

So perhaps the moral of the essay above is that no overwhelming mass movement can be truly successful without significant funding behind it, eh?–which is why we whites still gotta suffer for a good while, the foreseeable future. History is determined, and we gotta suffer through a still-continuing “Decline of the West,” eh? The stupid shits fm the elder generation who murdered the Germans of WWII gotta just die out and off. Something has to be done about the present “Judeo-Christians” (JCs) too. People have to drop “moralism” (and Pelagian heresy) and start thinking, almost desperately, simply in terms of white survival. We gotta leave off with the Wagnerian music surrounding the glorious hero crap, and simply acknowledge the bleakness and grimness of it all. Honest elections and death to the Fed. A.

    2. Elite Aryan Crack Smoker Says:

Well, the funding for our liberation – however it happens will come from leaderless *economic* resistance, to begin with anyway. You guys just got to learn to live an anti-soviet *lifestyle*; secede from support of the Judensphere and let the empowerment begin with the individual, so that he can afford to support the group interest.

What’s more noteworthy about this essay is that it addresses the inter-war period. And I’m quite surprised that the whole modern “Seig Heil” movement of Third Reich rehabbers doesn’t address the Jewish predations of the Weimar era. Just what *did* the Jewsters do that triggered the National Socialist backlash? I’ve never seen a substantive treatment of this subject. (Sources please.) I don’t want to hear this, “Hitler was right. Hitler is god” shit; I want to know what the Jews did in 1920’s Germany that pissed everybody off. I already know about the Versaille Treaty… what else?

    3. Carpenter Says:

Boy, do you got a lot to learn, sweetie. And still you do all that huffing and puffing, pretending you da man.

Jews dominated the media, Jews like Rosa Luxembourg dominated the communist movement, Jews owned most of the theaters. You pretend we owe you a full description with sources, but big surprise, you should do the research on your own like the rest of us. Lazy bastard. First go read David Irving’s two books on Goebbels, and don’t talk about what “shit” you don’t want to hear before you know as much as the rest of us. You have just admitted to your ignorance, so now it’s time for some serious humility on your part.

    4. Carpenter Says:

An interesting essay. There is a lot to learn in this paragraph alone:

Anyway, fascinating that about two thirds of the students belonged to the Right, and we are talking a real Right here, with only a quarter or a fifth being liberals or social democrats. What has changed? The Frankfurt School and other Jews ruthlessly took over social studies at American universities, where White professors foolishly let them in and allowed them to speak on equal terms. The media supported them, of course, which was crucial. With the defeat of Germany, the Frankfurt School’s anti-White, anti-traditional ideas became the orthodoxy all over the West, and so it remains, textbooks in sociology still referring unflinchingly to the Frankfurtian Marxists today. I have read an account by a man who was a student in Portugal in the years after WW II, describing the influx of new dogma even in that neutral country. It seemed more than likely that the USSR would take over Europe one day, so the right was demoralized and the left was bold and vicious as ever in the Portuguese campus.

      But I digress.

The Soviet manual on brainwashing says: you need to control the youth, for they are tomorrow’s leaders. The importance of youth is what I take with me from this essay. The young don’t yet have children to raise, which takes so much of your time and makes you vulnerable. They have the time and the energy to work for political change.

Sixty thousand Wandervögel … even if they weren’t very political, it sure would have been pleasant to take part in something like that, wouldn’t it? Seems better than a whole lot of stuff twentysomethings waste their time on today. Imagine what we have lost.

    5. Elite Aryan Crack Smoker Says:

      Attention, Carpenter:

It doesn’t matter how much *you* and your nostalgic, self-marginalized and powerless cult “know” – I’m asking on behalf of half a billion White people who don’t know about what I asked. If they *did* know, they’d be motivated to go out and do something about it… which your ultramarginalized melange of whiny goosesteppers has been unable to do for some sixty years now.

    6. Angle Says:

      1. The Zionist Balfour Treaty lost Germany the war by pitting America against Germany.
      2. Many Jewish bankers were among the very, very few who profitted during the Depression.
      3. Jew Rathenau, WWI Armaments Minister, was considered a traitor, rightly or wrongly.
      4. ‘Weimar decadence’ was seen as an insult to the virtues of the German war cause.
      5. Jews like Einstein fled to Switzerland to avoid national service while German youths perished in the millions.
      6. Spartacist Jews like Liebknecht, Paul Levi, avoided frontline duties and tried to break Bavaria off from Germany, overthrow its German government and replace it with a Communist Soviet in 1919 when the German troops were returning.
      7. Jew Kuhn unleashed bloody revolution in nearby Hungary in 1919.
      8. Jews were powerful in entertainment and were perceived to basically ‘own’ female German entertainers in return for furthering careers (same in Hollywood, as Marilyn Monroe attested).
      9. Negro troops were among those used to man the Occupation of the Rhineland.
      10. France attempted to steal the Ruhr and Saarland off an allied-enforced demilitarised Germany in the 30s.

    7. Theseus Says:

      Crack, look around you.

      They were doing that.

    8. Carpenter Says:

Oops, seems I hit a sore spot there. All right cracky, I can tell you’re just aching to start a little flaming to prove your superiority, so go right ahead. And forget about the humility part, I can tell you don’t know what it means.

    9. Carpenter Says:

Angle, that’s a pretty good list. Bottom line is that Jews were behind communism, in the East and in Germany. Their attempt to take control of Bavaria, which they did for a few days of blood and gore, proved what they planned for all Germans.

The Weimar Republic was a decadent hole in the ground, kind of like the ‘Kwa today. Jews loved it; read how Jewish journalists describe it today, with dreaming language like it was heaven. It was their media that created it, just like they created the ‘Kwa today. Hitler was also fully aware of what they were doing to American culture, elevating the Negro out of its place through entertainment, and all of that was exported to Europe.

Anyone who has read Mein Kampf will know exactly what Hitler’s arguments were. Then again; lazy, shrill weirdos think themselves far too superior to read up on Hitler’s motivations from the man himself.

    10. Carpenter Says:

Funny tidbit: there was only one racial delegation to the Versailles conference. While the other delegations represented a country, the Jews had their own representatives. A little piece of information that the history books usually forget. Organized? Noo, how can you say that.

What an alien presence they were then, and are now. Compare the Jews running their burlesque bars in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, to these German Wandervögel seeking a connection to nature. Which group would you rather have as your friends?

    11. Steven Clark Says:

I’ve read a couple of books by Otto Friedrich, including BEFORE THE DELUGE. I don’t know if he’s a Jew, but he hates Germans, said his father left Germany to escape the Nazis. In CITY OF NETS, his book on Hollywood in the forties, Friedrich takes the standard communist line, and idolizes Brecht. That being said, he’s a good writer and has a lot of interesting bits worth reading. One note: when his sister Liesl died as a child, his father stayed by her body during the funeral, playing over and over the third movement from Beethoven’s 7th symphony on a phonograph. Strange. Despite the German bashing, Friedrich and his father tied to German life.

    12. alex Says:

Good answers. The short answer, as Theseus says, is whatever they’re doing today in America that normal whites don’t like they were doing yesterday in Germany. They owned almost all the major press, occupied the top school slots. But one can go on about that with stats and such, but the thing is they controlled the feel of the country. Their satirists were endlessly mocking the military and ordinary middle-class Germans and rubbing their noses in increasingly bizarre forms of “art” and pornography. Yet no one could laugh at them. Again, exactly as it is today in America. Even down to the attempt to destroy the body racially with niggers, as Angle mentions. The nazis found a way to deal with the jews, and that is why the nazis are #1 unchallenged on the jewish demonization list. A very, very, very big cue for us who would overthrow jewish dictatorship in our lands.

    14. Arminius Says:

One fact is unfortunately overlooked here:
The enormous CULTURAL influene the “wandervogel” had on the White race! Yes, to this day, and accepted by others in the world!
Wandervogel enthusiasts introduced the (colored) open shirt with soft collar (as opposed to the stiff, starched, white “father killer” worn by all “decent” men to WW1). They invented the “shorts” for all men, swimming naked in rivers and lakes (a crime in those days), slept in the open during their hikes. They marked wander-trails through every beautiful landscape, again today emulated in every white nation by nature-lovers. They revived forgotten (heathen) folk-dances, recitals of poets as was the custom of German ancestors (“Bardenlieder”). Certainly they were patriotic, race-conscious, idealistic.
One has to compare the youth movement of 100 years ago with the pathetic filth, the drug problem, the emptiness dominating the young poeple of our days, to recognise that a sinister conspiracy is doing everything to destroy all that our race has achieved.
