But with the bubble economy has come a huge change in corporate governance. Quite simply, there are easier ways for corporate executives and shareholders to
extract profits from the financial system than from long-term investment.

It will only cease to expand when the banks creating new credit start to experience losses on their own balance sheets.

Sailor to face prosecution on charges of espionage

NORFOLK – A young submariner accused of espionage and desertion will face a general court-martial, a top Navy official has decided.

Adm. John B. Nathman, commander of the Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, approved the prosecution of six charges against Petty Officer 3rd Class Ariel J. Weinmann, the Navy said Friday.

Weinmann has been held in the Norfolk brig since April. A date for the court-martial has not been set. A general court-martial is the most serious of three types of courts-martial.

The four-star admiral’s ruling follows a two-day preliminary hearing in Norfolk in late July, when Navy prosecutors first presented evidence against the sailor.

Weinmann, a fire control technician, was picked up March 26 by customs officials at a Dallas airport on an arrest warrant for desertion. He is accused of leaving his post on the Connecticut-based submarine Albuquerque in July 2005.

A customs agent’s search of his belongings led to suspicions that Weinmann might have been involved in more than desertion, according to testimony at the July hearing.

Testimony also stated that Weinmann was discovered carrying $4,000 cash, three CD-ROMs, an external computer storage device and memory cards for storing digital images.

The 21-year-old sailor from Oregon then was flown from Dallas to Norfolk, where over eight days in April he was interrogated by Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents and the FBI.

According to a document the Navy released Friday, Weinmann was charged on April 18 with desertion, failure to properly safeguard classified material and communication of classified information relating to national defense to a representative of a foreign government.

He also was accused of making an electronic copy of classified defense information and knowingly communicating secret information to a person not entitled to receive it.

The Navy has not identified what country or countries Weinmann is accused of contacting.

After his arrest, NCIS agents traveled to Vienna, Austria, where Weinmann had been living, and Mexico City. The Navy suspects he passed information to a foreign government representative in both places.

Two additional charges were filed against him in July, a week before his preliminary hearing, or Article 32, as it is known in military parlance.

Those charges accuse him of stealing a laptop computer from the Albuquerque in 2005 and destroying its hard drive in March 2006.

Congressman Ron Paul Reiterates Danger Of Foreign Troops Being Used For Martial Law

Speaks out on phony UN-US dog and pony show, EPA testing pesticides on children

Republican Congressman Ron Paul recently appeared on nationally syndicated radio and again reiterated his deep concern that foreign troops are mobilizing outside and inside America to be used as assets in a martial law takeover by the Bush administration.

“It’s a horrible precedent and it’s all part of the NAFTA scheme and globalization and world government,” Paul told the Alex Jones Show.

“Obviously they shouldn’t be permitted. What I’d like to see is that we don’t have our troops in foreign countries and if we needed a national guard that they were back here at home, that’s the bigger problem. Then if there were foreign troops on our soil maybe our state officials could deal with that with their own national guard.”

Paul elaborated on his fear that after the next crisis the government, in line with their own public statements, will use military assets to police Americans on a regular basis.
“They’re putting their back up against the wall and saying, if need be we’re going to have martial law.”

“We’ve heard all these statements by the President, by the administration, why they need more militarism at the federal government to keep people in check so nobody knows how this will turn out but I do know that the only thing we can do about it is try to alert the American people to what’s going on so they can be prepared.”

Paul offered his take on why the government seemed to be acting in a deranged and reckless manner on every issue.
“It’s almost like they’re going overboard that they lose their rationality and that’s part of the reason why they usually fail too is they get overly bold and I think our government is overly bold thinking they are invincible and they feel invincible with their finances. Our government controls the reserve currency of the world, they literally have the ability to print gold.”

In light of recent shocking rulings that authorize the EPA to conduct tests on orphan and mentally disabled children using pesticides, Paul made comparisons with a proposed universal mental screening program that he previously had helped defeat.

“I really thought that mental health testing and drugging was so evil and horrible, but this I think could even be a little bit worse when they talk about testing these kind of chemicals. But that’s just confirmation once again that we as a country have been careless and we’ve allowed our government to act as parents for the children and, in spite of the shortcomings of some parents, parents do a much much better job.”

Talking about children being in government care being five times more likely to be abused and Congressmen voting for those kind of measures, Paul stated,
“The results are so horrible you’d think maybe a little bit of logic would cause them to rethink their position but it doesn’t seem to happen.”

On the subject of his drive to get the US out of the UN, Paul pointed out the staged good cop, bad cop nature of the US-UN relationship.

“The Bush administration started bashing the UN and threatening the UN with cutting some of the funding but it was all a game they were playing because they literally gave the UN more power in the name of a reform.”

“Who do we have at the UN, Bolton, the arch Neo-Con warmonger and actually what they’ve done is taken the Neo-Con position on intervening on the internal affairs of other nations and regime change and they’ve institutionalized that in the United Nations, now the UN is in the business of regime change.”

Imagine gazing at the Caribbean’s turquoise waters from a hammock strung between two palm trees. The hotel chefs who offered either fresh lobster or shrimp for dinner will soon bring the dishes to the beach. Cocktails are quickly refreshed.

An ideal, relaxing vacation — in Haiti.

That’s the image a South Florida company wants travelers to have in mind.

“Visit Haiti. Don’t listen to what you see on the news,” says Wilfrid Belfort of MWM & Associates in North Miami Beach, which posts details of the trips at http://www.tohaiti.com. “Visit Haiti, because you are the only one who can save Haiti right now.”

Recent news from Haiti does not promise relaxation: Gang violence and kidnappings have surged in the capital of the Western hemisphere’s poorest country.

But Belfort’s Haitian-American-owned company sees increasing tourism as Haiti’s best chance to improve its crippled economy and finally achieve political stability — a plan Haiti’s new president also proposed at a Florida tourism conference in June.

Just 112,000 tourists visited Haiti last year while 4 million came to its Hispaniola neighbor, the Dominican Republic, President Rene Preval said at the conference hosted by MWM.

The company offers all-inclusive, four-day getaway packages to Cap-Haitien on Haiti’s north coast, Cotes des Arcadins on the central coast and Jacmel and Ile-a-Vache in the south. One upcoming package goes for $499 per person including airfare.

Ads promoting a “Secret Paradise” in Haitian-American media and on Miami billboards aren’t aimed at adventure tourists or travelers participating in community service. MWM arranges tours for traditional beachgoers expecting room service, lounge chairs and drinks with umbrellas; the trips also include guided sightseeing and nighttime dancing.

Theonne Armand’s hotel room balcony overlooked the beach in Jacmel and tour guides introduced her to local artists creating masks for upcoming carnival celebrations when she joined an MWM tour in January. She was born in Saint-Marc, Haiti, but had never traveled to the southern coast.

“Everything worked out good, price-wise and the place and the accommodations,” said Armand, a 50-year-old nurse who now lives in Loxahatchee. “I felt it was very, very safe. Everything you hear is not happening in Jacmel. It’s quiet.”

But an unstable country dotted with exclusive resorts does not appeal to Kevin Danaher of San Francisco-based Global Exchange, which stopped offering its immersion tours to Haiti after former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide’s ouster in 2004.

“We’re looking forward to going back when it’s safe,” Danaher said. “We don’t believe in enclave tourism, because it doesn’t show people what the country is really like.”

Most tourists will likely heed a U.S. State Department warning discouraging travel to the Caribbean nation. More than 50 Americans, including children, have been kidnapped in Haiti in the past year, the agency says.
