TEHRAN — In the wake of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s call for an independent investigation of the so-called Holocaust, an interim committee has been formed to study Jewish allegations.

General secretary of the new group, the International Holocaust Research Committee, is Dr. Mohammad Ali Ramin. Named to serve with him are a number of academics and
historical revisionists, including Dr. Christian Lindtner of Denmark, Lady Michele Renouf of the United Kingdom, Bernhard Schaub of Switzerland, Dr. Serge Thion of France, and Dr. Frederick Töben of the Adelaide Institute in Australia.

The committee has been assigned a threefold purpose:

1. to constitute an objective, impartial truth-seeking body to investigate the alleged Holocaust;

2. to establish an international justice commission for determining penalties to be imposed upon those found guilty of perpetrating the “Holocaust” accusation, should it be proved to be false, to determine those reparations to be paid to any unjustly accused, as well as to determine the form of punishment for those found guilty of false accusation; and

3. To prepare the next international Holocaust review conference.

VATICAN CITY — The Holy See considers the Holocaust of the Jews during World War II as an “immense tragedy” whic must be a “warning” to consciences.

So says a press statement issued today by the Vatican press office, a day after the opening in Tehran, Iran, of a conference that questioned the Holocaust.

The forum was organized under the sponsorship of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who in a televised speech last December labeled the Jewish Holocaust a “myth.”

Today’s press statement ratifies the Holy See’s position, expressed on March 16, 1998, with the document of the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, entitled “We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah.”

The Vatican press statement explains that “The past century witnessed the attempt to exterminate the Jewish people, with the consequent murder of millions of Jews, of all ages and all social categories, for the sole fact of belonging to this people.”

“The ‘Shoah’ was an immense tragedy, before which it is not possible to remain indifferent,” the text says.

Hence “[t]he Church has a profound respect and a great compassion for the experience lived by the Jewish people during World War II,” it states. “The memory of those terrible events must be a warning leveled at consciences to eliminate conflicts, respect the legitimate rights of all peoples and exhort to peace, in truth and in justice.”

“This position,” concludes the communiqué, “was affirmed by Pope John Paul II at the Yad Vashem Monument to Memory in Jerusalem, on March 23, 2000, and confirmed by His Holiness Benedict XVI during the visit to the Auschwitz extermination camp on May 28, 2006.”

Australian Jews Show Their Commitment to Democracy

Dr. Frederick Toben, a leading Australian holocaust hoax revisionist who attended the holocaust conference in Teheran, faces legal action by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) upon his return from that conference.

The ECAJ is launching legal action against the Adelaide Institute’s director for allegedly “failing to obey a court order to remove anti-Semitic material from his website.”

In a ruling in 2002, a Federal Court of Australia judge ordered Dr Toben to remove anti-Jewish material from his website. Justice Catherine Branson ordered the removal of the material, claiming it was likely to “offend, insult, humiliate and intimidate” Australian Jews, and banned him from republishing any similar material anywhere on the internet or by any other means.

The judgment stated that should Dr Toben continue to publish the material, he would be found guilty of contempt of court, an offence that could result in a jail sentence. ECAJ president Grahame Leonard said the new material was “more of the same” Holocaust-denial propaganda.

The ECAJ’s national Report on anti-Semitism in Australia, which was tabled at last week’s annual conference by its author, Jeremy Jones, reported increases in web-based anti-Semitism, including on popular video site YouTube.

A memorial service for Majok Thiik Madut, the 26-year-old Sudanese refugee shot to death in Cleveland, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Carey Funeral Home, 6318 Lorain Ave.

Detectives still don’t know who killed Madut Monday night as he waited for a bus near Addison Road and St. Clair Avenue.

Madut came to Cleveland with 36 other refugees in 2001 under a U.S. State Department relocation program. The war in Sudan displaced more than 4 million people. About 4,000 of them came to America and Canada. They became known as the Lost Boys, a reference to Peter Pan’s fatherless youth.

A funeral mass for Madut will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Colman’s Church, 2027 West 65th Street. Madut will be buried at Calvary Cemetery on Miles Avenue. The Callistian Guild, a nonprofit group of funeral-related businesses, is covering the expenses.

I SIGNED A CONTRACT with Simon & Schuster two years ago to write a book about the Middle East, based on my personal observations as the Carter Center monitored three elections in Palestine…

The many controversial issues concerning Palestine and the path to peace for Israel are intensely debated among Israelis and throughout other nations — but not in the United States.

For the last 30 years, I have witnessed and experienced the severe restraints on any free and balanced discussion of the facts. This reluctance to criticize any policies of the Israeli government is because of the extraordinary lobbying efforts of the American-Israel Political Action Committee and the absence of any significant contrary voices.

It would be almost politically suicidal for members of Congress to espouse a balanced position between Israel and Palestine, to suggest that Israel comply with international law or to speak in defense of justice or human rights for Palestinians. Very few would ever deign to visit the Palestinian cities of Ramallah, Nablus, Hebron, Gaza City or even Bethlehem and talk to the beleaguered residents.

What is even more difficult to comprehend is why the editorial pages of the major newspapers and magazines in the United States exercise similar self-restraint, quite contrary to private assessments expressed quite forcefully by their correspondents in the Holy Land.

…Although I have spent only a week or so on a book tour so far, it is already possible to judge public and media reaction. Sales are brisk, and I have had interesting interviews on TV, including “Larry King Live,” “Hardball,” “Meet the Press,” “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer,” the “Charlie Rose” show, C-SPAN and others.

But I have seen few news stories in major newspapers about what I have written.

Book reviews in the mainstream media have been written mostly by representatives of Jewish organizations who would be unlikely to visit the occupied territories, and their primary criticism is that the book is anti-Israel.

Two members of Congress have been publicly critical. Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for instance, issued a statement (before the book was published) saying that “he does not speak for the Democratic Party on Israel.” …Alan Dershowitz called the book’s title “indecent.”

Out in the real world, however, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I’ve signed books in five stores, with more than 1,000 buyers at each site. I’ve had one negative remark — that I should be tried for treason — and one caller on C-SPAN said that I was an anti-Semite.

My most troubling experience has been the rejection of my offers to speak, for free, about the book on university campuses with high Jewish enrollment and to answer questions from students and professors.

…The book describes the abominable oppression and persecution in the occupied Palestinian territories, with a rigid system of required passes and strict segregation between Palestine’s citizens and Jewish settlers in the West Bank.

An enormous imprisonment wall is now under construction, snaking through what is left of Palestine to encompass more and more land for Israeli settlers. In many ways, this is more oppressive than what blacks lived under in South Africa during apartheid.

…the motivation is …the desire of a minority of Israelis to confiscate and colonize choice sites in Palestine, and then to forcefully suppress any objections from the displaced citizens.

…in (Arab) East Jerusalem…under severe Israeli restraints, only about 2% of registered voters managed to cast ballots (in the last election)…

Israel on thinning ice?

I’m worried about Israel. It’s a state I’ve always admired and for which I have nothing but the best wishes.

But I’m afraid Isreael is becoming a victim of the same kind of myopia we’re currently suffering from in this country.

Israel has always enjoyed what I believe to be a well-deserved reservoir of good will in the West because of the horrors of the Holocaust, and has enjoyed support through the years partially based on that good will.

However, nations, over time, always place their own self interests above all else. The unfortunate fact is that, in terms of realpolitick, Israel is not inherently – by reason of location, resources, markets, or export of unique goods – a vital security interest of any of its allies. Yet it continues to behave as if it is.

That’s the myopia.

Directly attacking the source of a part of the good will Israel enjoys, Iran is holding its Holocaust Conference intended to cast doubt on the validity of part of the sources of good will.

This is not some loony event dreamed up by a mad ruler. This is a calculated state policy designed to begin chipping away at part of what Iran rightly sees as an important element of Israel’s legitimacy with Western powers.

Given the currently rapidly changing dynamics in the Middle East caused in part by the Israeli incursion into Lebanon, but mostly by our own incursion into Iraq, the calculations of Western nations with regard to their best interests in the Middle East inevitably must be put under review.

I sincerely hope that Israeli leaders recognize this blunt truth. They need to act while there is still time to find a way to reach accomodation with the Palestinians. They are going to have to swallow the bitter pill of the consequences of their abortive Lebanon adventure just as we will have to somehow deal with the fruits of our incursion into Iraq.

But deal, they must.

I used to visit Israel rather frequently, but lost my enthusiasm for those visits gradually in the 1990s.

It felt, more and more, as if Israel as a nation turned her back to the values of the civilized West, and the nations sharing these values. In doing so, I felt Israel being digging her grave – and it’s depressing me that I can do nothing about it.

Regarding Iran, I am not convinced your interpretation of the actual Holocaust Conference is quite to the point. I do not think it influences an audience that have had any goodwill left for Israel.

I would rather think that the Iranian step has to do with point scoring competition between different governments (and strains of Islam) in the region.

DOUBLE STANDARDS

Why is it that exposing elements of racial or religious hatred among extremist Christians deserves praise but exposing it among Jews deserves jail?

Why is exposing White extremism called “love” but exposing Jewish extremism is called “hate?”

Why is it called hate to expose the fact that Israel is a Jewish supremacist, Apartheid nation of segregation of Jews from non-Jews? Why is it called hatred to expose the fact that in Israel marriage between a Jew and Gentile is against the law?” Why is it called hatred to expose the fact that Israel is a Jewish supremacist nation that limits immigration only to Jews? Why is it called hatred to expose the fact that Israel routinely tortures thousands of Palestinians each year but will never do so to a Jew, for any crime?

Why is called hatred to expose the fact that Jews in Israel have stolen huge swaths of Palestinian land and oppressed, tortured, and murdered thousands of Palestinians in the occupied territories? Why is it called hatred to point out that Jewish supremacist Neocons such as Wolfowitz, Perle, Feith, Wurmser and Libby lied to the world about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and have led the efforts for the murderous Iraq War resulting in the deaths of at least 100,000 and a rise in world terrorism and hate?

Why is it called hatred to tell the obvious truth that the Iraq War is a war conceived and driven by Jewish supremacists – a war for Israel? Why is it hatred to point out that Jewish Neocons seek to exacerbate relations between the Christian and Islamic world and wash the world in blood in what they call proudly World War IV? Canada oh Canada, fellow students and faculty, where is the freedom of our fathers?

Where has gone the most important of human rights, Free Speech, the right upon which all other rights are hinged?

An offensive conference, by an offensive regime

As if to declare its bravura defiance of what the West considers to be fundamental civilised values, Iran has convened a Holocaust denial conference. The title given to this assemblage, “Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision”, combines two essential elements. The word “review” suggests historical revision of the accepted version of events, and the phrase “global vision” implies that such a revisionist account is acceptable in many parts of the world that do not subscribe to the European historical orthodoxy.

The official Iranian justification for this gratuitous event is that it is an exercise in “free speech” that flouts European standards in the same way as the publication of cartoons that allegedly insulted the Prophet flouted Muslim sensibilities. In spite of the fact that attendees at this convention include Westerners who have been known to cast doubt on the truth of the Holocaust, Iran’s foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, has stated that the aim is neither to “confirm nor deny” but to “create an opportunity for thinkers who cannot express their views freely in Europe” about the Jewish experience under Nazi occupation. The only people to whom that description applies are those who deny the Holocaust: a view that it is indeed illegal to express in many countries in western Europe.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran has personally endorsed this two-day meeting, which is taking place at an Iranian foreign ministry institute with the full imprimatur of his government. He has made it a hallmark of his political regime not only to declare political opposition to Israel, but also to threaten its existence in the most lurid and bellicose terms. He has also explicitly linked Jewish experiences during the Second World War with what he describes as the “occupation of Palestinian land” in Israel.

Mr Ahmadinejad is apparently so eager to justify his bloodthirsty threats against Israel, and to provoke outrage in Europe and the United States, that he blithely shifts his ground on the matter of historical truth. While he has, on some previous occasions, labelled the Holocaust a “myth”, he has at other times suggested that the persecution and murder of six million Jews did, in fact, take place – but that it was a European crime for which Palestinians have had to pay the price.

Inconsistency may seem to be the least of Iran’s offences, but it is testimony to the irrationality and instability of a regime that some in Washington and London seem to believe may be trusted to participate in achieving a just and peaceful settlement in Iraq.

What should surely be occurring to any responsible observer of this appalling conference, which has gathered together notoriously anti-Semitic figures from all over the world, is that Iran under its present leadership is a dangerously hateful and malevolent force whose intentions in the Middle East can never be other than malign and destabilising.
Israel’s Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem has condemned a conference which opened in Iran on Monday that will allow researchers to question the mass slaughter of Jews during World War II.

“Yad Vashem is following with increasing concern Iran’s continued Holocaust denial, and particularly its latest attempt to paint its extremist agenda with a scholarly brush,” the museum said in a statement.

“The Iranian government’ pseudo-academic conference, ’Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision’, is an effort to mainstream Holocaust denial and must be unequivocally rejected,” it said.

Iran says that nothing will be taboo at the conference, which will be attended by some 60 “researchers” from foreign countries including Britain and the United States as well as by Iranians.
