We Don’t Live in Lake Wobegone

Two weeks ago, a jolting report on American education hit the headlines, was discussed by the punditocracy, and forgotten.

It needs to be revisited for what it says of the success of our having plunged trillions of tax dollars into public education to validate an ideology of egalitarianism that has done almost as much damage to the U.S. as Lysenko­ism did to Russia in Stalin’s time.

Egalitarianism teaches that all child­ren can be taught to read and do math “proficiently”– the declared goal of No Child Left Behind by 2014.

To question this, says President Bush, is to indulge in “the soft bigotry of low expectations.”

Egalitarianism tells us that if we increase teachers’ salaries, reduce class size, and put poor kids in Head Start, every child can make it through high school and go
on to college.

But science is the history of beautiful theories destroyed in collisions with ugly facts.

What are the ugly facts about education?

A performance test given by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, “the nation’s report card,” to 21,000 high-school seniors from 900 public and private schools in 2005 found:

· Since 1990, the share of students lacking even basic reading skills had risen from 20 percent to 27 percent.

· Only 35 percent of high-school sen­iors—20 percent of Hispanics and 16 percent of blacks-had reached a proficient level in reading. In 1990, it was 40 percent.

· Only 29 percent of white students, 10 percent of Hispanics, and 6 percent of black students were proficient in math by senior year in high school.

This is only the half of it. Among the kids whose test scores were not fac­tored in were the 25 percent of white students and 50 percent of black and Hispanic kids who had already dropped out of school. Factor the dropouts back in and what the NAEP test suggests is grim.

Of all black kids starting out in first grade, per­haps one out of eight will graduate from high school able to read at the level of a high-school senior. One in 33 will be able to do 12th-grade math.

Among Hispanic kids, one in 10 will be able to read at a high-school senior level.

One in 20 will be able to do high-school math. Trillions of dollars – for this?

What is happening? Nothing unex­pected to Charles Murray, co-author of The Bell Curve, the controversial work on IQ and its correlation with progress in school and life. “We do not live in Lake Wobegon” where all the kids are above average, he writes.

“Our ability to improve the academic accomplish­ments of students in the lower half of the distribution of intelligence is severely limited. It is a matter of ceil­ings.”

Children with an IQ of 88 or below, 20 percent of American kids, will never be proficient in reading or math, says Murray. Period. If a boy with an IQ below 100, the U.S. average, is getting D’s in reading, it may not be “within his power to learn to follow an exposition written beyond a limited level of com­plexity, any more than it is within my power to follow a roof in the American Journal of Mathematics.”

Murray writes what few dare to say. Just as we are not all equally gifted artis­tically and athletically, we are not all equally gifted academically. Intelligence, which can be deter­mined by kindergarten and cannot be significantly improved, is a determinant of how well a child can do in school.

And the correlation between IQ and aca­demic performance is about absolute. We may bemoan it. There is nothing we can do about it. “[N]o matter how much money we are willing to spend,” writes Murray, “There is no reason to believe that raising intelligence significantly and permanently is a current policy option.”

In essence, Murray’s case runs thus:

Intelligence can be measured. It cannot be significantly raised.

It is unequally distributed. It is the critical factor in lim­iting how far a child can go in learning, comprehension, and math. It makes no more sense to break the bank trying to teach kids beyond their capacity than it does to try to get a slow-footed kid to run the 100 in ten seconds.

Ergo, we are wasting immense sums of money trying to get kids to perform academically beyond their capacity, money better spent steering them into vocational schools and rewarding careers that do not require academic proficiency.

As the top 10 percent in a society, those with IQ’s above 120, will be the pacesetters in business, politics, the arts and sciences, and professions, we should devote more resources to them and push them harder than we do, not only to excel but to reach a level where they “hit the wall,” as other kids do in junior high and high school. Put as much effort into making the varsity the best as into making sure everyone has an equal chance to com­pete. Anybody got a better idea?

      The trades & crafts today require a working knowledge of basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. It is also necessary to be able to read & write on at least a 12th grade level, and have an above average mechanical aptitude.

      The idea that genetics, IQ, and race (related to both) don’t matter is just silly on its face. Twin studies and IQ studies, as well as common sense should recognize this fact to some degree. It’s only the endless propaganda and politically correct pressure that make people believe or say otherwise. On the other hand no one is arguing culture, education, and training are of no benefit, but this article highlights that education and training must be tailored to the needs of the students, not a generic version for all. As it will frustrate highly intelligent people to not achieve to their potential and be too difficult for less intelligent people who are less capable and not interested. Certainly we all recognize this fact for severely unintelligent people who “ride the short bus”, they have special needs and require discipline to keep them in line. It’s really not that different from the average Negro. Knowing elementary teachers personally they have related this fact to me many times.

      The average Negro requires so much discipline that it takes up the time available to teach other children, whites and Asians in contrast. One teacher said she remembers back before diversity was pushed when her classes were all white, and the children were self-disciplined, marched in a straight line, and rarely created a problem. Now it’s like a zoo.

      I agree with two things from the government program, classes should be smaller and teachers should be paid more.

      I was tested in the 3rd grade and found to have an IQ of 122. I consider myself intelligent, but I had no fondness for accademics at all. I could read well beyond my grade while still in elementary school and was even offered my own science lab if I would do my homework more often by the school principal. However, I could just not bare to sit through classes and listen to teachers prattle on only to have to go home and waste precious time doing homework I had no interest in.

      I am more of a hands on learner and schools are hell bent on mostly teaching from text books and theory. I wanted to see and do not hear and read aoubt things. This is where I think education in the public schools failed me.

      I loved shop class, and I loved history but other classes bored me to death. Today, in my old High School they have Cisco accademies to learn about computer networking and they offer the chance to go to vocational classes at off campus classrooms where you can learn just about anything you want. This was not there for me and as a result I quickly lost interest in the plain old note taking, lecture-listening-to, 4 hours of homework school.

      I attended college for a semester at the local community hole and was disappointed in the major I chose. I then attended one of those advertised on TV trade schools (ITT Tech to be precise) and found it to be much better for my learning style. The only draw back was the revers of the addage “Those who can’t do teach.” The school had plenty of talented individuals instructing the calsses but unfortunately they were great at what they taught in the real world. Having some experience with this as a former snowboarding instructor I can understand how difficult it is for those who can actualy do things well to have to go back to the beginnings of what they know and teach it to others. Eventualy I left that school as well. Now I deliver pizzas for a living. 122 IQ and I fucking deliver pizzas!?!?!

      Oh well, I guess I’ve learned a lot through life experiences and hard work at a few different occupations to make up for what I lack in accademic credits. Its too bad you have to have some trumped up bullshit piece of paper for anyone to take notice of you now a days.

      I could sit and whine about wanting some company to take a risk on me and teach me what I need to know on the Job to maybe do what I would love to do (computer networking), but in todays world it just isnt going to happen so I will take what I have now, try to make the best of it and see where it goes from there.

      Schools and Colleges dont teach anything of much value now anyway.

      Teach them how to use Google and wikipedia to boost their reading, but keep them away from drugs and porn.

      This requires constant monitoring by parents, which might risk rebellion and possible substance abuse.

      Anyway, smart kids learn to do good in school. They still may get into trouble like the dumber ones, but the smart and evil ones get their dumber peers to be their fallguys.

      I am a social scientist (economist), with an academic degree and a keen interest and understanding of statistics, and having red The Bell Curve I found your statement to be a 1) unfounded 2) erroneus 3) unethical. I abhor humanistic profs engaging in cheap propaganda: they rarely have to show anything worthwhile as their scientific findings.

      This causes a larger problem which is a domino effect; if you don’t get the basics, then you fall behind, and lose traction while the higher level courses are being taught (if you get in to them), and from there you lose opportunities to go to schools and to get jobs with certain companies, or to move into specific fields.

      I will slightly agree with Social Scientist on Murray in that he and his partner left out certain facts in order to try and prop up Asians over whites – leaving out the fact that ALL whites are dumped together when IQ is averaged, and that E. Asians are separated from SE Asians when their averages are put together. Not to mention work by Vining and others that shows that the ‘bell curve’ for Asians is apparently narrower than that of whites, meaning more whites at each end. The pair put in a small misleading few paragraphs on jews, in order to make us believe that the jewish average is one full SD (standard deviation) above the white average when in fact the average IQ for Ashkenazi is about the same as that of Germans, Poles, etc. But they do work together, conspire, and maximize what they have. Murray still sucks jew ass today in order to make sure he can get published. The flip side is that both did admit that blacks and browns are generally dumb as a sack of rocks, and more dangerous.

      There are no more jobs in trades except residential and commercial construction, law enforcement, and a couple of others where outsourcing has not succeeded. The former good skilled trades like toolmaker, die sinker, patternmaker, electronic technician, diesel pump and turbocharger technician, and similar skilled trades are all gone. And the steezers are rampant in residential construction and in commercial construction where there are no unions.

      Maybe that’s because their parents are spending time blaming their inadequacies on other races and religious groups instead of helping their children to get an education. Furthermore, from the looks of the comments written here, the parents need to go back to school as well.
