Anthropologists Act to Revoke 1919 Censure of Franz Boas, a Key Figure in the Field

The American Anthropological Association moved on Thursday to right an 85-year-old wrong done to a pioneer in the field and a founder of the association. At its annual meeting, the group voted to rescind its censure of Franz Boas.

The controversy dates from December 1919 when, amid a bitter dispute about patriotism, espionage, and scientific ethics, the group's governing council censured Boas, then a professor at Columbia University and probably the country's best-known scholarly anthropologist. He had been among the association's founders, in 1903.

But in the aftermath of World War I, he angered many of his peers by making sharp-tongued criticisms of anthropologists who had covertly served as U.S. spies in Latin America.

Now the association would like to make posthumous amends. On Thursday afternoon, scholars attending its conference here provisionally voted to renounce the 1919 censure. In a nonbinding 59-to-0 vote, they approved a resolution that removes the censure and affirms that it is "immoral for scientists to use their professional identity as cover for governmental spying activities."

"This is an issue that has to be revived from generation to generation," Leni M. Silverstein, one of the resolution's authors, said in an interview on Wednesday. Ms. Silverstein, a visiting scholar at Northwestern University, pointed out that similar debates arose during the Vietnam War and are likely to arise again in relation to the conflicts in Iraq and Central Asia. (The association's 1970 meeting was riven by allegations that American anthropologists had secretly provided guidance to U.S. military operatives in Thailand.)

Thursday's vote was only advisory because the business meeting lacked a quorum. It is likely that the association's executive board will put the question to the entire membership in a mail ballot next year. The resolution is expected to win by a comfortable margin.

The immediate cause of Boas's censure was a letter that he published in the December 20, 1919, issue of The Nation. In his letter he announced that he had learned that "a number of men who follow science as their profession, men whom I refuse to designate any longer as scientists, have prostituted science by using it as a cover for their activities as spies."

Boas did not name names, but among the small circle of American anthropologists it was clear that he was referring to an espionage ring organized in 1917 by Sylvanus G. Morley, a leading Maya scholar who was then affiliated with Harvard University's Peabody Museum. The ring's primary task was to search for reputed German submarine bases in Mexico and Central America, but it also developed hundreds of pages of intelligence on Mexican political figures and German immigrants in the region.

On December 30, two weeks after Boas's letter appeared, the association's council -- meeting, as it happened, in the Peabody Museum -- voted, 20 to 10, to censure him. Among the complaints raised at the meeting was that Boas had endangered field researchers around the world by revealing that some of them worked as spies.

That particular allegation enraged Boas, who believed that it was spies like Morley and his colleagues, not their critics, who were actually casting a shadow on field researchers.

In an interview on Wednesday, David H. Price, an associate professor of anthropology at St. Martin's College, said two distinct but overlapping questions are at stake here. The first is whether anthropologists should ever use their scholarly credentials as cover for covert espionage. That question, Mr. Price believes, is clear- cut: It should never be done.

The second question, Mr. Price said, is whether anthropologists should ever offer their expertise, even openly and transparently, on behalf of a war effort. Mr. Price is writing a book on the roles played by American anthropologists during World War II, and he said that this question is much more complex.

Even on behalf of a war widely regarded as just, Mr. Price said, anthropologists should think very carefully about the ethical implications of working with government agencies. At least one anthropologist who had conducted fieldwork in Japan in the 1920s, for example, later offered his insights on Japanese society to U.S. military planners. The war against Japanese imperialism may have been justified, Mr. Price said, but that scholar's informants of the 1920s did not invite him into their homes with the expectation that he would be gathering information about how to kill them more efficiently 20 years later.

Mr. Price said that he was pleased by the resolution to renounce Boas's censure, but he also hopes that the association will take up the question of espionage in a more direct, less symbolic way. The group could strengthen its ethical regulations against espionage, he said.

"I've done fieldwork in Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East," Mr. Price said. "And people often ask me who I'm really working for. I would like to be able to tell them that not only am I not a spy, but that it would be against my organization's principles for me to be a spy."

Some historians have suggested that the censure of Boas was only nominally about his letter to The Nation. In a 1968 essay, George W. Stocking Jr. of the University of Chicago argued that the censure should be understood as the product of a decades-long dispute between physical anthropologists and Boas's subfield of cultural anthropology. In 1919 that quarrel was especially heated.

Baldly racist biological anthropologists -- including Madison Grant, author of The Passing of the Great Race (1916) -- then sat on the National Research Council's Committee on Anthropology, and they regarded themselves as bitter enemies of Boas and his relatively left- wing disciples. There may also have been a degree of anti-German prejudice at work. Boas was a German immigrant, and several of the 10 scholars who voted against his censure in 1919 were of German and/or Jewish ancestry. The 20 scholars who voted for the censure, by contrast, included some with close ties to Grant's "Galton Society," a eugenicist organization whose membership was restricted to "native Americans."

But the picture was actually more complicated, and morally ambiguous, than that, according to David L. Browman, a professor of anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. Mr. Browman, who is skeptical of the effort to "uncensure" Boas, suggests, in a letter to be published in a forthcoming issue of Anthropology News, that in 1919 Boas was skillfully jockeying to win research funds for his department at Columbia.

Boas actually knew of 10 anthropologists who had acted as World War I spies, not just the 4 he mentioned in his Nation letter, Mr. Browman alleges. Moreover, Mr. Browman says, Boas had known of the spying since 1917 but had chosen not to make a fuss until it served his political purposes.

Mr. Browman concludes by pointing out that Boas remained an important leader of the association for many years after 1919, and yet his peers did not choose to renounce the censure. "They understood the real issues involved," he writes. "Far be it for us, nearly a century later ... to rewrite history to suit our own current political biases."

Most members of the group, however, appear to be pleased with the effort to rehabilitate Boas.

"Many people in the association feel that the reasons Boas spoke out are reasons they might want to speak out about contemporary issues," said Regna Darnell, a professor of anthropology at the University of Western Ontario and the author of a book about Boas, in an interview on Tuesday. "Therefore we should go back and look at the political activism of our founders," she said. "There's a tradition of courage."

My discussion of objective-subjective refers to the slight matters of metaphysics and epistemology--as regarding the standard of truth and knowledge of reality. If "whoever" (kike-brains) really has or had anything to say, such "whoever" should rather have said it. To wit, kike brains, why not just say what is u think is so "profound" or "critical" about "subject"?--u pathetic little shit. Kikes are so clever, aren't they?

Objective-subjective has to do with the nature of reality--does it exist? If reality does exist, is it objective, meaning is it the same thing for everyone (every "subject," u idiot)? And such matter of metaphysics and epistemology go back to Aristotle and Plato. For those who think Wal*Mart is owned and operated by Whites, I got a little story for ya. One day, a few years back before I became an open racist, I was working for a regional civil engineering firm here in Wal*Mart's backyard. We were hired to design the site for one of their many new stores - they build about 300 per year, I'm told. Anyway, the project manager and myself went to the Wal*Mart HQ in Bentonville, Arkansas to meet with their staff engineer about the project. Well, I bet you couldn't guess the race of the brilliant fellow who held one of the most comfortable engineering positions in North America. That's right, he was a big, fat nigger. Really, a rather obese, gangster type. This position requires virtually no work, as the hired regional consultants do all the engineering, the nigger's job is simply to oversee the local firms and do who knows what.

While we were in the belly of the beast, I was able to take in a bit of the Wal*Mart culture which many folks here have described as bizarre, but the thing that struck me the most was how this "Professional Engineer" was openly oogling all the young, White, female office workers. We would be talking about some aspect of the project and he would be interrupt to let us know how he'd like to "tap that ho that jus walked by," or some such nigger speak. I didn't really get it at the time, but now I recognize that the jiggaboo must have really been having a great time rubbing it into Whitey's face. So, for the record, that is what Wal*Mart is all about. The people who run the place are as jewed as any other.

David Irving reports that several pictures of the Asian Tsunami are fakes. They are the pictures of a similar catastrophe that happened in China.

Sandra Bullock, Hollywood celebrity, gave $ 1 million to help the victims of the Tsunami.

Has the whole country gone crazy? Does anyone believe that the survivors will see a dime of that money? Even if they do? What are they going to do with it? Hang it around their neck?

Naturally, the Christian bashers chimed in by asking where was God?

President George W. Bush appointed his father and President Clinton to take the lead in the Tsunami rip-off scam. Who says that the disaster wasn't Mother Nature's way of population control? Especially in that part of the world. Even the rabbits are jealous of them.

However, we here in California did get a break from the Tsunami hysteria, when Congress member Robert Matsui died. For a whole day, the entire California media was mourning the loss of the Japanese-American. He was the son of parents who survived the American concentration camps. Matsui became the champion for all Japanese internment camp survivors and convinced Congress to pay reparation. Sure, he was a total liberal, however, he was my Congressman for more than 15 years. I've met the Congressman three times and it was then that I realized why Adolf Hitler favored the Japanese. Efficient, hard working, and absolutely disciplined. He always responded to neighborhood issues. Never, ever did he not answer my questions or wasn't willing to meet with me personally.

For those who think that this was a good thing - beware! Because Matsui's death has opened the continuum of Sacramento's "Oberjude" Darrell Steinberg's political career. The timing is just absolutely frightening. Steinberg was just termed out of the California Assembly. He was powerful, he is also a member of B'Nai Brith and his occasional visits to Israel are well known. Special election will be in March and Darrell Steinberg is the front-runner. As Assemblyman, Steinberg was representing the same district as Congressman Matsui. It is a sure win for the Democrats. Steinberg is responsible for the Holocaust Museum in Sacramento and will be a great danger to holocaust revisionism and free speech, if elected to the House.

Sorry for the digression - now back to the Tsunami hysteria. A little research with the Red Cross turns out to make European Americans the vast majority of contributors to the Tsunami rip-off. The black community gave hardly any money, and the Asian community was only represented by the Buddhists. Not a dollar was received from the Latino community. However, the Jewish community has their own organizations, which people can donate to.

By the time it is all over, the survivors of the Tsunami should all be very, very rich. Of course not! The money will go to rebuild. You can guess who is already in line to collect millions to rebuild. So you bet that your "Tsunami Dollars" will end up in the pockets of some Jewish contractor.

1. WAL-MART. The PC jews-media and newspapers afraid to lose their advertising refer to the behemoth euphemistically as "big box stores" in editorial comments from readers, as if nobody will notice. I've not been inside for more than two years now. Tearing out the "little guy" out of our White downtown is only a small part of it. Until WAL-MART buys at least half of its big warehouse goodies from our local creators, and from fellow Americans, I'll not give them another goddam dime! Fini! And I've lived without Sam Walton's racial sell-out economics just fine, thank you. If I have to, I'll be much happier making my own wood furniture (and other products) myself! There's nothing in Sam's China shop that I can't find elsewhere or make (or grow) myself!

2. OPRAH. Look at that "studio audience"! How often do you see White males in there? Why is it that White women have made this constant nigger-promoter tool-of-the-jews into a multi-millionairess? Could she have done it in Nigeria or Zaire, rather than spitting on our people? If you tune in or buy from the sponsers (rather than curse them, in writing, with the ridicule they deserve), then you are part of the decadent problem. The urgency for Poles to be informed about Sack's book was that some Germans in the USA were publicising about the camps and Morel as Polish. Indeed, there are photos showing Morel in a Polish military uniform. Besides, Morel murdered Poles as well in the JudeoCommunist camps after 1945. Morel was never in Auschwitz and the supposed number of his family members wiped out by the Germans is a regular Jewish claim. Morel was a "partisan" in the Lublin area, - I have a book with a published copy of a certificate signed by Mieczyslaw Moczar, - "Anthology on Armed Jewish Resistance 1939-1945" (1986) by Isaac Kowalski, page 249. Jewish "partisans" did not fight the Germans but were robbing, raping and murdering Poles. Morel's brother Icek was killed by Polish partisans in a battle. Poles in Poland have records of Morel's history, it is again an opportune time to publish it.

In reaction to John Sack's speech at a Revisionist Conference, I requested publicly that in his speeches he makes clear that Morel murdered Poles as well as Germans. He gave me a copy of his speech delivered at that Conference. I can share it with anyone interested. John Sack died a few years ago.

Essential maneuvers to forestall Armageddon

Of course, far too few people comprehend the depth of the decay, the advanced state of the disease. When you willingly and happily participate in a program meant to deceive and destroy you, it is doubly difficult to first realize and second admit you've been had.

Then, when you finally do realize and admit your future has been rendered substantially dimmer by a small group of utterly conscienceless rich white men whose demented, inbred families have ruled the whole world from behind the scenes for probably five hundred years and maybe much longer, and you turn to the authorities you trust for protection from this suddenly discovered psychological tsunami, you learn another hard lesson. They are not on your side.

The real purpose of the police is not to protect the public, it is to protect the bankers and politicians who quite literally own the public, especially when that astonished and outraged populace realizes it has been betrayed, and attempts to turn on its keepers. The cops and the judges and the senators and the mayors will not be on your side, because they derive their authority as well as their affluence from the perverse plunderers who seek to wring every last penny from the hapless human herd they control and manipulate.

That is also the purpose of foreign wars, to keep the public distracted from noticing the crimes that are taking place right before their eyes while they enthusiastically cheer their so-called enlightened system and continue to boast they live in the best country in the world.

So, those who are paying at least nominal attention to the malfunctions of the world and the inconsistencies of all these facetious public explanations that ever-so-small percentage of socially responsible humans knows what the problems ARE. The question I keep getting and the words on the lips of those aghast people who want to stop the mass murders and mass poisonings being inflicted in their names, is what can we do?

Here's what?

Capture control of the currency.

Without this step, freedom can never be real, because no truly humane system of governance can ever be implemented as long as the same greedy crooks retain control of the world's money. As long as ordinary people have no input into how that money is used, denominated, accumulated or distributed, the chances for peace in the world and happiness for its people are absolutely nil.

At present, more than 90 percent of the world's wealth, in a world of six billion people, is controlled by less than 10,000 individuals, mostly from two dozen families who can trace their bluebloody lineage back many hundreds of years. At the head of the line is the Rothschild family, which controls all the others. It has been estimated that the aggregate Rothschild wealth is at a minimum 5,000 times greater than the annual gross national product of the United States, although it's difficult to calculate, because the Rothschild octopus (and its loyal lieutenants of the Rockefeller family) literally own the U.S. money supply, the Federal Reserve, and all the major banks of the Western world.

Many communities around the country, such as Ithaca, N.Y., have already begun implementing their own alternative currency systems, but the vast majority of Americans are trapped in a financial system that will consume the assets of almost everyone should it ever collapse, or sag significantly, an event which many knowledgable observers think is imminent.

So when Bush the Younger drops a quick $78 billion on Iraq to be split up among his rich corporate friends, this is mere pocket change to the Rothschilds, about the size of a decent dinner tip relative to the immoral profit it will bring from the deaths of thousands of innocent victims.

The world's people and most especially Americans need to realize that to these people, you are nothing more than an expendable ant, to be crushed without thinking should you get in their way. With all of the inexplicably irresponsible spending done by the Bush administration, that day is rushing towards us headlong. Perhaps its only weeks away.

And following this train of thought you begin to realize that it doesn't really matter how you cast your vote for president. And I'm not talking about vote fixing, or the computerized rigging of the elections. These combined examples of criminal fraud in Florida and Ohio are actually irrelevant distractions, because in an American presidential election, it doesn't matter who wins because the same people always stay in power. It has been that way throughout the 20th century, since the international bankers seized control of the American money supply in 1913.

Of course, merely contemplating the capture of the world's money supply means considering the complete disintegration of the world's financial networks, which are inextricably intertwined with the cancerous Rothschild octopus, and rescuing control of the currency from these criminals would result in the instant collapse of almost every government on Earth.

Who would accomplish such a fantastic feat? Who would control the new system? Would the world revert into piratical barbarism? Probably. But that's what we have now, only with a smile for the cameras, which are owned by the pirates in control.

This process, should it make any headway, would take a century or more, and be accomplished gradually, as states around the world recalibrate their objectives from pure profit to sensible self-sufficiency and actualized independence.

Of course, with heartless predators like the United States manipulating all these little countries into bankruptcy at every opportunity, there would be difficult times. But they would not be as difficult as the situation now, where the New York and London banks immorally reap the lion's share of profits for the labor of most of the people on the planet.

The tradeoff has always been security or liberty. Ben Franklin still has the last word on this: Those who give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Sooner or later, we all have to bite the bullet and decide that we don't want to be slaves to the Rothschilds and Rockefellers, or it's curtains for freedom.

Which leads us to the second essential step toward promoting real freedom in the world ...

Identify the real power structure.

Some silly Americans thought they actually had a choice during the 2004 elections. Right, ace, with two guys from the same college fraternity as the choices. Which makes all this handwrung consternation about Ohio recounts as useless as the peace demos prior to America's invasion of Iraq.

Bulletin to all Americans (and whomever else may care to listen): we are well past the point where influencing public opinion is going to stop the people in control of practically the whole world from doing exactly what they want to do.

The main difference between the Vietnam-era protests and what happened in the late winter of 2003 was that the entire media spectrum in the United States had been locked down by the corporations, which was not the case in the 1960s. The anti-Vietnam protests succeeded in bringing the war back home because it got on TV. That is definitely not happening today.

Most Americans don't know that U.S. troops had orders to kill everyone in Fallujah, whether old and infirmed or young and harmless, or that we essentially destroyed the whole city (and for no particular reason).

Even though a lot of Americans are becoming suspicious that everytime Rumsfeld's boys need a justification for some new atrocity, they just trot out a new Osama bin Laden video, whose on-cue performances have helped many people reach the horrifying realization that the U.S. war on terror was created in Washington, and bin Laden, who was once known as Tim Osman, is definitely on the U.S. payroll.

But then, identifying who the real players are has always been difficult in media-drugged, flag-waving America, which is thumping the world to death with its unopened Bibles.

If you think George Bush or Dick Cheney is running the show, then you are woefully undereducated which is the mental status of most people in America.

Notable midwife to tyranny Henry Kissinger is the chief lieutenant of David Rockefeller, who is the American commisar of the Rothschild empire, which runs just about everything. There are no real enemies, only those created by the powers that be to create the chaotic conditions to both cull the population and profit from the sales of weapons to both sides. It has been that way throughout the 20th century, and doubtless long before.

Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany were funded by Jewish bankers in America and England. The Bush family was one of the primary benefactors of these maneuvers. They are trusted stooges of the big money players Queens Elizabeth and Juliana and Sofia and the banking giants of both Wall and Fleet streets. John Kerry's Jewish father was a CIA agent and he married a Forbes girl (the Forbes family, with Jewish ties, being one of the richest criminal American families of the 19th century, profiting from both slavery and drug sales to China).

Maybe, if you have the time, and any interest in your own freedom, you should to a little reading.

So you begin to see, when people ask me, What can I do? to oppose or combat this insanity that has wrapped itself around America's spinal cord like some demonic Stargate Goa-uld, it's difficult to toss back quick answers. Certainly supporting Dennis Kucinich didn't get us very far, did it?

We didn't get into this mess overnight, and it won't end for a long time, if ever. In the meantime, because of the lack of attention and cultivation of naivete and gullibility over time, we are deep into a tyrannical scenario where we do not have control over our own lives and have placed people in charge of our welfare who mean to kill off many millions of us, simply to make their own situation more comfortable.

This assessment can no longer be in doubt.

So what can we do?

How about you tell me?

Tell me true, noble citizen. What ARE you going to do when they come for you?

When the judges pronounce you a terrorist for participating in a peace demonstration and revoke your citizenship, what will you do? If you're a good boy, they may put you on probation for life and let you work in a McDonald's, or maybe Wal-Mart.

When the police decide to search your house because you contributed to a Muslim charity, and you decide to pull out your contraband AK-47 that you bought in a gun show in Texas, are you going to duke it out with them? Like Bill Cooper? Hell, they'll just fentanyl the whole neighborhood. What will your thought be with that last choking breath of yours? That you live in the best country in the world?

What will you do if they put you in a camp where nobody comes out? Petition your Congressperson? My Congressperson is Katherine Harris, as perfidious a felon as exists in any penal system. Don't count on me taking this route.

So what that you know you can't get an iota of truth from your TV or your local newspaper. So what that you know the vote was shamelessly stolen in Ohio, guaranteeing the ratcheting up of endless war. So what that you know we are being poisoned by chemtrails, insufficiently tested pharmaceuticals, and radioactivity spawned by America's own devil weapons.

The question on the table is ... what will you do when they come for you?

For me there is only one logical answer.

Shut down the government NOW, before we no longer have a chance to do it all.

But it won't happen. I received an e-mail from my friend Blaga in Bulgaria today, mired in her New World Order imposed poverty (she calls it USraeli occupation) and pining for happier days under predictable and relatively benevolent (in her estimation) Communist leadership.

She included snips of Milton Mayer's famous anti-Nazi polemic, They Thought They Were Free. Yes, Mayer was a Jew, but I'm thinking he had no inkling of the Nazi-like menace Jewish Israel and the Zionist U.S. would become today. At least, you can't hear it in his prosaic lament, chillingly appropriate for the situation in America today.

"This separation of government from people, this widening of the gap, took place so gradually and so insensibly, each step disguised (perhaps not even intentionally) as a temporary emergency measure or associated with true patriotic allegiance or with real social purposes. Nominations for the 2005 Schlomo Award

Asking to be a participant in the selection of this award has proven to be more than a mere response to a challenge. A broad view of the evidence suggests that we should be given greater flexibility due to the unique evil genetic aspects involved.

The perimeters of mankind's adversary not only includes the characteristics of his species, history of usury, speculation and war mongering. Of consideration must be his damage to regional populations and his general threat to the continued existence of mankind.

Finding a winner involves cross cultural recognition. It comprises perceptional language capabilities and the social consequences of being in the environment of the enemy of mankind.

One can fantasize about picking a winner. However, how does one determine the minimum requirements when considering that the nemesis has crippled entire nations, cultures, values and religions? Are the cold blooded killers of Pal women and children to be too insignificant for the award?

Let no man forget that he has been the steam engine that created the evils of both capitalism and communism. He has invented the junk bond king and taken our property. He brought us the French Revolution and gave millions a Workers' Paradise. He took Serbia's 1,200 Kosovo and taught us the value of occupation and free elections

It is impossible to calculate his regional accomplishments. For example, the poverty that has resulted from the Geremek and Kwasniewski regime in Poland. Then there's Putin. Although he tried to regulate the nemesis' transnational power, we can only adjudicate the theoretical aspects of the trillions of dollars taken from the Russian proletariat by the so called Russian oligarchy.

Then there are the written descriptions of Primakov the former KGB chief who now works for the CIA. And, what about the former KGB personnel that now runs the so called international Russian mafia? How about the peace makers in the Middle East or those responsible for extracting over a trillion dollars from the American citizens for the foreign entity referred to as America's best friend? What about Wolfowitz or Perele?

I am not the only one to be confused by this very important issue. I have taken the nomination sheet below and shown it to retired journalists, retired authors and retired university professors. I have shown it to former employees of think tanks and presented it to individuals in four of our local Polonian-American clubs.

No one could come up with a worthy candidate due to the extreme and unimaginable genetic evil that emanates from so many candidates worthy of this award. An official of our city's German-American club suggested that a documented sheet be composed with perimeters. This certificate, for voting, should be presented globally over the internet. It should be accessible in several major languages. It should be distributed over the web with a clearing house so that votes can be accrued after a 90 day period.

Lastly the clever mind responsible for this award should have the respect of all fair minded men and women. To allow this worthy initiative to fall by the way side would be more than a crime.

Better Answers: The Case for Judeo-Islamic Values, Part

With this first column of 2005, I inaugurate a periodic series of columns devoted to explaining and making the case for what are called Judeo-Christian values.

There is an epic battle taking place in the world over what value system humanity will embrace. There are essentially three competitors: European secularism, American Judeo-Christianity and Islam. I have described this battle in previous columns.

Now, it is time to make the case for Judeo-Christian, specifically biblical, values. I believe they are the finest set of values to guide the lives of both individuals and societies. Unfortunately, they are rarely rationally explained -- even among Jewish and Christian believers, let alone to nonbelievers and members of other faiths.

So this is the beginning of an admittedly ambitious project. Vast numbers of people are profoundly disoriented as to what is good and what is bad. Just to give one example: Take the moral confusion over the comparative worth of human and animal life.

The majority of American students I have asked since 1970 whether they would save their dog or a stranger have voted against the stranger.

A Tucson, Ariz., woman in late 2004 sent firefighters into her burning home telling them that her three babies were inside. The babies for whom the firemen risked their lives were the woman's three cats.

The best-known animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), funded by the best educated in our society, has launched an international campaign titled "Holocaust on your plate," which equates the barbecuing of millions of chickens with the cremating of millions of Jews in the Holocaust. To PETA and its supporters, there is no difference between chicken life and human life.

Only a very morally confused age could produce so many people who do not recognize the immeasurable distance between human and animal worth. We live in that age.

We do in large measure because values based on God and the Bible have been replaced by secular values. The result was predicted by the British thinker G.K. Chesterton at the turn of the 20th century: "When people stop believing in God, they don't believe in nothing -- they believe in anything."

It is a dirty thing to be a Jew and high praise to be a member of the NDSAP, so one should take great care not to falsely assign people to either category. FUNNY, BUT I DO LOOK JEWISH, at least to myself, and more and more so as the years go by. I'm fairly sure I didn't always look Jewish, not when I was a boy, or possibly even when a young man, though I have always carried around my undeniably Jewish name, which was certainly clue enough. But today, gazing at my face in the mirror, I say to myself, yes, no question about it, this is a very Jewish-looking gent.

The article "Types, Anthropological" in the old "Jewish Encyclopedia" (1901-1906), written at a time when the Jews were anthropologically still considered a race, notes that "persons who do not have the Jewish expression in their youth acquire it more and more as they grow from middle to old age." True enough in my case, apparently, though much material in the rest of the article now seems comically antique: such as that Jews commonly wear their hats on the back of their heads because of the need to put their phylacteries on their foreheads, or have posture of a kind known as the "ghetto bend" from studying Talmud so relentlessly.

The remainder of the "Jewish Encyclopedia" article, which is accompanied by illustrations ("Composite Portrait of Ten Jewish Lads, New York"), works around the notion that the precise nature of the Jewish expression "is very difficult to determine with any degree of certainty or accuracy." Admitting all exceptions--Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism, "was not distinctively Jewish [in appearance], all observers drawing attention to his resemblance to the Assyrian rather than to the Jewish type"--the article nonetheless insists there is a "Jewish expression."

AGAINST MUCH SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE to the contrary, I happen to believe there is one, too. Noses used to be considered the defining Jewish physical characteristic--"chosen noses," in the phrase I myself sometimes use. High arching, aquiline, hooked, long, nostril-flaring, sometimes bump-bearing noses have generally been taken for Jewish. My own nose is fairly regular, in shape and in size, though its straight bridge now seems a touch high and it has become a tad beaky and, in profile, begins to seem more prominent.

I somewhere read the phrase "Jewish ears," implying large and fleshy appendages, and, if such Jewish ears exist, these I indubitably have. My ears have always stuck out, but now they seem to be growing larger, in proportion to my head, and a bit pointy into the bargain. Gershom Scholem, the great scholar of Jewish mysticism, had such ears. So, more famously and pointily, did Franz Kafka, giving him the look of a bat, or other member of the order Chiroptera.

Where I think I may look most Jewish is in the eyes. Once dark brown, my eyes are now more mottled, even containing bits of blue. The skin over my right eye is beginning to sag slightly--my mother's right eye did something similar late in her life--and my eyebrows are growing grayer and bushier, more unruly. But it's the look in my eyes that strikes me as most Jewish: It seems to me worldly, not to say a trifle world-weary, melancholy, if not mildly depressed.

The human face, we now know, is not symmetrical, a fact that painting seems to capture better than sculpture. Of my two sides, the right is the more lined, weather-beaten, battered-looking. I think of this side of my face as even more Jewish than my left side, which, to be sure, I don't exactly think of as Swedish. Am I equating suffering here with looking Jewish? I hope not, because not only have I never knowingly suffered in America for being Jewish, but I also take genuine pleasure in thinking myself a Jew, or member of what I, perhaps chauvinistically, prefer to think the most lively minority group in the United States.

A man named Sam Profettas, a Greek Jew from Salonika, photographed in 1991 by Frdric Brenner for "Diaspora," his two-volume photographic study of Jews, has the face I may have a chance of attaining. Mr. Profettas has thin lips, deep-sunk, pouch-underlined eyes, a straight but prominent nose, and no fewer than seven deep furrows in his forehead, with white hair brushed straight back. If I can survive another fifteen or so years, I shouldn't at all mind having a face approximating his, thoughtful, ironic, melancholic.

If one of the contributors to the text volume of Brenner's "Diaspora" were asked to read a photograph of my face, he might well find in it a longing to return from my post-exilic existence in America. How perfectly, absolutely, delightfully wrong he would be! Proudly Jewish though I may be, pro-Israel though I shall always remain, I have never wished to live anywhere else than in America. I can recall one evening in Jerusalem, awaiting the performance of Shlomo Mintz and the Jerusalem Music Center Chamber Orchestra, thinking that everyone else in this room could, theoretically, be Jewish. Rather than feeling that I was home at last among my people, I thought how, given a choice, I preferred instead to be among a small minority in a larger, free country. Perverse? Idon't believe so; this position might even be considered a natural one for a writer who longs for objectivity, which is to say to be a little distanced from the life around him.

A French social anthropologist, Frdric Brenner has been photographing Jews in their diasporic condition over the past twenty-five years, in what began as a search, as it was described in a New York Times article about him, for "the quintessential Jew." He has photographed Jews in fifteen republics of the old Soviet Union, in Yemen, India, Israel, Iraq, Iran, Greece, Tunisia, New York, along the Amazon, in Brazil, Argentina, China, Hong Kong, Africa, Germany, Holland, and most other countries of Europe. Among other things, "Diaspora" demonstrates the demographic ubiquity, if not everywhere the density, of Jews worldwide and in countries where they are often deeply rooted and not in the least cosmopolitan.

BRENNER MIGHT BE CALLED the Jewish Diane Arbus, if Miss Arbus herself weren't Jewish (having been born a Nemerov, sister of the poet Howard). He has, that is to say, a taste for the stark and even the freakish; grotesquerie seems to light his fire. He provides photographs of a midget Jewish hatter in the Ukraine, rabbinic couples (men and women rabbis) on beds together at a bargain furniture store in New York, a Jewish drag queen stretched along the sandy ground in Johannesburg, South Africa. Some of his photographs are distinctly "in your face," or, to use the pro-football term, "smash mouth." An example of this aspect of his work is seen in a photograph of ten defiant-looking young female rabbis and cantors at the Jewish Theological Seminary, in prayer shawls with phylacteries, or tefilin, wrapped round their forearms. None of Brenner's photographs carry titles or captions, but this one might have been entitled "Not Your Mother's Judaism."

The photograph in this book for which I do not possess a proper introductory adjective--shocking? devastating? desolating?--is one of six Jewish women from Los Angeles with their blouses off who have had mastectomies (five single, one double). I am not sure how one is supposed to react to this photograph. Powerful it is; that is beyond question. But to what end? How was Brenner able to get the women to pose for it? They sit at a table, each holds the hands of the women on both sides of her. Some attempt a smile, but without much success. "Posing for this picture with these women was a very intense experience," one of them remarks, and then, alas, breaks off into psycho-babblish jabber about meditation and the sense of connection required to summon the bravery for allowing the photograph. One can perhaps see the possibly cathartic effect of having done so. Only the motives of the photographer are really in question here.

Is iconoclasm part of Brenner's project? One picks up bits of anti-Israeli feeling, for example, in some of his photographs. A set of photos, takenroughly a decade apart, shows a perhaps six-year-old, earlock-wearing Yemeni Jew, Lewi Faez, studying a Jewish book in his grandfather's jewelry workshop, a room that does not seem far advanced above a cave. Years later Brenner photographed the sixteen-year-old and now married Lewi Faez and his wife and infant child in a nearly empty modern apartment in Israel in a manner meant to suggest his loneliness in his new country--the implication here being that Yemen, with all its primitiveness, may have been better. The camera, it is said, does not lie, but the man behind it can have his devious subtexts and political agendas.

THE TEXT--contained in the slenderer of the two volumes of "Diaspora"--includes what Brenner calls "Voices," or commentaries on smaller versions of many of the full-page, sometimes two-page-wide photographs found in the photographic volume. The "voices" are in fact brief passages written by novelists, poets, historians, scholars, and critics stirred by particular photographs; sometimes these passages entail a reading or interpretation of the photograph, sometimes they occasion autobiographical sorties suggested to them by the photographs. The passages written by Andr Aciman (a Jew born in Alexandria, Egypt), Julius Lester (an African-American who many years ago converted to a Judaism he takes seriously), and Tsvi Blanchard (an American orthodox rabbi) are easily the most penetrating. Jacques Derrida, a Jew born in Algeria, is interesting only when he is autobiographical and is otherwise his old charmless, obscurantist self. The Harvard philosopher Stanley Cavell, another frequent "Voices" contributor, is reliably disappointing. Thousands of words are in this text volume that aren't worth a single one of Brenner's pictures.

As for that quintessential Jew, Brenner allows that he has never found him and suggests, as does the impressive variety of his photographs, that he may not exist. Who might he be? Surveying the immensity of Jewish types, might he be the philosopher Martin Buber, the gangster Meyer Lansky, the comedian Woody Allen, the sports announcer Howard Cosell, the operatic singer Beverly Sills?

Is the authentic Jew an earlock-wearing, tsitsit-on-the-undergarments-bearing Hasid in the Mea Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem, a merchant originally from Iraq living in Calcutta, a Marrano praying in an attic in Portugal, a golfer in plaid pants and peach-colored shirt teeing off at the Lakeshore Country Club in Glencoe? The answer is of course all and none of the above.

And yet Jews remain, at least to most other Jews, identifiably, unmistakably Jewish. "Gaydar" is a word, formed from "radar," that describes the ability to discern a gay man, especially one attempting to pass as heterosexual. If there is an equivalent power of discernment that allows one to spot Jews, even where they do not conform in any obvious or even subtle way to stereotypical notions of the Jew--let us call this "Jewdar"--I like to think I possess it in reasonably good working order.

I feel that I can see through the occasional name change, cosmetic surgery, or sad attempts to pass oneself off as something other than Jewish that come within my purview. "Ah, a landsman," lights up on the screen in my mind when I encounter a person I take to be Jewish. A name can sometimes be more suggestive of Jewishness than physical appearance. Names, too, can give to Jews an odd sense of worldwide connectedness. Brenner, in this collection, provides Cohens from Venezuela, Kushners from Birobidzhan, Aarons from Calcutta, Bermans from Paris, and Hershs and Freys from Antwerp.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I have always wondered what it might be like not to be Jewish but to have a Jewish-sounding name--Sarah Jacobson, Norman Davis, Mark Steyn--and often be taken for Jewish. First, there would be the worry that someone might hold your being Jewish (when you're not) against you; and, second, there is the discomfort entailed in getting special treatment from another Jew or philo-Semite because that he or she thinks you are someone you are not. I once saw a man who was a dead ringer for the old actor Cesar Romero wearing a bright red T-shirt with bold white lettering that read "I Am Not Cesar Romero." Perhaps people with Jewish-sounding names ought to wear T-shirts, or at least carry business cards, that read, "I'm Sidney Ross, But Not Really Jewish." Glenn Gould, whose name and face and manner all falsely suggest Jewishness, could have used such a T-shirt.

The first time he saw troops from the Israeli Army, so in shape and formidable did they seem, Jackie Mason claims that he thought they were actually Puerto Ricans. One of the points Brenner attempts to make in "Diaspora" is that it's no longer so easy to tell Jews from non-Jews. In the photographs that he took of Jews in Italy, for example, especially those of men, none looks especially Jewish: They seem purely Roman or Venetian or Florentine. Yet my Jewdar rings even when I gaze upon most of the Chinese Jews in his photographs from Beijing. Brenner seems to play off this point with a photograph of a group of black and Hispanic moving men seated by a truck in Palm Beach, Florida, on which is written the company's name: Nice Jewish Boys. Only one actual Jewish boy, Jerry Burnstein, the driver of the truck and perhaps one of the owners, is in the picture. "Gee," remarks Julius Lester of this photograph, "but they don't look Jewish." What--or on whom--is the joke here?

BRENNER SUPPLIES a variety of Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews, and his selection of photographs emphasizes more the distinction between them than between German and Eastern European Jews (both of whom are Ashkenazic). The rivalries and little snobberies among these three divisions of Jewry are themselves of humorous interest to those who consider themselves connoisseurs of Jewishness. Traditionally, the German Jews held themselves to be above--more assimilated, more cultured--Eastern European Jews, while the Sephardi Jews, who were exiled from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492, held themselves to be more aristocratic and hence above both. Some of them even claim the cachet of having been exiled in 1492 in the same way that some old-line American WASPs used to claim coming over on the Mayflower.

Eastern Jews referred to German Jews as yekkes, probably from the German word for "jacket" and a metonym for the notion that the stiffer, more formal German Jews never took off their suit jackets. What is the difference between a virgin and a yekke? an old joke asked. The answer was that a yekke remained a yekke. In a novel called "Caf Berlin" by Harold Nebenzal, I came across the amusing generalization that the real division between Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews is that no true Sephardi, at least one raised in the Middle East, can abide gefilte fish, an Ashkenazi dish. An often-disputatious people, the Jews, and never more so than among themselves.

Brenner frequently attempts to score subtle jokes with his photographs. His better ones usually come by way of the settings he arranges for many of his subjects. Consider his photograph of fourteen Jewish shrinks, in a tight grouping off to the left, shot in the library at the New York Psychoanalytic Society. Books and busts and photographs of Sigmund Freud are scattered throughout the room.

But dominating all--even the fourteen shrinks--is a large psychoanalytic couch at the picture's center, which, in the context of the photograph, resembles a mastless Egyptian boat. Might this couch stand for the boat that all these shrinks, still working away at their now quite dead ideas, seem to have missed? I don't know the state of Brenner's belief in psychoanalysis--though anyone who has read my previous sentence now knows the state of mine--and so I could be wrong about my interpretation of this photograph. But the brilliance of his arrangement makes it certainly possible, amusing, and, to me at least, persuasive.

Another of Brenner's photographs has sixteen actors all in Groucho Marx makeup and poses. Tsvi Blanchard remarks that "this photograph nearly convinced me that Groucho Marx was the official logo of Jews in exile." Underlying this is the notion of the Jew as someone who is skeptical, quick in response, verbally menacing. The Jew as witty radical is also suggested, for almost all the Marx Brothers' movies are attacks on what were once established American WASP institutions: Ivy League higher education, the opera, first-class ocean travel, thoroughbred racing.

The New York Jew may be a spin-off from the Groucho, wise-guy-son-of-recent-immigrants Jew. When you're in love the whole world's Jewish, was an old joke line. Closer to the truth is that when you're in New York, everyone seems Jewish, sometimes including Irish cops and Italian priests. By their combination of knowingness and aggressiveness--a combination that is not everybody's cup of caviar--is how New York Jews are generally characterized. Among the earliest anti-Semitism I encountered as a boy came from Chicago Jews returning, in the early 1950s, from Miami Beach, saying that the chief thing wrong with the place was that, as far as they were concerned, it had too many New York Jews. I have myself been taken for a New York Jew, and once read, in a biographical note accompanying an essay of mine reprinted in a college reader, that I had attended CCNY and then Columbia, when I've never set foot in either. Funny, I don't seem to myself New Yorkish.

BUT THERE IS ALSO the cerebral Jew (J. Robert Oppenheimer), the sensitive artistic Jew (Yehudi Menuhin, Vladimir Horowitz--this one comes in handsome and homely versions), the genius Jew (Albert Einstein), the infuriating Jewish woman (Barbra Streisand, she should only mind her own business), the Rebecca-by-the-wells beautiful Jewess (Marisa Berenson), and a full typology of other Jews, enough and more than enough, really, to go round.

Frdric Brenner's point is precisely that there may be no quintessential, authentic, absolute Jew. He makes this point, over and over, by showing Jews in unexpected connections. A photograph of the members of a Jewish motorcycle club in their leather and on their bikes before a synagogue is a notable example. Another is a Chaplinesque little Jewish man, with yarmulke and cane and cavalry mustache and bemused smile, standing against a blank wall in Calcutta. More in his smash-face mode, he provides a picture of a Passover ceremony at a maximum security women's correctional facility in Bedford Hills, New York; in case you missed the message, this photograph says, there are dangerous Jewish criminals and they aren't all Jewish men, either.

Brenner does not emphasize the Holocaust in this collection, though it was Hitler who sent more Jews off into a second diaspora than did the Romans when they destroyed the Second Temple. One extraordinary photograph, shot from above, shows a circle of twelve women, six Holocaust survivors, back to back, arms entwined with their lesbian daughters'.

What, one has to ask, is the moral of this picture: You survive the Holocaust, and you still get a lesbian for a daughter? Or might Brenner have intended that women who have gone through the Holocaust and lesbians, mother and daughters in this instance, share equal status as victims? I fear that our photographer intends the politically correct, drearier, and much more boring second interpretation.

MOST OF BRENNER'S PHOTOGRAPHS in Israel are not of the appealing Israeli young that characterize the place for many of us but of Hasidic Jews. Tsvi Blanchard remarks of a photograph of two, dark, bespectacled, spindly-legged Hasids: "How curious this is! We can only imagine the Jew as people we do not wish to be." Whether in the Catskill Mountains, Mea Shearim, on 47th Street in New York, at a study or dining table, or out in an open field, the Hasidim bring their complete world with them, which perhaps accounts, at least in part, for why they are as photogenic as any subject going.

Brenner provides a rigged up photograph of Jewish American celebrities, each appearing in a nineteenth-century gold gilt frame, out of which some place a hand or even their full head. The people in the photograph range from Henry Kissinger to the swimmer Mark Spitz, from Isaac Stern to Betty Friedan, from Philip Roth (the frame in which he appears is set horizontally on the ground) to Lauren Bacall. Different as they all are in the quality of their minds and outlook, all look distinctly Jewish. Saul Bellow, who also appears in this photograph, here resembles nothing so much as an ancient parrot, but, it must be added, a distinctly Jewish one.

"Over time," Tsvi Blanchard remarks, "Brenner's work will increasingly undermine our conscious belief that there is only one way to be Jewish." Perhaps so. Hasidic Judaism harks back to the eighteenth century. Much modern Judaism, in its liberal strain, makes a conscious attempt to be as inclusive as possible; a visit to many Reform Jewish synagogues today can sometimes make one feel as if one has just attended a platform session of the McGovern wing of the Democratic party. Above all there reigns the paradox that, as some branches of Judaism make more and more concessions to modernity--female rabbis being the most notable step in this direction--more and more young Jews seem to be returning to Jewish orthodoxy. Go, as the Jews say, figure.

AND YET . . . and yet . . . and yet . . . despite and perhaps because of all this, why is it that I continue to feel that I can recognize a Jewish face at twenty paces, no matter what its possessor's politics, nationality, personal history? "Numbers of Jews are found," the "Jewish Encyclopedia" notes, "who possess none of the characteristics here noted, and yet are recognizable as Jews."

Jews come in all shapes and sizes, tastes and temperaments. They can be garish and vulgar, pushy and wild, sensitive and cerebral, artistic and conservative, but they are rarely dull, except of course when trying to pass themselves off as something other than Jewish. Sometimes I think I can have had no better luck than to have been born Jewish, even though I am in my religious belief a pious agnostic and far from a sedulous practitioner of the Jewish religion. At other, rarer times, the complication of being Jewish seems heavy, or "fraught," as is nowadays said, and what it is fraught with, I believe, is the feeling of never quite feeling altogether at home anywhere.

"What are you doing here?" is a question that plays somewhere in the back of every Jewish person in whatever country he or she takes up residence. ("A Jew," Andr Aciman remarks "is always someone about whom one asked: Why on earth isn't he where he belongs?") The pressure of history makes it a tough question to block out. It was supposed to have been put to rest with the founding of the State of Israel, but, just now, a good part of the world seems to be asking the Israelis and their nation precisely this question: What are you doing here?

Aggressiveness can sometimes mask this feeling of outsiderishness on the part of Jews, sometimes irony can attempt to do the same thing. And on occasion, so can a measured distancing of oneself from full participation in the life around one. But anyone dedicated to being a person on whom little is lost will notice it playing somewhere in the expression of almost all Jews. Careful scrutiny will inevitably reveal that, funny, but they really do look Jewish.

Yes indeed, Michael Jones is working on a book about the long -- very long -- history of Jewish cultural and sexual subversion, opposition to Christianity, and fomenting of sexual revolution. What is of particular interest is just how far back Jewish cultural/sexual subversion really goes. Most of us are probably accustomed to thinking that serious Jewish intellectual and political subversion didn't really get going until the 19th Century, as MacDonald shows in The Culture of Critique. But if Jones is right, Jews have been fomenting sexual revolution for centuries and centuries before they began developing subversive intellectual systems, at least since the time of Simon Bar Kokhba, one of the figures that will get a good deal of coverage in Jones' forthcoming book.

Jones' articles on Jewish issues that are currently being serialized as cover-stories in Culture Wars will eventually become chapters in his book. It should be excellent: a sort of 'pre-history' of Jewish subversion to those of us accustomed to thinking that it all began with Marx and Freud.

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- The Mexican government is distributing a comic-book guide that warns would-be migrants about the perils of crossing illegally into the United States and offers tips to stay safe -- enraging some advocates of stricter immigration policies in the United States who argue the booklet encourages illegal migration.

About 1.5 million copies of the pocket-size book titled "Guide for the Mexican Immigrant" were published by Mexico's Foreign Relations Department and distributed as a free supplement in comic books popular with adults that are sold throughout the country. The booklets are also available online and at Mexican consulates in the United States.

The comic book's introduction shows an illustration of three men huddling by riverbank bushes accompanied by the statement, "This guide is intended to give you some practical advice that could be of use if you already have made the difficult decision to seek new job opportunities outside your country."

Each year, as would-be migrants start considering a trip north, the Mexican government launches radio or television campaigns to inform them about the risks they'll face along the U.S.-Mexican border.

This year, the Foreign Relations Department decided to add the guide as a way of "trying to provide the information directly" in the would-be migrants' home communities, said Geronimo Gutierrez, the department's deputy secretary for North American affairs. "Once they reach the border, it's very difficult for them to change their minds."

Thanks for your recent e-mail and forwardings.

I have heard from Tony Hancock that on 30th December 2004 the Police raided the home of Chris Brayshaw, the National Treasurer of the BNP (until some unspecified date in April 2004) regarding the non-presentation of independently audited accounts to the Electoral Commission.

I have seen no media publicity about this as yet. The Asian earthquake and resultant tsunami has completely taken over the media's attention and so the BNP incident may have been squeezed out.

I am informed that for several weeks past the BNP's 1 per minute "information" line has been assuring callers that the party's accounts, independently audited by Chartered Accountants, have been presented to the Electoral Commission as required by law. The Police raid on the BNP's Treasurer would seem to indicate that the reassurances from the party leadership to their members may not be accurate.

Chris Brayshaw, I understand, resigned from his post as BNP National Treasurer, in APRIL 2004. The accounts were due to be filed with the Electoral Commission in JULY 2004.

Brayshaw's resignation was not announced to the BNP membership until AFTER the Euro and local elections in JUNE 2004. That resignation, as we now know, has not affected his legal responsibility for presenting independently audited accounts to the Commission.

Griffin, via the BNP web site, is attempting to suggest that the late or non presentation of accounts is due to the fact that Barclays Bank, then HSBC Bank, dumped the BNP as customers. This cannot be right.

The accounts were due to be presented in JULY 2004. Barclays did not dump the BNP until mid JUNE 2004 - by which time the account should have been completed and in the hands of auditors.

Because of non-presentation and because the law requiring all parties standing in elections to present such accounts is new, the Electoral Commission granted the BNP one or two extended deadlines, the final one being 31st December. So much for the the BNP line that the raid is all part of "state oppression'!

Accounding to a Barrister well known in Nationalist circles, one of the reasons why the BNP could not find one firm of independent auditors throughout the entire United Kingdom to "sign off" the BNP accounts is because (as one example of many) the BNP had in excesss of 30 persons on full or part-time employment, but there did not seem to be evidence of any established or regularised PAYE, tax or National insurance arrangements for these people.

Scrutiny of such issues is not, as Griffin's "spin"-masters suggest, "state harrassment", but the same auditing and taxation supervision that is required of any local fish-and-chip shop!

Watch out for the next 'Electronic Loose Cannon' - which I hope Neil may post (at least in part) to balance to stuff he posts from Peter McCallum, who merely redirects 'spin' from the BNP web site direct from the BNP web site!

I think it good that Neil wishes to cover the BNP's activities, but I feel he should cover the saga from more than one direction, otherwise his readers will be misinformed and will come in for some unpleasant surprises concerning matters about which they should have had earlier notice.

For four years now I have been issuing bulletins stating that Griffin & Co are crooks in the area of financial management; liars and hypocrites in the area of "personal morality"; and willing to water-down the fundamental precepts of racial-nationalism in order to improve their standing in the eyes of the enemy media and Establishment.

For doing this I have been denounced as a "liar" and my information and commentary rejected as "sour grapes".

What will these people have to say now? More of the same, I expect, because there is only one thing worse than being WRONG in the eyes of many Nationalists - and that is being RIGHT! They only want to hear "good news", poor dears!

As I say: watch out for the next 'Electronic Loose Cannon'!

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's Nelson Mandela, one of Africa's most committed campaigners in the battle against AIDS, announced that his only surviving son had succumbed to the disease on Thursday. Makgatho Mandela, 54, died in a Johannesburg clinic where he had been receiving treatment for more than a month. His wife Zondi died in 2003 from pneumonia. "I announce that my son has died of AIDS," the 86-year-old Nobel Peace laureate told a news conference, urging a redoubled fight against the disease.

"Let us give publicity to HIV/AIDS and not hide it, because the only way to make it appear like a normal illness like TB, like cancer, is always to come out and to say somebody has died because of HIV/AIDS. And people will stop regarding it as something extraordinary," said a frail-looking Mandela, surrounded by his grandchildren and other family members.

Mandela's announcement of his personal AIDS tragedy challenged the widespread taboo which keeps many Africans from discussing an epidemic which now infects more than 25 million people across the continent.

In South Africa, which with some five million HIV/AIDS infections has the highest AIDS caseload in the world, the disease kills more than 600 people each day, activists say.

Despite the mounting death toll, few public figures in South Africa or other African countries have personally come forward to say that AIDS has affected them or their families. Deaths from the disease are usually attributed to a "long illness," pneumonia, or other secondary causes. Veteran opposition leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi of the Inkatha Freedom Party helped to break the silence last year when he announced that two of his children had died from AIDS-related causes.

Vanderbilt 'Confederate' Dorm Case Opens

A state appeals court heard arguments Wednesday over whether Vanderbilt University can remove the word "Confederate'" from a dormitory the United Daughters of the Confederacy helped build in the 1930s.

The Tennessee chapter of the group claims the university's effort to drop the first word from Confederate Memorial Hall violates decades-old contracts, but Vanderbilt claims the contracts are no longer valid.

The judges, who did not say when they will issue a ruling, had strong words for both sides.

"You're arguing social values and making the courts be the tough guy," Judge William Cain said when a Vanderbilt attorney argued the university is completely different than it was in 1934. "The court is faced here with a bilateral contract and not an academic freedom."

Presiding Judge William C. Koch Jr., however, highlighted weaknesses in the heritage group's case, including that parts of the deal were oral and that some of the contract documents entered as evidence were not signed. "You've put your flags up and marched into battle without ammunition," Koch said.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy, which has 1,300 members in Tennessee and 25,000 nationwide, gave one-third of the cost of the $150,000 building in 1935 as part of a series of contracts with Peabody College. Peabody merged with Vanderbilt in 1979.

In 2002, Vanderbilt Chancellor Gordon Gee cited school diversity efforts when he decided to rename the dorm Memorial Hall.

The word "Confederate'' has stirred debate at the private liberal-arts university since the residence hall was renovated in 1988. Critics call it offensive in the face of an increasingly diverse student body and faculty, but Confederate heritage groups say the name change is an attempt to rewrite history and reject Southern culture. Grieving Classmates Of Teen Killed In SF Create Web Site

Jan. 4 (BCN) Grieving friends of Frankie Mead, a Novato High School junior killed in San Francisco on New Year's Day, have created a Web site in his honor.

At http://www.frankiemead.tk, dozens of people have posted memories of the 16-year-old's high school, middle school and even preschool days.

"You'd make class more fun, with your jokes, side comments, and the famous fart machine," one entry reads.

"It was just two days ago we were at the gym shooting around," wrote a fellow basketball player. "It seemed like an everyday thing. But now I realize how lucky I am."

Frankie was stabbed to death during a fight outside a Denny's restaurant on Beach Street, according to San Francisco police.

Police said Frankie and at least four of his friends were assaulting a young man outside the restaurant around 5:55 a.m. Saturday. Amber Oberholtzer, a 21-year-old from Elk Grove, allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed two of the group that included her male companion's attackers: first a 15-year-old girl, then Frankie.

The girl is expected to survive her injuries, police Sgt. Neville Gittens reports. Frankie died at the hospital a few hours after the fight. Oberholtzer was arrested when she and her friends returned to the fight scene, Gittens said. The young man who was assaulted also was questioned, but he was later released and no further arrests are expected, according to Gittens. Oberholtzer will likely be arraigned on charges of homicide and attempted homicide today or Wednesday, police said.

Woman Held In Novato Teen's Stabbing Death Released

Sixteen-year-old Frankie Mead was stabbed to death after an argument outside a Denny's restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf.

(ABC7)Jan. 5 (BCN) A 21-year-old woman has been released from police custody after being held on suspicion of fatally stabbing a Novato teenager in San Francisco on Saturday.

Amber Oberholtzer of Elk Grove was being held on suspicion of killing Frankie Mead, 16, after an argument outside a Denny's restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf, police said.

Shortly before 6 a.m. on New Year's Day, two groups started arguing before Oberholtzer allegedly stabbed Mead and another girl, San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens said.

The second victim is expected to survive.

After the incident in the 400 block of Beach Street, police said Oberholtzer fled in a taxi but returned a short time later to the restaurant, where she was taken into custody.

She was released on Tuesday night, according to district attorney's spokeswoman Debbie Mesloh.

The San Francisco district attorney's office is waiting for a complete investigation into the incident before making a decision about charging any suspects, according to Mesloh.

It is believed that additional witnesses may have been present on the evening of the stabbing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the police tip line at (415) 575-4444.

A leading geologist repeatedly warned Indonesian officials that an earthquake and tsunami would soon strike their shores, it emerged this weekend. Kerry Sieh, professor of geology at California Institute of Technology, has been studying the region for nearly a decade. Last July he became so concerned at the likely massive loss of life that he printed and distributed 5,000 posters and brochures around some of the islands later hit by the earthquake.

He addressed church congregations and schools to tell people what to do in an earthquake. His main advice was for people to live away from shorelines. Sieh had been due to meet Indonesian officials last month to discuss a wider education programme but the meeting was cancelled at the last minute because the officials said they had no money. Two weeks ago he expressed his fear that a big earthquake and tsunami were overdue in the region at a conference in San Francisco.

Sieh said this weekend: "No one can predict exactly when an earthquake will happen but it was clear that this area was at relatively high risk and such an event would definitely happen one day. "We told them it would kill people, wreck infrastructure and destroy livelihoods. But our warnings were falling on deaf ears. "My team and I decided to bypass the national and local government and start warning people directly. I hope our efforts saved some lives."

Ten years ago Sieh installed monitors on islands off Sumatra. His research focused on the Mentawai Islands, a chain 100 miles south of the epicentre of the Boxing Day quake. Communication has not been re-established with the islands since the tsunami.

At his speech to the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, he pointed out that, historically, such events have occurred in clusters. Sieh believes this means another quake could be on the way: "There is some evidence that the stresses on the tectonic plates south of the epicentre may now have increased and raised the chances of another major earthquake."

THE cost of the Iraq war has forced Donald Rumsfeld to slash plans for a high-tech military of the future in order to focus on the more mundane and urgent task of providing his present-day US Army with tanks and body armour.

The rising cost of missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, combined with a record US budget deficit, has forced the US Defence Secretary to make nearly $60 billion (AUS31.8 billion) in cuts to advanced weapons programmes for the US Air Force and US Navy, and even to President Bush's cherished missile defence programme, while increasing US Army spending.

An internal defence budget proposal for 2006 recommends that the cuts take place over six years. The programmes most affected are for fighter aircraft and new warships, once seen by Mr Rumsfeld as the future of the American military. They include the next generation of nuclear submarines, a stealth navy destroyer and an advanced air force fighter jet. In contrast, increases for ground forces, which he had hoped would become less relevant for the 21st-century US military, are to soak up $25 billion more Pentagon spending than had been anticipated. Pentagon officials said that the shift had been forced on them by the military costs of Iraq and Afghanistan, which are running at $5 billion a month.

Guest Viewpoint: Wild accusations of anti-Semitism stoke fears, squelch debate

Eugene is a university town, so it's natural to ask: From what does "academic freedom" need to be protected? The threats always have been there, but never more pronounced than today, according to a Dec. 25 Associated Press article suggesting that higher education is facing a simultaneous effort by a loose coalition of attackers - conservative extremists, Christian fundamentalists and pro-Israel lobbyists.

Many of us safe in the shelter of Oregon mistakenly identify such attackers as cranks. They supposedly are all "out there somewhere," as in the case of a discredited New York Post columnist, Daniel Pipes. He wrongly accused University of Oregon instructor Doug Card of teaching anti-Semitism in his sociology classes.

I have awakened to the unhappy reality that Pipes clones are alive and flourishing in our midst.

The Dec. 2 Register-Guard reported a settlement of Card's lawsuit against Pipes. I wrote Card not to congratulate him, but to commiserate about a result that served Pipes' purposes. Pipes and his fellow defendant, Jonathan Schanzer, changed their original criticism of Card, now saying, "He does not condone extremism in the classroom."

Yet Pipes exploited the propaganda value of the situation by getting Card to publicly condemn anti-Semitism, as if the professor harbored secret views to the contrary. He also got him to condemn professors who use their classrooms to promote anti-Semitism, as if that were some common cancer on the campus.

What those public comments accomplished was to strengthen efforts to mislead the public about alleged anti-Semitism by college teachers. That fits with what I've observed of Pipes' efforts to create a culture of suspicion in society, stemming from instructions given nationwide for letters to the editor to be written labeling as anti-Semitic anyone who criticizes policies of Israel.

I've observed a related controversy on the UO campus as a member of the Pacifica Forum, created to discuss issues of peace and its absence. We have met on or near the campus for more than a decade. Participation is open to all.

A year ago, one of our guests went to our sponsor, the Wesley Foundation, accusing the forum of having anti-Semitic programs. The foundation asked us to find another location. Pacifica was given no opportunity to confront its accuser. The sponsor wished to risk no "complications," and Pacifica had to leave.

The forum returned to campus to meet on Fridays in the Erb Memorial Union, because the Survival Center generously gave nominal sponsorship to Pacifica. Within weeks, the accuser confronted the center's student board with the same groundless charges. The center reacted without exploring the validity of the complaint. When Pacifica was granted a brief meeting with the board, the students said their decision was based on a Pacifica exhibit pamphlet, which suggested that some Jews were guilty of self-victimization.

Did Pacifica endorse that claim? Or was it in the exhibit to illustrate demonization of Jews, which Pacifica opposes? The Survival Center will never know, because it did not ask. It was reacting to intimidation. The facts made no difference.

The Survival Center and the Wesley Foundation are well-meaning, and generous with sponsorship. There was no smallness on their part in evicting Pacifica Forum.

But there was fear - fear of further pressure from a tiny minority that alleges discrimination even in the absence of provocation. That minority wields power through fear.

The tactic is used with equal effectiveness by Christian fundamentalists whose growing control of the federal administration is a strange variety of churchly proselyting - converting a supposedly godless democracy into a theocracy.

The strategy is to reject dialogue - a means fine-tuned by the propaganda of Pipes and his fellows who seek to insulate Israel from criticism from any source.

Professor Card and the Pacifica Forum are among local victims of that panic-mongering. The true victim is freedom of expression made voiceless when attacked with the weapon of fear by those with self-serving motives.

Jared Diamond didn't used to be so boring: Jared Diamond has a new book out called Collapse about societies that have collapsed due to environmental disasters such as deforestation. It's a useful topic, but in the large scheme of things, a minor one, which is why Diamond spends so much time on famously trivial edge-of-the-world cultures like the Vikings in Greenland and the Polynesians on Easter Island. But Diamond is so good at getting publicity that the fact that ecology has little to do with the reason most societies collapse will likely be overlooked. The main reason you don't see many Carthaginians or Aztecs or members of other collapsed civilizations around these days is they got beat in war, as Edmund Creasy's famous 1851 book "Fifteen Decisive Battles of the World" makes clear.

Diamond wasn't always so pompously dull. Over a decade ago, Jared Diamond wrote a fascinating book called The Third Chimpanzee that collected his Discover columns and other articles. It didn't make too much of a splash, perhaps because it was politically incorrect in a lot of places, so then he wrote a much duller book entitled Guns, Germs, and Steel, which purported to once and for all Disprove Racism, and he has been a fixture as a speaker at the higher priced sort of conferences ever since.

Although, as far as I can tell, he only lectures, never debates. I've never heard of him ever allowing himself to be dragged into a debate. I met him after he gave a speech at Mike Milken's big annual confab. We were chatting nicely until I asked him a tough question about what he didn't mention in his Guns, Germs, and Steel -- Wouldn't different agricultural environments select for different hereditary traits in locals? -- I went on to mention how James Q. Wilson's The Marriage Problem has a couple of chapters on how tropical agriculture in West Africa affects family structures. And, thus, wouldn't the kind of man that would have the most surviving children be different in an agricultural environment where he doesn't need to work too much to support them than in an agricultural environment where he does?

Now, Diamond has spent a lot of time birdwatching in New Guinea, so he knows all about what tropical agriculture selects for. And he has no intention of touching that tar-baby with a ten-foot pole. So, he grabbed his stuff and literally dog-trotted at about 5 mph out of the auditorium!

Jared Diamond wasn't always such a tedious phony. GC over at GNXP.com has uncovered an early Jared Diamond article in prestigious Nature about a hilariously politically incorrect topic. Personally, I don't have any first-hand experience with the topic, so I couldn't give you my opinion on the validity of Diamond's findings on racial differences in testicle sizes, but Diamond seems pretty fascinated by the question.

I recently went to the regional library to check out a book titled "The Kings Depart." Imagine my small surprise when I found out this book no longer exists in the library system. But then this should really be no surprise a'tall in an age where the FBI can legally track the books your read. This is probably one of the best books I have ever read about pre-Nazi, Weimar Germany. The entire cast of Jewish, Communist International, characters like Rosa Luxembourg and Kurt Eisner are carefully identified and analyzed in this book. I find it interesting that author Richard Watt also wrote "Dare Call It Treason," but again, when you read this book that will come as no surprise.

This is an excellent book for those who want to understand just how the Jewcomintern worked its wiles on a moribund Germany. At the time Germany was convulsing from revolution and economic chaos due to the post war atrocities imposed by the allied "victors." The author makes the reasons abundantly clear why Hitler rose to power and describes the cultural climate that provided the necessary support. What few today understand about this era was just how close the Jewcomintern actually came to achieving another Soviet style revolution in Germany. Yet due to their proximity to the newly butchered Russia, the German people were well aware of just what another murderous Jewcom revolution meant to the German citizen. It was this understanding that resulted in the mighty backlash against the German Jewcomintern and allowed Hitler to make his gains. Without this direct knowledge of the Soviet Jewcomintern by the German public, the outcome of the Jewcom's revolution would have no doubt been far more successful in its political assault.

Therein lies a valuable lesson for those in America who desire change, there will be no revolution before its time. It was not simply the hard economic times that led to Hitler's rise, but the twin specters of starvation and a murderous Jewcomintern seizing power that awoke the people to the understanding that they had little left to lose by backing Hitler and undoubtedly had everything to lose should the Jewcom's revolution be successful. When you contrast the political and economic climate of Weimar Germany to modern America, and when you consider the political and economic lessons the Jewcoms have learned over the past 80 odd years, it becomes readily apparent that whatever happens to America, it will be far, far, different then what happened in Weimar Germany.

The sub-title of this book is 'The Tradegy of Germany: Versailles and the German Revolution'. It was first published in 1968 but has recently been re-published in paperback. The book covers the period from the armistice that ended World War I (November 11, 1918) to the signing of the Versailles treaty about seven months later (June 28, 1919). During this period Germany was swept by repeated revolutions from the left and counter-revolutions from the right. These ended finally in the establishment of the weak and unstable Weimar Republic but also (and ominously) in the founding of the Nazi party and the beginning of the career of Adolf Hitler. While Germany was in chaos, the leaders of the victorious nations (Lloyd George of Britain, Georges Clemenceau of France and Woodrow Wilson of the United States) lead the discussion in Paris of the terms of the treaty that was to be imposed on Germany. It is generally agreed today that the Versailles treaty was a dreadfully botched job and that in the end it made almost inevitable the emergence of a revengeful and vicious Germany and then World War II. How all of this came about is a fascinating and horrifying story which Richard Watt tells with enormous skill and verve. In 530 meticulously researched pages, he has written the single most exciting history book I have ever read. It is a page-turner, a book I could hardly bear to put down. I have only one critical comment to make. It seems to me that this period of Bolshevik revolutions in Germany and also elsewhere especially in Hungary lead to something else other a a nationalistic fury and a desire for revenge. It lead to a sharp increase in anti-semitism. The holocaust itself, which would have been unthinkable in pre-war central Europe, became not only thinkable but perhaps likely after 1919. This view, I should stress, is my own only. At any rate it is a subject that Watt has chosen perhaps wisely not to address.

This is a very fair, balanced, extremely readable history of the the last years of WW1, the various revolutions and mutinies in 1918 and 1919 (mainly in Germany, but also Hungary,etc.)and the grand finale of the Versailles Treaty. When reading this book, one cannot help but agree with the thoughts of Jan Christian Smuts, who very accurately predicted the great and horrible events of the next 25 years. Apparently, Pres. Wilson did not carry out his lofty ideals in the end, Lloyd George had serious second thoughts (persuaded in part by Smuts), and Clemenceau remained angry and adament. This is among the few books that I've read that tells about all sides of the story. The six weeks between the first Versailles meeting (on the 4th anniversary of the Lusitania attack), and the final signing are especially well done here. I never realized that the Allies were on the verge of attacking Germany if the Treaty was not signed ASAP. We also forget that the Allied naval blockade continued for about 6 months after the Armistice, resulting in the deaths of thousands of German children. It did not end until the final signing of the Versailles treaty.In short, a whale of a good book!

The failure of diplomacy and politics which was the Treaty of Versailles is often said to have led directly to the 2nd World War.This book is about the German socialist revolution after WWI but has a much larger significance. In order to better illuminate the reasons for the revolution, the author spends maybe half the book describing the whole end-of-war scene, what was happening with the Allies, and the whole Treaty of Versailles process. The emphasis is on the diplomatic and political task of making the peace, and boy, if you've ever looked down on the arts of diplomacy and politics, this story is a real eye-opener! For example, after the German monarchy collapsed, the leading legitimate political party was the Majority Socialists. They were the only ones left to take over and try to steer the country out of chaos. Their legitimacy lay in the fact that they had been handed the reins by the previous monarchical government, and so could rule according to German law. Unfortunately, one of the leaders ran out to a balcony, and yelled to the crowds, "Long live the German Republic!" which was a horrible mistake -- it implied that the old, monarchical laws no longer applied, and that the Majority Socialists had no legal standing anymore. Also fascinating is the role that American President Wilson's fussy, exacting, professorial temperament had in the failure, and the unfortunate fact that the German diplomat the Majority Socialists sent to represent them was a lousy public speaker. And did you know the French believed all along that there would soon be another war with Germany? This was why they insisted on extracting so much land and money from the Germans, a punitive move which only made the 2nd World War all the more inevitable. The book is full of such fascinating examples. I am not a history student and generally have to read books on history laboriously, one chapter at a time, forcing myself to pay attention. Although this is real, undiluted, non-romanticized history, it is so well written that, after finishing every chapter, I wanted to go onto the next. The author is an excellent writer, great at character description and at suspense, though not in the least showy or overly present as a narrative voice. I plan to read every book of his I can get my hands on.
