U.S.-based professor: Holocaust is a 'myth'
Agrees with Iranian president, expects America to 'collapse' like Soviet Union

A U.S.-based Saudi professor and former U.N. fellow says he agrees with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the Holocaust is a "myth" and says America eventually will collapse like the Soviet Union.
Abdullah Mohammad Sindi, who has taught at four American schools, told Iran's Mehr News Agency Dec. 26, "I agree wholeheartedly with President Ahmadinejad."
"There was no such a thing as the 'Holocaust,'" Sindi said, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute. "The so-called 'Holocaust' is nothing but Jewish-Zionist propaganda. There is no proof whatsoever that any living Jew was ever gassed or burned in Nazi Germany or in any of the territories that Nazi Germany occupied during World War II."
Sindi, who maintains a website, has taught at the University of California at Irvine, California State University at Pomona, Cerritos College and Fullerton College - all in the Los Angeles area. He also taught political science at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia.
Sindi lives in Placentia, Calif., with his American wife -- a middle school teacher -- and two children, according to his website.
In the Iranian interview, Sindi said Holocaust "propaganda was started by the Zionist Jews in order to acquire worldwide sympathy for the creation of Israel after World War II," a claim he details in his book "The Arabs and the West: The Contributions and the Inflictions."
Sindi said Ahmadinejad is "100 percent correct and 100 percent logical when he states that if the European countries keep insisting that Nazi Germany gassed and burned 6 million live Jews, then Germany or Austria should be the real location for this rogue state of Israel."
"In fact, this illegal and illegitimate state of Israel is the one that created a real holocaust against the Palestinian people, both Muslim and Christian," he said.
Sindi contended there is a major conspiracy in the West to squelch free discussion of the Holocaust.
"The Western governments and media are hypocritical liars," he said. "They keep talking constantly about their own Western victims or Israeli victims in any situation, real or imagined, including kidnapping. But these so-called freedom-loving Westerners do not care a bit about their own colonial and imperialist wars that cause the death of millions of innocent Muslims and others around the world."
Sindi asserted "Israel controls the West, and not the other way around."
"The Jews and the Zionists rule the world by proxy," he said. "That is exactly what former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamed said in October 2003 during the 10th Islamic Summit Conference in Malaysia."
In an essay on his website titled, "The Direct Instruments of Western Control over the Arabs: The Shining Example of the House of Saud," Sindi says that after 9-11, Saudi Arabia opened itself to "its American masters to use it as they please in their brutal war and occupation of Afghanistan, which was accused by the U.S. (without any solid proof) [of being] behind the September 11 disasters."
His essay calls on Arabs to fight the West and overthrow the Saudi regime.
"The enemies of the Arabs are three: Israel, the imperialist West (particularly the U.S. and the U.K.), and the Arab traitors," he said. "For the Arabs to even begin to be able to fight Israel and its Western Godfathers, they must first and foremost get rid of the traitors among them especially the feudal corrupt House of Saud."
Sindi says Saudi Arabia "has never been riper for a popular revolution than at present. If the Arabs fail to get rid of such traitors, their existence as a nation might be in deep jeopardy in the near future."
In an interview with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Sindi said the U.S. does not denounce Israel's weapons program because the U.S. is "
"The most powerful Jews in the world are in Washington and in the United States," he said. "And because America always acts as [though] it is an Israeli colony. Because of that, the United States of America [is] dominating the entire world, but in reality the Jews [are] dominating the world, as the prime minister of Malaysia said two years ago.
He predicted: "The American economy is [going to] collapse in the near future, if the U.S. continues to act like that. They are going to dig their own grave ... and [they will] eventually collapse [just] as the Soviet Union collapsed."
In another interview with the Iranian radio service he called American "democracy" a "joke, both inside the United States and ... overseas."
"First of all, you have to understand that George Bush himself was not elected in a democratic way," he said. "The United States is a country [that] doesn’t really have true democracy. I mean, if you compare the United States to the European democracies, you will find that the United States is still in the Stone Age or the primitive age of democracy, because you could ask Native Americans: 'Do you have democracy in the United States?' They would say no. You could ask Black Americans: 'Do you have democracy in the United States?' They would say no. You could ask all the minorities like Hispanic Americans or Japanese Americans."
"Democracy" in the U.S., he said, is "only for the Anglo Saxon race and the Jews and [for] all of the millionaires who control the government and control the money. That is democracy for the few, [for] two or three percent, while the rest of the public in the United States are like animals [who] just follow what the T.V and radio say. …"
In an interview for IRIB on the 2004 American elections, Sindia said the American people "are easily brainwashed, they do not understand anything about parties or international affairs, and they have very little understanding of what is going on the Arab and Muslim countries."
"The Jews run the media and the Jews brainwash the American people [about] the Arab-Israeli conflict, and they do not understand what is going on," he said. "It is true that Americans do not want their children ... to be [be drafted into] the army or to go over [to Iraq] to die. …"
Sindi said there are many unemployed people in the U.S. who can make money by joining the Army.
"But then they get stuck in wars because the U.S. is perpetually inventing one disaster after another to provide itself [with] the necessary justification to interfere oversees … because [its] economy was [collapsing]," he said. "If the U.S. does not get a war every five or six years [it collapses], and this [has been the case since] the 1930s. …"
In an interview for IRIB on the 26th Anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution, he lauded the late Ayatollah Khomeini for calling the United States the "Great Satan."
Iran's Islamic revolution, he said, "stands as a unique example in the last century."
"This is the first time in the history of the Muslim world and [of] the rest of the world that [a] revolution [was launched by a] religious group," he said.
The revolution, he affirmed, is free of control by "Western and Eastern powers."
"It is in the Quran, and Imam Khomeini was very clear in [emphasizing] that we are Islamic people ... and we are not going to follow the capitalist imperialist West [nor] the communist and socialist East," he said.
All Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Libya and Africa, he said, "now know that Khomeini was right [in] saying that Washington and the United States of America is the Great Satan."

Duo says Sharon's illness is deserved

WASHINGTON -- The television evangelist Pat Robertson and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may not agree on much, but both suggested Thursday that the severe illness of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was deserved.
Speaking on his Christian Broadcasting Network's "700 Club," which says it has 1 million viewers, Robertson said God was punishing Sharon for dividing the land of Israel. Sharon, who engineered Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip last year, suffered a massive stroke Wednesday.
"Sharon was personally a very likable person, and I am sad to see him in this condition, but I think we need to look at the Bible and the Book of Joel. The prophet Joel makes it very clear that God has enmity against those who 'divide my land,' " Robertson said.
Sharon "was dividing God's land, and I would say: Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course ... ," the 75-year-old Baptist minister said.
Robertson, who ran for president in 1988, has a history of controversial statements. In August, he called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, who has long been at odds with U.S. foreign policy. Robertson later apologized for his remarks, saying he "spoke in frustration."
In November, he addressed residents of a Pennsylvania town who ousted school board members who had advocated the teaching of "intelligent design" -- the belief that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power -- as an alternative to the theory of evolution.
"I'd like to say to the good citizens of Dover: If there is a disaster in your area, don't turn to God," he said. "You just rejected him from your city."
He later said he was simply trying to point out that "our spiritual actions have consequences."
Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, said Robertson's latest comments violated "simple human decency" and were "profoundly offensive."
Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said it is "outrageous and shocking, but not surprising, that Pat Robertson once again has suggested that God will punish Israel's leaders for any decision to give up land to the Palestinians. His remarks are un-Christian and a perversion of religion."

Ahmadinejad, elected in June, previously made headlines by calling the Holocaust a myth.
"Hopefully, the news that the criminal of Sabra and Chatilla has joined his ancestors is final," he was quoted by the Iranian press as saying Thursday. An Israeli commission found Sharon indirectly responsible for the massacre of Palestinians by Christian Phalangist soldiers during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

Iran says it will resume nuclear fuel research on Monday, despite international appeals to desist.
Officials say seals at nuclear research centres will be removed, ending a two year suspension.
The European Union has warned such a move could jeopardise a return to negotiations on Iran's sensitive nuclear ambitions.
Resuming the research would mean all of Iran's nuclear activities, apart from uranium enrichment, are active again.
Talks between Iran and the EU broke off last August after Iran resumed uranium conversion activity which it had suspended in 2004.
The US claims Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, but Iran says its nuclear programme is for peaceful civilian use only.
The latest move threatens to overshadow talks between Russia and Iran on proposals to transfer Iran's uranium enrichment activities to Russian soil.

That was the big Google announcement?
After much speculation about the possible release of something huge, like a Google PC, Google co-founder Larry Page' keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show Friday night was anticlimactic for some--both on the conference floor and in the blogosphere. Google, in conjunction with Page's speech, did announce a new service that will let people rent or buy downloadable videos online, including classic and contemporary CBS TV shows and NBA basketball games. But even given the video-on-demand service's potential to dramatically change the way we watch TV, the announcement was a bit underwhelmed by the fact that the site doesn't appear to be up and running yet.

Howard Stern is ready to talk dirty Monday on Sirius

When: Howard Stern's new show debuts at 6 a.m. Monday on Sirius Satellite Radio's Channel 100. It will end at whatever hour he feels like it. There are commercials, but Sirius says not as many as on his FM show.
What's on tap: Stern will either confirm or deny Monday that he and girlfriend Beth Ostrosky were married late last year. Plus, each of Stern's sidekicks will reveal a shocking confession.
Other shows: There are two channels of Stern content offered by Sirius; Channels 100 and 101. Some of the other shows planned:
# Howard 100 News: A news team reports on all things Howard.
# Superfan Round Table: Fans discuss Howard.
# The Crack Whore View: "Hittin' the pipe and the mic " Supposed to be a send-up of ABC's daytime talk show "The View," but featuring women of quite a different ilk than Barbara Walters and Star Jones.

How low can he go?
Or more precisely, how low will Howard Stern go, when his edgy, stripper-filled, entertaining, but often tasteless morning show moves to the Sirius Satellite Radio airwaves this Monday.
After all, it's almost totally up to Stern what he says or does on his new show. It's even up to the self-professed "king of all media" what time he ends his show every day, if at all.
Stern has been beating the drum for 18 months about his departure from the strictures of FCC-regulated FM radio for the thus far (until and unless Congress steps in) unregulated world of satellite radio.
Set those alarm clocks for 6 a.m. if you want to catch Stern and his "Wack Pack" of mentally, emotionally, physically and taste-challenged sidekicks, as well as his favorite strippers and lesbians.
Of course, you can only tune in to Stern on Sirius Channel 100 if you've bought a Sirius radio and are paying the $150-a-year fee to subscribe.
The move isn't without risk to Stern. He's giving up a tantalizing base of 12 million listeners in return for a portion of Sirius's 3.3 million subscribers. How many of those 3.3 million will be tuning in to Howard? If a third tune in, that's 1.1 million -- a fraction of his former reach.
"I think he is taking an incredible risk here," says Greater Media Detroit general manager Tom Bender. "But he really didn't feel he could do his act anymore (on FM radio)."
Stern's move to subscriber-based satellite radio has jacked up the heat of competition between Sirius and its larger competitor (with 6 million subscribers), XM Satellite Radio.
To offset some of the Stern hoopla, in December XM announced that Bob Dylan would be hosting a show in March, and a few days ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the satellite service unveiled an "iPod-killer," a sleek new radio half the size of an iPod that plays both XM radio and MP3 files.
Stern, 51, for whom the term "shock jock" seems to have been coined, had been battling his bosses and the FCC for years over the fines he felt were quashing his R- and X-rated creativity.
Over the years, Stern's bosses had been assessed some $2.5 million in fines by the FCC. After some months berating the FCC and, eventually, President Bush, Stern finally announced in the fall of 2004 that he was taking his act to satellite radio, where he'd be free of what he saw as overbearing censorship.
Will listeners follow?
Stern's move has certainly set off a chain reaction of events in both terrestrial and satellite radio. Not only are XM and Sirius waging a pitched battle for subscribers, but terrestrial, free radio programmers have banded together to fight back by rolling out HD (high-definition) radio and dozens of new HD channels in each city.
The National Association of Broadcasters also is running anti-satellite radio ads on free radio, using personalities such as Alicia Keys, and some chains, including Greater Media, will not accept ads for satellite radio.
It's hard to predict how successful Stern will be in this new venture.
"Everyone's trying to estimate what will happen, but it's so speculative as to be ridiculous," says FM radio consultant Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media in Southfield. "Trying to predict behavior, especially purchasing behavior, is kind of dangerous.
"The way I view it, by the most optimistic estimates, 20 to 25 percent of Howard's listening audience is going to either consider purchasing, or will purchase Sirius. What we're saying to our clients -- especially clients like (WRIF-FM's) Drew and Mike -- is that they are perfectly positioned to be able to gain listenership. If you flip the numbers around, 75 to 80 percent of Howard's audience will be looking for a terrestrial morning show that doesn't cost money."

AMERICANS are used to lobbyists and big business oiling the wheels of their democracy, but not to "in-your-face" corruption. Last week, it was there for all to see when Washington super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud and tax evasion, and promised to reveal details of alleged bribes to top politicians as part of a deal with prosecutors.
While the US Congress is convulsed by its biggest scandal in generations, up to 20 members -- including Tom DeLay, who resigned yesterday as the Republican leader in the House of Representatives -- could be implicated.
"It's colossal," said Alex Knott, of the Centre for Public Integrity in Washington. "If Abramoff discloses all of his quid pro quos, Americans will learn exactly how money has shaped their politics."
The fallout could be devastating for Republicans, even though some Democrats also helped themselves to Abramoff's money.
Abramoff, 47, a former Reaganite who worked his way up through the corridors of power, befriending cabinet ministers, congressmen and party powerbrokers, was a Republican through and through. Suddenly, and painfully obviously, he was also a crook.
He arrived at court wearing a trench coat and a homburg hat, looking for all the world like a pantomime villain.
Some people remembered that when they shook his hand they felt dirty, but for years Abramoff was the man with the "moolah" -- one of his favourite words -- in a town always hungry for funds. DeLay called him "one of my closest and dearest friends".
The lobbyist loved to quote the icy Michael Corleone in The Godfather, facing down a politician who asked for a cut of his gambling profits: "Senator, you can have my answer now if you like. My offer is this. Nothing."

US Military Helicopter Crashes in Iraq

A U.S. military helicopter believed to be carrying 12 Americans has crashed in northern Iraq, killing everyone on board.
The U.S. military says the Blackhawk helicopter crashed east of Tal Afar in a sparsely populated area. It says the crash is under investigation. Military personnel found the crash site Sunday - about 12 hours after losing communication with the helicopter.
In separate incidents, the U.S. military says five Marines were killed in insurgent attacks Sunday and Saturday.

"Hey," said Homeless Jack as I walked into the greasy spoon where he was nursing a cheap cup of coffee. "I read that Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is going to put together an international conference on the Holocaust. I also read that a bunch of my fellow intellectuals in France are upset about having their intellectual freedom curtailed when they want to talk about the Holocaust.
"Maybe people are finally starting to wake up to the anti-intellectual craziness that exists in the modern world and are demanding real freedom again.
"You know, man," Jack continued, "I figure that the human brain is to humans what wings are to birds. I mean, our brain is what really makes us different from other critters. And, if we aren't allowed to use our brain to its maximum, we are like birds that have their wings clipped. Something essential about us is gone. We become less human. We become objects.
"And, that's what's been happening in the world for about the last several decades. We humans have been told that we can't question the Holocaust in any way. And, if just one subject, such as the Holocaust, is off limits to intellectuals, then there is no real intellectual freedom at all. Look at the tyranny that is going on in Europe right now. Our fellow humans and intellectuals are routinely persecuted and thrown in jail for saying the most innocuous things about the Holocaust. If a guy says that fewer than six million Jews were killed, he's thrown in jail. If he says that he doesn't think the ovens were large enough, he's thrown in jail. If he even hints that the Holocaust should be honestly studied, he's thrown in jail.
"Look at what's being done to Ernst Zundel and David Irving, to name just two current examples. Can you believe that in 2006 these guys have been thrown in jail for simply questioning something that is supposed to be an historic event? This is Dark Age stuff, man. It's like throwing people in jail for saying the earth isn't flat. It's absolutely outrageous.
"All intellectuals who live in supposed free societies should be questioning everything. Nothing should be closed to our intellectual questioning. Anyone who considers himself or herself an intellectual who isn't outraged about what has happened to Zundel and Irving, isn't an intellectual at all."
"Do you consider yourself an intellectual?" I asked.
"You bet," said Jack without blinking. "I expected you to ask something like that, so I'm ready for you. According to wikipedia, an intellectual is a person who uses his or her intellect to study, reflect, or speculate on a variety of different ideas. That's what I do, man. Thus, I am, by definition, an intellectual. And, I'm happy to stand shoulder to shoulder with my fellow true intellectuals who are fighting against intellectual oppression.
"I know you're probably thinking that maybe the Holocaust is some sort of special case and that it's okay to throw intellectuals in jail for questioning it. If you are thinking that, you're very wrong. If you even think that for a second, then you need to be deprogrammed.
"If you can't grasp the concept of an innate and natural human right to use our brains as we see fit and to communicate our thoughts as we wish, with no outside sovereign or authority to give us this right, then maybe hearing what the United Nations has to say about this will help a little with the deprogramming. According to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations, General Assembly on December 10, 1948 'Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.'
"Do you see any exception in Article 19, concerning the Holocaust? Does it say 'Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression, except about the Holocaust?' Of course it doesn't say that. That would be absurd. So, why do so many people let themselves be intimidated by bigots and oppressors about this subject?
"It's a basic human right to use our brains and to communicate what we think even if others don't like it, man. We're not anyone's slaves. We don't need anyone's permission to use our brains or communicate. We are free people with free minds. We have every bit as much right to think what we want and to speak out about what we think as anyone else on the planet. Anyone who tries to curtail our freedom is dead wrong and should be thrown in jail, themselves. There can be no justification for clipping our intellectual wings. None. Zero. Zip. Nada.
"And, here's the thing about this, man. Freedom is not something that we must go and beg for. It is ours by dint of our birth. Because we are alive, we are free. You know what they should do over in Germany and France and other places where they are throwing intellectuals in jail for intellectualizing? They should release those intellectuals and throw the bigoted and evil politicians in jail for trampling on the natural rights of man.
"I've been thinking about this stuff, man. Recently, I've been reading about the tyrants who are bombarding people with their goofy propaganda about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, and saying that he's crazy. Now, the guy may be crazy, man. I don't know him. However, the evidence I've seen of his alleged craziness sounds like more blather that we've heard many times before. The real reason Ahmadinejad is being called crazy seems to be that he has the tyrants all upset because he called the Holocaust a myth, and they can't throw him in jail.
"And, if saying the Holocaust is a myth isn't proof enough that the guy is crazy, the tyrants pile on by telling us that Ahmadinejad drives an old car, lives in a modest home, and has little money (read, he can't be bribed, because he doesn't care about wealth).
"I mean, how crazy can one man be? Doesn't he know that he's supposed to want to acquire all sorts of material things? What ever happened to that nice Shah of Iran fellow who took our money and did our bidding and who lived in palaces? Now, there was a really sane guy. There was a guy who had American values.
"The treatment being given Ahmadinejad sounds a little like that which was given to Ayatollah Khomeini when he helped overthrow the money grubbing Shah. As you may remember, Khomeini couldn't be bribed either. He also didn't care about material things. Crazy, crazy, crazy!
"The real problem for the tyrants is that it's difficult to bribe people who don't value material wealth. And, bribes are the way the tyrants and corrupt politicians in the U.S.often work. You want a government contract? Hey, pass the bag full of green under the table. You want a nation attacked? Pass the money.
"Once the bribe is given, we will often see some pompous and phony politician going before the American people with tales about babies being thrown out of cribs by this or that evil madman or about lampshades being made out of human skin by this other madman and about people being turned into bars of soap by yet another madman. And, the gullible American people lap it all up.
"Now the tyrants are peeing in their expensive designer suits, like I told you before, man, because Ahmadinejad is apparently going to host a conference to discuss the Holocaust. How dare he do this? What a lunatic.
"The fact is that any intellectual in the world who doesn't speak out against the bigots and the haters who are stopping free speech and who are persecuting and arresting historians and intellectuals simply because these people have doubts about the Holocaust and want to study it, are not real intellectuals at all. They're ignorant fools. So, please, don't pretend to be an intellectual if you don't demand that people such as David Irving and Ernst Zundel be immediately released and compensated by those haters who have been persecuting them.
"What crime did these guys commit? They used their human brains to do what human brains are made to do. Brains are made to think and wings are made to fly. They questioned things. And, they should keep questioning and they should never let up. Since when is questioning an alleged historic event a crime? Only bigots, tyrants, and oppressors would try to jail the human mind that way, man."

Iron Age 'bog bodies' unveiled
Bog bodies have been found throughout north-west Europe
Archaeologists have unveiled two Iron Age "bog bodies" which were found in the Republic of Ireland.
The bodies, which are both male and have been dated to more than 2,000 years ago, probably belong to the victims of a ritual sacrifice.
In common with other bog bodies, they show signs of having been tortured before their deaths.
Details of the finds are outlined in a BBC Timewatch documentary to be screened on 20 January.
The first body dropped off a peat cutting machine in February 2003 in Clonycavan, near Dublin. The forearms, hands and lower abdomen are missing, believed to have been hacked off by the machine.

A Harding Township man who is HIV positive was sentenced to 48 years in prison today in for repeatedly raping a 5-year-old girl in his home.
Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Charles Doneghy imposed the maximum and consecutive sentences on Antonio Gonzalez, Jr., 48, who was convicted in November of four counts of rape and one count of felonious assault.
The victim, now 6 years old, was assaulted on June 13 at the defendant's home at 435 Degenfelder Rd. in western Lucas County, where the defendant and his wife were hosting a graduation party.
Gonzalez, who had been drinking and smoking crack-cocaine, took the victim into a bedroom, barricaded the door, and sexually assaulted her.
The defendant's wife found her husband in the room with the victim. He fled through a window and was later attacked by some of the party-goers who had been alerted by the wife.

Police believe the group of up to six men was responsible for two similar armed robberies at Flemington, in Melbourne's north, late last night. The group threatened a woman with a knife and made demands for her handbag at the corner of Mt Alexander Road and Mooltan Street about 10pm (AEDT). The robbers fled empty handed when the woman screamed but later set on a 34-year-old man at the Flemington Bridge Railway Station ramp about 10.25pm. They escaped with the man's mobile telephone. Last night a group of four men of similar appearance attempted to rob two people in Flemington, including a man who was admitted to hospital after being bashed. One of the men was described as wearing a light coloured chequered shirt and brown baggy pants.

Man convicted of killing Utah tourist sentenced to life in prison

The man convicted of killing a tourist from Utah in 2003 learned his fate this morning. The judge sentenced Shod Walker to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 20 years. This morning the emotional parents of his victim, Simone Hirst, took the stand. Her mom held up her daughter's remains showing the jury all that she had left of her child. Hirst's father told Walker he's an angry old man trying to deal with his daughter being brutally taken away from him. "You're a coward; you're not a man at all. You've devastated my family and you've hurt your family the same way," he said. Walker killed Hirst, who was a model, in April 2003. Police say Hirst took a cab from the Bellagio to downtown to sell her body for sex in exchange for drugs. It was at this time that she met Walker.
Gang terrorizes train in France

PARIS -- A gang of more than 20 youths -- thought to be North African immigrants -- terrorized hundreds of train passengers in a rampage of violence, robbery and sexual assault on New Year's Day, French officials said yesterday.
The five-hour-long criminal frenzy was "totally unacceptable," French President Jacques Chirac told reporters. "Those guilty will be found and punished, as they deserve."
The gang of between 20 and 30 youths boarded the train, heading from Nice on the French Riviera to Lyon, in eastern France, early on Jan. 1, as it carried 600 passengers home from New Year's Eve partying overnight.
Once inside, they went wild, forcing passengers to hand over mobile phones and wallets, and slashing seats and breaking windows.
A 20-year-old woman cornered by several of the marauders was sexually molested.
"It was a real scene of pillage on the train," said the regional state prosecutor, Dominique Luigi, adding that the passengers were in a state of "panic."
Train staff alerted police, and the train pulled into a station to wait. The three officers who initially turned up later were joined by reinforcements.
A waitress in a bar near the station said two young women from the train had come inside in tears.
"They told me there had been groping. They talked about sexual assaults. They were really traumatized," she said.
The train resumed its journey with the heavy police presence on board but, just before Marseille, the youths pulled the emergency stop and many escaped.
Only three -- two 19-year-old Moroccans and a minor, all living in France -- were arrested. Both men were being held for robbery and one also was facing charges of sexual assault. The minor was to be judged separately.
Three others -- a man and two boys -- were arrested briefly in Marseille but were released despite reports they were carrying a knife, a screwdriver and a small amount of hashish.
Australian woman dies in shark attack
A 21-year-old Australian woman has been killed by a pack of sharks near Brisbane, police said on Saturday.
The victim was attacked in front of her friends at a popular beach on North Stradbroke Island in Queensland state.
She was flown by helicopter to hospital, but died a short time later.
Ambulance workers say she lost both arms below the elbow and had deep wounds to her leg.
It's thought she was attacked by up to three sharks while swimming about 15 metres offshore in shallow water.
A medical team on board a rescue helicopter reached the victim within minutes of the attack.
The young woman from Brisbane had lost a huge amount of blood and was barely alive when her friends carried her from the water.
Several beaches in the area have been closed as patrol boats hunt for the predators, thought to be bull sharks, which can be extremely aggressive and are commonly seen off the coast of eastern Australia.
There have been 10 fatal shark attacks in Australian waters in the past five years.
Robbers kill Italian tourist
Malindi - Robbers armed with assault rifles killed an Italian woman Friday outside her rented villa on the Kenyan coast, police said. Ann Piero Miguano, 30, was shot in the hip late on Thursday while waiting for the security guard to open the gate to the home, said Macharia Ruku, the regional police chief. The robbers stole $40 and a cellphone before escaping at about 00:45, he said. Miguano was returning home along with three other Italian tourists from a restaurant. The others were not hurt, Ruku said. No suspects have been arrested, he added.
Slain Police Chief's Family Upset By Removal Of Picture
SHARPSBURG, N.C. -- More than eight years ago, a man named Abner Nicholson gunned down the police chief of Sharpsburg. Since then, a picture of Nicholson hung in the police department -- until now. The sister of the slain lawman says taking down Nicholson's picture is an insult to her brother's memory.
"They've not forgotten my brother, which makes me feel good," said Wayne Hathaway's sister, Monica Worsham. "But I don't want them to forget who took him from us"
Worsham is livid that town officials removed the picture of the man who killed her brother in 1997. The snapshot of Nicholson had been posted on the bulletin board in the police station lobby with the captions "don't ever forget this face" and "dead man walking." Sharpsburg's new mayor, Sheila Williams, objected to the picture and the caption.
"This was told to me when she first took office -- that picture is coming down," said Worsham.
Williams was in her office and refused to comment. Other town commissioners say they consider the picture removal a closed matter and didn't want to talk about it.
"Yeah, it should have come down," said Sharpsburg resident Cynthia Cherry. "It should have never been put up."
Cherry backed City Hall on this one.
"Why have a picture?" she asked. "Why would anyone want to be reminded of a man they call a murderer?"
"I kind of liked it up there, because it was like...we're not going to forget who took away the chief," said Worsham. "That's the way I see it."
Nicholson was convicted in 1998 and sentenced to die for the murders of his wife and Hathaway. He is a resident of death row in Central Prison.

AWARD winning British rapper Ms Dynamite has been charged with assaulting a policewoman after a fracas outside a London nightclub. "A 25-year-old was charged with assaulting a female police officer and with disorderly conduct on January 6," a Metropolitan police spokeswoman said today.
Ms Dynamite, real name Niomi McLean-Daley, won the coveted Mercury Music Prize for her album A Little Deeper in 2002 and has won a string of prizes since, including Brit Awards and MOBOs (Music of Black Origin).
The star's brother, Kingsley Daley, 22, was charged with obstructing the police, while a women, Carlene Godwin, 24 was was charged with creating a public disorder in connection with the incident.
Registered Sex Offender Charged With Brutal Assault
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A registered sex offender has been charged with the brutal sexual assault of a woman who was at his home to take care of him.
Police said William Johnson, 55, attacked his caregiver at his home on Murdock Road, off The Plaza, in north Charlotte.
The victim said the assault happened several weeks ago, but she was too scared to come forward until now.
Neighbors said they only knew Johnson as the nice old man who used to ride his bike around the neighborhood.
"I just thought he was a regular guy moving into the neighborhood. You never saw anything weird or anything going on," said one neighbor.
According to the police search warrant, Johnson forced his caregiver into his home, tied her up and brutally sexually assaulted a woman. The warrant said Johnson then poured boiling water from a tea kettle over the victim's genitals.
Police said Johnson is a convicted sex offender who served less than 15 years of a 40-year prison sentence for a rape in 1988.
"It's real scary -- especially with kids around. I have my grandkids here on the weekends sometimes," said neighbor Cynthia Williamson.
Last year, Johnson was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender.
Man's face comes back to haunt victim of rape

When she closed her eyes and thought back to that November morning eight years ago, all she could see was her rapist's blood-shot eyes looking down at her.
And as the former University of Florida student, who was raped in 1997, scanned through the mugs of a photo lineup, one face besieged her.
"When I looked at each image in the photo array, I had this sick feeling in my stomach when my eyes landed on his face," the victim, who wished to remain unnamed, wrote Wednesday in an e-mail interview with The Sun.
The face that haunted her belonged to Leo Price Jr., a 52-year-old Gainesville man who was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual battery, attempted murder and armed burglary.
Price was linked to the rape after investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement matched his DNA obtained after an unrelated drug arrest to the 1997 rape.
Two weeks ago, the victim identified the attacker in a photo lineup in New York, where she lives, after Detective Patty Nixon with the Gainesville Police Department told her about the DNA match.
She identified Price as the man who entered her unlocked apartment in southwest Gainesville on Nov. 20 as she slept. Armed with a knife, the man tried to smother the then 19-year-old with a pillow and then he raped her.

Man Convicted In 1994 Rape
CINCINNATI -- A Walnut Hills man has been convicted of raping a woman at her Kenwood home more than 10 years ago, officials said.
DNA evidence connected Keith Hawkins to the rape of a then 71-year-old woman on July 17, 1994.
Hawkins allegedly climbed through a second-story window, tied the victim with a phone cord, threatened her with a knife and raped her. He also took money and other property.
He's scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 31. He faces up to 50 years behind bars.
Dothan Rape Arrest
A Slocomb man sits behind bars charged with first degree burglary and first degree rape.
Dothan Police arrested Darriek Smith in connection with the incident which occurred on New Year’s Eve.
Investigators say Smith allegedly broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend and forced her to have sex with him.
Witnesses who visited the victim's home alerted police, and when officers got there, Smith took off on foot. Police chased him down.
He's being held in the Houston County Jail on bonds totaling 100-thousand dollars.

Suspect Arrested for Killing LDS Missionary
Police in Chesapeake, Virginia, say they have arrested a suspect for the shooting of two LDS missionaries.
Late Wednesday night, police arrested 19-year-old James Rickey Boughton, Jr., without incident. Earlier in the day police found a gun believed to be the one used in the crime.
Boughton is being charged with first degree murder, malicious wounding, attempting malicious wounding and three counts of use of a firearm during the commission of those felonies. He is being held without bond in the Chesapeake City Jail.
Police say Elder Morgan Young of Bountiful, Utah, and Elder Joshua Heidbrink of Greeley, Colorado, were going door to door spreading the message of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when they came upon Boughton. Police say they saw him shoot another man, and then he shot them.
Elder Young was shot in the head and died of his wound. Elder Heidbrink was shot in the neck and flew home with family last night to recover. Elder Young's family is taking his body home to Utah for burial. He was suppose to finish his mission this March.

The Park City Police Department has added a white person to its most-wanted list, making an alleged drug dealer from Park City the first non-Latino placed on the department's controversial compilation of sought-after criminal suspects.
The police recently placed Sean Thomas Blair on the most-wanted list, which identifies the 10 known criminal suspects who the police most want to catch. Blair, 21, is wanted on a $10,000 arrest warrant, issued on Aug. 1, 2005.
He is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, which are second- and third-degree felonies. His last known address is 2449 Doc Holliday Drive, in Prospector.
Blair's placement on the most-wanted list is particularly significant in the aftermath of the original list, released in the fall. At that time, each of the suspects placed on the most-wanted list was a Latino. Leaders in the Latino community questioned the racial makeup of the list and wondered why, in a community that is mostly white, the list was exclusively Latino.
Mike Fierro, a Police Department detective involved in compiling the most-wanted list, said adding Blair was not a reaction to the criticism the police received last fall. Fierro said Blair's inclusion is based on the reasoning that the police use when considering suspects for the list.
"He's really No. 11," Fierro said, describing why Blair was left off the original top-10 list. "That guy was put on because he met the criteria."

When the police released the original list, Latino advocates were displeased with the racial makeup of the suspects.
Shelley Weiss, a local advocate [probable jew], said the list was "unfortunate" and "very frustrating" but accepted the Police Department's assertion that the list was not motivated by race. Robert Archuleta, the head of Latino-advocacy group Utah Coalition of La Raza, said it appeared the police were "targeting Hispanics."
Fierro said it seems that some of the suspects on the most-wanted list, especially those with older arrest warrants, have fled the U.S. and the police expect to replace them on the list.
He said the police are considering 21 people for placement on the list. Of those, 14 are Latino men, five are white men, one is a white female and one is an Asian man, Fierro said. The most serious charges they face are drug-distribution counts, he said.

Japanese police on Saturday arrested a US Navy sailor suspected of killing a Japanese woman near a US naval base in Yokosuka after the US Navy handed him over, reports said.
Earlier on Saturday a Japanese court issued a warrant for the arrest of the 21-year-old sailor, William Reese, who was in confinement on the US base at the mouth of Tokyo Bay after his name surfaced as a suspect, police said.
Shortly afterward, the US government agreed to transfer his custody to Japanese police, Kyodo News and Jiji Press said.
It was the first time that the US military had handed over a serviceman before Japanese police indicted a suspect in a murder case, Jiji said.
Reese's arrest is expected to have deep implications for the case of four US Marines accused of raping a 22-year-old Filipina in Subic, Olongapo City, on November 1.
Police in Kanagawa Prefecture said Friday that the sailor, a black male crewman of the US aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, had admitted to killing 56-year-old Yoshie Sato near the base on Tuesday.
But Reese has yet to reveal his motive for the alleged crime, the Japanese semipublic broadcaster NHK reported.
Sato was found dead and bleeding from her head in the entrance to a building after apparently being attacked on her way to work in what may have been a robbery gone wrong, the local media said.
Under a US-Japanese accord, the US military is not required to hand over suspects unless they are charged.
But after the rape of a 12-year-old girl by three US Marines in Okinawa in southern Japan in 1995, which sparked a public outcry, Washington agreed to look favorably on requests for a transfer of custody in cases of serious crimes.

Farmers Branch Police Chief Jimmy Fawcett has been suspended for 10 days without pay for making a racial slur about people of Vietnamese heritage last month in front of six officers who had convened to interview job applicants.
The suspension started Thursday, according to a written statement from the city.
"He also has apologized to the six people that were in the room," city spokesman Tom Bryson said Thursday.
Chief Fawcett, who acknowledged making the "inappropriate comments," did not return phone calls this week seeking comment.
The chief also is required to continue counseling with an organizational psychologist that began last month, according to the statement.
The incident has prompted the city to review the department's hiring practices.
The remark was made Dec.14, the day six job applicants were to face an interview board made up of department employees ranging from an administrative assistant to deputy chief. One of the applicants is Vietnamese-American. Neither he nor any of the other applicants were in the room when the comments were made, the city said.
Mr. Bryson said the city does not have a copy of the complaint because it was made orally. The city would not disclose the name of the complainant.
Jennifer Nguyen, grand public relations officer for the Vietnamese American Community of Greater Dallas and a member of the Vietnamese American Media Association, on Wednesday had called only for a public apology by the chief.
But the punishment handed down by the city manager is "fair enough," Ms. Nguyen said.
She said she hopes Asian-Americans realize that the comments reflect only on the chief, and not on the department or the city.
However, Ms. Nguyen said, ethnic slurs by such a high-ranking city official could hinder efforts to involve Asian-Americans in the city, Ms. Nguyen said.
"The Asian community just held a big banquet in September 2005, and for the very first time some members from the City Council attended, and we were so thrilled to welcome them with open arms, and now this is happening," she said. "So I'm afraid the Asian community is going to shy away and go back to themselves and not want to associate with American people anymore."
Chief Fawcett is a 32-year department veteran and has been chief for 15 years. He had an unblemished record before the incident, the city said.
Before beginning his law enforcement career in Sherman in 1971, he served in the Navy for four years, including assignments in Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines and Korea, according to his biography.
Chief Fawcett is also fifth vice president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and is slated to become president in 2010. He holds a Master Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, a bachelor's degree from Abilene Christian University and an associate degree from Grayson County Junior College.
Three of the department's 100 employees -- sworn officers and civilians -- are Asian-American, Mr. Bryson said.
According to the 2000 census, about 3 percent of the city's population is Asian-American.

Each organization participates in developing and strengthening strategic relationships between ESPN and diverse professional and industry organizations, academic institutions, suppliers, and community organizations.
4. Work/Life Effectiveness
ESPN is a 24/7 operation. Therefore, as a company, we face unique challenges around work/life effectiveness. We continue to work on ways to improve in this area for our employees. Efforts to support work/life include our on-site heath and fitness center, our continual expansion on health and fitness offerings, back up child care options, and flexible work arrangements. As the requirements for each department differ, each manager is responsible for working with employees to select creative solutions to address work/life issues, and supporting work/life initiatives that will work in their area of responsibility.
5. Culture Development
Managers and employees are responsible for doing their part to create a diversity-supportive environment. Human Resources provides on-going diversity skills and awareness training and educational programs for all employees. Managers encourage participation from their teams and set the example by striving to develop their own cultural competency.
6. Employee Development
Human Resources continues to expand and create inclusive opportunities for leadership/ professional development for all employees. Managers are responsible for identifying, mentoring and grooming a diverse group of future leaders.
