Merkel Discusses Gas and Meets With NGOs

Boosting trade and energy security dominated talks between President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday, though Merkel broke from the tradition of her predecessor, Gerhard Schröder, by meeting with human rights activists during her first visit to Russia as chancellor.
Putin warmly greeted Merkel in German at the beginning of their three-hour Kremlin meeting and -- as is his custom -- immediately turned the subject to trade.
"We have reached a new milestone, a new high in bilateral trade and economic relations: more than $32 billion in 2005," Putin said in comments broadcast on state television.
Merkel said she had reviewed data on the countries' economic relations in preparation for her visit, and noted "breathtaking growth in our exchange of real goods."
The volume of trade between the countries soared by 30 percent in 2005, Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said, Itar-Tass reported.

New Liberian president promises change
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has assumed office as Liberia's new president and Africa's first elected woman head of state, pledging to rebuild the war-battered country.
Speaking at her inauguration attended among others by Laura Bush, the US first lady and Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, Sirleaf promised Liberians a "fundamental break" from Liberia's violent past.
"We know that your vote was a vote for change, a vote for peace, security ... and we have heard you loudly," Sirleaf told Liberians in her inaugural speech on Monday.
"We recognise this change is not a change for change's sake, but a fundamental break with the past, therefore requiring that we take bold and decisive steps to address the problems that have for decades stunted our progress," she said.
Tough challenge
Sirleaf takes charge of a ruined nation struggling for peace after a quarter-century of coups and war. Speaking for the first time as president, she also promised to stamp out corruption to secure the trust of skeptical foreign donors whose aid is desperately needed to rebuild.
Sirleaf, wearing a cream and gold dress, was sworn in at a colourful open-air ceremony to the loud cheers from hundreds of foreign dignitaries and Liberians, including women wearing dresses emblazoned with their new president's portrait.
"Let us begin anew, moving forward into a future that is filled with hope and promise," Sirleaf said.
The new president vowed to fight corruption, which experts say has fuelled decades of instability, and to uphold a foreign donor-backed governance and economic management programme (GEMAP) that will oversee state spending.
"We will accept and enforce the terms of GEMAP. We will ensure competence and integrity in the management of our resources," said the Harvard-trained 67-year-old economist.
In a statement, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan congratulated Sirleaf, saying she had a "historic mandate to lead the nation towards a future of lasting peace and stability".
Tight security
Two US Navy warships were visible offshore for the first time since the war ended in 2003, in a rare show of support.
Security was tight, with armed UN peacekeepers surveying the scene with binoculars from atop surrounding buildings.
Sirleaf will serve a six-year term as head of Africa's oldest republic, founded by freed American slaves in 1847.
The country has known little but war, however, since a rebel group led by Charles Taylor plunged the country into chaos, invading from neighbouring Ivory Coast in 1989.
Taylor became president in 1997 but stepped down and was exiled to Nigeria as part of the 2003 peace deal brokered as rebels pressed on the capital.
He is now wanted on war crimes charges by a UN-backed war crimes court in Sierra Leone for his role in backing a brutal rebel group during that country's 1991-2002 civil war.
Rich in diamonds, iron ore and timber, Liberia was relatively prosperous and peaceful until a 1980 coup saw illiterate Master Sergeant Samuel Doe seize power and order cabinet ministers tied to poles in their underwear and executed.
Harvard-educated Sirleaf was finance minister at the time, but was spared, she told The Associated Press in a recent interview, "by the grace of God".
Twice imprisoned in the 1980s by Doe's junta, Sirleaf fled into exile.
Sirleaf inherits a nation in tatters. The capital has no running water or electricity, and unemployment is an astounding 80%. Experts say the country is filled with niggers.

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Hours after older sister Venus Williams was upset in the first round of the Australian Open, defending champion Serena Williams narrowly avoided an embarrassing first-round defeat of her own to unseeded Li Na of China. Williams rallied for a 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-2 win and advanced to the second round.
Williams returned with questions marks over her fitness after knee and ankle injuries forced a long lay-off and she narrowly avoided becoming the second defending champion to lose in the opening round.
Jennifer Capriati was the first in 2003.
Seeded 13th after her ranking plummeted when she played just 23 matches after winning in Melbourne last year, Williams served for the match in the 10th game of the second set before Li fought back to force a tiebreaker, which the Chinese woman dominated 7-1.
 
The pair traded service breaks in the deciding set before a relieved Williams snapped back into gear to avoid joining her sister Venus as a first round casualty.
Earlier in the day, Bulgarian teenager Tszvetana Pironkova, playing in her first major tournament, upset 10th-seeded Venus Williams 2-6, 6-0, 9-7.

This is one priceless piece of news for all employers and employees who have found themselves at the receiving end of rebukes or even worse, legal action from the race Gestapo, the Commission for Racial Equality.
Trevor Philips the part time head of the CRE who earns L100,000 a year from taxpayers for a four day week has been outed as having links with an illegal racist recruitment agency.
Thanks to courageous investigation by a trade journal, Personnel Today, Phillips was discovered to be on the advisory board of Rare Recruitment, a Hackney based company that places graduates, but only if they are "visibly from a non-white background".
The board also includes other high profile race relations campaigners such as Sandra Kerr, national director of Race for Opportunity, and Anne Watts, a member of the steering group for the proposed Commission for Equality and Human Rights.
Illegal
The expose should be an embarrassment to the Afro-Caribbean Phillips as the agency with its "no whites" policy is in clear breach of the 1976 Race Relations Act which made it illegal to discriminate against an individual because of their racial origin.
Section 14 of the Act says it is unlawful for an employment agency to discriminate against a person "by refusing or deliberately omitting to provide any of its services".
Personnel Today quoted Warren Wayne, employment partner at law firm Bird and Bird, who said having a "cut off" for the type of people a company takes on is positive discrimination. "It faces problems from candidates who see the service and say they want to participate but are blocked for being from the wrong background," he said.
Naomi Feinstein, partner at Lovells law firm, said that positive action only applied to the training of staff and refusing white applicants was "definitely positive discrimination". "Positive action is quite tightly defined - it relates to the provision of training where there is no one of [a certain] racial group employed doing certain work and there only will be if employers offer that training," she said.
Time to go
Perhaps it is time for Phillips, who is presently making a nuisance of himself on British campuses by telling anyone who will listen to him that British universities are "Colgate white", to quit his job as CRE boss as his position on the advisory board of a "no whites" recruitment agency is a conflict of interest.

Subject: free speech trial for Griffin
 
Free Speech goes on trial on Monday 16th January when Mark Collett and Nick Griffin attend Leeds Crown Court to defend themselves against the Crown's charges that both men used words and conduct likely to incite racial hatred when they gave speeches to private meetings in West Yorkshire two years ago.
The action was brought about after an "undercover" investigator working for the BBC filmed the speeches which were then screened on a BBC documentary; the sole purpose of which was to discredit the British National Party as a party of opposition to the Labour government. This is the kind of behaviour one could expect from military juntas and fledgling democracies in the Third World, not Great Britain which led the world in the implementation of a parliamentary democracy. But three important operations of the State; the BBC, West Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service, all run by Labour party appointees colluded to bring about this political show trial.
Can of worms
The charges will be vigorously defended and the trial will be used to demonstrate both the vicious attacks on free speech by the New Labour regime and to prove that Islamic fundamentalism is an evil faith which has no place in Britain. This is a can of worms which New Labour will live to regret opening. The trial and its consequences will have a tsunami effect across British society and overseas. Will a British government jail the leader of an opposition political party simply because that opposition leader warned his countrymen of the dangers of Islamic influence in Britain and Europe? This is not a trial about causing race hatred, it is free speech itself which is on trial and it seems that people of all backgrounds outside of Britain can see this much more clearly than many of our own compatriots.
Support for the Free Speech Two is reaching global dimensions. Several overseas media operations have expressed interest in the trial and will be covering proceedings from Leeds. A group of American free speech supporters is planning to hold a demonstration outside the British Consulate in Houston, Texas on Monday (16th) to coincide with the start of the trial. Donations and pledges of donations have come in from all parts of the globe; messages of support have been pouring into our inboxes from people in America, Australia, India, Brazil, eastern Europe, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Mexico and a dozen more nations.
Mountain of mail
Our treasury team had a fantastic surprise this morning (14th). Royal Mail managers had to lay on an extra van to deliver sacks full of mail to our Treasury team in Hull. They now have the weekend to plough through a mountain of mail which has arrived mainly in response to the personal letter of appeal which was sent out to all BNP members and known donors earlier this week.
Supporters from Civil Liberty and the newly formed Christian Council of Britain will be co-ordinating their own protests in Leeds throughout the trial alongside members of the British National Party.
Protests
Given the size of the demonstration and the high media profile the opening day of the trial is expected to generate the protests in support of Mark and Nick will be well stewarded with everyone attending expected to be acting in the most dignified manner.
Stewards will be in charge of the demonstration that take place in Leeds city centre over the next two weeks and advise the following:
- Please bring flags on flagpoles. Flags are not to be worn around the neck, like people attending a football match or five-year-olds playing "Superman".
- Please prioritise bringing St. George and flags of the British Isles featuring crosses, such as the Flag of Saint Andrew. These flags should take priority over Union Flags at this demo.
- No unauthorised persons are to speak to the press. On previous occasions Labour supporters have posed as journalists and have attempted to interview as many of free speech supporters as possible, trying to glean information from naive nationalists. Only a small handful of BNP spokespeople will be speaking to the press. We will announce who these people are on the day. If the 'press' attempt to speak to you at the demo please direct them to these named press spokespeople.
- On this occasion refreshments will also be provided free of charge to Free Speech supporters.
The Free Speech Two have set up their own Internet Blog which will be updated daily once the trial gets underway. It will be an all time first for the English legal system; a detailed account of a criminal and a political show trial on the Internet. "Spielberg's movie bears little resemblance to the piece of mushy leftist agitprop its critics describe. It does not suggest that terrorists and counterterrorists are morally equivalent...many of those [Israelis] in Munich are, if anything, slightly unbelievable in their constant self-interrogation and closely guarded humanism...'Munich' is about... vengeance and violence...necessary, justified violence...It's about the struggle to maintain some bedrock morality while engaging in immorality.
"Spielberg goes out of his way to be generous to Israel...The Munich massacre is but a prelude to the film, which follows a five-man assassination team led by Avner Kauffman (Eric Bana) as they track down and systematically kill a list of Palestinians provided by the Israeli government. The squad is scrupulous about protecting innocents -- more scrupulous than their real-life counterparts who, in a notorious 1973 case of mistaken identity, killed an innocent Moroccan immigrant in Norway, an incident left out of 'Munich'...
"The characters' deep ambivalence about the revenge killings they commit is actually profoundly flattering to Israel...There's never a moment or hint that the Palestinians didn't start it by doing something awful. ...I would guess that many Palestinians would find the movie unbearably self-congratulatory -- its central concern, after all, is the effect of retaliatory Jewish violence on the Jewish soul, not on the Palestinian flesh..."
David Brooks of the New York Times "informed us that a film about targeted assassination is a 'misleading way to start a larger discussion,' because the tactic was one that Israel soon left behind.' In 1972, Israel was just entering the era of spectacular terror attacks and didn't know how to respond. But over the years Israelis have learned that targeted assassinations, which are the main subject of this movie, are one of the less effective ways to fight terror.' Israel, he continued, 'much prefers to arrest suspected terrorists. Arrests don't set off rounds of retaliation, and arrested suspects are likely to provide you with intelligence, the real key to defanging terror groups.'
"As with so much Brooks writes, it's hard to tell whether he's being intentionally or accidentally misleading. Leave aside, for a moment, Israel's many assassinations of Palestinian militants in the occupied territories in recent years, including that of Hamas leader Sheik Yassin in March 2004. As Aaron Klein -- a captain in Israeli Defense Forces Intelligence -- reports in his new book, Striking Back: The 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre and Israel's Deadly Response, the hit squads targeting the Munich plotters, far from being an immediate and short-lived response to that horror, continued operating for two decades. They killed Atef Bseiso, the last man on their list, in Paris in 1992..."

Who is retaliating against whom in the Arab-Israeli conflict? That is the question

This film reminds me of a line that comedian George Carlin used in his comedy routine that went roughly like this: "Why do we call Israeli terrorists 'commandos,' and Palestinian commandos 'terrorists?" His question never got a laugh the two times I saw him use it with a live audience.
The thrust of the Spielberg movie is simple, fanfare notwithstanding: Israeli killers are conscientious and humane people, while Palestinians are always--no matter what--vicious killers.
Did you notice how one lone critical opinion of the movie by one Israeli diplomat (Ehud Danoch, Israel's consul general in Los Angeles), which mildly criticized the movie, got so much press in the US? It helped to promote the movie and to give the illusion of a "balanced" cast to the narrative, that it does not deserve. This supposed critical opinion reminded me of O'Reilly; how he always seems to find one e-mail from somebody in Montana who tells him that he is too liberal. He needs that to maintain an image that does not exist, just as Spielberg needs to maintain an image that he does not deserve.
This movie could easily have been a paid Israeli advertisement for its killing machine. In fact, it could be a recruitment movie for Israeli killing squads. It is a celebration of Israeli murder of Palestinians. When Israelis kill, it is always moral, and always careful, and always on target. On Dec. 26, yet another New York Times neo-con reviewer thinks that Spielberg was not sympathetic enough to the Israeli killers.
I was angry watching it; and I grew more angry as I observed the liberal Berkeley audience with whom I watched it react sympathetically to the movie, rooting for the Israeli head assassin, as he went about his "civilized" killing. I watched a humane Berkeley audience root for an Israeli killing team, in a story with Palestinian victims who were real people, with real blood.
An emotional moment for Spielberg, and presumably for American audiences was when the chief Israeli assassin talked with his young daughter in New York, stating that he missed her very much. Oh, yeah. That was the point at which you were expected to shed a tear or two; the music grew particularly sentimental at that point.
Spielberg's movie is based on a "non-fiction" book by journalist George Jonas, Vengeance, which took the Israeli account at face value. But in the book the Israeli killers did not express regret or second-thoughts of any kind. None! In the book -- but not in the movie-- the killers, according to Jonas, had "absolutely no qualms about anything they did." Hmmm...How could Spielberg have missed that?
I can connect to the story, in its details and personalities. The first victim of the movie was Wa'il Zu`aytir, and I knew his niece; I went to school with Abu Hasan Salamah's son--he was younger; and I knew the street and building where the three PLO leaders were massacred in Beirut. And let me tell you that none of the five people mentioned here had anything to do with Munich.
But why should this movie, a Spielberg movie, bother with facts, especially if they get in the way of a smooth pro-Israeli narrative? This movie is intended for mass audiences who know nothing about the facts of the conflict. That is exactly why it will work, and why it will deliver the propaganda goods.
 
Munich was not as planned an operation as has often been maintained. This was not planned months in advance, as Abu Iyad [left] maintained in his account written with Eric Rouleau [right], My Home, My Land. Abu Iyad for years exaggerated the claims about the "carefully planned" Munich operation, and PLO media at the time lied about PLO gunmen throwing grenades into the helicopters, so as to make the last shootout more of a fight that it actually was.
Massacred Palestinians who were being bombed by Israeli fighter jets in their refugee camps demanded heroes and heroism, and the PLO had to give them some, even if they were not legitimate heroes. The German police at the time were going to take the PLO out, no matter what, and no matter how much the Germans endangered the lives of the hostages, and they presumably had Israeli consent. An Arab League diplomat revealed this recently when he broke his silence in an interview on Ziyarah Khassah on Al-Jazeera. He should know: he was the negotiator with the Palestinian guerillas in Munich.
It can be argued that the Palestinians risked the lives of the hostages by taking them hostages, even if they did not intend to kill them. That is true. This is similar to the moral perils entailed by hijacking: the hijackers, any hijackers, are responsible, and should be held responsible for whatever endangerment to the lives and health of victims. Quite true.
But it is also true that the "State of Israel" has taken a nation hostage, and has been endangering the lives of millions of Palestinians since the inception of the Israeli state. It is a question of who is retaliating against whom. One of the many false premises of the Spielberg movie is that Israel only went on a killing rampage-and only against Palestinian "killers"--after Munich; that Munich was some kind of watershed.
Watershed it was not, except in Israeli propaganda brochures. Israel has been perpetrating killing rampages against Palestinians, mostly civilians, since before the creation of the state of Israel. And how could Spielberg lionize Golda Meir and forget to mention her most memorable quote: that "there is no such thing as the Palestinian people"?
Spielberg must have missed that too, as he portrayed her as Grandma goodness who was pushed into vengeance by Palestinian monsters. More humanization of Israel and dehumanization of Palestine. That is why the movie showed the director of the Israeli assassination machine with his child: the audience must see him as a caring human being.
Not a single Palestinian in the movie appeared unarmed. They all were terrorists, and their murder had to be justified, and Spielberg did a great service for the state of Israel in that regard. They should name some stolen Palestinian property in his honor.
What were the Israelis doing before Munich? Before Munich -- not after-Israelis placed a bomb under the car seat of Palestinian writer/artist, Ghassan Kanafani [right] and killed him and killed his 14-year-old niece. The teenage girl was not plotting the Munich attack when she was murdered by the Israelis; nor was her uncle. Kanafani wrote for Al-Hurriyyah magazine.
 
Israel, also before Munich, sent a letter bomb to Bassam Abu Sharif [left], a writer and journalist, and left him with life-long scars and bodily damage, and they also sent a letter bomb to Anis Sayigh [right], a scholar and researcher, who was not a member of any group. But Sayigh was a really diligent researcher, and Israel did not appreciate it.
Abu Sharif never had a military role. He was an innocent victim of Israeli killing. He nevr held a gun. I see him as a human being, and not as the armed and vengeful character that appears in Spielberg's movie; typical of US movies where Arabs appear, Arabs when they speak Arabic never need subtitles. We get them them when people speak in French and German, but Arabic is not important. It is not important to know what cheap natives say; we only need to know what expensive people say: Europeans and Israelis.
Do you notice that Hollywood still portrays Israelis as Europeans: they still don't want to accept that some half of all Israelis come from Asian and African countries. This makes it easier for the White Man to identify with them. And there is this element that is never mentioned about Palestinian attacks: and this is true of the present and of the past. It is not that some Palestinian leaders recruit or compel Palestinians to attack Israelis. It is the other way round.  Palestinians, regular rank-and-file pressure Palestinian leaders and commanders to send them on military or suicidal missions against Israeli targets. Munich occurred exactly like that. Palestinians in the refugee camps in Lebanon, those who were trained by Fatah [logo right] and by other groups, were lobbying for "action." Why? In February of the same year prior to Munich, Israeli jets bombed Palestinian refugee camps, and killed innocent people. This is what is missing in the movie. Most Palestinians who are killed by Israelis are unarmed and are killed not by conscientious and sensitive Israeli assassins-as they are outrageously portrayed in this movie-but by Israeli pilots who bomb refugee camps filled with unarmed civilians. Palestinians who are bombed from the air, long before Munich, are elderly and women and children in their beds. These are the victims that you will never see in a Spielberg movie.
Israel was killing Palestinians, and this was the context of pre-Munich. A small Palestinian group chose to seek venegeance--retaliation-- but they were not sure of their target, and this was only three months before Munich. One of the handful of people who knew about this was Abu Mazen, the Abu Mazen who today is the head of the puppet Palestinian Authority. But do you notice that US/Israel always forgive the past of those who submit to Israeli dictates? Look at how US and Israel forgave Anwar Sadat for his Nazi past. Abu Mazen was the money guy, and he dispersed the funds for Abu Dawud, who engineered the operation.
The American public and US media and popular culture are so enamored with the Mossad [logo left], the Israeli secret service, but the image of the Mossad does not match its actual reality. The best evidence is this movie: look at this obsession with Abu Hasan Salamah as the "mastermind" of Munich when he had nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with Munich. To be sure, Abu Hasan was a braggart, and had a big mouth, and would take credit for things he did not do, and would distance himself from failed "operations" that he planned, like the Sabena hijacking in 1972.
That was Abu Hasan: he lived the life of a playboy, and enjoyed a unique indulgent pampering from Abu Ammar who treated him like a son. Abu Ammar would never say no to Abu Hasan, on anything. But Abu Hasan had nothing to do with Munich, and this ostensibly all-knowing Mossad, did not know it. Former CIA director, Stansfield Turner, once said that the Mossad is a mediocre organization, but that it does outstanding PR. Former CIA man in Beirut Robert Baer said this about the Mossad--in an interview he gave to Al-Jazeera: "Let me tell you something, what people most err in in the Middle East, and I am responsible for my words to the end, is related to Israeli intelligence. To be sure, they can kill somebody in Paris or Rome or killing the wrong person in Finland or wherever else they did that [i.e. Norway]. To be sure they know Europe and Palestinians, and they know many things about Palestinians, but when it comes to the rest of the Middle East, I have not seen anything from their part that indicated their knowledge of those countries."
But this can never be maintained in a country that wants to exaggerate the prowess and knowledge of an intelligence agency not only to help feed the Israeli propaganda myth, but to also prepare the American public for more ruthless times and ways. So a very small number of people knew about it, and of course Abu Iyad was one of them. And Abu Iyad is the most important person on the list, and yet his name was not on the list, just to show you about how much--or how little-- Israel knew. Abu Iyad spoke more than he needed not only because he wanted to send a message to the enemy, but also because the wars of factions and "Abus" within the PLO necessitated a game of one-up-manship, and of wild exaggeration at times.
And while Black September was a paper name, and did not have a separate organizational existence or structure, several factions used the name for their own ends. Nobody consulted with Abu Iyad about Abu Hasan's use of the name for the failed Sabena hijacking. Abu Dawud is a key person here. And while his name was mentioned in passing, it was added after the fact in Israeli propaganda accounts. Abu Dawud was arrested in France for another reason in 1977, and he was released because there were no German or Israeli warrants for his involvement in Munich. That shows you.
Now, I will not give a blow-by-blow account of Munich. But I personally believe the account of Abu Dawud more than I believe Spielberg, i.e. Israeli propaganda claims, or even German police. (Abu Dawud's account is found in Abu Dawud, Filastin: Mina-l-Quds Ila-Muikh (Beirut: Dar An-Nahar, 1999). German police lied quite a bit about the case; they leaked to the press fanciful accounts of Palestinian infiltration of the workforce at the Olympic city, when none of that actually took place. They were too embarrassed to tell the truth. Similarly, the Israelis wanted to back the German account, especially as the violence at Munich was a propaganda bonanza for the Israelis in the West, just as Munich-this is not known in the West-was a propaganda bonanza for Fatah in the Middle East, as horrrific as the outcome was for all. And in that sense, the Germans, the Israelis, and Abu Iyad (and certainly Abu Hasan) lied about Munich, but not Abu Dawud, in my opinion. Abu Dawud is one of those 2nd tier PLO leaders who did not get corrupted in the messy Lebanese scene, and who did now allow the Gulf money that corrupted many PLO leaders to affect him.
Dawud was a man who was in charge of Beirut during the Lebanese civil war, and yet his name does not appear in any chronicle of the war because he was too low key, and because he never bragged. (he never talked even when the brutal Mukhabarat secret police in Jordan dangled him by his feet for days, while torturing him). People who saw him in jail at the time did not recognize him. But know this: your reliable "moderate" US allies in Jordan are quite proficient at torture. They are probably the best; they are helping the US in that regard as we speak. Most Lebanese did not even know Dawud's name. But this also explains why he survived, unlike say Abu Hasan Salamah, who married a Lebanese former Miss Universe, who introduced him to Lebanese bourgeois society. He could not get enough of that life. He developed a routine, and lived in a fancy apartment on Madame Curie Street in Beirut, and the routine he developed (going to the gym at the same time every day), made him an easy target for Israeli assassins.
Abu Hasan could get all the money he wanted for his own group from Yasser Arafat, and was doing a good job of maintaining not only good relations with the CIA but also with Lebanese right-wing groups. He became good friends with some right-wing militia leaders. Read the novel by David Ignatius, Agents of Innocence: it is based on Abu Hasan, although the author does not admit it.
It is interesting that in the Spielberg movie, the Israeli head killer (who was in the movie named "Troy"), was cast to be most appealing to the audience: a good looking and charismatic figure. But say what you want about Abu Hasan (and many people in Palestinian struggle, like Abu Dawud, did not like him) but he was a good looking and charismatic figure in real life. But in the movie the actor who played him in Spielberg's movie is not at all attractive.
Spielberg does not want the viewer to identify with any Palestinian in the movie. He just wanted to identify with the expensive human beings: the Israelis. The Arabs are worse than they were in Renoir's painting, the Mosque, where they are an unidentifiable blob. For Spielberg they were just armed, with no humanity. They were not supposed to evoke emotions, and you were not supposed to see them bleed, and if you did, you had to cheer for their killers.
The only ones that you had to feel sorry for were the Israelis who get killed, including the killers when they kill. The sentimental music that plays when Israelis die, differs from the music that plays when Palestinians die in "Munich." And no speaking roles for Palestinians were necessary. Why bother? Give one a line, and you have done your "objective" duty.
The list of prisoners that Palestinian guerillas submitted to German authorities for release, did not have just "200 Arab prisoners" on it, as the movie clams. It had the names of some 234 Arab and non-Arab prisoners, including Japanese and Germans, but that was not in the movie.
The statement that was issued by the guerillas gave a name to the Munich "operation": "Bir`im and Ikrit," the names of two (predominantly Christian) villages in northern Palestine, the people of which were expelled by Israeli occupation forces in 1948 for "security reasons." In 1972, the people of those villages petitioned the Israeli courts to return to their native villages, and the Israeli courts turned them down.
But if Spielberg were to use the actual name of the Palestinian commando "operation" in Munich ("Bir`im and Ikrit") he would have to relate to his audience those burdensome details and it would have detracted from his celebration of the Israeli killing machine.
But this begs the question: why is the Munich massacre more infamous than the genocidal Israeli bombardment of Palestinian refugee camps in February, prior to Munich? And why do the letter bombs to three Palestinian writers not get world attention? Why did American liberals not notice? Can you imagine what would happen if a Palestinian threw even a rose at an Israeli writer? Can you imagine the outcry among American leftists if a Palestinian were to say even a bad word to Amos Oz for example? That was the stature of writer Ghassan Kanafani among Palestinians.
I will not get into the military/intelligence background of the Israeli hostages as Abu Dawud does in his memoirs because the attackers did not know that information prior to the "operation." Abu Dawud gives many details about the military backgrounds of some of the Olympic hostages, but I do not think that this is appropriate because even Abu Dawud did not know that information before hand. I will not get into what actually happened at the site at the airport when the hostages were being transferred by their captors not only because the captors were responsible by virtue of the hostage "operation", but one can raise questions regarding the actual responsibility for the killing of the hostages. Abu Dawud cites Israeli newspapers from the 1990s in which writers raised questions about German police responsibility, and on how the German government never published autopsy reports of the hostages. The Israeli government also did not want to examine the bullets that killed the Israeli hostages. That would have settled the question, of course.
Dawud stressed that the attackers were under strict instructions to not shoot at the hostages, and you notice in the scene in the movie, that when they were storming the compound, they clearly struggled with the door and avoided shooting, when shooting could have shortened their entry time. Dawud claims that they were under strict orders to avoid using the grenades. He raises the possibility that the helicopter may have exploded from a bullet that hit its gas tank, but I don't know, and I have never relied on Spielberg, or on the book on which he based his account, for historical accuracy.
In retaliation for Israeli atrocities, Palestinians also have managed to assassinate Israeli military and intelligence leaders but those operations do not get Hollywood attention because the trend in US media and popular culture is that you should only show Palestinians when you can claim they are wantonly killing civilians, not when they are retaliating against Israeli military personnel.
It is not true that the Israeli response was confined to the assassination of the 11 Palestinians as was shown in the movie: Israel was also killing other Palestinians. Israeli "response" or initiative we should call it, was more massive and brutal that the operation of the secret team.
Three days after Munich, Israel ordered a bombing which required the use of some 75 Israeli aircraft (the largest attack since 1967). Their bombings of Palestinian refugee camps in Syria and Lebanon resulted in the killing of more than 200 civilians. And this is not because the Israelis were after a camp north of Sidon that was used for training the Munich attackers. That camp was not even hit (another sign that Israelis had no information about the real culprits of Munich) while other camps with civilians in them were bombed. While the "retaliatory" killings were being perpetrated by Spielberg's soulful assassins, Israeli bombing of Palestinian refugee camps continued uninterrupted.
The most glaring omission in the film, which shows you that the Israeli team was not only savage but also ignorant of their targets, was what transpired on July 21, 1973, when Ali Bushiki, a Moroccan waiter relaxing with his pregnant wife at a swimming pool in Norway, was murdered by Spielberg's beloved assassination team merely because Ali resembled what the hit team thought Abu Hasan Salamah looked like. The Norwegian police tracked and arrested the Israeli killers, but they were all released in a secret deal with the Israeli governement.
These inconvenient and uncomfortable facts about the Israeli killing team were omitted by Spielberg. Even Wa'il Zu'yatir, the PLO representative in Rome who knew nothing about Munich, and was an academic with close ties to Leftist circles in Italy, was shot 14 times. He almost certainly never held a gun in his life. Zu`ytir was more interested in literature than he was in military affairs, on which he knew nothing. The PLO representative in France, Mahmud Hamshari also had nothing to do with Munich; he too was "liquidated."
The movie, it seems, relished detailing the 1973 Israeli revenge in Beirut. Spielberg really enjoyed depicting that act by Israeli hit squads. But who were the three PLO personalities killed in that so noble endeavor? And who cares about the details? Kamal Udwan was the Fatah/PLO leader responsible for the West Bank and Gaza. He not only had no responsibilities in Europe, but he opposed "operations" in Europe, and even those by Black September. More than that, Udwan was one of the most moderate PLO leaders, having accepted the two-state solution back in 1970, before any of his colleques in Fatah. 
Another victim, Abu Yusuf An-Najjar, was in charge of intelligence in Lebanon-Lebanon, not Europe. While Udwan had no knowledge of Munich, Abu Yusuf may have heard about it but had no role whatever in it. The third victim was another Palestinian writer: and Israelis have no qualms about the murder of Palestinian poets, artists, and writers: Kamal Nasir [right] was a poet, who was killed in his bed. The movie did not tell you that by the time the Israeli terrorists finished with their retaliation "mission," some 100 Palestinians and Lebanese were murdered on that day in April 1973.
The PLO representative in Cyprus also had nothing to do with Munich; he was the intelligence envoy of Abu Yusuf An-Najjar. And some people targeted on the list of the Israeli murder team were not only not involved with Black September, but some were not even members of the Fatah organization. Basil Al-Kubaysi was a Palestinian scholar who had just completed his PhD in political science; I recently had dinner with Basil's best friend in college in Candada. Kubaysi was in the PFLP and not in Fatah. The same for Muhammad Budia: he was with Wadi` Haddad, and not with Black September.
But we can rest assured the film is accurate: Spielberg offered the script to Dennis Ross and his former boss Bill Clinton to verify the "accuracy" of the film's Middle East political and historical references.
Spielberg portrayed the neighborhood where the PLO leaders and others were killed with all the features of the Orientalist imagination. The houses were old style with arches, and the place was protected like a military base. In reality, the PLO leaders lived in a civilian residential building in the most modern and upper class neighborhood of Verdun in Beirut. But why bother with that fact?
The Munich movie does not tell you that on September 16, and 17, Israel launched an invasion of south Lebanon, razing the refugee camp of Nabatiyyah. The Lebanese newspapers at the time had on the first page a picture of a smashed civilian car with seven Lebanese civilians crushed inside after an Israeli tank ran over their car near Jwayya in south Lebanon. That must have been too messy for Spielberg to cover. The car had stopped at the Israeli checkpoint that was set up at the entrance to the village. Were those civilians in the car also involved in Munich?
As Spielberg's movie ends, we see written on the screen the statement that Abu Hasan Salamah was later "assassinated." Spielberg forgot to add that he was "assassinated" by a massive car bomb in a crowded street in Beirut, which killed and injured scores of civilians--but hey--they were only Arabs and their blood is too cheap to mention.

Hoffman [right, with father]: The US Constitution mandates a separation of church and state; that is to say, there can be no establishment of any single religion as the official creed of the US government. The Judaics managed to get around this through the "Holocaust." By pretending that the "Holocaust" is history, they turn what is actually a synagogue into a "holocaust museum."
This is the case in Washington D.C. where President Ronald Reagan--the American leader who urged Saddam Hussein to wipe out the Islamic Republic of Iran--instituted the "US Holocaust Museum" on federal property. But this "museum" does not adhere to rules of evidence and does not submit its exhibits to critical inquiry and investigation. Religion cannot be questioned or doubted. Therefore, the "Holocaust" is a religious cult masquerading as history. The US "Holocaust Museum" is actually a synagogue comprising a house of worship for the first state religion of the United States of America, Holocaustianity.
Mehr News: Mr. Hoffman, why does the European Union and the US government inhibit critical discussion about the "holocaust"?
Hoffman: Europe has a long history of suppressing freedom of speech, in spite of having the temerity to lecture Muslims about "democracy" and "human rights." Historically, nations like France, Austria and Germany never adopted the standard of freedom of speech for everyone. Instead, they have clung to the notion of the old Church that "error has no rights." Error may have no rights, but who is to say what constitutes error in history? Who has the authority to decide how we fix the record of history? A masonic judge? A Zionist tribunal? A Prime Minister? The grand rabbi? The pope? The UN?
I don't think we can have real history by decree. Real history is based on curiosity and investigation, not dogma and preconception. The truth about the alleged homicidal gas chambers of Auschwitz, like the truth about the religion of Judaism itself (which is not based on the Old Testament, but on the traditions of the rabbis), would destabilize the whole raison d'etre of modern Europe.

It's interesting that the System's media report that Arab jubilation over Sharon's illness has been "fairly restrained." In the eyes of our rulers, this is a legitimate subject for discussion--Arabs gloating over the misfortune of an Israeli. In this case, the media report that even those primitive Arab savages have muted their bloodlust (somewhat) in honor of their grudging recognition that Sharon became a humanitarian late in his life.
Ha! Only mass amnesia permits the establishment media to get away with this phantasmagoria. Humanitarian? It was not too long ago that Sharon blew the quadriplegic Sheik Yassin out of his wheel chair with a well-aimed missile, and had Elie Hobeika [right], a war crimes witness against him, murdered in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Arab "intellectuals" are chanting "Sabra-Chatila," their old war cry that has proved quite impotent over the years. Sharon's seldom mentioned but single most atrocious war crime was not Sabra and Chatila, it was his terror bombing of the city of Beirut in the summer of 1982. He killed about 20,000 civilians, indiscriminately bombing hospitals, schools, old age homes and apartment blocks. Arab leaders have failed to commemorate this holocaust in any way. Incredible.
Nowhere does the media interview those prominent Kabbalistic rabbis who cursed Sharon only a few months ago, to determine whether the rabbis are gloating over his mortal illness. If Sharon dies soon, there will probably be some after-the-fact measly human interest squib somewhere in the back pages of the LA Times or the NY Times mentioning the pulsa voodoo as a kind of perverse joke, and that will be it. They dare not linger on the topic.
It's not good for image politics to remind the American people that Judaism harbors voodoo ceremonial death curse wizards. I see that Thomas Sowell, the esteemed African-American "free market philosopher" has joined the war with Iran hysteria, announcing in his nationally syndicated column that if Iran gets "the bomb" it will fall into Osama bin Laden's hands and we'll all die.
He opines that the failure to launch an attack on Iran now, amounts to the "suicide of the west." Sowell, a high and mighty PhD, is too ignorant--or at least he imagines his readers are --to know that the Islamic Republic of Iran was for years engaged in a cold war with the Taliban of Afghanistan. Several Iranian diplomats were killed by the Taliban. But to Dr. Sowell, all militant Muslims are allies. In this he's rather like a man from Mars arriving on earth and imagining that Martin Luther and Pope Leo X were allies--after all, they were both militant Christians weren't they?
Sowell doesn't remind his readers that the Israelis have nukes; and their de facto German colony has supplied them with two Dolphin-class submarines whose torpedo hatches have been widened to accommodate Israeli nuclear missiles. Should the White House ever be graced by a patriotic president and an independent Congress seeking to withdraw military aid from the Zionists, the missiles on those German-Israeli subs will be aimed straight at America. The "suicide of the West" entails the surrender of our Congress to the Israeli lobby. This datum is taboo for Sowell, and the hand wringing over the "decline and fall of America" which is ruled permissible to the conservative infants, must, by definition, steer clear of any critique of Israeli state terror and hegemony over our nation. When you live in a world where certain vital information is taboo, there is a disassociation from reality, as we have seen in the Bush White House and its pipe dreams about Iraq. TEHRAN, Iran Jan 15, 2006 -- Iran said Sunday it would sponsor a conference to examine the scientific evidence supporting the Holocaust, an apparent next step in hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's campaign against Israel and a move likely to deepen Tehran's international isolation.
Ahmadinejad already had called the Nazis' World War II slaughter of 6 million European Jews a myth and said the Jewish state should be wiped off the map or moved to Germany or the United States.
Those remarks prompted a global outpouring of condemnation, and Tehran further raised international concern last week when it resumed what it called "research" at its uranium enrichment facility.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. organization that monitors nuclear proliferation, said Iran was resuming small-scale nuclear enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for atomic bombs.
That, in turn, prompted Washington and its allies to renew their push to take Iran before the U.N. Security Council for the possible imposition of sanctions.
The United States, its European allies and Japan believe Tehran is trying to build a nuclear weapon. Iran denies the charge and says its nuclear program is only for electricity generation.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi did not disclose where or when the Holocaust conference would be held, nor would he say who would attend or what had prompted Tehran to sponsor it.
On Saturday, however, Ahmadinejad urged the West to be sufficiently open-minded to allow a free international debate on the Holocaust. Asefi adopted that theme.
"It is a strange world. It is possible to discuss everything except the Holocaust. The Foreign Ministry plans to hold a conference on the scientific aspect of the issue to discuss and review its repercussions," Asefi told reporters.
Earlier this month, the Association of Muslim Journalists, a hard-line group, proposed holding a similar conference, but Asefi said he was not aware of the association's wishes. He said the conference he announced was planned and supported by the ministry.
Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., a holocaust survivor who was born in Budapest, Hungary, has said he understood Iran was considering a conference that would call into question evidence that the Nazis conducted a mass murder of European Jews during World War II.
Israel and Iran had good relations until the 1979 Islamic revolution led by Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Israel had backed the shah, apparently prompting Khomeini to term it the "Little Satan."
Ahmadinejad has adopted rhetoric reminiscent of Khomeini, seemingly trying to breathe life back into the waning revolutionary spirit in the country, whose residents are not traditionally anti-Jewish.
Before the revolution about 100,000 Jews lived in Iran, but three-fourths fled during the upheaval.
Ahmadinejad, who took office in August, caused an international outcry in October by calling Israel a "disgraceful blot" that should be "wiped off the map."
Leaders around the world also condemned him after he called the Nazi slaughter of Jews during World War II a "myth." He later said that if the Holocaust did happen, then Israel should be moved to Germany or North America, rather than making Palestinians suffer by losing their land to atone for crimes committed by Europeans.
Since the Islamic revolution, Israel has considered Iran a primary and existential threat. As Tehran's nuclear program has moved forward, the Israelis who have nuclear weapons but do not to admit possessing such an arsenal have refused to rule out using military force to destroy the Iranian program.

Jean-Paul Bizimana, alias Xavier Van Dame, was to be sentenced at a hearing scheduled Friday.
Three other men were arrested in March 2003 in connection with the killings, and have been sent to the United States to stand trial in the deaths of the two American victims.
Rwanda rebels hacked and bludgeoned the travelers to death in a remote rain forest near Uganda's borders with Congo and Rwanda where the party had gone to see the rare animals. The rebels specifically targeted English-speaking people in a bid to weaken U.S. and British support for the new Rwandan government.

ST. LOUIS, MO, United States (UPI) -- A 13-year-old in St. Louis has been charged with three felonies that could lead to three consecutive life sentences if he is convicted.
Sherman Burnett Jr. allegedly assaulted physically and sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl and then left her in a wooded area where she was found 11 hours after her family reported her missing, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
After a judge ruled Wednesday that Burnett could be tried as an adult, he was formally charged with child kidnapping, forcible sodomy and first-degree assault.
A corrections official said Burnett is the youngest inmate he can remember in the county jail in 30 years. He will be held in the infirmary pending an evaluation.
At Wednesday`s hearing, a psychologist testified that Burnett was medicated for attention deficit disorder while he was in juvenile detention.
Burnett also faces misdemeanor charges stemming from an unrelated incident. He allegedly offered an 11-year-old girl $50 for sex and then knocked her brother down.
Son's rape charges rock Ambassador Boateng
LAST November, on the orders of Paul Boateng, Britain's envoy to South Africa, the high commission in Pretoria was tied with a symbolic giant ribbon in honour of the African National Congress government's "16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children".
This jumbo-sized salute to the ANC's campaign against abuses of women compounded the embarrassment last week when Boateng's 21-year-old son Benjamin was accused of twice raping a girl aged 17, first in an alleyway and then on a beach.
Although the alleged rapes are claimed to have taken place after a party on New Year's Eve, the police have not yet initiated proceedings. They confirm that sexual intercourse took place but Boateng Jr claims it was with the girl's consent. Here.
Miss. school superintendent is accused of rape
It's front page news and the talk of Marks, Miss.
"If you have been charged with this crime, you shouldn't be working," said concerned citizen Ida McCray.
"I don't think he's capable of doing what he's accused of," said Ned Gathwright.
Quitman County School Superintendent Valmadge Towner is accused of raping a district employee.
According to an affadavit, the alleged victim says Superintendent Towner dragged her into his office and forced her to have sex. She told a court officer the rape happened Sept. 15. A warrant shows Towner was arrested almost one month later on Oct. 12.
"She goes to Ole Miss, she's working on her doctorate now, you know, so yes, she's a young lady that's who's trying to do something, be somebody and to be scandalized and brutalized by somebody she's been employed by, it's just not fair," said Doris Baker a friend of the alleged victim.
Towner supporters, including his father, tell a different story.
"Just some trumped up charges, they have not gotten over the election," said Rev. Ezra Towner, Jr.
Other Quitman County residents think Towner should quit, and want the school board to take action.
"We can't make him resign, we can ask, but we can't make him because we did not appoint him, he is an elected and the statute tells us what we can and can't do," said Quitman Co. School Board President Irma Bell.
All anyone can do now is wait for the courts to decide this case that has a county divided.
Substitute Teacher Charged With Assault
(Columbia) - A substitute teacher at Hand Middle School is out of jail on charges that he assaulted a student.
Marvin Price, 37, is charged with one count of simple assault.
According to a police report, Price grabbed the throat of a sixth grade student on Monday to see if he had gum in his mouth.
"I think we'll find out in court that neither the parents were wrong for protecting the children or I was wrong, but I guess what I think happened was just a misunderstanding," Price told News19 Friday as he left jail.
Price had been working at the school since August, but has since been placed on administrative leave.
"Obviously, in terms of choking a child and having the child spit out gum in those circumstances is certainly not something we endorse," says Richland One spokeswoman Karen York.
Pastor is arrested over 'child witch' cruelty claims
The pastor of a London-based African church has been arrested on suspicion of child cruelty after claims that he had been branding children as witches and ordering that they be sent back to Africa where he would pray for them to die. Pastor Dieudonné Tukala, 40, was held after a raid on his South London home. Mr Tukala, who is married with two children, heads a Congolese church with a congregation of about 400 in Tottenham, North London. Immigration officials are also investigating Mr Tukala, who arrived in Britain in 1999 with an Angolan passport and was granted exceptional leave to remain.
The allegations against Mr Tukala were uncovered by Angus Stickler, who reported the case on BBC Radio 4's Today and on the BBC Two programme Newsnight last night, when video clips were shown from services recorded by one of the church elders. The children of up to ten families are alleged to have been affected at the church, one of more than a hundred Congolese churches in and around the capital. In one example, the BBC reported, a father branded his nine-year-old son with a steam iron. A former church elder told Stickler that he was present when the boy was said to be possessed with evil spirits and alleged that Mr Tukala told the parents to beat him until he confessed to being a witch. A TEACHER and his pals were beaten by a gang of young thugs in the latest in a series of attacks along a Leeds bus route.
Chris Davies and three of his friends, including a woman, were assaulted by a gang of more than 20 teenage boys and girls who took over the top deck of the First Leeds No 3 Cottingley bus on Saturday night.
Seven weeks ago a man was forced to take other male passengers home. They then tied him to a chair and beat him. He was left locked-in until he was found the next day. [...]
"There was an atmosphere straight away and there were teenagers - mostly aged 13 to 17 but a few aged about 19 - sitting everywhere occupying two seats each," said Mr Davies.
"They immediately began making offensive remarks, including 'Get off the bus you white trash'.
"We tried to play it down and remain cool. We said we were just going home and had no problem with them.
"Then we noticed one of them pull his hood up and his scarf over his face and things got more intimidating.
"Suddenly a girl of about 13 shouted something and punched one of our group - a woman in her 20s - in the face. Then there was uproar. Someone came from behind and tried to pull her shoulder bag over her head and was pulling her hair.
"My two male companions leapt to her aid, but they were forced down the deck to the front of the bus. I jumped up to try to help her and they punched and kicked me to the floor.
"They were stamping on me and beating me. It was like a whirlwind.
"Suddenly, the bus halted near the United Reformed Church on Dewsbury Road and they rushed off. One of them gave me a final a punch and kick and I went headlong down the stairs. Here.

It was during the second day of questioning that Sam Alito's wife broke down, wept and left the room after hearing Sen. Kennedy imply that her husband was a bigot.
What was Kennedy's evidence?
In 1985, Sam Alito belonged to Concerned Alumni of Princeton. He had joined to protest the ouster of ROTC from campus. Alito was neither an officer nor active, but like future Sen. Bill Bradley, he joined.
What were CAP's sins? Headed by National Review publisher William Rusher, CAP had a magazine called Prospect that carried an essay opposing affirmative action and regretting that Princeton had ever gone co-ed.
Yet support for single-sex education, as practiced at Smith and dozens of women's colleges, is hardly a mark of bigotry. And opposition to affirmative action and quotas is core conservative dogma.
So, what is going on here? Answer: a smear. Because Judge Alito belonged to an alumni group that had a magazine which had an offensive article, he must share those views. Therefore, he is a bigot and the Senate must reject him as morally unqualified to sit on the Supreme Court.
This is a textbook example of what liberals used to call McCarthyism.
Why are the Democrats disgracing themselves and disgusting decent people with such tactics? Why are they desperate to kill the nomination of Sam Alito?
The answer, in a word, is abortion. By the end of the third day of hearings, analysts had toted up the questions. The subject that had been brought up in more questions than any other was abortion.
Why? Because, as Sen. Chuck Schumer fears, Judge Alito may just vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Indeed, it is possible that no party has profited as greatly from the abortion industry as the Republican Party. When one considers the political situation in 1973, with a long-time Democratic Congress, Nixon's resignation just around the corner and a Supreme Court full of liberal Republicans, it is amazing to consider how the righteous anger of millions inspired by the Roe v. Wade decision has helped reshape the American political landscape.
So, it was intriguing to read the uncharacteristically insightful Eleanor Clift making the following observation in Newsweek:
Now that the GOP is within striking distance of overturning Roe, they're having second thoughts ... "Any activist will tell you they'd rather have the issue out there than to have it resolved," says this pro-choice Republican, who has worked on the Hill and for various Republican interest groups. "If Roe were overturned, we'd be electing Democrats as far as the eye can see."
There has been a Republican majority on the Supreme Court for over a decade. We are currently blessed with a Republican House, Senate and White House as well. Republicans are likely approaching the zenith of their political power, and they will probably never be more able to act to end the national shame than they are today. The fact that two pro-abortion figures, Giuliani and Rice, are being openly bruited about as presidential candidates in 2008 tends to indicate that they will never be more inclined to do so either.
But the dark and dirty secret of the Republican Party is that it is only nominally pro-life. Given the history of the last 33 years, voting for vocally pro-life Republicans has proven to be as ineffective a way to stop the slaughter as voting for abortionette Democrats would have been. Keep this in mind before you get too excited about Supreme Court Justice-in-waiting Alito sailing through his Senate confirmation.

TAYLORSVILLE - The Bush administration's support of a "guest worker" program and other exceptions to U.S. immigration policy is feeding a $140 billion organized criminal racket that makes victims of citizens and immigrants alike, Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly said Saturday.
Schlafly said apologists who say the border ought to be loosened because immigrants are needed to work jobs Americans don't want undermine the nation's egalitarian principles.
"There isn't any job that Americans are too good to do," said Schlafly, an ardent proponent of sealing the U.S. borders. "This is creating a serf class, a peasant class. . . . That's not America."
Worse, she said, if the tide of illegal immigration to the United States - estimated at 1 million people annually - doesn't stop, "we might as well give up on the drug war."
But she also talked about the crimes committed on the immigrants, most from Mexico, who pay $2,000 to $50,000 to human smugglers to get them across the southern border in trucks with no food or water and little oxygen. Once here, they are at the mercy of an underground economy peopled by corrupt employers who underpay them or don't pay them at all.
Large corporations join in the victimization when they sponsor workers from overseas, claiming they have a shortage of qualified workers here, which isn't true, Schlafly said. The hitch is those foreign workers remain at their corporate employers' mercy, virtually indentured because if they quit their jobs, they can't get another.
Cheap immigrant labor depresses all wages while corrupt employers skimp on benefits, leaving taxpayers to make up the rest.
"If taxes were paid on what is earned in the underground economy, that would be enough to wipe out the entire national debt," Schlafly said. "Bush talks about bringing in willing workers. There are probably 5 billion people in the world poorer than Mexicans."
The 80-year-old founder of the Eagle Forum was the keynote speaker at the annual convention of the conservative organization's Utah chapter, held at Salt Lake Community College's Redwood campus in Taylorsville.
A powerful speaker, Schlafly has led the national conservative movement since 1964, when her book, A Choice Not An Echo, was published. A close ally of former Sen. Barry Goldwater, the Arizona Republican who lost that year's landslide presidential election to Lyndon Johnson, Schlafly fought the Equal Rights Amendment to a standstill and has continued to demonize feminists. She organized the Eagle Forum in 1972, and still writes a syndicated newspaper column and is a radio personality.
The convention drew about 200 people and was timed to excite conservative activists about the upcoming state legislative session, said Utah chapter president Gayle Ruzicka.

Shots Ring Out During New Orleans Parade
A parade intended to show unity and support for the city's rebuilding was instead marred by violence Sunday when shots rang out, wounding three people as the event drew to a close.
Not long after the parade wrapped up, police officers patrolling the route heard gunfire. They then found a 34-year-old man with multiple wounds, police spokesman Gary Flot said.
Minutes later, after more shots rang out, officers discovered an 18- year-old woman wounded in the leg. A man, 20, also was shot in the leg, in the same area.
All three were admitted to local hospitals, where the 34-year-old was listed in guarded condition; the 20-year-old was in fair condition, and the 18-year-old in good condition Sunday night, Flot said. Their names were not immediately available.
A crowd of thousands had gathered for what had been a festive occasion for New Orleanians determined to make their way back from temporary homes in places such as Houston and Atlanta.
The Social Aid & Pleasure Club All-Star Second-Line featured clubs marching in support of New Orleans' renewal and their own role in the city's future.
"This is not what I came back here to see," said Delanda Garner, who has been staying in Houston.

DALLAS - Curtis Ferguson wants to rid the language of the n-word, which he says is a destructive force in the black community.
So the 40-year-old high school art teacher pitched a borrowed tent earlier this week outside a community center in a predominantly black neighborhood to begin his fast, which will end on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
His goal: to raise awareness about the damage caused by the derogatory word, particularly among young blacks.
"I wanted to show sacrifice. I wanted to show that people have given up so much to be where they are," said Ferguson, who vowed to go without food or a change of clothes until noon Monday. "You have our youth calling themselves these words, and all of these words have a perception to them."
Ferguson placed partial blame on hip-hop music for popularizing the word, which he said stereotypes blacks as "lazy and ignorant."
He added that some in the black community have heard the word for so long that they have come to fit the stereotype.
"I'm telling you it makes a difference in that child's life what he thinks of himself," said Ferguson, father of four boys.
Since Tuesday, the "N-word Free Campaign" has attracted supporters spanning three generations to the community center.
Sitting on a cot in a green canvas Army tent, Ferguson on Friday met with religious leaders, community members and former students as speeches by King played in the background.
Keyeonia Clark, a former student of Ferguson's, remembered her senior year in high school when the teacher overheard her say the word.
"He heard the word and he just pulled us aside and said, 'That's not the type of language you should use. You don't know the definition of that word. A nigger is an ignorant person. You're not that, you're an African-American,' " recalled Clark, 29. "To me, Mr. Ferguson, he's taken the first step in sending the message out."
Minutes later, Willie Ferguson Jr., a 69-year-old grandfather not related to the teacher, visited the tent.
"It brings back memories from when I was a young kid being raised up here as a black person," he said. "That's been a hateful word for as long as I can remember. ... I think he's got a good thing going on."

After the reading at HalfKing last night--my thanks and appreciation to everyone there for their generosity and bonhomie--I heard about the scandal that had burst in the literary world that day with the force of a warblogger's bladder.
The Smoking Gun's detailed expose of James Frey's harrowing memoir A Million Little Pieces.
This and the J.T. Leroy put-on call into question not only the caliber of the literary-critical-publishing world's bullshit detector but the desire of so many to accept as gospel and marrow truth that which is outre, transgressive, and self-promoting. Fashion yourself as "a survivor," and voyeuristic readers will feel the excitement of a dangerous voyage with so many valuable lessons to be learned along the way. As Joy Press wrote in the Village Voice on the occasion of Leroy's The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, "LeRoy's books call like sirens to emotional tourists looking to vacation in someone else's torment. Abuse, gender confusion, abandonment, prostitution, addiction--all the sensationalistic obsessions of our era, wrapped in one neat adolescent package."
Save for the adolescent bit, this is the appeal of Frey's memoir to the millions of Oprah readers who made his book a mega-bestseller. The Smoking Gun stresses how the graphic, four-letter, vomit-saturated nature of the book makes it not the usual Oprah fare, but Oprah and her disciples have no problem with rough stuff as long as the sinner or victim find a rainbow of redemption at the end of the alley. They wanted to believe the worst in the book because it made for a steeper arc of ascension. That's my problem with the whole victim-survivor literary genre, apart from the iffiness of accepting anyone's memory as an accurate account of events that happened ten, twenty years ago. (Memories blur and blend and are reshaped by the rememberer into the narrative of his or her life that s/he have adopted. People incorporate things that happened, things that didn't happen, things they wish had happened, and things that happened to someone else into a too-smooth storyline in which everyone's character is fixed, except the sensitive narrator's.) I'm just automatically suspicious of every tale of woe that's peddled as a tale of redemption. The whole concept of redemption seems fishy to me, another form of sentimentality. How many people do you know have found redemption? What does "redemption" really mean? It's got a lofty religious sound, but the vast majority of people improve or worsen in varying degrees over time, and even those who radically turn their lives around or pull themselves out of the abyss still have to go on doing the mundane things we all do, often suffering relapses or channeling their sobriety and sadder-but-wiser maturity into passive-aggressive preening of their own moral goodness. Most change for better or worse is undramatic, incremental, seldom revealed in a blinding flash or expressed in a climactic moment of heroic resolve. The whole cult of "redemption" has acquired a Hollywood-holy aura emanating from the therapist's couch. And when a tale of redemption becomes a success story, it's as if the monetary reward is the special prize bestowed on spiritual growth in this bountiful, forgiving land, where each closeup tear from Oprah and her readers is worth its price in gold (closing price today: $545.70 an ounce).

Hindered by the bashful modesty that is the byproduct of my Catholic upbringing, I can't take credit for the swift cosmic justice meted out to Michael Fumento after he saw fit to challenge me in a war of wits. It was a war he could not win, given the egregiousness of his Boogie Nights mustache, and his paucity of sophistication. He may wow the other guys in the tanning salon with his "clever comebacks," but the Algonquin Round Table would send him back into the kitchen for additional seasoning if he laid his lame stuff on them. It's true that I did appear shamanistically prescient when I accused Fumento being jealous of a successful magazine like Vanity Fair when he was so obviously dependent on the metallic tit of donorship ("Like so many rancorous rightwing underachievers, he resents a magazine--any magazine--that is successful on its own and carries actual advertising rather than being bankrolled by some billionaire madman or non-profit think tank itself dependent on corporate slush funds"), only to have this bit of news brighten the following day (courtesy of Editor and Publisher):
"Scripps Howard News Service (SHNS) announced Friday that it severed its relationship with Michael Fumento -- a senior fellow at the conservative Hudson Institute -- for not disclosing he had taken payments in 1999 from agribusiness giant Monsanto. The payments were revealed by BusinessWeek Online, which also broke a similar story revealing columnist Doug Bandow receiving payments. Copley News Service subsequently dropped Bandow. [The Hudson Institute is the also the ideological inn that recently invited the indicted "Scooter" Libby in from the chill.]
"In a statement released Friday, SHNS Editor and General Manager Peter Copeland said Fumento 'did not tell SHNS editors, and therefore we did not tell our readers, that in 1999 Hudson received a $60,000 grant from Monsanto.' "SHNS sent out an advisory to subscribers last night that read: 'The Jan. 5 column by Michael Fumento about new biotechnology products from Monsanto should have included more information. If you go to Fumento's blogsite, you'll find what really befelled him. Twasn't karma. Twasn't his foolish trifing with me. No, it is a story as old as Greek myth: he was brought down by his own slick hubris.
At the top of his blog, flanking his name, are the adjectives he wears as proudly as armor.
Factual Powerful Original Iconoclastic
Fumento doesn't seem to understand that there are certain things that others can say about you that sound fatuously conceited when you say them about yourself.
It's one thing if your friends describe you as "gracious" or "generous," but you go around boasting, "I'm an incredibly generous person," or "'Gracious'--that's me to a 'T,'" it makes you sound like some society dame toasting herself with too many Martoonies. Similarly, being described by others in print as "bold and decisive" is forgivable boilerplate, if you go around telling people, "I'm bold and decisive," they'll begin to think you're half-mad, or Al Haig (same diff).
So for Fumento to proclaim himself as Original, Powerful, and Iconoclastic was to invite the wrath of the gods, who have their own way of administering reality checks.
This episode has provided additional confirmation to my suspicious mind after our friends on the right. From now on I'm going to assume that every conservative ideologue with a thesis to grind or a multiplatform career (columnist, book author, blogger, media personality)is on the take until proven otherwise. It'll save valuable time as I ponder deeper questions, such as:
Are Michael Fumento and John Stossel the same dude? They share the same mustache, and their minds couldn't be more alike.
And isn't it interesting how mousily quiet Pajamas Media has been about this latest blow to its nonexistent credibility? Nor has Little Green Snotballs (no link) added an update to its Fumento citing, apprising them of recent developments. I guess they want to keep their readers in the dark, since so many of them are cellar-dwellers anyway, and have grown comfortable with the dark.

And so we bid unfond adieu to Atlas Shrugs, her blogsite the source of so much amusement over the past weeks, now a toxic pit, dry and cracked. It would have been fun to keep the little feud going, in the spirit of Jack Benny-Fred Allen, but I now realize that I'm dealing with a humorless shrew whose mind isn't properly proportioned and hickory-smoked with maturity. This is the last I shall write of Lady Atlas, leaving her to languish in the obscurity in which I discovered her. Deprived of the attention she craves and the traffic I sent, she faces a future of irreversible diminishment until only a noisy dot will remain. I could have made her a star, but now she'll be reduced to playing custom auto shows and competing with Edy Williams on the red carpet. It's sad it had to come to this, but I have fancier fish to fry, and it's time to toss her back into eternal sea that swallows all.
What prompts my decision is her most recent screed directed my way, such a coarse exhibition that I leave it to you to lift the sewer lid and find it on your own. I've come round to Steve Gilliard's policy of not linking to the loony fringe. Suffice to say that she refers to me as "Wolcunt," swell language for someone who espouses a "family ethic," calls me an old queen, and spews similar insults that, as Bertie Wooster said in a quite different context, verge upon the personal.
I was in London years ago when Elton John won a libel suit against a British tabloid that had accused him of all kinds of licentious excess. However, when Miss Atlas Shrugs repeatedly, promiscuously, and recklessly smears me as a "Jew hater," in boldface no less, she is trespassing beyond the boundaries of the permissible, spouting malicious trash. Unlike Sir Elton, I am not litigious, but malignant, baseless smears carry karmic consequences, and tarring me as a "Jew hater" is not a smart path or prudent course to take, it is extremely ill-advised, she would be wise to desist and back her scooter out of that particular gutter.
I will clear up one confusion for her. She wonders at the top of her lungs why I threw in a mention of AIPAC into my post about her thumb being at halfmast, a mention that she finds sinister evidence of anti-Semitism.
Allow me to elucidate. In post after post, she hails and virtually hugs UN ambassador John Bolton as her titan hero, her kinda man. John Bolton is a featured speaker at this year's AIPAC conference, which for her is like having Sinatra play Caesars, only without funnyman Charlie Callas as opening act. Hence her thumb--at half-mast over Tom DeLay--going fully erect with excitement. I recognize that such an associative leap is too subtle for a PJ blogger to take in without outside assistance, and it's futile trying to provide clarification to the militantly clueless. So let us wave a last goodbye to Atlas Shrugs and speak of her no more as we enjoy the sumptuous quiet her absence bequeathes.

When you click on humdinger (uh why not thumbdinger?) in that link it take you to AIPAC. Why? The piece was about DeLay, what does AIPAC or Israel or the Jews have to do with that? Woolrunt can not contain his anti-semitism. Jew hater. His vitriolic rantings against Charles (and LGF readers mind you) are clearing an extension of his Jew hatred. While Charles is not Jewish, his is the closest thing to a "Righteous Gentile" as I have ever encountered.
