A 12-year-old black boy was severely injured in a racial attack by five neo-Nazi youths in the East German village of Poemmelte, the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper said Thursday. The unidentified victim, a German national of Ethiopian origin, suffered head and facial injuries in the assault on Tuesday and was transferred to a local hospital. Police detained the five neo-Nazi thugs - aged between 14 and 19 who badly beat up and humiliated the victim. A newly-resurgent and violent neo-Nazi movement is especially strong in the Eastern Germany where foreigners are scapegoated for the worsening economic situation and high unemployment rate. Racially-motivated assaults on foreigners continue to plague the formerly communist East Germany.

Anti-Semitism never grows old!

A reader points out to me that I promised to do a follow-up on an item from about a month ago on a weird situation down in Florida. Seems a prominent merchant in Delray Beach named Alex Seredin has been spewing obscene anti-Semitic hate in Usenet newsgroups for years -- to the utter indifference of the local community where this jackass does business, even getting some favorable publicity in a dimwitted local newspaper.

Seredin runs a souvenir shop on North Federal Highway (the old U.S. 1, ironically) called Peter Pan Gifts. Kind of makes sense, doesn't it? Anti-Semitism never grows old.

Seredin practices virulent anti-Semitism of the old-fashioned variety known and loved by generations past, commonly referring to Jews as "kikes" and "long noses." He recently opined that Jews "have no right to a country except six feet under," and recommended that "Palestinians expel all the bloody kikes." He posts his nauseating hate in Jewish newsgroups, effectively turning them into anti-Semitic podiums.

Oh, you don't believe me? OK, I'll turn over the microphone to the Plastic Flamingo King of Delray Beach for a moment. Here is the full text of a Jan. 10 post:

So, as requested, here's my follow-up to this idiot's public ravings: Nothing. The silence continues in Florida.

Where is the outrage? Where is the media coverage -- particularly in the goofy Tribune Company-owned publication, City Link, that gave his schlock store free publicity? Why aren't outraged citizens -- Jewish and non-Jewish -- passing out handbills and telling visitors to Delray Beach about his nutty ravings?

Kind of makes you wonder whether there'd be the same indifference to a bigot spewing anti-black or even anti-Islamic hysteria. The media coverage would be so thick you could cut it with a knife. Instead, a neo-Nazi nut with a garbage mouth spews hate on the Internet and nobody gives a damn.

Hey, America is the land of the free, and this moron has a right to be a moron. But apparently, in South Florida, we are the "home of the wimps" when it comes to telling bigots to take a hike. Or at least we are when their targets are Jews.

After the attack in Moscow Synagogue in Bolshaya Bronnaya Street, Moscow prosecution and police have decided to strengthen guarding of another synagogue, in Maryina Roshcha. The Russian Federation of Jewish Communities has also decided to strengthen security measures in all synagogues in Russia.

A source in the investigation group said, the attacker, Alexander Koptsev, will be subjected to psychiatric examination, reports RSN.

In the evening of January 11, the 20-year-old Muscovite entered the Synagogue in Bolshaya Bronnaya Street and started thrusting a knife into people who were praying inside. Eight people were wounded. The attacker was also wounded and brought to hospital. He was hurt when the Synagogue's Rabbi and his son-in-law tried to neutralize him.

According to Moscow Prosecutor Anatoly Zuyev, the attack was caused by national and religious intolerance. As Kommersant daily reports, the attacker's parents told he was a mentally and physically ill, a homebody, and was far from politics and religion. According to his father, his 20-year-old jobless son was at home carried away by a computer game, where a postman suddenly goes mad and goes to London streets with a knife and starts killing people. According to the parents, their son was reserved and had few friends. "He was not taken to the army, because one of his eyes is bad, besides, last year he had a psychological trauma after his sister died," Kommersant quotes the attacker's father as saying.

Rao officially speaks out on neo-Nazis

University President Michael Rao [right] sent a letter to the CMU community Thursday explaining why Central opposes the hate-related group that considered forming here last semester. The mass e-mail - sent to students, faculty and staff - was ready for release in early December after rumors surfaced about a possible neo-Nazi group coming to campus. After talking with students, however, Dean of Students Bruce Roscoe said he felt releasing CMU's position in January would be more effective because students would not be distracted by exams. "The president wanted to time it appropriately so students would have time to attend to it," Roscoe said. Director of Student Life Tony Voisin said it was important for Rao to sort out all the information required to make a statement. "It is not about the timing, but the message," he said.

The letter, which is the first time Rao has addressed the issue, came days before the campus celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Week, which begins Monday. Rich Morrison, associate vice president of Public Relations and Marketing, said the timing of the e-mail works well with MLK Week, but it "wasn't the specific reason to hold (the letter)." Rao wrote in the letter about how the university's values promote safety on campus. He said he supports free speech, but he also supports the right to disagree.

"I disagree and disapprove of views that assert that one group is superior to another or views that assert that members of a group should be treated in an offensive or degrading manner based on their identity," Rao wrote. "Any statement intended to induce fear or anxiety in others is inappropriate." He also praised students who spoke out against the possibility of a hate-related group at CMU. Morrison said many from the CMU community already have responded to the letter. By next week the responses will be compiled and a summary will be made available to the university. Here.

Ferrell goes from George Bush to neo-Nazi

NEW YORK - Will Ferrell has played plenty of controversial characters in the past decade, but never a neo-Nazi. The American bared his buttocks in the comedy Old School. He played a sexist television newsreader in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and a dim-witted, oversized Christmas elf in Elf. During his career-making stint on American television's landmark comedy skit show, Saturday Night Live, between 1995 and 2002, Ferrell portrayed plenty of zany characters, including Craig the overenthusiastic male cheerleader and US President George W Bush. "I once played a paraplegic astronaut who was deaf and had a lisp," Ferrell adds with a serious look on his face during a recent interview in a Manhattan hotel. There is a moment of silence before he smiles. "No, I just made that up," the 38-year-old California-native continued. "This might be the riskiest thing."

The "this" he refers to is Frank Liebkind, an eccentric, pigeon-loving neo-Nazi who has a central role in Mel Brooks' Tony Award and Oscar winning stage musical-comedy and movie, The Producers. Ferrell and another Hollywood star, Uma Thurman, were the two outsiders on Brooks' new updated movie version of The Producers, with co-stars Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Roger Bart and Gary Beach together for more than 300 performances on Broadway. "They beat me," Ferrell again deadpans to a question about how his cast mates treated him on the movie set. "They locked me out of my dressing room." Ferrell, amused by his own wit, once again waits for the laughs to give an honest answer. "What was fun about this was everyone in the cast were literally the nicest people," he said. "I didn't know what to expect. "Would there be an amount of animosity because I was in a role an actor from Broadway could easily do? "I was very conscious of that. "But they were extremely nice."

Ferrell, so sensitive to playing Liebkind, wrote a letter to Oscar Gold, the actor who portrayed the neo-Nazi on Broadway with Lane, Broderick & Co during the show's Tony Award and box office record run in 2001 and 2002. Ferrell had actually watched The Producers on Broadway before he was offered the film role and was impressed with Gold's performance. "I wrote him a letter apologising for accepting the role of Franz," Ferrell recalled. "I just said 'I hope I can do it half as well as when I saw you do it, but I'm sorry I couldn't resist. I had to take it. Accept my apologies'." Did Gold reply to his letter? "No," Ferrell laughed. "I guess I know what that means."

In The Producers, Liebkind becomes a central figure in a plot hatched by Broadway producer Max Bialystock (played by Lane) and baby-faced accountant Leo Bloom (Broderick) to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from investors in a stage show. The plan involves finding "the worst play ever written" to ensure it is so bad the show closes after its opening night. Bialystock and Bloom plan to raise far more money than needed and after the musical abruptly closes, escape to Brazil with the leftover loot. After searching through piles of plays they come across Liebkind's, a Nazi-themed musical called Springtime for Hitler, that appears to be so bad and controversial, the opening night audience would not stomach it. "I never thought I'd be playing a neo-Nazi," Ferrell laughs once again. "It was never a goal of mine."

Ferrell was not a fan of musicals and thought Brooks would go with Gold, but was shocked when offered the role. "I asked my agent if they called the right number," he said. Pulling off a German accent was the easy part. What worried Ferrell the most was singing and dancing with his celebrated co-stars in a production that when it was first made in 1968 won a screenplay Oscar for Brooks and a record 12 Tony Awards in 2001. "The accent was probably the easiest part," Ferrell said. "It was something I could play around with and it didn't have to be perfect and could be humorous. "In terms of the singing and dancing, it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. "To fit in with a cast that knows the show inside and out, they are really a well-oiled machine, it was a lot harder than what I thought." Here.

MOSCOW, Russia - Jewish leaders have blamed Russian authorities, law enforcement agencies and societal atittudes for the stabbing attack this week at a Moscow synagogue, saying that the authorities have not responded properly to previous anti-Semitic and hate incidents. "The entire world has seen what the lack of fight against fascism leads to today," the Federation of Jewish Communities, Russia's largest Jewish group, said in a statement Thursday. Berel Lazar, one of Russia's chief rabbis and a federation leader, demanded that Russian authorities react promptly to Wednesday's incident. "We won't be silent," Lazar told a news conference in Moscow on Thursday. "We are expecting that the state organs, law-enforcement agencies will take real measures so that" these types of incidents will not occur again. The federation also said the attack was a direct consequence of earlier manifestations of anti-Semitism that Russian authorities left almost unnoticed. In particular, the group cited an infamous letter signed by some Russian lawmakers and public figures that in early 2005 called for a ban of Jewish organizations in Russia.

Some Russians seem to share this view; 81 percent of 3,992 callers to a popular Moscow radio station said this week's attack was a sign of rising xenophobia and extremism in Russia. Many groups are also looking into increased security. The Israeli Embassy is pressing Russia's Foreign Ministry to install more security at Jewish institutions in the country. "Events in Moscow have aroused grave concerns," said the embassy's press secretary Mikhail Brodsky.

The incident took place just before the evening service, when the Bolshaya Bronnaya Synagogue in downtown Moscow was full of worshippers. The man, identified by police as Alexander Koptsev, 20, struck out at random before being pushed to the ground by Yitzhak Kogan, the shul's rabbi, and Kogan's son. The attacker, with self-inflicted injuries, was checked into the same Moscow hospital as most of his victims. Police said the man will be arrested once his condition allows it. All of his victims were in stable condition as of Thursday afternoon, and three had been released from the hospital. The injuries ranged from light to medium, but none was life-threatening, medical sources said, despite initial reports to the contrary. Among those wounded were Russians, several Israelis, an American - Kogan's son-in-law, Michoel Mishulovin - and a rabbinical student from Tajikistan.

Witnesses said the attacker shouted, "I came to kill you," and looked like a skinhead, but a source with the Moscow police told news agencies that the attacker is not a known member of any known neo-Nazi groups. Some sources have indicated the young man may suffer from a mental disorder. Investigators classified the attack as attempted murder and "inflicting injuries out of ethnic or religious hatred," which in Russia carry a maximum punishment of 12 years in prison. The shul is one of the oldest in Moscow and serves as the base of the Agudas Chasidei Chabad in Russia, a Lubavitch organization.

North American Jewish groups expressed outrage over the incident. NCSJ, a group that monitors Jewish life in the region, "condemns the attack and calls for greater vigilance of religious sites," Mark Levin, the group's executive director, said in a statement. The FJC leadership called on the authorities to take tough measures against the existing neo-Nazi youth groups and against the publishers and distributors of anti-Semitic books that can be easily bought in public places in most of Russian cities. [Jews believe it should be illegal to describe jewish behavior. Any event will be used to further their anti-free-speech agenda.] Lazar said that even if it was the case, the rampage was a direct result of the atmosphere in a Russian society that easily tolerates xenophobia. In the meantime, the federation said it has beefed up the security measures in all its synagogues across the country. Russian synagogues usually hire private companies to provide security.

Another Russian Jewish umbrella group, the Congress of Jewish Religious Communities and Organizations, known as KEROOR, said it would call on its local constituents later this month in an attempt to raise funds to improve security measures at provincial synagogues and Jewish institutions. "We cannot put security guards next to every Jewish grave or every single Jew," said Vladimir Pliss, a spokesman for KEROOR. "We should appeal to the authorities for protection. But in the end we should definitely take care of ourselves; no one will help us on that."

Former staff for the London association deny the financial problems that cost their jobs.

A taxpayer-funded London hate group that was supposed to inspire others in Canada to fight hatred in the classrooms, meeting rooms, courtrooms and on the streets has fallen on hard times. The entire staff of the London Association for the Elimination of Hate, including its founding executive director, is out of work. A new chairperson has taken over the board. City funding, about $63,000 this year, continues while volunteers staff the phones. But about $160,000 in funding from other levels of government is on hold until the association's affairs are in order. The association's website is down.

"They (the board) have taken three years of incredibly hard work and played havoc with it," former executive director Debbie Lee said yesterday. "It was pretty devastating for me and my staff." The layoffs of Lee and three other employees stem from questions over finances and the way the three-year-old association is run. "We had a bit of a crisis at the end of October, a deficit of $16,000," said Harold Koehler, the board's treasurer. "The immediate answer was to lay off the staff."

Lee disagreed. "That's ridiculous. There was no deficit." Both sides in the dispute hinted at personnel issues without elaborating. "I think non-for-profit organizations always have trouble with boards," Lee said. "Some board members know the work and some don't. They are making decisions blindfolded," Lee said. All sides agreed, however, the association's troubles will comfort the city's white supremacy movement and hurt efforts to promote tolerance in an increasingly multicultural London. "It is certainly going to make the white supremacist groups very happy," Lee said.

Anti-hate crusader Richard Warman said a strong anti-hate association is key in London. "There doesn't seem to be much political will to take the issue seriously, despite the fact London has one of the worst, if not the worst, problem with white supremacy and neo-Nazi organization in Canada," said Warman, an Ottawa lawyer who fights Internet hate propaganda. The association is like a "canary in a coal mine," warning Londoners of the problem, he added.

The association is the first of its kind in Canada, said new chairperson Laila Norman. "It is important to be a complete success. We want to set up a template for the rest of the country." In the wake of rumours during Christmas the association was shutting its doors, the board decided Wednesday to continue operating the association.

The association first opened its doors in September 2002. The association has worked with regional school boards to teach students about tolerance, and sponsors a summer camp for teachers about the Holocaust and human rights. It supports gay pride events, the city's multicultural groups and individuals facing racism. The association has also urged London police to lay hate crime charges against a white supremacist. Former federal Green party candidate Rebecca Bromwich took over as board chairperson last January, but resigned a few months later for personal reasons. Founding board member Pamela Coray took over on an interim basis. She found the finances confusing. "I couldn't connect the dots to see where one set of grants ended and the others started. We had to let staff go." But Lee said there was $160,000 in municipal, provincial and federal grants about to kick in. That money won't come until the board completes several financial reports, Koehler said. Russian prosecutors said Friday a young man accused of attacking worshippers at a Moscow synagogue has been charged with racially motivated attempted murder, assault and actions aimed at humiliating national or religious groups. The Moscow prosecutors' office said Alexander Koptsev, 20, had said during interrogation that he had committed the crime "out of envy toward them, since they live better," and that he had been inspired by books and Internet sites. He also told investigators that one of his motivations was "my desire to die," it said. Koptsev told police investigators: "Russia has foreign intruders: Blacks, Chinese, and Jews." He said he "couldn't deal with the situation, but I tried to bring the public's attention to the problem with this attack." He added that "he did the right thing, and prepared for his act."

Koptsev said he also wanted to attack a mosque. He said he hated people from the Caucus region and was ready to carry out an attack on a mosque, but was deterred because he thought he could not harm enough Muslim worshippers, since they carry cold weapons, and would have resisted immediately. Koptsev added he chose to target a synagogue because he thought it was less well guarded.. He said he planned to commit suicide after the attack, but Jewish worshippers in the synagogue tackled him to the floor. Proof of his suicidal plan may be found in a cut he inflicted om himself. Koptsev denied being a member of a neo-Nazi group, but was sympathetic towards them. Koptsev said in televised comments that he was retracting a statement he made in custody, but he appeared to be referring to an earlier statement - not the one made public by prosecutors. "After I was detained, I made statements. I retract them," he said from behind the bars of a courtroom cage in televised footage, his hair very short and his face marked with cuts and bruises. "The next day, an investigator came. I had myself more or less under control, and I made a normal statement."

Release request rejected

The Moscow prosecutors' office could not be reached for comment, but its news release said Koptsev's statements about his motives came in the presence of a lawyer. In Friday's hearing, a judge ordered that Koptsev be held in custody, rejecting a defense request that he be released provided he sign a pledge not to leave Moscow. Koptsev stabbed and wounded eight men at a central Moscow synagogue on Wednesday evening.

A million Jews live in Russia, according to the Federation of Jewish Communities, and the Jewish community now is experiencing a revival after a wave of emigration to Israel and other countries.

Russia's rising racism

Rising xenophobia in recent years has seen hundreds of racially motivated attacks on targets including dark-skinned immigrants from former Soviet Central Asia and the Caucasus Mountains region. Rights activists say hate groups are emboldened by authorities' mild approach to prosecuting hate crimes and complain that literature from Nazis and other extremists is sold freely. In the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, an intoxicated young man shouting anti-Semitic slogans was detained as he tried to enter a synagogue Friday and was jailed for five days for hooliganism, regional police spokesman Sergei Sidorov said. He denied a report that the man threatened people with the neck of a broken bottle.

The lower house of parliament's legislative committee has prepared a package of bills to strengthen anti-extremist legislation, committee head Pavel Krasheninnikov said Friday, according to the Interfax news agency. Jewish leaders, however, have demanded that authorities push for better enforcement of existing laws. U.S. Ambassador William Burns visited the synagogue on Friday morning. "The United States welcomes Russian government statements condemning the attack and Prosecutor General (Vladimir) Ustinov's intent to oversee personally the criminal case," Burns said in a statement at the synagogue. "We urge the Russian authorities to use all legal means to prosecute the perpetrator of this crime, and stop any such attacks in the future. MOSCOW - Pogroms and purges of Jews are a thing of the past in Russia, but the bloodstains on the floor of Moscow's Chabad Bronnaya synagogue last week were a reminder that anti-Semitism is very much alive. In the aftermath of an attack Wednesday in which a knife-wielding man shouting, "I will kill Jews" slashed eight worshipers, Jewish leaders warned that official indifference is fueling a wave of hate attacks. The leaders called for a crackdown on aggressive nationalist and fascist groups that have mushroomed in recent years. "We do not feel that Jews have it worse in Russia than other people, we are living comfortably here but the country is suffering and we are suffering with it," Russia's Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar said. "The inadequate nature of the police's actions against these groups is clear ... they must not be ignored anymore," he added.

The Moscow Bureau of Human Rights estimates that Russia is home to some 50,000 skinheads and numerous neo-Nazi organizations. Rights activists say such groups are emboldened by mild prosecution of hate crimes, and they complain that Nazi and other extremist literature is sold freely. The suspect in Wednesday's attack, identified as Alexander Koptsev, 20, was reading a book about Jews betraying Russia shortly before the assault, his father said. Among the eight men Koptsev wounded before a rabbi's son wrestled him to the ground were an American, an Israeli and a Tajik, officials said. Four of the victims were in serious condition. "Until yesterday, I felt completely safe, but things have gotten serious now," said Nadav Zavilinsky, a 21-year-old religious student who witnessed the bloodshed.

The Russian government condemned the attack, and Moscow police chief Vladimir Pronin promised to deploy officers to help protect synagogues. Lazar and Pronin also agreed in a meeting to set up a joint working group to monitor xenophobic propaganda and extremist groups, Lazar's office said in a statement. Last January, in what was seen as a step forward, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged anti-Semitism as a problem when he attended ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. But just before the Auschwitz commemorations, a group of nationalist Russian lawmakers called for an investigation aimed at outlawing all Jewish organizations, accusing Jews of fomenting ethnic hatred. Alla Gerber, head of the Holocaust Foundation, said anti-Semitism also persisted within law enforcement ranks despite high-level condemnation. "I was shocked at what happened [at the Moscow synagogue], but not surprised," said Gerber. "Anti-Semitism is a traditional problem in Russia, and it is flourishing now in a general climate of xenophobia." Here.

PoliticsOn December 10, 2005 the city of Toledo was shut down and freedom of speech was declared dead. This martial law was not the result of a threat of nuclear attack or terrorist "chatter" but rather a decision by the city administration, the police and the judicial system in Toledo that protecting a small group of white supremacists was worth sacrificing first amendment rights.

As a result, ANYONE - who assembled ANYWHERE IN THE CITY OF TOLEDO FOR ANY PURPOSE outside of the city sanctioned perimeter for the Neo-Nazi rally could be threatened with arrest and jail, and some people actually were arrested, as we explain below. According to Judge Thomas Osowik's ruling, this right to assemble was suspended indefinitely until the citys lawsuit was settled. And ironically, the City administration dismissed the lawsuit on Monday, December 12, two days after December 10, as it had served its illegal purpose.

Now, we in the community are facing several court battles. There are the cases of 7 young people from Chicago, including two juveniles who were arrested only for allegedly violating an unlawful, unconstitutional restraining order of which they were unaware. The fact that the city of Toledo was under martial law had not been publicized. They were jailed from Saturday until Monday afternoon without bail, and have civil and criminal charges pending against them, in spite of having committed no illegal actions.

Then there are 6 individuals from Lansing, Michigan who have a variety of "disorderly conduct" charges for such crimes as shouting profanities at the Nazis and criminal charges which stem from their presence at the actual "sanctioned" neo-nazi demonstration.

Those present at the counter-demonstration agree that they witnessed no violence or even "disorderly conduct," except by the police, whose outrageous and dangerous tactics included several unprovoked charges into the crowd by platoons of cops on horseback.

All of these people are being defended by one attorney, Terry Lodge. With no assistance from any organization (not even the state or local ACLU), Terry faces a huge task and at this point is protecting the rights of all of us single-handedly. The civil contempt charges will go to trial in a few weeks, and it is likely that there will be several jury trials on the bogus criminal charges. Such things take many hours of preparation in advance, and careful attention to detail at the actual trial. A typical criminal jury trial in Toledo Municipal Court can cost $2,500.00 to $7,500.00 in lawyer fees alone; with such a large number of defendants, the burden of defending vital free speech concerns becomes immense.

Legal fees for those of us involved in civil disobedience have never been an issue with Terry. We have paid what we could and he has been most gracious in accepting what we could pay; for many that has meant pro bono. However, with 13 defendants, most of whom are unable to pay, money is essential to cover potential fines and court costs as well as a minimal portion of Terry's hundreds of hours that will be spent in protecting the First Amendment.

The Freedoms we often take for granted: freedom of speech, association, and the right to assemble are under fire in Toledo. All of us have a stake in making sure that the reprehensible viewpoints of a distinct minority aren't allowed to be made into the excuse for shutting down the freedoms of others.

-- Judas Iscariot is headed for a makeover. According to news reports, cardinals close to the new pope recommend a change in the Catholic Church's attitude toward him: exit the treacherous Jew who turns the messiah over to the cohorts of the evil High Priest - enter the apostle who simply fulfilled his role in the divine design. After all, it was God who decided that his son should die on the cross.

A well-intentioned effort, but a pathetic one. No Vatican decision can alter the image of Judas in the New Testament: a despicable informer who received "thirty pieces of silver" for his betrayal of the Son of God. No Christian who absorbs this story in his childhood will ever forget the picture of the contemptible traitor who kisses Jesus at the moment of betraying him to his executioners. Nothing will help except changing the biblical text itself, and that is, of course, not so easy.

If one of the other 11 apostles had betrayed Jesus, the consequences would not have been, perhaps, so horrible. But since Judas sounds in many languages like "Jews", the betrayal is associated in the consciousness of Christians with Jews in general. Multitudes of Jews throughout history have been butchered because of this. The Nazi battle-cry "Judah Verrecke!" (Perish, Jews!") paved the way to the gas chambers [sic - there were no gas chambers].

Perhaps this had some influence on the young neo-Nazi, Alexander Koptsev, who ran amok this week in the Moscow synagogue, stabbing and wounding 10 people. That act lit up all the red lights. Again, "the rise of anti-Semitism in the world" became a major subject, again the alarm bells shrilled.

There is indeed a growing danger of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism - two different phenomena that can appear both together and separately. But it is not connected with primitive skinheads like the Moscow knife-wielder. It is much more dangerous, and the fuel that feeds them exists in other places and on other levels.

In one of the stream of speeches in which George W. Bush is now trying to defend his ill-fated invasion of Iraq, this week he let loose a sentence that should light all the red lights. In this sentence he castigated his opponents for asserting that he had attacked Iraq "for the oil and for Israel".

He thus brought to the surface an assertion that had until then been openly voiced only by anti-Semitic marginal groups. They have put together three facts: (a) that the people who most aggressively pushed for the war were the neocons who play a major role in the Bush administration, (b) that almost all the important members of this group are Jews, and (c) that the occupation of Iraq has freed Israel from a significant military threat.

Up to now, the American media have treated this allegation with contempt, as a ridiculous "conspiracy theory". Now that the president himself has spoken about it, it may become part of the legitimate public discourse in the United States and throughout the world.

Therein lies a great danger for Israel. The entire Israeli establishment supported the American invasion. (When we, the opponents of the war, called a demonstration against it in Tel Aviv, on the day when millions took to the streets all around the world, it was a small event, ignored by the media.)

Now it may happen, as so often in history, that those responsible for the disaster will evade responsibility. George Bush will fade from memory in a few years. What will remain is the impression that Israel and the Jews dragged the poor US into a despicable adventure.

By sheer chance, this week saw the appearance of a book about the Iraq war that touches on the same subject - State of War by James Risen. Among other things, the book says that the Secretary of Defense and the neocons who dominate Washington did not listen to the American intelligence analysts, who advised caution when it came to Iraq, but to the Israeli intelligence people who flooded Washington and briefed high-ranking officials. According to Risen, it was the hardline Israelis that Rumsfeld and his deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, were listening to, not the cautious CIA. "CIA analysts were often skeptical of Israeli intelligence reports, knowing that Mossad had very strong - even obvious - biases about the Arab world." After their visits, CIA officials would generally discount much of what the Israeli intelligence officers supplied, "Wolfowitz and other conservatives at the Pentagon became enraged by this practice," Risen writes. Wolfowitz is, of course, a very Jewish name. The obvious conclusion: it was the Israelis and their allies, the Washington Jews, who pushed the US into the war.

As if that was not enough, Washington is now rocked by a big scandal that has a close connection with Israel. At its center stands a person called Jack Abramoff - again a name that discloses the Jewish identity of its owner.

This Jack is a super-lobbyist, a symbol of the phenomenon that has turned American politics into a dirty stable of corruption, which even the mighty Hercules would have had trouble cleaning up. He skimmed the money of his clients, mostly Native Americans, put some of it into his own pocket and used the rest to bribe establishment figures, senators and congressmen. He gave them generous gifts, junkets around the world, suites in luxury hotels and other perks. Most of the beneficiaries were Republicans, but some crumbs were thrown to Democrats, too.

Up to this point, it's nothing unusual, just bigger than usual. The lobbying industry is very well developed in Washington, which is infested by lobbyists like a hobo with lice. The pro-Israeli lobby is no different from all the others.

The lobbyists corrupt everything. They bribe the politicians to make laws that will divert billions of public money into the pockets of their clients. They play a major role in financing the election campaigns of politicians, from the president himself down to the lowliest mayor. Only rarely is one of them caught and sent to prison, as may happen now to that Abramoff.

What is special about Abramoff is that he is a fanatical Zionist. According to the stories published in the States, some of the money that he diverted was transferred to extreme settlers in the West Bank. Abramoff sent them military equipment for use against the Palestinians, and perhaps against the Israeli government. Among other items, he bought them camouflage uniforms, telescopic sights for snipers, night-vision binoculars and a thermal imager.

American publications mention a settler named Shmuel Ben-Zvi from the Betar Illit settlement, a high-school buddy of Abramoff, who received this equipment. Ben-Zvi denied it, but the Senate committee has obtained e-mail messages from him lauding Abramoff for sending him "reinforcement", while Abramoff wrote him that "if only there were another dozen of you, the dirty rats would be finished". Abramoff himself claims that he is simply an idealist, who uses the money "put into his hands by God" in order to help Israel. He also financed a - probably fictitious - outfit of Syrian exiles, supported by Israel.

One of the American publications mentions in this context the biblical Mossad motto: "By way of deception thou shalt make war" (Proverbs 24,6 - that's how it sounds in modern Hebrew, but the actual meaning of the words is in doubt. The English Bible renders it thus: "For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war".) So that's how it looks to Americans: the man who has become a symbol of corruption is a Jew who supports Israel.

And as if that is not enough, either, another friend of Israel has also made waves in the American media. That's our old acquaintance Jerry Falwell, the leader of millions of American Christian fundamentalists, a friend of the late Menachem Begin.

It may be remembered that Binyamin Netanyahu, our then-prime minister, went to America in 1998 to meet president Bill Clinton. In those days Clinton was trying to exert pressure on Israel in order to promote peace. Netanyahu was invited for this purpose. On the eve of his meeting with Clinton, Netanyahu met publicly with Falwell of all people, in front of a crowd of hundreds. Falwell, a sworn enemy of Clinton, reveals now that the meeting was deliberately planned as an affront to the president.

Some days before that, another friend of Netanyahu's, William Kristol, one of the Jewish neocon powerbrokers, had publicly hinted that a huge White House sex-scandal was about to break. Immediately afterward, the Monica Lewinsky scandal was unleashed and the public was informed that the president had had sex in the White House with the young intern with the very Jewish-sounding name.

Two weeks before the Netanyahu visit, an American Jewish paper had published an ad demanding that the president abstain from pressuring Israel. The ad included a photo of Clinton taken from the back - the very shot of Clinton embracing Monica that was later published all around the world. Falwell practically brags that he helped Netanyahu to blackmail Clinton. If so, he was successful. No pressure on Israel materialized at that meeting. By the way, the magazine in which Falwell published his allegation, Vanity Fair, belongs to the publishing empire of Si [right] and Donald Newhouse, generous contributors to the pro-Israel lobby.

(Another high-profile leader of the Christian fundamentalists, Pat Robertson, declared last week that the stroke that felled Sharon was God's punishment for giving away a piece of the Holy Land to the Arabs. He later apologized, probably hoping to save an agreement that he has with the Israeli government to build a huge tourist complex near the Sea of Galilee.)

The picture that emerges for the American public is that Israel and the Jews dominate Washington and that the US government dances to their tune. That is, of course, a wild exaggeration, but many may come to believe it. That may not have any immediate influence, but constitutes a very serious long-term danger. When things repeat themselves again and again, the effect is cumulative.

Such events must serve as a warning. The Israeli government and the leaders of the US Jewish community must think again about this danger. Disapproving words about "the rise of anti-Semitism" are not enough, what is required is a profound change of behavior. We must stop all contact with crooks, especially if they are Jewish, and with fundamentalists of all sorts. Everyone who has the best interests of Israel at heart must demand that. The matter concerns the national security of Israel, especially when the policy of our government is completely based on unstinting American support.

Ariel Sharon was too overbearing to consider this danger. Let's hope that his successors will be a little more sober.

Czech man punished for neo-Nazi activities

A Czech man who yelled at protesters at an anti-Holocaust denial march was given a suspended sentence and probation. Antonin Cermak, 21, who shouted, "only, only" as the protesters cited the death of 1.7 million Jewish children at the hands of the Nazis, was given a suspended sentence of 15 months in prison with subsequent probation of three-and-a-half years. Cermak is appealing the verdict. He was part of a 70-strong neo-Nazi group that demonstrated in front of the German Embassy in Prague on Oct. 28 in support of Ernst Zundel, who is charged by German authorities with denying the Holocaust. Cermak is the first person in the Czech Republic to be prosecuted for Holocaust denial since it was made a crime there in 2001.

Holocaust supporter gets 15 months suspended sentence

Antonin Cermak, 21, was given 15 months in prison with a probation of 3.5 years for support for Holocaust today. Cermak reacted "only, only" to a Nazism opponent shouting "You have killed 1.7 million Jewish children" during a neo-Nazi demonstration in Prague last year. Cermak and the state attorney have both taken time to appeal. The demonstration of about 70 neo-Nazis took place outside the German embassy in Prague on October 28 in support of Ernst Zuendel, alleged German denier of the Holocaust. Zuendel has been accused in Germany of spreading hatred of Jews via the Internet and claiming that the Holocaust had never occurred.

Cermak called at the court today that he was reacting to a remark that concerned the number of demonstrators. According to the verdict Cermak's behaviour was confirmed by three witnesses - policemen, who stood right behind him during the demonstration. Judge Edita Beranova said that Cermak had already been prosecuted for an attack against a man and unauthorised use of a car, but on the other hand he is young and has not yet been in prison. She said however that the offence he was sentenced for today is very dangerous to society. He will now be supervised by the probation and mediation service.

In a statement released to Daily Ireland, the United States-based Klan claimed it had nothing to do with the group that has been holding regular get-togethers in Ballyclare, Ballymena, Ballymoney and Coleraine. A Klan spokesman said: "We have members in foreign countries but we do not attempt to organise in foreign lands because we are not familiar with the laws and issues which other countries may have." In a direct reference to the north Antrim gang, he added: "This office knows nothing about them." The Co Antrim group of fanatics is believed to include a number of loyalist paramilitaries. It has masqueraded under a series of different names such as the White Nationalist Party, the Third Way, and Aryan Unity.

Members have carried out leaflet drops and placed posters on street corners advocating policies such as racial segregation, the criminalisation of homosexual acts, and fighting those regarded as "commies". Those in the gang even dressed up as Klansmen in white robes with pointed masks and burned a cross on Ballymena's Clonavon Road.

North Antrim Sinn Féin assembly member Philip McGuigan said: "The activities of this far-right group in the north Antrim area are well documented. "The gang is made up of loyalists who have held meetings and who have put racist posters and flyers around towns. "It just goes to show how thuggish they are when a racist organisation like the Ku Klux Klan distances itself from them. "The public has no appetite for these people and they would do everyone a service if they disappear and take their hate-filled messages with them."

PSNI records from April 2004 to April 2005 show that 83 racial incidents occurred in the north Antrim area. This figure accounts for more than ten per cent of all racist crime in the North during that period. In total, 813 racial incidents occurred in the North during the 2004-05 financial year. In interview with BBC Radio, Britain's Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks says he is 'very scared' by rise in anti-Jewish feelings, which have led to Holocaust denial, attacks on synagogues, boycott of Jewish groups on university campuses

Britain's Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks fears that a "tsunami of anti-Semitism" is threatening to engulf Jews across the world.

"I am very scared by (it) and I'm very scared that more protests have not been delivered against it, but this (anti-Semitism) is part of the vocabulary of politics in certain parts of the world," he said.

Figures produced by the London-based Community Security Trust show that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Britain. The trust recorded 532 anti-Semitic incidents in 2004, including 83 physical assaults. In the meantime, some groups opposed to Israeli government policy have organized boycotts of Jewish academics and student groups. Since 2002, Jewish student groups on 17 British campuses have faced the threat of expulsion from fellow students opposed to Israeli action.

'Rabbis assaulted throughout Europe'

According to Sacks, attempts to "silence and even ban" Jewish student groups are "quite extraordinary" because most of Britain's 350,000 Jews regard themselves primarily as "British citizens," he said, trying hard not to laugh. Sacks also blasted the world's interference in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, claiming that "if, God forbid, one could imagine a world in which the state of Israel did not exist... then not one of the world's conflicts would be changed by one millimeter - there would still be conflict in Chechnya, in Ossetia, in Indonesia, in the Philippines." "So to make this (Israeli-Palestinian) conflict - where the two sides have worked now for 12 years in a process of peace - the epicenter of global politics is not merely wrong ... but it is also quite troubling," he charged.

Sacks said he was also worried by the strength of anti-Jewish feeling in some European states, including France. "A number of my rabbinical colleagues throughout Europe have been assaulted and attacked on the streets. We've had synagogues desecrated. We've had Jewish schools burnt to the ground - not here but in France… So it's the kind of feeling that you don't know what's going to happen next, and that is making some European Jewish communities feel uncomfortable," he said. 'Fall' dares to sympathize with misguided Nazis

Friedrich Weimer is a model young man -- handsome, hard-working, intelligent, athletic. In most coming-of-age boxing movies he'd be the Great White Hope. But in "Before the Fall" Friedrich is the blond-haired, blue-eyed Aryan model you're not allowed to cheer for. And that's what makes this film unusually compelling, even if it's treacly enough to be "The Chorus" in goose step.

"Before the Fall" takes place in 1942 Germany, where Friedrich (Max Riemelt) may be a nice enough kid, but he's also a poster boy for Adolf Hitler's master race. Directed by Dennis Gansel ("Girls on Top"), who co-wrote the screenplay with frequent collaborator Maggie Peren, the movie starts off curiously: Friedrich is defeated in the ring when he can't finish off an opponent, yet he's subsequently recruited for an elite Nazi training school known as a Napola (National Political Academy). His poor Fuhrer-bashing father rejects the Third Reich-sponsored free ride, so Friedrich forges a signature and runs off to claim his place, lured as much by the school's impressive facade as he is by naive nationalism and Olympic dreams.

From there on, it's easy to compare the Napola's assemblage of sensitive boys and cruel instructors with everything from "Dead Poets Society" to "Full Metal Jacket." Since boxing is little more than a convenient slow-motion metaphor for war in this movie ("Forget your humanity," the young pugilist's trainer instructs him ominously), most of the action happens in classrooms and military drills, and most of it is predictable. But that's what ultimately grabs you, too, because it's hard to believe that Gansel can make something both routine and perversely heroic out of young men being shaped by Nazi ideology. And he does.

Friedrich's roommates include a bed-wetter (Martin Goeres) and a world-class farter (Leon A. Kersten), and his best friend is a pacifist writer named Albrecht (Tom Schilling), whose powerful father (Justus von Dohnanyi) is made in the image of Herman Goering. The teens are all far too sensitive for the battlefront deeds they're being groomed to carry out, which should make you sympathetic, even if you can't root for them to excel in their anti-Semitic education. Just don't get too attached, because Darwinism and dramatic convention dictate that tragedy awaits the weakest of the litter.

"Before the Fall" has far too many stock characters and contrived scenes with homoerotic overtones, but it also has genuine performances, haunting photography shot on location in Prague, and a rare point of view. The young misguided Nazis are presented as mostly good, often proud, and, ultimately, victims. You don't have to agree. The best thing about Gansel's film is it doesn't ask you to absolve anyone; it only tries to make everyone a little more human.

As moral examination, 'Fall' is a knockout

Swastikas and affection for Hitler are the small differences between Dennis Gansel's "Before the Fall" and the more well-known "School Ties," but they are distinctions of a beautiful color. Here a group of boys attend a napola - a school for the Nazi leaders of tomorrow - and do their best to prove German boys don't cry.

The year is 1942, a few years before the collapse of the party. Young and innocent Friedrich (Max Riemelt) is a working-class youth. One day, while he is competing in a boxing match, a recruiter from a local institution becomes smitten with his stunning potential.

It's no wonder. Friedrich has the eyes of a blue abyss and hair as golden as the sun. An Aryan icon, he is admitted to the school and, against the wishes of his Nazi-dissenting parents, accepts the offer with hopes of a better life.

Friedrich is an idealist, and his dreams are what keep him going. This is a far cry from Albrecht (Tom Schilling), a student he quickly befriends at the academy. The young boy is weak and, although his father (Justus von Dohnanyi) is governor, he questions what he is taught more than his teachers would like.

The camaraderie of the boys is surely doomed. Friedrich is an obedient cadet who aims to please his instructors; Albrecht is quite the contrary. When the blond and sturdy boy is asked to punch his drill sergeant, he obeys the startling command. Albrecht, a revolutionary to the core, channels his aggression through poetry and passionate essays.

This comes to a head on a dark evening when the boys are suddenly awakened. Ordered to help the Fuehrer, they are sent out to fight and capture a group of escaped enemies. What they are not told sends Albrecht into a fit of rage; for Friedrich, it is questionable, but he accepts it all the same.

"Before the Fall" is a careful examination of what is right and wrong, and the power of one voice against a thousand others. The truth doesn't come easily for Friedrich, who must decide which path to take. The turmoil he fights within himself is what keeps the film alive; the beauty of the storytelling is the icing on the cake.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad [right] has shot to the forefront of Holocaust denial with his rabble-rousing remarks last month. But it's more like self-denial. The president of Iran need only look to his country's Hitler-era past to discover that Iran and Iranians were strongly connected to the Holocaust and the Hitler regime, as was the entire Islamic world under the leadership of the mufti of Jerusalem.

Iran's axis with the Third Reich began during the prewar years, when it welcomed Nazi Gestapo agents and other operatives to Tehran, allowing them to use the city as a base for Middle East agitation against the British and the region's Jews. Key among these German agents was Fritz Grobba, Berlin's envoy to the Middle East, who was often called "the German Lawrence," because he promised a Pan-Islamic state stretching from Casablanca to Tehran. Relations between Berlin and Tehran were strong from the moment Hitler came to power in 1933. At that time, Reza Shah Pahlavi's nation was known as Persia. The shah became a stalwart admirer of Hitler, Nazism and the concept of the Aryan master race. He also sought the Reich's help in reducing British petro-political domination.

So intense was the shah's identification with the Third Reich that in 1935 he renamed his ancient country "Iran," which in Farsi means Aryan and refers to the Proto-Indo-European lineage that Nazi racial theorists and Persian ethnologists cherished. The idea for the name change was suggested by the Iranian ambassador to Germany, who came under the influence of Hitler's trusted banker, Hjalmar Schacht. From that point, all Iranians were constantly reminded that their country shared a common bond with the Nazi regime.

Shortly after World War II broke out in 1939, the Mufti of Jerusalem crafted a strategic alliance with Hitler to exchange Iraqi oil for active Arab and Islamic participation in the murder of Jews in the Mideast and Eastern Europe. This was predicated on support for a pan-Arab state and Arab control over Palestine. During the war years, Iran became a haven for Gestapo agents. It was from Iran that the seeds of the abortive 1941 pro-Nazi coup in Baghdad were planted. After Churchill's forces booted the Nazis out of Iraq in June 1941, German aircrews supporting Nazi bombers escaped across Iraq's northern border back into Iran.

Likewise, the mufti of Jerusalem was spirited across the border to Tehran, where he continued to call for the destruction of the Jews and the defeat of the British. His venomous rhetoric filled the newspapers and radio broadcasts in Tehran. The mufti was a vocal opponent of allowing Jewish refugees to be transported or ransomed into Jewish Palestine. Instead, he wanted them shipped to the gas chambers of Poland.

In the summer of 1941, the mufti, with the support of key Iranian military and government leaders, advocated implementing in Iran what had failed months earlier in Iraq. The plan once again was for a total diversion of oil from the Allies to the Nazis, in exchange for the accelerated destruction of the Jews in Eastern Europe and the Nazis' support for an Arab state. Through the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Iran had already been supplying Hitler's forces in occupied Czechoslovakia and Austria. Now, the mufti agitated to cut off the British and the Allies completely and supply Germany in its push against Russia.

In October 1941, British, USSR other allied forces invaded Iran to break up the Iran-Nazi alliance. Pro-Nazi generals and ministers were arrested, and the shah's son was installed in power. The mufti scampered into the Italian embassy, where he shaved his beard and dyed his hair. In this disguise, he was allowed to leave the country along with the rest of the Italian delegation. Once the mufti relocated permanently to Berlin, where he established his own Reich-supported "bureau," he was given airtime on Radio Berlin. From Berlin and other fascist capitals in Europe, the mufti continued to agitate for international Jewish destruction, as well as a pan-Islamic alliance with the Nazi regime.

He called upon all Muslims to "kill the Jews wherever you see them." In Tehran's marketplace, it was common to see placards that declared, "In heaven, Allah is your master. On Earth, it is Adolf Hitler." When the mufti raised three divisions of Islamic Waffen SS to undertake cruel operations in Bosnia, among the 30,000 killers were some volunteer contingents from Iran. Iranian Nazis, along with the other Muslim Waffen SS, operated under the direct supervision of Heinrich Himmler and were responsible for barbarous actions against Jews and others in Bosnia. Recruitment for the murderous "Handschar Divisions" was done openly in Iran.

Iran and its leaders were not only aware of the Holocaust, they played both sides. The country offered overland escape routes for refugee Jews fleeing Nazi persecution to Israel -- and later fleeing postwar Iraqi fascist persecution -- but only in exchange for extortionate passage fees. Thousands of Jews journeyed to Israel via Iran both during the Holocaust and during the years after the fall of Hitler, when Arab leaders, especially in Iraq, tried to continue Germany's anti-Jewish program. Iran profited handsomely.

Since the shah's downfall, Iran has become a center for organized international Holocaust denial [read: free speech criminalized by jews like Black who control the West, and ignore facts such as the Zionists worked with the Nazis too] and has helped elevate the endeavor from fringe hate speech to a state-approved pseudo-intellectual debate. [Pseudo means you don't support the jews agenda; it's a different way of saying 'discredited,' another favored jewish adjective for heretics.] In international forums and on state-controlled radio, Iranian university experts and journalists help validate the revisionist views that Jews were never gassed or murdered in great numbers during the Holocaust.

Indeed, Iran has become a refuge for the biggest names in European Holocaust denial. [talk about a buried lead! men must flee Europe for holding "wrong" opinions?! is this the dark ages?] When in 2000, revisionist author Jürgen Graf [right] was sentenced in Switzerland to 15 months in prison for Holocaust falsification, Graf fled to Tehran "at the invitation of a group of Iranian scholars and university professors who are sympathetic to Holocaust revisionism," according to the Institute for Historical Review, a denial clearinghouse. What's more, in May 2000, Iran's embassy in Vienna granted asylum to Austrian Holocaust denier Wolfgang Fröhlich, who testified as a so-called expert witness during Graf's 1998 trial. This saved Fröhlich from Austria's severe anti-Holocaust denial statutes. Fröhlich argued that evidence proved no Jews were killed by Zyklon B gassing.

Earlier, about 600 journalists and 160 members of the Iranian parliament signed petitions supporting French revisionist Roger Garaudy, who was fined $40,000 by French authorities for his book claiming the Holocaust was a myth. When Garaudy landed in Iran, the country's supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Sayyad Khamenei, granted him an audience and lauded his work. Iran has played a leading role in the Holocaust drama and now tries to deny it. That should be very hard in a nation that was named for Hitler's master race.

Black-on-black violence is an epidemic

A distinguished group of blacks will assemble in Washington, D.C., next month to put finishing touches on a blueprint for uplifting their race. Called "The Covenant with Black America," this plan is the product of a brain trust of black leaders - people committed to fixing what's broken in black America. The 254-page document, a copy of which I obtained in advance of its scheduled late February release, is an action plan to make blacks healthier, improve the education of black children, reduce blacks' high incarceration rate and help blacks acquire wealth and become economically self-sufficient.

As important as all of this is, it doesn't go far enough. Somewhere in this document, amid all the talk about what individual blacks can do to strengthen the race, there should have appeared these words: Thou shall not kill. Anyone who is serious about uplifting the black race ought to have ending the slaughter of blacks high on the list of things to do.

According to data compiled by Tuskegee Institute, 3,445 blacks were lynched in this country between 1882 and 1968. As horrific as that Jim Crow "justice" was, it pales compared with the black-on-black carnage now taking place. Of the 15,365 blacks murdered between 2000 and 2004 whose killers are known to law enforcement officials, 14,025 of them were killed by other blacks, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report.

To put this into context, more than four times as many blacks were killed by blacks during this five-year period as died at the hands of mobs over the 86 years of recorded lynchings. If the Ku Klux Klan were responsible for this level of bloodshed, black leaders would make ending this violence one of their top priorities. If the Aryan Nation were behind this senseless slaughter, they would demand extraordinary steps to stop it. But overwhelmingly, the culprits aren't bigoted whites; they are a small group of self-loathing blacks. These people are a malignant cancer eating away at the hopes and aspirations of the blacks whose lives they affect. And that impact is widespread.

Eight of the 10 cities with the highest murder rate per 100,000 population are majority black, Morgan Quitno Press reported in its 2005 listing of the nation's most dangerous cities. In the other two, blacks and Hispanics combined make up a majority of the population.

How do you build better schools and energize economic development in cities plagued by such murder rates? How do you keep middle-class whites and blacks from fleeing to the suburbs - a loss that depletes the tax bases of these cities? How can you talk about a plan to uplift the black community and not have as one of its major components a frontal attack on the causes of the disproportionately high black murder rate? Sure, I know education and jobs are part of the answer. And I understand that drug trafficking and drug abuse have a lot to do with black-on-black murders. But behind all of these causes are people - those who have little regard for the lives of others. What do we do about them?

For many of us who have escaped the most violent black neighborhoods, the carnage that goes on in them is a distant reflection of the nation's larger failings. But for those left behind, who run the gauntlet of this violence, the need for an end to black-on-black murder is a matter of great urgency. As it should be for the well-meaning drafters of The Covenant.

ACLU steps in, and Manassas backpedals on family housing ordinance

Big Mama Manassas THE AMERICAN Civil Liberties Union seldom sits on the fence. Many people consider its positions extreme--dangerous even. But recently, in a housing case, the ACLU took on an edict that perhaps only those of the Aryan Brotherhood could love. Indeed, the ACLU spoke for the great majority of Americans who might have held their noses in a "pee-yew" expression over the Manassas City Council's discriminatory folly.

City fathers, who should not be confused with the municipality's brain trust, just last month enacted an ordinance that restricts households to immediate relatives, plus one unrelated person, and excludes aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended-family members. Let's see, who might suffer most from this ordinance? Immigrant families, perhaps? Latinos, Asians? Any family who settles in this country and shares a dwelling with its close and not-so-close kinfolk as they all try to establish themselves in an unfamiliar new world?

Might similar circumstances a century ago have faced German, Polish, and Irish families? These were the former newcomers who donated sweat and blood to the Industrial Revolution, suffered through the Great Depression, and defended America in two world wars. Would the Manassas City Council have greeted those immigrants with the words, "Bring me your tired, your poor; you just can't live under the same roof together"?

Criticism flared as word of the ordinance's passage spread and its implications became clear. But it was the ACLU's leap into the case that caused Manassas officials to suspend enforcement of the rule and begin to consider scrapping it.

Illegal-immigration issues can be addressed by the appropriate agencies and current laws. So what was Manassas' fallback rationale for its family-busting, opportunity-squashing ordinance? The city claimed a need to somehow deal with pressures on public services. But other similarly beset places in Northern Virginia manage to cope with those without a statute steeped in nativism.

The Virginia ACLU's executive director, Kent Willis, notes that the city's decision to suspend enforcement is insufficient; the only good remedy is repeal. Indeed, Manassas should get this law off its books quickly, hoping that it once again will be remembered for its role in Civil War history, rather than for warring on civil liberties. Here.

There's a good reason why the modern Minutemen - volunteers who for months have sporadically "helped" the Border Patrol stop illegal immigrants on their way into this country - studiously avoid using classic shoot-'em-up vigilante tactics. They fear that if they carried guns and circumstances somehow led them to begin using those weapons, they could lose much of what they own.

Two young Salvadoran immigrants named Edwin Mancia and Fatima Leivaÿ combined with the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center to put this fear into Minutemen organizers. On the near-freezing desert night of March 3, 2003, Mancia and Leiva were on their way to illegally join relatives already living in America. They paid smugglers for a ride from the border to the south Texas hamlet of Hebbronville, about 50 miles east of the border city of Laredo. Unarmed and left by their driver to walk around a Border Patrol checkpoint outside Hebbronville, they were spotted on a game ranch nearby. Moments later men shooting into the air surrounded them, cursing them in Spanish and shouting threats to kill them. The two were shoved around, blinded by flashlights and camera flashes, attacked by a 120-pound rottweiler and clubbed with a gun. [lies]

So far, the Minutemen have not been involved in any similar incident, and what happened after the Hebbronville incident might be one reason.

Within a day after Texas Rangers found the two Salvadorans lying beaten and helpless beside a road, local officials arrested Casey Nethercott, the burly, shaven-headed organizer of a vigilante-style group called the Arizona Guard, which owned a 70-acre spread near the Arizona-Mexico border at Douglas. Nethercott, a Southern California bounty hunter, was later convicted of a weapons violation and sentenced to five years in prison. Before turning himself in, he engaged in a shootout with FBI agents. In Texas, he was a participating member of another ad hoc border-watch group called Ranch Rescue, whose founder has called Latino immigrants "dog turds?ignorant, uneducated and desperate."

Desperate Mancia and Leiva surely were while in the hands of Ranch Rescue. But not for long afterward. Three months after the assault on the ranch, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and a Laredo lawyer sued the men involved in the assault and ranch owner Joe Sutton -who had invited Ranch Rescue onto his property. Sutton settled out of court for $100,000. But Nethercott and Ranch Rescue founder Joe Foote did not defend themselves and the Texas judge in the case entered $850,000 and $500,000 judgments against them.

Eventually, Nethercott agreed to deed his Arizona compound to the two beating victims to settle the case. It was the latest in a string of cases where the poverty law center won civil judgmentsÿ bankrupting hate organizations like the Aryan Nations and two branches of the Ku Klux Klan.

Among the bankrupted: Tom Metzger, the north San Diego County television repairman who founded and led a white supremacist group called White Aryan Resistance (WAR) until a court judgment after the Skinhead beating of an Ethiopian in Portland, Ore., cost him his house and all his money.

The south Texas case led several white supremacist/border watch websites to post warnings against physical abuse of illegals. "The misadventures of Foote and Nethercott illustrate what NOT to do in running a private border watch," said one website. "Don't let yahoos on your land. Don't touch the aliens?tell previously convicted felons to take a hike. It's just not worth the risk."

Which explains why, no matter how strong their feelings, the high-profile Minutemen, whose co-founder ran second in a December special election to fill an Orange County congressional seat, ban volunteers from carrying firearms. Nor do they beat anyone they catch, instead turning illegal immigrants over to the Border Patrol immediately. It may take restraint on their part to act this way, but they have seen what can happen to those who let their emotions run rampant along the border.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A man who was the self-proclaimed national director of a neo-Nazi group that canceled plans to move its headquarters to the area last year is now manager of a plant where 80 percent of the employees, including his immediate supervisor, are black. Officials of the Gasket Engineering Co. learned about Charles J. Juba's background last year but decided to keep him on the payroll because his supervisor considered him an exemplary employee.

Ten months ago, Juba announced that a faction of the Aryan Nations, a virulently racist and anti-Semitic group of which he said he was the leader, was moving its headquarters from Pennsylvania to Kansas City, Kan. Juba, 34, had moved there from Leola, Pa., about a year ago, shortly after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The outcry that developed locally after publicity about the planned move led Juba to quit the group, which calls Jews "the children of Satan" and blacks "beasts of the field." His successor then announced the Aryan Nations would move instead to Sebring, Fla. But Juba stuck around, going to work for Gasket Engineering, a 63-year-old die cutting business. He had been hired as a temporary worker about the time that news broke of his plans to move the Aryan Nations to town. He hasn't changed his views on Jews and race. Company owners said they left it up to his supervisor, Earnest Jackson, a gay black man, to determine what to do. "Our sense at the time was, 'Ernie if you're comfortable with him, we'll support you and, if not, we'll get rid of him,'" one of the owners, David McLerran, told The Kansas City Star. "Ernie just raves about him."

Some of the 87 employees are upset that a man who didn't appear to have any managerial experience was hired and quickly promoted to plant manager. None could point to any racist conduct by Juba at work, but many told The Star his mere presence was an affront to their sensibilities. "People complained to Ernie," said Del Chaun, a press machine operator. "I knew what was on the Internet. Ernie asked me if he did anything to me. He said Juba had brought all that stuff to his attention when they hired him. He said they looked at his Web site and came to the conclusion that he wanted to change." In a brief interview with The Star at Jackson's office, Juba called Jews the "spawn of Satan" and said he didn't believe that races should mix. "My opinions are my own," he said. "I think I'm entitled to them. I never let them affect my work in the past, and I won't now." He said he is no longer affiliated with Aryan Nations, but when asked if he still subscribed to its beliefs, he responded: "I have beliefs that are my own that some might not agree with."

Jackson, director of manufacturing and scheduling, said he made Juba plant manager only after he proved his abilities. "His past is his past," Jackson said. "He was hired to do a job at Gasket Engineering, and he's done it. He hasn't brought his past here, and it's totally irrelevant. As long as he did the job here, that's all I needed." "If he hated black people so much, could he possibly work with this many black people and with me as his boss?" Jackson asked. Juba said he and Jackson have "an excellent working relationship and we actually get along on a personal level." Here.

Film recalls the basketball game that changed U.S.

For the record

* "Glory Road" fudges some facts, as sports fans will undoubtedly be told repeatedly in the coming weeks.

* The most obvious diversion from reality is that Don Haskins was in his sixth year as coach, not his first, when his team won the national championship.

* An even more pertinent truth is that Texas Western's allegedly toothless administration had, in fact, made an effort to integrate the team. It was one of the first Southern colleges to do so.

* There were three black starters when Haskins arrived at the school. (The film shows there were none.)

There is, to be certain, irony in how the makers of "Glory Road" have taken one of the most innovative and controversial advancements in sports history -- the first time five African Americans started together in big-time college basketball -- and made it into a movie as formulaic as a community college coach's playbook.

Yet irony and cynicism could almost be considered technical fouls in this drama, which explores the way social change was affected not in a court of law or the court of public opinion but on a basketball court.

Dramatically, "Glory Road" is yet another descendant of "Hoosiers," which remains the best, most heartfelt movie about the ways teamwork builds character and scores points. It also owes no small debt to "Remember the Titans," no surprise because both "Hoosiers" and "Titans," like "Glory Road," were produced by Jerry Bruckheimer [right].

"Glory Road" tells the story, with a minimum of fictional embellishments, of the remarkable 1966 season of Texas Western, the school that has since morphed into the University of Texas El Paso. Texas Western was an NCAA Division I team that had never really competed with its conference rivals until the hiring of the untested Don Haskins as coach, a decision that had ramifications the school administration never imagined.

Winning lineup

As "Glory Road," and legend, have it, Haskins, convincingly played by Josh Lucas, was coaching high school ball when he was offered the head coaching job at Texas Western, primarily because he came cheap and because he agreed to live with his wife, Mary (an underused Emily Deschanel), in an athletes dorm in dire need of supervision.

In this telling, the school's president is so unconcerned with the basketball program that he provides Haskins with no recruiting budget, which means that he and his inexperienced assistants are reduced to finding players who are headed for community colleges or who are playing on inner-city courts -- which translates to black. James Gartner, who has directed commercials but never a feature film, has assembled an engaging cast of recruits as attractive as the ones who suited up for "Titans." Mehcad Brooks is forward Harry Flournoy, whose eligibility is threatened by his academic performance until his formidable mama lays down the law. Sam Jones III is Willie Worsley, who makes up for what he lacks in height with effort. Austin Nichols is the white kid whose attitude issues are only intensified by the suspicions of his teammates. Damaine Radcliff is Willie Cager, who hides his heart problems, and Derek Luke ("Antwone Fisher") is team troublemaker Bobby Joe Hill, a Detroit hotshot whose lack of concern for the rules and his street style put him at loggerheads with Haskins.

A film like "Glory Road" requires adversaries to personify the prejudiced and the traditionalists. Writers Chris Cleveland and Bettina Gilois find the former in the school's alumni boosters and money pockets and the latter in University of Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp, played by Jon Voight with superior aloofness and a Silly Putty nose. To the writer's credit, he is not reduced to Aryan caricature, though he did, of course, famously avoid recruiting black players -- as did many big-school coaches of the era.

An exciting finish

Aside from its obvious if not offensively overbearing social message, it could be that the primary achievement of "Glory Road" is in making the big game dramatic, even though its outcome is never in doubt. The movie smartly employs the preceding playoff game, which was contested, to provide some drama. All involved with the project play the game with enthusiasm and purpose, which is all we really require from a committed team and an affirmative movie like this one.

For best results, fight hate with a dose of kindness

Our next-door neighbor ran toward the car as I pulled into the driveway of our home a few miles from the state capitol. Ashen-faced and clearly alarmed, she demanded to know what I planned to do about the Aryan nation flag now displayed from the front porch of another house within view of our homes. Recently, a pregnant young woman and several young men with shaven heads had moved in.

I confess that, until that time, I would not have been able to pick this flag out of a lineup. But I understood the symbolism enough to know that it stood for realities that I, as a Christ-follower, consider evil: white supremacy and hate. What I knew on an intellectual level, my Jewish neighbor knew with every fiber of her being. Quickly, I learned that neighbors up and down the block were coming to consensus about what they planned to do. General themes of discussion were retaliation and exclusion. The momentum was escalating toward some action to let the new neighbors know that they and their flag were categorically unwelcome on our normally peaceful block.

An immediate conversation with the commonwealth's Human Relations Commission staff granted perspective. In America, people are free to fly whatever flags they choose. The best response in the face of hate is not retribution but a rising up of people to proclaim that, with all of our human diversity, we are united. It sounded biblical to me. What an awesome opportunity it was for people of faith to take the lead.

A tense couple days of conversations on porches and in living rooms culminated in a neighborhood meeting in the social room of our church. Hate groups typically seek headlines, and someone on "their" side made sure that the media had latched on to the unfolding drama by this time. The 6 o'clock news heralded the upcoming "showdown on Sixth Street!" As tense neighbors gathered, the 11 o'clock news anchorman stalked, smelling a lead story. Neighbors filed in, nervously chatted, took their seats and watched in shock and amazement as the troupe of teenage skinheads entered the church, complying with a gentle request to leave their banner at the door. We were not prepared for this. Never, the Human Relations Commission told us, would a hate group show up at a community meeting like this. But there they were: five teenage skinheads and the pregnant young woman.

The rest was a blur with a couple moments of clarity. I remember walking toward our unexpected guests, extending my hand in welcome to each one. Someone else offered refreshments and seats. A woman engaged the pregnant girl in conversation about her expected baby. We thanked the flag-toting neighbors for coming. In that moment, something happened that I can only explain as a "God" thing. Tension eased. Palpable evil left the room The meeting commenced and neighbors agreed that everyone had a place in this community, and that there would be no tolerance of hateful expression on anyone's part. As the meeting disbanded, the reporter tried in vain to create a story that would live up to its billing. There was no shootout, no standoff, no showdown. The flag disappeared.

Three years or so later, in another community, I again met with residents around issues of proactive approaches to organized hate. My friend from the Human Relations Commission was present, and we exchanged recollections of the earlier experience. She asked if I remembered the pregnant young woman. I did. "You'd like to know that this woman now works for the commission," my friend said. "She speaks to young people about resisting evil and hate. Something changed her life at that meeting on Sixth Street."

That "something" was the way of Jesus lived out by folks who, while shaking in their shoes, dared to live out the difficult truth. St. Paul said it this way in Romans 12: "If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all ... if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." For Sojourner Truth, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu, Thurgood Marshall, Mahatma Gandhi, the folks who lived on Sixth Street and all who have ever dared to live in ways that resist evil, injustice and oppression: Thanks be to God.

Police Believe Hate Group Vandalized Churches

(AP) ROCKVILLE, Md. A series of racist graffiti on churches and schools in Montgomery County has officials and residents alarmed. The graffiti comes just days before Marin Luther King Day. Police Chief Tom Manger says the graffiti discovered Tuesday at Ridgeview Middle School and Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg included the initials "W-A-R." Police believe that stands for White Aryan Resistance, a California-based group.

Saint Mark's United Methodist Church in Boyds and the Seneca Community Church in Germantown, both with predominantly black congregations, and the historic Boyds Negro School were also vandalized. "[I'm] disgusted. I mean it's hard to explain because you have mixed emotions," Saint Mark's founder Betty Hawkins tells WJZ's Sharon Lee. Religious and community leaders are especially disturbed by the timing of the graffiti as the nation prepares to honor Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday. "We will not stand idly by as some hate-mongers try to divide our community," says County Executive Doug Duncan.

Montgomery County Police warn the incidents could be more sinister than childhood pranks. Through their sadness, the congregation at St. Mark's will gather Sunday to erase the painful images from their church and at nearby Boyds Negro School. Police are offering a $4,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

The first day of the Free Speech trial got underway in Leeds with a tough talking judge warning anti BNP protestors and a tremendous show of support for the two defendants, Nick Griffin and Mark Collett.

Contrary to the lies put out by the BBC this afternoon, about 300 (double the number the BBC claimed) pro-free speech supporters from the BNP, Civil Liberty and the Christian Council of Britain held a peaceful and orderly demonstration outside Leeds Crown Court. A short prayer service was conducted by a representative of the CCoB, a newly formed association of committed Christians from all denominations and hymns were sung throughout the day.

Jurors

Inside Court Room number 8, proceedings got off to a slow start with the jury of five ladies and seven gentlemen being sworn in this afternoon and the judge, Judge Norman Jones warning jurors to approach the proceedings in a fair and unbiased way.

Demonstrating their utter contempt for the English legal system members of the ragtag Unite Against Fascism; a collection of students, full time diversity officers and trade union officials handed out leaflets to potential jurors entering the courthouse bearing the words "Guilty as charged". This appalling behaviour designed to influence jurors earned UAF a stern reprimand from Judge Jones who said that this could be seen as "an attempt to undermine the British Justice System" and urged them to stop.

A formal complaint has been lodged with West Yorkshire Police who arrested seven anti-Free Speech demonstrators for violence and public order related crimes.

BNP spokesmen gave interviews with media crews from Reuters, Sky, Channel 5 and a number of local newspapers and radio stations.

Global interest

The trial has stimulated interest way beyond immediate BNP circles and mountains of mail continues to arrive at the Treasury office and messages pour into the inboxes of the internet team from people from across the political spectrum. Serious thinkers of all political and persuasions have realised that Free Speech is on trial here and that while today it is Nick and Mark in the dock, tomorrow any other person who expresses opposition to New Labour and its attempts to enforce political correctness of an increasingly defiant British public could be similarly treated.

Subject: 'white trash' slur increasingly common in Britain

Viewers of popular soap Coronation Street had every right to be horrified by a nasty racial epithet uttered by one of the cast's Asian members.

Last night (16th) the plot was centred about the girlfriend of the Asian shopkeeper who had given birth to twins 3 or 4 days ago. She decided that she didn't want to share her life and those of her babies with this same boyfriend and instead took the babies home from hospital to live in her flat above one of his shops!

Anyway she (Sunita) was visited by her Brother (Jayeesh) who was obviously disappointed that this sister was living alone and not with the father of her twins etc and offered to take her to the family home where Mum and Dad etc would welcome such additions to the family. She replied no I have to be independent etc and he replied: "You can't live like this like some white trash" living on benefits etc.

The script writers at ITV have managed to write off every single white mother as "white trash". This is an outrageous racist attack on the many young roses who have found themselves in single parenthood, often through no fault of their own.

Whereas a decade ago very few indigenous Britons would have worried too much about this, thanks to the campaigning efforts of the British National Party and our position as first port of call for unhappy, angry and disaffected white Britons, this kind of attack, even if spoken by a fictional character in a piece of popular entertainment will not go unchallenged. Oldham BNP are busy arranging a protest outside the ITV Granada studios in Salford and we are urging all viewers who were appalled and offended by the anti-white racist comments to complain to ITV via telephone, post, email or fax.

While multi-culturalism is no laughing matter for those of the frontline the system which is falling apart on a daily basis does have its funny moments.

How about the amusing defence attempted by a chancing Indian lawyer for her Afro-Caribbean client at a Gloucester court?

Robin Sterling claimed at the trial that his use of offensive language and racist jibes was part of his Jamaican patios. Arrested after an incident in a Gloucester pub, Sterling assaulted a policeman and called him "white trash" and at the police station called a white lawyer "a white pussy".

The use of the nasty racist language itself is no laughing matter and is seriously offensive but the lawyer claimed that the use of swear words was "in place of polite addresses" and that "his language is part of a separate cultural identity and not intended to cause harm". Magistrates were unconvinced by this attempt to pull the wool over their eyes and found him guilty of two counts of racial harassment and one of assaulting a policeman. Sterling was ordered to do 240 hours of community service and to pay costs and L100 compensation to the officer.

Historical note

White trash is a term that goes back to the last 18th century and was first coined by Blacks in the southern States of the US to describe poor rural dwelling white folk.

The days of the cosy cartel where newspapers had the monopoly on delivering news are disappearing as quickly as Polish plumbers in Warsaw.

New technology, particularly the use of personal computers and the rapid adoption of the Internet has created a publishing revolution which allows anyone to set themselves up as a source of information and entertainment and to have that material published instantly and read by perhaps millions of people across the world within hours of that material being published.

Those with vested political and commercial interests in keeping things the way they were just do not like these wide sweeping changes which threaten their profits and their political agendas.

Moaner lister

So a media lovely who writes for The Guardian pens of her displeasure upon learning that the Google search tool lists news reports from the website of the BNP in its hugely popular News Section.

Julia Day opined that "One article, written by the BNP's south-east England correspondent" about the trial of six men accused of murdering 16-year-old Mary-Ann Leneghan, is the first news source listed when searching under the dead woman's name.

"The article, which accused the BBC of double standards in not reporting the colour of the defendants in the case, is listed ahead of reports from the BBC, Reuters, Channel 4, the Times and the Telegraph."

Dismissive

Notice the dismissive use of the quotes around "correspondent". Perhaps our BNP author did not have the benefit of three years pursuing a media studies course or a journalist degree course at a red-brick but he or she is indeed worthy of the title correspondent.

Such educational snobbery is typical of the effete liberal ruling class who believe that they have a monopoly on grey matter. In reality they don't and a brief glance at the list of members of the BNP's Advisory Council reminds me that not only has the BNP Chairman Nick Griffin received a degree from Downing College, Cambridge but that Lee Barnes, John Bean, Chris Beverley, Steve Blake, Mark Collett, Simon Darby, Doc Edwards, Kevin Scott, Martin Wingfield, all have university degrees. Not all Oxbridge graduates admittedly and apologies to any colleagues who I may have overlooked.

Oh dear, there is more:

"Its prime position will mean that many Google users will be directed to the BNP's website by virtue of having clicked on the first headline that is listed."

Well the scribes of the liberal-left are unhappy at this, perhaps they haven't worked out for themselves how Google works. So off Julia Day went to complain to Google themselves and received a robust reply that Google does not as a censor and only pulled links from material which was found to be illegal. Victory for common sense!

Historical changes

In the middle ages the Church had a monopoly on disseminating information and promoting a particular point of worldview. The development of the moveable type printing press created a revolution of thought and culture and the Church's monopoly was eroded as scientists, philosophers and writers of all drama, poems and literary works were able to communicate directly with a readership around the western world.

The new technology has heralded a similar cultural revolution and as such the old guard of the liberal-leftist media now face declining sales of newspapers and diminishing profits as the new technology creates serious contenders for alternative news sources. The BNP is one new kid on the block who will exploit every avenue of new technology to the maximum extent to reach more receptive minds than ever before. The times very much are a' changing! Here.

Truman St. football player involved in previous assault

KIRKSVILLE - A Truman State University football player awaiting arraignment on felony assault charges had been accused of assaulting a 21-year-old female the night before. Darnell Williams, 21 will be arraigned Jan. 23 in the Adair County Circuit Court on charges he and Joshua Kilcrease, 21, assaulted Ted Tarrant and Dan Vogt in a parking lot behind the Wooden Nickel.

However, according to police reports, Saturday's assault wasn't the first altercation of the weekend for Williams. Friday night, Williams and his girlfriend, a 21-year-old Truman St. student, where accused of assaulting another 21-year-old Truman student at a residence in the 100 block of S. Franklin St. The victim told police Williams' girlfriend approached her while waiting to use the bathroom and slapped and punched the victim in the face with an open hand. The two women "began pulling each others hair and ... Darnell Williams, then joined the fight and began assaulting the victim by pulling her hair and hitting her about the face," the police report stated. The victim then fled the scene and called police, although she reported no injuries.

After arresting Williams for Saturday night's assault, police questioned him at the station regarding Friday's incident. Williams denied assaulting the victim, but said he did separate the two women. His girlfriend later told police the victim was the aggressor in the fight and she signed a complaint against her. Both women went to the police station Dec. 13 to meet with officers and agreed to drop the complaints against each other. No charges were ever filed against Williams. Williams and Kilcrease, members of Truman's football team, were released after Judge Russell Steele reduced bond to $50,000 or 10 percent cash on the Class A felony assault charge. Here.

German rapper Fler wears finger-thick gold chains and big baggy jeans, but his rhetoric would have made Adolf Hitler proud. In his recent album, New German Wave, the blue-eyed, baby-faced rapper rhymes, "Black, red, gold, hard and proud ... believe me, my mom is German." In the accompanying video, Fler struts through Berlin, while Aryan-looking thugs wave an enormous German flag and battle with swarthy immigrants. advertisement

Meet the Fatherland's new shock troops: German rappers scaling the pop charts with violent, nationalistic lyrics and building a fan base that includes legions of neo-Nazis. Fler's album, for instance, debuted at No.5 within a week of its May release and is set to become certified gold.

The growing popularity of the genre threatens to energize a growing far-right movement here and has pushed the government to censor rap albums for their sadistic content. "[Rap lyrics] are becoming increasingly pornographic, violent, and racist," says parliamentarian Monika Griefahn. "We need to restrict it in order to protect our individual rights and our young people."

For years, German rap had been about as edgy as Neil Diamond with sweet boy-band lyrics about school and sports. A few years ago, one hip-hop group scored a hit singing about how cool their sweaters looked. But recently, German rappers like Fler, Bushido, and Sido have been emulating American gangsta-style hip-hop and writing lurid, offensive lyrics that glorify violence and crime. And in an effort to be truly provocative in a country where overt displays of nationalist fervor have long been taboo, some rappers have been openly flirting with fascism: In his recent bestselling album, Bushido rapped, "Salute, stand at attention, I'm the leader like A." That is seen as a reference to Adolf Hitler, though the rapper denies it.

To be sure, the far right will not invite the rappers to headline a rally anytime soon. Although many neo-Nazis praise the lyrics, they believe that rap strays far from the Aryan ideal because of its African-American roots. For their part, the rappers deny being extremists. "I think skinheads suck. I've gotten into fist fights with them," says Fler. "I don't want to put down other minorities. I'm just saying that I think it's cool to be German."

Dangerous words. But the music often goes well beyond simple declarations of pride--Fler advertised his new CD with a quote from Hitler: "On May 1st, we'll shoot back"--and that scares many here. "This might all be a way to sell records, but it promotes National Socialism," says antiextremist activist Jorn Menge. "Such a mix of patriotism and violence in music is very dangerous."After a recent public outcry, the government placed some of the more violent titles on a watch list. The designation requires more than an "explicit lyrics" sticker: If an album is censored, it can't be advertised or sold to anyone under 18.

The sanctions haven't had much of an impact on the music's popularity, however, especially in formerly Communist East Germany. With 30 percent unemployment and a booming crime rate, many young people in the east say that they relate to the depictions of violence and drugs. Appeals to ultra-nationalism also play well: In September's parliamentary elections, the neo-Nazi party quadrupled its support. Indeed, when Bushido gives concerts in the east, neo-Nazis ask him to sign their shaved heads.

At a recent Fler concert outside the eastern German city of Dresden, the crowd roared with approval when the young rapper stormed across the stage, wearing a camouflage jacket and a baseball cap. "He really speaks to young people,"says Stefan Sbiegay, 18. "We want to be proud to be German." Plus, Sbiegay says, "I understand what he is saying. When I listen to American rappers, I only understand half of the lyrics."

But not everyone was cheering. Klaus Grenga, 24, had never listened to Fler before the concert; a friend had brought him along. "I can't really understand the words that well," he says loudly over the thumping bass. "But the music is terrible. Give it a few years, and people will be sick of it." And by then, perhaps, people will be sick of the lyrics, too.

Re-written history raises intellectual temper in California

Silicon Valley: Controversy regarding textbooks on Indian history is raging in California with academicians alleging that changes made on the behest of Hindu organisations have resulted in hiding "true histroy". Hindu organizations -- mainly The Vedic Foundation and Hindu Education Foundation -- and individual parents persuaded the California's Board of Education (CBE) to make changes in textbooks dealing with India and Hinduism. Their suggestions were initially reviewed and approved by an 'Ad-Hoc Committee,' which included renowned Indologist Shiva Bajpai. But a final decision will be taken next month only.

California mandates the study of world religions in its public schools and every six years, state textbooks come up for review, which includes public hearings. The controversy started last year, when Jews, Hindus and Sikhs persuaded CBE to correct sixth-grade textbooks, which the groups felt contained "inaccurate" depiction of their religion and culture. However, the "ad-hoc changes" came under fire from academics, who alleged that the "approved" corrections were designed to "hide the true history of India and present a sanitized and glorified view of Indian history and culture."

One of the contentious revision is the deletion of "Aryan Invasion" requested by Hindu organisations saying that Aryans were not a race, but a term for persons of noble intellect. The academics urged that this statement not be removed. At a special meeting held by the Board of Education this month, a compromise was reached to replace the word "invasion" by "migration".

Michael Witzel, an American professor of Sanskrit at Harvard University, requested the Board of Education to reject the "Hindutva recommended" changes. Witzel wrote to the CBE President, "The proposed revisions are not of a scholarly but of a religious-political nature and are primarily promoted by Hindutva supporters and non-specialist academics writing about issues far outside their area of expertise."

About 50 international scholars specializing in Indian history and culture, including Indian historian Romilla Thapar and D.N. Jha, endorsed the letter. Among other changes recommended by the Vedic Foundation was the use of "statue" instead of "deity" for referring to the carved image of a God or Goddess, called "murthi" in Sanskrit.

Though Witzel, who was invited to the Board meeting opposed the move, the meeting decided to endorse the recommendation by Bajpai and changed "statue" to "deity".

Another decision reached was regarding Witzel's objection to suggested change that the current text "Men had many more rights than women," be replaced by "Men had different duties (dharma), as well as rights, than women." The two groups agreed to replace the sentence with "men had more property rights than women."

Meanwhile, Hindu American Foundation (HAF), which also participated in the review process, said "Hindus throughout the United States are watching this process with concern since the results have broad implications for all Hindus."

It was the Nazis who propagated the Aryan invasion theory. Although Nazis do not rule western world any more, one cannot necessarily say that about Nazi-inspired thinking. The western "scholars" have misrepresented the concept of Arayns as a race with blue eyes, blonde haired people. However, looking at the most ancient of Sanskrit scriptures (eg Rigveda) it is obvious that the address "Arya" is used to denote a person of respectability and to demonstrate affection based on respectability.

If Aryans came from central Asia to replace the "indigenous" Indians, surely worshipping cow could not have been such a long-established tradition in the north of the country. When will the ignorant and corrupt Indian historians and journalists get rid of their blinkers and call the western bluff of derisory Aryan invasion theory? When will we as self-respecting Indians start taking ownership of our own heritage and stop falling prey to the divisive and mal-intentioned designs of the pseudo-scholars of the western world?

Indian-Americans Decry Attempts by Hindu Supremacist Groups to Rewrite India's History

Palo Alto, CA, January 10, 2006 -- A coalition of American groups representing the immigrant communities from the Indian subcontinent, led by Friends of South Asia (FOSA), have taken strong exception to numerous misrepresentations of India's ancient history and of Hinduism recently put forward by the Vedic Foundation (VF) and the Hindu Education Foundation (HEF) for incorporation into Grade 6 History/Social Sciences textbooks in California.

Palo Alto, CA, January 10, 2006 -- A coalition of American groups representing the immigrant communities from the Indian subcontinent, led by Friends of South Asia (FOSA), have taken strong exception to numerous misrepresentations of India's ancient history and of Hinduism recently put forward by the Vedic Foundation (VF) and the Hindu Education Foundation (HEF) for incorporation into Grade 6 History/Social Sciences textbooks in California.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to the California State Board of Education (SBE), dated January 5, 2006, on behalf of Hindus as well as people of other faiths and beliefs who have a stake in the narrative history of the region, the coalition has urged the Board to reject the VF's/HEF's reactionary ideologies, which they say "negates great pluralism within Hindu practice, as well as the religious diversity within Indian society," and "does not represent the larger Hindu community any more than white supremacist groups like the 'Aryan Nation' [sic] represent the views of all White Americans."

"As members of the South Asian diaspora, many of us immigrants ourselves, we and our children live with the experiences of marginalization, and understand well the harm that can be caused to young minds by distortions and errors in text books regarding their religious and socio-cultural heritage. But, we are also very clear that misrepresenting Hinduism so as to 'boost the self-esteem of Hindu students' is entirely the wrong solution," the letter states.

Among the edits recently accepted by the Curriculum Commission (an advisory body to SBE) which the coalition finds objectionable:

* Recasting Hinduism as a monotheistic religion in a vain attempt to force it into a "Semitic mold," contrary to the way it has been practiced for centuries.

* Claiming that the Aryans were indigenous to India, based on questionable and fraudulent research, in an attempt to blur the distinction between Aryans and the Indus-Valley Civilization.

* White-washing the legacy of caste and gender to the point that it bears little or no resemblance to either history or to contemporary realities. The VF even claims that the caste system is a thing of the past rather than acknowledge the ongoing human rights violations against individuals of the lower castes.

* The term Dalit, which identifies 160 million Indians who were previously called 'untouchables,' has been edited out on the specious ground that the Indian Constitution guarantees right to equality.

The coalition has also forwarded to SBE a strong letter of protest addressed to the U.S. Ambassador to India, Dr. Mulford, by many notable Indians who are dismayed at the developments in California, and who wish to prevent the repetition of recent attempts in India to inject sectarian doctrines into NCERT history books. In addition, the coalition has received several letters by Dalit groups in India expressing their shock and dismay at the edits recommended by VF/HEF.

The coalition believes that both VF and HEF have strong ties to the supremacist ideologies of the Hindutva movement in India: HEF has recently admitted that it is run by HSS, the U.S. arm of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, RSS; and VF has links to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, VHP. Both RSS and VHP were largely responsible for the massive pogroms against religious minorities in the state of Gujarat in 2002 in which over 2,000 Muslims were killed and thousands made homeless. It is therefore an irony that these groups are now trying to don the mantle of minority victimhood in a multicultural U.S. society and are complaining about "discrimination against Hindus" in California.

"As a concerned Indian-American and as a Hindu, of course, I want our children to grow up with a better appreciation for other nations and other cultures," noted Raju Rajagopal, an activist from the community who works on rural development issues in India and on initiatives promoting religious tolerance. "But the pride of a small cross-section of Hindu 'creamy layers' can't be the sole basis of determining how we introduce Indian history to our future generations. In my view, scholarship must take precedence over petitions and ideologies."

"VF's/HEF's effort to meddle in California history text books is akin to recent ill-fated attempts to inject 'Intelligent Design' into the science curriculum, which has been rejected by a federal judge as 'a particular version of Christianity,' says Anu Mandavilli, who volunteers for Friends of South Asia and is a doctoral candidate at University of Southern California. "Similarly, an academically valid and constitutionally sound policy for California schools should reject the attempt to impose 'a particular version of Hinduism' upon the study of Indian history."

The Aryan Invasion Theory wrong

One of the most controversial ideas about Hindu history is the Aryan Invasion Theory. This theory, originally devised by F. Max Muller in 1848, traces the history of Hinduism to the invasion of India's indigenous people by lighter skinned Aryans around 1500 BCE. The theory was reinforced by other research over the next 120 years, and became the accepted history of Hinduism, not only in the West but in India. It even teaches that some of the most revered books of Hindu scripture are not actually Indian, and it devalues India's culture by portraying it as less ancient than it actually is.

There is now ample evidence to show that Muller, and those who followed him, were wrong. Why is the theory no longer accepted? The Aryan invasion theory was based on archaeological, linguistic and ethnological evidence. Later research has either discredited this evidence, or provided new evidence that combined with the earlier evidence makes other explanations more likely. Modern historians of the area no longer believe that such invasions had such great influence on Indian history. It's now generally accepted that Indian history shows a continuity of progress from the earliest times to today. The changes brought to India by other cultures are not denied by modern historians, but they are no longer thought to be a major ingredient in the development of Hinduism.

Dangers of the theory

The Aryan invasion theory denies the Indian origin of India's predominant culture, but gives the credit for Indian culture to invaders from elsewhere. It even teaches that some of the most revered books of Hindu scripture are not actually Indian, and it devalues India's culture by portraying it as less ancient than it actually is. The theory was not just wrong, it included unacceptably racist ideas:

* it suggested that Indian culture was not a culture in its own right, but a synthesis of elements from other cultures

* it implied that Hinduism was not an authentically Indian religion but the result of cultural imperialism

* it suggested that Indian culture was static, and only changed under outside influences

* it suggested that the dark-skinned Dravidian people of the South of India had got their faith from light-skinned Aryan invaders

* it implied that indigenous people were incapable of creatively developing their faith

* it suggested that indigenous peoples could only acquire new religious and cultural ideas from other races, by invasion or other processes

* it accepted that race was a biologically based concept (rather than, at least in part, a social construct) that provided a sensible way of ranking people in a hierarchy, which provided a partial basis for the caste system

* it provided a basis for racism in the Imperial context by suggesting that the peoples of Northern India were descended from invaders from Europe and so racially closer to the British Raj

* it gave a historical precedent to justify the role and status of the British Raj, who could argue that they were transforming India for the better in the same way that the Aryans had done thousands of years earlier

* it downgraded the intellectual status of India and its people by giving a falsely late date to elements of Indian science and culture.

Friedrich Max Müller (December 6, 1823 - October 28, 1900), more commonly known as Max Müller, was a German-born British Philologist and Orientalist, one of the founders of Indian studies, who virtually created the discipline of comparative religion. Müller wrote both scholarly and a popular works on this subject, a discipline he introduced to the British reading public, and the Sacred Books of the East, a massive, 50-volume set of English translations prepared under his direction, stands as an enduring monument to Victorian scholarship.

"If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered over the greatest problems of life, and has found solutions of some of them which well deserve the attention even of those who have studied Plato and Kant, I should point to India. A realistic scenario

The neocons have insisted for years that the first shots of what they call "World War IV" have already been fired, and we are in for a new cold war (the previous one was WWIII) that is bound to turn hot. Now Niall Ferguson, the British exponent of a new American Empire, has come up with a scenario in which he envisions how the heavy fire might begin -- one that reveals, in its fictionalization of entirely plausible events, all the assumptions and arrogance of a superpower infected with a fatal hubris.

Ferguson's future history begins as the clouds of war gather on the horizon, and premonitory flashes of lightning illuminate the troubled landscape of the Middle East:

"With every passing year after the turn of the century, the instability of the Gulf region grew. By the beginning of 2006, nearly all the combustible ingredients for a conflict -- far bigger in its scale and scope than the wars of 1991 or 2003 -- were in place."

So what caused this eruption? The word "Iraq" is not mentioned until we are well into the middle of Ferguson's fantasy, and then only to explain why Americans have gone wobbly:

"The invasion of Iraq in 2003 had been discredited by the failure to find the weapons of mass destruction Saddam Hussein had supposedly possessed and by the failure of the U.S.-led coalition to quell a bloody insurgency. Americans did not want to increase their military commitments overseas; they wanted to reduce them."

Yes, those weak-willed, loose-upper-lip Yankees, who lack the skills -- the calculated cruelty, the toffy nosed hypocrisy, the ability to "go native" [.pdf] -- to build and maintain an imperial infrastructure: they're just lazy, and cheapskates to boot. For Ferguson, the roots of this future conflagration have nothing to do with the implosion of the Iraqi state and the outbreak of civil war based on sectarian divisions: it's only that we "failed to quell" the insurgency, presumably due to a lack of resolve and the requisite bloodthirstiness. Aside from that, the insurgency is a mere detail in Ferguson's grand mosaic of the Great War's genesis, which has to do with such macro-economic and geopolitical mega-concepts as the growing importance of petroleum, the inevitable ebb and flow of demographics, and the ideological fervor of "Islamism."

"Brokeback Mountain" is a politically correct piece of anti-family and anti-American propaganda aimed at poking a finger into the eye of the 128 million Christians who go to church every week. "Syriana" is a neo-Marxist, anti-American diatribe that tries to create sympathy for murderous Islamic terrorists.

American TV viewers should just turn off Monday night's Golden 'Grope' Awards ceremony.

"Brokeback Mountain" deserves the 2005 Predatory Sex Abuser Award, but the real culprits are the 86 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who pick these politically correct turkeys and box-office losers and their co-conspirators -- the secular pundits in the national news media and film critics for hyping the box-office numbers for "Brokeback Mountain."

MAKOLONGWE -- A 30-year-old man alleges that he was attacked by what he calls 'invisible creatures' while he was asleep on Friday night. He said the devilish torture lasted for approximately 20 minutes.

Ndivhuwo Rammbuda (30) of Makolongwe, near Shadani, said he locked his one-roomed house as usual before he went to bed on Friday night. He explains how the troubles started at midnight: "I make sure that I close all the windows of my house and lock the door before I go to sleep each night. I thought I was dreaming when I saw two creatures the size of small piglets making a terrible noise inside my house. They then moved into my bed and started mishandling me. I don't know how they got inside the room as the door was locked. After some time, the creatures disappeared and the next minute there was a big banging sound. I tried to scream but my voice could not come out..."

Ndivhuwo said his room was immediately filled with flames but they didn't burn him. He suspects it was ndadzi (a special bird that superstitiously emits flames to kill its object) that was sent by witches to destroy him. "While I was still in shock, cement debris started attacking me as it fell on my bed like rain. I covered my whole body with a blanket to avoid injury. Thereafter came a dead silence, but I could not sleep until the next morning..."

The visibly shocked bachelor said when he woke up in the morning he found that his stoep was damaged and the cement debris that "attacked" him on his bed was the remains of his stoep.

"I'm still puzzled how the cement debris got into my house because the door was locked. It is also still a mystery how it managed to fly into my house to come and attack me in my sleep..."

The cement debris still bears testimony to the memorable event because Ndivhuwo did not throw it away. His house was slightly damaged on top of one window frame and a corrugated iron on the roof was slightly damaged.

However, Ndivhuwo remains adamant that he will not move out of his house, despite the attack. "I will rather die here than moving out. I think these are the works of jealous people who want to destroy my life. I will never give in and I will continue with life until I win my battle for a better life..."

A well-known Limpopo traditional healer, Dr Zacharia Ramaliba, says mysterious experiences like this happen but he denied that it was a ndadzi. "If it were a ndadzi, it would have killed him, or he might have fainted, while his tongue protrudes out of his mouth. He would even not tolerate its odour because of its strength. I cannot deny or confirm that these are the works of some people but I advise him to do something about it..."

Pastor Mboswobeni Mankhili of the Wells of Revival Church says Ndivhuwo should turn to God to avoid things of this nature. "Only the power of prayer can save him and the choice is his whether to choose life or death..."

Montreal, Quebec -- Seven Jewish sites within two blocks of each other were smashed in Montreal yesterday, and Jews are blaming a Russian national socialist group whose website address was spraypainted on their synagogue.

The website, http://www.nso-korpus.info/, is of the Russian National Socialist Organization, and while the Jewish press says the site shows pictures of Adolf Hitler, what it shows more is pictures of the group's members engaged in paramilitary training and pictures of various actions the group has engaged in. In fact, the website is pretty cool.

Jewish organizations said that a Jewish school, Jewish community center, and a Jewish temple were among the buildings vandalized. They claimed an 84 percent rise in "Anti-Semitic" incidents in Montreal in 2005, including the firebombing of a Jewish school.

Jews have spread hate in Canada and have made it illegal for anyone to speak out publicly against Jewish influence, and thus have made it so it is no more criminal to set a Jewish school on fire than it is to publish a pamphlet critical of Jewish power. The result has been less public expression of anti- Jewish views and more burning of Jewish schools.

Four heckle Troy MLK marchers

TROY | Four self-described members of the National Socialist Movement on Monday taunted more than 30 people taking part in the city's annual Martin Luther King Jr. march downtown. After praying by City Hall, marchers sang We Shall Overcome while walking on Market Street to the Troy Fire Department on Race Street, where they prayed for police and firefighters and praised them for their courage. They ignored remarks hurled at them by two men and two women whose clothing sported swastikas and messages such as "White Power." "Martin Luther King was a joke," yelled one of the dissenters, Mark Martin of Covington. He took issue with aspects of King's personal life.

Mayor Mike Beamish said the march was meant to promote unity through diversity. "It's sad that there are still some individuals out there that haven't embraced Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream," Beamish said. He credited a heavy police presence with keeping the environment "respectful."

The story, though, is unconfirmed, as Pluss claims, at the same time, to have served in ultra-secret US special forces in Vietnam during the same period, and claims his military records there are sealed until twenty five years after his death -- a claim that has been repeatedly been debunked.

It is unclear if Pluss claiming to be a Jew is just his latest effort to recycle his reputation as he tried to re-enter the world of academia, or if he actually is of partial Jewish heritage.

Pluss recently published a story in History News Network making a number of outright false claims, including claiming that NSM members threatened him, and that he ony paid a $25 membership fee to join the NSM, when, in reality, he paid for a $600 life membership and made a number of other financial contributions to the group during his brief tenure. When asked if his latest revelations were "just another hoax", Pluss said "you don't know".

Pluss was removed from the NSM at the recommendation of this author because of mentally unstable behavior, stemming partly from his taking of prescription anti-depressants, and partly from his relationship with a former student. He later quit the NSM and claimed his time in the group was a "hoax".

DURING HIS BRIEF AND UNHAPPY tenure as the president of Columbia University, Dwight Eisenhower and the faculty did not always enjoy the warmest of relations. At one particularly contentious meeting, a Columbia scholar proudly informed Eisenhower that the university boasted "some of America's most exceptional physicists, mathematicians, chemists and engineers." The then-retired General was unimpressed. He was more concerned that the faculty consist of "exceptional Americans." "Dammit," he snapped, "what good are exceptional physicists . . . exceptional anything, unless they are [also] exceptional Americans."

The Eisenhower formulation, that being a good American should be paramount and scholarship should come second, is hardly a popular notion in academia: consider, for instance, the case of former Fairleigh Dickinson University Professor Jacques Pluss.

Until recently, Pluss was an adjunct member of FDU's history department where he was by all accounts a popular and well received instructor in the one class that he taught. As his former student Heather Tierney put it in an email, "He taught well and carried himself well." Tierney's comment reflects a consensus amongst Pluss' students.

But some of Pluss's activities outside the classroom were eye-raising. Pluss was--and still is--an officer for the National Socialist Movement. Pluss is a Nazi, a genuine bona-fide Hitler-adoring, Jew-hating Nazi. The National Socialist website that advertises his title as an officer of the Movement features images of Adolf Hitler and swastikas and urges visitors to "come and join the fight!" A phone call to the Movement's office is received by an answering machine whose greeting shrieks, "Wake Up, White America!"

On March 21, Fairleigh Dickinson fired Professor Pluss. Some faint-hearted academic types might have fretted that the dismissal was perhaps the first step down a slippery slope that would chill free speech throughout academia; Farleigh Dickinson eagerly put such fears to rest. The dean of the college, John Snyder, has flatly stated that Pluss's termination was solely the result of an unacceptable amount of absences on Pluss's part. In an interview, Snyder explained that Pluss's class was scheduled to meet only 15 times during the semester and at the time of his dismissal Pluss had already racked up 6 absences. Snyder also claimed in our interview that Pluss's off-hours goose-stepping habit didn't come to the university's attention until after Pluss was dismissed. Snyder claimed to not know if any other adjunct faculty members had comparably poor attendance records.

Professor Pluss disputes Dean Snyder's account of the situation. The professor pointed out in an email that he wasn't "fired," or certainly not "fired" in the sense that Americans not employed in academia understand the term. While it's true that Professor Pluss is no longer allowed to teach his class, he is still receiving his faculty salary and is in no way barred from the campus. What's more, Pluss insists that he had only three absences and that all three were handled in an appropriate way and necessitated by medical reasons.

While Snyder sounded sincere during our interview regarding the causes for Pluss's firing (or non-firing), some people have speculated the university had availed itself of a lawyerly way out of a potential predicament. But as attorney Paul Seyferth, an expert in employment law, points out, "Assuming Pluss was an at will employee (as one would expect an adjunct faculty member like Pluss to be), the university would have been well within its rights to fire Pluss 'just' for being a Nazi. An at will employee can be fired for any reasons not specifically prohibited by law, such as race, sex, age, etc., and (depending on what state you're in) sexual orientation."

STILL, IT'S UNSURPRISING--if also dismaying--that Fairleigh Dickinson took refuge in a technicality like Pluss's allegedly deficient attendance record. As Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz said in an interview, "Colleges and universities are terrified of taking on the substantive issue in such matters." Dershowitz pointed to the Ward Churchill kerfuffle as a parallel case study.

So why does the modern academy so eschew the Eisenhower formulation? Eisenhower clearly would have deemed Pluss a sub-par American, given Ike's lengthy dealings with Pluss's kindred spirits. Were Eisenhower running Fairleigh Dickinson, he probably would have been more forthright.

But should a university fire a man for his political beliefs and activities? Professor Dershowitz would be uncomfortable with a termination for such causes.

Dershowitz explains that he grew up during McCarthyism and is by nature wary of such situations. He also points to the Stalinist maxim, "Show me the man and I'll find the crime," the suggestion being that any "undesirable" individual could be found guilty so long as the prosecution is willing to be creative enough. Applied to academia, the aphorism would imply that a professor found politically wanting could be terminated for other reasons.

AND YET ONE MUST ASK, is the academy really incapable of making certain common-sense decisions without pushing itself down a slippery slope that culminates in a new McCarthyism? After all, Professor Pluss's politics are not on the borderline of acceptability. This isn't Noam Chomsky, who is a putatively gifted linguist but an anti-American crackpot. But as risible as Chomsky's views are, they can still claim some misguided champions in respectable circles; even anti-American crackpot's see Pluss's politics as being beyond the pale.

And why is it such a far-fetched concept in the vast marketplace of academia that individual universities would be willing to step up and say, "We draw a bright line between what's acceptable and what is not." For instance, it's hard to imagine Fairleigh Dickinson suffering much of a public relations hit were it to proudly announce, "Neo-Nazi faculty are not welcome here." And yet, in academia, there is a curious reluctance to make such a forceful statement.

Somewhere, General Eisenhower weeps.

Now It Can Be Told: Why I Pretended to Be a Neo-Nazi

Dr. Pluss earned his Ph.D. in medieval History at the University of Chicago in June, 1983, under the tutelage of Professors Julius Kirshner and the late Eric Cochrane. He also earned a Certificate of Study in Civil Law from Queens' College, Cambridge (1980-1981). He held a postdoctoral Instructorship in the College of the University of Chicago from 1982 to1984, and then rose to the rank of Associate Professor with Tenure at the William Paterson University of New Jersey (1984-2000). He served in Command Observations during the Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He is a Certified Show Jumping Instructor and a Certified Psychoanalyst (University of Lausanne, Switzerland, 1978). From January 2002 to March, 2005, he served as an Adjunct Instructor in History and Political Science at Fairleigh- Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus, where he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in History and International Relations.

Editor's Note: A year ago, in a controversial decision, Fairleigh Dickinson University fired historian Jacques Pluss after it was revealed that he was a member of the National Socialist Movement. (The school insisted he was fired for missing classes.) The decision drew national headlines. A Neo-Nazi on the faculty of a bona fide university? News accounts indicated that Pluss, an adjunct for several years at the school, was a popular teacher. Students said he didn't bring his politics into the classroom. It didn't seem to add up. It didn't for a reason, says Mr. Pluss.

Throughout the course of my academic career, I came to hold in deep respect the scholarship of the French Deconstructionists, particularly Jacques Derrida and Michele Foucault (especially Foucault's Archeology of Knowledge and his History of Madness). At the same time, my work -- in teaching and in academic writing -- has been heavily influenced by the notion of Geistesgeschichte, as articulated by one of the premier medievalists, Ernst Kantorowicz. All of those scholars stress, each in their own way, the need for the historian to "become" her or his subject in order to develop a relationship with it.

I have also been a life-long non-academic author, primarily of poetry. In that capacity, I developed a feel -- yes, "feel" is about the only way I can put it -- for the poets of the Romantic Era, particularly the works of Percy Bysshe Shelley, Byron, and the prose of Mary Shelley. Through reading them, in my own dolce styl nuovo, it slowly yet surely dawned upon me that any attempt to understand a group, a movement, or an individual psyche, would have to include becoming, as much as an individual can, the subject under study. These notions are fully articulated in my first novel, Jumping Fences. An Artfully Crafted Madness ( Ridgewood, NJ and Aarau, Switzerland: Aargau Books LLC, 2005). Jumping Fences is a disguised episodical autobiography focusing on my emotional, romantic and intellectual struggles from my teen years to 2003.

To move to the central point of this piece, why and how did I become a neo-Nazi (in fact, a rather prominent one) in February, 2005? In truth, I have never been a person of passionate political persuasion. Yet tyranny from either the right or the left has forever seemed anathema to me. And, after producing a novel centered upon highly personal, passionate and emotion material, I decided to shift gears and enter the political realm, for the purpose of gathering research to write a book on a political subject in which I could personally partake and which was "fringe" in the most essential aspect of the word. Those literary ruminations brought me to the National Socialist Movement, the most flashy neo-Nazi group I could find. Flashy, to be sure. Completely skewed in political and social outlook, no doubt. So, I downloaded an application form on February 14, 2005, and, after sending a $25.00 check and waiting about a week, my application was heartily accepted.

Accept me? Well, of all things, why not? I was hardly surprised. After all, not many academics holding doctorates applied. In fact, not many individuals with an education over the high school level applied. With me, the NSM performed a true set of kudos. They put me on their broadband radio station immediately. My weekly show, "White Viewpoint," spewed venom against Jews, Blacks and Hispanics. All I needed to do was to keep harping on the same pedantic nonsense about Jewish world conspiracy, the "Browning" of America," and the failure of our present leaders in Washington to stem the tide of illegal immigration from south of our national borders. If I could give the party line in an articulate manner, back up my reasoning with reference to actual current events, and quote from historical, examples, all the better!

What of my dismissal from the Metropolitan Campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University? In fact, the whole "dismissal" was very easily engineered. No, a member of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith did not stumble across my radio broadcasts. No, I surely did not spout Nazi propaganda in the classroom. No, I did not show up on campus in a brown-shirted Storm Trooper uniform. All I had to do was write a letter.

I think my audience will find the exact circumstances of my "outing" myself quite amusing. And, frankly, the whole departure from Fairleigh-Dickinson was an inevitability. You see, in late January, 2005, my school secretary informed me, on the sly, that no history adjuncts would be reappointed in September, 2005. Her reasoning was "financial cut backs." Since, on top of my impending departure, I'd already held a tenured post (Associate Professor of History, William Paterson University of New Jersey, 1984-2000 [tenured 1988]) which I'd left in order to write and work with horses, I considered that the time was right to use myself as a human literary experiment. The letter itself, noting that I was a dangerous member of an international neo-Nazi group and also probably a member of the Irish Republican Army (nonsense, of course), was posted by me and mailed simply to "Editor, University Newspaper, Fairleigh-Dickinson University, 1000 River Road, Teaneck, NJ, USA." What gave the whole affair a true "punch" was that the letter was posted from the Republic of Ireland (it was composed in Galway and posted in the village of Spital) while I was in that beautiful land on a Spring Break vacation with my grown daughter!

Apparently, the Monday morning following Spring Break (March 21, 2005), a completely panicked Faculty Cabinet met in secret session, my letter was read aloud by the President of the Cabinet, and it was decided that I be "removed from the classroom with pay" for the remainder of the term. I was notified of that action via a cell phone call from my School Director, Professor Faremarz Fatemi, at 5:30 pm that Monday, at my home. I was not told of any Faculty Cabinet Meeting. When asked why I was being "removed," the Director's only response was that "the decision had been made for the convenience of the University." No reference was made to any political activities or organizations. I requested, and was not permitted, a hearing with the School Dean. Just ten days later, on March 31, 2005, a lengthy article appeared in the Equinox, citing excessive absences which never occurred. My political orientation as a neo-Nazi was surely described, but it was not cited as a reason for my removal. A number of statements made on my radio program, all anti-minority, were quoted, also. I discovered the true chronology of events through a student of mine who reported for the Equinox, had seen the letter, and had concurrently been informed of the actual situation through his therapist at the University Mental Health Clinic. The Therapist, Dr. David Mednick, had been at the Cabinet Meeting.

From there, a sensational Nazi-busting story was leaked (probably by student reporters) to the local press, the Internet, and so forth, and I was on my way to living the experiences I needed in order to gather live research for my forthcoming volume on the "wacky White Power Movement" in the United States, tentatively entitled "False Blizzard." I resigned from the National Socialist Movement in early October, 2005.

The reaction of my (former) "colleagues" in the National Socialist Movement came in two phases. They corresponded to the two phases I employed in resigning from the group. First, at the end of the first week of October, 2005, I resigned from the National Socialist Movement via an email (which I didn't have the stomach to keep) to the "Commander" of the NSM, Jeffrey Schoep of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I noted that if the NSM existed during the actual Third Reich Adolf Hitler would probably have purged most members. That comment raised the hair on their backs, I'm sure. But, publicity about my departure was kept under wraps. Clearly, the NSM did not want to make public the loss of one of their National Officers, who had been made a Lifetime Member in August 2005.

The second phase came about a week later, when I disclosed to a number of White Power message boards that I had, in fact, joined the group to research a new book. I told them I had "outed myself" without going into any detail. At that point, all Hell broke loose. I was vilified on the Internet via scurrilous attacks against my sanity, my military record -- and its lack of availability to public scrutiny as per two Executive Orders (Executive Order 1975 and Executive Order 2000 in re: National Security) -- and my academic credentials. I was threatened physically via early morning phone calls to my residence. Likewise, my fiancee was vilified and threatened. Frankly, I have little fear of any physical reprisals. Members of most White Power groups have neither the courage, the organizational skill, nor the desire to endanger themselves, to do anybody in my position any physical harm. Still. . . .

Finally, what were the reactions of my colleagues and my students? Well, the reactions of my colleagues were, essentially, monochromatic. It became clear to me very quickly after my "removal" from the classroom that I was completely unwelcome on campus. On three trips there after my outing myself, I received the complete silent treatment. I was simply treated as if I were not present. On one memorable occasion, a full-time colleague of mine from the History faculty actually moved to the other side of the hallway as I walked to the exit for the parking lot. I was completely persona non grata, and that was that.

In terms of my students, I saw none on my last trips to the campus. I do not believe this was in any way intentional, however. Two students phoned me at my home (yes, I was one of those types to give out my home number at exam time) with truly kind messages of support. One insisted she could not believe what was being said about the "dangerous neo-Nazi" professor. The other told me that "no matter what my politics were, it didn't matter to him. I was still one of his best teachers." Frankly, he made me tear. Then, there were the others -- maybe between half a dozen and a dozen -- who made negative statements about me for the student newspaper or an Internet source. They said things like "he seemed like an unbiased teacher, but as I look back at things. . . ." Those comments hurt. Yet, for the sake of the success of my book research, they had to be accepted with as much humor as I could muster.

Did I reveal the truth to any of my students? Did I attempt to take my shying colleagues into my confidence? No. Absolutely not. Revealing my research to others would have meant intellectualizing it to myself. I would have lifted my psyche from its necessary emotional context. As much as was possible, I had to assume the role. I had to become, as much as my very being allowed me, the subject of my study. In the final analysis, you see, no volume could make live Ernst Kantorowicz's idea of Geistesgeschichte without fully partaking the "spirit of the era," even if that meant forcing myself to wear a neo-Nazi facade until I came to understand, in the core of my poetic sense, the neo-Nazis as the fraudulent thugs my mere intellect told me they were.

In conclusion, if there is any lesson I hope to impart to the historical community, it is that we historians will never grasp history as a felt and sensed discipline without an attempt to live a historical era as the British Romantic Poets lived the joy, and the torment, motivating and rising from their verse.

The Neo-Nazi Who Wasn't

The strange story of Jacques Pluss just got stranger.

In March, Pluss was fired from his position as an adjunct professor of history at Fairleigh Dickinson University shortly after it became known that he had become a leader of the National Socialist Movement of the United States, which is also known as the American Nazi Party. Students and colleagues at the New Jersey institution were stunned, but Pluss could be heard on Nazi radio broadcasts and made racist and anti-Semitic comments to reporters covering his dismissal.

Today, in an article being published on the History News Network, Pluss explains that he was never a real Nazi, but pretended to be one and outed himself so that Fairleigh Dickinson would fire him -- all to collect material so he could write a book.

In an interview, Pluss explained why he became a Nazi by saying: "I do not believe that any historian can fully grasp the actual spirit that is the essence of their subject unless they participate in it, and that participation has to come in as full a manner as possible."

In his article, Pluss cited the influence of the French deconstructionists Derrida and Foucault, as well as the work of Ernst Kantorowicz, a historian of medieval Europe, to explain why he pretended to be a Nazi. While all three scholars dealt in varying ways with issues of reality, their followers have not generally been known to take the approach Pluss did. Pressed further on why he pretended to be a Nazi, he also cited interviews in which Anthony Hopkins discussed trying to think like an evil person when he was preparing for the role of Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs.

The research from his time as a Nazi will go into a book that will probably take the form of historical fiction, Pluss said. He said that he anticipates publishing the book with his own publishing company.

Pluss seemed somewhat surprised by questions on whether there were moral issues associated with writing for Nazi Web sites, making audiotapes of Nazi ideology, appearing at rallies in brownshirt uniforms, etc. He acknowledged that his actions as a Nazi had probably "caused pain" for some people, but said that his findings were significant. Asked about them, he said, "There is nothing romantic about putting on a Nazi uniform and playing Third Reich. That ended in 1945. There are connections between white power groups that reach far and wide, and include a sort of spider web across America -- skinhead groups, National Socialist groups that don't use uniforms, and so forth."

Told that the links among various white power groups have been well documented by groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, he said, "I became a Neo-Nazi because when I was thinking of applying my historical method last year, I wanted to find the most hard-hittingly obnoxious group that I could come up with."

He stressed that he finds Nazi ideology offensive. He said that he realizes his approach upset his former colleagues and students at Fairleigh Dickinson; at William Paterson University, where he previously was a tenured professor of history; and at the University of Chicago, where he earned his Ph.D. Pluss said that he couldn't tell anyone about his deception as that would have disturbed his "method acting approach."

He said he did make one exception: He told his mother, who he said was Jewish and who recently died, that he was faking his Nazi ties. (Pluss said that his one-time Nazi colleagues never learned that he had a Jewish parent, and that he does not practice any religion.)

A spokeswoman for Fairleigh Dickinson said that officials there did not have any comment on the latest revelations from Pluss. She said she did not know of anyone at the university who was aware of the deception.

Rick Shenkman, editor of the History News Network, said today's article came about when Pluss contacted him to complain about being listed on the Web site's "Historians on the Hot Seat" list of scholars involved in various scandals.

Shenkman said that Pluss was surprised that his October resignation from the Nazi organization hadn't been noticed or led to his removal from the list.

Pluss said he was looking forward to people knowing the nature of his time as a Nazi. Asked if we can know with confidence that he's not engaged in another hoax, he said, "you don't know," but insisted that he was telling the truth -- this time.

Method acting?

There is madness in this scholar's Method. If Pruss actually wanted to practice the Method, he ought to have learned a little more about the art of acting. An actor playing a murderer does not prepare by murdering someone. He might try what Method folks call "affective memory," recalling experiences that are in some ways similar to the experiences of a character, in this case, getting in touch with his inner bigot, perhaps. But an actor knows if he gets caught up in a character's feelings, he will not be able to give a controlled performance. And actors aren't afraid to discuss their preparation with a director/department chair and other actors/colleagues. --Davi Napoleon

Galileo Moment

I think Dr. Pluss is having a "Galileo Moment" -- "They persecuted geniuses through the ages..." etc., etc., -- which just reveals the depth of his isolation from the historical profession. There are historians who participate in historical recreations, from debates to reenactments, even television documentaries (1900 House, Frontier House) which are fantastic recreations of lost milieu which we can use as teaching tools.

There's a long debate about the importance of empathy and sympathy in historical writing as well, but one thing that the vast majority of historians agree on is that "direct experience" is not necessary; in fact, it's often more of a barrier to dispassionate analysis than an aid.

Finally, I'd invite him to repost the website he was referring to, as the once cited above does not appear to exist.

No, I have no desire to re-enter the academic world. If I liked it that much, I would never have left a tenured post at the William Paterson University of New Jersey in 2000 -- I would have stayed on and, like most, slowly become sclerotic as I tried my best to penetrate the cyber-soaked minds of American youth today. I far prefer riding my horses and writing independently. And what's so very sweet about it all, gang, is I will never have to worry about a pay check to get by. That was such a fitting accident of birth, which I'll reflect on as I gaze upon the same Alps Percy Shelley did -- on my next trip to Switzerland, the place of my birth. Happy Trails!

We already know that he's a liar since he admitted it. But anybody who would do something so hurtful to others and not care cannot claim that he was insincere. He effectively told many people that he wants to see them dead, and see their entire families wiped off the face of the earth. If somebody told me that he wanted to see me dead, I'd take it as a direct threat on my life.

Ironically, if his mother was Jewish, that makes him Jewish too. It's not only the Jewish people who hold that view, but also the Nazis who would have gladly killed him for being Jewish regardless of what religious practices he may or may not have.

Jaques Pluss

Re: Jaques Pluss and his assuming the role of a Nazi.The activity is not strange or rare and I am surprised at the near total negative reaction of readers. Sociologists and anthropologists for decades have done the same when investigating other cultures. The method goes by a number of names, (such as "endo" vs. "ecto" or the like) made most famous by the antics of Carlos Castaneda 40 years ago when he claimed to do the same when investigating the hallucinatory experiences of Northern Mexico native tribes and healers. Remember Don Juan? Castaneda won his UCLA PhD in anthropology for his thesis which recounted his adventures. Except in his case he made the whole thing up, creating the grandest literary hoax of the 20th century, possibly ever. He was exposed by psychologist/historian and writer, Richard De Mille, nephew of Cecil B., a resident of Santa Barbara. De Mille's investigation of Castaneda, recorded in his two books, is a classic in detective work. But the relevant point is that the assumption of the cultural roles as a method of investigation and description is a well known and accepted academic method, in order to be able to describe the subjective experience of the culture's members. .One may disagree with the ethics and the objectivity of such method, but why the fuss? Pluss is honest about his adventure -- and deserves credit for a courageous and risky piece of investigation. I am anxious to read more. Wallace Sampson MD

An Eldora inventor has received a $500,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to commercialize a machine that removes water and odors from hog manure by spinning the slurry like a tornado. Concerns over water pollution, odor and noxious gases contained in hog manure have plagued Iowa's hog industry. The Tempest dryer can help solve that problem, said Loran Balvanz, who developed the Tempest dryer through Global Resource Recovery Organization Inc., an Eldora-based company he founded by in 1999. Balvanz is chairman of the company.

The machine removes water from hog manure by spinning the slurry at a high speed. Water is sucked off the top of the dryer and is vented outside, where it vaporizes. Solids whirl to the edge of the dryer where they can be collected, reducing the volume and weight of the treated product. The dryer also has been used to treat other waste products, Balvanz said. Because the Tempest separates water from the solids in the manure, Balvanz said, it can solve air and water quality problems caused by hog manure.

Kelly Dixon, a University of Montana anthropology professor, and Julie Schablitsky, a historical archaeologist at the University of Oregon, had the science world buzzing Thursday after they presented their findings at the Society for Historical Archaeology 2006 Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology in Sacramento, Calif. After three years conducting the most comprehensive Donner camp study ever undertaken -- a study that included forensic science, DNA testing and collaboration with experts in the field of trauma, psychology and medicine -- the researchers' work led to a startling conclusion.

The Donner Party cannibalism legend may be just legend after all. Of the thousands of bone fragments uncovered at the Donner family's cooking hearth, none were human, Dixon said. There's plenty of evidence showing the pioneers dined on rabbit, deer, rodents, their horses and cattle -- and on Uno -- but no evidence of the human bones promised in legend and historical accounts.

Iran vowed to put an end to tough UN inspections of its atomic programme and fully resume sensitive nuclear fuel work if its case is referred to the Security Council.

Iran's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ali Asgar Soltaniyeh, also told the student news agency ISNA that a decision to kick-start nuclear research work was "irreversible". "As I said recently, if Iran's nuclear case leaves the framework of the IAEA for the Security Council, the government -- in line with the law voted by parliament -- will end voluntary cooperation," he was quoted as saying Tuesday. He said this included an end to a voluntary suspension of certain nuclear fuel work.

While Iran has restarted uranium enrichment research -- a move that prompted the latest crisis -- it is for now maintaining a freeze on large-scale enrichment work. Soltaniyeh said the reprisals would also include Tehran ending the application of the additional protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which gives more power to IAEA inspectors. The protocol was signed by Iran's previous reformist government but has not yet been ratified by the conservative parliament. "This message is very clear and very direct, and the (IAEA) secretariat and members must understand this," he stressed.

Students choosing not to report ethnicity

When Rae-Lynn Conger, a junior at Eastern Washington University, is asked to identify her race on forms or applications, she checks an increasingly popular box: Other. It's not that Conger doesn't know which box is correct. She just objects to the premise that her race -- she's white -- is considered at all. "My main rationale for doing it is that I don't believe my ethnicity or my gender has any bearing on my potential as a person," said Conger, an Omak, Wash., native who's president of the campus Republican group.

Conger and other "others" are one of the fastest-growing categories of students, as universities try to measure and increase their enrollments of ethnic minorities. As the figures rise, some university officials have suggested that a part of the reason is the increase of multiracial students or others who don't see their specific circumstances reflected in the five broad categories used in higher education -- white, African American, Native American, Asian American and Hispanic.

A new report suggests that a lot of the "unknowns" are actually white -- at least in the three schools surveyed in California -- and that the increase in that category is masking an even larger imbalance of racial makeup in the country's colleges and universities. The report, issued by the James Irvine Foundation, calls for better statistics to measure progress.

"With this more accurate data, we will have not only a better sense of the true racial/ethnic composition of our colleges and universities, but also a better gauge of the access various students have to, and the success they have through, higher education," the report says.

During the 1990s, the percentage of American college students who chose not to report their race or ethnicity nearly doubled, from 3.2 percent to 5.9 percent. The pattern is even more pronounced at Washington State and Eastern Washington universities, where the percentage of students who didn't report an ethnic category in 2005 was 9.5 percent and 13.2 percent, respectively.

At the University of Idaho, the figure has stayed fairly level over the last decade. However, at 7.8 percent, it's a bigger portion of the student population than the 7 percent of identified minorities. At Gonzaga University in Spokane, the percentage of unknown students is at 7.6 percent -- up slightly from recent years.

The increase, and the recent findings in the California survey, suggests to some that the students are playing the "race game," hiding their whiteness in an age of intense focus on multiculturalism. On the Web site Inside Higher Ed, comments attached to a story about the study consistently focused on the "disadvantage" of being white in college admissions.

"Being white is not widely perceived to be an advantage, so why make it easy to be identified as 'just another white kid,'" one writer said. Another wrote, "I would be willing to bet a huge percentage of those who chose not to identify their race were not only white, but male."

[...] In the survey of first-year students, researchers consistently found more white students and fewer unknowns than they did in the applications. The percentage of white students in the first-year survey were between 14 and 28 percentage points higher than those in the applications.

"Whiteness" course at CU prompts colorful debate

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - People stare when University of Colorado student Maren Gauldin wears her "Black is Beautiful" T-shirt. That's because she's white. The shirt, Gauldin says, is like a tag that forces her to engage in conversations about race, forces her to feel a tiny bit like black and Latino students on an overwhelmingly white campus. "Every time I put it on, I feel uncomfortable," Gauldin told students at a white-privilege symposium last month that filled an auditorium and spilled into a hallway. "It helps me think about the kind of activist I want to be."

The symposium was one part of an introspective look by white CU scholars and students at the privileges they say are automatically afforded the white race. Awareness of the relatively new field, called whiteness studies, is building at CU as the university examines its diversity and racial strife. The field of study -- by some accounts born 10 years ago at a conference at the University of California at Berkeley and now taught at hundreds of universities -- has its critics, who call it white-bashing rhetoric that shows how far academia has strayed from mainstream society.

"Whiteness studies is not about white-bashing, and it's not about white supremacy," said Duncan Rinehart, who will teach CU's fourth whiteness-studies course this semester. "As long as whiteness is invisible, it's contributing to inequality and injustice. There is a fair amount of just flat-out denial, not malicious, but denial nonetheless."

Feminist scholar Peggy McIntosh, whose essay on white privilege often is required reading for students in whiteness studies, defines it as an "invisible weightless knapsack." "I have come to see white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets that I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was 'meant' to remain oblivious," she says.

The growing discussion of white privilege at CU has attracted some negative response, and the attacks have spilled into the university's examination of its lack of diversity. The European/American Issues Forum -- an organization that says it is not white supremacist but stands up for white rights -- has e-mailed a couple dozen student leaders and filed three open-records requests with CU interim president Hank Brown asking for university expenses on ethnic clubs. One e-mail included statistics of crimes against whites by blacks. Its president, Louis Calabro, also has demanded a representative of European American rights on CU's 44-member blue-ribbon diversity panel. Calabro, a 73-year-old retired San Francisco police lieutenant, found out about the white-privilege symposium on the Internet and was incensed. He said CU has created a culture of white guilt by teaching that "everybody else are the victims and we're the perps." "The University of Colorado has a campus that's hostile to European American white people," he said.

The Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, which tracks hate groups, has had Calabro on its radar for years, said deputy director Heidi Beirich. But the European/American Issues Forum has not crossed the line from representing the rights of whites to hating other races, Beirich said.

Student-government leaders say they are trying to ignore Calabro. "We were getting a lot of types of these crazy e-mails," said Stephen Fenberg, chief of staff for the student union. "They were on Web sites discussing the issue, saying (white privilege) is this liberal idea that doesn't really exist." Fenberg is an environmental- studies major, but he can define whiteness studies -- proof, he says, that the campus is awakening to the concept.

Some complaints center on a fear that the university will push toward stronger affirmative-action policies to recruit more black and Latino students, who represent 1.5 percent and 5.8 percent of the student body, respectively. Hundreds of universities across the country offer whiteness-studies courses, estimates Jeff Hitchcock, executive director of the Center for Study of White American Culture in New Jersey, which alerts visitors to its Web site that it's not a white-supremacist group.

The center tries to debunk the only two views in the United States concerning whiteness -- either as white supremacist or color blindness, a belief that whites have no race and therefore don't need to worry about it, Hitchcock said.

Outside of academia, not many have heard of whiteness studies, said Matthew Spalding, director of the Center for American Studies at the Heritage Foundation. He called it an abstract, "invalid category of education" based on the "assumption that you should teach according to racial categories." "Things like this show the increasing divide between the outer reaches of the academy and the average American," Spalding said. "Not only do they not know about these things, my guess is the average American couldn't come up with this if they tried."

While black studies and Chicano studies highlight the accomplishments of the underrepresented, whiteness studies carries a "philosophical baggage" meant to tear down the white race, Spalding said. The course is popular at CU, though, and it's mostly white students who take it, said Eleanor Hubbard, a retired CU professor who taught it. Professors had to turn away students, capping the class at about 60 a semester. But the concept of white privilege is infused in many sociology and ethnic-studies courses.

To fight racism, whites need to see they have advantages that are a "result of them being white, not for any other reason like they are smarter or have a better education," Hubbard said. "It's not about feeling guilty," she said. "That doesn't help anyone. What is helpful is to use those privileges to make changes so that equality is possible."

BNP boss race case sparks protest

Up to 600 opponents of the BNP protested outside the court

Hundreds of protestors gathered outside Leeds Crown Court ahead of the trial of British National Party leader Nick Griffin on race hate charges. Mr Griffin and BNP member Mark Collett, both deny charges of using words or behaviour intended or likely to stir up racial hatred. They were charged in April last year after a BBC documentary on the party in West Yorkshire was screened in 2004. The judge has warned demonstrators not to try and influence the proceedings. A jury has been sworn in but the start of the trial was postponed to Tuesday. Mr Griffin, from Welshpool, mid-Wales, is accused of four counts of the charge.

Party activist Mr Collett, from Rothley, near Leicester, faces eight charges.

A BBC reporter at the scene said up to 600 opponents of the party demonstrated outside Leeds Crown Court as they waited for Mr Griffin and Mr Collett to arrive at court. They were kept apart from up to 150 BNP supporters by a heavy police presence. Five people were arrested for public order offences during the demonstrations.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Norman Jones, began proceedings by warning the demonstrators not to try and influence the proceedings. He said documents they were handing out could be seen as "an attempt to undermine the British Justice System" and urged them to stop.

The start of Mr Griffin's trial has been postponed due to legal delays "Outside this court today two groups of people have seen fit to come to make massive demonstrations expounding the views of two sides of a particular argument, he said. "People have every right to expound views in relation to any argument. This is a free society and it is important that public demonstration is permitted. "It cannot be said too strongly that if some of those, in either group, are trying to act in a way in which they can influence this trial they will not succeed in doing so." Potential jurors were also warned not to take any documents from demonstrators and asked whether they felt able to approach the case in a fair and unbiased way.

Mayor Chocolate Nagin: America's flavorite racist

Oh, fudge. It's not every day in America that a newsmaker gets a colorful nickname associated with him or her. It's even harder for newsmakers to get two catchy monikers.

But New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, heretofore known as "School-bus Nagin" for failing to use his own buses to save people in advance of Hurricane Katrina, has beaten the odds with his tasty yet distasteful description of New Orleans as a "chocolate" city. Thus, I hereby dub him, "Mayor Chocolate Nagin, America's flavorite racist."

In case you missed the dishonorable mayor's comment yesterday -- on Martin Luther King Day no less -- Nagin, who is black, promised the Crescent City would become "chocolate" once again.

"We ask black people ... It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans -- the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said. "And I don't care what people are saying in Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day."

He also noted: "This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans." All bad grammar aside, I'm stunned by these quintessentially racist remarks.

Perhaps Chocolate Nagin has never read the Bible, as I just can't seem to find any verse that even hints New Orleans should have a majority of black citizens there, despite his claim God wants it to be that way. Chocolate Nagin says, "You can't have New Orleans no other way."

Well, maybe you can. How about the novel concept of having the city filled with Americans, no matter what color or flavor they are? They could be chocolate, vanilla, coffee, salsa, teriyaki or tutti-fruity for that matter. Heck, I thought there was already a Cajun taste to the region.

New Orleans Mayor Says God Mad at U.S.

Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities, too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting. "Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day. "Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."

Nagin also promised that New Orleans will be a "chocolate" city again. Many of the city's black neighborhoods were heavily damaged by Katrina. "It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans _ the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said. "This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."

Nagin described an imaginary conversation with King, the late civil rights leader. "I said, `What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream and make it a reality?' He said, `I don't think that we need to pay attention any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He said, `The thing we need to focus on as a community _ black folks I'm talking about _ is ourselves.'" Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?" The reply, Nagin said, was: "We as a people need to fix ourselves first."

Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are "most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of many." A day earlier, gunfire erupted at a parade to commemorate King's birthday. Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of mostly black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or witnesses.
