Is David Irving any different from a racist skinhead?

LIBERAL angst alights on some very odd causes. Acres of newsprint and innumerable hours of broadcasting time have been devoted to tortured discussion of David Irving's temporary fate - three years in an Austrian slammer after being convicted of Holocaust denial.
It is doubtful whether many of those who regard Irving's incarceration as an attack on freedom of speech and a counter-productive act of martyr-creation would give a moment's thought to the fate of a gormless skinhead, convicted of shouting anti-Semitic or other racial poison at someone in a city street.
Yet what is the qualitative difference? If freedom of speech is an absolute, then surely the overt racial abuser is entitled to benefit? Why should Irving, by awarding himself the spurious titles of 'historian' and 'academic', be treated with any higher regard, particularly when his influence has been far greater than that of any mere camp-follower? Unlike most Britons who espouse similar views, Irving does not have the excuse of under-education. He knew the laws of Austria and believed he could flout them, boasting that he had already bought the first-class air ticket that would return him to Britain. His sentence has proved that supposition wrong. Good. Austria has its own perspective on these matters and has every right to make and enforce laws that reflect it.
There can be no such thing as absolute freedom of speech, for very good reasons. Competing freedoms have to be balanced, and the freedom of vulnerable minorities to be protected from abuse and harassment is just as precious as the right of individuals to hold and express their views. The aim of a liberal democratic society must be to achieve a balance of freedoms, rather than to assert the primacy of one over the other.
Self-imposed limitations to freedom of speech have also been amply illustrated in recent weeks. No British newspaper has published the cartoons that brought the wrath of much of the Muslim world down upon a Danish publication. That was a sound judgment. Quite reasonably, editors do not wish their premises to be burnt to the ground, and there was no over-riding reason for causing gratuitous offence.
However, the sensible recognition of such constraints sits uneasily with grander claims to a generalised belief in freedom of expression. "You can say anything about anyone who can be relied upon not to strike back" may be uncomfortably close to the reality - but it is not a particularly elevated sentiment. Yet I wonder how much of that double-standard underlies criticisms of the Austrian court? Maybe the ultra-right ravings of people like Irving have become so familiar, or separated in time from the events that they seek to deny, that their full capacity for evil is no longer recognised.
That would be dangerous indeed. Political advocates of extreme anti-Israeli positions are usually careful to deny the charge of anti-Semitism. In reality, the two are closely interlinked. Holocaust denial forms an integral part of the propaganda tide against Israel among its would-be destroyers. Anyone who, like Irving, contributes to the bogus intellectualisation of that affront has a great deal more to answer for than the skinhead in the street.
Since Irving was convicted, his nemesis - the American academic Deborah Lipstadt, whom he sued unsuccessfully after she described him as a Holocaust denier - has written: "During my trial, Irving kept trying to introduce evidence of a world Jewish cabal or global conspiracy against him. He described me as 'the gold-tipped spearhead of the enemies of truth', his euphemism for the Jews. He laughed at survivors, declaring them liars or psychopaths."
Lipstadt wrote that she took no satisfaction from Irving's imprisonment, believing that "the best way to counter Holocaust denial is to teach [its] history". The two approaches are not, however, incompatible. Each generation needs to know about the Holocaust, not only as the ultimate parable of man's inhumanity to man, but also as a deterrent to superficial assumptions about the rights and wrongs of contemporary events.
It is impossible to understand the case for the state of Israel without an awareness of the persecution that the Jewish people have suffered. As James Cameron wrote: "The introduction of the Jewish state into the Arab heartland exalted many hearts and broke many more... it produced the most intractable conflict of our times." For any balanced view, it is necessary to be aware of both sides of the history.
The images that we see so regularly of prosperous Israel and impoverished Palestine conceal as much as they reveal. There is enough in the histories of each to make the stones weep. Any humane rational assessment must surely recognise the right of both to exist, because the expulsion of one by the other is unthinkable. And while we cannot legislate for that outcome, we can at least stand firm against purveyors of hatred and ignorance within our own society, whose aim is not only to deny history but to finish the job.

More than 550 attacks took place in Iraq from Aug. 29, 2005, to Jan. 20, 2006, according to the latest "security and stability" report the Defense Department is required to send lawmakers every four months.
Speaking to Pentagon reporters Friday, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs said that the survey's conclusions "were not good," but that "loving us is not what it's about."
Awareness of the relative unpopularity of U.S. troops "is one of the reasons we want to turn over the battlespace" to the Iraqi security forces, Rodman said.
Only one period approaches the recent numbers: From June 29 to Nov. 26, 2004, which included the battle for Fallujah and major clashes with Shiite insurgents belonging to Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army.

conservative estimate. We will be looking at twice as many non-whites, and half the amount of
whites. Once we get to the point where the quality of life is gone, then numbers do not matter
anymore. Ladies and Gentleman, that time is already among us.
Sooner or later, every single one of us will have our lineage destroyed by a non-white. If it isn't
one's children, it will be one's grandchildren. If it isn't them, it will be one's great-grandchildren and
so on. The percentage chances will increase with every generation. Whites will find it increasingly
difficult to mate within their own race. Furthermore, the media will constantly bombard young
white children's minds with multiculturalism. Much like it is today, the world around them will be an
interracial "free-for-all." Except it will be even more rampant.

The fine against Midwest Oil of Minnesota is twice as large as any imposed on a company since 2001, when the state established a formula based on wholesale prices, fees and taxes to determine a daily floor for gas prices.
The price law was intended to prevent large oil companies from driving smaller competitors out of business, but some critics argue it fails to protect consumers.

Dr. Abasi, an advisor to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, said Tehran would respond to an American attack with strikes on the Dimona nuclear reactor and other strategic Israeli sites such as the port city of Haifa and the Zakhariya area.
Haifa is also home to a large concentration of chemical factories and oil refineries.
Zakhariya, located in the Jerusalem hills is - according to foreign reports - home to Israel's Jericho missile base. Both Israeli and international media have published commercial satellite images of the Zakhariya and Dimona sites.
Abasi, a senior lecturer at Tehran University, was quoted in the Roz internet news site, identified with reform circles in Iran.
Iranian affairs experts believe Abasi's statements are part of propaganda battle being wages by all sides - including Israel and Iran - in the lead up to next months United Nations Security Council debate on Iran's nuclear program.

Fistfights broke out and police made 17 arrests Saturday at a neo-Nazi rally and march through a predominantly black neighborhood.
In khaki uniforms, tall black boots and red arm patches bearing swastikas, about 30 members of the National Socialist Movement were barricaded on one side by SWAT team members at the rally. On the other side of the SWAT officers, a group of about 100 black-clad counter-demonstrators, many covering their faces with black masks, held anti-Nazi signs.
Several counter-demonstrators were arrested before the march officially began when pockets of violence erupted, police said. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was hurt.

KRASNODAR, Russia, July 24, (IslamOnline.net) - The United States has agreed to grant citizenship to 7,000 Ahiska Muslims who will be settled in Pennsylvania, reported a Russian newspaper on Friday, July 23.
The first 11-strong batch of the Ahiska Muslims, living in the Russian province of Krasnodar, left for Geneva on Thursday, July 22, before flying to Philadelphia, reported Novie Izvestia.
It added that the Muslims would be housed near the grand mosque in Philadelphia.
The paper recalled that Krasnodar governor Alexander Tkachev was notified of the American decision on February 15.
Izvestia said the Russian government does not treat Ahiska Muslims as citizens and has not therefore given them passports or IDs.
An official in Krasnodar administration had told Interfax on Tuesday, July 20, that of the 11,999 Ahiska Muslims living in the region, 4,943 have received Russian citizenship and 744 have embarked on Russian naturalization procedures.
He added that more than 5,000 others have expressed a desire to emigrate to the United States.
Earlier, Chingiz Neiman-zade, chairman of Vatan, a Meskheti Turks association based in Georgia, said the United States had offered to accept the Ahiska Muslims living in Krasnodar as immigrants.
"On February 16, the International Migration Organization began an information program in Krasnodar to explain the terms for the resettlement of the Ahiska Muslims in the U.S.," he told Chicago Tribune on Thursday, July 22.
"The immigrants will be provided with housing and furniture, they will be helped to learn the English language and to complete formalities needed for residence in the US, which is especially important, and have been promised life-long welfare allowances for pensioners and the disabled."

Eastern Nazis target black England stars

EXTREME right wing groups from eastern Europe are planning to subject
England's black football stars to racist abuse during the World Cup
tournament in Germany.
The gangs, from Serbia, Croatia and the Czech Republic, have held
meetings at which they agreed to put aside traditional rivalries for the
duration of the tournament.
Radi Jiricna, a Czech organiser of the "United Fascist Brigade", warned:
"We will be coming together to fight in Germany . . . our spiritual
home. We are looking for black English players because they are taking
the places of white players."
The Sunday Times has learnt of a meeting held two months ago in Serbia,
involving six Czech skinheads and the Delije, notoriously violent
supporters of Red Star Belgrade. Two weeks later they met a group of
hooligans from Croatia.
Fifteen years ago a pitched battle in a football stadium between Red
Star fans and a rival Croatian club was one of the sparks that ignited
the Balkan wars.
One of the Serbian organisers, Dragan Banovic, explained: "Germany will
be one big battleground this summer. This is an opportunity for our
groups to shout our message and to know people will hear it."
Banovic, a former paramilitary who fought in Bosnia alongside Arkan, the
Serbian war criminal assassinated in 2000, added: "For the time of the
World Cup, traditional rivalries will be forgotten. I will be able to
stand alongside others from Zagreb and Split, from Prague, Rome and
Milan to shout with one voice because we all feel the same.
"There will be many more in Germany who will have sympathy with us and
we think we will be able to cause many problems for the police. Our
targets are the black players and those who follow them. The black
players from England will be a good target for us because they will
react to what we shout and to the banners we will be carrying. We will
be throwing more than bananas at them."
The thugs say they will not be deterred by measures intended to prevent
them from buying tickets, and will fight outside the stadiums. They plan
to link up with like-minded hooligans from Italy's notorious extremist
groups to create "Ultras United".
At a meeting held in London last month, European police chiefs discussed
how to
prevent fascist groups from targeting African teams and black members of
the England squad, such as Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and Ledley King.
Two other England players, Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips, were
the victims of monkey chants a year ago during a friendly game against
Spain. The Spanish footballing authorities were forced to apologise for
the behaviour of spectators in Madrid. Piara Power, national
co-ordinator of the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign, said: "In some
places in eastern Europe, whenever there is a Jewish or black player on
the field of play, they are constantly abused."
Despite the relatively low levels of disorder at Euro 2004, held in
Portugal, and the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, senior
officers are worried that Germany will be harder to police. It has open
borders with nine neighbouring countries.
More than 3,200 England fans identified as troublemakers will be
stranded at home under banning orders that require them to surrender
their passports and report to local police stations on match days.
One police source, with responsibility for monitoring Europe-wide
hooliganism, said peaceful England fans might now be prime targets for
troublemakers seeking to test their prowess.
Superintendent Andreas Morbach, joint head of the German police
Landeskriminalamt football intelligence unit, based in Düsseldorf,
said: "We have a big potential for violence from our supporters. They
live here, they know how to act and they are now prepared."
Morbach said that 9,000-10,000 German hooligans could become violent,
depending on the provocation. The German police are concerned that
visiting England and Holland fans will be wearing replica plastic Nazi
storm-trooper helmets in the colours of their country.
A Dutch firm will this week start production of helmets bearing the flag
of St George (England's flag) and the slogan "No One Likes Us" usually
chanted by Millwall fans.
Florian Van Laar, joint head of the company producing the helmets, said:
"It is meant as a joke. The Germans are not meant to have a sense of
humour, but we Dutch do have one. We are getting calls from all over
Europe, even from those who have not even qualified for the tournament.
After all, the Germans invaded most countries, so people want to wear
these. If they think this is provocation, the only thing I can say is,
now you know how we feel."
Morbach said: "It is not nice to have a sports event compared to war. We
try to use as our theme for this cup, 'It's time to make friends'."
