Victim, Neighbor Fought Over Noise
HONOLULU -- A judge ruled on Tuesday that a man who was killed in a fight with a neighbor had provoked his own death.
Kendall Edmonds apparently killed his neighbor, Michael Gillum, 46, with a single punch. The confrontation started over noise from Edmonds' Pearl City apartment that was keeping Gillum and his daughter awake.
"All Michael wanted was for his daughter to get some sleep so she could get up and go to school," the victim's sister, Patrice Collins, said.
Gillum's 15-year-old daughter talked about how scary it was the night that her father died and how she would never forget how good a dad he was.
"No matter what happens in this court today, by my faith, I know that God will judge you," Gillum's friend, Roy Anoba, said.
Prosecutors wanted Edmonds sentenced to 20 years for manslaughter, but his lawyer pointed out that Gillum was drunk, demanded a fight and even used a racial slur to provoke it.
"For a young, African American man from Alabama, those words are very serious," defense attorney William Bento said.
"I tried my best and I wasn't the bigger man to walk away, and I regret that deeply," Edmonds said.
Judge Karl Sakamoto agreed with the defense that Edmonds didn't mean to kill Gillum. Sakamoto also inferred that Gillum, in a way, caused his own death.
"He used incendiary racial epithets and it had the very result that he intended," Sakamoto said.
Sakamoto gave Edmonds 10 years of probation and 100 days in prison.

Purim 5766 - And Still Going Strong

Some weeks ago, the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while denying that
a Holocaust against the Jews took place during World War II, stated that there
was indeed a "holocaust" that took place in Iran some 2,000 years ago, in
which the Jews killed thousands of people. To this day, it is still celebrated
year in and year out with singing and drinking. He was, of course, talking
about the story of Purim.
Some might indeed mistakenly come to the conclusion that all killing is a bad
thing. In fact, we find even among fellow liberal Jews that the holiday of
Purim can make them blush and feel uncomfortable, for here we find the Jews
celebrating the downfall of their enemies after killing some 75,000 of them.
Now how un-Jewish is that?
There is, then, in this world good and evil, and they are not the same - and
woe to one who mixes up the two. Take, for instance, an example from World War
II, when Germany bombed England and England bombed Germany. Both bombed, but
surely, every sane person knows that one was pure evil and one was fighting
for good.
HaShem has created good as well as evil in this world, and it is our job to
complete creation and eliminate evil. Amalek, and his physical and spiritual
heirs, must ultimately be wiped off the face of the earth, as King David
said: "I hate all those who hate You [HaShem]." King David himself killed
thousands, as the Book of Samuel tells us: "Saul with his hundreds and David
with his thousands." Still, all whom King David killed were looked upon as a
sacrifice before HaShem, for David had eliminated evil from this world,
thereby making it a better place.
Today, we are witnessing, throughout the world and in Israel, the mercy of
fools; those taking pity on the wicked. Such behavior is not good, but evil.
How clearer a signal could HaShem have sent us than the Hamas landslide
victory? Now, it is clear for all to see that there are no innocent bystanders
among the Arabs living here in Israel. Clearly, the great majority of them
want to see Israel destroyed, as was made clear by them in their elections. It
is high time for Israel to act accordingly and stop playing around, claiming
that there are innocents in the area and moderates to work with. Clearly, the
law must be the same for all of them.
Still, we see the nations of the world continuing to explain away the Hamas
victory, even as the Arabs have learned to use the great tool of democracy to
their advantage. The nations are also guilty of taking pity on the wicked, and
surely this will backfire on them in the end, as well. Nation after nation
invites Hamas to visit, and the European Union and the US continue to pour
millions of dollars into the Palestinian Authority, which, of course, will go
towards continuing the Arab terror campaign.
So, it really is too bad that the beloved President Ahmadinejad of Iran does
not understand the difference between one who comes to kill, and one who kills
defending himself, for history repeats itself so often. And if he comes, like
so many before him, against the Jewish State, then he and his people will be
the ones to fall. It is worth recalling the strange last words uttered by one
of the leading Nazis who was hanged after the Nuremberg trials: "Purimfest
1945!"
So take note, cruel and harsh world: Purim is still going strong for the
Jewish people.

SANTA ANA - The inmates had to heat the letter to draw out the message, written in invisible ink. When they did, their orders were clear.
Within hours, prosecutors say, members of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang sneaked into a nearby cellblock and killed two black inmates with handmade shanks as part of an order to "go to war" with blacks.
The deaths are two of the 32 murders and attempted murders detailed by federal prosecutors in a sweeping case against the Aryan Brotherhood, a violent white supremacist prison gang that has infiltrated nearly every federal and state prison since its beginnings in San Quentin in 1964.
Prosecutors hope to dismantle the gang - nicknamed the "Brand" - in a series of trials that together make up what's believed to be the biggest capital murder case in U.S. history. Of the 40 men initially charged, as many as 16 could face the death penalty for crimes that reach back 30 years.
Prosecutors are pursuing the highly organized gang with a racketeering law originally passed to target Mafia leaders - a tactic recently used with some success against other prison gangs in California and Texas.
"We're looking at this huge list of charges, and I'm unaware of any other case that's even close to this," said Dean Steward, attorney for Barry "The Baron" Mills, a lead defendant.
Opening statements in the trial of Mills and three others are scheduled to begin March 14 in federal court in Santa Ana. Mills and another alleged ringleader, Tyler "The Hulk" Bingham, face the death penalty in what could be a nine-month trial.
Four more defendants are set to go on trial in Los Angeles in October; court dates in California are pending for the remaining men. Nineteen of the 40 defendants struck plea bargains, and one has died.
The 140-page indictment against the gang alleges a web of conspiracies to murder fellow inmates who offended gang members, cheated them on drug deals, failed to comply with the orders of leaders or snitched to prison authorities. Prosecutors, who declined to be interviewed, spent six years compiling evidence and relied on informants for much of their case.
Court documents suggest that patient gang members waited months to carry out the violent tasks ordered by their leaders, passing information from prison to prison and member to member using friends and spouses on the outside, corrupt prison guards and notes written with invisible ink.
In one case, for example, members of the Aryan Brotherhood allegedly spent a year planning the murder of Richard Barnes, the father of a fellow gang member who had testified against the gang. Members funneled his address and firearms to someone on the outside, who shot him in the head in 1983, according to court documents.
Mills, who faces a number of charges in the current case, has already been convicted of luring another inmate into a recreation shack at a federal lockup in Atlanta in 1979 with the promise that he would get a new tattoo.
Instead, Mills nearly decapitated the man with a handmade knife - his punishment for cheating the brotherhood on a drug deal.
Mills, now 57, went on to become a founder of a three-member group that prosecutors say ordered and approved murders carried out by gang members or aspiring members. He is currently serving two life terms for the 1979 murder, which is detailed in the indictment as part of the government's racketeering case.
Mills, Bingham and the others going to trial have pleaded not guilty.
Civil rights groups that monitor the Aryan Brotherhood say highly disciplined gang members managed to communicate frequently despite 23 hours a day in solitary confinement. Accused members often acted as their own attorneys and subpoenaed other brotherhood members to testify, allowing them to pass messages in court through hand signals and code words or slip messages into legal files, said Melissa Carr, an expert on the gang with the Anti-Defamation League.
Some gang members write messages to outside helpers using coded alphabets or invisible ink made with their own urine, she said.
Experts say prosecutors will face challenges in their push for death penalties - particularly because nearly all the victims were convicted felons and many defendants are already serving long prison terms.

Director Whit Stillman is featured in the Onion's AV Club with a very nice interview. Apparently, his first film, Metropolitan is now available in a Criterion Edition DVD. For those of you who aren't DVD nerds, a Criterion Edition usually indicates a high quality restoration and transfer to DVD accompanied by a lot of good extras like running commentaries.
Being a big fan of Stillman, and since Metropolitan has been out of print for a while, I'm pretty excited. His films are among the most insightful I've seen. (Of course, I first saw them when I was a pretentious college student, so I could have just been kidding myself that I was catching on to some deeper meaning there. I still like them though.)
I thought this was interesting:

White supremacists fined in Internet hate case
In a landmark decision, a tribunal ruled that two white supremacists were spreading hate when they posted offensive material on their websites about blacks, Jews and other minorities.
The so-called Canadian Human Rights Tribunal on Friday levelled the two men with $13,000 in penalties and ordered them to stop spreading hate.
Richard Warman, who launched the complaint against the pair in Feb. 2002, was awarded $5,000. It's believed to be the first time a Canadian Internet web-hosting service has been found liable for hate messages.
One of the men, Toronto resident Alexan Kulbashian, ran a web-hosting service called Affordable Space.com that carried the websites.
Kulbashian and James Richardson of London, Ont. were also members of the Canadian Ethnic Cleansing Team, as well as the now-defunct www.tricityskins.com.
"The material found on the tri-cityskins.com website is likely to expose persons who are non-Christian or non-Caucasian to hatred or contempt," the 48-page ruling states.
"Black persons and people of the Jewish faith are particularly laid open to ridicule, ill feelings or hostility, creating the right conditions for hatred or contempt against them to flourish.''
Tribunal decision-maker Athanasios Hadjis ordered Kulbashian to pay Warman $5,000 for identifying him in a hate message.
Further, both Kulbashian and Richardson were ordered to pay $1,000 in penalties, and the Canadian Ethnic Cleansing Team and Affordable Space.com were hit with fines of $3,000 each.
Warman told The Canadian Press that he was "ecstatic'' with the decision. "It shows human-rights laws work," Warman said from Ottawa.
Canadian Jewish Congress CEO Bernie Farber, an expert on Internet hate, said Warman had done Canadians a "valuable service."
"This was exactly the kind of case that should come before the Canadian Human Rights Commission,'' Farber told CP.
The websites were shut down after Farber's organization complained to Toronto police about four years ago.

Churchill sculpture sparks uproar
LONDON -- A mental health charity has defended a statue it commissioned
of Sir Winston Churchill in a straitjacket.
The statue has been criticized as "absurd and pathetic" by his grandson,
Tory MP Nicholas Soames.
Charity Rethink commissioned the 9-ft high sculpture, unveiled in Norwich,
to highlight the stigma of mental health.
Rethink said the image of Churchill--who suffered bouts of depression--
was designed to "portray a more positive image of people with mental illness."
Rethink director of campaigns Paul Corry said Churchill was often used by
professional counselors when talking about depression.
"We did not intend the statue to be offensive in any way," he added.
"The message we want to portray is that it is possible to recover from mental
illness and overcome it and be successful--because Churchill is an example
of someone who was able to do that.
"We are not intending to undermine Churchill or denigrate the efforts of
anyone involved in the Second World War in any way whatsoever.
Allen Packwood, director of the Churchill Archives Center, said while he could
understand the reasons for putting up the statue, he disagreed with the
portrayal of Churchill.
"It does highlight the fact that even the most famous individuals, the most
iconic, are human, do suffer from human frailties ... and I think it is quite right
that that does not diminish him, it heightens his achievements," he told BBC
Radio "4's Today" program.
"What I would question is whether his depression was ever really a straitjacket
for him," he added.
He said he did not believe the former prime minister--who liked being in control
of his image and being depicted as strong--would have liked the sculpture.
But Norwich North MP Dr Ian Gibson disagreed, saying Churchill himself
acknowledged his depressive periods.
"He does record that he has bad days and that he was in a straitjacket,"
he told the program.
"I think this illustrates quite positively that Winston Churchill, despite any
problem he may have had with his mental health, was able to carry out his
functions," he said.
Commenting on the statue, Mr. Soames MP said he was sure the mental health
charity behind the project was perfectly "sensible," but the idea of showing
Winston Churchill who suffered from depression wearing a straitjacket was
"appalling and a pity," but would not harm his grandfather's memory.
'Publicity paying off'
Peter Threadkell of the Norwich branch of the Royal British Legion reportedly
told the Daily Express paper it was "disrespectful".
"To show him in this way insults his memory," he said.
Mr. Gibson said he felt the critics has "misinterpreted" the idea behind the
statue.
"I think a lot of people will disagree with Mr. Soames, although I see some
have agreed with him. I think they have misinterpreted what is happening
here," he said.
"The publicity itself is paying off. The campaign is gaining a lot of publicity
from this statue."
The glass fibre and bronze sculpture has been erected in Norwich city center
and will remain until the end of March.

Once upon a time in America, when the Playboy "Interview" was a cultural laurel, Truman Capote used the occasion of his preferment (alongside pictorials on body-painting and "Hollywood Honey Jane Fonda") to warn of a "Jewish literary mafia," a "clique of New York-oriented writers and critics who control much of the literary scene through the influence of...Jewish dominated" publications and who "make or break" careers in letters by bestowing or rewarding attention.
It was March 1968, and Capote was at his apotheosis, having published what would turn out to be his most eminent book, In Cold Blood, in January 1966, and having hosted what would turn out to be his most eminent party, a masked ball for New York City's cultural elite, in December 1966. Robert Maxwell was being investigated for war crimes and was to be
interviewed by police just before he mysteriously drowned 15 years ago.
Revelations that Maxwell, a captain in the British Army, knew he faced a
possible life sentence for murdering an unarmed German civilian in 1945 lend
support to the theory that he took his own life in 1991.
A Metropolitan Police file released to The Independent under the Freedom of
Information Act shows that, weeks before he died, detectives had begun
questioning members of Maxwell's platoon and were preparing a case for the Crown
Prosecution Service.
Maxwell would have been told about the inquiry and knew that, if found
guilty, he would be the first Briton to be prosecuted for war crimes. The War Crimes
Act 1991 was enacted just six months before Maxwell's body was found floating
in the Atlantic on 5 November after disappearing from his yacht, the Lady
Ghislane.
No one has been able to explain how he came to die. But the police file shows
that, by that time, officers had been able to establish the location in
Germany where Maxwell was alleged to have killed an unarmed civilian. The shooting,
which is said to have happened on 2 April 1945, was first disclosed by
Maxwell's authorised biographer, Joe Haines, in 1988. Maxwell is quoted in the book
describing how he tried to capture a German town by threatening the population
with a mortar bombardment, a tactic that had proved successful on a nearby
village hours earlier.
In a letter to his wife, published in the book, Maxwell recounts how he asked
some Germans to fetch the mayor. He ordered the mayor to go back to town and
tell the soldiers defending it to surrender or face destruction. One hour
later the mayor returned, saying the soldiers had agreed to his demands. "But as
soon as we marched off a German tank opened fire on us," Maxwell wrote.
"Luckily, he missed, so I shot the mayor and withdrew."
The Met's file says: "The reported circumstances of the shooting gave rise to
an allegation of War Crimes. To some extent, the reporting of the shooting
incident was confirmed by Mr Maxwell in an interview he gave in 1988 to the
journalist Brian Walden [30th October 1988]."
But the police could do nothing until Parliament had enacted the war crimes
legislation which had been specifically designed to prosecute Nazi war
criminals living in this country.
It was only when a member of the public made a complaint under the new
legislation that an official investigation could begin. Two officers from the Met's
historic war crimes unit began tracing members of his platoon but had been
unable to find a witness to the alleged shooting of the mayor.

We can control the TV, radio, etc. that also influence them. They will be able to play outside without us having to worry about their safety. The women of our community will be able to go outside or walk down the street without having a mud attacking them. You wont see muds walking in the neighborhood. It would be a white pearl in the middle of a mudhole. Undaunted, Miller said he'd file as a Republican and challenge Blunt in the primary.
The GOP joined the Democrats in distancing themselves quickly from Miller's vitriol.
Miller has actually succeeded in doing something we thought impossible. He united Democrats and Republicans in bipartisan opposition to his candidacy. That was a no-brainer.

Today's apparent death of former Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic bares the bloody fangs of the New World Order, a totalitarian construct of the United States and allies to fill in the post Cold War void:
"If we cannot convict you on our lies, we will at least make sure you don't get out alive."
Let us recall that Milosevic was captured -- kidnapped -- by the NWO shock troops in exchange for aid promised to a Serbia recently decimated by NATO bombs to halt a genocide that subsequent investigation proved a lie by the Clinton Administration and dutifully amplified in the lap-dog media.
The initial charges of genocide in Kosovo were so obviously trumped up -- there was the problem of a lack of bodies -- that the Hague kangaroo court was forced to drop that central part of its case. Chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte was herself quoted as saying that no genocide charges were brought against Milosevic, "Because there is no evidence for it."
The court then scrambled to find something else with which to charge Milosevic, all the while Milosevic rotted away in a jail cell convicted of nothing.
Milosevic's real crime in the eyes of the Hague was that he did not do what was expected: confess to all the crimes you can think of, bow to the authority of the court, accept your sentence. How DARE he question the authority of the Hague Tribunal?!? Like their moral and historical forebears the international tribunals are all set up with only one conclusion possible: conviction. Though perhaps the court did not get the conviction they wanted in the Milosevic case, I suppose in their eyes they did get the next best thing.
