Just yesterday, as I was watching the local airheads on "Good Day L.A." while having my morning coffee, devious thoughts entered my mind. On the joo toob was famed vampire novelist Anne Rice being interviewed about her latest book, Christ the Lord, which she has been heavily promoting of late. You see, Ms. Rice, long known for her atheism and fascination with the occult, has suddenly "found Jesus" and stands to make even more millions from her recent conversion to Catholicism. Not only will long-time readers buy her book out of curiosity, but she is bound to attract a whole new audience. Christians who would never dream of reading such "Satanist" works as The Vampire Chronicles will now eagerly line up to buy her latest book. Furthermore, since this is only the first volume in a scheduled trilogy, more big bucks in the future are doubtless assured.
Forgive my cynicism, but I can't help thinking there is more than Christian Love expressed when Ms. Rice says that in the future she will write "only for the Lord." Just judging by the phenomenal success of the "Left Behind" series, the Christian publishing field must be extremely profitable. Tim LeHaye and his cohort churn out these fantasies with machine-like regularity and routinely crack even the best seller list of the New York Times with their rapture gibberish. Not only that, but their B-movie spin-offs have been equally successful. There is, by conservative estimates, a built-in market of some 50 million evangelical or "born again" Christians ready to buy the latest book or to see the latest movie confirming their bizarre beliefs. "Christian" book stores abound throughout the land because, evidently, these folks can't seem to get enough of these repetitive writings about Jesus, especially when they are spiced up with dire apocalyptic prophesies about the "last days."
I thought to myself, "why not cash in on this obvious gold mine?" After all, even my friends who completely disagree with my racial politics tell me I'm a good writer. I try not to let such praise go to my head, but I do sometimes think that there ought to be some way to profit at least modestly from my talents. Unfortunately, there is obviously little money to be made espousing White Nationalism. I could cite names and examples for this, but I don't think it's necessary.
Why not, then, become a Christian writer myself? After all, I am fairly well-versed in the clichés of Christian rhetoric and could probably crank out "inspirational" works as well as most who ply the trade. What's more, I have a good understanding of politics, and the combination of Christian theology and right wing zionist ideology has proven to be a winning one for the likes of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, et. al., not to mention the aforementioned LeHaye.
If I went this route, I would need to create for myself a special niche if I were to be successful enough to stand out from the crowd. I could, for example, specialize in writing anti-Mormon books. Every "Christian" book store I've seen has a special section devoted to denouncing Joseph Smith and "proving" that Mormon theology is at serious odds with the Bible. I've always found this strange, given the fact that evangelical Christians and Mormons believe in so many of the same things, but who am I to argue with their flat assertion that Mormons aren't Christians? I do know enough about Mormonism, moreover, to effortlessly turn out any number of these tracts, especially as a former member who has now "seen the light." I'm afraid, however, that this market may be extremely limited and I would be lucky to earn enough money every month to buy dog food.
But then I realized that with my experience I could really hit the big time. All I'd have to do is to proclaim that Jesus made me repent and reject racism and anti-semitism. I could write an expose of the Neo-Nazi movement, recounting lurid first-person tales about its degenerate leaders. No need for any of it to be true, because the mainstream media would eagerly swallow whatever I fed them. I'd get exposure on Fox News and be interviewed on Larry King Live along with lucrative speaking engagements at colleges arranged for by the ADL. I'd be invited by Christian churches throughout America to give my testimony for Christ, brotherly love, and Israel; always, of course, with a substantial "honorarium" involved. Hallelujah, Praise Jesus! We're in the money now!
But not to worry, my devoted readers, I shall not desert this sinking ship. I will not sell out my deeply held ideals in pursuit of personal gain. On the other hand . . . .

US troops massacre 11 member Iraqi family
Horrific reports are coming out of northern Iraq concerning the massacre of an 11 member Iraqi family by US occupation soldiers. If the preliminary reports are correct, the
incident will make the Abu Ghraib prison tortures seem tame
by comparison.
The Iraqi family victims includes five children and
two women. A senior Iraqi police officer said autopsies on
the bodies showed each had been shot in the head. "El
Universal" newspaper in Mexico City is reporting today that
the massacred family members ranged from a 75 year old
grandmother to a six month old baby.
The massacre occurred yesterday March15 (Ides of
March) in a house in Ishaqi, a town 100 kilometers north of
Baghdad. Photograph showed the bodies of five children and
four women arriving at the Tikrit General Hospital
accompanied by grief-stricken relatives.
Major Ali Ahmad of the Iraqi police said U.S. forces
had landed on the roof of the house in the early hours and
shot the 11 member family that included the five children.
"After they left the house they blew it up," he said.
Another Iraqi police officer , Colonel Farouk Hussein, said
autopsies had been carried out at Tikrit hospital and found
that "all the victims had gunshot wounds to the head. "The
bodies, their hands bound, had been dumped in one room
before the house was destroyed, Hussein said. Police had
found spent American-issue cartridges in the rubble. "It's a
clear and perfect crime without any doubt," he added.
The town administrator, Rasheed Shather, said the citizens of Ishaqi were in total shock. "The whole town went to the funeral. We want the Americans to give us an explanation
for this horrible crime."

terms with a written warning from a U.S. government agency.
But the activist group behind the complaints that led the U.S. Department of
Agriculture to probe the Agriprocessors plant in Postville, Iowa, isn't
satisfied.
A spokesman for Agriprocessors, which received the warning following an
investigation into allegations that kosher slaughter rules - and therefore,
U.S. law - were being violated at the plant, said the company accepted the
probe. "It was fair," Mike Thomas said. "That's the job of the regulator and
we respect it."
But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the animal-rights group that
ignited the controversy in 2004 when it sent an undercover person into the
plant with a video camera, promises not to let the issue rest. The group
vowed to appeal to the U.S. Attorney's Office that declined to prosecute the
case, call on the Agriculture Department to fire investigators who failed to
enforce kosher standards and intensify calls on the Orthodox Union, which
oversees kosher operations at the plant, to allow what PETA calls "legitimate
animal welfare experts" into the plant to monitor the process. "This is the
least the O.U. should be doing if it takes its own claims about kosher being
humane seriously," a PETA spokesman, Bruce Friedrich, said in a e-mail.
The release of the report reignited an issue that created controversy in the
kosher world. Some Jews accused PETA of launching a veiled anti-Semitic
campaign intended to suppress religious freedom, while others saw the gruesome
video that PETA ran on its Web site as evidence that the plant had violated
the humane aspects of kosher slaughter.
In its report, which can be found at www.peta.org, the Agriculture Department
determined that employees at the plant violated kosher principles. The video
obtained by PETA appeared to show cows walking around and looking alive after
the killing presumably was completed, and additional cuts made to the animals'
tracheas to facilitate bleeding before they were rendered "insensible."

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Middle East policy is not in America's national interest and is motivated primarily by the country's pro-Israel lobby, according to a study published yesterday by researchers from Harvard University and the University of Chicago.
Observers in Washington said yesterday that the study was liable to stir up a tempest and spur renewed debate about the function of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee lobby. The Fatah office in Washington distributed the article to an extensive mailing list.
"No lobby has managed to divert U.S. foreign policy as far from what the American national interest would otherwise suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that U.S. and Israeli interests are essentially identical," write the authors of the study.
John J. Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago's political science department and Stephen M. Walt from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government do not present new facts. They rely mainly on an analysis of Israeli and American newspaper reports and studies, along with the findings of the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem.
The study also documents accusations that American supporters of Israel pushed the United States into war with Iraq. It lists senior Bush administration officials who supported the war and are also known to support Israel, such as Paul Wolfowitz, Doug Feith and David Wurmser. The authors say the influence of the pro-Israel lobby is a source of serious concern and write that it has even caused damage to Israel by preventing it from reaching a compromise with its neighbors.

The reality shows proliferate, and the con as just another winning social strategy gets more and more institutionalized. "Black. White." is the latest piece of "reality" garbage; appearing on FX, it cosmetically makes a black family look white, and a white family look black, and sends them all into the world. At night, the two redecorated clans have dinner together and share the experiences they had during the day. What will they think of next? Here's some dialogue:
Bruno (middle-age white guy playing a black guy): So far, I'm kinda waiting for someone to go "Hey, nigger!"
Brian (middle-age black guy playing a white guy): I really don't think that Bruno is getting the black experience.
If that makes you laugh and shake your head over the stupidity of it all, that's exactly the response the show wants to elicit. Like so much else in the United States of Entertainment, "Black. White." defangs reality by making it look ridiculous, bucks up your ego by making other people look harmless and contemptible, and gives viewers the feeling that the only bastion of sanity in a crazy world is the space safely bounded by their four walls. You could argue that comedy in general produces the same effect. But comedy is fiction, and, like all fiction, it leaves reality untouched: Its power lies in its complete availability to your imagination. In "fictional" comedy or drama, you experience an alternative world. A series like "24" is an illusion. "Black. White." is a lie.
So why is it that few, if any, people who write about this stuff ask about the ethics of reality television? When I think of the media, I think of that scene in Woody Allen's Take the Money and Run, in which a bunch of guys who have escaped from a chain gang are still shackled together at the ankles and have to do everything together, rushing this way and then that en masse. So everybody rushed toward James Frey--shocking!--and then to Cheney's weapons mishap--he tried to mislead us about what happened!--and on to the Oscars--would someone please speak truth to Hollywood!--after which they rested as on the seventh day. But amid all this concern about truth and appearance, everyone seems to think it's uncool, and hyper-earnest, and just plain wet-blankety, to question the status of truth and appearance on America's favorite reality TV programs--these emotional snuff-films.
But what does it mean to bring cameras and the premise of a reality show into a situation where one of two deceits is certainly being practiced? Either the director reveals the truth to the bystanders who, unsuspecting, get included in a reality-show situation--in which case the show is lying to its audience--or the director tells these involuntary participants that he's shooting a documentary, etc., in which the show is lying to the unwitting participants. And unlike that Ur-reality program, "Candid Camera," most of the rubes who are being lied to--if in fact they are--presumably never find out that they've been suckered until they see themselves on TV. One way or another, mendacity is fast becoming a legitimate cultural style, partly thanks to reality TV.
Inevitably, the dishonest form of the enterprise shapes its contents. "Black. White." is not a provocative study in secret prejudice, followed by growth and awakening. It's a reinforcement of the stereotypes the show claims it wants to examine and expose. The more radical exposure of the social construction of race would be to show how whites and blacks assimilate each other's music, humor, fashion, gestures. Skin proves spirit by submitting to style. On the other hand, merely "swapping" pigmentation is redundant. You're all recolored up, but you still need a place to go.
As usual, the sorry specimens of humanity who participate in these things conform to the types the producers have laid out for them. It's a freak show. Bruno repeats the world "nigger" every few minutes, and Brian, every few minutes or so, gets incited by the term. When everybody gets together for dinner, they speak exclusively in terms of types: How do black people act in this situation? What do white people say in that situation? These symposia have all the naturalness and spontaneity of a soiree at Stalin's house.
You'll learn, for instance, that whites are more curious than black people. Black people "roll" back and forth when they walk. Slightly. Also, blacks don't have such great posture. They "slouch" when they sit. Since nearly all these quaint, unflattering notions of racial habits come from the very member of the race that comes off unflaterringly--i.e., a black person--there is no subtle revelation of prejudice at these dinner-table conversations. Rather, you get tired, old racial stereotypes, which are given a new twist and made authoritative by being validated by that member of the stereotyped race itself.
Or you get a white guy at a bar telling Brian, who is masquerading as a white bartender, about how important it is to him to keep his town safe and "caucasian." Brian tells us that when he heard this, "I was blown away." Such naiveté. Yet the white customer's unstartling revelation has a peculiar effect. Carroll O'Connor's Archie Bunker on the pathbreaking "All in the Family" discredited racial prejudice by making its indecency as flagrant as O'Connor's performance was outsized. In Archie Bunker's mouth, prejudice was inflated absurdly in order to lay bare the essential absurdity of prejudice. But the disclosure of racial bias at the bar on "Black. White." doesn't treat those ugly sentiments with disrespect. On the contrary, the man's confidence is perversely granted a permanent place in reality because it is presented as being real. It is not exploded or dislodged. There is even something vulnerable about a man tricked into revealing himself in public. It is a kind of entrapment, or illegal wiretap of contraband sentiments. You wonder, too, if the man gave his permission to be exposed as a bigot on national television.
Reality programs like "Black. White." are the marionette plays of our time. Bad-intentioned, mean-spirited marionette plays. Judging by the popularity of these shows, there are great numbers of individuals who hunger to see strings attached to other individuals. At a time when people are ransacking their innards to make a fire sale of private thoughts and emotions, at a time when it seems people will do anything for money or fame, the subjects of these shows have turned themselves into puppets, into the instruments of other people's commercial will. At one point, Brian corrects Bruno, telling him that no one is going to call him a "nigger" because prejudice is further below the surface and more carefully insinuated nowadays--the word, he believes, has been retired as a term of abuse and humiliation.
And yet, minutes later, we hear Brian say: "I think that most white people would love to say 'nigger' in the presence of blacks and not have any repercussions." Obviously, the script for this "unscripted" hour of ordure abruptly changed. If you're one of those people Brian is referring to, you'll enjoy the sudden servitude.

Punishing the Thought Behind the Crime
Did you ever think that the nearly-all-White state of Utah would pass a "hate crime" law? Well, they did - even though "hate crimes" make up only a tiny portion of all crimes committed in the U.S. [1].
"Hate crime" laws are bogus. In fact, those laws originated in the phony, Jewish-built, communist state of the Soviet Union, in which "anti-Semitism" was punishable by death [2].
Those "hate crime" laws don't punish a crime itself. They punish the thought behind the crime. That means that there will be two different jail/prison sentences for a crime: one sentence if the crime was committed for, say, profit, and another sentence if the crime was committed due to "hate" or racial bias. Would America's founders want two sentences for one crime?
By the way, those crimes used to be called "bias crimes." But apparently the word "bias" wasn't strong enough and didn't create enough emotional, Pavlovian-like response in the average citizen for the people who push these laws. So now they are called "hate crimes." The proper wording is key!
Also, do we really need to remind you that most "hate crime" laws in America and Europe were pushed by Jews? [3].

Governor Says "Not A Hate Crime"
Gov. Bob Riley said the fires did not appear to be "any type of conspiracy against organized religion" or the Baptist denomination.
Why does the Governor immediately dismiss any hate crime charges? What is he, the lead investigator? Why is he in such a hurry to exonerate the arsonists? And he pretends that all nine churches are Methodist is a 'coincidence', not a "conspiracy"? And how does he explain the fact that the fires were started near the pulpit? What, that's not a clue? And each and every church a Baptist church? Bypassing all other churches in their path? Not a one of the others hit?
Hmmmm?
Who tells him what to say? Who writes his scripts? What is he afraid of? Why is he so dismissive?
Why do the media refer to it as a "prank" over and over and over and over and over again? A prank? By avowed satanists? And why has the story suddenly disappeared from media reports just a couple of days after capturing these 'pranksters'?
The boys were captured on the 8th, and within 48 hours the story was dropped by all media. Not another word. Would this have been the case if they had burned synagogues?

At Birmingham-Southern College here, where Moseley and DeBusk were students known for their acting talent, the talk Thursday was about what might have been for the two well-liked young men.
Ian Cunningham, 19, a fellow student, said Moseley "charmed everybody. He was the homecoming king of his high school. He was one of the best actors I've ever seen on the stage. Every play I've seen him in, he blew me away."
"Russ is just a goofy, fun-loving guy, almost like a cartoon character," said Jeremy Burgess, 19, DeBusk's roommate. "He's always nice, respectful and hardworking. He studied more than I did."
A feature article about DeBusk and Moseley in this week's edition of The Hilltop News, the campus newspaper, profiles the students and highlights their acting careers. Moseley, "a huge fan of Johnny Cash," and DeBusk, whose "real dream is to become a screenwriter and director," had appeared together in at least three plays and a documentary, the story said.
The article ends: "This could be said of both DeBusk and Moseley. After they are finished here at BSC, they may truly be on the road to stardom."

Forgive my tardiness, but last month The New York Times published an article that compared liberals unfavorably to fundamentalist mobs. The piece appeared on the paper's fun op-ed page, on the occasion of the "cartoon riots" that were provoked by the publication in a conservative Danish newspaper of scornful images of the Prophet--no, that's not accurate. The riots were provoked by Muslim politicians and diplomats for whom the Western blasphemy was an Allah-sent opportunity to divert the attention of various Muslim societies from what ails them. What would modern Arab satrapies do without medieval Muslim masses? A bloodletting, then, followed by brandy and cigars; and the robed zealots in the streets are glad to do the work of the suited cynics in the private planes. Scores of people died in the cartoon riots. It was not the cartoons that killed them; it was their conviction that violence is a variety of cultural criticism. The intensity of their feeling about their faith was all that they (and in their view, anybody else) needed to know in the world.
And there in the Times was Stanley Fish, extolling them precisely for this. How contrarian. Fish is the author of a book called The Trouble With Principle--now there's a danger!--and has made a handsome career as a cheap button-pusher; he is one of those intellectuals who prefers any kind of radicalism to any kind of liberalism. (The flourishing of such intellectuals is itself a great tribute to liberalism.) In this particular prank, the kind of radicalism that Fish preferred was the Islamist kind. He lauded the "strong, insistent form" in which the rioters maintained their convictions. They believed that there are ideas "worth fighting over to the death." This, he declared, "is to the credit of the Muslim protesters and to the discredit of the liberal editors." Liberals, by contrast, believe only in such "abstract" principles as free speech, which makes them contemptibly indifferent to "the content of what is expressed." He adduced as his example of this timidity the culture editor of the Danish newspaper, for whom what seemed to matter was not the substance of what his paper said but its right to say it. In the liberal "religion of letting it all hang out," Fish sneered, "everything (at least in the realm of expression and ideas) is to be permitted, but nothing is to be taken seriously."
This is an ancient slander against liberalism. "I'm liberal," declares a character in one of Frost's poems, and explains: "I mean so altruistically moral / I never take my own side in a quarrel." That is a benign version of the complaint that liberalism is invertebrate, purely procedural, lacking in fervent beliefs about what is true and what is false, what is good and what is evil. There were malign versions as well. Fish's exhilaration at the vitality of the crowd, his contempt for the restraints of reason, his discovery of personal integrity in physical violence--in another time, these were the ejaculations of fascists. Fish's piece has that ni droite, ni gauche quality. It put me in mind of some rhapsodic pages in Among The Thugs, Bill Buford's report on his arousal by the violence of English soccer hooligans: "Violence is one of the most intensely lived experiences and, for those capable of giving themselves over to it, is one of the most intense pleasures.... What was it like for me? An experience of absolute completeness," and "being in a crowd in an act of violence ... [n]othingness is what you find there ... [n]othingness in its beauty, its simplicity, its nihilistic purity," and similar garbage. One is supposed to admire the honesty of such confessions, I suppose. But why should the drama of the confession matter more than the substance of the confession?
It is certainly true, as Fish worries, that a liberal order exasperates certain types of "strongly held faiths." The believers in an open society always have some adjusting to do. Yet not all strongly held faiths are alike. Often the aforesaid adjustments are made, for the sake of principle or social peace. And a faith held so strongly that it acknowledges no legitimacy to other strongly held faiths, so that it seeks to suppress or to destroy them--surely such faiths must not be allowed to hide their depredation behind our toleration. They deserve all the exasperation that we can visit upon them. Moreover, not all strongly held faiths are held for reasons worthy of respect. (I mean intellectual respect. About political respect, there must be no doubt; but political respect is not a promise of intellectual respect.) Usually they are just the unexamined promptings of tribe and tradition. But then Fish is not exercised by the intellectual quality of the bellicose dogmatisms that he wishes upon us. Quite the contrary. What excites Fish about fervent belief is the fervor, not the belief.
For this reason, it is Fish's geeky paean to people who are happy to hurt other people, his anti-liberal envy of muscles, that is perfectly contentless. He recommends the radicalism of the Islamist protesters, but he does not care whether there is no God but Allah or whether Mohammed is His Prophet. The philosophy means nothing to him. He wants only the action. He mocks liberals as editors, but he is himself just a spectator. And he is demanding his thrills. He is living vicariously through the absolutism of others. Those are not the jollies of a democrat.
Liberals are not editors, even if some editors are liberals. And fairness is not lifelessness. And free speech is the beginning of a liberal order, not the end. And rights are not the enemies of passions, and passions are not most stirringly represented by violations of rights. Where does Fish--not to put too fine a point on it, but in this respect he resembles some of our most virulent enemies--get the idea that liberals cannot fight? From the Democrats, perhaps; but that is liberalism's problem, not liberalism's fate. Anyway, Fish is not seeking political satisfaction, he is seeking emotional satisfaction in politics. And the history of emotionally satisfying politics is often a tale of crimes and abuses. The refusal to burn a book or a flag or a person, the renunciation of brutality in political expression, is not a sign of infirmity of purpose. Not at all. I wish to assure Fish, by example perhaps, that liberals can be--in the name of Kant, in the name of Jefferson, in the name of Mill--assholes.

As a thought experiment, he placed himself inside the mind of a Palestinian spymaster to provide a cold assessment of the challenges faced by the new Hamas-led government. The following is a memo to Ismail Haniyeh, the Palestinian prime minister.
Mr. Prime Minister:
Your rise to power has been meteoric and unprecedented. Less than 20 years after Sheik Ahmed Yassin founded Hamas--and after six years of bloody confrontation with the Israelis, during which many promising leaders perished in action--Hamas has scored a brilliant political triumph. You are now the leader of the Palestinian people, and I am obliged to provide you with an assessment of your prospects.
Let's begin with the international scene and some of the best news. The immediate steps taken by the Israelis and Americans to isolate Hamas have backfired. President Vladimir Putin of Russia invited your representatives to his capital--and that's before your government met any of the conditions imposed by the Quartet (the United States, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations). The attempt to cast us as pariahs is disintegrating. We have already received expressions of support from key countries in the region, notably Iran. And even states like Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan, which have reservations about your victory, have gingerly accepted the election results. (Of course, we would wish for a more enthusiastic reception from the Saudis.) Somewhat more surprisingly, the Europeans and even the Americans have evinced great pragmatism in their dealings with us, allowing us the funds needed to sustain the lives of our citizenry. All in all, Hamas has topped 19 years of struggle with internal victory and a string of notable diplomatic successes within the space of a very few weeks.
But, in my capacity as intelligence chief, I am duty-bound to identify the threats to the Palestinian cause and to your leadership. Indeed, just as the prospects have never been so good, the threats have never been greater--they are, to be blunt, existential.
You must now define your basic aims and policies, both internally and externally. How will you govern? Who will you bring into the fold? And who will you leave out in the cold? Every option has a price tag, as you know. If you wish to forge an alliance with Fatah, you will have to give it a much larger piece of the pie. And, if you alienate the outgoing leadership, you must expect that it will not accept its political demise gracefully. This brings me to a far larger concern: the armed groups--Fatah's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine--in our midst. Since you are now the government, you must determine their fate. I don't believe that you can disarm them. That is, I assume that you will not wish to initiate a fitna, a bloody showdown with our Palestinian brethren. But you will still have to find a method of disciplining these groups. You will not wish to allow any further descent into anarchy, the very lawlessness that the Palestinian people sought to reject by voting you into office. And, needless to say, the Israelis would view such chaos as a pretext for moving into Palestine once again.
Then we arrive at the question of corruption. More than any other issue, the promise of clean government propelled you into office. I recommend that you punish at least a few representative figures from the previous Fatah regime, perhaps more. For obvious reasons, I do not wish to mention names. You know them all. And I'm sure that I don't need to emphasize this point, but the high expectations of the population will prove exceptionally difficult to manage. They don't just expect you to herald an era free of graft and malfeasance, but also to improve quality of life, maintain internal cohesion, and provide a modicum of domestic tranquility. Women, in particular, expect an enlightened era in which the government squares the spirit of Islam with recognition of some attributes of modernity. You will find that Palestinian women are more assertive than ever.
I've already described some good news on the international front. But our foreign relations will require their own delicacy. Your success requires the support of the current regimes in Jordan and Egypt, where the sister movements of the Muslim Brotherhood are gaining encouragement from your political triumph. If the leaders in Cairo and Amman feel that your policies undermine their interests, they will not hesitate to act against you or to leave you twisting in the wind. I must remind you that, at the height of the intifada, in March and April 2002, President Yasir Arafat appealed to Cairo and Amman to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel, which was then driving into every West Bank hamlet sowing death and destruction. Both capitals frostily turned Arafat down because their strategic relationship with Israel transcended their solidarity with Palestine. Even Damascus and Tehran (yes, Tehran), didn't lift a finger for us in that desperate hour. If Bashar Assad and Ayatollah Khameini had ordered the firing of Hezbollah rockets in Lebanon, they could have knocked the Israelis seriously off balance. But all we received from these supposedly radical capitals were hot words and stunning operational silence. I would advise we realistically estimate the support that we might obtain in the region--particularly if we maintain Hamas's guiding principles and policies.
Let me add another caveat about the surprisingly warm reception the new government has received abroad.Photo by Ahmad Khateib/Newscom That is, the Russians and Turks have hardly embraced you for the purest of motives. If I read their statements correctly, they believe that they can domesticate and defang Hamas with their kindness. They may also be driven by a more ephemeral goal: to help promote their own relationship with Tehran. At the same time that your colleague Khaled Mashal and his group visited Moscow, the Russians were engaged in a last-minute effort to strike a deal with the Iranians to curtail their nuclear program. Let me say, if the Russian negotiations with Iran fail, you will find Moscow backing the American position and not the Iranian one. This is a very fundamental Russian instinct that all players in the region have learned in the 15 years since the Soviet Union's fall. Please do not base any of your strategy solely on reports you might receive from brother Mashal.
The United States, Mr. Prime Minister, has encountered its share of recent difficulties in the Middle East. Its interests in the region are many and complex. They are great friends and allies of Israel, but, on occasion, they have been known to come down very hard on Israeli governments, including that of Ariel Sharon. However, we must understand that the Americans have decided that the destiny of the entire Western world hinges on major changes in the Middle East, including regime change. They have committed their forces to battle in Afghanistan and in Iraq, and they will do this wherever the necessity arises. They will not quit halfway, because they believe the fate of their civilization depends on defeating so-called "international Islamic terrorism." They will therefore move to crush any obstacle in their path. The United States is well-aware that you are the first national faction of the Muslim Brotherhood in the entire region to reach power. You are a precedent, a first example, and, if you play it wrong--if you act in a way that seriously jeopardizes the allies of Washington--the United States will permit you to go down to a resounding armed and political defeat. Just as you are the first victor, you are the most vulnerable. And, at the end of the day, you will find the whole of Europe, Russia, Japan, India, Pakistan, the United Nations, and--believe me, Mr. Prime Minister--Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan confronting you.
ow, Mr. Prime Minister, I'm obliged to turn to a discussion of our enemy. As your intelligence officer, I must give you an honest assessment of the Israelis, however unpleasant some of it might be. In my initial description of events, I highlighted Hamas's achievements during the last 20-odd years. The Israelis have also not done too badly, despite their withdrawal from Gaza and locales in the northern West Bank. They have the best-trained, best-equipped, and most experienced military machine in the Middle East. They have a thriving economy, a prosperous business and industrial community, and a vibrant culture. The million-odd Arab citizens of Israel enjoy the highest standard of living of any Arab community in the region. They support us in some ways, but they balk at the mere mention of their joining the Palestinian Authority.
I think, as you surely agree, that our resistance to occupation propelled the Israelis to realize the limits of their power. But does Sharon's policy of unilateral disengagement prove that we should continue armed struggle? You must accept that a decision to continue resistance will force you to abandon your domestic agenda. The two are incompatible. Hamas's domestic agenda necessitates a period of calm. To improve the quality of life and develop our social, economic, and political institutions, we need calm and freedom of passage inside and between the West Bank and Gaza. We need the Israelis to remove their endless roadblocks on every artery and at every key junction. Therefore, we cannot even begin to implement our plans for Palestine without Israeli cooperation and understanding.
The Israeli position on the Palestinian issue has evolved over recent years in surprising directions, some inconceivable only a short while ago. As you know from your own time in Israeli jails, the Israelis have often scorned and belittled the Palestinians. Just look at the way they have treated our president, Mahmoud Abbas, in their public pronouncements. Nor did the Israelis take Arafat's threats to drive the Jews into the sea much more seriously. They do, however, take you and the Hamas movement seriously; they look upon you as a very real threat, and they have been parsing your every statement with a fine comb to understand your intentions.
Right now, the Israelis don't know how to react to your government. It is, of course, the Israeli campaign season. Every politician has the daily opportunity to make foolish statements. And they have done us a huge favor by demanding that Hamas recognize Israel. Imagine: Israel, with all its economic and military might, in the waiting room, anxiously awaiting word that you have bestowed recognition upon them! Well, you took good rhetorical advantage of this situation by roundly retorting that you would not recognize them. But, as I have argued, a change in the Israeli mindset is coming. After their election, I believe they will realize that they do not need us to recognize them; that we need them to recognize us. They will wake up after their election and realize that they can still control every aspect of life in the Palestinian territories and that they can destroy your domestic agenda without starving the Palestinian population. If they conclude that your government's ties to the Iranians are meaningful, they will not wait for this alliance to flourish and prosper. They will see your government as the extension of President Ahmadinejad, who has openly stated his aim to destroy Israel. Once they conclude that we have teamed up with such a monumental threat to Israel, they will conclude the worst about your intentions and will move with all their power to remove Hamas from the scene. And they will receive international and regional support for this mission. You can only avoid this, I must conclude, by beginning to come to terms with Israel.
There are three other points that I hope you will keep in mind. After the Oslo accords of 1993, Israel allowed the Palestinian leaders residing in the Diaspora to assume power, leaving the local leadership to play a secondary role. In the final analysis, this did not serve us well. We must avoid repeating this mistake. The likes of Mashal, who spent his exile in Damascus, should not be catapulted into authority. Secondly, pundits and politicians have made so many pronouncements about Hamas's future plans that everybody, even important players in your government, are confused about your intentions. Please use your authority to stop this unnecessary stream of words. Finally, as your intelligence chief, I must caution you to keep your distance from Al Qaeda and their operatives and policies. If you do not do this, the Palestinians will become the outlaws of the Middle East. This will spell certain disaster for us.
So, Mr. Prime Minister, you have the destiny of the nation in your hands, and you will have to make your choice between options. It is not for me to suggest to you which option to take. So much now depends on you, Mr. Prime Minister. The life and, God forbid, death, of the Palestinian people is now passing into your hands.

Hundreds of dead poultry raise bird flu fears in Israel
Hundreds of poultry were found dead in a kibbutz in southern Israel
raising fears of the first outbreak of deadly bird flu in the Jewish
state.
"We have found hundreds of dead poultry and other sick birds on a
kibbutz in the south of Israel, which makes us worried about the
appearance of the bird flu virus," one agriculture ministry official
told AFP.
"The initial tests indicated it was bird flu although these were not
the final results and everything is still being tested in the
laboratories", another official said.
Dozens of dead chickens were also found in communities close to the
Ein Hashlosha kibbutz in the Negev desert east of the Gaza border, the
website of the Haaretz daily reported.
Both the kibbutz and the adjacent communities were sealed off by the
agricultural ministry, the website said.
Israel imposed a ban on all meat imports from the Gaza Strip on
February 17 following the discovery of the deadly H5N1 strain of the
bird flu virus in Egypt.
The outbreak of bird flu in Egypt on Israel's southern border saw
flocks destroyed and transport restrictions imposed to stem the spread
of a disease costing the industry around 1.7 million dollars a day.

It is clear that Judy Andreas' article entitled, "The Word 'Jewish' Does not Begin with Z" (12-30-05) is in response to her "imaginings" of what I said when I was a guest on Jeff Rense's program on Wednesday, December 28, 2005. It most certainly is not based on fact.
Rarely do I have the time to get into a debate with people on these issues, particularly with those who are careless and irresponsible with the facts, as it usually creates more heat than light. In most instances, I prefer just to ignore the brickbats, slurs and barbs that are tossed my way, and instead to continue to tell TRUTH, rather than to debate with someone who has deliberately attempted to damage my reputation and credibility.
But when a journalist or columnist plays fast and loose with the truth, I have a duty to respond.
Because Judy Andreas' very own recent writings CONTRADICT what she says in her essay (see below) to which I am responding, it is important to bring this to the attention of the reader of Jeff Rense's website as well as the listener's of Jeff Rense's radio program and others who are interested.
And, because her article has been posted on Jeff Rense's web site in a most prominent position, I feel that I have the obligation to Set The Record Straight.
But, before we begin, I would like to point out a few things:
Often the term anti-semitism is tossed around by Jews as casually as a short-order cook slinging hash. It seems that non-Jews, like me, are forbidden to say things about Jews that Jews are allowed to say about each other. In Jewish newspapers and periodicals, Jews brag that the Jews OWN and RUN Hollywood, AND the television networks, AND Wall Street, etc. But let a non-Jew mention any of these facts, and the Jewish organizations as well as many Jewish individuals begin frothing like a rabid dog. Immediately the crying towel of victim-hood is yanked from its ever-ready conveniently-placed pocket, and the "dobbining" and the "oy-veys" begin. "We've suffered more than anyone!" "You're persecuting us (by telling the truth!)" "No one should be allowed to say anything bad about us (even if it's true!)" and finally, the eternal slogan of the Jewish culture and religion which is "NEVER FORGET!"
