major boulevard in protest of the proposed anti-immigrant

of this hour, from three high schools in south Los Angeles.
The high schools involved are Huntington Park, Jordan and
South Gate High Schools. It is an incredible sight as the
students march along State Boulevard with hundreds of police
squad cars in close proximity. This impromptu demonstration
by youths is taking place one day before a massive march and
rally is to take place in downtown Los Angeles.

Abramoff May Be Subpoenaed in Slaying Case

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
A judge has approved subpoenas for former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and an ex-business partner to answer questions about the mob-style slaying of the owner of a gambling fleet they bought.
Abramoff and Adam Kidan have insisted, through their attorneys, that they know nothing about the slaying of Konstantinos "Gus" Boulis, who was ambushed in his car by a gunman in Fort Lauderdale a few months after the pair bought SunCruz Casinos from him.
A lawyer for Anthony "Big Tony" Moscatiello, one of three men charged in the 2001 slaying, wants to question Abramoff and Kidan, according to court documents. Circuit Judge Michael Kaplan approved the request Thursday, but the subpoenas had not been issued by Friday morning.
The SunCruz purchase is "at the heart" of the murder case, Moscatiello attorney Dave Bogenschutz said in court papers.
Abramoff and Kidan are not charged in the slaying but are scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in federal court after pleading guilty earlier this year to fraud charges stemming from the purchase. Their lawyers did not return telephone calls or e-mails seeking comment Friday.
Abramoff, once a prominent Republican lobbyist and political fundraiser, has also pleaded guilty to federal charges in a Washington corruption investigation that threatens several powerful members of Congress and their staff members.
As part of their federal plea deals, Abramoff and Kidan are required to cooperate with prosecutors in any state or federal investigation.
Moscatiello, 67, allegedly has ties to New York's Gambino crime family and worked as a consultant for Kidan at SunCruz.
Kidan paid companies linked to Moscatiello about $145,000 while he ran SunCruz. Prosecutors have said they believe Boulis was slain in a battle for control of the gambling fleet out of concern that those payments might dry up.
Moscatiello is charged along with Anthony "Little Tony" Ferrari, 49, and 28-year-old James "Pudgy" Fiorillo in the Boulis killing. All three have pleaded not guilty and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Investigators have testified that records show that cell phones belonging to Ferrari and Fiorillo were within 500 feet of the Boulis murder scene moments after the killing and that one was used to call Moscatiello.
Kaplan was scheduled to hear testimony Friday on a motion by Moscatiello and Fiorillo claiming the prosecution's case isn't strong enough to warrant keeping them in custody without bail. Ferrari has not joined in that motion.
Abramoff and Kidan face prison sentences of just more than seven years in the Florida fraud case. They admitted fabricating a fake wire transfer to make it appear they were putting a sizable chunk of their own money into the $147.5 million purchase of the gambling fleet.

A toy rabbit decorating the entrance of the St. Paul City Council offices went hop-hop-hoppin' on down the bunny trail Wednesday after the city's human rights director said non-Christians might be offended by it.
The decorations — including the stuffed rabbit, Easter eggs and a handcrafted sign saying "Happy Easter," but nothing depicting the biblical account of Christ's death and resurrection — were put up this week in the office of the City Council by a council secretary.
It was not the first holiday decoration ever to go up in the building, but City Hall observers believe it is the first one to come down out of concerns for religious sensitivity.
"I sent an e-mail that Easter is viewed as a Christian holiday and advised that it be taken down," said Tyrone Terrill, the city's human rights director. "It wasn't a big deal."

People pay a lot more for housing than they used
to, largely because they buy a lot more house. But, who was ever really
made happier by a bigger house? Average house sizes have doubled since the
1950s. Almost everyone now has a formal dining room he doesn't use, and
lonely extra bedrooms for non-existent guests.
We are not ones to cast stones, for we have our own enormous pile of glass
in France. Most of our rooms are seldom used. In fact, there are bedrooms
that haven't been entered for years. For all we know, the desiccated body
of the last weekend guest is still there, lying in bed and waiting for a
wake-up call. The main living room is used as a passageway; it might as
well not be there. The family is afraid to go up in the attic; we hear
strange sounds at night. We wonder what is going on up there. A tribe of
gypsies could live up there; we would never know. All we get from this
space is the expense of heating it to keep the pipes from bursting, and
keeping it up.
Do you really need to spend a lot of money on a house? Far away and long,
long ago - long enough for the statue of limitations to have run out - we
decided to build an experimental house with our own two hands. We were
young, strong, and sure we had a better idea than any that had come along
in thousands of years of vernacular architecture.
The state of West Virginia was less sure; neither its building codes nor
its zoning regulations would permit it. So, we sited the place in the
woods where no one would see it, and we built it anyway. We tied rebar and
wire mesh together to make a cage. Then we sprayed it with gunite, and
covered the inside with plaster. Dirt was heaped up around, so that the
place almost disappeared completely, but leaving open a large section
facing the south. This was covered with glass, sloping down to the ground.
The total cost: less than $20,000.
"Interesting..." was Elizabeth's judgment on the greatest achievement of
her husband's life. But she didn't want to live there. It did not accord
with her idea of what a house should be, though your author was perfectly
delighted with it. It was like no house he had ever seen. One great
feature was that it needed almost no heat since the glass wall acted as a
heat absorber, which was protected in summer by leafy, overhanging tree
limbs.
Maria noticed the drawbacks: "Eeewww...there are bugs in it." And so,
after a brief spell, the family abandoned the experiment and returned to
more conventional quarters. The house is still there; it needs no
maintenance, no heat and no attention. The last we heard it had been
rented to a man who has been happy there for many years.

Company to pay $1 million to settle racial lawsuit
A Montgomery County company has agreed to pay $1 million to a man who accused his fellow employees of choking him with a noose in 2002.
Charles HIckman says he's still haunted by the memories.
Charles Hickman, a black man, said while he worked at Commercial Coating Service Inc., his white coworkers subjected him to racial slurs and allegedly tied a noose around his neck in a company bathroom.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Coalition sued the company, which is under new ownership and is now known as Commercial Coating Service International Limited.
“Without a doubt, in the 16 years that I’ve been practicing, this is the worst case of discrimination I’ve ever seen, and it was very difficult to believe that this sort of thing was going on,” EEOC senior attorney Rudy Sustaita said.
In its lawsuit, the EEOC said the company did not stop its employees, including its managers, from harassing Hickman on the basis of his race.
Hickman said he's still haunted by the memories.
"I've been going through a lot of difficult stuff trying to put in my mind what happened to me. I still haven't been able to get over it," Hickman said. "It is still there. I'm still scared."
“In addition to being choked with a hangman’s noose, Mr. Hickman was called the N-word and a monkey,” EEOC attorney Jim Sacher said.
