Gangs are here. They're getting bigger, and they're becoming more violent, authorities said yesterday.
That stark message set the tone for a forum about gang activity in Forsyth County and its municipalities.
About 70 people crammed into a conference room at the Public Safety Center downtown to attend the meeting. Local law-enforcement agencies were represented, as were state and federal authorities, local prosecutors, school officials and community groups.
Pat Norris, Winston-Salem's police chief, said that 85 gang members have been identified, or "validated," by police. That's up from the 68 identified in a federal study that was done in the fall.
They belong to such gangs as Aryan Nation, 18th Street and the Latin Kings, police said. More than half, or 57 percent, are Hispanic, 21 percent are black and 20 percent are white. Asians, Indians and other minority groups make up the remainder.

NEW YORK -- A fascist regime plans to host the Olympic Games. Critics call for a boycott, but the Games come off as planned. And on the field of world opinion, the host scores an enormous victory.
Berlin in 1936? No, Beijing in 2008.
Now that the Winter Olympics are over, all eyes will soon turn to the Summer Olympics. And that's just what the Chinese want. Like the Germans of the '30s, they will use the Olympics to showcase their economy _ and hide their repressive behavior.
But the rest of us don't have to help. Lest we repeat the errors of 1936, the United States should lead a boycott of the 2008 Olympics. Anything less will give the Chinese the same kind of propaganda boost that the Nazis enjoyed.
If you don't believe me, go rent Leni Riefenstahl's prize-winning documentary, "Olympia." Released on Adolf Hitler's birthday in 1938, two years after the Berlin Olympics, the film shows the Games _ and the Germans _ in all their glory: the enormous main stadium, expanded to hold 110,000 spectators; the Olympic Village, boasting 100 buildings and 387 dining halls; the pageantry of the Olympische Jugend ("Olympic Youth"), who wowed audiences with their festive dances.
Hitler was no great fan of sport, fearing that athletic competition would elevate the individual over the all-powerful state. But he recognized the enormous potential of the Olympics to burnish Germany's international standing _ which needed all the help it could get. As early as 1933, a New York Times editorial had suggested that the Nazis' "race doctrine" contradicted the spirit of peace, equality and fair play at the heart of the Olympics.
So Hitler issued strict orders: No racism at this Olympics. Defenders of the decision to hold the Games in Berlin often point to African-American track champion Jesse Owens, whose four gold medals undermined Nazi racial ideology.
According to one well-worn myth, a deflated Hitler refused to shake hands with Owens after the runner had destroyed the Third Reich's pretensions of "Aryan" superiority.
But the truth is almost exactly the opposite. Rather than challenging Nazi racism, the triumphs of Owens and other black athletes let the Germans hide it.
"The racial point of view should not in any form be a part of the discussion of the athletic results," the German Ministry of Propaganda warned. "Special care should be exercised not to offend Negro athletes." Indeed, the ministry reprimanded one newspaper after it took a potshot at America's "black auxiliaries." Hitler refused to pare footage of Owens and other black stars from Riefenstahl's film, rejecting suggestions that the documentary was too "positive" toward African-Americans.
Fast-forward to Beijing in 2008, when we can expect China's dictators to disguise their cruelties in a colorful haze of artistic and technological wizardry.
To be fair, the Chinese leaders have never demonstrated the genocidal mentality or the global ambitions of Nazi Germany. And nominally, of course, China remains a "communist" nation. But make no mistake: It's also a fascist one.
According to my American Heritage dictionary, fascism is marked by four characteristics: centralization of authority under a dictator; stringent socio-economic controls; suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship; and a policy of belligerent nationalism. The Chinese regime exhibits all four.
This government welcomes private business, but subjects it to the strict regulation of large state cartels. It routinely whips citizens into furious protests against foreign "spies" and "interlopers," allegedly poised to strike at any moment. Most of all, it carefully monitors all communication _ including the Internet _ for the smallest signs of dissent. Critics of the regime often find themselves out of work, or laboring in prison camps. Or dead.
Why should we help this brutal state by participating in its cynical Olympic spectacle? Why not sit this one out?
Back in 1936, we almost did. According to one poll, 43 percent of Americans favored a boycott of the Berlin Games. Boycott supporters included the Catholic War Veterans; the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith; Al Smith, the Democrats' 1928 presidential nominee; and the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr.
New York's largest black newspaper, The Amsterdam News, also backed a boycott.
But other African-American periodicals said the Games should go on, to give black athletes the chance to compete.
Eventually, of course, the United States Olympic Committee voted to participate in the Berlin Games.
Americans attended every Olympics until the Moscow Games, of 1980, which they boycotted to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Sixty-two countries joined the boycott, including _ you guessed it _ the People's Republic of China.
So spare me the anguished retort about "politicizing" the Olympics. The Olympics have always been political. And no one understands that better than the Chinese leaders, who are counting on the Games to advertise their achievements _ and mask their misdeeds.
The only question is whether the rest of the world will play along.

GIVEN the unstaunchable haemorrhage of books about Nazi Germany it is surprising that this should be the first in English devoted exclusively to the Ahnenerbe, the ancestral heritage branch of the SS. Canadian historian Michael Kater's exhaustive study of 1974 was written in German and has not been translated - though it has been liberally ripped off. The Ahnenerbe's opportunistic racial scientists, dodgy ethnographers and wishful genealogists populate countless works on Himmler's occultism, the Thule Society and the esoteric dungeons of Nazism. Its plundering archaeologists are Indiana Jones's rivals.
Despite this, Heather Pringle, another Canadian and a scientific journalist, writes in the presumption that this bizarre, ultimately murderous organisation is virtually unknown.
Nor does she show much faith in her readers. She explains, for instance, that ochre is a red mineral pigment. Then there are her novelettish flourishes, local colour daubed in the manner of Pierre Loti, like trite essays in human interest: "Almost certainly the genial priest rolled and lit a crumbling cigarette - he was seldom to be seen without one".
These are blemishes, mere irritants. They do not detract from the substance of a work which is a thorough and depressing chronicle of academe's ignominiously wilful self-betrayal in the service of a regime which had no respect for learning but sought plausible foundations and excuses for its programme. Adolf Hitler, however, was dismissive of it. He did not require excuses.
Heinrich Himmler, until the last months of the war Hitler's most loyal servant, was more fastidious. Encouraged by Walther Darré he set up the Ahnenerbe in 1935. Its intention - and all its expeditions and projects were to the same end - was to establish the historical and prehistorical primacy of the Nordic or Aryan race and the inferiority of Jewry. Had the consequences not been so monstrous this endeavour's procedures would, properly, be regarded as farcical and its personae as clowns. [The nazis are the only people on earth or in history abused freely. This is a sign there's something to them and their work, as newspapers are notoriously full of shit, especially those written in fear of jews.]
Darré, who was born in Argentina, had developed an enthusiasm for eugenics as a schoolboy in Wimbledon and was convinced that humans might be bred according to the principles of a stud book.
For an organisation devoted to ultra-nationalism the Ahnenerbe was signally cosmopolitan. Finland, the Netherlands, France and Sweden were also represented among its ranks of runologists, musicologists, philologists and folklorists.
They were not in the least hampered by the scorn of mainstream European researchers; or by the seemingly insurmountable problem that Aryanism was an English taxonomical whim of the late 18th century; or by Himmler's belief that he was the reincarnation of a mediaeval king whose grave he had moved to a more propitious site; or by any of the lesser metempsychotics around the Reichsführer; or by the collective acceptance of Horbiger's World Ice Theory; or by evidence-free New Ageism; or by the belief that Thor was once a living person with a hammer.
The Ahnenerbe's renegade scientists measured skulls in Tibet, vandalised tumuli across Europe, attended pagan ceremonies on the far Baltic shore and sought Nordic remains in the Andes, although, as everyone knows, the master race originated at the North Pole.
When the desired evidence was not forthcoming it could be manufactured at the Allach pottery factory. There was also a certain amount of espionage and informal diplomacy to be carried out while on expeditions: notably in the Middle East, where Muslim opposition to Jewish occupation could usefully be exploited. Infamously, the Mufti of Jerusalem subsequently raised an SS battalion and Nasser's Egypt was as uninquisitive as Argentina about the former careers of its German immigrants.
All pasts are to a degree invention. Those contrived by the Ahnenerbe's "scholars" had a genocidal purpose. It was in the interests of "research" and "racial hygiene" that the most terrible experiments were conducted in the camps under the direction of doctors, who had lost sight of Hippocratic probity and embraced the inverted morality of Himmler - a man of a little learning, who, as a struggling chicken farmer, had come to believe in something called biological pest control. The lesson of the Ahnenerbe is that once we cease to believe in nothing we will believe in anything.

Triumph of the Will
"Triumph of the Will," by Leni Riefenstahl.
Last week, Warner Home Video brought out a superb set of Busby Berkeley musicals from the 1930's; this week, Synapse Films is re-releasing in a slightly upgraded version its edition of Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will," by far the most notorious Nazi propaganda film. The coincidence is too suggestive to ignore. Ever since Susan Sontag linked Riefenstahl's Nazi "documentaries" (the films were, in fact, as carefully staged as any Hollywood feature) with their geometrically arranged goose-stepping soldiers to the extravagant fantasies of Berkeley's mammoth dance numbers, many critics have assumed a kinship between the filmmakers.
Berkeley's abstract musical numbers, with their own geometric patterns and tendency to absorb individuals into standardized, idealized groups, seem to apply the characteristics Sontag listed in her essay "Fascinating Fascism": situations of control, submissive behavior, endurance of pain, domination through pageantry, turning people into things, multiplications and "orgiastic transactions between mighty forces and their puppets." Rather than smartly tailored military uniforms, Berkeley placed his performers in scanty costumes that emphasized the symmetry of legs and bosoms; the uniform platinum wigs that many of his chorines wore invite comparison with the caps and helmets of Hitler's massed forces at the Nuremberg rallies filmed by Riefenstahl in 1934 (filmed one year after Berkeley's best film for Warner Brothers, "Footlight Parade").
The resemblances are striking: "Triumph of the Will" is, effectively, a series of extravagantly staged production numbers played out on massive sets designed by Albert Speer and choreographed according to Speer's instructions, all designed to be observed, not by the participant in the mass party rally, but by Riefenstahl's cameras. Certainly there was something in the air, and not just in Nazi Germany, that drove people to find a sense of strength and safety in numbers, after the economic individualism of the 1920's culminated in the stock market crash and the Depression.
But the distinctions ultimately override the similarities. Berkeley's favorite element, played out so beautifully in the "By a Waterfall" number in "Footlight Parade," was water, with all of its flowing, gushing, pooling connotations of sexuality and childbirth. Men are in the minority in Berkeley's numbers, often appearing as wide-eyed tenors (Dick Powell, before his tough-guy image of the 1940's), leering oldsters (Guy Kibbee, Hugh Herbert) or sexually precocious infants (played by the dwarf actor Billy Barty). Women are Berkeley's subject — objectified, certainly, but still imbued with life force and sexual allure.
Men, of course, are Riefenstahl's subject — the Aryan gods observed, in strikingly homoerotic imagery, as they bathe at their campsites and prepare for a big day of rallies and regimentation. And there are their more modestly proportioned masters: Hitler, Goebbels, Himmler and the rest of the party elite, who exercise their will over the masses with a crook of the finger or a wave of the hand. Riefenstahl's favorite element, emphasized again and again in "Triumph" (particularly in the visually stunning scenes of the night rallies) was fire: fire blazing in giant cauldrons, fire carried by burning torches as the troops go through their midnight maneuvers. If Berkeley is Eros, Riefenstahl is Thanatos: the death instinct played out as a mechanical spectacle of discipline and dehumanizing symmetry.
The Synapse edition of "Triumph of the Will" comes from an excellent 35-millimeter fine-grain print and features a sustained commentary track by the historian Anthony Santoro, who identifies many of the minor players Riefenstahl glosses over while providing a necessary historical (and occasionally moral) context for the spectacle. A Riefenstahl short, "Day of Freedom," has been included as an extra. $34.95, not rated.
The Children Are Watching Us
World War II was still going well for the Italians in 1942 while Vittorio De Sica was filming "The Children Are Watching Us," a family melodrama centered on a small child, Prico (Luciano De Ambrosis), who becomes a mute witness to the degeneration of his parents' marriage. Like many movies made in Italy and Germany during the war, the conflict is not mentioned, and life seems to be going on as it always did, with no visible deprivations and the occasional trip to the seashore. But the film was not released until after the Allied invasion. At that point the film could be appreciated, in the words of Carlo Lizzani as reported by Stuart Klawans in his essay for the Criterion DVD edition of the film, "as a 'testimony of truth' which stripped away the rhetoric and 'false morality' of Fascism by looking at things through a child's eyes."
It is, in truth, hard to find a political undercurrent in "The Children Are Watching Us." That's something that would emerge with De Sica's later collaborations with the screenwriter Cesare Zavattini (only one of six writers credited on "Children"), the 1946 "Shoeshine" and the 1948 "Bicycle Thief." The film is an exercise in almost pure pathos, structured as a series of abandonments centered on the silently suffering child, who often looks into the camera with the large, wet eyes one associates with sad clown paintings. But the sentimentality that would sink the later De Sica, in films like "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" and "Sunflower" (both 1970), has not yet overrun his work. The parents are cold, icy figures, and even the servants who in many Italian films would provide a dose of working-class love to the floundering boy are portrayed as envious and unreliable.
This fine transfer from the Criterion Collection highlights, in its excellent contrast and sharp resolution, the great stylistic contribution of De Sica's early work — the rediscovery of deep-focus staging, just as it was being revived in the United States by directors like Orson Welles, William Wyler and Alfred Hitchcock. Could De Sica have seen "Citizen Kane" (1941) despite the wartime restrictions? It is striking in any case how filmmakers, separated by a war and an ocean, began working simultaneously on ideas that had lain fallow since the end of the silent era (while Kenji Mizoguchi, in Japan, had never abandoned the method). Does form trump borders that content cannot cross? $29.95, not rated.

Did you know that you cannot legally own a gun if you have been convicted of certain misdemeanor crimes? If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor in which you could have - repeat, could have - served more than two years in jail under the maximum sentence, you cannot own a gun by law [1]. That might include, for example, a conviction for a certain type of trespassing, e.g., on federal land.
Lots of people have petty misdemeanor convictions for foolish things they did 20 years ago after drinking too much beer. Why should such a conviction override the constitution?
The 2nd Amendment - once a guaranteed right to keep and bear arms - is now meaningless, just like the rest of our constitution. That's what happens when a White republic built by White men turns into a multicultural, feminized "democracy" run by Jews, Blacks, Browns and women.

On the last day of the conference, the wonderful French writer/philosopher Guillaume Faye spoke about the "Threat to the West." In an excellent presentation he focused on the internal and external threat of fundamentalist Islam to Europe. It is my belief that we must stop the non-European immigration into our homelands, but I also firmly believe that supporting the Jewish extremist, Neocon "Clash of Civilizations" external war is disastrous. The Iraq War and adventurism elsewhere are taking our focus from the real threats here at home. And the so-called war on terrorism has spawned the means they use to suppress our freedoms here at home. As all of you have heard me say repeatedly: "It is not the Iraqi borders that we should be concerned with, but the Mexican-American border."
It is also my belief that the immigration problem itself and perhaps even more importantly, the destruction of European American consciousness and traditions, the advance of egalitarianism, feminism and multiculturalism, globalism - all have been driven by Jewish extremists in their relentless quest for supremacy. It was not the Arabs who opened our immigration floodgates, who took over our anthropological sciences, who led the multicultural and diversity march, who weakened us with Marxism, Freudianism, Feminism, pornography, abortion and acceptance of non-reproductive sexual deviance and every sort of debilitating cultural , physical and spiritual nihilism. Even more important, it has not been the Arabs who have seized the control points of mass media as well as the sources of political finance and influence that have led to the ethnic cleansing of our people across the European World. Although we must oppose massive im migration with all our ability, it is not Arabs or Muslims who have led the attack on our people. In fact, they weren't even the ones who changed our immigration laws.
In short, the West, has not simply succumbed to an external or even a natural phenomenon among us. We have been subverted by extremists who have destroyed our own ethnic consciousness and ethnic dominance while they have relentlessly worked for their own genetic and political supremacy. While they have opened our gates in America and Europe, Israel's own Jewish demographic mastery is foremost in all their considerations.
So I became concerned listening to a subtle message that we should be happy because the Zionists were now going to be our friends and allies, something that I think is a dangerous notion to our ultimate survival. There are certainly Jewish supremacists who fear the rising Muslim clout in Europe in America as a competing political interest group, but even that minority of Jews bemoan and admit the fact that the overwhelming Jewish extremist establishment supports open borders in the West. They believe that their control can be maintained the multiculturalism of the West under a Jewish cultural, media, music, and political umbrella. They think that they can thrive in what Jewish activist Stephen Steinlight calls their policy of "divide and conquer." In my opinion, although Arab power is an important problem to them, the powers of Jewish supremacism still fear the European far more than the Arab. They believe that they can with their copious talents, subvert and eventually control the "Muslim problem."
As a side note, their clever subversion of their enemies can be seen in the recent sectarian violence between Shiite and Sunni Muslims of Iraq. It is exactly what Israel has historically sought among its Arab neighbors. In Jewish Supremacism, I note the diaries of Israeli Prime Minister Moshe Sharett in discussing how Israel did everything it could in false flag operations to foster and promote the Lebanese Civil War. Even Ariel Sharon's facilitation of the Sabre and Shatila massacre in Beirut can be seen as expressions of that divide and conquer policy. Israel cannot afford an "American liberated Iraq" to now be dominated by a Shiite, pro-Iran, anti-Israel, American refurbished state. How elementally easy it would have been for the Mossad to have perpetrated the Askariya mosque bombing either directly through their own agents or their steering of Mossad-infiltrated Arab organizations. It is in their interest to destabilize the country, for such offers no danger to Israel.
During the Amren convention it seemed some speakers were practically cheer leading for the Neocon foreign adventurism. Perle, Wolfowitz, Crystal, Feith, Abrams, Libby and their ilk would have loved to hear our leaders enlisted in their proposed World War IV for Israel. I need not remind you that almost all these men in the Neoconservative movement are in fact former Trotskyites who subverted traditional conservatives and have been for open immigration as well as every kind of movement destructive of European American heritage and rights. These facts are abundantly clear.
It was in that context that I asked the question of Guillaume Faye, I praised his
stirring speech, and asked as politely as I could, that in regard to the old Islamic invasions of hundreds of years ago, another middle eastern group in Western society worked to undermine our defenses. That historic fact shows them to have opened the gates at both Constantinople and at Grenada to the invaders, and that they have been the primary force that has opened the immigration gates of the West in the last 50 years. I asked him what suggestions he had in dealing with the internal part of our problem, the subversion of our means and our will?

Orthodox Judaism's tyranny over the mind is not challenged anywhere to the degree that Islam is confronted by western intellectuals. The campaign against Islam allegedly based on a desire for freedom of speech and women's rights, is a sham, since the religion of Orthodox Judaism, about which those who burn with indignation against "Islamism" are largely quiescent, is fervently opposed to both free speech and women's rights.
The leading Orthodox Judaic rock star, Matisyahu, will not shake hands with women, in keeping with Talmudic law. Women are discouraged from driving automobilies in certain Judaic communities. One can make a list of almost every "male chauvinist vice" practiced by Muslims and discover the same being practiced among Judaics, with the exception that Judaic sexism is not an issue with western elites.
On Feb. 28, the pompous Judaic-French intellectual Bernard-Henri Lévy issued, together with Salman Rushdie and ten others, a "Manifesto: Together Facing the New Totalitarianism," as follows: "...Islamism is a reactionary ideology which kills equality, freedom and secularism wherever it is present. Its success can only lead to a world of domination: man's domination of woman, the Islamists' domination of all the others....
"...We refuse to renounce our critical spirit out of fear of being accused of 'Islamophobia,' an unfortunate concept which confuses criticism of Islam as a religion with stigmatisation of its believers. We plead for the universality of freedom of expression, so that a critical spirit may be exercised on all continents, against all abuses and all dogmas."
This manifesto would be more aptly titled, Masterpiece of Hypocrisy. In the final paragraph, for "Islamophobia," substitute anti-semitism, and for "Islam," Judaism. Now what happens to the campaign for "universality of freedom of expression"? The silence of the grave!
Lévy does everything he can to snuff out the rights of Robert Faurisson and other writers in France who have been repeatedly prosecuted, fined and beaten for scrutinizing in their books and pamphlets the gas chamber icons. Lévy wishes to excoriate Islam to his heart's content, while protecting Judaism from any similar harsh treatment. Levy's double-standard thrives thanks to the milieu of Judaic theocratic supremacy which permeates the media salons and government bureaus of Europe.
Writers such as David Irving, Ernst Zündel and Germar Rudolf are imprisoned in Europe on what amounts to blasphemy charges and Lévy and the other manifesto signers have nothing to say in protest. The claim that these are intellectuals who desire to criticize "all dogmas," is the joke of the month.
They can only get away with their flaming phoniness because a media monopoly with roots in a Judaic theocracy protects them, by ensuring that radical criticism of their nonsense is limited to obscure blogs and other cobwebbed corners of the Internet. No "credentialed" European mediacrats so much as holler the words "David Irving" at Lévy and Rushdie, those disgusting poseurs. Instead, they encourage them to primp and preen for the cameras, posing as the daring exponents of human freedom -- as defined by the rabbis.
Germar Rudolf, a Max Planck Institute research scientist, is serving a five year prison sentence in Germany solely for having probed too deeply with his chemical analyses into the shrines and icons of Holocaustianity. But Monsieur Lévy and his co-signatories of the illustrious "manifesto" have not a single word of solidarity for this imprisoned heretic, precisely because they agree that he should be in jail.
The empty talk, shameless affectation and puffed-up sanctimony of Rushdie, Lévy and the other signers of the "manifesto," is beyond nausea. We would wish to vomit out of our souls these scoundrels who mock freedom, but they are so vacuous and spectral, one cannot locate them even in a puddle of vomit.

With gold prices rising against all of the world's fiat currencies,
some have suggested that gold now trades as if it were an alternative
currency, on par with the dollar, euro, and yen. However, this
observation reveals a basic lack of understanding of the difference
between money and currency. Since the confusion seems to be
wide-spread, I thought it would be worthwhile to try and clarify the
issue.
In addition to being a unit of account, medium of exchange, store of
value, and a method of deferred payment, money must possess intrinsic
value. Historically, many commodities have functioned as money, but
none as successfully as gold, with its most common form being the coin.
However, blacksmiths, banks, and governments routinely issued notes
redeemable in money, which in most cases was gold. Such notes, referred
to as note-currency, or simply currency, would circulate alongside
actual money. Total money supply then would consist of actual money,
gold or silver coins, and note-currency. However, even though currency
circulated alongside of money, the notes themselves were not money, but
in effect money substitutes. The money itself was the gold that the
note currency promised to pay.
With the advent of fraction reserve banking, the supply of currency
would expand and contract, as notes were continuously issued into and
withdrawn from circulation. The supply of real money however generally
increased slowly, though its rate varied slightly as a result of
discoveries or the volume of coinage. Legal tender refers to a status
conferred on money by government. However, in modern times, what
circulates as legal tender is not money at all. In fact, it is not even
currency, as by definition currency most be redeemable in money. What
circulates today is simply fiat currency, or currency backed by nothing.
However, this is not they way it is supposed to be. For example, the
United States is constitutionally on a bi-metallic standard, as the
Constitution, in article I, section 10 prohibits states from making
anything other than gold and silver coin legal tender in payment of
debts. The Federal government, in article 1, section 8, is only
authorized to coin money and regulate the value thereof. As the only
coins the states can make legal tender are gold and silver, the Federal
government's monetary powers simply consist of coining gold and silver
in fixed standards of weights and measures. As the states are
specifically barred from issuing currency, referred to in the
Constitution as bills of credit, and the Federal government is neither
authorized to establish legal tender nor emit bills of credit, gold and
silver coins are still the only constitutionally authorized money in
the United States today.
Some have argued that since the constitutional prohibition against
making anything other than gold and silver coins legal tender is
limited to the states, it does not apply to the Federal government.
However, such an assertion is blatantly ridiculous, as the 10th
amendment to the Bill of Rights clearly states that "those powers not
delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by
it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the
people." Therefore, as the Federal government is not authorized to
print fiat currency, it has no legal authority to do so. In fact, the
original draft of the Constitution did include a Federal authorization
to issue bills of credit, but the framers had the good sense to strike
it out by a vote of nine to two, with two abstentions. The fact that
the irredeemable notes of a private banking syndicate, de facto
quasi-governmental agency now circulate as legal tender in the United
States reflects a colossal failure on the part of the American
Judiciary to enforce the constitutional restraints imposed on Congress.
In conclusion, there is money, which includes gold and silver, and
money substitutes, which include legitimate currency, which is
redeemable in actual money, and fiat currency, which is redeemable in
nothing. Rather than trading as another currency, gold is finally
reasserting its temporarily lost monetary status. Its rise against all
of the world's fiats currencies does not represent a preference for one
currency over another, but a preference for actually money over mere
substitutes.

Saddam planned to deploy 'camels of mass destruction'

Saddam Hussein planned to use "camels of mass destruction" as weapons
to defend Iraq, loading them with bombs and directing them towards
invading forces.
The animals were part of a plan to arm and equip foreign insurgents
drawn up by the dictator shortly before the American-led invasion three
years ago, reveals a 37-page report, captured after the fall of Baghdad
and just released by the Pentagon. It is part of a cache of thousands
of documents that the United States Department of Defence says it does
not have the resources to translate.
Earlier this month, the Pentagon released copies in the original Arabic
onto the internet in the hope that others would interpret them into
English.
Handwritten on official paper, one of the reports appears to be a road
map for the insurgency, with detailed instructions for training what it
calls suicide bombers.
In the memo, they are described as "estishehadeyeen", Arabic for
suicide martyrs, and would almost certainly have been foreign
volunteers.
The memo details a training commission to be headed by senior officers,
including a colonel from the "Directory of Political Orientation".
Their job, says the report, was to "prepare a very intensive training
course", "to raise the physical fitness and train in the use of
Kalashnikovs and hand grenades".
It continues: "The largest section of the course will be specialised to
focus on using the explosive material in the body, in motorcycle, in
cars, and in camels". Camels will be "provided by the Directory of
General Military Intelligence".
The memo also reveals the incredible bureaucracy that underpinned
Saddam's Iraq. Rifles and hand grenades were to be provided by a
Department of Armament and Equipping, explosives by the Directory of
Military Engineering and "religious sermons that emphasise jihad'' by
the Directory of Political Orientation and the Religious Scholars.
The papers have been translated by Arabic-speaking members of Free
Republic, a conservative internet discussion forum that believes the
documents will justify British and American claims that Saddam had made
Iraq a haven for terrorists.
If the translation is correct, it suggests that many of the foreign
fighters now attacking coalition forces and bombing Iraqi civilians
were directly trained by the Saddam regime, although there are no known
reports of camels being used in suicide attacks.

Usually, in this columnist-reader dance, I'm enlightened in ways that encourage me. You respond to something I've written with insight that helps me see a larger picture or a new perspective.
But, lately, I've been enlightened in ways that, frankly, concern me.
On March 5, I wrote about a Hispanic family in Brownsville whose 28-year-old neighbor, Robert Travis, has placed a sign above an arrow pointing at the Garcias' house, reading: WE MUST PROTECT OUR BORDERS.
The response was a collective ho-hum. Yes, The Register-Guard got a few letters denouncing the guy. I got a few supportive e-mails. But in Brownsville, sources tell me, it's been business as usual. Nobody marched in front of the man's house. No church rose up to show support for the family. The sign is still there.
Admittedly, I'm idealistic; given such a blatant example of hatred, I half-expected a group from Eugene to caravan to Brownsville, bearing organic gifts of good will to the family. And perhaps offering a few signs of their own.
Nope.
Then a week after the Brownsville article, I received more than a dozen e-mails and phone calls from readers - many sounding passionate, some plain angry - that a song about the states I'd referred to in a Q&A column actually dated back long before 1959, as I'd said. And included lyrics different from the ones I'd mentioned.
Hmmm.
The clincher came Tuesday after I'd written about a weird juxtaposition of culture I experienced over the weekend: watching a production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" followed by reading an article about Prussian Blue, a white-nationalist, teenage singing duo with a love for Hitler and a mother who suggests the Holocaust wasn't all that drastic.
Amid a sprinkling of positive responses, I got a list of 66 reasons why the Holocaust is a myth. An e-mail saying that if I believed 6 million Jews died, I was "naive and ignorant." A voice mail saying "the Holocaust is rather overstated." And an e-mail that gave a passionate defense of the twins, their mother and white nationalism in general.
What's wrong with this picture?
What's wrong is that so few of us seem to make the connection between then and now. In a sense, aren't the Garcias of Brownsville, like the Franks of Holland, being forced to live with the threat of bigotry aimed at them each and every day?
What's wrong - and you know I love trivia - is that people seem more concerned about trivial matters such as the words of a silly song than about blatant hatred.
What's wrong is that the leaders of Brownsville are unwilling to publicly decry the actions of a man who's making their community an undesirable place to live.
What's wrong is that people won't take time to read a history book - or take a hard look in the mirror - but will take the time to send me lengthy e-mails defending hatemongers.
"The Holocaust happened," says Nathan Fendrich, whose Holocaust presentations have enlightened high-schoolers in our area for years. "More than 5,000 Jewish villages were wiped off the map for all time. Virtually every Jewish section of every occupied city ceased to exist.
"Most nations, including all European countries, have made separate studies. The evidence is overwhelming. As Churchill put it: `It's probably the worst crime in all of human history.' "
But while it was happening, those who dared call attention to it were mere voices in the wilderness.
My suggestion isn't that 13-year-old twins wearing smiley-face Hitler shirts are the equal of the man himself, or that what's happening to the Garcias is equal to what happened to the Jews.
My suggestion is that whether it's 6 million being killed or one family being held up to daily humiliation, hate is hate. And silence from the rest of us is deadly.

There is no Israel 'Lobby'

It brings no joy to issue a public rebuttal against a valued colleague, but there are moments that demand no less. The occasion is the publication of an essay titled "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy," written by two professors, John Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt, the academic dean and my colleague at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
In essence, their 82-page piece argues that U.S. policy in the Middle East has been hijacked by a pro-Israel "Lobby." "The core of the Lobby," they say, "is comprised of American Jews who make a significant effort in their daily lives to bend U.S. foreign policy so that it advances Israel's interests."
As a result, "the United States has a terrorism problem in good part because it is so closely allied with Israel."
Mearsheimer and Walt assert that for decades, and especially since the Six-Day War in 1967, the lobby has manipulated our political system to give short shrift to Palestinians, was a "critical element" in the decision to invade Iraq and is now skewing our policy on Iran (the United States, they say, "can live with a nuclear Iran").
Not only are these charges wildly at variance with what I have personally witnessed in the Oval Office, but they also impugn the unstinting service to America's national security by public figures like Dennis Ross, Martin Indyk and many others.
As a Christian, let me add that it is also wrong and unfair to call into question the loyalty of millions of American Jews who have faithfully supported Israel while also working tirelessly and generously to advance America's cause, both at home and abroad. They should be praised, not pilloried.
To be sure, pro-Israeli groups in this country, led by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, push hard to gain the support of U.S. political leaders. AIPAC is officially registered as a lobbying group, but that does not mean that its members are engaging in something sinister.
It is just not true that the Israel "Lobby" has captured U.S. policy toward the Middle East. As David McCullough writes, Harry Truman recognized Israel in 1948 out of humanitarian concerns and in spite of pressure from Jewish groups, not because of it. Since then, 10 straight American Presidents have befriended Israel - not because they were under pressure but because they believed America had made a commitment to Israel's survival, just as we have to other threatened outposts of freedom like Berlin, South Korea and Taiwan.
Over the course of four tours in the White House, I never once saw a decision in the Oval Office to tilt U.S. foreign policy in favor of Israel at the expense of America's interest.
Moreover, history shows many instances when our Presidents have sharply opposed the Israeli government. I was there when Ronald Reagan, a great friend of Israel, was so repelled by pictures of victims in Lebanon that he insisted the Israelis call off their assault on Beirut (they did).
Has Washington sometimes tilted too much toward Israel? Of course, just as we have toward other friends overseas. Is our policy in the Middle East worthy of serious debate? Absolutely, and we should defend the right of academics to question it.

It's going to be illuminating to watch how Harvard handles the controversy over the decision of its John F. Kennedy School of Government to issue a "Faculty Research Working Paper" on "The Israel Lobby" that is co-authored by its academic dean, Stephen Walt. On page one this morning we report that Dean Walt's paper has been met with praise by David Duke, the man the Anti-Defamation League calls "America's best-known racist." The controversy is still young. But it's not too early to suggest that it's going to be hard for Mr. Walt to maintain his credibility as a dean. We don't see it as a matter of academic freedom but simply as a matter of necessary quality control. [I'm sure you don't. 'Academic freedom' is the right of jews to undermine Aryan institutions, not the right of Aryans to criticize jews.]
The Kennedy School, to cite but one example, is home to the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, & Public Policy, whose Web site claims it "promotes serious, probing analysis of how the news media affect politics and public policy in the United States and globally." How is the Center's Alex Jones going to be able to work for a dean who prattles on the way Mr. Walt does about how the pro-Israel lobby is "manipulating the media" on the basis, in part, of the false claim that "the American media contains few criticisms of Israeli policy, rarely questions Washington's relationship with Israel, and only occasionally discusses the Lobby's profound influence on U.S. policy"?

Controversial paper on "Israel Lobby" will not display KSG logo or series

The Kennedy School of Government (KSG) removed its logo from a controversial paper published last week by Academic Dean Stephen M. Walt and the University of Chicago's John J. Mearsheimer. A disclaimer stating that the views expressed belong only to the authors was also made more prominent on the working paper's cover.
In their paper, Walt and Mearsheimer argued that the "Israel Lobby," composed of active supporters of Israel, has seized control of U.S. foreign policy and made it reflect Israel's interests more than those of the U.S. Since its publication in the London Review of Books last Thursday, the authors have drawn heated criticism from many professional jews, including Harvard's Frankfurter Professor of Law Alan M. Dershowitz and longtime Harvard lecturer Martin Peretz, who is also the editor-in-chief of The New Republic.
According to a statement released yesterday by KSG Dean David T. Ellwood '75, the paper's logo was removed after some news agencies "were mistakenly reporting the paper as a 'Harvard study' written by 'two Harvard researchers.'"
Usually, papers like Walt and Mearsheimer's, which is part of the faculty working paper series and available on the KSG's website, display the school's logo, the series name, and a standard disclaimer stating that the views expressed may not reflect those of the KSG or Harvard.
The removal of the logo and series name was supported by Walt, the KSG said in the statement.
The authors also strengthened the wording of the disclaimer that appeared on the cover of their study, writing that "as academic institutions, Harvard University and the University of Chicago do not take positions on the scholarship of individual faculty, and this article should not be interpreted or portrayed as reflecting the official position of either institution."
According to their assistants, both authors were travelling yesterday and unavailable for comment.
Yesterday's issue of The New York Sun reported that an "observer" familiar with Harvard said that the University had received calls from "pro-Israel donors" concerned about the KSG paper. One of the calls, the source told The Sun, was from Robert Belfer, a former Enron director who endowed Walt's professorship when he donated $7.5 million to the Kennedy School's Center for Science and International Affairs in 1997.
"Since the furor, Bob Belfer has called expressing his deep concerns and asked that Stephen not use his professorship title in publicity related to the article," the source told The Sun.
Belfer did not respond to a request to comment yesterday.

pushing for a law that limits the ability to lock credit reports to
victims of identity theft. Moreover, the reports could be unlocked with
5-day's advance notice. Once a report is locked, an agency cannot
release any of its details. Consumer groups are upset, and rightly so,
that a federal law might supercede what has been done at state levels.
Why does the credit industry need any protection? As far as we are
concerned they have no right to anyone's records. People don't
authorize to do what they do. Worse yet, their records are replete with

Documented and Undocumented Workers, families and allies marched in total solidarity with Anti-War Activists, led by Fernando Suarez Del Solar, Pablo Paredes and Medea Benjamin in a 2,000+ citizen, strong & peaceful march though the city of Watsonville. It was beautiful.
The route had been pre-planned and sent to the police. Crowd security was provided by the Watsonville Brown Berets. The Berets also are part of the nationwide coalition, "The Alliance for Human Rights," the group which decided to make March 25 a national day of action against HR4437. This new, abusive, immigrant-bashing legislation is heading for the Senate on Tuesday which, among many awful things.would make simply being illegal in this country a felony. There have been marches, walkouts and various actions across the country over the past week in practically every state. The momentum to Saturday's march had been building.
With so many people, we could never have taken the sidewalks solely. We marched down one lane on four lane roads.with two lanes heading in each direction. We marched in only the furthest right hand lane and on the sidewalk. Traffic was still moving in both directions. People stayed inside the line of the one lane the whole time.
Yet, after the march, the Watsonville Police Department targeted one organizer (a Brown Beret) and wrote him a citation with 8-10 counts against him, including criminal charges. We are still waiting for the ticket to arrive in the mail, what we know we have learned from one policeman and the news. They will also be charging the Brown Berets for police overtime. This was an effort to show people that ".they can't do whatever they want to," in the words of the Watsonville Police.
The people wanted to march in the streets, they have that right. The extent of the crowd demonstrated the power of the immigration issue and the passion of the people. The Brown Berets did not expect or bring that many people. Residents came from everywhere to use the opportunity to be heard. This has been a silent population until now. Silent because they are working 12-16 hour days in the fields, hotels, and factories so Americans can enjoy the lifestyle and economic privilege we are accustomed to.
As concerned and compassionate citizens, it is our duty to ensure that no one who organized or participated is ever a scapegoat or vilified on behalf of the powers that be. It is our responsibility to stand up and demand the Watsonville Police view their job that day as one of public service. That service being to protect the people in the streets. We had peaceful demonstrators, our own security yet the Watsonville Police insisted on assigning 10 cops and various vehicles to our march. This was not requested or necessary. We marched in Salinas right afterwards with NO POLICE SECURITY and we were fine.

Katrina Vanden Heuvel: Tancredo a 'White Supremacist'
Nation magazine publisher Katrina Vanden Heuvel said Sunday that illegal immigration foe, Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is animated by a "white supremacist" philosophy - and insisted that illegals are "the backbone of this country."
Following the Colorado Republican on ABC's "This Week," Vanden Heuvel told host George Stephanopoulos:
"Tancredo, on your show today - he looked pleasant. But I will say that what's happened in our country is that some of the white supremacist thinking that used to be represented by David Duke has been absorbed by people like Tancredo."
Vanden Heuvel called the House immigration reform bill backed by Tancredo "very dangerous," "draconian" and "un-American," before praising the illegal population:
"Undocumented immigrants are the backbone of this economy," she told "This Week." "They do the suburban lawns in this country. They take care of the kids. The economy in this country would be in real trouble [without illegal immigrants.]"
Vanden Heuvel predicted that "2006 will be the year of immigrants rising" before adding, "the demonization of immigrants is going to lead to ripping apart the Republican Party."
Contrary to Vanden Heuvel's claim, poll after poll on illegal immigration shows that more than two-thirds of Americans favor tougher border enforement.

The centerpiece of the plan is a portable nuclear weapon manufactured in the former Soviet Union. A tame "terrorist", destined no doubt to be an eventual patsy, arranged for the bomb's transport by sea, and the ship carrying it entered Galveston Bay on January 25, 2006. At this time the device remains hidden on board the ship that brought it, a freighter docked in or near the port of Texas City, about thirty minutes south of Houston, and only ten miles from the island city of Galveston.

The color of our skin will mark us as suspects, as felons, as threats to "the homeland." Any cop will be free to stop us at any time, under any pretext, to check -- not for dope -- but for our "papers."
At first it won't seem like much. Quietly, at first, a few of us will begin to disappear, just like some 60 thousand immigrants of Muslim and Arabic descent have disappeared since the onset of the Patriot Act; without a word. Like them, we will become targets of the so-called "war on terror."
First it will be dozens, then hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands.
Mothers will disappear walking to the corner store. Fathers will never come home from work. Children will be left behind, sobbing in apartments empty of food, warmth, money and life. The neighbors will be afraid. The tens of thousands could readily become millions.
The picture painted above is nothing but hard headed realism. Legislation now before the US Senate would make every undocumented person in the US a felon and authorize every police department in the country to arrest people on immigration charges.
The size of the Border Patrol would, in effect, increase by 60 times, from the current 11,000 Migra agents to 663,546 enforcers. If each authorized officer in the US arrested one undocumented migrant once every three months, within five years over 11 million migrants would be gone an ethnic cleansing without parallel in US history.
This is the future they have planned. Certain neighborhoods -- the Gulfton District or the North Side in Houston, Pico Union and Boyle Heights in LA, the San Francisco Mission District -- will be targeted. Almost everyone in them will be considered a "felon," or someone who has aided the "felons." They won't be able to be able to tell us apart. "A Mexican is a Mexican," is what they will say.
In certain neighborhoods concrete barriers will block the streets. Police and La Migra will arrange themselves in hunting parties together. Like clockwork, a police cruiser will turn the corner near your place, once every 60 seconds. No one will breathe. The children will have nightmares.
This isn't just emotional rhetoric. It's happened before; in the Gulfton District in Houston in 1990 and '95, and in Pico Union in LA in 1990. This is how it's done. The barrio will be besieged, taken over from within.
They want to build detention camps for us. They are debating it now. They want to label us felons, but deny us a trial. They're debating it now. They want to build a wall -- they want us to die, tongue swollen and hallucinating, without water in the desert. They are debating it now.
These are the human impacts of planning already underway. New border fences are an integral part of current legislative initiatives.
On Feb. 6, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced that the Fiscal Year 2007 federal budget would allocate over $400 million to add 6,700 additional detention beds for migrants, part of a10-year Homeland Security strategic plan, code-named ENDGAME.
According to a Homeland Security document on the plan, ENDGAME aims to carry out goals "articulated in the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798." Homeland Security is seeking the ability to "remove all removable aliens," including "illegal economic migrants, aliens who have committed criminal acts, asylum-seekers or potential terrorists."
Mr. Bush and the Christian fascists in power have found their scapegoat and it is us. We are the new Jews in a new Germany in a new century. They call it the New American Century, a New World Order, a "unipolar" Reich a White America over all.
E Pluribus Unum: the many eradicated; reduced to One. White. Nation.
This is the pretext. They call us "invaders." We represent a "destabilizing factor" for the "nation." They say we are dirty, just like they said the Jews were dirty -- and disease ridden.
They say our neighborhoods and our culture are "cesspools." They want to keep their culture "pure." They say we "steal" the jobs that they have in fact shipped overseas, and that are nowhere to be found. And now they're calling us "terrorists," just like they called our ancestors "savages."
After decades the nation's long-suppressed racism is finding an open voice once more, and they are openly strategizing about how to best appeal to the unconscious racist sentiments just beneath the surface among a broader public.
US Congressman Tom Tancredo warns about us: we (Mexicans and migrant peoples) "need to be found before it is too late. They're coming here to kill you, and you, and me, and my grandchildren."
It's a matter of "spin." One strategist on the right wing web site RedState.org tells them how to spin it. He says that to deal effectively with us our enemies must "focus on terminology."
"People who are in this country without proper documentation," he writes "are foreign infiltrators. These foreign infiltrators operate clandestinely within our country. They are no different than the foreign infiltrators who destroyed the world trade center and attacked the Pentagon. Except that they haven't done anything yet."
"Once you have the terminology correct," he continues, "it is easy to define a solution to discourage foreign infiltration. First, treat any foreign infiltrator as a prisoner of war. Turn them over to the militaryé No hearings, no public defenders, no backlogged courts, no squandering of American tax dollars protecting the non-existent civil rights of foreign infiltrators."
The strategizing isn't empty: these Minutemen fantasies are on the verge of becoming national reality.
Republican House Judiciary Committee Chairman Sensenbrenner's HR 4437, The Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005, recently passed the US House of Representatives. Its most extreme and punitive provisions are being upheld by the Judiciary Committee of the US Senate.
This legislation would do just what the RedState strategist ordered.
Key elements of the Sensenbrenner bill include:
~Making it a felony to be in the U.S. without legal documents. Under current law this is a simple civil violation. Millions of us would be classified as "felons" and subject to immediate detention and deportation, often without so much as a hearing. Access to the courts will be severely restricted if legislation currently under consideration is approved.
How can they tell who's a felon? The felons will have brown skin. Fifty million of us. All of us will be suspects. What will they stop us for? Anything they please. After all, they already stop us for anything they please.
~ Making it a federal crime to "assist" our people who are without documents. Those who leave water in the desert to save the lives of migrants would become felons. Millions of teachers, doctors, priests, nurses, attorneys and others who give any kind of help or services to undocumented people will also become felons overnight - and could face five years in prison and have their assets seized by the government.
Giving a ride to someone without the proper "papers" could lead to felony charges. It remains unclear if renting an apartment or selling a car to someone without "papers" would become a felony.
Cardinal Mahoney of the 5 million member Los Angeles Diocese of the Catholic Church has declared he will order his priests to defy this law, if it is passed.
~Expanding police powers over immigrants. Police departments would be granted greater power to check legal status, a move that would increase the number of immigration enforcement agents by 60 times the current number. Local law enforcement agencies would be paid for detaining our people and turning us over to federal authorities.
These provisions will turn police into bounty hunters, the moral equivalent of Cazamigrantes, and highlight their role as a modern version of the Night Riders that once terrorized communities of color.
~ The construction of five double-layer border fences--totaling 698 miles--in California and Arizona.
Over 4,000 people have died trying to cross the US/ Mexican border since fences in California forced people to cross at points in the Sonora desert into Arizona.
~ Requiring employers to collect Social Security numbers and other data on workers and turn it over to the Department of Homeland Security, which would then verify worker's "legal status" and store the data. All workers would, in effect, need a government clearance before they could have a job, any job.
~ In a related development, the U.S. government announced in February 2006 that it plans to pay Halliburton $385 million to build new "detention centers" to imprison us.
This is a chilling and potentially deadly development in a nation that kidnaps and spirits captives to secret prisons in Europe and which runs torture centers in places like Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo torture centers which are condemned and denounced the world over.
In concert with the specter of mass deportations, pogroms, and widespread, race-based scapegoating, new "detention centers" strikes a chord eerily close to concentration camp.
As one writer questioned "Just what will happen in these detention centers, built to lock away undocumented people whose legal rights have been disappeared, and who have been cast as "hordes," "invaders," and a threat to national security? "
On the ultra-Right, anti-Mexican shock groups such as the National Policy Institute, Minutemen leaders, and others are calling for our mass deportation.
The Minutemen's Jim Gilchrist has called for the National Guard to be deployed at the Mexican / US border. Gilchrist's partner and rival in the Minutemen, Chris Simcox, makes the agenda clear, saying, "Oh, Jesus, it is unbelievable. I mean, we need the National Guard to clean out all our cities and round them up. They are hard-core criminals. They have no problem slitting your throat and taking your money or selling drugs to your kids or raping your daughters and they are evil people."
While there is no mention of using the National Guard under the federal legislation currently under consideration, clear steps leading toward a police state for people of indigenous descent are being advanced and the record shows that when the Euro-colonialist leadership of the US chooses to attack us, mass deportation of migrants and Chicanos alike is the weapon of choice. It can happen here. In fact, it has.
Over 1 million of us were deported during the racist "Operation Wetback" in the year 1954, alone.
Before the mass deportations during the Great Depression a Congressman from Texas testified in formal hearings that a strict quota system should be imposed on Mexicans because we are "germ-carriers, inassimilable, a people who are with us but not of us, and not for us." We are, he said "é incapable of development away from" a condition of "moral and financial pauperism," and that our influence was causing "the breaking down of [the] social fabric...."
If this rhetoric sounds familiar, it should. It is the unchanging rhetoric of white nationalism.
That such rhetoric is being used again by the highest authorities in the US should be cause for deep alarm, especially in the context of the Patriot Act and other dramatic moves toward legalized fascism in the US.
That the State is acting on this rhetoric to create a felonized, legally scapegoated racial and cultural under-caste calls for uncompromising action aimed at our self defense as a People.

DENVER — The FBI, while waging a highly publicized war against terrorism, has spent resources gathering information on antiwar and environmental protesters and on activists who feed vegetarian meals to the homeless, the agency's internal memos show.
For years, the FBI's definition of terrorism has included violence against property, such as the window-smashing during the 1999 Seattle protests against the World Trade Organization. That definition has led FBI investigations to online discussion boards, organizing meetings and demonstrations of a wide range of activist groups. Officials say that international terrorists pose the greatest threat to the nation but that they cannot ignore crimes committed by some activists.
"It's one thing to express an idea or such, but when you commit acts of violence in support of that activity, that's where our interest comes in," said FBI spokesman Bill Carter in Washington.
He stressed that the agency targeted individuals who committed crimes and did not single out groups for ideological reasons. He cited the recent arrest of environmental activists accused of firebombing an unfinished ski resort in Vail. "People can get hurt," Carter said. "Businesses can be ruined."
The FBI's encounters with activists are described in hundreds of pages of documents obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union under the Freedom of Information Act after agents visited several activists before the 2004 political conventions. Details have steadily trickled out over the last year, but newly released documents provide a fuller view of some FBI probes.
"Any definition of terrorism that would include someone throwing a bottle or rock through a window during an antiwar demonstration is dangerously overbroad," ACLU staff attorney Ben Wizner said. "The FBI will have its hands full pursuing antiwar groups instead of truly dangerous organizations."
ACLU attorneys say most violence during demonstrations is minor and is better handled by local police than federal counterterrorism agents. They say the FBI, which spied on antiwar and civil rights leaders during the 1960s, appears to be investigating activists solely for opposing the government.
"They don't know where Osama bin Laden is, but they're spending money watching people like me," said environmental activist Kirsten Atkins. Her license plate number showed up in an FBI terrorism file after she attended a protest against the lumber industry in Colorado Springs in 2002.
ACLU attorneys acknowledge that the FBI memos are heavily redacted and contain incomplete portraits of some cases. Still, the attorneys say, the documents show that the FBI has monitored groups that were not suspected of any crime.
"It certainly seems they're casting a net much more widely than would be necessary to thwart something like the blowing up of the Oklahoma City federal building," said Mark Silverstein, legal director of the ACLU of Colorado.
FBI officials respond that there is nothing improper about agents attending a meeting or demonstration.
"We have to be able to go out and look at things; we have to be able to conduct an investigation," said William J. Crowley, a spokesman for the FBI in Pittsburgh. His field office filed a report — released by the ACLU this month — in which an agent described photographing Pittsburgh activists who were handing out fliers for a war protest. The report mentioned no potential violence or crimes.
Crowley said his office had been looking for a certain person in that case and had closed the file when it realized the suspect was not among those handing out the leaflets.
The murky connection that the federal government makes between some left-wing activist groups and terrorism was illustrated in a Justice Department presentation to a college law class this month.
An FBI counterterrorism official showed the class, at the University of Texas in Austin, 35 slides listing militia, neo-Nazi and Islamist groups. Senior Special Agent Charles Rasner said one slide, labeled "Anarchism," was a federal analyst's list of groups that people intent on terrorism might associate with.
The list included Food Not Bombs, which mainly serves vegetarian food to homeless people, and — with a question mark next to it — Indymedia, a collective that publishes what it calls radical journalism online. Both groups are among the numerous organizations affiliated with anarchists and anti-globalization protests, where there has been some violence.
Elizabeth Wagoner said she was one of the few students who objected to the groups' inclusion on the list. "My friends do Indymedia," she said. "My friends aren't terrorists."
Rasner said that he'd never heard of the two groups before and didn't mean to condemn them. But he added that it made sense to worry about violent people emerging from anarchist networks — "Any group can have somebody that goes south."
Denver, where the ACLU fought a lengthy court battle with local police over its spying on political groups, has the most extensive records of encounters between the FBI and activists. Documents obtained by the ACLU there revealed how agents monitored the lumber industry demonstration, an antiwar march and an anarchist group that activists say was never formed.
In June 2002, environmental activists protested the annual meeting of the North American Wholesale Lumber Assn. in Colorado Springs. An FBI memo justified opening an inquiry into the protest because an activist training camp was to be held on "nonviolent methods of forest defense ... security culture, street theater and banner making."
About 30 to 40 people attended the protest; three were arrested for trespassing while hanging a political banner. Colorado Springs police faxed the FBI a three-page list of demonstrators' license plate numbers.
In a recent interview, Denver FBI spokeswoman Monique R. Kelso first said the training camp and protest would not have been enough to merit an anti-terrorism inquiry. But later she said that she wasn't familiar with the details of the case and that the FBI opened cases when there was possible criminal activity.
The FBI's Denver office also monitored a February 2003 antiwar demonstration in Colorado Springs. A bureau memo said that activists planned to block streets and an Air Force base entrance, and that a more "radical" faction had announced online that it would meet near the demonstration but break away for unspecified purposes. The memo said an agent would watch the breakaway group and report to local police and FBI agents monitoring the march.
FBI officials say there was additional information, which they cannot disclose, that justified a terrorism investigation of that protest. They stress that they have to be aggressive in investigating terrorism in the post-Sept. 11 world.
"There's a lot of responsibility on the FBI," said Joe Airey, head of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force in Denver. "We have a real obligation to make sure there are no additional terrorist acts on this soil."
Denver-area activists said that since the surveillance documents became public, there had been a subtle chill, with some people avoiding protests for fear of ending up in an FBI file. Some activists think the FBI has been watching their groups to intimidate them.
"We've kind of gathered up our skirts and pulled in," said Sarah Bardwell, who works for the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker group. Along with some activist roommates, she has also volunteered for Food Not Bombs.
"In our house, we don't talk about politics anymore," Bardwell said. "There's been a toning down of everything we do."
That change came after six FBI agents and Denver police officers visited her house in July 2004.
Months earlier, the FBI had obtained a flier advertising a meeting near Bardwell's house to form a chapter of Anarchist Black Cross. That movement has two wings; one, according to the FBI, has been associated with "some of the most violent left-wing groups of the past 40 years."
The organizer of the meeting, Dawn Rewolinski, said the prospective chapter would have been part of the movement's other wing, which writes letters to prisoners. The chapter was never established, Rewolinski said. "All we did is eat some cookies and talk about various prisoners and realize we didn't have enough money for a P.O. box."
Nonetheless, FBI investigators believed a Denver chapter had been launched. They discovered that Anarchist Black Cross was affiliated with Food Not Bombs, and authorities ended up on Bardwell's doorstep, asking about the anarchists' plans for protests at the upcoming Democratic and Republican national conventions.
Kelso, the FBI spokeswoman, said there were documents that could not be released to the ACLU that showed good reasons for the government's concern. She dismissed the idea that agents were spying on activists for political reasons.
"We don't have enough agents," Kelso said, "to go out there to monitor and surveil innocent people."

But I doubt they mention any of that. Diversity implies inequality. And some, by definition, will naturally be inferior. And that should be celebrated. Or, we could mandate that everybody be the same size, same weight, and same IQ. Maybe we could even pretend or be mass-hypnotized into believing "we're all equal".
I rather doubt they have any courses in cultural Marxism or the Frankfurt school in America's colleges, don't you? Marx and the Frankfurt school, weren't they Jews?

Whiteness studies look to redefine notions of race

Katie Fleischer, a senior at the University of Colorado, had just started watching an anti-racist documentary in class one day when something on the TV screen seemed all too familiar. The film, "Blue Eyed," showed an Iowa schoolteacher with blue eyes giving special treatment to those students who also had blue eyes.
"That's basically what classes are like sometimes," said Fleischer, 26, a white student who said she has had only white professors. "You go into it and you have a certain background and the professor looks like you, thinks like you. It's kind of like you're given a free token."
"Whiteness Studies," the title of the class in which she saw the documentary, is a controversial look at what it means to be white in America. Dozens of colleges have introduced similar courses over the past several years. Many focus on the privileges that white people experience, sparking debate over whether the field educates or merely demonizes whites.
"Whiteness is pretty much unexamined and invisible to most whites," said Duncan Rinehart, a professor who teaches the class in the sociology department at Colorado. "I think most whites are well-intentioned. They just don't experience race as much of an issue."
Whiteness studies means different things to different people. The names of the classes vary, from "The Power of Whiteness" at Providence College to "White Racism" at the University of Connecticut. They are taught in departments like sociology, American studies, ethnic studies and women's studies.
But all share similar views of American history — mainly, that whiteness is a false notion that has long been used to deny wealth and power from nonwhites. Many of the courses are taught by white professors to largely white classes, although the demographics can vary depending on the racial complexion of the school.
The purpose of teaching whiteness studies is both academic and socially progressive, professors said. By understanding the social structure that has given whites privileges, the idea goes, students will be better equipped to help end — or at least reduce — racial inequalities.
"The greatest difficulty in the class is to help white students begin to identify their racism," said Elaine Cleeton, a sociology professor at State University of New York at Geneseo, where her "Sociology of Whiteness" course was introduced in January.
Many conservative critics have questioned the legitimacy of the entire field of study, calling it a leftist exercise in white bashing that stands in contrast to the celebratory nature of other ethnic studies classes.
"It's pretty ridiculous," said Jason Mattera, a spokesman for the conservative Young America's Foundation. "I doubt anyone's view is going to be changed by studying whiteness studies. What is going to change is they're going to look down now against white people."
Critical writing on the subject can be traced back as far as W.E.B. DuBois. And required readings in many classes include books from the 1970s and ‘80s.
But only after a 1997 conference at the University of California, Berkeley called "The Masking and Unmasking of Whiteness" did more than a handful of colleges begin offering whiteness studies classes. Jeff Hitchcock, executive director of the Center for the Study of White American Culture, said that as more professors took a research interest in the topic, more colleges began offering related courses.
If nothing else, the classes have provoked thought. According to professors who have taught the classes, it often takes time before students feel comfortable enough to talk openly about race. But once they do, they speak passionately.
Liz Standley, a 20-year-old junior in Rinehart's class, recalled a February class in which a white girl expressed frustration about how nonwhites are treated as victims when whites deal with stereotypes about their wealth and privilege. A black girl in the class was incredulous, Standley said.
"I walk down the alley at night and people turn the other way," the girl said. "You don't see that."
Standley said later: "You had people in class standing up and being like, ‘You're ridiculous,' to both parties. It was definitely heated."
The debate over white identity and privilege has also played out within the families of some students. When Fleischer mentioned white privilege to her parents, she said they seemed taken aback. Then they became defensive, she said, arguing that they never owned slaves, had lots of black friends and were not at all racist.
"They act like I'm being accusatory but I'm not," Fleischer said.
When a whiteness studies class was introduced at San Francisco State University in 2004, the reaction went beyond campus discussion. After a story on the class appeared on a local television news program, Amy Sueyoshi, the Japanese-American professor teaching the class, said she received hate mail from area white supremacist groups for several weeks. The school added security patrols outside her office and had an officer escort her to her car at night.
Rinehart, like other professors interviewed, maintained that the purpose of whiteness studies is to understand white identity, not criticize it. But he also said the classes could do a better job at looking at white cultural contributions.
"Any culture has its magnificent things that it's done and not so good things, and whiteness is the same," he said. "It's neither all good nor all bad. It's a lot in between."
