SIXTY-ONE YEARS ago this spring, the Allies liberated the German concentration camps. Sixty-one years is a long time -- so long that few European leaders have personal experience of the war. Why, then, are the German government and the International Red Cross still conspiring to prevent historians from gaining access to the world's largest Holocaust survivors' archive?
There is no easy answer to this question, particularly since both the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Germany flatly deny they are doing so. Officially known as the International Tracing Service, the archive contains comprehensive documentation from Dachau and Buchenwald, as well as prisoner lists and records from other concentration camps, slave labor camps, displaced-person camps and ghettos. These records, thought to contain more than 17 million names, were deposited in Bad Arolsen, Germany, by the Allied powers after the war and have been managed since 1955 by an international treaty with 11 signatories. The treaty gave the ICRC management of the archive on behalf of survivors and required the German government to fund its operations.
But in recent years it has become clear that this system no longer works. The backlog of victims waiting for information about their lives is now in the hundreds of thousands; evidence that archivists hold back documents is overwhelming; survivors' groups in Germany and elsewhere are protesting; and historians are demanding better access.
In theory, the 11 countries have now agreed to open the archives to historians. But in practice, the longtime director of the archive, Charles Biedermann -- a Swiss employee of the ICRC -- together with the German government has thwarted efforts by the United States, the Netherlands, France and others to make the documents more accessible. Mr. Biedermann, while claiming neutrality, has written letters to German officials in an effort to influence committee deliberations and has recently issued a statement calling wider distribution of the documents "neither morally nor legally justifiable." In conversation, he lists conditions -- his conditions -- that researchers would have to meet before the International Tracing Service could "agree" to open itself up to historians.
The German interior ministry, meanwhile, joins him in pointing out multiple legal issues that prevent them from making the archives more accessible, ranging from the privacy of relatives of camp collaborators to questions about archivists' liability -- despite the fact that similar archives in Belgium and Israel have posed no special problems. Germany, along with Italy, also opposed the creation of a scholarly group to assist the 11-nation commission, which meets once a year and is mostly composed of diplomats without special knowledge of the Holocaust or of archives in general. Perhaps, some suspect, the Germans and the Italians fear a flood of new compensation claims. Or perhaps archive employees simply fear for their jobs.
Both the Germans and the ICRC also claim that any change in the archives' regime requires unanimous approval of all the treaty signatories -- which is not clearly the case and is, of course, impossible, because the Germans object. Yet these are not, and were never intended to be, Germany's archives to control. Clearly it is time to raise this issue's significance, to involve diplomats at a higher level, and to reach a compromise. If possible, the archives should be made completely accessible, with no unusual restrictions, in Bad Arolsen. If legal issues make it impossible to open the archive in Germany, then yes, the documents should be copied and placed in appropriate archives abroad, where they could be managed under the rules of other countries. Sixty-one years later, survivors, historians and the rest of the world have a right to know what happened.

If we are to believe the words of Mr. Volcker (jew), a rising price of
gold is an enemy of the State.

Plenty of interesting and shocking words have been spoken in the visitors' locker room at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston during the 2005/06 NBA season, but nothing compares to Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant telling a handful of reporters, "I wouldn't mind being Jewish. I wouldn't mind. Really."
Bryant, the NBA's leading scorer at 34.8 points per game, was fielding questions from a television reporter on camera about the dearth of Jewish athletes in professional sports. The basketball star, however, was skeptical.
"Not too many Jews in professional sports? Hmmm," Bryant said. "That sounds kind of weird to me. Who did your research?"
Reeling from Bryant's caustic tone, the TV reporter changed the topic to MVP talk.
A Jewish journalist from The Boston Globe, however, wouldn't let the previous topic slide. "We are very good at squash," she insisted, under the impression that she was helping her people's cause.
"There were three hockey players at my college who were Jewish," she continued.
"How 'bout that? All on one team," Bryant said, excited.
"The Red Sox have four Jews including [general manager] Theo Epstein," another Jewish reporter added.
"What the hell? Who was doing your research," Bryant asked the TV reporter semifacetiously. "Put the camera back on, man. This guy is false man. This guy is lyin'."

Although there are no Jews currently in the NBA, there are 24 in the National Football League, 18 in Major League Baseball and seven in the National Hockey League, according to www.jewsinsports.org.
If Bryant, a Catholic, really wouldn't mind being Jewish, he would become the highest-profile athlete to convert to Judaism. Although many believe that baseball great Rod Carew converted when he married a Jewish woman, he never actually "joined the tribe." He did, however, raise his children Jewish.
But Bryant dispelled the notion of replacing Schayes as the greatest Jewish basketball player of all-time. "I don't know if I'm converting, but if I do, you can definitely add another athlete to the pool," he said.
And if he does, that's one tip-off Bryant won't be too excited about.

The Perils of Economic Ignorance

Last week in this column I wrote of a perfect economic storm facing
America, caused by a federal government that spends, borrows, and
prints so much money that our dollars are eroding in value at an
alarming rate. Year after year our federal government spends beyond
its revenues, prints new money to pay its debts, and borrows hundreds
of billions abroad in the form of Treasury obligations that someday
must be paid. With too many dollars and debt instruments in
circulation, and no political will in Washington to cut spending, we've
created a monster. Our perceived prosperity depends on keeping the
great debt and credit engine pumping, but the only way to attract new
lenders to fuel the engine is higher interest rates. At some point
one of two things must happen: either the party in Washington ends, or
the supremacy of the dollar as the world's reserve currency ends.
It's a sobering thought, but a choice must be made.
How did this happen? How did we get to such a state? The answer is
found in the nature of politics itself. The truth is that many
politicians and voters essentially believe in a free lunch. They
believe in a free lunch because they don't understand basic economics,
and therefore assume government can spend us into prosperity. This is
the fallacy that pervades American politics today.
I believe one of the greatest threats facing this nation is the willful
economic ignorance of the political class. Many of our elected
officials at every level have no understanding of economics whatsoever,
yet they wield tremendous power over our economy through taxes,
regulations, and countless other costs associated with government.
They spend your money with little or no thought given to the economic
consequences of their actions. It is indeed a tribute to the American
entrepreneurial spirit that we have enjoyed such prosperity over the
decades; clearly it is in spite of government policies rather than
because of them.
I certainly have seen firsthand a great deal of economic ignorance in
Congress over the years. Few members pay any attention whatsoever to
the Federal Reserve Bank, despite the tremendous impact Fed policy has
on their constituents. Even many members of the banking and finance
committees have little or no knowledge of monetary policy. Perhaps
this is why so many in Congress seem to believe we can all become rich
by printing new dollars, or that we can make 2+2=5 by taking money from
some people and giving it to others.
We cannot suspend the laws of economics or the principles of human
action any more than we can suspend the laws of physics. Yet this is
precisely what Congress attempts to do time and time again, no matter
how many times history proves them wrong or economists easily
demonstrate the harms caused by a certain policy.
I strongly recommend that every American acquire some basic knowledge
of economics, monetary policy, and the intersection of politics with
the economy. No formal classroom is required; a desire to read and
learn will suffice. There are countless important books to consider,
but the following are an excellent starting point: The Law by Frederic
Bastiat; Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt; What has Government
Done to our Money? by Murray Rothbard; The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich
Hayek; and Economics for Real People by Gene Callahan.
If you simply read and comprehend these relatively short texts, you
will know far more than most educated people about economics and
government. You certainly will develop a far greater understanding of
how supposedly benevolent government policies destroy prosperity. If
you care about the future of this country, arm yourself with knowledge
and fight back against economic ignorance. We disregard economics and
history at our own peril.

V for Vacuous
Hollywood's latest attempt at insightful political analysis falls flat

"V for Vendetta” is the latest chapter in Hollywood's newfound effort to be taken seriously. The past year has seen several films that try to speak not to the audience's base instincts but rather to their intellects.
However, Hollywood, for all its professed liberalism, does not change easily, and the quintessential icon of brainless entertainment has found the transformation into a sober critic a rather difficult one.
The failure of "V for Vendetta” as political commentary, however, does not come from artlessness—there are moments of true beauty and transcendence in the movie. Rather, "V for Vendetta” is destroyed by sheer pettiness.
Need a reason for the world's collapse into anarchy, a basic premise of the movie's storyline? Easy, blame it on the Iraq war ("America's war grew worse and worse” the script ominously tells us). Need a ready-made authoritarian figure? Make him white, conservative, and religious, and make his party's symbol the Christian cross. Need targets of discrimination? Easy, make them racial minorities and homosexuals. Need a criminal conspiracy? Easy, use big business.
It is only pettiness that can explain why, in a world under serious and unremitting threat from Islamic extremists, it is Christianity that is depicted as intolerant, spiteful, authoritarian, and power hungry. It is only pettiness that can explain why, in a world where Christians are routinely tortured, murdered, or forcibly converted for possession of the Bible, that the Koran is banned and proscribed.
While it is not overly surprising that a movie based on a book—a "graphic novel” to be precise—that damned Thatcherism as racist, authoritarian, and even fascist, is often juvenile, my disappointment stems form the fact that the movie could have been great.
The parts of the movie that dealt with the stifling woodenness of totalitarian vocabulary, the weariness bred by constant exposure to lies, and the indestructibility of human dignity were extremely well done, but were in many ways superceded [sic - superseded] by the childish desire to score cheap political points against Bush.
I take solace in the fact that the flaws of "V for Vendetta" are a sign of England's and America's historical privilege, and our distant removal from any lived totalitarian experience. Images of real totalitarian systems—people forced to eat their own feces, people thrown into blast-furnaces, people eaten alive by rats—these are, of course, not acceptable to our pampered senses: they would make most of us sick to our stomachs.
Accustomed to rational governance, we cannot imagine what an irrational system would look and sound like. The dictatorship in "V for Vendetta," for all its evil, attacks entirely predictable targets in entirely predictable ways. What we do not see is random and senseless terror directed at shifting categories such as "anti-Aryan," "kulak," or "counter-revolutionary" elements. Never do we see the government in "V for Vendetaa" kill people merely to show it can, merely to spread fear: the glue which holds a dictatorship in place.
Even the number of people that the government oppresses during the movie are, in a certain historical sense, quaint. The high chancellor's government killed almost one hundred thousand people? Amateurs! Even the half-baked Khmer Rouge killed over two million, while the Soviets would have considered a hundred thousand dead a mere warm-up.
That we can not imagine the true scale of evil capable of being wrought by mankind is telling, far more telling than anything on display in "V for Vendetta."
