Judy Schaubach, president of Education Minnesota, has decided not to run for re-election next year.
She has been the head of the statewide teachers union since 1998, when the Minnesota Education Association and the Minnesota Federation of Teachers merged. Schaubach was co-president until 2001, when she was elected as the first sole president of the newly formed organization.
Schaubach was not available for comment, but she told members at Education Minnesota's Representative Convention that she has many things she wants to accomplish in the last 15 months of her term and she has no intent of slowing down.
Before the merger, Schaubach was a longtime leader in the Minnesota Education Association.
In 1987 she became secretary-treasurer of the group and eventually served as president from 1994 to 1998.
Anti-Semitic letter condemned
House and Senate leaders Tuesday harshly condemned a virulently anti-Semitic letter lawmakers received this week.
"It deeply saddens me that this malicious and hateful language has infiltrated the Minnesota State Capitol Building," Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson, DFL-Willmar, said.
"The offensive stereotypes of Jews and the age-old anti-Semitic canards contained within the mailing are shocking and do not have a place in Minnesota or anywhere," said House Speaker Steve Sviggum, R-Kenyon.
The rambling nine-page letter, sent by members of the small Gainesville, Mo.-based Winrod Group, accuses Jews of being sex offenders, murderers and liars. Most House and Senate members received it Monday.
The Winrod Group also sent similar letters to lawmakers in Iowa and Colorado this week, according to the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.

The victim, a 28-year-old St. Paul woman, was stabbed and slashed several times, according to police. She underwent surgery at Regions Hospital and was released Sunday, according to her sister, who said the fetus was unharmed.
Robinson was believed to be driving a white Pontiac Transport van with Minnesota license plates DWD844.

A lot of Whites see the entire matter of immigration into America as an immigration or economic matter. But Paco and Juan know that it is really a racial matter. My simple experiment involved recording the races of the first 20 people I saw featured in the pictures that rotate in and out of the front page of http://www.uncw.edu/. The final count was three Asians (15%), eight Whites (40%), and nine Blacks (45%). The problem, of course, is that UNCW has always been around 90% white with a black population in the single digits - usually around 6%. (Author’s Note: There was a brief drop from 6% Black to 4% Black after the university spent its first one million dollars on improving diversity).
All UNCW students have to do on (Change Your) Ethnicity Day is to stop by the Registrar’s Office to have their race changed from White (or Asian, or Hispanic, or Native American, or "Other") to Black. Once they do so, they will be eligible for lots of free stuff without having to earn it.
Sure, my idea for Ethnicity Day is controversial (thanks again, Ward Churchill!). In fact, few of you can probably believe I had the guts to write this column. But, there’s no need to worry. I can say anything about diversity because I'll soon be Black.

"But there's something else going on. The suburban riffraff - les casseurs
- are taking advantage of the situation. These are the same people who
were setting fire to cars in the autumn. They are mostly hoodlums, but
they come into the city and get in with the protesters and the next thing
you know, there is violence. This is despite the fact that they are the
very people the reforms were designed to help.
"It would be nice if the government could stand firm - like Ronald Reagan
against the air traffic controllers, or Maggie Thatcher against the coal
miners, but the French have different ideas. They treasure "solidarity"
with the workers. Most likely...the government will cave in completely. In
fact, I think it already has."

GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM

Vietnam - a nation of 83 million people on a thin strip of lush country
slammed up against the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea. To the west
lie Laos and Cambodia. Excluding various islands, the land area of Vietnam
is not much bigger than New Mexico, though it supports a population more
than 40 times as large.
In the south is Ho Chi Minh City (locally, it's still often referred to as
Saigon, even though the name officially changed in 1976). And all along
the coast on the way north are plenty of sun-kissed fishing villages and
quiet, pristine beaches - such as those found in Nha Trang. The green
jagged mountains inland, carpeted in dense misty jungles, provide a
stunning backdrop. Most of the people on the beaches are adventurous
foreigners - Americans, Germans, Australians and French. Mostly, they stay
in foreign-built resort-style buildings dotting the bay. It is usually
hot, often wet, and sometimes wetter.
The seafood is always fresh, usually alive moments before it's eaten.
Right up to the water's edge, women pull up their full nets from colorful
boats. And you're also likely to see them skillfully handling thung chais,
little round dinghies constructed of bamboo.
The women gut fish, chop squid, wrestle with shellfish and cook up
interesting pots of fish, noodles, peppers and other goodies. This is one
of the places in the world where the dollar goes a long, long way. A
family can eat like kings for $7 or less. The bird's nest soup is quite
the local dish - flavored with ginger, scallions, chunks of pigeon and
coconut milk.
In Hanoi, the capital city in the north, you see busy tree-lined streets
full of cars, cycles, scooters, and - as if to remind you of its fading
past - rickshaws. Old French villas evoke Vietnam's colonial history.
Street vendors will offer you shrimp on a stick, pho (beef noodle soup),
fruit, steamed crabs, and other assorted foods. The swirl of noise and
smells assaults your senses.
This is Vietnam. For Americans, it inevitably stirs up ugly memories, or
at least a painful chapter in U.S. history. The Vietnamese people and
countryside bear the physical and psychological scars of that
not-too-distant conflict as well. Yet, Vietnam is rapidly changing, with
time and market forces doing their parts to mend old wounds and bring new
growth. Even here, the biting winds of globalization carve new pathways
into the old country's business landscape.
Vietnam still produces a lot of old-world agricultural goods - things like
rice, coffee, cotton, tea, pepper, soybeans, sugar cane, peanuts, and
bananas. More than 60% of the work force is engaged in agriculture in some
way. However, the manufacturing and service industries are growing and
taking bigger slices of the pie as the years roll by. The Vietnamese make
garments and shoes, as well as glass, tires, and steel. They produce
cement and paper and mine for coal. But there's much more to the story.
The Vietnamese economy has quietly become one of the fastest growing in
the world, approaching the scorching pace of India and China. It's also
become a magnet for foreign capital. In 2005 alone, investment in Vietnam
totaled over $5 billion. Already, about 260 U.S. firms have invested
directly in Vietnam. In 2006, another $6 billion is expected. This
includes major technology and infrastructure projects.
In the last week of February came the most telling announcement yet. The
Vietnamese government approved Intel's plans to build the biggest single
technology project in the history of Vietnam - a chip assembly plant in Ho
Chi Minh City, an investment that could cost as much as $605 million.
This major turning point was barely mentioned in the mainstream press - if
it was noted at all. While the country had attracted investments from a
diverse range of companies, including Sony Corp. of Japan and Samsung of
South Korea, none comes close to Intel's plans.
Intel's plant will engage in the final process of the chip-making process,
in which the chips are packaged in ceramic casing and tested. The work is
labor intensive and requires a sophisticated work force, which is why
insiders are impressed with the deal. It means Intel believes the
Vietnamese can do more than the expected low-skilled jobs. More foreign
investment will surely follow Intel's lead.
The attraction? The Vietnamese work very hard for very little by Western
standards. The foreign private companies pay the best - on average, about
$60 per month. State-owned enterprises paid only $19 per month. (It's an
old myth that foreign companies go overseas and pay poorly. In fact, in
most cases, the foreign-owned companies pay more than the local
alternatives.)
Those are cheap rates, even by the standard of the Chinese. And it doesn't
take long to get things done in Vietnam.
While in China, I heard Chinese business people talk about Vietnam like
Americans talk about Mexico. Indeed, the Chinese are losing some of their
manufacturing jobs to the Vietnamese. The rise of China is the best thing
that ever happened to the economies of Southeast Asia, Vietnam in
particular. Not surprisingly, China is Vietnam's largest trading partner.
Much of what's happening in China is only beginning in Vietnam. Recently,
the state-owned Vietcombank announced plans to list its shares in Hong
Kong or Singapore. This would be Vietnam's first overseas initial public
offering. And several Western banks are taking minority positions in
Vietnamese banks, anticipating future IPOs and growth.
The market has a long way to go before it approaches the likes of even
China in terms of a developed stock and bond market with some semblance of
disclosure. Nonetheless, all great journeys begin with a humble first
step. Vietnam is on its way.

St. Paul bet on a potential rising star Tuesday night, picking the youngest of five candidates to lead the state's second-largest district in a time of declining enrollment and increased pressure to spread academic gains to all students.
Meria Carstarphen, 36, chief accountability officer for the District of Columbia Public Schools, impressed board and community members over the two-day interview process with her energy and vision.
"I am thrilled," Carstarphen said after the announcement.
She said she felt increasingly at home over the two days as she met with the school board, community members and citizens, even squeezing in time to visit six schools.
"I was smiling the whole time. I couldn't stop smiling. Every group I met, it just got better and better," she said.
The board was unanimous in its decision to hire Carstarphen.
"Together, we will do amazing things," school board chairwoman Elona Street-Stewart said after making the announcement at the district office following a morning of interviews with each candidate and several hours of deliberation.
"It was a tough decision and all five candidates brought amazing experience and talent to the table, but we ultimately felt that she would be the best fit," Street-Stewart said.
Carstarphen addressed concerns some had raised about her age and her tendency to stay in jobs for one or two years.
"I think age is a state of mind, not a matter of years," she said, and she described her state of mind as professional, well-trained and serious.
She said there's a good five to seven years of work to be done in St. Paul, and "that's not a problem for me."
Carstarphen, a native of Selma, Ala., holds doctoral and master's degrees in educational administration, planning and social policy from Harvard University and a master's in elementary and secondary education from Auburn University. She said she looks forward to making a home here. Her husband, who works in business development, will be investigating work opportunities in the Twin Cities, she said.

I am a member in good standing of the Western Pyrotechnics Association, one of many clubs across this rapidly fading bastion of freedom that strive to lawfully and safely celebrate, preserve and pass down the traditions and freedoms of the arts of fire. The Pyrotechnic Guild International is another (and the largest in the USA). There are only a handful of suppliers catering to the hobby pyrotechnic and rocketry craft, and yes, it is on a microscopic scale in comparison to mainstream public consumer product safety issues, but the nature of accidents involving fireworks and explosives attracts an inordinate amount of attention.
It was not fabricated - the CPSC issued a consent decree to Firefox, Skylighter and others (Firefox is the only one that did not sign it, and they are fighting the CPSCin court right now). Supplier records were examined and customers who primarily purchased large quantities of materials that could be used to make M-80 type items got letters from the DOJ informing them of the laws concerning the manufacture and sale of said devices, which are illegal. But the action by the CPSC has an ulterior motive in the same sense as gun control groups - don't try to solve the real problem caused by a few bad apples that existing law could take care of were it enforced - just blanket-ban everything (unless you have a license) "to protect the public". They are trying to group all hobbyists under the commercial manufacturing umbrella.
As you might guess there is not much hope of a few small businesses living off a hobby, and those hobbyists, going up against a government agency that has essentially limitless resources.

DOMENECH AND THE POST.
Red Herring

Shortly before George W. Bush's second inauguration, The Washington Post sent one of its best reporters into the heart of America to explore the "Red Sea"--that uncharted territory populated with those great unknowns who had recently voted to reelect the president. "[W]e were tired of hearing pundits tell us about 'Red America' and wanted a firsthand look," the paper's explorer declared. Here is what he discovered: "I found ordinary people with various motivations, sundry stories, personal beliefs, custom-made decisions. I suppose there are no great surprises there--these views represent many of the strands that have been collected over the past generation into the political camp we call 'conservative.'" In short, the Post uncovered what much of the United States has already known for some time: Middle America is filled with normal people with normal jobs who think rationally--and still vote Republican. So much for the blue-state media's red-state stereotypes.
Actually, not quite. Last week, the Post breathed new life into those old stereotypes by launching Red America, a blog dedicated to offering "a daily mix of commentary, analysis, and cultural criticism" from a right-wing perspective. The liberal blogosphere did not think this was such a good idea; when the Post announced it had hired Ben Domenech, a 24-year-old editor with Regnery Publishing and co-founder of the popular conservative blog RedState.com, liberal pundits met the news with full-blown hyperventilation. Josh Marshall wrote that if the editors at the Post "want to make a blogger 'Crossfire' with a firebreather on the left and on the right, they should do it. It might even be interesting. But here they've just been played by bullies and played for fools." Criticism soon turned to scrutiny, and liberal bloggers gleefully discovered that, in the past, Domenech has had a penchant for plagiarism. Three days after publishing his first post, the Post's conservative blogger had stepped down.
Domenech deserved to be let go; but in the course of celebrating his demise, liberals have missed the real lesson of this entire episode. Instead of hiring a conservative, the Post hired a caricature of one; Domenech's blog would have been less a product of red America and more a product of what blue America understands red America to be. More than anything else, the sad saga of Ben Domenech reveals just how simplistic blue-state elites have become in their understanding of American conservatism.
Before signing on with the Post, Domenech had written for publications like the New York Press, National Review Online, and The Washington Times. He was not known for producing thoughtful conservative think-pieces, or even for intrepid reporting. On the contrary, he was better known for his vitriol. Domenech, in his RedState.com blog posts, wrote that Teresa Heinz Kerry looks like an "oddly shaped egotistical ketchup-colored muppet," former TNR Editor Andrew Sullivan needs "a woman to give him some stability," and cartoonist Ted Rall is a "steaming bag of pus." He used words like "environuts." His posts often began with profound statements such as "That's ridiculous," "Yeesh, that's sad," and "That's bullcrap." He accused Los Angeles Times columnist Joel Stein of using cocaine. He described Coretta Scott King as a "Communist." He wrote that federal judges are "worse than the KKK."
What, exactly, did Brady see in Domenech? Certainly not a principled conservative journalist. Either Brady didn't read Domenech's blog posts, or he did, and they fit the ticket. If the former is true, well, shame on Brady. But the latter seems more likely. In other words, as far as Brady was concerned, Domenech--an angry, bigoted bloviator--was the face of true conservatism.
Brady isn't alone, of course. Ever since the 2004 election, liberals have been eager to confirm their stereotypes of conservatives as narrow-minded, self-righteous folk. It was only days after the election that the popular Jesusland map spread over the Internet; then came this strongly worded critique of the South. Similar, if more refined, sentiments popped up in print publications as well. The editors of Seattle's popular newsweekly, The Stranger, wrote:
Citizens of the Urban Archipelago reject heartland "values" like xenophobia, sexism, racism, and homophobia, as well as the more intolerant strains of Christianity that have taken root in this country. And we are the real Americans. They--rural, red-state voters, the denizens of the exurbs--are not real Americans. They are rubes, fools, and hate-mongers.
In its January 2005 issue, The American Prospect ran a list titled, "Red-State Values: What really goes on in the morally elite states?" Here are some of the statistics from the list (emphases in original):
In red states in 2001, there were 572,000 divorces ... Blue states recorded 340,000
As of 2000, 37 states had statewide policies or procedures to address domestic violence ... All 13 that didn't were red states
The 5 states with the highest rates of alcohol dependence or abuse among 12- to 17-year-olds are also red states
Residents of the all-red Mountain States are the most likely to have had 3 or more sexual partners in the previous year ... Residents of all-blue New England are the least likely to have had more than 1 partner in that span
The per capita rate of gonorrhea in red states was 140 per 100,000 ... In blue states, it was 99 per 100,000
Take that, you divorced, wife-beating, gonorrhea-stricken drunks.
To be sure, after the 2004 election, liberals needed to blow off steam. That's understandable. And there are some legitimate reasons why liberals stereotype conservatives the way they do. The right has its share of bigots and xenophobes. And vitriolic right-wing pundits like Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin always seem to shout the loudest. But just because these strains of conservatism exist doesn't mean that this is what conservatism is reducible to. If the Post really wants to add a meaningful voice to the political debate, it should know better than to simply turn to Ann Coulter's male counterpart.
One question still remains: Who will Brady pick as Domenech's replacement? He might want to take a look at these lists (here and here), compiled by Slate's Jack Shafer when The New York Times was looking for columnists to replace William Safire. For the most part, Shafer's suggestions include respected, or at least respectable, conservatives: Heather Mac Donald, Steve Chapman, John Ellis, Stuart Taylor Jr., Jonah Goldberg, Mark Steyn, and James Lileks. Then again, the Post will probably pass on all of them: Not one conforms to a liberal's caricature of what a conservative should be.

Six months ago, the Federal Reserve quietly announced that as of March
20, 2006, they would no longer publish "M3" Data. The "M3" was the
amount of cash the government printed to put into circulation,
propping-up the U.S. economy.
As of eight days ago, M3 data is no longer being reported, so there is
no way for the public, investors or bond holders to know how much
currency exists - and no way to gauge how much a "dollar" is truly
worth.
Three separate sources in the U.S. Treasury have told me that this
week, the federal reserve ordered TWO TRILLION dollars to be printed!
The U.S. Treasury is allegedly running printing presses 24/7 to
accommodate that order. Treasury employees were specifically ORDERED
not to talk about this to anyone because it could cause economic
collapse.
Even worse, I was also told that the whole Immigration Amnesty Debate
(especially the well-funded well-attended protests) was deliberately
scheduled to take place now, to divert attention from this massive
printing/devaluation of the U.S. Dollar. The feds allegedly figured
that by the time anyone found out, they could smooth things over. They
figured wrong. Surprise, boys, you've been exposed!
Watch for Gold and silver to skyrocket in price within days as the
world wises up and begins dumping the U.S. Dollar.

Victim of Smear Campaign Gets Even With Morris Dees

Morris Dees, who makes a lucrative career out of smearing many decent U.S. organizations, was visibly shaken at what he expected to be a "sweetheart" event when a pro-Southern group on his hit list challenged him on his lurid past, The Times Examiner of Greenville, S.C., reports.
Dees spoke at the University of South Carolina's "Carolina Productions Lecture Series," a student-run campus organization, on Feb. 27. An estimated 300 people, including more than 30 law enforcement personnel, attended. Some professors ordered students to attend; some gave extra credit for attending. Considering how embarrassing it proved for Dees, his faculty cheerleaders probably regret such pressure.
Dees labeled the League of the South as "racist" and "terrorist" in publications put out by his Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) and public statements.
But the League is "racially neutral with members of different races," said Lexington attorney Larry Salley, a member of the board.
H.K. Edgetton of Black Mountain, a black man noted for supporting southern heritage, called Dees a "poverty pimp" during the question-and-answer period.
But it was Salley who had the most fun with Dees.
"Salley prepared and passed out a well-documented brochure that appeared to be the official program, featuring Dees's photograph and the statement ‘With Justice for All' on the cover," The Times Examiner reported.
Inside, after the anticipated Dees-friendly words, the brochure transitioned into the harsh facts with footnotes citing the source of the material. Dees disciples, in blissful ignorance, helped hand out the brochures.
One of the 14 documented statements is from Harper's magazine:
"The cover story of Harper's magazine's November 2000 issue exposed the SPLC's alarmist fund-raising tactics with which it raises large sums that are not used to help those it purports to serve. The Southern Center for Human Rights' Stephen Bright charged that [Dees] is a fraud who has milked a lot of very wonderful, well-intentioned people. If it's got headlines, Morris is there."
Quoting from the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, CIV2114 (1979), the brochure says:
"Of all the damning indictments against Morris Dees, the worst comes from his closest connection. He was sued by his ex-wife, Maureene Bass Dees, who alleged that he had committed incest with his stepdaughter and future daughter-in-law."
"When Dees saw the program he was visibly shaken," the paper quotes Salley. "I stood up and asked him why 55 percent of the SPLC's income went into his pocket, and he tried to shout me down. Then other members of our group tried to ask him similar questions, and they shut down the question-and-answer period."
Carolina Productions "is taxpayer funded and in the past they have had groups such as transvestite exotic dancers," Salley said.
The following night Dees spoke at Western Carolina University where about 200 attendees received the same brochure.
Dees refused to comment on the well-deserved roasting he took.
