The BPP alone has exposed outrage over the new Bramley Shopping Centre leases which forced some popular traders to close up shop. Other traders could close soon. Even if new tenants are found, the higher rents we revealed will mean extra costs being passed on to already-grumbling shoppers. On our website and leaflets the BPP has asked: Is the Centre closing or being improved? Is it earmarked for redevelopment as commercial offices or expensive, private flats? Or will we have a centre too expensive for we shoppers to afford?
The BPP recently issued local Labour MP, Mr. John Battle, a challenge: to confront the Centre owners and to publicly speak up for his local shoppers. He has failed to do so. Our locally-compiled website article on the subject, in contrast, was published by an international Internet news agency. Yet New Labour's MP in Bramley and Stanningley Ward still offers no public defence of his own constituents! The Council, he says, does not own the Centre and cannot interfere in how it is run. So much for New Labour in Bramley and Leeds. So much for Democracy.
Bramley and Stanningley Ward has thousands of low-income families with children. Many are single parent families. John Battle says that this Ward has almost 15,000 senior citizens. How have these struggling locals coped with the loss of a butcher's shop and a hardware store, with the transfer of Morrison's to Somerfield and the resultant higher prices? How will they and others cope as Centre rents and prices continue to rise?
Bramley Shopping Centre's owners should remember that we live and shop here. Our Council Tax pays for the utility services, the emergency services and the policing support from which the Centre owners benefit. We, too, pay for the road networks and the public transport services which bring thousands of shoppers to the Centre. The people of Bramley and the BPP in Bramley therefore demand answers from Bramley Shopping Centre's owners. We demand to be part of and to influence the discussion process, to keep our popular traders, to be heard and to have our views acted upon.
Unlike Tony Blair in far-off Westminster, Mr. Battle is the man who supposedly carries the political can for the householders and shoppers, the workers and voters of Bramley and Stanningley. Over and over, however, he and local Labour Councillors have ignored the Voice of the People in this area. In spite of this, New Labour's local MP and his City Council cronies have somehow, until now, survived in office.
Having consistently ignored the Bramley Shopping Centre issue, around which Eddy Morrison and the BPP are now attracting such growing support, Labour's City Hall will, in the 04 May 2006 municipal elections, discover the price of that deafness. What would happen if a world-renowned scientist and evolutionary ecologist told hundreds of his colleagues that 90 percent of the human race needed to be wiped out by exposure to ebola or some other deadly virus?
Apparently, according to a scientist who claims to have witnessed such a remarkable event one month ago, the fiend would get a standing ovation and an award.
That's the story being told by Forrest Mims III, a member of the Texas Academy of Science, chairman of its environmental science section and editor of the Citizen Scientist.
The speech Mims heard was delivered by Eric R. Pianka, a lizard expert from the University of Texas. It is recounted in detail in the latest issue of the Citizen Scientist.
"We're no better than bacteria," Mims quoted Pianka as saying in his condemnation of the human race, which, he claimed, is overpopulating the Earth.
The only way to save the planet for the rest of the species is to reduce the human population to 10 percent of its current number.
"He then showed solutions for reducing the world's population in the form of a slide depicting the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," writes Mims. "War and famine would not do, he explained. Instead, disease offered the most efficient and fastest way to kill the billions that must soon die if the population crisis is to be solved. Pianka then displayed a slide showing rows of human skulls, one of which had red lights flashing from its eye sockets. AIDS is not an efficient killer, he explained, because it is too slow. His favorite candidate for eliminating 90 percent of the world's population is airborne Ebola (Ebola Reston), because it is both highly lethal and it kills in days, instead of years. However, Professor Pianka did not mention that Ebola victims die a slow and torturous death as the virus initiates a cascade of biological calamities inside the victim that eventually liquefy the internal organs."

Platteville - As waitress Sharon Johnson sees it, the newly enacted statewide smoking ban is less about protecting people's health than about snuffing out their rights.
"If they can do this, what else can they do?" she says, referring to the legislators who voted to prohibit smoking in virtually all public places beginning July 1.
"It's pretty obvious where this is going. Our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness at this point is gone. I suppose the next thing they'll do is take away my right to remodel my house the way I want to do it."
Such libertarian sentiments run deep in Platteville, one of many rural Colorado towns where tobacco smoke is as routine a sight in bars and coffee shops as cardboard cups in Starbucks. As Johnson's co-worker and fellow smoker Jill Frasier puts it, "Quite frankly, I think this is wrong. Fifty-eight people decided our lives are going to change, and they're just cramming it down our throats."

He has been featured in various films about Auschwitz, particularly Shoah by Claude Lanzmann.
Everything went well for him until the day at the Zündel trial in 1985 when he was cross-examined
mercilessly. He was then shown to be an impostor.
It was revealed that he had completely made up the number and location of the "gas chambers"
and the crematories in his famous 1944 report.
His 1964 book opened with a purported January 1943 visit by Himmler to Birkenau to inaugurate
a new crematorium with "gas chamber." Actually, the last visit by Himmler to Auschwitz took
place in July of 1942, and in January 1943 the first of the new crematories was still far from
finished.
Thanks, apparently, to some special gift of memory (that he called "special mnemonic principles"
or "special mnemonical method") and to a real talent for being everywhere at once, Vrba had
calculated that in the space of 25 months (April 1942 to April 1944) the Germans had "gassed"
1,765,000 Jews at Birkenau alone, including 150,000 Jews from France.
But in 1978, Serge Klarsfeld, in his Memorial to the Deportation of the Jews from France, had
been forced to conclude that, for the entire length of the war, the Germans had deported a total of
75,721 Jews from France to all their concentration camps.
The gravest aspect of this is that the figure of 1,765,000 Jews "gassed" at Birkenau had also been
used in a document (L-022) at the main Nuremberg trial. Attacked on all sides by Zündel's
lawyer, the impostor had no other recourse than to invoke, in Latin, the "licentia poetarum," or

CCWs: Good Idea, but Solve Only Part of the Problem
Back in the bad old days when American states were managed by leftists, defending yourself from crime in public was tough to do.
However, since conservatives took control of many U.S. states in the 1990s, those states now have what is known as the CCW - concealed carry weapon permit, which allows law-abiding citizens to carry hidden firearms in public. That way, when a nig-nog approaches you in a parking lot and says "gimyodoughhonky" [translated from negro-speak, that means "give me your money, White guy"], you are not totally defenseless.
However, there is a major catch to CCWs. They are not valid if you fly on an airplane [1]. In other words, if you live in, say, Nevada, and you must fly to a heavily-nig-nog city like, say, Chicago, you cannot take your gun with you onboard the plane via your CCW. So if Jamal LaMarcus LaTrell Leroy Jones wants to rob you in a parking lot during your stay in the Windy City, he will, and without your gun you will have to hope that he doesn't shoot you while doing so. In other words, CCWs are somewhat limited. In fact, there are quite a few places where CCWs are not legally valid, e.g., federal buildings [2]. Maybe negroes don't rob people in federal parking lots?
Of course, if America was a republic, CCWs would be "good" everywhere - on land, in the air and on the sea. But since America is no longer a republic but is instead a democrazy full of eeekwalitykooks, you can forget about that good-everywhere idea becoming reality anytime soon. In fact, as non-Whites - famous for their anti-gun attitudes - fill our U.S. Congress and our state legislatures via something called "voting" [3], CCW permits will likely fade into the sunset, so maybe you should enjoy them while you can.

An ordinary night ends in a horrible moment

The first stop for Alan D. Reitter and his four friends was the Refuge Bar & Grill in downtown Minneapolis' Warehouse District.
They got there about 8 p.m., and after a few drinks and a lot of talking, the fivesome left about 11:30 p.m.
They were walking along S. 6th Street when Abby Phillips, 27, of Maple Grove, froze.
"I thought I heard fireworks," she said. Only when she saw people running did it dawn on her to take cover. As she dropped to the ground, "I saw him lying on the ground," she said.
Reitter, 31, of Minnetonka, a mortgage underwriter who grew up in Redwood Falls, Minn., had been fatally shot in the head. Police said he was the innocent victim of a man who, apparently unprovoked, fired into a crowd of people.
Police arrested Derick D. Holliday, 21, of Minneapolis, moments after the shooting. He could be charged as early as today.
Kirk Johnson said he was standing near the doorway of Gluek's Restaurant & Bar Friday night when he saw a man running diagonally across 6th Street toward him. As the man approached, he raised his arm and fired a gun, Johnson said.
"I couldn't believe it was happening," he said. "I didn't have time [to think]. People started diving behind cars in the parking lot. I don't think he was aiming at anyone in particular."
'Completely senseless'
Authorities officially released Reitter's name Sunday, while friends and family members mourned his loss.
"This is completely senseless," said Phillips. "This should never have happened."
Phillips said she, Reitter, his girlfriend and two others were headed to the Lone Tree Bar & Grill, across the street from Block E, when Reitter was shot.
Police said that a large fight had broken out near Block E on Friday night, but authorities said that the suspect told them he wasn't trying to defend himself when he opened fire.
Police and city officials have expressed dismay and frustration at the brazen killing. They noted that there were about 30 officers around Block E on Friday night, in addition to numerous cameras that have been installed in the past year.
Yet even with those measures, there sometimes is little police can do to stop such an arbitrary act, said Assistant Police Chief Tim Dolan.
"A genuinely nice person"
On Sunday, friends remembered Reitter as outgoing, outspoken and a family-oriented sports lover.
When Janet Ellingworth first met Reitter, he was a shy, quiet seventh-grader in the Redwood Valley High School English class she taught. He and his family had recently moved to Redwood Falls from a farm in nearby Morton. But it didn't take him long to establish himself.
"I remember that he quickly made a lot of friends because he was a genuinely nice person and he was funny," said Ellingworth, who lives next door to the Reitter family and watched Alan grow up.
Reitter was the youngest of three children and the family's only son, friends said. As an adult, he lavished affection on his nieces and nephews.
Moving into a new condo and playing Texas Hold 'Em aren't usually laugh riots, but Reitter's sisters said their little brother had "a gift" at turning everyday occurrences into happy memories.
"He just always made our family fun," said sister Cathy Kruse. "Oh my gosh we would laugh," said another sister, Jean Parsons.
Plans for the future
Reitter was making big plans, too. He had purchased a silver Mercedes last fall. There was talk of marriage with his girlfriend, Amy Resberg.
High school chum Ben Stoterau said kids always gathered after football practice at Reitter's house, where they played Super Nintendo and wolfed down pizza. The two remained fast friends as adults, spending summer evenings at the Reitter's lakefront property in Spicer, having drinks at the Redwood Falls VFW and occasionally meeting up in the very area where Reitter was shot.
"We've walked by [Gluek's] so many times and never been scared," Stoterau said. "When these things happen, you can't fathom ... it's surreal."
Phillips first met Reitter about seven years ago when she was a hostess at Grandma's Saloon & Eatery in Plymouth and he was a bartender. Over the weekend, she left a simple memorial for her friend at the shooting site.
Visitation for Reitter will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls.
"I can't come to terms with him being gone," Parsons said. "I keep thinking, I'll call him up and ask him a question. It's just unbelievably difficult to make any sense ..."

With its sprawling meatpacking plant, illegal immigration is a fact of life in Worthington. But the real issue for local officials is telling the good people from the bad in a society where so many live in shadow.
WORTHINGTON, Minn. —l The Worthington home with the new garage was a welcome wagon for the undocumented.
Mattresses were stacked along one side of the garage. Tables and chairs were displayed as in a department store. Large plastic bags of children?s clothing, each marked for age groups and gender, awaited new-arriving parents.
And inside the house, a fresh birth certificate and Social Security card could be run off the laser printer for $1,150.
"It was a one-stop, new-immigrant-type shop in a residential neighborhood," said Sgt. Kevin Flynn, a detective with the Worthington Police Department who helped raid the home last year, leading to charges against the proprietor.
Illegal immigration is a part of everyday life in Worthington, a southwestern Minnesota farm town whose 18,000-hog-a-day Swift & Co. plant is one of Minnesota?s biggest immigrant job magnets. Officials here have a clear-eyed view of the problem: They want to welcome the masses of good people and root out the bad ones preying on them.
But that's not easy when you don't know who's who.
"I would say that the vast majority of the people that are workers here are probably illegal," said Worthington Mayor Alan Oberloh. "But that's not the issue that we're trying to deal with. We're trying to deal with the people that are extorting and taking advantage of the ones that are here trying to work."
The workers, now mostly from Central America rather than Mexico, purchase fake documents that get them into the workplace. They are "hot-bedded" into crowded, fire-trap apartments. They wire millions home. They drive without real licenses, live in fear of deportation and have been known to hide in snowbanks after fender-benders.
Worthington, population 11,283, its old downtown square now dotted with mercados and eateries from these old homelands, has taken its story to politicians. Gov. Tim Pawlenty, U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton, U.S. Rep. Gil Gutknecht and other leaders have come to Worthington to listen.
It's a complicated tale.
Locals point to changes that began with Swift?s decision in the late 1980s to boost production and add a second shift. The immigrant flow began, including workers from Asia and Africa and huge streams crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. What was once a coveted, single-breadwinner?s job evolved into a lower-wage position dominated by immigrants.
Whether this is a great American success story or a tale of ruthless exploitation is not the concern of Flynn, Oberloh and other Worthington officials. They have seen their population rise at a time of rural declines. They welcome the new workers, new businesses, new homeowners and, eventually they hope, new citizens.
"We're not against immigrants whatsoever," said Police Chief Mike Cumiskey. "We're against criminals. We're against the fact that the federal government doesn?t allow us to ID people. If we can solve that problem, every other problem gets better for us."
The ID drama plays out at Swift & Co.'s sprawling pork processing plant on the edge of town.

Despite allegations against their employer, workers were willing to endure for paycheck

For four years, Alejandro Patino-Velasquez was an illegal immigrant working in the Twin Cities. He didn't mind the 12-hour days or the six-day weeks, and the money was good compared with Mexico.
But it ended last December, after government agents spent months watching him and others who toiled at Udupi Café, a popular Indian restaurant in Columbia Heights. The workers lived a block away in a duplex owned by their boss.
After investigators came knocking, the 23-year-old kitchen worker and several others wound up in jail for two months, held as material witnesses against their employer, restaurant owner Nagappan Mylappan Chettiar.
The case, settled by a plea bargain last month, provides a candid glimpse into the lives of illegal immigrants, who by one estimate number as many as 85,000 in Minnesota. It also shows the lengths to which foreign workers will go to get here, sometimes enduring pay and conditions that American law declares exploitative.
"It's a little bit difficult because you can't really make ends meet on the salary you make there. That's the reason I decided to come here," said Francisco Robles-Castillo, a police officer in Mexico, and one of five workers who related bits and pieces of their stories in depositions before being deported.
Through a translator, the four Mexicans described their separate 1,600-mile, zigzag journeys to Minnesota from Chalcatzingo, a town in the southern state of Morelos.
Patino-Velasquez was the first to arrive, in April 2000 or 2001. The former construction worker said he crossed the border in Arizona and came to Minnesota because he had friends here. After two other jobs, he was hired at Chettiar's Madras Palace restaurant in Eagan.
He and the others said Chettiar didn't ask them for any identifying documents, contrary to federal law. Four testified that they lacked any work papers; Patino-Velasquez said he had purchased a counterfeit resident alien card for use at two previous jobs but didn't have to present it at Chettiar's restaurant.
Robles-Castillo arrived next, after hearing from Patino-Velasquez that the restaurant had job openings. A few months later, Robles-Castillo borrowed $2,000 from Chettiar to smuggle his wife in from Mexico.
His wife, Maria De La Cruz Amatitla-Pavon, 32, crossed the border at San Ysidro, near San Diego. Later, a fourth Mexican would join them — Alejandro's cousin, Jose Luis Patino-Barranco. He, too, paid $2,000 to be brought in.
Meanwhile, three employees from India arrived on visas. One entered the United States on a tourist visa in Hawaii, while the other two had visas from working on cruise ships.
THE WORKERS' LIVES
The Mexican workers spoke Spanish, while Chettiar's native tongue was the Tamil language. He knew them by their nicknames or first names; they said they knew him only as "Naga" or el padron — the boss.
They worked from 9:30 in the morning to 10 at night, six days a week, with breaks for meals. Most were paid less than the state's minimum wage.
Most started as dishwashers and later were promoted — with raises — to food-preparation tasks. Amatitla-Pavon cleaned the restaurant.
Every other week, they testified, Chettiar or a manager would hand them an envelope, labeled with their name, filled with cash.
Before their detention, Alejandro made $850 every two weeks, Francisco $800, Maria $700 and Jose $600. No taxes were deducted.
But the workers said Chettiar treated them well.
"I really liked the job," Patino-Barranco said. "I liked the job and I was happy."
A tearful Amatitla-Pavon said Chettiar was going to let her visit her ailing father in Mexico, but her father died before she could go.
Chettiar housed the seven employees rent-free in a duplex he owned about two blocks from the restaurant. The Mexicans lived on the north side of the building, the Indians on the south side. The workers' food was provided as well.
The arrangement led to Chettiar's indictment on charges of harboring illegal aliens. But the workers testified it was a good deal, enabling them to send nearly all their pay to family in Mexico.
"He gave us our house and food for free, so our salary was free and clear and thank heavens, we were able to pay our children's expenses with it," Amatitla-Pavon testified.
Two of the workers said Chettiar brought them to meet with lawyers in hopes of legalizing their status in the United States.
DEFENDANT'S COMPLAINT
Chettiar was indicted in January by a grand jury on charges of aiding, abetting, harboring and transporting illegal immigrants. Prosecutors agreed to drop 13 of the 14 charges and he admitted to one count of knowingly hiring unauthorized aliens, a felony.
He is the first Minnesota employer prosecuted for illegal hiring in more than three years.
Before Chettiar struck the deal, his attorneys had argued that Chettiar was unfairly singled out for something that many other Minnesota businesses do all the time. They complained that defendants in two other illegal-hiring cases were allowed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges, including a personnel employee at the Swift & Co. meatpacking plant in Worthington who sold work papers to illegal immigrants.
Prosecutors responded that Chettiar was targeted because of overwhelming evidence that he harbored and helped transport illegal aliens. Magistrate Judge Janie S. Mayeron ruled that Chettiar failed to prove he was being selectively prosecuted.
Chettiar is awaiting sentencing, said his attorney, John Lundquist. Based on the plea agreement, Chettiar could receive from six months of home detention to 18 months in prison and a fine between $2,000 and $30,000. He also has agreed to forfeit his Shoreview home and the Columbia Heights duplex to the government. He will surrender his permanent resident status and return to India. He is eligible to apply for readmission to the United States.

how important decisions are made. The press would make sure of it.
Congress would insist upon it. And then, the enlightened voters would go

no more upheavals, no revolutions, no convulsions. Never again would she
