MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin has pledged cash bonuses
to Russian women who give birth to two or more children to reverse
what he says is the gravest problem facing contemporary Russia:
a declining population.
He used his annual state-of-the-nation address yesterday to warn
that Russia's population of 143 million was falling by an average of
700,000 each year, a figure comparable to the population of Bahrain.
The problem is regarded as a national security issue since large areas
of Siberia and the far east of Russia are dangerously under-populated.
It is an anomaly that has stoked fears among ordinary Russians that
they will one day be usurped by migrant workers from neighboring China,
whose 1.3 billion people are packed into a territory considerably smaller
than Russia, the world's largest country.
Mr. Putin made no mention of such fears but he warned the problem
had become critical.
"The most acute problem in modern-day Russia is demography," he told
the country's great and good in the Kremlin's Marble Hall, to frequent
outbursts of frenzied applause.
"We have to stimulate the birth of a second child in every family.
This is what we need to resolve this problem: first, a lower death rate;
second, an efficient migration policy; and third, a higher birth rate."
Proposes to tap oil revenues to solve problem
About 80 Russians die every hour, often due to preventable lifestyle
diseases such as alcoholism, and life expectancy for Russian men is
just 59 years. Mr. Putin conceded that poverty was putting off many
would-be mothers and promised to dip into the country's growing pot
of oil revenues to tackle the problem.
"What stops a woman deciding to have a second child?," he asked.
"Poor living conditions, limited income [and] sometimes, God help us,
the thought of whether they will be able to feed the child or not."
Mr. Putin's solution is a 10-year plan which, it is estimated, will cost
the Kremlin the equivalent of £80m a year. Quoting the country's most
famous living writer, Aleksander Solzhenitsyn, he called for the revival
of "ancient caring attitudes" towards the family.
Under Mr. Putin's proposals, which take effect in January, women who
give birth to a second child will receive a one-off cash bonus of 250,000
rubles (about £5,000). In a country where many scrape by on a monthly
wage equivalent to just £160, the bonus is a generous one. Child benefit
will also be increased, from the current level of 700 rubles a month to
1,500 rubles for the first child in the family.
Women who give birth to a second child can claim a further 3,000 rubles
a month and will receive financial help with child care.
Counters Washington criticism
Although he devoted much of his speech to domestic issues, Mr. Putin
also found time to deal subtly with harsh criticism of his policies from
Washington.
Dick Cheney, the U.S. Vice-President, has accused Russia of backsliding
on democracy and of using its energy resources as a political weapon,
but Mr. Putin dismissed the allegations.
He said: "Not everyone has been able to move on from the ... prejudices
which are a leftover from the epoch of global confrontation despite the
fact that there have been fundamental changes in the world. Where is all
this pathos about protecting human rights and democracy when it comes
to the need to pursue their own interests?"
He also made it clear that Russia was actively rearming and was poised
substantially to boost military spending, which he said was currently 25
times lower than Washington's.

apparatus, Mossad, slaughtered at least 530 Iraqi scientists and academic
professors.
Persistent Israeli hit squads against Iraqi scientists had been active
in Iraq since April 2003, but the latest chapter was uncovered on Tuesday,
14 June 2005 by the Palestine Information Center which, citing a report
compiled by the United States Department of State and intended for the
American President, stated that Israeli and foreign agents sent by Mossad,
in cooperation with United States, to Iraq, killed at least 350 Iraqi scientists
and more than 200 university professors and academic personalities .
According to the report, which was referred to the U.S. president George W.
Bush, Mossad agents had been operating in Iraq with the aim of liquidating
Iraqi nuclear and biology scientists, among other scientists, and prominent
university professors.
That was after the U.S. failed to persuade those scientists to cooperate
with or work for it.
"Israeli commandos had been operating on Iraqi territory for more than a year,
the focus of their activities being the assassination of Iraqi scientists and
intellectuals.
The Zionists resorted to the large-scale assassination campaign after the
failure of American efforts that started immediately after the American
occupation of Iraq, aimed at attracting a number of Iraqi scientists to
cooperate and go to work in the United States," The Palestine Information
Center quoted the report as saying.
"Some Iraqi scientists were forced to work in American research centers;
however, the majority of them refused to cooperate in certain fields and fled
the U.S. to other countries", it further stated.
The Pentagon agreed with the suggestion of Mossad, which believed that
the best way to get rid of those scientists was to "physically eliminate them".
The American security service provided Israel with complete biographies on
the Iraqi scientists and academics to facilitate killing them, the report said,
adding that the Mossad campaign targeting Iraqi scientists is still underway.

A festival received racist mail from people upset that an African-American
woman was being honored as 'Miss Viking Fest', but it sparked an outpouring
of love from the community instead.
Racist Hate Mail Against Poulsbo Festival Backfires
POULSBO - The words are ugly and vicious, and they sent a chill through a
local festival.
Racist hate mail sent to Poulsbo is directed at a young African-American
woman who is "Miss Viking Fest".
But the hate mail has sparked an outpouring of love.
"Little girls," says Jasmine Campbell, " I think they recognize me when I
have my crown on. They're like 'Wow!' It feels really good to say hi to
them."
Campbell loves being this year's Miss Viking Fest. The yearly Poulsbo
festival is a celebration of all things Scandinavian. In spite of its
heritage, no one was surprised when the articulate, pretty young woman won
this year's competition.
"You don't have to be of Viking stock," says Kathi Foresee, Viking Fest
secretary, "I don't even know that all of us that work on the organization
are of Viking stock," she laughs.
But then came the hate mail. At least a dozen racist e-mails - all from
outside of Poulsbo - asked festival organizers how they could let a black
woman represent a Viking Festival.
At first Jasmine says it made her, "feel really mad because you want to find
out who they are, and then after that kind of the hurt, hurtfulness about
it."
Poulsbo police are investigating the hate mail. They also plan to keep an
extra close eye out during the festival to make sure that people coming to
the festival don't plan on causing trouble.
But as news slowly leaked out about the hate mail - something began
happening in town.
We asked people on the street their reaction: "I'm disgusted," Naomi Durst
told us. When Linda Melseth found out, "this just upsets me and makes me
sick."
And folks who might have ignored Miss Viking Fest a week ago are now coming
out of the woodwork. Dan Downing crossed the street when he saw Campbell,
just to shake her hand and congratulate her.
"It's great having you represent this area and congratulations on winning
the prize you deserve it," he said. And then he just had to add about the
people who sent the hate mail, "those jerks need to be removed from the gene
pool."
Poulsbo - land of the Vikings - is opening its arms.
"The outpouring has been swift and great," says Campbell's mother Peggy
Stanley. "The vast majority are there for her and support her and love her."
So, hate mail messages that could have wrecked Viking Fest instead are
giving Poulsbo one more reason to celebrate what it stands for.
"It feels good," adds Campbell, "it feels good to know the community is
behind you."
Viking Fest begins Friday May 19, and continues through that Sunday with the
parade on Saturday May 20 at noon.

The recent debate over immigration and the inevitable backlash from the brown community have made headline news throughout the nation. Despite the broad coverage of the anti-H.R. 4437 movement by the mainstream media, they have failed to address the real issues concerning immigration reform. They do not dare venture into the root of the problem, for they know that it has nothing to do with terrorism or border security. In reality, immigration reform in America is driven by widespread xenophobia, the colonizer's mentality, and yes, plain old racism.
Now, with Minutemen on the border and the President promising National Guard deployment there, the anti-Mexican sentiment and reactionary xenophobia in this country has been manifested in a video game. "Border Patrol," which is credited to the bigoted neo-Nazi Tom Metzger, puts you in the role of a hunter/murderer who patrols the southern border with Mexico. Your objective: "Keep them out.at any cost!" "Them," by the game's definition, are the "wetbacks" trying to cross the border from Mexico.
As if the mere concept of a game that requires you to shoot indigenous migrants were not insulting enough, Metzger identified each character with a common stereotype of Mexican people.
The "Mexican nationalist" holds a Mexican flag and totes two guns as he runs across the river. The "drug smuggler" carries a bag of marijuana on his back. The most offensive target is the "breeder," a pregnant Mexican woman who lugs two children behind her. In true neo-Nazi fashion, the author exhibits an obvious lack of respect for all women, identifying those who give us life with the label of an animal. The game credits you with four kills if you shoot her - one for the mother, one for each child, and one for the unborn baby.
This "kill them all" mentality isn't mere fantasy - it's Western history relived on a video screen. No mainstream video game better illustrates the point than "Gun," set in the American Old West. Colton White, a hunter turned gunslinger, must kill Apache Indians in order to "advance." As White, you slaughter the Apache people, scalping as many as you can with your "scalping knife." The message of these games is clear - genocide against indigenous people is still accepted and encouraged in the US.
Since the introduction of television in the US, indigenous people have been portrayed as villains, savages, rivals of righteous white cowboys against whom anything goes. In modern times one can see the same relationship in the struggle between the "upright" white police officer and brown skinned gang members. Racism against Indians has always been commonplace, but these "games" take it to new proportions.
The purpose of the games is threefold: as a recruitment tool for hate groups; they portray people of color as sub-human; they serve to desensitize the public and potential recruits to very real crimes against humanity, like mass deportations, hate crimes, and mass incarceration. If the people can be numbed to this brutality and convinced that the targets are sub-human, the next step will be one we have seen before - genocide.
Europeans colonists engaged in the wholesale slaughter and enslavement of Indians and Africans with no remorse. 100 million Native Americans - our ancestors - and 100 million Africans were ultimately killed at the hands of white colonialists and slavers. European culture was desensitized to these atrocities by the dehumanization of non-whites. This condition is known as the colonizer's mentality, and it is recreated, and meant to be recreated, in the mind of everyone playing these "games."
The neo-Nazi "National Alliance," creators of the video game Ethnic Cleansing, knows this all too well. Released on Resistance Records, a low-budget white nationalist label, Ethnic Cleansing encourages you to play as a skinhead or a noose-wielding Klan member. You patrol the streets of a city which has been devastated by gangs of "sub-humans." From the words of the creators, you "run through the ghetto blasting away various blacks and spics."
Ethnic cleansing in the US is not an implausible course. The government is already building concentration camps for migrants. Soon, the law will allow them to stop anybody on the streets with brown skin to ask for proof of citizenship. We have been stripped of our rights by the Patriot Act. The American Indian holocaust is very real; it has endured the test of time, and it continues, both in the real world and in the media. These "games" are nothing but video genocide.

Iran: Euro to replace dollar as oil currency
In July Iran will ditch the dollar in favour of the euro as the currency in which it will accept payments for its oil and natural gas exports, Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced Friday.
The switch, first mooted months ago, was expected but Ahmadinejad's decision comes just as Washington is stepping up pressure on other United Nations Security Council members to act against Tehran for flouting agreements taken with the UN's nuclear watchdog.
Ahmadinejad's announcement, made in Baku, Azerbaijan where the Iranian leader is attending a regional economics conference, appears aimed at weakening the United States' resolve to seek sanctions against Iran if it does not comply with the UN International Agency for Atomic Energy's demands.
Some observers beleive the Iranian move could deal a severe blow the the American currency as many central banks from oil importing nations could choose to stock up their currency reserves with euros rather than dollars.

The Conservative Party leadership may have seen a temporary respite from
their declining electoral support in last week's council election results,
but some things remain rotten in the State of Tory HQ and today's revelation
that, for the first time in that party's history, quotas based on gender and
ethnicity are to be imposed on local constituency associations in
preparation for the next general elections appear to have initiated talk of
widespread rebellion amongst once loyal and hard working grass roots
members.
Dozens of perfectly able bodied white males with decades of political
experience and demonstrable loyalty have been sidelined as prospective
parliamentary candidates in target wards, to make way for female and ethnic
minority candidates. In many cases the names chosen are totally
inappropriate for the constituency and totally lacking in experience. The
introduction of quotas by Tony Blair-lite, David Cameron has shocked the
party faithful.
Any organisation, whether it happens to be a global corporation, national
political party, family business or community association can only survive
by employing the best people for the job. Awarding appointments and
providing placements based on arbitrary notions such as "to be
representative of the population" mean absolutely nothing if quality of
officeholder/employee is sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.
The Conservative Party will have to learn this lesson the hard way -it means
falling numbers of members, declining donations and more tangibly,
experienced office holders; the men and women who devote many hours of their
own time and who are the very fabric of the party, quitting in disgust.
First defection
David Cameron's first high profile rebellion over this issue of imposition
of PC quotas was announced this evening (14th) as a Lincolnshire Councillor
told the Press he was quitting the Conservative Party and switching to the
BNP.
The Reverend Robert West, a founding member of the Christian Council of
Britain was recently suspended by the London based Tory leadership after he
attended a meeting of the local BNP.
This evening in a press release Rev. West, the elected councillor for
Holbeach Town Ward on South Holland District Council stated why he was now
the BNP's 55th councillor.
Refugee
"I have decided to seek refuge from political correctness by applying for
asylum with the British National Party - Britain's finest and most decent
party - in our country's hour of need.
"The Conservative Party's list of candidates which deliberately exclude
white male candidates in favour of women, non-white and homosexual or
lesbian candidates, is discrimination of the worst kind."
Rev. West said he had been a lecturer in political philosophy and equal
opportunities law and taught under franchise at the universities of
Nottingham and East Anglia. He is now a supply teacher but understandably
for fear of losing his job he would not reveal at which schools.
Suspended
Conservative deputy chairman Eric Pickle said: "Robert West was suspended
about a month ago. He made inquiries into appealing that decision. His
behaviour was a matter of concern for some time and following his latest
indiscretion of speaking at a BNP meeting, his appeal is unlikely to
succeed."
BNP organisers in the West Midlands, Yorkshire, London and Lancashire have,
for some time, been conducting discrete talks with at least a score of
elected representatives currently holding a Conservative Party membership
card, plus it should be noted a few from other parties. Last week's election
results changed the colour of the political map in over a dozen local
authorities and many Conservative Councillors who are looking very isolated,
have conveyed and reinforced their sense of vulnerability to BNP organisers
in their area. In many cases the slickly presented yet metropolitan and
isolated Tory HQ have laid the blame of failure at the doors of those local
associations; accusing some associations of "ineptitude" and criticising
some Chairmen for "dragging their heels" in implementing the new changes
recommended by David Cameron's new leadership team.
The UK's fastest growing party warmly welcomes Rev. West as the BNP's 55th
councillor; his years of experience of being a district councillor will be
invaluable to our growing team of elected representatives. His name can
tonight be proudly added to our list of councillors and our pens are poised
ready to add many more in the weeks and months to come.

It was about 25 years ago when the headlines about Free Speech's death in England began making their rounds. A gifted cartoonist, Robert Edwards, had done the unthinkable: He dared to laugh at Jews. You can laugh about lots of things in the world; but, as he learned the hard way, Jews are supposed to be off-limits. For this, he went to jail--for a year at that.
The idea of making the cartoons began with a talk among some of his colleagues. They knew he was an exceptionally gifted cartoonist, and conversations soon began, focused on using his talent and keen sense of humor to make people aware of the propaganda with which they are indoctrinated. But Robert Edwards and his colleagues decided that this would be no feeble attempt on their part to awaken folks. If they wanted to be successful in their quest to educate people, while giving them a laugh at the same time, they'd have to hit hard. The cartoon newspaper that was to be created would be a mass-printing, and it was to be distributed everywhere.
Edwards got to work. With the stroke of his pen, he drew dozens of the most controversial comics ever to grace the streets of England. The press-run was 150,000--what you might expect from a regular-sized newspaper--and they were handed out across England. "They even appeared in boxes outside a school in Dundee in Scotland," noted Robert Edwards. The name "Stormer" was given to the cartoon pages, as if a gathering storm was appearing on the horizon.

BIRMINGHAM -- A Democratic candidate for attorney general denies the
Holocaust occurred and said Friday he will speak this weekend to a
"pro-white" organization that is widely viewed as being racist.
Larry Darby concedes his views are radical, but he said they should
help him win wide support among Alabama voters as he tries to "reawaken
white racial awareness" with his campaign against Mobile County
District Attorney John Tyson.
The state Democratic chairman, Joe Turnham, said the party became aware
of some of Darby's views only days ago and was considering what to do
about his candidacy.
"Any type of hatred toward groups of people, especially for political
gain, is completely unacceptable in the Alabama Democratic Party," said
Turnham.
Speaking in an interview with The Associated Press, Darby said he
believes no more than 140,000 Jewish people died in Europe during World
War II, and most of them succumbed to ty phus.
Historians say about 6 million Jews were slaughtered by the Nazis, but
Darby said the figure is a false claim of the "Holocaust industry."
"I am what the propagandists call a Holocaust denier, but I do not deny
mass deaths that included some Jews," Darby said. "There was no
systematic extermination of Jews. There's no evidence of that at all."
Darby said he will speak today near Newark, N.J., at a meeting of
National Vanguard, which bills itself as an advocate for the white
race. Some of his campaign materials are posted on the group's Internet
site.
"It's time to stop pushing down the white man. We've been discriminated
against too long," Darby said in the interview.
A poll published last month indicated the Democratic race for attorney
general was up for grabs. The survey showed 21 percent favored Tyson to
12 percent for Darby, but 68 percent of respondents were undecided.
Darby, founder of the Atheist Law Center and a longtime supporter of
separation of church and state, said he has no money for campaign
advertising and has made only a few campaign speeches.
Tyson said aside from his views on race and the Holocaust, Darby also
has publicly advocated legalizing drugs and shooting all illegal
immigrants.
"I am astonished as anyone has ever been that anyone is running for
public office in Alabama on that platform," said Tyson. "I do not take
him as a serious candidate."
Turnham said the party began an investigation last week after hearing
about some of Darby's comments in a television interview. While the
party supports the free-speech rights of any candidate, Turnham said
some of Darby's views appear to be in "a realm of thought that is
unacceptable."
"We have Holocaust survivors and families of Holocaust survivors here
in Alabama, and many of them are members of the Democratic Party," said
Turnham.
The winner of the Democratic primary June 6 will face either Republican
Attorney General Troy King or Mark Montiel, who is opposing King in the
GOP primary.

There doesn t seem to be a news agency on the planet that hasn t something to say about tonight s immigration speech by President Bush. Just GOOGLE immigration and click on news. What you will get is news stories from around the world from Ireland to Israel and back again, including news agencies from every state in the union.
At stake, in case you ve been in a coma, is whether or not Mr. Bush will deploy the states National Guard units along the U.S. Mexico border. According to today s Washington Post, the president plans to send several thousand national guardsmen and women to play a supporting role by providing intelligence, training, transportation, construction and other functions to the border. The U.S. currently has 200 troops deployed at the border put there by President Clinton under operation gatekeeper.
While President Clinton and Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Allan Greenspan both presided over one of the world s longest sustained economic growth cycles, the U.S. border Patrol was busy collecting bodies in what has now become known as The Hot Seasons of Death. According to Enrique Marones of the Border Angels, over 4000 men, women and children have died crossing the border since 1994. Migrants, desperate for a chance to work so that they can feed their families, sometimes must brave 127 degree temperatures while crossing the border. All the while, epitaphs like illegals and illegal aliens are designed to render the campesino, the poorest of the poor, as sub-humans and criminals.
Meanwhile, one can only wonder what the National Guard will be constructing. Could it be possible that the xenophobes will finally get their wall of hate built? In 1954 Sen. Pat McCarran said that wetbacks and communists were crossing the Rio Grande. Today, the successful fusing of immigration reform and national security just might lead to what racists have been asking for since the cold war, a 2000 mile long wall of hate.
While the President tries to appease the hardliners and the hardliners pander to their ignorant racist constituents, one man s name goes unmentioned, John Tanton, co-founder of the Federation of American Immigration Reform (F.A.I.R.), U.S. English and an array of anti-immigrant organizations. According to Tolerance.org, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center: "The organized anti-immigration 'movement' is almost entirely the handiwork of one man, Michigan activist John. H. Tanton."
So the winner is clear, but so is the loser. And that loser is the Nation of Mexico and its people. The U.S. has nothing but contempt for Mexico and for the Mexican. The U.S. has never respected the Mexicano and it never will. The U.S. has become used to having its way with Mexico and imposing its will on the Mexican people. Mexico should build its own wall. Mexico should dump N.A.F.T.A. and align itself with countries that respect the Mexican. And Mexico should start by demanding payment for its oil in Petroeuros.

Where would the news cycle be without HBO? With the advent of Big Love, the premium cable channel's new series about a polygamous husband living with his three wives and seven children in Mormon Utah, the media is buzzing with stories about the fate of marriage, the history of and the prospects for polygamy, the true nature of Mormon spirituality, and so forth. When the series' villain, Roman Grant--a sinister church elder desiccated by lucre and lust--argued in one episode that legalizing gay marriage also justified the official sanction of polygamy, you could almost feel the undertow of gratitude beneath the ensuing wave of contentious chatter. I mean, didn't Scalia warn precisely about that? Culture events such as Big Love are to the media what the doings of a mysterious new family are to gossip in a small town.
In fact, constructing its shows along the lines of small-town gossip might be the secret of HBO's success. Gossip huddles most intensely in response to the strange, and the overlords of HBO are supremely gifted strangeness-mongers. For all the "cutting-edge" sophistication of shows such as Big Love, The Sopranos, Oz, or Six Feet Under, all explorations of the margins and the peripheries of American society, they have (or had) the same effect that gossip has. Their weirdness both normalizes your own most unsettling impulses and gets your vicarious wheels turning. But the latter effect is much stronger than the former.
Television drama as strangeness-enabler is something relatively new. Before cable made it possible to immerse yourself in a hallucinatory experience between dinner and bedtime, a different climate prevailed on the tube. Older shows sought out the everyday and diversified it with the exceptional. They then spent their half-hours or hours restoring either the funny new situation--The Honeymooners--or the violent new situation--Dragnet--to comfortable social order. Once TV looked for the extraordinary in the ordinary. Now TV looks for the ordinary in the extraordinary. What is so fascinating about a show like The Sopranos is the simultaneity of the routine and the horrific. It is sporadically reassuring because we see life resisting chaos and evil, and it is ultimately terrifying because we see life accommodating chaos and evil.
Commercial society's deepest aspiration, after all, is a synthesis of total instinctual gratification with the preservation of the social order. Remember "subliminal" advertising? We are now way past subliminal. Now you see a man ordering twenty more tablets of Viagra from the pharmacy on one phone, while on another phone, at the same time, he is exchanging pleasantries with one of his three wives, all of whom have him racing back and forth between their different beds in separate houses like a bull in June. Now unconscious desire is as plainly visible on television as that iPod in your hand.
The Viagra near-farce was a scene from a recent episode of Big Love, a series that is one giant step closer to the fusion of conscious and unconscious planes of existence so desperately sought by television and commerce. Though Big Love has stimulated mild controversy about the "issues" it raises--patriarchy, misogyny, the status of the nuclear family--it is really, like The Sopranos, a sort of allegory. But it is not quite an allegory, because the cardinal quality of HBO's "dramatic series," as the cable channel likes to call them, is the spectacle of entertainment inviting art into its precincts only to wrestle the latter into submission once it arrives. Indeed, HBO has pioneered an unnerving and quite addictive style that might be called allegorical realism. Its extreme situations always verge on symbolic resonance, but they are too closely tied to familiar dialogue and context to acquire much abstract meaning. Diversion must have the last word.
Still, to stick these shows with pedestrian interrogations about subjects of social debate misses all the symbolic resonances. Just because people like James Frey have discredited the imagination doesn't mean that every product of the imagination has to measure up to the facts. The media might treat the latest cable drama as just another news story, but critics do not have to follow suit. And though (as we have been constantly told since Big Love's debut) some thirty thousand to fifty thousand Americans live in polygamous relationships, the practice of taking multiple wives is hardly a social crisis too sensitive to lend itself to art. The question that Bill's wives keep asking themselves is: are we here by choice or are we trapped? That is to say, how much are you willing to pay for financial security, for emotional safety, for romantic or sexual attachment? That is a pretty fundamental question. Usually it gets asked when couplehood reaches a dramatic breaking point. The really absorbing quality of Big Love is that it can ask fundamental questions without constructing breaking points. The calm, ordinary course of a polygamous day is inherently combustible. You don't need any splitting to see the seams.
Some critics mocked Big Love's creators, Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer, when they described the show as an "ideal template to look at marriage and family." The pair should not have said "ideal," but otherwise their formulation makes perfect sense. Ideal is precisely not what you would call the situation of Bill Henrickson (played by Bill Paxton) and his three wives: Barbara Dutton Henrickson (Jeanne Tripplehorn), his first wife; Nicolette Grant (Chloë Sevigny), his second; and Margene Heffman (Ginnifer Goodwin), the youngest and latest addition to the Henrickson ménage. On the contrary, a man with three wives magnifies into clear visibility the power dynamics--the jealousy, the subtle confusions inflicted on children, the protean relationship between sex and money--that lie invisible below the surface in most families. If the show is sometimes appalling in its spectacle of male domination and female subservience, then that is the homage it pays to truth.
How much lies concealed in Bill's remark to one of his wives: "Stewardship, not consumption, is the proper relationship to material wealth"! Not only is this the straight and narrow path held out as a challenge to believing Christians, Jews, and Muslims, it is also the test that commercial society imposes on its members. And it applies not just to material wealth, but also to the fact of marriage, in the form of another person whom you are legally bound to care for, not just legally allowed to exploit. The wonder of Big Love is that it has created a situation in which the current battle between religious and secular impulses is enacted in full view, as part of the daily grind. You smile when the non-polygamous Mormon co-worker and friend of Bill and Barbara's daughter Sarah says that she plans to go do missionary work in the Middle East. With its evocation of harems and its universalizing of the polygamous instinct, Big Love's orientalizing may do its bit to puncture the "clash of civilizations."
But the show has a more pressing relevance to our situation. On the one hand, Bill's polygamy, which he has to keep hidden, is a religiously sanctioned institution, as opposed to Roman's polygamy, which is coercive and child-corrupting. On the other hand, it is a religiously proscribed practice--the Mormon church banned it in 1890--that is also an eternal fantasy for most males between the ages of fifteen and eighty-five, from surfers to sculptors to surgeons. In other words, Big Love's polygamy is a sacralized antinomianism, an institutionalized promiscuity, which may be another name for the American dream. No one wants to be curbed, but everyone wants to be right.
Yet Big Love has a big flaw. It wants too much to entertain. Time and again, you yearn for the ironic complexity of art when you see Roman with his child bride, a barely teenaged girl whose personality is being destroyed before your very eyes; or witness Sarah's struggle to make a life for herself away from the mind-boggling bewilderments at home; or begin to sense the atmosphere of violence that seems to gather whenever sexual pleasure goes too far. But having raised sophisticated thoughts and emotions, Big Love generally falls back on easy meanings and abbreviated scenes.
There is some compensation in the stellar acting: Bill Paxton's almost uncanny portrayal of a kind of naïve yet determined lustfulness, and Jeanne Tripplehorn's pitch-perfect blend of resignation, hope, bitter regret, and quietly strong resolve. The tiresome Chloë Sevigny, a drowsy and affectless cipher, is for once just right: an empty actress playing an empty character who fills her vacant psyche with manipulations and machinations. The triumph of all the principal actors on the show is to portray relatively intelligent people who utterly lack self-knowledge--with the exception of Roman, wonderfully performed by Harry Dean Stanton, who is so chilling because, like Iago, he seems to know his own evil nature.
The most incomprehensible reaction to Big Love has been the complaint precisely about these shades and nuances that the actors bring into relief: the complaint that the show makes polygamy look boring. Making polygamy look like fun would hardly calm the slightly more legitimate concern about using a despicable social practice for the purpose of entertainment. (Anyway, polygamy cannot possibly be fun.) In fact, showing the dark side of gratification even as it allows viewers to gratify themselves vicariously is Big Love's essential success. And this is the brilliant mechanism at the heart of HBO's best shows. The Sopranos (now in the middle of its sixth season) is the grotesque spectacle of what happens when people immediately satisfy their basest instincts. Sex and the City exposed the loneliness and the instability that ensue when girls just want to have fun, for years on end. Six Feet Under and Oz were, in their very different ways, tales of self-indulgence and harsh--or brutal--consequences.
Even more than these other shows, Big Love is both the indictment of a commercialist ethos of gratification and the expression of it. As television grows less and less constrained in its imagination of the antinomian and the weird, you wonder where the emphasis will finally fall, on a new type of popular art or a new type of pandering to the appetites.
