Subject: OSF's response to Tancredo
Dear Ms Gennet:
I am advised by counsel to reply to your letter to me of October 18, 2005, written on behalf of Congressman Tom Tancredo, by reminding you that the Congressman is a public figure, and that the privacy of a public figure cannot be invaded, in any actionable manner, by reproducing comments he makes at a public press conference.
As to common law and statutory "rights of publicity," those causes of action apply to the appropriation of an image of another without permission for purposes of advertising a product or service. We find a number of cases which hold that the inclusion of images or clips of celebrities or public figures in documentary movies as part of the substantive content of the movie are not within the scope of these statutes, and that application of these statutes to such substantive uses would interfere with important first amendment rights.
Given that the film opens with the prominently displayed statement that "the opinions expressed in this documentary film are solely those of each individual..." it is difficult to understand how any reasonable person could conclude, as you claim in your letter, that "[y]our use of the video clips of Congressman Tancredo appears intended to suggest that the Congressman endorses the contents or message of your film."
A more reasonable inference to be drawn from my inclusion of clips of the Congressman is that I approve of the Congressman's views - which, of course, is the fact. Indeed, I admire Congressman Tancredo's courage for his positions on illegal immigration and as a courtesy to him, I included his remarks at length and un-edited so as to prevent any confusion on the part of fair minded people about what he thinks.
I am well aware that those who wish him harm will falsely accuse him of grasping the politically forbidden "third rail" of group competition and conflict - a "third rail" which two or three other individuals appearing in the movie enthusiastically grasped with both hands.
But I am comforted by the receipt of your letter which indicates that the Congressman is taking steps to preempt any such political attacks.
Very truly yours,
Byron Jost

Mr. Linder,
I just want to tell you what your work has meant to me over the very recent
past. I picked up a VNN Podcast a few weeks back during the "Adam Curry"
trauma--first one, then another, then everything that had been posted to the
website. At the risk of gushing like a 14 y/o girl meeting "N'Sync," you
should know that your words have had an immensely profound effect on nearly
every facet of my life.
I am a non-traditional student (late twenties) studying Political Science
and Arabic at the [X], going on to the "Strategic Studies"
Masters program at [Y] next year. Upon entering the adult world,
I began to have an almost innate sense that something was wrong with the way
we lived our lives, but I was at the same time unable to directly address
exactly what it was.
To be brief, I read a text you had cited at one point during one of the
shows--Dr. MacDonald's scholarly, "The Culture of Critique." It took weeks
of sourcing primary documents before the horrible truth of jewish
supremicism (and its implications) was more fully understood. You would
think this depressing news would deflate any sense of self left after years
of watching "stupid white guys" on television being simultaneously saved
from themselves and derided by minorities and women, no? However, the
opposite could not be more true. I now own a sense of purpose that has
bettered nearly every aspect of my life. Something just "feels right" about
having true purpose. Men, Mr. Linder, need purpose and will seek it out.
We will even fight for the wrong one before we do without, but there is no
doubt in my mind that once a man finds true purpose, he finds himself--there
is no substitute for the truth. That, Mr. Linder, is to no small extent
directly attributable to your work, and for that I can only give you thanks.
Sincerely,
Theseus
p.s. I am taking inventory of my skills, I have decided to not just "sit on
my couch, getting fat." I have written bare-bones versions of about 4
essays which I think may have some Podcast-worthy content. The first is
"Wiggers, how we failed them." I will get back to you when I have something
to show.
Ed. Note: Excellent. We're glad to have you aboard. Free men speaking freely, organizing to advance their interests. ITZ COMING. Thanks to all VNN/TAA/Goyfire supporters - your tax dollars at work, ha.

GOOD BOOK A BESTSELLER
Mein Kampf copy nets $66,000
Combined News Services Friday, 28 October 2005
Interest in NS memorabilia has not diminished since the 1940s.
LONDON—An anonymous buyer has paid $66,000 for
a rare signed first edition of Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf. So announced the auction house Bloomsbury, which had anticipated no more than $45,000 from the sale.
The book was sold on behalf
of a collector and comes as part of a lot of signed postcards and other stationery from high-ranking National Socialists.
The work—which translates as "My Struggle" and which outlines the principles of racial idealism—became the bible of National Socialism in the Third Reich. The book is thought to have been among the German Leader's private papers found in one of his offices after the end of World War II.
Two volumes
Originally called "Four Years of Struggle against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice," the book was written when Hitler was in Landsberg prison after the failed Munich Revolt of 1923.
Dictated to Rudolf Hess—also imprisoned for his role in the uprising, who later became Hitler's deputy—it was published as the first volume of Mein Kampf in 1924, following the Führer's release.
The book auctioned was this volume. About 500 copies were originally printed.
A second volume was written shortly after Hitler's release from prison and was added to the work. By 1939 it had sold 5,200,000 copies and had been translated into 11 languages.
School textbook
After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Mein Kampf became a standard school textbook and all German newlyweds were given a complimentary copy.
Today the work still cannot be sold in some countries—notably the "free and democratic" Federal Republic of Germany!

Homosexual Statistics
Facts and Statistics About Homosexuals
Some statistics about the Homosexual lifestyle:
One study reports 70% of homosexuals admitting to having sex only one time with over 50% of their partners (3).
One study reports that the average homosexual has between 20 and 106 partners per year (6). The average heterosexual has 8 partners in a lifetime.
Many homosexual sexual encounters occur while drunk, high on drugs, or in an orgy setting (7).
Many homosexuals don't pay heed to warnings of their lifestyles: "Knowledge of health guidelines was quite high, but this knowledge had no relation to sexual behavior" (16).
Homosexuals got homosexuality removed from the list of mental illnesses in the early 70s by storming the annual American Psychiatric Association (APA) conference on successive years. "Guerrilla theater tactics and more straight-forward shouting matches characterized their presence" (2). Since homosexuality has been removed from the APA list of mental illnesses, so has pedophilia (except when the adult feels "subjective distress") (27).
Homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States (5). They make up only 1-2% of the population.
Homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles, and have historically accounted for the bulk of syphilis, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, the "gay bowel syndrome" (which attacks the intestinal tract), tuberculosis and cytomegalovirus (27).
73% of psychiatrists say homosexuals are less happy than the average person, and of those psychiatrists, 70% say that the unhappiness is NOT due to social stigmatization (13).
25-33% of homosexuals and lesbians are alcoholics (11).
Of homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands (or, as one homosexual admits in the film "The Castro", one minute stands) (3). Also, it is a favorite past-time of many homosexuals to go to "cruisy areas" and have anonymous sex.

One-Third of PA Arabs Thinking about Emigrating

A new survey reveals that 31 percent of Arabs in the PA think about living
permanently in another country, and a jailed terrorist and the Hamas leader are
the favorites to be PA president. The large number of those contemplating
emigration is reflected by concern for security, revealed in the newly released
Palestinian Center for Public Opinion poll by Dr. Nabil Kukali. Almost two-
thirds of the people (64.8 percent) are worried about their personal safety.

Subject: jewish race-mixers cause problems in Britain
The new colour of British racism
Behind the riots lies vicious hostility between the Asian and
African-Caribbean communities in Birmingham, reports crime correspondent
Mark Townsend
Sunday October 30, 2005
The Observer
Maybe his compassion was exhausted, but the reality suggests that Makaveli
had always disliked black people. Either way, within hours of arriving from
Pakistan after helping survivors of the Asian earthquake, he was brawling
with African-Caribbeans on the streets of Birmingham. It felt natural; all
his friends agreed with him that these people were the lowest form of
humanity.
'They come in our shops, but can't stop stealing something. Niggers can't
help it, they have a dirty gene. They are the lowest of the low,' hissed
Makaveli. The 26-year-old spat furiously at the pavement and nodded east
along Lozells Road, beyond the huddle of Asian-owned shops, to where the
Rastafarians sometimes gathered.
Inside Simply Veg, a group stood beside huge spears of sugarcane, papaya and
jars of Ethiopian myrrh. The mood was tense, the talk of slavery,
oppression, of a black community without hope. But their stories suddenly
sounded different. Their oppressors were no longer solely white. Now they
felt subjugated by another race; the Asians.
'We've had centuries of slavery. Now the Asians want to take over here,'
said Rob, a Jamaican, slamming the grocery counter. 'Black people need a
break, but things are getting bad.' Outside, across the bustling Lozells
Road, down into the red-bricked terracing of the local estates, lies a
reminder of what bad can actually mean. On the doorstep of 59 Carlyle Road,
lilies and carnations smother a plastic sheet weighed down with bricks.
Here, 23-year-old Isiah Young-Sam was stabbed to death during last
Saturday's race riots as he wandered home; the yellow petals are a dark
pointer to the new reality of race crime in Britain. The worst riots to
afflict Britain's second city for 20 years challenge the most fundamental
assumption of multicultural Britain - that racism is principally a white
vice. Almost 40 years after Enoch Powell talked of 'rivers of blood' just
two miles from where Young-Sam was murdered, a community has broken down.
Powell's inflammatory rhetoric warned that immigration would inspire strife,
but few predicted that the immigrants would turn on each other.
Only a few experts had observed that the scramble for the scant resources of
Britain's deprived inner cities was a catalyst for conflict between
competing communities. For the vast majority, particularly the government,
racism remained a strictly black and white issue. Even the Commission for
Racial Equality has failed to research the issue of inter-ethnic racism. For
its part, the Home Office is accused of ignoring repeated warnings of
conflict between black and Asian communities from its most senior strategist
into race relations.
Marian Fitzgerald, now a criminologist at the University of Kent, identified
the fracture lines that led to last weekend's clashes, not just in
Birmingham, but throughout the UK. The rioting around Lozells Road, which
left two dead in more than 200 separate violent incidents, followed a
single, still unsubstantiated, rumour that 18 Asian men had gang-raped a
14-year-old black girl in a beauty parlour.

Subject: more free speech in Russia than U.S.
My friend Paul Robinson attended the reburial ceremony for White Russian heroes Ivan Alexandrovich Il'in and Anton Denikin recently and writes about it in the new Spectator. In the new Russia this represents, apparently the Russian press, Putin and all, compares favorably to, say, the New York Times:
My journalist friend laughs at the suggestion that Putin has suppressed all independent political thought. He should know; he has twice been sacked from newspapers for writing pro-Putin articles. The problem, he tells me, is that Westerners listen too much to the likes of the former oligarch Boris Berezovsky. Incidentally, he adds, Berezovsky still owns a newspaper in Russia — so much for there being no anti-Putin voices. In fact, my friend suggests, there may even be more freedom of expression in Russia than in the West, because there are fewer social and legal constraints on ‘politically incorrect' and extremist points of view. If you want to be racist, sexist or anything else-ist, you'll find it easier to get a publisher in Moscow than in London or New York.
Reading Paul's article one gets the impression that Vladimir Putin's authoritarianism is a different sort than the one we generally suppose it to be. One might even think it preferable to the various other strains of authoritarianism prevalent around the world today.

Subject: The Colbert Report
THE COLBERT REPORT
By Troy Patterson
Airing Mondays through Thursdays at 11:30 pm on Comedy Central
"Open wide, baby bird, 'cause Mama's got a big, fat night crawler of truth!" Thus did Stephen Colbert pitch himself at the opening of the debut episode of his spin-off of "The Daily Show," his voice combining a taunt, a boast, and the cry of a loon. The loon thinks he's an American eagle, which is the very premise of "The Colbert Report", which is pronounced cole-BARE ra-PORE. "It's French—bitch," as the man tells the camera, giving that pause an extra fraction of a beat that somehow makes the gag go over every time.
As even my mother knows, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" is a top-notch fake news program with a comic sensibility encompassing goofball parody and wry satire, mild butthead raunch and deadpan Dada oddity. Colbert has worked a handful of personae in his "Daily Show" segments, among them the cocky doofus whom "The Colbert Report" inflates into a vapid and egomaniacal blowhard. He's a know-it-all know-nothing—a silly caricature of pop-jingoist, mock-populist pundits of the Bill O'Reilly type. "You're not the elite," Colbert told his viewers in that first episode. "You're not the country club crowd. I know for a fact that my country club would never let you in." He uses the word "balls" as often as possible and pronounces it with lust, making that S tingle while leveling a superior gaze. For instance, last Wednesday, after Fareed Zakaria defined himself as a centrist, Colbert countered, "Isn't a centrist just someone who doesn't have the balls to be a fanatic?"
Yes, I said Fareed Zakaria, the journalist and talking head. No, I'm not sure what was in it for him. The other guests last week were "Dateline NBC" host Stone Phillips, "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl, and CNBC jabber-mouth Jim Cramer. Each night, after dispensing with other absurdities, Colbert introduced his guest and, sucking up the subsequent applause as if it were of course for him, bounded triumphantly from his C-for-Colbert-shaped anchor desk to an adjacent set. He there continued his shtick; the guest played straight man.
Once in a while, there popped these weird moments when Colbert would drop the character for the length of one sincere question about, say, the CIA leak investigation. He prodded Stahl, "Compare this period of time… to when Watergate was just breaking." Huh? Why? One fears that, deep down, this dexterous wit wants to be Charlie Rose.
Whenever I start to wonder what such blips of seeming seriousness might mean in the context of Colbert's project of teasing the news media, I get bored, so I'll just float the idea that the host already knows his show is at risk of growing thin and airless fast. Even Bill O'Reilly knows that Bill O'Reilly is already a caricature, and even a fan of Colbert's preening idiot routine can start feeling claustrophobic after a whole 22 minutes of it. I'd be delighted to see you pull it together, Colbert. Have you got the balls?

THE COMING PETRO COLLAPSE
The living feed on the dead, and burn the remains.
By Grant Causwell
By the '80s no one who had any idea what they were talking about seriously thought the world was imperiled by strategic arms, as it was clear that the worst case would involve limited tactical exchanges against massed targets in Germany and, just possibly, with Brigadier Generals Ripper and Ripperkov at the helm, against military targets on the great unpopulated plains of both country's interiors—a nightmare, but nothing like an apocalypse.
None of this kept the adults from using the idea of death by radiation poisoning as a way of keeping us kids from growing up to be Republicans. (Democrats, my mother assured me, weren't madmen who wanted me to die a horrible death, unlike President Reagan.) Nor did it keep the adults from doing ridiculous things like building fallout shelters in their backyards or stockpiling Spam. Baptists aren't the only ones who feel the lure of that bright and ever-nearer day when the world will end and society, with all its inequities, will be swept away in a cleansing fire.
These days, there aren't many threats to the actual survival of mankind. Even people who are as concerned as they should be about nuclear terrorism or potential pandemics like avian flu don't think everyone in the world is going to die if a suitcase bomb goes off in the Holland Tunnel or if the HN51 virus mutates and becomes communicable. We must work with what God and history have given us.
The last month has seen some people here in New York working very hard. Last week was the Winning the Oil Endgame conference, where the technocrats met the plutocrats at NYU to imagine a fine new world where slightly less gluttonous SUVs and vague technologies take care of any problems that might arise from our 700 billion barrel a year gas habit.

11 held in fourth night of Paris riots
Monday, October 31, 2005 Posted: 0951 GMT (1751 HKT)
PARIS, France (AP) -- French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy was meeting on Monday with police and the parents of two teenagers whose deaths sparked four nights of riots in a Paris suburb.
Six police officers were injured and 11 people detained following the latest rioting Sunday night, with youths burning eight cars and setting garbage bins alight, authorities of the Seine-Saint-Denis region said.
The rioting in Clichy-Sous-Bois was triggered by the electrocution deaths Thursday night of two teenagers, 15 and 17 years old, who took refuge in a power substation to escape police.
However, Sarkozy said on television Sunday night that, according to his information, police went after another group of youths and were never chasing the two.
They had returned to the police station 20 minutes before the deaths, he added.
Big city suburbs, often the home to Muslim/African scum, have posed growing security concerns in recent years with mounting delinquency, drug trafficking and other crimes.
Sarkozy, speaking on TF1 television, reiterated his intention to strengthen police action against urban violence to ensure all citizens "the right to safety."

Americans Pay Tribute to Rosa Parks
Bush Lays Wreath by Rosa Parks' Casket As Dignitaries and Ordinary Americans Pay Tribute
President Bush and first lady Laura Bush walk past the casket of civil rights pioneer Rosa Park who lies in honor at the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol Building, Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005 in Washington. Parks is the first woman and second African-American to have this honor. She made history by refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white man an act of defiance that some say jump-started the U-S civil rights movement in the 1950's.
By KEN THOMAS Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON Oct 31, 2005 — President Bush, members of Congress and ordinary Americans paid tribute to Rosa Parks under the soaring dome of the Capitol Rotunda on Sunday, honoring the woman whose defiant act on a city bus challenged segregation in the South and inspired the civil rights movement.
Parks, a former seamstress, became the first woman to lie in honor in the Rotunda, sharing an honor bestowed upon Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and other national leaders. Bush and congressional leaders paused to lay wreaths by her casket, while members of a university choir greeted her with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., in whose Detroit congressional office Parks worked, said the ceremony and public viewing showed "the legacy of Rosa Parks is more than just a success for the civil rights movement or for African-Americans. It means it's a national honor."
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice paid tribute during a service in Montgomery, Ala., earlier Sunday. Rice said she and others who grew up in Alabama during the height of Parks' activism might not have realized her impact on their lives, "but I can honestly say that without Mrs. Parks, I probably would not be standing here today as secretary of state."
Inside the Rotunda, a slow-moving audience of elderly admirers, children and couples holding hands reverently proceeded around the casket. Outside the Capitol, as flags flew at half-staff, thousands of people awaited the chance to pay their respects, some arriving before noon. Some carried signs that read, "Thank you, Rosa Parks."
The crowd cheered loudly when the motorcade, led by Parks' hearse and a vintage D.C. Metro bus, arrived. Her casket was carried from the hearse by a military honor guard while Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick, D-Mich., stood with family members and friends outside the steps leading up to the Capitol and prayed.
Senate chaplain Barry Black, bowing his head in prayer, said Parks' courage "ignited a movement that aroused our national conscience" and served as an example of the "power of fateful, small acts, especially when backed by big media and their jewish producers."

Clinton blood scandal exposed in new film
Documentary tying Arkansas guv to spread of AIDS to screen in Hollywood next week
By Joseph Farah
WASHINGTON – A documentary seven years in the making tying Bill Clinton to an Arkansas prison blood scandal that spread AIDS to thousands around the world is set to screen in Hollywood next week – renewing controversy about the long-forgotten story.
The film, which premieres at the prestigious American Film Institute film festival next Tuesday, reportedly uncovers fresh evidence about how thousands in Europe contracted AIDS and hepatitis through tainted blood deliberately shipped even after widespread problems were discovered in Canada where some 10,000 had already been infected.
"Factor 8: The Arkansas Prison Blood Scandal," made by Kelly Duda, an Arkansas native, will reveal new details about how inmates at an Arkansas jail were paid to donate blood despite authorities knowing they had AIDS and hepatitis.
The documentary shows how senior figures in the state prison system altered prisoners' medical records to make it look like they were not carrying the deadly diseases.
"While making this documentary, I lost several things. I lost my president, my home state, my family, many friends, and my innocence," says Duda.
The film reveals how for more than two decades, the Arkansas prison system profited from selling blood plasma from inmates infected with viral hepatitis and AIDS. Thousands of unwitting victims who received transfusions of a product called "Factor 8" made from this blood died as a result.
Duda interviews victims in Canada who contracted the diseases, state prison officials, former employees, high-ranking Arkansas politicians, and inmate donors.
"In the early days of AIDS, we at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) were surprised that the hemophiliac community was infected so rapidly," said Dr. Donald Francis, former head of the AID Laboratory for the CDC. "This shocking documentary tells why."
Duda, who has worked with CNN, the Canadian Broadcasting Company and Associated Press Television in their coverage of the blood-scandal story, says he was followed, sued, burglarized, had his tires slashed while working on the documentary. He was also part of the team for Fuji-TV that produced "The Hepatitis C Epidemic: A 15-Year Government Cover-up." The program won a George Foster Peabody Award in 2003 and was watched by more than 12 million viewers in Japan.
[...]
Michael Galster, who conducted orthopedic clinics in the Arkansas prison system during the period the blood was collected, charged HMA officials knew the blood was tainted as they sold it to Canada and a half-dozen other foreign countries. He also alleged Clinton knew of the scheme and likely benefited from it financially.
"It may sound sensational, but I assure you it's true. In the process of making 'Factor 8,' I received strange phone calls, I was followed, my house was broken into, my tires slashed, and sensitive information – including my personal notes – mysteriously appeared on the Internet," recounts Duda. "I also had a gun pointed at the back of my head, there was a murder, and a key inmate informant was whisked out of state and put into isolation."

"Ushpizin": Uninvited guests in a temporary home
Generally speaking, movies have to stand or fall on their own; understanding context can be helpful, but it should never be essential. "Ushpizin" is an exception to this rule, or something close to it. It's a charming comedy with a philosophical undercurrent that provides a fascinating glimpse of Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox Jews, who live in a realm almost literally sealed off from outsiders. But the most remarkable thing about the film is that it exists at all.
Gidi Dar made "Ushpizin" with his old friend, the Israeli stage and film actor Shuli Rand, who some years ago joined a fundamentalist sect known as the Breslover Hasidim and withdrew from show business. They agreed that making a feature film inside the Hasidic world would create an opportunity for dialogue between the secular and religious communities in Israel. While for understandable reasons the world remains focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Dar insists that the mutual mistrust between left-leaning, nonreligious Jews and their Orthodox countrymen in Israel is "much worse" than between Jews and Arabs.
Dar agreed to work entirely inside the Hasidic worldview: There would be no filming on Saturdays, and the movie, in fact, is not even shown on Saturdays (ordinarily that's a big moviegoing night in Israel, like everywhere else). Male and female actors would never touch each other. If Rand was to play the husband in the film, the wife would have to be portrayed by his actual wife, Michal Bat-Sheva Rand, who had never acted before. (She turns out to be a forceful, if almost cylindrical, screen presence, and almost predictably steals the show.) Rand wrote the script and got approval from his rabbi before he let Dar begin shooting it.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick claims to support LGBTs, but budgets, politics outweigh resolve
By Jan Stevenson
Originally printed 10/27/2005 (Issue 1343 - Between The Lines News)
DETROIT - Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is in a tough reelection campaign against challenger Freman Hendrix. Although the polls show Hendrix with a strong lead going into the final week of the campaign, most experts agree that Kilpatrick could still upset the frontrunner.
Kilpatrick, 35, is one of the youngest mayors of a major city in America. He rose to political prominence as the Democratic Party leader in the Michigan State House and in 2000 he left the state legislature to run for Mayor of Detroit.
He has had a rocky relationship with the LGBT community as Mayor. He raised the ire of the community with anti-gay remarks in his first campaign, but he said he has learned a lot about the gay community through that experience and his interactions with LGBT leaders throughout his first term. But after almost four years in office, his administration has done little to advance the issues that are most important to the LGBT community.
Kilpatrick spoke to BTL's co-publisher Jan Stevenson Oct. 22 by phone about a range of issue including his campaign, his perceptions of the LGBT community, domestic partner benefits, and how his faith influences his views on LGBT issues.
Between The Lines: Are you interested in getting support from Detroit's politically active gay community for your campaign?
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick: Absolutely. I'm interested in having the support of everyone in Detroit.
BTL: Triangle Pride PAC sends out questionnaires during each election cycle and they sent one to your campaign, and it was not returned. Is there a reason why?
Kilpatrick: No. It is not because of the gay community or the Triangle Pride PAC. We just had a problem early in this election sending those back. We didn't send back the UAW's questionnaire. Early when all the questionnaires were coming in, it was the same time that we were going through the budget period. Unfortunately it took us a while to get a campaign staff together, to get people up and going. And it took us a long time before we even transitioned into a political organization. By the time we did that we were well into July.
So it's not anything personal, and if they would still want me to fill that out I would be happy to.
BTL: Are you aware that gay people have no legal protections under state or federal law against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations?
Kilpatrick: What do you mean by that?
BTL: The civil rights legislation that is on the books, such as the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Law in Michigan, does not cover sexual orientation.
Kilpatrick: Yeah, yeah. [When in the state House] I supported including sexual orientation in Elliott-Larsen and in the hate crimes legislation. In fact, I co-sponsored some of those bills when I was in Lansing.
BTL: Detroit's City Charter extends protections based on sexual orientation. The agency with enforcement power of the charter is the Human Rights Commission, but it is woefully under funded. There are no investigators, or investigations or real staff to deal with any complaints that may come in. That's a problem since that is the only defense for gay folks against discrimination. Why is that?
Kilpatrick: Well, the HRC is also the primary agency for enforcement for executive orders and for ordinance violations. We are just not doing the job in any of those areas and we haven't been for a very long time because of under-funding. So it's just not the gay issue. We are doing very poorly there in moving dollars. And when this mayor - me - when I have been faced with 'where do you cut?' unfortunately a lot of it has been in the compliance and enforcement area and in human rights.
I would love to sit down - and I have said this to the construction trade community, as well as the African-American contracting community, and now to you and to the gay community - to sit down and come up with some other way, or some help in enforcement. We just don't have the army to do it now. And it would be disingenuous for either me or my opponent to say that we can fund it - we just don't have the dollars right now to put into that pot to do it. Because every dollar that goes there is from the general fund is away from a cop or police officer, is away from recreation, it's away from DTW. What we are doing now, just so you know, is we are trying to look legally if we could have citizens be enforcement people - actually deputize citizens. But that is in the early stages, because we do need some citizen volunteers, some citizen activists, because I don't see in the short term how we can beef up that part of our operations. It matters and it is frustrating.
BTL: Gov. Granholm launched her "Cool Cities" initiative, and you have been involved in all of that for Detroit. The whole thing is based on the work of urban planner Richard Florida and his book, "The Rise of the Creative Class." In part, Florida argues that those cities that welcome their gay communities send a strong signal to creative people that they are welcome.
In Detroit, many gay people just don't feel that love. There is no liaison in the mayor's office to the gay community, and Detroit remains one of the few large cities in America that doesn't offer domestic partner benefits to the same-sex partnered employees.
You currently have the legal authority to enact DP benefits without a charter provision - the City Council gave the mayor that power in the Archer Administration. Why haven't you done that, and will you do it if elected to a second term?
Kilpatrick: The only reason I haven't extended partnership benefits is that we need to radically reorganize the entire benefits structure - period. And to add the benefits now would almost be financially irresponsible at this point. Because our benefits have gone up $120 million in three years since I've been here, to add more people at this time would be financially irresponsible.
I hate being management sometimes because it makes me look like an ogre, but I was one of the co-sponsors in Lansing of legislation to extend domestic partner benefits for the state. I believe in it. I think it is something that absolutely needs to happen, but sitting in this chair everyone says, 'Well, just make it happen.' Well, that means our benefits may go up another $10 to $15 million which means I would have to cut more than $15 million from the budget. So once we reorganize our benefits and we are done renegotiating with our unions I want that to be part of the benefit package. I really do. I want every benefit that is allowed by any city employee to be extended to the partnership benefits, and people who are registered in the city need to have those benefits.
When I was reading Richard Florida's book, and I had a long, in depth conversation with him, it opened me up and exposed me, and then traveling. You know, one of the problems with most people in Detroit, I don't care what kind of income bracket they come from, they are only really exposed to Detroit, and it is only ever a 'black-and-white' conversation. I didn't go to school with one white person until I went to high school. You learn more as you go along, and now I know that it is critically important for us to expand our world, our minds, our industry base, our cultural base, our arts base. We need to open ourselves to different people to be able to grow and flourish right here in Detroit.
BTL: Many LGBT police and firefighters do not feel safe coming out at work - they fear for their personal safety and their jobs.
Kilpatrick: Really?
BTL: Yeah. Using Boston and NYC as examples, both cities have active employee groups in their police and fire departments that are strongly supported by the mayor's office. Would you support a gay employee group in the Detroit police and fire departments?
Kilpatrick: Yes, if there is a gay or lesbian group I would definitely support it. I don't see any problem with that at all.
BTL: Diversity training for the police and other city service departments to sensitize them more to gay issues has stopped. Why is that and would you provide the leadership necessary to get them going again?
Kilpatrick: Diversity training and training period in the police department fell apart between 1995 and 2002. Terrible. We need it now more than we've ever needed it before. We went out and got Dr. L.C. Scott who is a world-renowned leader in training. She was here for a couple of years and then got a big-time job offer in Washington, D.C. so now she's gone. We gotta pick that back up because I believe it's one of the critical problems in community relations with the police officers.
That organization spends most of their time problem solving. And it is hard to solve problems when you don't know the community, when you are not comfortable with the community, when you have no training in dealing with people, when you're not exposed to diversity. We are taking an organization that grew up on being tough, being aggressive and policing has changed so much in America, but the department hasn't changed. Most of their job - 99 percent of it - is really problem solving. It's not taking a guy out or taking him down. So that's something we have to teach and learn.
We are doing a national search now to get someone to replace Dr. Scott. That was a major loss when she went to Washington. We need someone else to come in to fill that void.
BTL: Will you support the hiring of openly gay police and firefighters?
Kilpatrick: Sure. I don't see anything wrong with that.
BTL: Currently the City of Detroit offers Neighborhood Opportunity Funds to organizations that qualify. One requirement to receive NOF money is compliance with all city laws. Do you agree that organizations that receive taxpayer money such as NOF funds should comply with the City Charter and the Omnibus Civil Rights Ordinance?
Kilpatrick: Sure - yes.
BTL: What about the Boy Scouts? Should they be allowed to use city space for free?
Kilpatrick: Are they still discriminating against gay leaders?
BTL: Yep, their policy is that they will not allow gay men to be scouts or leaders.
Kilpatrick: I've always been a supporter of the Boy Scouts, and it is a shame that that is still the policy of the Boy Scouts. In 2002 I got in a lot of trouble with the gay community for supporting the Boy Scouts' stance. I am a former Boy Scout leader, and I started a program at Marcus Garvey Academy, and I never knew that was a policy. It is a private organization and they have a right to think what they want, but it is a problem when they start taking public money. So yes, I do have a problem with that. I didn't know that was still one of the big issues. I thought that was gone because so many Boy Scout leaders were gay. [laughter] I thought they had gotten over that one. Seems a little hypocritical.
BTL: As Mayor, would you be willing to preside at same-sex commitment ceremonies?
Kilpatrick: No. I don't do that. I have performed one ceremony - period - when I got into office because I promised my uncle I would do it. I'm not comfortable presiding over any ceremony - marriage or commitment. I just think that is a role for the church. I just feel very deeply that when two people are bond together that should be done in holy matrimony. I ain't the guy to be doing that.
BTL: You did not support Proposal 2 last year. Do you support the repeal of the state's constitutional amendment approved in Proposal 2?
Kilpatrick: I could not go out and support the repeal of it. I would not be on the other side either. My issue is because of where I am with my faith, so I wouldn't be out there actively in support of repeal of it.
BTL: In your first run for mayor you made a comment that angered many people in the gay community. You said you would not want your sons to be near any gay men. Despite repeated requests for an apology, you have never actually apologized to the gay community for that remark. Would you like to take this opportunity to do so now?
Kilpatrick: You know, I have gone into smaller settings and said that if anyone was hurt by that comment then I apologize. I would like to take this opportunity to say to your readers that if anybody was hurt by that comment that I made, then I apologize for that.
There was a specific question that was asked of me when I was 30 years old and piss and vinegar and I answered right off the top of my head, and people took that as a discriminatory hate comment. And that hurt me tremendously because of my record in the community. What I said was, and I can't remember exactly what I said, 'I wouldn't want my kids around gay people,' is ignorant actually. I don't know how you keep your kids [away from gays] because people are everywhere and they are just people.
My comments were way too much, and I think after that I had more meetings with groups of gay and lesbian people than any mayor ever has in the history of the City of Detroit. Whether it was going to Affirmations, or smaller settings in Detroit, African-American gay organizations, or going to Hotter Than July! - I've been to Hotter Than July! for three years because I want people to know who I am. I don't hate anybody. I just want people to understand that.
I want my kids to be more global in their perspective. Of course, I want to raise my sons to be strong in who they are, and I don't want them to be narrow-minded as well. But you change from 30 to 35, and there's some things because of my faith that I don't support, but I don't ever want to be looked at as someone who hates.
BTL: What have you learned about the gay community in your first term?
Kilpatrick: I have learned an awful lot about people who are right around me who are members of the community, and it has been real interesting. I have an ability to disagree, and they have the ability to disagree with me, but there is a mutual love for the heart of people and I have learned that you can do that.
So many African-American men, and that's all I know about because I've been one my whole life, you learn from being a young baby to be against being gay or liking a gay guy, or to be macho. And my whole life I have always been a person who brought people together. I've never been a bully, never been someone who talks about folks. And I think that role is playing out much better in this position, and that's what I want to continue to do.
I think our city is in a position where we are ready to accept the world, we are ready to accept the global mind, we are ready to accept a new economy, we are ready to host a Super Bowl. I have learned that the gay community is a very, very important part of that.

Canadian Government Caught Funding Anti-Christian Bigotry - Minister Won't Apologize
OTTAWA, October 27, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Conservative MP has discovered through documents obtained under Access to Information that Status of Women Canada has been funding anti-Christian bigotry and pro-abortion activism. However, in a startling exchange of correspondence, the Minister responsible for the funding neither offered to pull the funding nor to apologize to Christian Canadians for funding groups which defame them.
Writing to Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla last month, Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott pointed out that the documents obtained through access to information requests revealed the government granted $27,400 last year to the BC Pro-Choice Action network (pro-CAN).
In his letter to the Minister, MP Vellacott notes:
Pro-CAN spokesperson Joyce Arthur uses derogatory labels to describe individuals who are pro-life, saying their opposition to abortion, "comes primarily from religious justifications for oppressing women" and a need to "maximize (the Catholic Church's) membership levels to maintain their worldly influence and wealth." Pro-CAN accuses pro-life Christians of being "religious fanatics" who do "little or nothing for children once they are born." She says pro-life Christians are "anti-woman and anti-child," have views which are "uninformed, sexist, cruel," and lack the ability to empathize which "breeds intolerance, hate crimes, and war." Ms. Arthur says that the pro-lifer's attitude towards women is like "the slaveholder's attitude to blacks, and the Nazi's attitude to Jews."
Vellacott suggested that the Minister withdraw funding from the group and apologize to Christian Canadians for funding such bigotry. "The government should be taking no part in spreading this sort of bigotry. Please ensure that any current funding to Pro-CAN ceases immediately and that no future taxpayer money be given to this group. And please have your department issue a public apology to all Christians and pro-life Canadians because of your department's financial support of this hate mongering organization," said Vellacott.
In a curt reply dated October 18, Minister Frulla says, "I appreciate being made aware of your concerns." The Minister acknowledges that pro-CAN and the other pro-abortion activist groups mentioned in the letter by Vellacott, "did indeed receive funding under the women's Program of Status of Women Canada."
Frulla suggested she was well aware of the activities of pro-CAN, but found no objection to funding the anti-Christian group with public monies. "Each application is assessed according to a stringent set of objectives and criteria . . . Please be assured that the initiatives cited in your letter, which did indeed receive funding, met all of the above-mentioned objectives and eligibility criteria."
Frulla concluded her response, "Please accept my best wishes for the challenges ahead."

Subject: "hate" crimes bill: tracking the speech-haters & Internet-wreckers
'NET BUSTING HATE BILL READIED
Friday, October 28, 2005 - FreeMarketNews.com
Senator Edward Kennedy will attach his hate crimes bill, S.1145 onto the Sex Offenders Registration Act, according to the office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.
The bill passed the Senate 65 to 33 in 2002 but was stripped in conference. The Judiciary Committee defeated the bill last Thursday. FMNN has reported that the bill is part of a larger package of measures aimed not so much at those who are in some sense "racist" but at the alternative press itself which already has been targeted by the Bush State Dept.
The Hate Crimes bill, the State Dept. initiative and press Shield bill announced by Senator Richard Lugar create a formidable package of weaponary for legislators seeking to attack and weaken the alternative Internet press. This initiative is solidly backed by the mainstream media which has not sought to cover it with any level of analytical certainty but has instead reported on the package as a series of discreet and unlinked items.

Subject: Detroit's race problems
Students say they can help solve racial issues
October 29, 2005
BY LORI HIGGINS
FREE PRESS EDUCATION WRITER
Put 11 students from diverse backgrounds together to talk about race relations and you discover quickly that not only can they recognize the problem with self-segregated cafeterias and the prejudices of adults, they know the solution.
It's them.
Efforts to bridge the racial divide in metro Detroit, prompted by a string of recent hate crimes, are bringing impassioned groups of adults together to seek solutions.
But the best ideas may come from the hallways of area schools. At Thurston High School in Redford Township, for example, students are engaged in a year-long conversation aimed at improving race relations.
"It starts here, with us," said Jeff Madigan, a 17-year-old senior, who is white.
He was one of the students in a Race Is the Place discussion Thursday. The school was one of three chosen by Outreach Extensions, a California-based media consulting firm, to receive $5,000 from the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
"We saw them as creating a wonderful prototype that could then be replicated by other schools throughout the country," said Judy Ravitz, president of Outreach Extensions.
Ed. Note: Jews create racial problems by ending freedom of association. Then they step in as consultants to solve those problems, collecting $5,000 checks in the process.
Organizations that bring people together
Some of these metro Detroit groups also have programs specifically for young people.
•United We Walk: An annual event in January sponsored in part by the West Bloomfield School District, celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. The day includes sessions where teens talk about topics such as affirmative action, interracial dating and prejudices. For information call 248-865-6450.
•Generation of Promise: Based in Detroit, this program works with 16 area high schools to identify juniors who will spend a year participating in events designed to increase cross-cultural communication. For information, call 313-494-4565 or visit www.generationofpromise.org.
•Leadership in the New Century: A National Conference for Community and Justice program, it works with up to 40 high schools in metro Detroit. Students can get involved in several programs, including a crosstown retreat, where they have conversations with other students about diversity issues in their schools. For information call 313-567-6225 or visit www.nccj-mi.org.
•Race Relations & Diversity Task Force: This Birmingham/Bloomfield area group sponsored by the Community House of Birmingham meets every third Monday at 8 a.m. at the Community House, 380 S. Bates, Birmingham. Call 248-644-5832 for information or visit www.racerelationsdiversity.org.
•Equality Zone: After cross-burnings in July, Trenton residents established this group to hold events and meetings. Call St. Philip Lutheran Church at 734-676-7141.
•Metropolitan Organizing Strategy Enabling Strength: The Detroit group holds open meetings to talk about racism and diversity. For information, call 313-962-5290 or visit www.mosesmi.org.
•New Detroit Inc: The organization bring various groups and people together to work toward improving race relations. Call 313-664-2000 for more information.

'Lynching' Ad Roils Detroit Race
Violent Images Used to Criticize Media Coverage of Mayor
By David Runk
Associated Press
Sunday, October 30, 2005; Page A09
DETROIT -- A full-page newspaper advertisement depicting black corpses hanging from trees and likening media coverage of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to lynching has drawn criticism in the home stretch of his reelection campaign.
The mayor distanced himself from the ad, which was published last week in the city's largest black newspaper and echoes complaints he has made about media coverage.
"This advertisement is not affiliated in any way with the Kilpatrick administration or the Kilpatrick for Mayor campaign," Kilpatrick said in a statement. "Detroiters are very passionate people, and while I appreciate the spirit of some of the content, I do not condone the images in this advertisement."
The ad states it was paid for by Citizens for Honest Government, an independent political action committee. A message seeking comment from the committee was not returned Friday.
Mayoral challenger Freman Hendrix, deputy mayor under Kilpatrick's predecessor, criticized the ad.
"I think Detroiters are good-willed," he said. "African Americans in particular will look at this ad and reject it."
The ad, which appeared Wednesday in the Michigan Chronicle under the headline "Lynching is Still Legal in America," claims the media has targeted Kilpatrick and failed to examine Hendrix's tenure as deputy mayor. It also describes recent examples of racism in the Detroit area, including hate crimes in the mostly white suburbs.
Detroit is about 80 percent black, and both candidates for mayor are black. But race and the issue of how much the city should cooperate with the surrounding suburbs have come up repeatedly in the campaign.
Sam Logan, the newspaper's publisher, said he was not aware of the ad until after it appeared in print, and that the paper "does not condone" the images.
The co-publisher of the Michigan Citizen, another community newspaper that ran a similar ad, defended it, saying it highlighted issues that need to be examined.
"I have not got one call from a subscriber or a reader who complained about that ad," Catherine Kelly said. "Not one letter or e-mail."
Kilpatrick has implied that the media is out to get him with scrutiny over his use of a city credit card on out-of-town travel and a city lease of a luxury sport-utility vehicle for his family. In May, his father apologized after comparing the media's treatment of his son to Nazi propaganda.
Hendrix, 55, has been leading Kilpatrick, 35, in polls ahead of the Nov. 8 general election.

Subject: Tennessee today...
Coalition tries to combat negative views of immigrants
2005-10-30
by Rick Laney
Daily Times Correspondent
Immigration and refugee rights are controversial topics in post-9/11 America.
The terrorist attacks make some question who should be allowed into the country and on what conditions. Others, including members of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), believe immigration issues are being twisted into political platforms having nothing to do with national security.
About 50 members of TIRRC attended a regional meeting at Pellissippi State Technical Community College's Blount Campus Saturday afternoon to train local immigrants and discuss immigration issues.
``Immigration is now a platform for politicians,'' said Juan Canedo, organizing director for Nashville-based TIRRC. ``The anti-immigration movement has worked its way into the federal, state and local governments.
``They're criminalizing all immigrants by focusing so much attention on the small criminal segment of the immigrant population.''
Census data compiled by the Migration Policy Institute ranks Tennessee sixth in the nation for the fastest growing immigrant population.
Between 1990 and 2000, Tennessee's foreign-born population increased 169 percent. The Hispanic population in Tennessee grew by 278 percent (from 32,741 in 1990 to 123,838 in 2000), the fourth-highest rate of Hispanic growth in the nation.
The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition formed in 2001 when immigrant leaders from various ethnic groups successfully organized to campaign for changes to Tennessee's driver's license requirements. The result was a new law, passed in May 2001, allowing immigrants without Social Security numbers to obtain a valid driver's license.
Tennessee became one of very few states issuing driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Tennessee lawmakers questioned the security implications of the law.
With resistance from TIRRC, Governor Phil Bredesen signed the Tennessee driving certificate bill into law just one year later in May 2004. This law made a Tennessee driver's license available only to U.S. citizens and ``lawful permanent residents'' of Tennessee. Applicants not meeting the requirements receive a ``certificate for driving'' that clearly states ``not valid for identification purposes.''
Bredesen's office maintains that the old law was a threat to homeland security. Many members of the legislature believe the current law is still too weak, arguing that undocumented immigrants should have no access to a driver's license or a driving certificate.
Fran Ansley, a law professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law, said, ``There are some dangerous things going on right now in our state and here in our community. People are taking advantage of other people's fears.
``Before Sept. 11, 2001, encouraging things were happening. People were starting to understand that when labor standards erode for the immigrant segment of our population, it hurts us all. People were also standing up to fight racial profiling and it was getting positive attention.
``We had momentum, but the attacks on 9/11 kicked the teeth out of it.''
Recent incidents of hate crimes in East Tennessee, including the vandalism of La Lupita, a Mexican grocery store in Maryville, were discussed in detail during the group's ``open forum.'' According to attendees, a group of ``minutemen'' in Morristown recently attempted to turn over undocumented immigrants to immigration authorities and members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) planned to put pipe bombs under buses carrying immigrant laborers.
``There are hate-mongers here who destroy the credibility of our whole community by spreading misinformation,'' said Santos Aguilar of Knoxville.
``We preach human rights and human dignity while allowing these groups to do what they do under the banner of freedom of speech. Immigrants want dialog -- not hate and racism.''
Although TIRRC representatives describe East Tennessee as a ``challenging area'' for the group, participants were surprised by the ``larger-than-expected'' attendance.
``The issues facing immigrants and refugees were not something I would have even thought about when I entered law school,'' said Emily Roberts, a Knoxville resident and University of Tennessee law student who attended the meeting. ``Now I realize that immigration is the single biggest issue -- and people try to push it under the rug.''
Ansley has worked on immigration issues for 10 years as a law professor at UT, and noted: ``Blount County should be proud of itself for starting this conversation on race and immigration. It's a relatively new issue for this part of the country, but we're starting to see people from all walks of life getting involved.''

Violent crime rate declines but more Niggers in jail
Sam Johns
WASHINGTON (BNW) – As the U.S. crime rate declined 2.2 percent last year, continuing a decade-long downward trend in serious offenses; Black incarceration has increased with more Niggers in jail than ever.
About 8.4 percent of the country's Black males between the ages of 25 and 29 were in state or federal prison, compared with 2.5 percent of Hispanic males and 1.2 percent of white males in the same age group, the report said. Blacks made up an estimated 41 percent of inmates with a sentence of more than one year, the report said.
All major categories of violent crime in the United States declined in 2004, bringing the rates of the most serious offenses, including murders, rapes, robberies and assaults, to a level 32 percent lower than those reported in 1995, the new figures show.
The rate of property crimes -- such as burglary, larceny and auto theft -- declined 2.1 percent as well last year.
The only category of violent crime in which the number of incidents rose was forcible rapes -- to 94,635 in 2004 from 93,883 in 2003, an increase of 0.8 percent. But accounting for an increase in population, the rate of forcible rapes dropped 0.2 percent.
The 523-page FBI Uniform Crime Report is the final compilation and statistical analysis of crime data reported by nearly all state and local law enforcement agencies for 2004.

Subject: Dresden apology

Necessary or not, Dresden remains a topic of anguish
By John Keegan
The rededication of the Frauenkirche in Dresden is meant to signify an English apology to the Germans for the most savage of all acts of the strategic bombing campaign of the Second World War. In February 1945, Dresden, historically the capital of the old kingdom of Saxony and a famous cultural and aesthetic centre, was devastated by a joint Anglo-American bombing raid, the British by night, the Americans by day.
Until the raid, Dresden remained almost the last of Germany's large cities not to have been laid waste. By the time the raids finished, much of historic and modern Dresden had been flattened and 35,000 people, mostly civilians, had been killed.
As a result, Dresden became a catchword for all that the opponents of the strategic bombing campaign most detested. In the controversy that ensued, the casualty figure was inflated; a number as large as 200,000 was widely cited while the name of Dresden was used to brand Air Marshall Harris, head of RAF Bomber Command, a war criminal.
As the event receded into history, attempts were made to establish an objective account and above all to explain why so late in the war an undamaged German city, often described as a civilian target, was subjected to an all-out attack. The official explanation was that Dresden was a major communications centre, close behind Germany's eastern frontier which the Red Army was about to cross in its final offensive from Poland towards Berlin.
The raid was intended to disrupt the German defence and to lend support to the Russians, who, it was alleged, had specifically requested it. In the days before the raid, when it was being planned, Churchill was at Yalta agreeing with Stalin and Roosevelt on the future of Europe.
It is said that Stalin asked for the bombing of Dresden at Yalta, though in conversation, not on paper. It is still difficult to identify who gave the critical order. Air Marshall Saundby, Harris's deputy, admits to approving it "with a heavy heart". Harris said later: "The attack on Dresden was at the time considered a military necessity by people more important than myself."
The truth seems to be that both Saundby and Harris approved, but when the controversy arose, sought to distance themselves from it. The fact is that, after an abortive American daylight attack, 800 RAF Lancasters flew across Europe to their distant target and devastated it for the loss of only six aircraft. In fortuitous weather conditions, they created a fire storm, the largest ever achieved after Hamburg in 1943, so that many of the victims were asphyxiated in the cellars where they had taken refuge.
Almost immediately, those responsible started to have second thoughts. Churchill himself penned a minute which read: "It seems to me that the moment has come when the question of bombing German cities simply for the sake of increasing the terror though under other pretexts should be reviewed. Otherwise we shall come into control of an utterly ruined land. The destruction of Dresden remains a serious query against the conduct of allied bombing. I feel the need for more precise concentration upon military objectives rather than the mere acts of terror and mass destruction, however impressive."
Under the protests of RAF leaders, the note was eventually withdrawn and another less critical substituted. Churchill had, as early as 1943, expressed his horror of area bombing. After seeing photographs of the destruction wrought, he burst out to his intimates: "Are we beasts?" Yet Churchill knew all the arguments: that before D-Day the only means that Western allies had of striking back at Germany was by bombing, that Germany was responsible for starting the bombing of cities, that it was necessary to demonstrate to the Russians, who were bearing the main effort, that Britain and America were doing something to advance victory.
In the circumstances of early 1945 there were pressing reasons for persisting in the bombing. The Germans were still hitting London with pilotless weapons, the prospect of victory, apparently so close at hand in the autumn of 1944, had sharply receded after Hitler's great December offensive in the Ardennes, the Battle of the Bulge, which had caused more American casualties than any other battle in the west. Moreover, it was strongly believed - and not only by the bomber barons - that bombing severely damaged and might soon break German morale.
By April 1, under pressure from Churchill and protests such as that of Richard Stokes, a Conservative MP who asked in the Commons if "terror bombing" was now British policy, the RAF terminated attacks on cities, though Harris insisted on keeping the decision secret lest it simplify German defensive policies.
The end of the war in Europe was in any case only five weeks distant and there was little left to bomb. All 60 of Germany's largest cities lay in ruins. The Russians were outside Berlin. Hitler was already contemplating suicide. Several of his senior commanders had already taken that step. Dresden however would not go away. The story returned to haunt Churchill's government and Bomber Command, as it still does.
Can there ever be a final verdict? None has been reached among the wartime generation, who prefer not to dwell on what Bomber Command did to Germany during the war. Even the most blinkered survivors of the war years know that the strategic bombing campaign achieved results from which they shrink, 600,000 civilian casualties, the majority women and children, many burnt to death.
In the last, remembering Dresden forces one to recognise that there is nothing nice or admirable about any war, and that victory, even a victory as desirable as that over Nazi Germany, is purchased at the cost of terrible human suffering, the suffering of the completely innocent as well as of their elders and their parents in arms. It is right to remember Dresden, but chiefly as a warning against repetition of the mass warfare that tortured Europe in the 20th century.
Here.
Ed. Note: Dresden paid the price for Hitler's weakness in refusing to destroy the British army at Dunkirk.

'Dude," as Stan from South Park would have put it. "That's pretty ****ed up right there." There they were, two pretty-as-a-picture 13-year-old twin sisters, beaming out from a news page in the Telegraph this week: white-bread, squeaky-clean all-American girls, one of them still with braces on her teeth. And - cuter still - they were wearing matching T-shirts with big smiley-face logos on them. Big smiley faces, both doctored with a diagonal dark fringe and a little toothbrush moustache.
These Hitler-loving cutie-pies, we learned, were Lamb and Lynx Gaede, aka Prussian Blue: the latest teen pop sensation to take America's toe-tapping white supremacist community by storm. I couldn't get enough of them, personally. They were like something Chris Morris might have made up. "Strike force! White survival!" they warble to adoring audiences. "Strike force! Yeah!"
Their message to America's famously embattled white minority - "turn that fear to hate" - is encoded in a series of songs, some in German, filled with gibberish about Norse mythology: "Lo, they do call to me, they bid me take my place amongst them, in the halls of Valhalla, where the Brave, they live forever!" These are, if you think about it, a somewhat peculiar set of cultural touchstones for kids from Bakersfield, California. Their contemporaries might expect, rather, to find them in the halls of 7-11, where the Cheez Whiz lives on a permanent two-for-one offer.
Being a good liberal, my first thought, once I'd stopped laughing, was: there must be some sort of law against this. Putting 13-year-old children in Hitler T-shirts and encouraging them to sing awful, just awful (you can download a sample from their website: I'd counsel against) neo-Nazi songs for an audience of pinheaded white trash... isn't this the sort of thing that social services might want to have just a teeny look at?
Good liberal, as I say: always looking to ban something. The truth is, I fear, that the possibility of Prussian Blue's existence is almost certainly a by-product of America's admirable constitutional protections on free speech. As long as they don't actually start singing "put them nigras to the sword, boys!", you just have to, in America, shrug your shoulders and wish them ravaged by a plague of boils.
The girls wouldn't stand much of a chance here, though. We've got an entire government full of good liberals, hellbent on banning all sorts of nasty forms of speech. I wouldn't wish Prussian Blue on the listeners, even, of Melody FM. But I wonder whether having the likes of the Gaede twins in public life might not, on balance, be a price worth paying after all.

Subject: Hans Erich Nossack's The End
Nossack, Hans Erich The End: Hamburg 1943. Photographs by Erich Andres. Translated by Joel Agee. Foreword by Joel Agee. 112 p., 11 halftones. 5-1/4 x 7-7/8 2004
Cloth $20.00 0-226-59556-0 Fall 2004
One didn't dare to inhale for fear of breathing it in. It was the sound of eighteen hundred airplanes approaching Hamburg from the south at an unimaginable height. We had already experienced two hundred or even more air raids, among them some very heavy ones, but this was something completely new. And yet there was an immediate recognition: this was what everyone had been waiting for, what had hung for months like a shadow over everything we did, making us weary. It was the end.
Novelist Hans Erich Nossack was forty-two when the Allied bombardments of German cities began, and he watched the destruction of Hamburg--the city where he was born and where he would later die--from across its Elbe River. He heard the whistle of the bombs and the singing of shrapnel; he watched his neighbors flee; he wondered if his home--and his manuscripts--would survive the devastation. The End is his terse, remarkable memoir of the annihilation of the city, written only three months after the bombing. A searing firsthand account of one of the most notorious events of World War II, The End is also a meditation on war and hope, history and its devastation. And it is the rare book, as W. G. Sebald noted, that describes the Allied bombing campaign from the German perspective.
In the first English-language edition of The End, Nossack's text has been crisply translated by Joel Agee and is accompanied by the photographs of Erich Andres. Poetic, evocative, and yet highly descriptive, The End will prove to be, as Sebald claimed, one of the most important German books on the firebombing of that country.
http://www.press.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/hfs.cgi/00/16499.ctl
Following the popular success of Sebald's and Friedrich's works, German publishers have printed (or reprinted) a number of accounts by contemporary witnesses, some of which have now been translated into English. One of the most striking is by Hans Erich Nossack, whose book The End describes in spare, unsentimental prose the firebombing of Hamburg in July 1943. Written a few months after the event, this "report" was published after the war in Germany and hovered at the margin of public memory there; it appeared in English translation for the first time last year in a somber, even funereal, edition, the text framed by blackened pages front and back. Nossack's account owes its existence to his good fortune in having left Hamburg three days before the bombing for a summer cabin located some ten miles south of the city. From that vantage point--close enough to see the "flying fortresses" overhead and the huge fire on the horizon but far enough away to be out of physical danger--he experienced the destruction of his home as a spectator. "I was spared the fate of playing a role in it. I don't know why," he writes. Nossack then traveled into the bombed-out city--a modern-day Dante descending into the realm of the dead--to interview thousands of survivors who were so traumatized and confused they could barely speak or register emotion: "Those who were known to have experienced unimaginably frightful hours, who had run through fire with their clothes burning, stumbling over charred corpses...why didn't they cry and lament? And why this indifferent tone of voice when they spoke of what they had left behind, this dispassionate manner of talking, as if telling about a terrible event from prehistoric times?"

The Reversal in the Politics of German Memory: Should We Be Alarmed?
By Mark M. Anderson
Mr. Anderson is a professor of German at Columbia University.
Direct Textbooks Textbook resource center
Are the former Allied nations willing to acknowledge German suffering and loss during World War II? Are they willing to question the morality of the means by which they won the war, even the firebombing that laid waste to 131 German cities and towns, and killed more than half a million people (most of them women, children and the elderly)? Or was the extremity of Nazi aggression so great, the urgency to defeat Hitler so compelling, that the Allies have effectively been shielded from the kind of moral scrutiny that has been focused on the use of atomic weapons against Japan? However one might answer those questions today, for much of the postwar period the occupying nations on both sides of the Berlin wall felt little reason to justify their actions. Germans grumbled mightily among themselves, but any public airing of their grievances was subject to severe constraints and cold war manipulation. And when the German children born during or shortly after the war came of age in the heady years of the late 1960s, they demanded that Germany view the war through the lens of non-German victims, not that of its own losses. German victimhood became politically incorrect.
But the dead return; unacknowledged suffering claims its due. That seems to be the lesson of the German war memories that have washed over the new Berlin Republic in the past few years. Diaries, memoirs, historical novels, academic studies, documentaries and even feature-length films have piled up at a formidable clip, testifying to a long pent-up need for expression. Interestingly, most of these reflections do not come from conservatives or spokesmen of the far right but from former New Leftists who reshaped the politics of German memory in the late 1960s and early '70s and adamantly opposed the attempts of Ernst Nolte and other historians in the mid-'80s to compare Hitler's crimes to Stalin's purges and other instances of mass slaughter. The same people who insisted on the "singularity" of Nazi atrocities and rejected the very notion of historical comparison (for fear of relativizing the Holocaust and diminishing German responsibility) now speak of the "unparalleled" destruction of German cities and openly question the morality of the Anglo-American Bomber Command.
This reversal in the politics of German memory has alarmed many observers, who worry that Germany's current fascination with its own victimhood signals a desire to let the specificity of Nazi crimes fade into a historical continuum of other war crimes. In fact, the recent interest in German suffering represents an extension of Holocaust memory, not its demise. What has changed is the willingness of the '68 generation to consider the full scope of wartime suffering--even that of their own parents and older relatives. Precisely because German recognition of the Holocaust is no longer in doubt, a new generation of Germans has come to understand the war in less ideological, less Manichean terms. Individual suffering, not a simple tallying of perpetrators and victims, is beginning to emerge in striking historical detail and complexity.
Which is not to say that this process of maturation has come easily or without contradictions. Consider the case of W.G. Sebald, whose 1999 book The Air War and Literature (misleadingly titled in English On the Natural History of Destruction) set off much of the current German debate. Born in 1944 in a rural mountain region untouched by the war, Sebald came to an anguished awareness of his country's past during his student years in Freiburg and, later, in England, where he first met German-Jewish refugees. As with so many of his peers, the political awakening was also personal: His father, who had made his career as an officer in the Wehrmacht, never spoke about the war, participating in what the son angrily called a "conspiracy of silence, in every German household." Sebald ultimately went into a self-imposed exile from the Federal Republic, devoting his academic work to "minority" writers at the margin of high German culture (Jews, but also Austrians and Swiss) and focusing much of his literary work on the Jewish victims of German aggression.
In On the Natural History of Destruction, however, Sebald turned to the Allies' firebombing of German cities--and to the Bosch-like scenes of carnage, pain and trauma it inflicted on a largely civilian population. Why is it, he asked, that the horrendous experiences of millions of Germans left so little trace in postwar German literature (and, by extension, in the population at large)? At once accusatory and empathetic, his response is a study in the contradictory attitudes his generation developed toward their pro-Hitler mothers and fathers. On the one hand he denounces the Germans for repressing the memory of their own suffering, while on the other he insists on the traumatized victims' "inviolable right" to remain silent. And in a paradoxical (and somewhat questionable) attempt to remedy the gap, he devotes pages of his essay to a graphic representation of the firebombing in all its horror--a descent into literalism that is notably absent from his literary evocation of Jewish suffering.
Shortly after the heated public debate over Sebald's argument subsided, a historian named Jörg Friedrich published a 600-page study titled The Fire: Germany in the Air War, 1940-1945, which vividly and emotionally described the air war from a German perspective. Like a man with a movie camera, Friedrich takes his readers into the burning cellars and rivers, into the collapsing buildings and howling firestorms--into what he calls the "Leideform," or specific "form of suffering," experienced by the German population on the ground. His subsequent edited volume of photographs gives a condensed and almost unbearably explicit version of The Fire: devastated urban landscapes as far as the eye can see; neatly stacked piles of charred, rigid bodies; an incinerated, grotesquely shrunken corpse sitting in a bucket.
Intentionally or not, these photographs uncannily reprise the now familiar images of Holocaust death, and like those images they serve as both documentation and denunciation of their subject matter, in this case the Anglo-American decision to target the highly flammable medieval city centers and their largely civilian populations, not just the railways, oil refineries or munitions factories located on the periphery. What is the morality, Friedrich asks, of the so-called "morale bombing" in late February 1945 that destroyed Pforzheim, a small medieval town of no military or strategic importance, killing more than 20,000 inhabitants (a third of its population) in a few hours? What is the morality of the "science" that English strategists perfected during the course of the war to turn urban centers into raging infernos that burned or suffocated German civilians, many of them children who had no role in supporting the Nazi regime?

Deportations helped gang grow
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Deporting members of Central American gangs from the United States is "a merry-go-round that helps the gangs spread," the Los Angeles Times reports.
Gang members often return within a few months with deportation giving them a trip home at government expense to spend time with family and friends.
"It's a merry-go-round," said Rodrigo Avila, minister of security in El Salvador.
The deportations have helped Mara Salvatrucha -- or MS-13, which began as a Los Angeles street gang with a few thousand members -- to grow into a network of 50,000 members in the United States and Central America.
The government hopes to get longer prison sentences for gang members in the United States before deportation, and has brought racketeering charges against reputed members of MS 13 in New York and Maryland.

Rioting at Link&3246ping Nazi demo
Around 100 people have been arrested after rioting broke out in Link&3246ping during a neo-Nazi demonstration, police have said. One person was charged with intention to assault.
A large group of demonstrators from Anti Fascist Action (AFA) had also gathered in the town, 200 kilometres south of Stockholm, in response to the demonstration.
Riot police have been brought in from Stockholm and regular police from the neighbouring S&3246rmland and J&3246nk&3246ping counties. It was unclear at the time of writing whether police in Link&3246ping would require further reinforcements.
At 1pm, a march which the National Socialist Front had permission to hold had not been able to start. The neo-Nazis gathered in Borggården where the march was due to start.
"We have a large group of AFA activists 30-40 metres away from them, and we're trying to keep them apart," police spokeswoman Pia Thevselius told TT.
The neo-Nazis have permission to demonstrate, but AFA does not have authorisation.
The 100 or so activists that have been arrested were anti-fascist counter-demonstrators, Thevselius told news agency TT. They were taken by bus to Link&3246ping's police headquarters.
Police in Link&3246ping warned the general public to stay away from the town centre. Several groups, including the National Socialist Front and several left-wing groups have permission to demonstrate. At lunchtime on Saturday the situation was described as very tense.
"It is a very threatening situation now, and we're trying to control it," Thevselius told TT at 12.30.
A policeman was robbed during the riots, Thevselius said. Local paper &3246stg&3246ta Correspondenten says the policeman was attacked with a knife and his police radio stolen. The paper also says activists threw bottles at the policeman.
Several streets in Link&3246ping have been sealed off.

Extremists Hold a Neo-Nazi Rally in Perm
(IsraelNN.com) About 50 members of various extremist groups based in Perm, Russia held a rally on October 14 in the center of town, giving the Nazi salute and screaming neo-Nazi slogans, according to an October 18 report in the local newspaper "Novy Kompanion."
The extremists, who belong to the Perm affiliates of various hate groups including Russian National Unity, the People's National Party, and the National Great Power Party of Russia, held the rally in order to announce the formation of a united "patriotic" organization calling itself the Avantguard of Patriotic Youth.
The new group was set up by the head of the local branch of the Liberal Democratic Party that is led by the extremist Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The rally reportedly prompted no reaction from local police despite the fact that many of its participants violated Russian laws against communal incitement.

Thousands of yellow crocus bulbs are to be planted by the youngsters of Co Fermanagh in memory of the children of the Holocaust, it has been announced.
One hundred bulbs are being distributed to each of the 49 primary schools in the county and children from forms five to seven are being encouraged to plant the bulbs which represent the Star of David which Jewish people were forced to wear under Nazi rule.
If planted in early November the bulbs will be in bloom at the end of January, coinciding with Holocaust Memorial Day which Fermanagh District Council has been selected to lead the province in commemorating next year.
The commemoration on Sunday, January 22 is being organised by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, in co-operation with representatives of the Jewish community, the council and other interested groups.
The Holocaust memorial day commemoration was initiated five years ago to ensure that the crimes committed against humanity during the Holocaust are never forgotten, particularly by younger generations.
A wide range of activities are planned in Fermanagh including an exhibition entitled 'The Kindertransport Journey ... Memory into History' which will be on display in the Museum at Enniskillen Castle during January.
Robert Sugar, the creator of the exhibition, was evacuated from Berlin as a child and will talk of his experiences being a Kindertransportee.

On October 15th, 2005 the National Socialist Movement NSM) attempted to hold a picket and march in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in the North End of Toledo, Ohio. The neo-Nazi rally was protested by hundreds of neighborhood residents who were joined by members of the Anti-Racist Action Network from across the United States and Canada.
Approximately 114 local people were arrested in a police riot that followed the cancellation of the neo-Nazi march. They are being falsely charged with various misdemeanors and felonies. Now, almost a full week later, at least a dozen people are still being held in Toledo jails. Judges have refused to reduce bail or offer bond, so these 12 adults continue to be held on $10,000 cash in lieu of bond
following an arraignment last Monday.
This is an unbelievable amount of money, and is just another way for the Toledo government to continue to oppress members of this working class North Toledo neighborhood. They know that most people cannot afford to pay this huge sum of money, and that everyone arrested is a local resident with roots in the community and thus not a flight risk. This is nothing more than the State seeking revenge for Saturday's supposed riot.
We must stand in solidarity with our anti-fascist comrades and show the State that they cannot intimidate us into not acting against fascist threats. Bail money is urgently needed, and we are asking anyone who can to please send money. Any amount will help, and will go directly to bailing people out.
Right now, the need for money is immediate, which is why we are asking people to Western Union the money. Please address all money transfers to Chris Fox in Kent, OH. Once the money is wired, please call Chris
and provide him with your name, the amount you sent and the city you sent it from so he can go and pick it up. His number is 330-389-0XXX.

Subject: NPD marches in Germany
Barricades block neo-Nazi march
Oct 30, 2005
Left-wing demonstrators successfully blocked a march by neo-Nazis in central Germany on Saturday by erecting burning barricades along the planned route.
The NPD, a party the government has likened to the Nazis and tried to ban, had won a legal battle to march through a large part of the university city of Goettingen, but their 250 supporters were forced back after a few hundred metres.
Around 500 to 600 left-wing opponents blocked the route with logs, trash containers, old bicycles and road signs and set light to their barricades. Some threw stones and bottles at the police.
The police, with a presence of almost 4,000 in the city to prevent trouble, intervened with sticks and tear gas and arrested at least a dozen left-wingers, but finally gave up and ordered the far-right marchers to return to the railway station.
Separately, 3,000 locals and members of church groups and trade unions staged peaceful demonstrations in the city centre against the planned seven kilometre neo-Nazi march.

Many injured at neo-Nazis march
30/10/2005 11:02 - (SA)
Goettingen, Germany - Sixty people, including 14 police officers, were injured and 41 people arrested on Saturday during a confrontation between neo-Nazis and anarchists in this central German town, police said.
About 350 members of the neo-Nazi National Democrat party were holding a rally and were met by a peaceful counter-demonstration of 5 000 people with a 3 800-strong police contingent separating the two groups, police said.
However a group of anarchists involved in the counter-demonstration erected barricades, set fire to rubbish bins and threw missiles and burning objects at police.
"We expected there to be some incidents but not that it would be so aggressive," said police chief Hans Wargel.
The majority of the 41 people arrested were later released while 60 people suffered minor injuries, police said.
Neo-Nazi gatherings in Germany are often outnumbered by counter-demonstrators who clash with police when they try to block the far-right marches.

Counterprotesters in Prague shout down a neo-Nazi rally
By Dinah A. Spritzer
October 30, 2005
PRAGUE, Oct. 30 (JTA) — Holidays in the Czech Republic are a time for getting away to the country with the family.
But 150 Prague residents, including many well-known Czech personalities, sacrificed last Friday, Czechoslovak Independence Day, to rally against a neo-Nazi demonstration.
Some 60 neo-Nazis gathered in front of the German Embassy to protest the incarceration in Germany of Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel, deported from Canada to his native Germany in March and charged with inciting hatred by sending materials over the Internet.
Before they assembled, a crowd, barricaded by police for their own protection, had already assembled to prevent the neo-Nazis from being heard....
Here.
No incident during neo-Nazi demonstration in support of Zuendel
PRAGUE- Some 70 neo-Nazis called for the release of Ernst Zuendel, who denies the Holocaust, from German prison in front of the German Embassy today, police spokeswoman Eva Miklikova told CTK, adding that the protest ended after a few hours without any incident.
The police separated the protesters from a 150-strong group of neo-Nazism opponents who gathered outside the embassy building as well, Miklikova said.
The police did not intervene, but they detained two persons suspected of supporting and promoting movements aiming to suppress people's right and freedoms, Miklikova said.
"Nothing but lies. Learn to read," anti-Nazi activists chanted over the heads of police guards at the ultra-right protesters listening to their leaders' speeches.
The activists' meeting, initiated by the Tolerance and Civic Society Association, was attended by several well-known personalities, including MPs Tatana Fischerova, Svatopluk Karasek, Karel Schwarzenberg (all for Freedom Union, US-DEU) and Jaromir Stetina (for Greens).
Senator Stetina told CTK that the police should intervene in his opinion, under the law banning public denial of the crimes of Nazism and communism.
Miklikova said that officials from the Prague Municipal Hall had also been present, and they could have asked the police to intervene if they had considered it necessary.
The Jewish Communities' Federation, the Czech Council for Victims of Nazism and the Association of Liberated Political Prisoners criticised the planned neo-Nazi demonstration earlier this week.
The Prague Municipal Hall, however, said it cannot ban any event unless it arouses a clear suspicion that a criminal act would happen during it.
As the hall had not banned the demonstration, the police had no means to justify their possible intervention, Miklikova said.
"The meeting was quite calm today," she added.
Zuendel, 66, who lives in Toronto, Canada, has been accused of spreading hatred towards Jews through the Internet. He repeatedly denied the Holocaust, which is a crime in Germany. Canadian police handed him to their German colleagues this spring.
Some time ago, Zuendel spent two years in a Toronto prison. He emigrated to Canada in 1958 and the Canadian authorities have repeatedly rejected his requests for citizenship.

City must find way out of Nazi minefield
Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while adjusting to those dreary pre-6 p.m. sunsets:
# How did we ever get ourselves in this position?
The National Socialist Movement — a group that most of us hadn't even heard of a month ago — seems intent on turning our lives upside down. It is planning to return to Toledo before the end of the year.
Not that the neo-Nazis sought our consent for either visit.
About 15 white supremists came here Oct. 15 to supposedly challenge two local black gangs. Toledo Police canceled the march, but the supremists' presence helped to ignite a riot that drew national media coverage. It was one of the ugliest days in Toledo history.
Not that the neo-Nazis care about wrongly painting Toledo as a racially divided city.
If rhetoric on the Web site overthrow.com is any indication, they will be more organized next time. And a "mandatory" training session — which includes "riot/protest scenario wargaming" — suggests they will be more aggressive.
Not that the neo-Nazis will help offset the law-enforcement expenses for either visit.
We are being used by an organization that promotes hate. All because we couldn't keep our emotions in check 15 days ago.
Shame on us for being outsmarted by bigots. Now, our city is playing a central role in their "divide and conquer" strategy.
Ed. Note: Nigger gangs threatening white folks in order to ethnically cleanse Toledo neighborhoods aren't "trying to divide us," only the nazis who fight back. "We" couldn't keep our emotions in check - the columnist graciously assigns blame for nigger violence to civilized white folks.

Subject: don't believe the hymie-hype
MADRID (Reuters) - An Austrian doctor accused of killing hundreds of inmates at a Nazi concentration camp during World War Two has been hiding in Spain for the last 20 years, a Spanish newspaper reported on Sunday.
German authorities have said they are hunting for Aribert Heim, 91, known as "Doctor Death".
Heim worked in Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria and killed hundreds of inmates by lethal injection and torture, according to the Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Centre, which has also said Heim may be hiding out in Spain.
Spain's El Mundo newspaper, which has previously reported that Heim may once have lived on the Costa Brava, in northeastern Spain, said on Sunday that Heim had moved to Spain in 1985.
It said he had been sheltered by Odessa, a secret group believed to have helped Nazi war criminals hide and find them new identities.
"Odessa, which has had one of its main operating bases in Spain during the 60 years of its history, has kept Doctor Aribert Heim...hidden in our country for the last 20 years," it said.
The report quoted investigators as saying that Heim's most lasting hideout was near the town of Roses, on the Costa Brava.
"The police suspect that, knowing that he had been located, Heim left the Roses area in a yacht to go to the Marbella area (on the southern Spanish coast)," it said.
Some of Heim's victims were Spaniards. Many Republicans who fled to France after their defeat in the 1936-39 Spanish civil war were sent to Mauthausen after being handed over to the Nazis by the Vichy government. Some 5,000 Spaniards died there.
According to El Mundo, Heim spent only seven weeks at Mauthausen, from October 8 to November 29, 1941, but said this was enough to leave an indelible mark.
It said he was involved in injecting prisoners with benzene, a poison used as a solvent and insecticide, to see how long they lived, and in carrying out unnecessary operations.
El Mundo said he removed the appendices of two young Dutch Jews and let them die after a long agony. "Afterwards, he personally decapitated them, boiled their heads and cleaned their skulls," it said.
It quoted a former Mauthausen prisoner, Marcelino Bilbao, 85, who said he was given benzene injections by Heim over a six-week period but survived.
"My body was paralysed, my urine was red and blood was coming from my face," Bilbao said. He said Heim never spoke but he retained a clear memory of him.
Heim was captured by the allies after the war but was only accused of belonging to the Waffen-SS and was freed from an internment camp in 1948, the report said.
When his history began to come to light, he fled in 1962.
El Mundo said he lived in Egypt until 1967, when he travelled to several other countries before setting up a clinic in Uruguay between 1979 and 1983. Two years after that, he moved to Spain, it said.
An Interior Ministry spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment on Sunday. Newspaper reports have said that police are searching for Heim in Spain but Spanish officials have made no public comment on the case.

Anti-Fascists Hack Neo-Nazi Voicemail in Toledo
Posted under Anti-Fascism by antifa on Sunday October 30 2005 @ 12:13PM GMT
Anti-Fascism In the early morning hours of Thursday, October 20th, 2005 the voicemail belonging to the Cincinnati, OH chapter of the neo-nazi National Alliance was hacked and dedicated to the anti-fascist political prisoners in Toledo, OH. As this is a toll-free number, expenses are incurred on a per-call basis. Therefore, we encourage all anti-racists to call toll-free 1-800-488-1363 and listen to the new antifa intro message on this now formerly fascist hotline.
This attack on the National Annoyance comes during a time when the Annoyance is facing a major organizational demise. With no solid leadership, financial scandal, and bizarre relationship drama, what was once America's largest neo-nazi organization is now becoming a shambling wreck of its former self. The decline of the far-right is coming at a very appropriate time, when revolutionary leftist organizations are making excellent strides in the education, organization, and mobilization of working people, as was recently seen in Toledo, Ohio in the riots which shook the city in a day of anti-fascist spirit against neo-nazis and racist, violent cops.
This most recent attack is dedicated to all our brothers and sisters presently incarcerated in the state of Ohio due to charges stemming from the Rebellion against the fascists in Toledo on Saturday, October 15th, 2005. We would like to thank all our comrades in the struggle against the far-right. In the memory of our fallen comrades, and in the spirit of victories to come, we continue our work and make sacrifices everyday to combat systemic and fringe hatred - be it racism, sexism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, classism, or xenophobia. Stay true, stay antifa! ¡Venceremos! We will win!
