Ellroy: In 1966, when I was 18, I was popped for shoplifting a bottle of wine at the Vons Market at 1st and Western in L.A. The store manager detained me in the parking lot and called the LAPD. Before they got there I took off running, and from behind me I dimly saw an LAPD cruiser in the distance. I thought I could outrun the cops. I was mistaken. Two patrol units come in, throw me down on somebody's lawn, and kick my ass with beavertail saps. I got some bruises but no lasting damage. A rather amused middle-aged sergeant picked me up, dusted me off, smiled at me and said, "Okay, kid, why did we kick your ass?" And I said, "Well, because I stole the booze." This was my first painful lesson in it, and I learned. And it's a good story 39 years later.
Dunphy: Do you think the same contract between cops and criminals is still observed?
Ellroy: No. Since Rodney King, which was an event blown grossly out of proportion by a biased media, police are afraid to conduct business as usual in Los Angeles for fear of censure within the LAPD, censure in the media, and fear of a lawsuit. If you look at the entire Rodney King incident in context and in real time, you see that Rodney King had two companions in the car, both of them black. They submitted willingly and were led out of the frame. Rodney King charged several times and was thrown down and got up again and again, took a Taser from Sergeant Stacy Koon, kept on coming and finally took the 56 blows from batons that, absent context and in slow motion, look terrible. In full-blown context it looks like nothing but a justified response to a suspect who would not submit. I think most people not schooled in the street and the realities of police work think the cops are supposed to engage dangerous suspects in something like one-on-one fights like you might see on television, and of course it doesn't work that way.
Dunphy: What was your reaction to the political response after the acquittal of the involved officers and the filing of federal charges?
Ellroy: It was double jeopardy. They were cleared fair and square. If it were not a politically charged climate at the time, if it were not an unpopular, as perceived by the media, verdict, it would not have happened.

Mexican drug commandos expand ops in 6 U.S. states
Feds say violent, elite paramilitary units establish narcotics routes north of border
WASHINGTON - The ultra-violent, U.S.-trained elite, Mexican paramilitary commandos known as the "Zetas," responsible for hundreds of murders along the border this year, have expanded their enforcement efforts on behalf of a drug cartel by setting up trafficking routes in six U.S. states.
A U.S. Justice Department memo says the U.S.-trained units have recently moved operations into Houston, San Antonio and the states of California, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. They have been operating in Dallas for at least two years, according to the feds.
The original Zetas are former Mexican army commandos, some apparently trained in the U.S. by Army special forces to combat drug gangs. Members of a broader Zetas organization have worked for the Gulf cartel since 2001. They provide firepower, security and the force needed to oversee shipments of narcotics and smuggled aliens along the border and up Interstate 35, which runs through Texas and Oklahoma.
According to FBI officials, the Zetas are attempting to consolidate their grip on the smuggling route along I-35. Anyone caught not paying the 10 percent commission they charge on all cargo - drugs or humans - is killed, according to U.S. and Mexican law enforcement sources.
The Zetas have also brought their cold-blooded killing tactics to the U.S., say federal law enforcement authorities - murdering rival drug dealers and sometimes innocent bystanders.
"Texas law enforcement officials report that the Zetas have been active in the Dallas area since 2003," said the Justice Department intelligence bulletin circulated among U.S. law enforcement officials. "Eight to ten members of the Zetas have been involved in multiple assaults and are believed to have hired criminal gangs in the area ... for contract killings."
The feds say the group has begun establishing its own trafficking routes into the United States and will protect them at any cost.
"U.S. law enforcement have reported bounties offered by Los Zetas of between $30,000 and $50,000 for the killing of Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement officers," the bulletin said. "If a Zeta kills an American law enforcement officer and can successfully make it back to Mexico, his stature within the organization will be increased dramatically."
The Zetas take their name from a radio code once used by its members. While originally there were 68, the Zetas have trained a second generation of commandos - many of them sons and nephews of those trained by U.S. military forces to combat drug trafficking in Mexico. U.S. law enforcement officials say they now number more than 700. Their numbers also include some Mexican army deserters and former federal police officers.
U.S. and Mexican law enforcement authorities say the Zetas operate special training camps in the Mexican states of Tamaulipas and Michoacán, where newly recruited Zetas take intensive six-week training courses in weapons, tactics and intelligence gathering.
The Zetas conducting a bloody war for control of the entire southern border in an effort to secure a monopoly on drug-smuggling and people-smuggling routes, according to law enforcement officials.
At least 600 have been killed this year in a wave of violence waged by the Zetas gang, headed by reputed drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, said Mexico's Attorney General Daniel Cabeza de Vaca.
Among the victims of the U.S-trained Zetas have been other suspected smugglers, hit men, police, soldiers and civilians on both sides of the 2,000-mile border.
There are widespread reports of the commandos making cross-border runs into U.S. territory in military-style vehicles, armed with automatic weapons.
The U.S. government spent millions of dollars training Los Zetas to intercept drugs, some of them coming from Mexico's southern border, before they could reach the U.S. The U.S. government has also sent U.S. Border Patrol agents to Mexico's southern border with Guatemala to train law enforcement and military forces to intercept human smugglers destined to reach the U.S.
Guzman, whose nickname means "Shorty," bribed guards to escape from prison in 2001. He is one of Mexico's most-wanted fugitives. U.S. authorities have offered a $5 million reward for his capture.
The spike in killings and kidnappings in northern Mexico in recent months has made headlines and prompted federal agents and soldiers to patrol the streets of Nuevo Laredo, across from Laredo, Texas. Recently, a new police chief in Nuevo Laredo was assassinated nine hours after taking office.
Among the 600 people murdered in gang shootings across the Mexican border this year, many were slain execution-style, with their hands tied behind their backs.
The violence along the border has reached a point where some are questioning President Vicente Fox's ability to govern the country.
A senior U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration official, Anthony Placido, told Congress last week that Mexico's corrupt police forces were "all too often part of the problem rather than part of the solution" in fighting the drug cartels.
Fox won office in 2000, ending 71 years of one-party rule and promising to clamp down on the multibillion-dollar cross-border trade in cocaine, marijuana and heroin.
While initially winning praise for putting bosses like Benjamin Arellano Felix and Osiel Cardenas behind bars, his crime-busting reputation has been undermined by the alarming rise in violence, along with evidence Fox has failed to clean up Mexico's police forces.
Faced with the fallout on its southern frontier, the State Department has twice issued travel warnings for the Mexican border, where more than 30 U.S. citizens have been kidnapped.
Mexico's apparent inability to curb the bloodshed on the 2,000-mile border is affecting the financial markets. Banking group HSBC said "staggering" levels of violence could raise questions about Mexico's stability in the run-up to next year's presidential election. Fox is constitutionally barred from running for re-election.
His approval rating has taken a hit, dropping 3 points to 56 percent in a poll in May, with many Mexicans complaining of safety fears, particularly in the north.
Fox has pledged a "mother of all battles" against the drug traffickers he says are openly challenging the government.
"We have taken on the challenge and we will do battle against all the cartels' criminals and against organized crime," Fox said in a speech Friday.
He sent hundreds of troops and federal agents to the states of Tamaulipas, Sinaloa and Baja California last week after suspected drug hit men killed the police chief of Nuevo Laredo.
Despite the move, drug gangs shot and killed at least 11 people across the three states during the week, prompting observers to declare the operation, dubbed "Mexico Secure," a failure.

I've recently read investigative researcher Michael Collin Piper's book "The New Jerusalem." He has written quite a lot over the past few years for the American Free Press, and has begun to amass a following for his books. "The New Jerusalem" is certainly a welcome addition to Michael Collin Piper's other illuminating works, and has much worthwhile information to share.
Piper's brilliant writings have been making a name for himself in the past few years. He is, of course, best known for the book "Final Judgment," which suggested that Israel's Mossad may have played the pivotal role in JFK's assassination--a thesis that appears to be corroborated recently by former nuclear technician and peace activist Mordechai Vanunu. Piper's book "The High Priests of War," which dealt with the neo-conservatives' (i.e., the pro-Zionist forces') successful efforts to spawn the Iraq War--and much more, if these diabolical neo-cons continue to be successful with their goals of creating WWIII--was certainly thought-provoking as well. "The Michael Collins Piper Reader" is equally intellectually invigorating, sharing insight into the many topics he has covered over the years. "The New Jerusalem" is like, pardon the cliché, icing on the cake; it just doesn't get much better than this.
When I first heard of Piper's book "The New Jerusalem: Zionist Power in America," I was somewhat skeptical--not that Zionist controlled America but that it would have anything to offer that I hadn't heard of before. Over the years, I have collected quite a little personal library dealing with such books, and have several books on my must-read list at any given time. Nevertheless, I have to admit that I was somewhat impressed with the amount of research that was undertaken in Piper's "The New Jerusalem," and it will go far as an expose' of the forces that sinisterly manipulate America's government.
Many people have heard of how Zionists control the media. Indeed, only Zionists, politicians, ignoramuses, or idiots could deny such--at least, with straight faces. And many people have written about such. For example, Kevin Strom/National Vanguard's piece "Who Controls the Media" is certainly one of the most thought-provoking pieces on such in the public realm, and you might think that little more could be said about the staggering--and overwhelming--Jewish control over the media. However, if you thought that, you'd be wrong, as Piper proves that the mind-boggling Jewish control over the media is but one small facet--one miniscule part, if you will--of the Zionists' manipulation over nearly every part of American life.
Piper names the names, and shows the Zionists' clout over American culture. It helps to explain why, even today, the head of the FBI, Robert Mueller, speaks at the ADL's meetings--an organization that has committed several major crimes since its inception, and has long been associated with key mob figures in its past (e.g., Meyer Lansky and Moe Dalitz)--and allows the ADL to indoctrinate newly hired FBI agents with the ADL's own special Jews-are-always-unjustly-persecuted mentality at the Holocaust Museum. Likewise, Piper's book helps to explain why politicians grovel at the feet of Zionists, kissing their hands as if princes of the netherworld.
When you're done with Piper's amazing expose', you're left with one simple thought: "Wow! I had no idea that Zionist influence was entrenched in every iota of America." Yet there can be no other conclusion, with this ground-breaking look into the darkest corners of America, shining the light of truth in every darkened crevice.
Piper offers many little-known facts to even the most scholarly individuals who have studied Zionism and its pernicious effect on American civilization, not to mention the world. For instance, in his chapter "Cold, Hard Facts & Figures: Zionist Power in America Today--According to Jewish Sources," Piper describes the "Mega Group." Citing the "Wall Street Journal," which itself described this "Mega Group" as "a secretive and loosely organized club of twenty of the wealthiest and most influential Jewish businessmen in America," Piper shines a brilliant light on this sinister group of Zionists who seek to promote their sickening mentality worldwide. Piper cites irrefutable sources, describing the Mega Group as such:
"Faced with the aging of the immigrant generation, the blurring memory of the Holocaust, and the high rate of intermarriage, the [Mega] Group tries to keep both the philanthropic momentum and the Jewish identity going. This community of the very wealthy enables its members to seek partnerships for their individual causes and learn from one another about their successes and challenges. . . . Mega Group members keep a low profile because they do not want to be in competition with established Jewish institutions. They take on special projects that they think can make a difference, such as supporting Jewish day schools or programs like the 'Birthright Project,' which sends to Israel any young Jew on this planet who wants to go."
Piper also exposes the Zionist ideology that seeks to essentially suppress ideas through the implementation of what could essentially be called Orwellian Thought Laws, masquerading under the euphemism of "hate crime laws," in his book. With an unmistakable stroke of brilliance, he rightly describes such measures as "nothing less than schemes designed to counter-act criticisms of Jewish influence in American policy--along with such liberty-robbing measures as the so-called 'Patriot Act' and other such legislation." Continuing he asserts that such sinister schemes are undoubtedly "part and parcel of a long-planned program to suppress dissent and set in place a program of 'thought control' with one purpose and one purpose alone: to assure continuing Zionist domination of the American experiment."

Violence across France has been abating in recent days
French Equal Opportunities Minister Azouz Begag has urged the government
to overturn a ban on collecting data based on ethnicity or religion.
Government bodies and private companies are barred from gathering such
data - which is deemed potentially divisive.
But Mr Begag told Le Figaro newspaper it was important to assess the
presence of minorities in various professions.
Job discrimination was a key complaint voiced by many youths who rioted
in immigrant suburbs in recent weeks.
"We need to see France's true colours," Mr Begag said.
"To do that, we need to measure the proportion of immigrant children
among the police, magistrates, in the civil service as well as in the
private sector."

But how do boxy, ugly, soul-free buildings improve our Western cities? Answer: they don't. And that's the whole idea.
Modern architecture - like modern art - is a leftist/Jewish cultural swindle designed to take the skilled, high-quality Aryan beauty out of the White countries and to replace that beauty with one-size-fits-all, talent-free junk that racial minorities and leftists have no trouble creating for the masses [since it takes no talent to create the junk in the first place]. In other words, "cultural Marxism-meets-building-construction." Below is a typical mainstream article about a recent rally led by an Internet activist named Hal Turner. The rally was in protest of several recent beatings administered by teenage blacks against teenage whites and the local police and media's unwillingness to cover, and charge the blacks with these obviously racial attacks.
At one point, one of the black mothers that attended the rally as a counterdemonstrator states of one of the beaten white kids, "He deserved it... He shouldn't have run his mouth."
Note how the article is entitled "Supremacists say hate crime laws not applied equally," but then proceeds on to acknowlkedge that only 3 of the demonstrators were members of the Nazi party. This is known as "spin," and is exploited by the media to in this case discredit the all too justifiable concerns of the white citizens of Kingston, New York who have grown tired of having their children beaten by blacks who then face no negative consequences.

Supremacists say hate crime laws not applied equally

NEO-NAZIS, white supremacists and segregationists came to Kingston from near and far on Saturday to join an Internet radio host's protest of recent assaults they perceive as hate crimes.
At least three members of the National Socialist Movement (commonly referred to as the American Nazi Party) were among the 40 people who gathered with New Jersey-based broadcaster Hal Turner for the event, which was held on Broadway in front Kingston High School.
An Oct. 7 fight [sic - it was a plain assault by nigger on white] near the school - in which white student Robbie Hedrick suffered serious facial injuries and black student Joseph L. Williams Jr. was charged with felony assault - was the impetus for Turner's rally.
"We're tired of our kids having the crap beat out of them," said a National Socialist Movement member identifying himself as Sgt. Drake of Florida. "(The assailant in the Oct. 7 fight) called this kid a 'white nigger' as he's plowing his fist into his face. If he was a white child, he would have been charged with a hate crime. It seems in this culture, hate crimes are only committed by whites against blacks."
Local police have said the Oct. 7 fight was not racially motivated.
"If it were reversed, we'd be seeing Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and nobody would be calling it a racist rally," said Hurley resident James Leshkevich.
"We're tired of the white children getting beaten by the blacks and other non-whites, and the school officials, city officials doing nothing about it," Leshkevich said. "In our opinion, when you call someone a 'white nigger' before you change their life forever, that's a hate crime."
Leshkevich said he was responsible for putting Hedrick's mother, Rebekah, in touch with Turner.
"I called her because I felt no one was listening to her," Leshkevich said. "This poor woman has ended up being the victim in all this."
Turner supporter Larry Marish said he was attending the rally to decry what he believes is the selective enforcement of the nation's hate crime laws.
"If it was reversed, and a white kid beat up a black kid, the white kid would be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law," Marish said.
Two teen-agers also were among the Turner supporters on Saturday, declining to identify themselves but saying they were friends of Hedrick's.
One of the youths said he agreed with some of what Turner and other speakers said, but "maybe not to that extreme."
Sharon Miani of Connecticut said she and her husband traveled to Kingston for the rally to voice their concern about violence in schools.
Miani was one of only about seven women who gathered to support Turner.
While the hourlong event was mostly peaceful - except for a few verbal exchanges across the barricades police erected to keep the protesters and counterdemonstrators apart - tempers flared and epithets flew as the Turner group left the protest area.
As Turner and his supporters walked back toward their vehicles, groups of people cursed them, leading to an angry and coarse verbal exchange that, at times, was kept from becoming physical only by the heavy presence of police officers in riot gear.
At times, it appeared the Turner supporters were trying to provoke attacks by their opponents.
"I'm waiting to get beat up," one of the protesters yelled at two men with whom he had bickered.

Saving Jews ... From Christians?

The Anti-Defamation League, devoted to fighting anti-Jewish bigotry, is America's most influential Jewish group. So what are we to make of the weird air of unreality in the ADL's public statements about Christians? Consider the recent address by national director Abraham Foxman to the group's annual meeting in which he called for a community-wide response to a growing threat.
Foxman spoke on November 3 in New York during a week when disturbing news stories were unfolding around the world. The riots across France by immigrant Muslim youths were building to a climax. These were the same youths who have been terrorizing French Jews for the past five years - assaulting individuals, firebombing synagogues, and desecrating Jewish cemeteries.
The same week, Iran's president was refusing to back down from his call to fellow Muslims to "wipe Israel off the map." Meanwhile in Egypt, TV viewers had just spent Ramadan enjoying a new drama series based on "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," the notorious anti-Semitic hoax.
If there is one religion that poses a danger to Jewish interests, clearly it's radical Islam. How strange, then, that in his speech Abraham Foxman held up the terrifying specter of, um, American Christianity.
"Today," said Foxman, "we face a better financed, more sophisticated, coordinated, unified, energized, and organized coalition of groups in opposition to our policy positions on church-state separation than ever before. Their goal is to implement their Christian worldview. To save us!"
Foxman warned that mainstream evangelical groups have "built infrastructures throughout the country... intend[ing] to 'Christianize' all aspects of American life, from the halls of government to the libraries, to the movies, to recording studios, to the playing fields and locker rooms of professional, collegiate and amateur sports, from the military to SpongeBob SquarePants."
"'Christianize' all aspects of American life," he says? This must mean that evangelical leaders want to Christianize us either by legal coercion, or by inspiration and moral example.
If Foxman means by legal coercion, his accusation is ludicrous. To take a controversial illustration that's in the news, Intelligent Design has drawn support from Christians (as well as others) and condemnation from the ADL. One may disapprove of letting teachers acquaint public-school students with a scientific critique of Darwinism. But I.D. in the biology classroom is an entirely different thing from "Christianizing" American life - a phrase that conjures the Spanish Inquisition.
If Foxman means that evangelicals would "Christianize" by inspiration and example, he's right. But so what? By definition, to be an evangelical means to wish to influence the culture in what Christians regard as a spiritually healthful direction. Good for them.
Broadly speaking, that direction is one that we Jews likewise have traditionally regarded as healthy and positive. Many classical Jewish sources - the Talmud, Midrash, Maimonides, and other authorities - speak of the need to bring humanity closer to the values of the One God. There is nothing exclusively "Christian" about favoring traditional marriage, lamenting the abortion culture, or defending a helpless woman like Terri Schiavo. Christians are only doing what we Jews ought to do.
So why vilify them? Historical anti-Semitic persecution cannot fully explain modern Jewish worries about Christian intentions. Surely Jews are rational enough to appreciate that we don't live in medieval Europe, but rather in a time of unprecedented Christian philo-Semitism, especially among conservative Christians. For the needlessly heightened state of Jewish concern about evangelicals, the ADL itself is at least partly to blame. The group has done much to exacerbate Jewish concerns. But what is it that drives the ADL to stoke our fears?
Money, perhaps? Let's be realistic. Naturally, a crusading nonprofit organization needs a bad guy to give a sense of urgency to its fundraising campaigns. And make no mistake: This particular organization's fundraising needs are substantial. The Anti-Defamation League has more than $52 million in yearly expenses, including Foxman's impressive $412,000 in salary and other compensation (according to publicly available 2003 tax information). That's a lot of expenses. The pressure to find the money to feed such a budget must be intense.
For whatever reason, hyperventilating about Christians makes Jews open their wallets. The anti-defamation professionals of the Jewish community are no dummies. Nor, I believe, are they paranoid. Or cynical. True, if these well-meaning folks are directing so much attention to the wildly exaggerated menace of Christian evangelicals, I don't see an alternative explanation to a financial one. However, this doesn't mean the ADL leadership is corrupt.
Rather, don't dismiss the Marxist insight that money can shape consciousness. Very possibly, a dynamic inherent in the nonprofit business molds the attitudes of those who work in this curious industry. Not cynics at all, they sincerely come to believe those things they must say to raise money.
Money, I would add, that could be far more usefully spent on other communal needs. Let's say, on religious education, which for Jews is the best assurance of a flourishing communal life. Consider how many Jewish kids could receive a Jewish education with that $52 million, how many Jewish souls could be saved from the oblivion of assimilation. In more ways than one, the ADL's success is our loss.

Relatively few dollars ever make it to paper, and many of them end up in
the pockets of Russian drug dealers and African politicians. Most dollars
in most people's accounts are not even graced with the image of a dead
president; when the end comes, they won't even be useful for starting
fires.
It is imperial vanity that keeps the dollar in business. And it is vanity
as well as the decline of the empire that will make it worthless.
Economists want money they can control. Central bankers want money they
can debase. And politicians want money they might get their mug on.
The trouble with gold is that it turns its back on world improvers, empire
builders, and do-gooders. It is money that no central bank promotes and
none destroys. It is money that exists only in a tangible form, a real
metal - a number on the periodic table.
"Gold goes up and down, just like other kinds of money," say economists.
Which is true. "You can protect yourself from inflation in other ways,"
say the speculators. True again. "Gold pays no dividends or interest," say
the investors. True. Nor will gold cure baldness or add inches to your
most private part. Even as money, gold may not be perfect. But it is
better money than anything else.
Gold was around millions of years before the U.S. dollar was invented. It
will probably be around a billion years after. This longevity is not in
itself a great recommendation. It is like buying a suit that will last
longer than you do; there is no point to it. But the reason for gold's
longevity is also the reason for its great virtue as money. It is inert;
it yields neither to technology nor to vanity.
The world improvers will always be with us. They will spend more than they
have, boss other people around, and generally make the world a worse place
to live. They will offer proposals like those of Thomas L. Friedman. The
nice thing about gold is that it is so unresponsive. It neither laughs nor
applauds. Gold is money that no central bank promotes and none destroys.
It is money that exists only in its tangible form - a real metal, a real
thing.
Paper money is a handy tool for the world improvers. They use it like
politicians use civil service jobs and generals use heavy bombers - to get
their way. Whatever the vapid ideal du jour, it takes money to pursue it.
Given enough money, the poor can be fed and housed. The middle classes can
be given free medical care and low-cost loans for houses. The upper
classes can be given contracts and favors. Enemies can be summoned up,
bombed, and reconstructed. Bread, circuses, war - the imperial program
costs money.
How to get more money for these great new programs, these marvelously
worthwhile ideals, these fabulous public spectacles? Gold flatly refuses
to cooperate. It doesn't even give a reason. Instead, it stays as mute and
reticent as a dead man in front of a television. No matter how persuasive
the advertising, the man is not going to go for it.
Paper money, on the other hand, barely needs encouragement. Start up the
presses! Lower the interest rate! Relax reserve requirements and lending
standards! Sell more bonds! Create more paper! Paper money is ready to go
along with anything. Like George W. Bush, it never met a boondoggle it
didn't like. Sooner or later, it ends up as worthless as the projects it
was meant to pay for.

The Clyde students were paired with 45 students from Scott and shadowed them through their classes, and after lunch, they had a question-and-answer period where they talked about racial issues. The reverse happened Thursday when the students from Scott High School traveled to Clyde.

Ethnonationalism and France
As we have mentioned before in this e-list, one of the most important things we learned in political science studies is that the main cause of violence in the world today is "ethnonationalism." That means conflict between ethnic groups, .e.g., the rioting by non-White Muslims in France in recent weeks. [Another example of ethnonationalism is 1990s-era Bosnia].
Yet, the Jewish-founded "anti-racism" groups in the Western countries continue to tell White people that racial "diversity" makes their countries stronger. [As a White nationalist website has noted, if that were true, then the White countries would have been weak countries back in the 1950s].
We find it amazing that so many Whites have accepted the idea that racial diversity can make any country better. However, we also feel that the Muslim rioting in France will alter the attitudes of many Whites about racial issues, even if those Whites don't exhibit their new attitudes openly. In fact, as more and more non-White immigrants arrive in the White countries, we predict that White nationalism will become strong in those countries, regardless of the current laws in many of those places which prohibit Whites from engaging in racial activism. Indeed, we can envision a pro-White political party gaining significant power in all of the White countries within the next 30 years, as Whites come to realize that they can't vote their way out of their [racial] quagmire by casting ballots for the standard, politically-correct candidates.

The recent riots in France quickly spread to almost all parts of the country. Burning cars, widespread looting, uncontrolled mobs roaming the streets and the government doing little about it to control the situation. Had this happened in this country, and no doubt it will, I could have understood the Great British Public trying to live with it but in France???
The French have always been the first to protest about unwarranted intrusions into their lives; look at the French truck-drivers, farmers, etc. complaining about British imports. One would have thought that such an intrusion by alien hordes in their own back yard would have created howls of protest and immediate aggressive action.
However, it would appear that where Asians are concerned, the French are as reluctant to defend their nation as 90% of our own countrymen are. Where are the truckers blocking the streets? Where are the farmers with their tractors? The French can give us a forty break in the way of showing loyalty to their country but in this instance, they have failed to act on what is, most definitely, the biggest threat to their way of life that has been seen since the days of World War Two!
It is not only just France; one can see the same reluctance to combat this threat in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia. What is the matter with all these people? Have their governments succeeded in mass-brainwashing entire nations or is it that the White populace doesn't want to be labelled, 'Racist'?
I rather suspect that the answer lies midway between these. No Western European government, including our own, wants to play the race card; they think it will cost them votes. The white nationals have been conned into believing that criticism of other races is totally unacceptable. Coupled together, these two factors have done much to damage our way of life and our heritage. The truth, however, is far different.
I am convinced that if any major party in Western Europe were to pursue a policy of total rejection of further immigration, they would win hands down at the next election. Once in control, that government could then bring about repatriation and start to cleanse their country of alien influences. It gives us, as nationalists, no pleasure in seeing those in power today, ignoring the problem time and time again. This is why we are here; this is why we carry on the fight despite overwhelming odds. Without us, without others like us, there would be nobody to drive home the truth. We have no choice but to keep trying and the one thing above all else that keeps us going, is our firm conviction that we are right!

"I arrived in Los Angeles when I was only 10 because my
mother had decided to follow the American Dream," he said.
"She left my father back in Mexico, in Chihuahua state, and
brought me here because she thought I would have here a
better future," recalls Luis, who is now 30.
But in Los Angeles, he found himself in a Hispanic barrio in
an eastern part of the city, which is home to the worst city
gangs. Children made fun of him at school because he spoke
no English.
To be accepted, he began selling drugs. He also joined The
Mafia Crew (TMC), one of the most violent gangs in the
second largest US city, which prides itself on being one of
the most multiethnic and multicultural in the world.
Since then, he has been in prison four times for drugs and
arms possession and conspiracy to commit murder. He
now says he wants to change his life, but without proper
documents and with a rap sheet like his, he realizes that
his chances of getting a job are not very good.
"It is difficult to break up with a gang because nobody accepts
you and nobody wants to give you a job," says Luis. "Police
don't believe you and in many cases you just return to the gang."
He says he has discussed this impasse with other gang
members on many occasions.
"We all have the same rage," he admitted. "Particularly
those who have come from Mexico and don't have
immigration papers."
Diego Vigil, a sociologist at the University of California at
Los Angeles, believes the city could have the same kind of
riots that shook France for three weeks. He insists they
could be even worse.
"This already happened in 1992," he recalls. "The parallel
already exists. And the ethnic and racial gap has since
widened rather than narrowed."
The 1992 riots erupted here after an all-white jury acquitted
four white police officers, who brutally beat black motorist
Rodney King, a scene that was caught on videotape.
The riots, which went down in history as one of the worst
episodes of violence on U.S. soil since the Civil War, left 54
dead and more than 2,000 injured.
But as the size of metropolitan Los Angeles grows and reaches
9.9 million people, half of them Latino, unemployment, poverty
and the housing crisis have also grown. Government services
have shrunk and schools have gotten worse.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the poverty index in
Los Angeles County has reached 16%, the highest in
California. Unemployment stands at 4.5%.
"Can Los Angeles become a hotbed of violence similar to
France?" asks Ernesto Cienfuegos, the Editor-in-Chief of
"The Voice of Aztlan," a bilingual news service on the
World Wide Web. His answer is "yes."
"Here in Los Angeles," wrote Cienfuegos on the news

I am a bit befuzzled dear readers. I am wacked-about-a-bit because of an insert I saw on Carte Blanche last night. I know, it's not reality tv but it's close enough. Basically there was an insert on that Afrikaner state of Orania and I thought: "Aha! It's those Pigs who ran away when Mr Mandela moved in! Let's see how they explain themselves." The reason I am so befuddled is because they were never asked to. Explain themselves I mean. How insane is that?
Basically the whole insert showed how absolutely wonderful they all are because they've managed to sustain themselves in the desert. They've managed to create a completely isolated self-sustainable, profitable 'country' through various advanced sustainable sorts of enterprises. I say well done on that. Very interesting indeed. But can we honestly believe that what they're doing is good, considering the motivations which lie beneath their every move?
For those of you who don't know Orania was created after the fall of Apartheid in about 1991 by Professor Carel Boshoff, who as coincidence would have it, is son-in-law of the late Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd. The whole place was bought by a group of Afrikaners with the aim of taking steps to ensure their collective survival as an ethnic group. My research tells me that because the whole shebang is run like a company/private organisation Orania can decide for itself who will be allowed into the village. If someone wants to become a stakeholder they are obliged to support the goal of the corporation - building an ethnic Afrikaner state - and agree not to hire black workers.

I suspect the government believes that it is better to leave them alone because doing anything else would just cause a stink. Plus they paid their cash which they made when and how? Let's make sure that the last one there dies all alone.

Cops say student attacked because of color Police say alleged attacker called himself a racist

The alleged hate crime attack on a Lewis and Clark High School student came after his attacker said, "I want to beat up one of these white boys," according to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Spokane police.
Tyson Leroy Brown, 21, of Spokane was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of malicious harassment, a Class C felony hate crime. Brown also had an unrelated warrant from Oregon, according to a Spokane police news release.
The 15-year-old victim was intentionally and maliciously assaulted due to his race, according to the affidavit obtained Friday.
The victim is white, and the alleged attacker is black.
Brown is accused of walking up to the student and knocking him unconscious with a punch to the head, then kicking the student as he was on the ground. The attack occurred Wednesday during a lunch break across the street from Lewis and Clark. The victim was treated and released at a hospital.
Brown was arrested a few blocks away. While he was being taken to jail, a police officer said Brown called himself a "racist," according to the affidavit. He added, "I should have kicked him until he'd never get up … I'm a racist, and I hate all you white boys."
Charlotte Beavers, Brown's aunt, was shocked to hear the racist language her nephew allegedly spoke.
"Oh my God. That's crazy. He had to be drinking or something. That's not him," she said Friday.
Beavers, who moved to Spokane three years ago from Blythe, Calif., said Brown is developmentally disabled.
"He's a really good kid. His mom passed away when he was younger," Beavers said. "I raised him to the best of my ability. He's got mental problems. Every time he does something they just stick him in jail. He comes out worse than when he went in."
She's been unable to visit her nephew in jail. She can't post any bail for him, because she has no money.
Brown violated his probation by moving from Oregon to Spokane, Beavers said. She said she asked him to come to Spokane rather than being alone in Portland, where he would have likely lived on the street.
"They got a warrant out for him (in Oregon)," Beavers said. "He was between a rock and a hard place."
Beavers said her nephew worked for a construction company for a while, which made him happy.
"He's mentally retarded," Beavers said. "He speaks fine. He just has problems knowing right from wrong … He's like doomed from the beginning."
Brown has four convictions on his criminal record for malicious harassment, robbery, assault and theft, according to the police news release.
In response to Wednesday's attack, the Spokane Human Rights Commission issued a statement calling all crimes of race-based hatred abhorrent to all responsible citizens and encouraging citizens "to take an active part in teaching our youth to resist and report instances of race-related discrimination" to the city or state Human Rights Commissions.

An Israeli army officer who fired the entire magazine of his automatic rifle into a 13-year-old Palestinian girl and then said he would have done the same even if she had been three years old was acquitted on all charges by a military court yesterday.
The soldier, who has only been identified as "Captain R", was charged with relatively minor offences for the killing of Iman al-Hams who was shot 17 times as she ventured near an Israeli army post near Rafah refugee camp in Gaza a year ago.
The manner of Iman's killing, and the revelation of a tape recording in which the captain is warned that she was just a child who was "scared to death", made the shooting one of the most controversial since the Palestinian intifada erupted five years ago even though hundreds of other children have also died.
After the verdict, Iman's father, Samir al-Hams, said the army never intended to hold the soldier accountable.
"They did not charge him with Iman's murder, only with small offences, and now they say he is innocent of those even though he shot my daughter so many times," he said. "This was the cold-blooded murder of a girl. The soldier murdered her once and the court has murdered her again. What is the message? They are telling their soldiers to kill Palestinian children."

I was in attendance at the Foundation for Economic Education's 50th Anniversery celebration at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City several years ago where Buckley was the master of ceremonies. His piggish manners were once again on display. The banquet speaker was Margaret Thatcher. After stumbling up to the podium Foster Brooks style and slurring an introduction, Buckly did not take a seat but stood directly behind Mrs. Thatcher. He then conducted a running commentary about everything she said. Virtually unreported by the mainstream media and given little prominence even by those outlets that have reported it -- probably so as not to alert too many -- recent weeks have seen a major clampdown across the planet. On both sides of the Atlantic, historians, researchers and investigators have been arrested, detained and deported to Germany to face charges of "Holocaust denial."
Among their number is German born Ernst Zundel, who immigrated to Canada in 1958 to work as a graphic artist. In the 1980's, he published a book called "Did Six Million Really Die?" and thereafter continued publishing and questioning conventional notions surrounding the Holocaust.
In 1985, he was charged with "publishing false news" and two famous trials occurred in 1985 and 1988. In his defense he brought in gas chamber experts, other historians and cross-examined a number of Holocaust survivors, who reportedly fell apart under questioning.
In 2003 he was arrested for an alleged immigration violation while visiting the United States. Thereafter he was deported back to Canada, where he was held in solitary confinement in a maximum-security jail for nearly 2 years before being deported back to Germany.
Upon arrival in Mannheim, Germany, the 65-year-old Zundel was charged with "Holocaust denial," an offence that carries a penalty of up to 5 years in jail.
Likewise, Germar Rudolph was also recently deported back to Germany to face similar charges. A German-trained chemist, Rudolf re-examined Auschwitz and Birkenau in 1989 for traces of Zyklon B, the gas the Nazis are supposed to have used to gas millions. As a scientist, he found the "gassing" claims to be scientifically untenable and therefore, in the eyes of German law, was judged to be "denying the Holocaust."
He was sentenced in Germany to 14 months in jail, in 1995, but fled the country. However, he was arrested on October 19, 2005, in Chicago, and deported back to Germany on November 14.
Similarly, British historian David Irving was arrested on November 11, 2005, while visiting Vienna at the invitation of students from the city's university. He was to have spoken of Adolph Eichmann's offer to Jewish leaders in Budapest in 1944, to release Hungarian Jews in exchange for cash or trucks.
However, before he could address students he was arrested on charges brought against him nearly sixteen years ago, of publicly denying aspects of the Holocaust.
According to an Austrian state prosecutor, if convicted he could face up to 20 years in jail.
Not only have America and Canada been deporting individuals to Germany to face the "Holocaust denial" charge, the Netherlands has too.
A Belgian national, Siegfried Verbeke, was charged with denying the Holocaust in August of this year, after he questioned the Anne Frank story. Two months later on October 6th, the Netherlands agreed to extradite him to Germany, where he faces 14 months in prison.
So why the sudden clampdown on Revisionists, and why now?
It's been suggested that the Internet has panicked the Zionists, who to a large extent owe their power and influence to the Holocaust. After all, Israel was founded on its memory and if it's proven to be a lie, or at least a gross exaggeration, the power the Zionists' hold over ordinary Jews could be undermined. For the very notion of the Holocaust has been used not only to extract financial redress from other nations but also to keep ordinary Jews compliant.
In effect, it has become like a grotesque doll wielded by witch doctors, used to keep individuals from asking too many questions, from thinking for themselves, or stepping out of line.
Formally the likes of Ernst Zundel might have been written off as cranks or extremists but the Internet changed that. It allows isolated individuals to question, often quite convincingly, the official line touted by the establishment and the mainstream media.
Moreover, the Internet illustrates that the accused are not "Holocaust deniers" -- in the sense that they deny the Holocaust ever took place -- or "right wing extremists" intent on resurrecting the Third Reich. That's what the mainstream media would have us believe, but almost without exception, the accused admit that the Nazis were guilty of gross human rights abuses. What's at issue here are the numbers of dead, how they died, and whether there was any clear plan of genocide at all.
In effect these men were engaged in historical inquiry, trying to establish the truth and broadcasting their findings, and that cannot be allowed in the New World Order.
Without even questioning what happened during the Holocaust, we should be asking ourselves: if it's necessary to exact such draconian measures against those who ask questions, what exactly is being protected? Are historical truths and the memory of Holocaust victims being defended, or is it one of the foundations of the New World Order, or Zionist power?
Finally, a 1948 Red Cross report details nearly a quarter of a million Jews died in Nazi concentration camps but found no evidence of Genocide. This is in distinct contrast to the figure touted nowadays by the mainstream media and portrayed by Hollywood. At the time, the Red Cross was a neutral body with no political axe to grind, so why the difference? And we need to ask ourselves not only why there is such a difference in the numbers, but also why those who ask such questions are being silenced?
Like they say: "he who controls the past, controls the present" -- and our perception of past events shapes the way we look at the world around us now. The Zionists understand this and know that the idea of the "Holocaust" is crucial to their power. Which is why such harsh measures are being exacted against those who ask too many questions.

RACISM among Irish toddlers will be tackled at a conference for
childcare providers in Dublin later this month.
International research shows that children can form prejudices
against other races even as babies and pre-schoolers. Workers in creches and
childcare facilities will be shown how games and activities can prevent such
discrimination forming.
The anti-racism initiative is being organised by childcare
committees in south Dublin and Fingal who hope it will provide a blueprint
for child carers across the country.
Julia Hackett, a co-ordinator on the south Dublin committee,
says it is important for children to acknowledge the differences between
people at an early age and learn to accept them.
"Children from a very early age acknowledge the difference
between people. We want to bring together the childcare professionals that
are working on the ground to develop practical anti-bias approaches that are
active, indeed activist, so that we can challenge prejudice, stereotyping
and bias," she said. "Childcare professionals want activities for the
children to encourage them to feel comfortable with the differences and
similarities between themselves and others.
"By listening to the professionals we will be able to find the
best way to integrate these activities and plans into the existing
curriculum rather than just having them as an add-on."
Hackett says the group hopes to be able to provide guidelines to
childcare facilities about the inclusion of different nationalities —
including providing halal meat on menus.
The conference will be opened by Brian Lenihan, the minister for
children, on Saturday. A special report looking at barriers to accessing
childcare for lone parents, parents of children with special needs,
travellers, asylum seekers and refugees will also be launched.
The research carried out by Fingal County Childcare Committee is
expected to show how difficult marginalised groups find it to get their
children into pre-school childcare.

On the other side, in Tijuana, it's a utilitarian affair: Immigrants-to-be are happy to have the sturdy, lightweight shoes
for the hike - or dash - into the United States.
Their designer is Judi Werthein, an Argentine artist who moved to New York in 1997-
legally, she notes.
On a recent evening in Tijuana, after giving away 50 pairs at a migrant shelter, Werthein waved the insole and pointed to Interstate 8, the main road between San Diego and Arizona.
"This blue line is where you want to go," Werthein, 38, said in Spanish.
"Good luck! You're all very courageous," she told the cheering crowd of about 50 men huddled in a recreation room after dinner.
"God bless you!" several cried back.

Some people change the world by hitting the streets and giving others a boost. Others change the world by putting money in little envelopes. Still others change the world by sporting bumper stickers that say things like, "My other car is a free-range chicken."
And then there are the people who write slam poetry.
OK, get ready to kick my ass, but it's really tough to live in San Francisco for any length of time and emerge as a lover of slam poetry. I understand how slam poetry might be acceptable to those who've never been burned in the holy hellfire of terrible slam poetry everywhere, all the time, but I shudder when I hear it. Hell, I shudder when someone says something in a really adamant voice and it just happens to rhyme.
Needless to say I'm just a lame honky who lacks the imagination and vision to understand street art. That's a given. But in San Francisco, slam poetry and really terrible paintings and coffee so strong that the smell of it makes your intestines flinch from several yards away are such a part of the fabric of everyday life that for years afterward, when you encounter just one of these things, suddenly there's a damp chill in the air and your hair feels greasy and you have a slight hangover and you want to scream, "Anyone can paint haunted-looking women with lime green faces and rhyme 'civilization' with 'alienation,' and if God didn't want us to eat animals, then why are they made of meat?"
So I had to skip the parts of PBS's documentary "Race Is the Place" (this week, check local listings) that featured slam poetry and folk songs and the word "rant." Even Kate Rigg's "Rice, Rice Baby," a parody of Vanilla Ice's hit that unpacks Asian stereotypes, felt like something of a retread.
Still, the comedians and the found footage and the commentary were worth the price of admission. Of course racism is a huge problem in America, one that's not acknowledged nearly enough, and this film does a nice job of reminding each of us of our prejudices, and of how intolerant and ignorant we are in the face of difference.
Still, when it comes to presenting interesting, new perspectives on race, VH1's "Race-O-Rama" is faster, more fun, more surprising, and has a more consistent tone. Although the highlights of "Race Is the Place" are memorable -- I loved comedian Ahmed Ahmed's reenactment of being stopped by a flight attendant and given a painfully polite third degree -- the quality of the material is fairly uneven.

Reading this story made me feel like Andrew O'Hehir must have been eavesdropping on many of my bar conversations with women over the last few years. It's one of those topics that you bring up on a date because it can go anywhere without offending anybody. It works to impress women in bars in major media markets such as Brooklyn and Chicago, as well as smaller places like Minneapolis. You are a sensitive man with a keen eye if you know what this or that street corner looked like before Starbucks moved in. If you happen to be going out with a Punk rocker, she'll love talking all about how Sonic Youth, the Pixies and Nirvana were cool before they got famous and started playing Arena shows too. If you happen to be dating an Urban Planning major, she'll love telling you about how the development of the interstate highway system destroyed vital innner city neighborhoods in the 1960's and 70's. If you are out with a graphic designer she will probably offer to give you a graffiti tour of the neighborhood. If you are trying to chat up a small business owner, she will fall all over herself telling you about how hard it was to get a lease renewed for her boutique in Wicker Park after all the yuppies moved in and started opening dog grooming businesses.
And speaking of dog grooming: I just happen to live pretty much on North Ave in Chicago not very far from the blue line Damen stop, i.e. ground zero for what Andrew O'Hehir is talking about. On my daily walk to the El I pass at least 30 dog grooming/pet daycare businesses almost everyday. I often wonder how on earth so many people can afford to have their pets professionally groomed in such places and also who on earth would pay more than most parents can afford for preschool to have somebody play with their dog while they are at work. Especially since nobody within miles of the neighborhood has any kind of normal job. Everybody is writer or a comic book artist or a film school student or an aspiring rock star. It's weird. It's not just gentrification, it's weird. When I was a kid, everybody's parents had normal jobs. We also had pets when I was a kid and so far as I remember we never once paid anybody to bathe our pets nor did we spend any money paying people to entertain our pets during the daytime. I don't think we were negligent pet owners either.
The thing about Wicker Park is that it's no mystery at all why such a neighborhood would be discovered by everybody. Not only is it minutes from downtown but it is served by several train stops and you can catch a bus on practically every street corner. In other words, it's probably one of the most accessible neighborhoods in all of Chicago. So acting like you somehow discovered it when hitherto a bunch nobodies lived there is a crock. It just makes sense that if you are going to move somewhere, you are going to move somewhere that's easy to get to.
Everybody cool in Chicago lives in Pilsen now by the way (18th st. blue line el stop).
But as with everything in this world, I think the overall issue that Andrew O'Hehir is talking about is directly related to women and especially the competition for women among men in such Bohemian places as Wicker Park and Brooklyn. It is one thing to spend all day everyday at the Rainbo Club drinking two dollar Pabst Blue Ribbons, living a rock and roll lifestyle, and talking about the new tattoo you got while the bartender plays your new favorite Arcade Fire song and your friends play pinball but then you sober up slightly one day in your late twenties and watch as your girlfriend walks out the door with a 20-something Investment Banker who is rehabbing a house he just bought in your neighborhood. You know? The women all defect. They defect to have babies. It's just not cool to go to alt-country shows three nights a week and smoke two packs of cigarettes while drinking Schlitz when you have a bun in the oven.
The driver of the gentrification Andrew O'Hehir talks about, therefore, is women. Women like stability. Women like health insurance. Women like men who have a dangerous rock 'n roll past but who finally pull it together and buy a house. Women defect from the Bohemian lifestyle in their late 20's and then men follow suit quickly thereafter along with the real estate. It has been that way since the time of nomadic hunter-gatherer societies, I imagine, and all through history. I mean seriously, who doesn't think Mesopotamia is so finished now that the Americans have started moving in. It used to be so cool to live in Babylon but now you can't find parking anywhere.
Speaking of parking... I was talking to a 20-something guy in a bar in Wicker Park in the middle of the afternoon the other day while playing pinball and the main thing on his mind was that he was trying to sell his parking space -- HIS PARKING SPACE AT HIS CONDO -- for 28,000 dollars. So, yes, I think the neighborhood is finished. In a way. At least you can find Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller, or Schlitz on special pretty much any day of the week within easy walking distance of your apartment, which is not only nice but also a requirement for any decent neighborhood to be considered inhabitable.

We're about to talk about the NBA dress code here, but, talking about the hip-hop culture and young men playing into these stereotypes, on some level, isn't legislating or even advising against, say, dressing in hip-hop clothes or making rap albums or whatever, isn't that letting the haters dictate to these young guys what their culture should be? Why should they not be involved in whatever culture they want to just because some middle-aged white columnist somewhere is going to say, "These guys are a bunch of thugs."
Well, if in fact it was just the middle-aged white columnists, I might agree. But it's more than that. It's also a community that looks upon these young men as not only leaders in fact but leaders in future. And I think that the influence that they have on my children, and quite honestly, King, on your children, it's something we've got to be careful of. As a society we've built these pedestals for athletes, and now we can no longer control it.
Now, you're right, it is essentially fuel for the haters to some extent. But I don't see, as we launch into the dress code, I don't see [NBA commissioner] David Stern so much as a hater. David Stern is a businessman.

But it's more than that that's taboo. What I've noticed over the years is that if anybody says anything that's racially questionable, they are immediately hammered down, kind of beyond all proportion to what it really ought to be. And while it seems like "Hey, good, the forces of good and right are winning out and these racists aren't having their say anymore," it seems to me like what we're really doing when that happens is that we're getting rid of this guy, quickly, so that we don't have to have a conversation about race.
Right. And I agree with that that we have become so sensitive to issues of race. People are afraid to open old wounds on one hand. There are a lot of people who mean well when they shout down those who would bring race and differences in race to the fore as it pertains to sport. But the flipside of it is, I can understand it because, as Harry Edwards said, and it's in my speech, those differences have been used far too often to demean African-American people.
The other thing is what you give in attributes in sports, particularly physical attributes, is often taken away from the mental aspect. So the better an athlete you are, and the more a so-called natural athlete you are, the dumber you are. It's the dumb jock syndrome. That's where the fear comes in, and I think no one wants to go down that road again, but we've got to find a way where we can have an open and honest discussion, lay it on the table, so we can get rid of the sensitivity. That's just another way to erase the line that separates us.
How do we get to that point? Given that legitimate point, what Edwards said, given that history, how do we get to the point where we can have that conversation?
Quite honestly, I think it's incumbent upon us in the black community to be able to demonstrate that we're not a monolith, that we have differing views on the same subject. That's always been the case. It's kind of like Malcolm Gladwell's tipping point. The more we talk about it, the more it spreads and seems to become acceptable. When I say "we" I'm talking about African-Americans. The more we can discuss it, the less we have to bristle when it's a legitimate statement or question.
It's OK. Debate is fine, and we have to demonstrate that debate is fine. But we have to set boundaries and can't allow it to descend back to the depths that it once did.
Because Gladwell also said in an article that, you know, we talk about how hypertension is prevalent in African-American males as opposed to white males. We talk about how breast tumors grow larger and more often in African-American women than white women. We talk about the prevalence of diabetes in African-American and Latino-Hispanic people by comparison to whites. But we can't talk about physical differences in sports? It doesn't make sense.

Nobody has revealed the details, but Judith Miller declares herself "very satisfied" with the severance package she got from the New York Times. In an interview, she described herself as a "free woman." Then there is this interesting line on what she means by that. She said she is free from the "convent of the New York Times, a convent with its own theology and its own catechism." Who would have thought of the Times as a convent?
The image of the nun jumping to freedom over the convent wall was a staple in the heyday of anti-Catholic propaganda. Of course the nun almost never had the help of high-powered lawyers extracting a big severance deal from the convent.
I suppose Ms. Miller means to say that the Times is a hothouse of stifling political orthodoxies, and I have no doubt that is the case. In her coverage of foreign affairs and intelligence before the Iraq war, Miller reported what everybody -- including Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Hans Blix of the UN, and the intelligence establishments of every major nation -- thought they knew about Iraq's possession and threat of WMDs. When it became apparent that much of that information was wrong, the Times was in a bind, and many in the convent blamed Ms. Miller for having turned the paper into a tool for promulgating what was then the prevailing wisdom.
But then the bind was doubled when Ms. Miller went to jail rather than reveal her sources, notably Mr. "Scooter" Libby in the vice president's office. Was Judith Miller heroine or goat? In its news and editorial sections (the two being nominally distinct), the Times decided to celebrate Ms. Miller as a champion, even a martyr, for the freedom of the press. But after almost three months in jail, she decided to cooperate with the special prosecutor, thus restoring the freedom of the Times to return to type. She was made the scapegoat for the paper's embarrassment over not having challenged what everybody thought they knew in 2002 and 2003 about Iraq's weapons and intentions.
Not, of course, that there was a rational basis for such a challenge. It is simply that things turning out to be other than what everybody thought them to be is an intolerable insult to the Times' presumed exemption from human fallibility. But at least we may be confident that Ms. Miller is a well-paid scapegoat, and, if she is getting less than a million in advance for that book, she needs a new agent.
Anti-Catholic innuendos notwithstanding, a convent, a theology, and a catechism are all things of beauty. In the service of Christ and his Church, they well warrant the surrender of a life in devotion to transcendent truth. As I would like to think Ms. Miller knows, that is very different from having spent 28 years of her life surrendering her intelligence in order to toe the line of the smelly little orthodoxies of the New York Times.

A judge has a very modest task. He is to deal with a case according to an honest reading of the constitutional text. That is his narrowly defined job. As much as is humanly possible, his preferences and convictions, even his most deeply held moral convictions, do not determine his judicial conclusions. He may be strongly opposed to abortion, but that stance does not prevent him from doing his job anymore than a strongly pro-life police officer or fireman is prevented from protecting an abortion clinic. (In traditional language, the crucial difference is between degrees of complicity -- direct and voluntary or remote and involuntary.)
The circumstance of the legislator is dramatically different. Unlike the judge, his job is to make law, and to make law in accord with his best understanding of justice. That best understanding is determined by conscience informed by the truth. A legislator who supports laws withdrawing protection from the unborn and countenancing the direct and intended killing of the innocent is in clear conflict with natural justice and the teaching of the Church, and that of necessity has grave consequences for his communion with the Church. It seems odd that Mr. Sullivan has so much difficulty understanding that.
Or maybe it is not so odd. As most priests know from long experience, when someone attacks the Church, it often takes only a little probing to discover that, in more cases than not, their anger is the result of a morally disordered life. In Mr. Sullivan's case, it takes no probing at all, since he is so very, so incessantly, public about it.
* Please hold the letters about the use of "buggery." It's a fine English word, although unfairly attributing a nasty practice to Bulgarians. In a more cosmopolitan time, before perversions transmogrified into social causes, it was understood that some people did queer ** things in private. The story is told of Winston Churchill encountering on a social occasion a member of parliament who had been arrested for soliciting in a public loo. Churchill said, "Oh, so you're the chap giving buggery a bad name, are you?"

The phone call came on Saturday saying that Fred had died. He was the oldest of the six Neuhaus boys and I the youngest. He died at home in Thousand Oaks, California. It was cancer and, after the usual treatments, the last month was devoted simply to making him as comfortable as possible. He is the first of the eight children to die, although twelve years ago it was thought I would have that dubious distinction. (I have written about my ordeal with cancer and my near-life experiences in a little book, As I Lay Dying.)
Fred retired from the Los Angeles police force about twenty-five years ago. After Delores, his first wife, died, he married Nadine, also a nurse, who lovingly sustained him through thick and thin.
Fred was a Goldwater Republican before many people had heard of Goldwater. In those days I was thought to be very much a man of the left, deeply engaged in the civil rights battles and opposition to the Vietnam War. He was a talented and relentless arguer, and we would go at it into the small hours of the morning. But blood is thicker than politics. In later years we became the friends that we were not as children. (Anyone who comes from a large family knows how siblings divide into two or more families.) It was easier after I was forced to admit that I had been wrong about some things -- most importantly, that Communism could in no way be construed as "liberalism in a hurry" with which the free world could easily coexist.
The relationship of the last decades was mainly a matter of telephone conversations every week or two in which we more or less agreeably surveyed the state of the Church and the world, but mainly of the world. Fred had by that time become a conservative Presbyterian, although his congregation belonged, I think, to the more liberal Presbyterian Church USA. Prior to his time with the LAPD, he had served a hitch in the Air Force.
Fred never went to college, but I suspect he was the smartest of the Neuhaus boys. He read FIRST THINGS avidly and was frustrated when he could not find a typo or grammatical error in an issue. I assume he was a good cop. I know he was a fine husband, father, and brother. Rest in peace, Fred.

When I was a Lutheran, I quite regularly received honorary degrees from Catholic colleges. Giving me an honorary degree was thought to be a very ecumenical thing to do. After I became a Catholic, it was a very controversial thing to do. I'm not complaining, mind you. Honorary degrees are of limited utility, although I am still thinking that something nice could be done with all those wonderfully colored hoods. A very large quilt?
A long time ago I spoke at the commencement and received an honorary degree from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, about an hour from Kansas City. I had rather lost track of what was happening there, but after Mass last Sunday the new president, Stephen Minnis, came by with several faculty members for brunch. It seems a great deal has been happening with Benedictine.
Enrollment, now at about 1200, has almost doubled in the last few years, and a big draw is Benedictine's palpable seriousness about being a throughly Catholic school in line with John Paul the Great's exhortation Ex corde ecclesiae (from the heart of the Church). Of course President Minnis and his colleagues were making a pitch. That's their job. And it is a very impressive pitch indeed. In any event, when students and parents ask about seriously Catholic colleges, as they regularly do, I'll be suggesting a careful look at Benedictine in Atchison, Kansas.
