God's blockbuster

NEW YORK -- When C.S. Lewis wrote his series of seven Narnia children's fantasy books, he envisioned them as stout Christian allegories. And in the new feature-film adaptation of the first book, which opens Friday, there are some unavoidably Christian images: A sinner is saved from death with a drop of magical potion that some audience members believe represents the blood of Christ; a majestic lion and Christ-like figure offers himself up to a Crucifixion-like death to pay for a young boy's sins and is resurrected.

Still, when director Andrew Adamson was asked recently how he dealt with the books' religious content in making The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, he chuckled and said: "I ignored it." In fact, it may be that Narnia's most significant Christian component is only onscreen for a brief flash, during the credit sequence, with the appearance of the name Walden Media.

Little known outside of Hollywood, Walden is about to have its coming-out party with the $150-million (U.S.) adaptation of Narnia it co-produced and co-financed with Disney. At a time when the U.S. Christian community is feeling empowered with its role in last year's re-election of George W. Bush and the growing belief that Hollywood is interested in making movies that reflect conservative values, Walden is a Medici-like figure with a profound interest in spreading its gospel of family values and education.

Named in tribute to Thoreau's beloved Walden Pond, the company was founded in 2001 by Philip Anschutz [right], the founder of Qwest Communications, which offers phone, cable and Internet services in the United States. Worth an estimated $5-billion (U.S.), with interests in real estate, professional sports teams, energy, transportation, agriculture, newspapers and telecommunications, Anschutz is an unusual figure whose methods fly in the face of Hollywood's tradition of blowhard moneymen.

He lives in Denver, demonstrates little interest in socializing with filmmakers and actors, and hasn't given an interview since 1974.

He is also an evangelical Presbyterian. Douglas Gresham, a Christian minister who is the stepson of C. S. Lewis and his literary executor, as well as a co-producer on Narnia, told Variety that, though the subject of religion didn't arise during negotiations for the rights to the Narnia books, he and Anschutz now speak, "almost exclusively about God and Jesus. I admire him for bringing Christianity into the mainstream of everyday life as something that's quite acceptable and normal."

And Anschutz is quietly changing the face of movies, making family-friendly entertainments such as the girl-and-a-dog comedy-drama Because of Winn-Dixie, the 2003 adventure drama Holes, the two Imax films Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey and James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss, and last year's spectacular $110-million flop, Around the World in 80 Days.

Narnia tells the story of four English children shipped out of London during the Blitz who stumble into a magical but benighted fairyland controlled by an evil White Witch. A prophecy foretells that they will lead the creatures of Narnia in an epic battle to defeat the witch and win their freedom.

Anschutz's adult-oriented studio Bristol Bay Productions also recently produced the action-adventure Sahara and the sex-and-drugs-and-rock 'n' roll biopic Ray, which won Jamie Foxx an Oscar this year. By most accounts, Anschutz practises a hands-off approach and even when he does meddle, there are rarely any hard feelings: Last year, writer-director Taylor Hackford noted that Anschutz insisted the harsh profanity contained in the early drafts of the Ray script be toned down. After loudly protesting against the demand, Hackford said he came to believe in the wisdom of Anschutz's request and made the changes. The film was granted a PG-13 rating in the U.S., which enabled it to be seen by a wider audience than if it had been rated R, and Foxx thanked Anschutz from the podium when he won a Golden Globe Award.

Though he is interested in bankrolling movies with Christian themes, Anschutz's principal interest seems to be in supporting educational initiatives. For example, roughly 300,000 guides have been distributed to educators across the U.S. and Canada for Narnia, prompting students to think about the role of the imagination and the historical context for the film.

Though not every pint-sized audience member will understand that context, the filmmakers worked hard to anchor Narnia in a particular time in history, while avoiding troublesome stereotypes. "I think there's a rather dishonourable tradition in Hollywood in giving, particularly children, the idea that evil characters are dark," suggested the British actress Tilda Swinton, who plays the White Witch. "She doesn't look Jewish . . . [or] like an Arab, and I figured it was extremely irresponsible to do anything other than make her look like the ultimate white supremacist, which is what she is, and as Aryan as possible. Because apart from being a fantasy film, it's also an historical film. These are Second World War children, and their father's fighting fascism, and I thought she should look like a Nazi so I actually threw [in] a Nazi salute."

The filmmakers did make one significant alteration to the source material. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which was written in 1950, is run through with the sexism common for its time. It includes a scene in which Father Christmas distributes weapons to a trio of children in anticipation of battle. "Battles are ugly when women fight," he tells the girls, Susan and Lucy.

The line caused some consternation for Adamson and led to a discussion -- characterized by the producer Mark Johnson as a "fight" -- with Gresham over the director's desire to change the line. "That may have been acceptable in the 1940s," recalled Adamson, "but after doing two movies that I think are empowering for girls [he co-directed Shrek and Shrek 2], I didn't want to them turn around and say: 'Susan, you don't get to use that bow, you have to rely on your brother.' " Gresham, who is the protector of C. S. Lewis's words, accepted a compromise line that doesn't single out the girls.

If little girls take the lesson of empowerment to heart and help make a hit out of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, there will be lots more where that came from: Walden and Disney are already developing the first Narnia sequel, Prince Caspian.

SWINTON MAKES WHITE WITCH AN ARYAN VILLAIN

TILDA SWINTON insisted on giving THE NARNIA CHRONICLES' terrifying WHITE WITCH a makeover for new film THE LION, THE WITCH + THE WARDROBE because she wanted her to look like an Aryan warrior. The British actress has always hated the way Hollywood's witches are portrayed as dark-skinned, crooked women and she wanted to give the genre a new look.

She explains, "I've been exposed to the stereotype of witchiness, which hasn't necessarily frightened me. It's all that cackling, screaming and shouting. "What children are most frightened of is the kind of unemotional, unpredictability and coldness; the idea that somebody might switch at any moment.

"Disney has now given us a new kind of villain and I'm happy to have been a part of it. In my mind, there has been a dishonourable tradition in Hollywood of giving children the idea that villains have to be dark. "I didn't think it was responsible, at the moment, for a globally-available American film to be making the epitome of all evil look either like a Jew or an Arab.

"Also, the children are second world war children and their father is away fighting Nazis. I thought it was important, since she is the epitome of all evil and the ultimate white supremacist, that my witch looked Aryan. I thought it was interesting to give the world a really super white villain for a change."

STAUNTON -- A white-supremacist newsletter [sic] that has been circulating around Virginia ended up on driveways in Staunton on Thursday, angering some city residents.

The Aryan Alternative, published in Kirksville, Mo., by a group called Vanguard News Network, charges that Mexicans are importing diseases to America and that Jews are attempting to exterminate white people. Residents in Waynesboro and Charlottesville have reported receiving the publication recently.

Jennifer Dungan of Staunton said she was shocked when her 5-year-old son picked up a copy of the publication from her yard. "I got back inside and I read it, and I almost fell over," Dungan said. "It's just the biggest bunch of garbage I've ever seen." "I hope to think that the citizens of Staunton and Augusta County will put themselves above this," said Baldwin Jennings, who also got a copy.

Glenn Miller, the paper's director of distribution, said certain neighborhoods were targeted for distribution because "white people live there." "We want to provide an alternative news and commentary source for white people," said Miller, who was contacted by phone in Springfield, Mo.

Staunton police said they had received some calls about the publication but were not investigating because there is no ordinance against its distribution.

Ancestral pride is fine, but race hatred is something else

My mother remembers the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression and World War II. Like many of her generation, she also retained a few terms from those eras. Like the habit of referring to African Americans as "colored." That always startles me. But what my 85-year-old mother will not say is a racial slur. She stammers and stutters to even recount other people's offending language: "Well, you know, they said the, that word, you know."

She means the N-word.

This is because despite some out-dated terms, at the most basic level, mother gets it: ''You can change your religion, where you live and what you do for a living. But you cannot change your race,'' she says, ``so you might as well not hold it against anybody.''

Given this upbringing, it is disturbing to hear about the California mother who is raising her daughters as Hitler's version of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Perky little Lynx and Lamb Gaede are 13-years old, blonde- haired and blue-eyed. Those God-given facts of hue make them superior in their mother's eyes. April Gaede has arranged for her daughters to appear at Aryan gatherings; playing guitar and violin while singing about white supremacy.

Teen People magazine planned to feature the girls in February. The article was canceled after it was discovered the piece would portray the twins as simply having white pride. A magazine staffer made a deal with the girl's mother. Reportedly, the terms ''Nazi,'' ''supremacist'' and ''hate'' were not to be included in the piece. Omitting the words would make telling the truth difficult.

The twins deny the Holocaust, calling it an exaggeration. They model T-shirts with a yellow happy face doctored to look like Adolf Hitler. In one video on their website, Lynx is coaxed for the camera. "What are the 14 words, Lynx?" asks an off-camera female voice. Lynx bops up and down with little-girl eagerness and answers, "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." "That's right," the female voice praises. The words are a well-known quote in Aryan circles.

The twins also are shown posing with Tom Metzger, a former Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon. Metzger is best known for bankrupting his supremacist movement. In 1990, an Oregon jury found Metzger responsible for inciting skinheads to murder an Ethiopian immigrant. Metzger and members of his supremacist organization were ordered to pay $12.5 million.

The twins seem to have been brainwashed into believing that the criticism is simply because they are proud of their white race. My mother could set them straight. Mother is proud of her ancestors -- all white people. She can trace several back to the American Revolution. But she'd never use that self pride to leverage hate against other people. And unfortunately, when some people talk about ''white pride'' that is really what they are doing.

Mom's knowledge of her family lineage also did not get in the way when she first saw my father. She saw a handsome olive-skinned man to whom she would soon open her heart. She didn't see a Mexican man to whom she felt superior.

Mother's own father wasn't so enlightened. He held many hatreds, often ranting that he didn't like black people, Indians or Catholics. Mom always says she thought that odd, because growing up in the middle of Kansas, the family didn't know any black people, Catholics or Indians. Now, she laughs that not only did she marry a man who was part indigenous, she converted to Catholicism, too.

Another thing Mom always says: ''Sometimes you wonder why God gives children to some people.'' Yes, but he also gives children the ability to grow far beyond their parent's limitations. The twins' website describes them this way: ''Neither one is the leader or the follower, both of them are strong-willed and have minds of their own.'' If the descriptors are accurate, one heck of a teenage rebellion may be brewing in the Gaede household.

'U' to prevent hate crimes through education

E. Royster Harper announces website, hotline to improve campus relations

The windy stretches of the Diag may be growing chillier, but to E. Royster Harper it has nothing to do with the season. Earlier this fall, an alleged incident of racism prompted the University to examine the campus climate and its role in preventing hate crimes through education. Last night, Harper, the University's vice president for student affairs, unveiled some elements of the University's new anti-hate and bias campaign in hopes of warming up the campus climate.

"What students will say is that this place can be pretty cold," she said. "We have to warm it up for each other in that regard." Speaking at an LSA Student Government meeting, Harper announced a new hotline and website aimed at improving race relations on campus. Both are scheduled to launch early next semester. The website will provide links to student resources and include a hate-crime reporting form that will allow students to report incidents more quickly, University spokeswoman Julie Peterson said. The campaign will also include a hate and bias hotline, 764-BIAS, operated by the Office of Institutional Equity, which will also provide training for responding to hate crimes, Harper said.

At the campaign's launch, Harper said the University will spearhead an aggressive advertising campaign of posters as well as bus and newspaper ads to raise awareness on the necessity of respecting campus diversity, Harper said. In part, the campaign is a response to student concerns surrounding recent alleged hate crimes on campus, notably the purported incident on Sept. 15, when two students allegedly hurled racial slurs and urinated on two Asian students.

Campaign planning began shortly after the alleged incident, when University officials began organizing forums and meeting with student groups about how to improve the campus climate. Most recently, campaign developers met with the Student Advisory Board of the Office of the Dean of Students to get feedback on the planned advertisements and methods to spread awareness about existing resources. Harper said the campus is very open in some respects regarding diversity, but closed in others. "What I like to say to people is that we're not as bad as people like to say we are and we're not as good as we aspire to be," she said.

Harper added that while isolated incidents might always occur because of a lack of common sense or loss of control, what the University can do is improve education. Peterson said the definition of a hate crime is often unclear -- a predicament that leads to difficulties when addressing the problem. The University hopes to clarify this by clearly communicating the values of the University community, she said.

At the meeting, Harper also expressed her fear that the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, an upcoming 2006 statewide ballot proposal that would ban race-based admissions at public universities in Michigan will divide the campus and create a hostile environment. [Not discriminating against Whites = hostile environment.] She urged student leaders to unify the campus regardless of the outcome of the ballot initiative.

Police Investigate Howard Co. Hate Crimes

(WJZ) ELKRIDGE, Md. Howard County Police are currently investigating several hate-bias crimes that took place in Elkridge Wednesday night. At least ten homes or vehicles were spray painted with swastikas, and police are offering $300 to anyone who may have information about the person or people responsible. Investigators believe no one was targeted and that the graffiti was sprayed randomly.

WJZ'S Alex DeMetrick spoke with one of the victims. "It's sad. It's you know, a hate crime basically. People don't know the lord, they're going to get upset and do things like this." said Sharon Robinson.

Police initially responded after a citizen called to report that her vehicle had been spray painted overnight, but discovered that several other vehicles as well as garage doors in the area had also been victimized in the same manner. Victims were located on Ducketts Lane, Kyle Leaf Court, Lori Lane and Karas Walk.

Police believe that the spray painting took place sometime between 10 p.m. on Nov. 30 and 5:30 Thursday morning. Due to the number of victims in this case, police believe that someone may have seen the suspects in the area where the vandalism occurred and are asking those with information to call police at 410-313-3200.

Hate crimes charged in store trashing

OAKLAND -- Prosecutors filed hate crime charges today against two members of a Black Muslim group who allegedly trashed a pair of Yemeni-owned Oakland liquor stores because they sold alcohol to African Americans. The charges are among a litany of violations filed against Yusuf Bey IV, 19, and Donald Eugene Cunningham, 73, in connection with the Nov. 23 incident in which a roving band of African American men wearing suits and bow ties rampaged through the West Oakland stores, using pipes to smash refrigerator doors and liquor bottles.

Both men made initial appearances in Alameda County Superior Court, where a defense attorney said she believes evidence in the case does not support the hate crime allegations. "I don't believe there was a hate crime involved here,'' said attorney Lorna Brown, representing both defendants at today's hearing. Judge Winifred Smith refused Brown's request to lower bail for Bey and Cunningham, who remain in custody at Oakland's Glenn Dyer Jail. Bail for Cunninghman is set at $170,000, while Bey's bail is $110,000. "These are very serious crimes," said Smith, who ordered both Bey and Cunningham to stay away from the two businesses and their employees should they be able to post bail.

The incidents on the night before Thanksgiving set off a wide-ranging investigation by Oakland police, who expressed fears that community tensions over liquor sales would escalate and that store owners might arm themselves.

The police probe was stepped up earlier this week when one of the businesses, the New York Market at 3446 Market St., was gutted by a fire set by an arsonist. One store employee claimed he was abducted at gun point shortly before the blaze and held against his will for about 12 hours. The employee, Tony Hamdan, was found Monday afternoon locked in the trunk of his car in the parking lot of a Safeway store in El Cerrito. Police say they have been unable to link Monday's fire and abduction with last week's rampage.

Bey and Cunningham are affiliated with Oakland's Your Black Muslim Bakery, the centerpiece of a network of businesses founded three decades ago by Bey's father. The elder Yusuf Bey was the patriarch of an East Bay Black Muslim group inspired by the Nation of Islam, but which had no affiliation with the Nation and its leader Minister Louis Farrakhan. In an interview on Wednesday, the younger Bey's mother condemned the incidents of vandalism but said Black Muslims in Oakland are growing increasingly frustrated by a large number of liquor stores in the city's flatland areas, where blacks are the predominant racial group. That frustration, she said, is compounded by the fact that many of the stores are owned by Muslims of Middle Eastern descent, which she said is troubling because the Muslim religion forbids the use of alcohol.

The charges filed today include eight felonies against Cunningham involving the incidents at both stores. The charges include vandalism, false imprisonment and violation of civil rights because of the victim's nationality, race, ethnicity or religion. The latter charge is deemed a hate crime under the California penal code. Six felony charges were filed against Bey, including vandalism, false imprisonment and a hate crime. The charges against Bey all stem from the attack on San Pablo Market and Liquor, the first of the two businesses ransacked and the one where the crimes were captured by a security camera. No charges were filed against Bey stemming from the attack on the New York Market because witnesses to that incident were unable to identify him, Brown said.

Hip-Hop Predicted Liquor Store Trashings Long Ago

SAN JOSE, Calif.--When black men in bow ties tore apart two liquor stores in Oakland, Calif., the night before Thanksgiving, the security-camera footage was all over the news. Today, two members of an Oakland black Muslim group were charged with hate crimes and false imprisonment in the incidents. Police are investigating whether the alleged vandalism is connected to an arson fire earlier this week that destroyed another market, and the kidnapping of the store's owner.

To much of mainstream America this issue is new. But African Americans coast to coast have a longstanding issue with the infestation of corner liquor stores that they believe peddle poor-quality foods and dangerous alcohol. They believe that these stores devalue not only the surrounding property but also the lives of those who live near them.

Proof that this is not a new issue can be found in numerous rap songs over the years. The early 1990s were full of racial tension between the black community and liquor stores. On Public Enemy's song "1 Million Bottle Bags," Chuck D proclaims, "They drink it thinkin' it's good/ But they don't sell the s*** in the white neighborhood!"

Earlier, in his now highly-famous song "Black Korea," Ice Cube hit L.A.'s Asian community with a mountain of racial slurs in rhyme form, closing with the now-prophetic line, "So pay respect to the black fist/Or we'll burn your store right down to a crisp."

The ugly clash between Korean Americans and African Americans over the liquor store issue is covered in excruciating detail in Jeff Chang's book "Can't Stop Won't Stop." The recent violence in Oakland reveals similar animosity toward store owners who are often Arab and sometimes Muslim.

An ironic twist is the role rappers themselves have played in the promotion of alcohol consumption in the hood. On the same album in which Ice Cube attacked the Koreans, he endorsed St. Ides Malt Liquor. Dr. Dre, Yo-Yo, Wu-Tang, King Tee, EPMD, Scarface, Snoop Dogg and even Rakim have all promoted St. Ides. This is not to mention Run DMC's countless mentions of drinking "8-Ball" (Olde English 800) or the Beastie Boys' world famous "Brass Monkey." Clearly the Hip Hop community has played both sides on this issue.

I grew up in the 1980s in the suburbs outside San Francisco. If my friends and I wanted alcohol, we went to Bay View /Hunters Point, because we knew an Arab shopkeeper who was always willing to sell to under-age kids. There was no such supplier in the area where I was raised. I knew at 15 that if I wanted to buy alcohol, I had to go to the ghetto.

In the rap song "Refuse to Lose," the MC's of Non-Phixion, lament this phenomenon: "When I was 10 I used to buy liquor with no I.D./ Thinkin' back subliminally, the store clerk was tryin' to kill me."

This anger at being devalued is at the center of the destruction of the Oakland liquor store. It does not excuse it, but it explains it. Many African Americans and other ghetto citizens feel they are being targeted for a slow death by liquor store owners. The group most active in opposing the liquor stores is often black Muslims. They do this because in the Qu'ran it states, "And obey Allah and the Messenger Muhammad and beware of even coming near to drinking or gambling and fear Allah." This situation gives rise to an intricate tension that involves race and class as much as it does faith.

As a Muslim convert I feel that there is no legitimate reason that Muslim Arabs from Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Palestine or Jordan should be selling products to black people that they would never try to sell in their own countries. However, I also feel that to vandalize and burn down these stores also reflects badly on Islam. The Muslim shopkeepers, vandals, arsonists, and kidnappers have all done wrong by their neighbors and by Islam.

Somewhere between tearing the building apart and doing nothing lies a non-violent solution that can be enacted by the community. The time for peace is now. However, unless and until the issue of liquor-store infestations of black ghettos are properly addressed, I fear we may see more of the opposite.

Info Alert: New Pew Poll Reveals Growing Isolationist Trend and View that U.S. Support for Israel Contributes to a Decline of Global Image

A new study by the Pew Research Center has revealed a rising isolationist trend in the United States among both the general public and influential opinion leaders. Opinion leaders were drawn from sectors such as the news media, foreign affairs and security specialists, state and local government officials, academic and think tank figures, religious leaders, scientists and engineers, and military leaders. In addition to the overall isolationist trend, a significant proportion of respondents reported U.S. support for Israel as a major factor in the decline of America's image abroad.

In regards to U.S. hegemony and interventionism abroad, the study demonstrated a split of opinion in willingness to accept the end of America's status as sole superpower. Religious leaders, scientists, and engineers believe it would be acceptable if an equal military power emerged. However, the majority of state and local government officials, foreign policy analysts, military leaders, and about half of the general public favor policies designed to extend the U.S. position as the lone superpower.

Yet even with continued support for extending U.S. hegemony, there has been a downward shift in interventionist tendencies. Approximately 25% of the public now favors the U.S. being the most active abroad of the world's leading powers, compared to 33% in October 2001. In addition, the proportion of Americans that agree with the statement that the "U.S. should mind its own business internationally" rose from 30% in October 2001 to 42% at present. In regards to America's global image, 66% of respondents believe that the U.S. is less respected than in the past. Of this proportion, large majorities of the public and of opinion leaders cited the Iraq War as a critical factor in the decline of America's image. However, only 43% of respondents in the general public believe that a decline in America's image is an issue of major concern.

Nonetheless, many of the influential opinion leaders polled did cite America's tarnished image in the world as one of the most severe problems facing the country. In the words of one foreign affairs specialist, America has seen, "a loss of international confidence and respect due to the administration ramming a series of ill-considered political, economic, and security policies." One media executive said that America has "a lack of credibility as a fair and just world leader."

Other than the Iraq War, America's support for Israel is seen as a key factor in international dissatisfaction with the country. Majorities of those polled from every influential group of opinion leaders agreed that the support for Israel is major cause of global discontent with the U.S. 78% of news media, 72% of security experts, 72% of military leaders, and 69% of foreign affairs specialists agreed with this assessment. However, there is a significant gap between opinion leaders and the general public on this issue. Just 39% of the public believes that U.S. support for Israel is a major factor that causes the nation's global image to suffer. 52% of the public cited the issue as only a minor factor.

In regards to Iraq, the general public and the selection of opinion leaders all have serious doubts about the original decision to take military action and of the Iraq War's impact on the broader War on Terrorism. In addition, there is also significant pessimism present regarding the likely future of Iraq. Lastly, President Bush's prospects for success in his call for democratic reforms in the Middle East are perceived highly pessimistically.

The general public and military leaders are still the most evenly split on whether military action against Iraq should ever have been taken. 45% of the public says it was the wrong decision to take action, with 48% in favor. 47% of military leaders say the war was the wrong decision, with 49% in favor. Among the other opinion leading groups sampled, though, views were much more polarized against the decision to go to war. News media, security specialists, religious leaders, foreign affairs experts, and academics all oppose the original decision by margins of over 70%. An overwhelming 88% of scientists and engineers oppose the decision.

On the issue of the Iraq War's impact on the broader War on Terrorism, the general public and the military are again the most evenly split. Among the public, there is an exact divide, with 44% each saying that the Iraq War has either helped or hurt in the overall struggle against terrorism. Among the military leaders polled, 47% believed the war has helped, with 45% saying it has hurt. State and local government officials and religious leaders held fairly closely divided views on the issue, though with a visible lean towards the "hurt" perception. Other opinion leaders questioned all had far more pessimistic views on the effect of the war, with ratios generally over 70% believing that it has hurt in the effort against terrorism.

Lastly, only 34% of the public believes that President Bush's call for greater democracy in the Middle East will succeed. None of the opinion leading groups polled had a more positive view than the public. However, the plurality of the public and the specialists polled did view the push for democracy as good idea, but as an idea doomed to failure. Only small proportions of respondents answered that the idea had a good chance of success.

Pew's research data shows a clear trend towards non-intervention that has been created as the country sees the far-reaching and profound adverse effects of the Bush administration's foreign policy. In regards to Iraq, vast segments of the American populace and even many military leaders have taken views opposing the rhetoric and policies of the administration. It is also a significant development that large majorities of the influential opinion leaders polled agree that U.S. support for Israel is a major factor in America's tattered image abroad. However, the data also shows that although a significant proportion of the U.S. populace does agree with this assessment, much more still needs to be done in educating the public about the backlash that this policy, among many others that the administration holds, continue to cause.

The Debate We Are Missing

The Israel lobby is out of control. It shuts down any rational debate or even any discussion of Israel's actions. Three past heads of Israel's security service, Shin Bet, have said that the actions of the present Israeli government are self-destructive, yet those views are not heard by the American public.

The many organizations that make up the Israel lobby include several whose main effort is to intimidate editors and producers in the media and prevent an open discourse about Israeli policies and our uncritical support for those policies.

What Is Good for Israel Is Not Always Good for America

The agenda of AIPAC and of the Israel lobby has never been the agenda of America in the Middle East. The present government of Israel is undermining long-term American interests and the war on terror. Even the half-step of disengagement from Gaza and a few of the Jewish colonies on the West Bank is not what Palestinians and a majority of peace-seeking Israelis have dreamed of and struggled for.

Israel, Stop Spying on America!

The close relationship of the Israeli lobby with the embassy of Israel and its right-wing government has created conditions for widespread espionage that has undermined the formation of credible policies for the United States in the Middle East.

Our national security has been breached and incidents have continued almost up to this day.

Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger said that he could not "conceive of a greater harm to national security than that caused by" Jonathan Jay Pollard, a Naval Intelligence officer currently serving a life sentence for selling a roomful of classified documents to Israel.

Now we have another break in American intelligence, this one resulting in the arrest of a mid-level Defense Department analyst, Larry Franklin. The case directly involves high-ranking AIPAC officials, Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman. AIPAC vigorously defended both men for months before firing them to preserve AIPAC's credibility with their contributors and with members of Congress. Franklin is accused of passing classified information on to the AIPAC officials, who in turn called the Israeli embassy and a reporter at the Washington Post. Franklin approached AIPAC because he wanted them to influence President George W. Bush.

Promoting the agenda of the government of Israel, even using U.S. classified information to do so, has been one basic strategy of the Israel lobby.

The Lobby Reveals Itself

Lobby spokespersons are quite brazen in describing how they operate:

"It is routine for us to say: This is our policy on a certain issue, but we must check what the Israelis think."

And they like to work in the dark:

"A lobby is like a night flower: It thrives in the dark and dies in the sun."

Three Israeli generals are on the program for AIPAC's annual policy conference this week, but not a single American in uniform is there. If an American goal in invading Iraq was to ensure Israeli security, then why didn't AIPAC honor one of the wounded Americans instead of three Israeli generals?

New Legislation is Needed

Join the campaign to support legislation that will apply to all lobbies working on behalf of foreign governments. We propose a Foreign Lobby Registration Act (FLORA), an act designed to make lobbies supporting foreign governments more transparent and accountable to the American people. It will also make clear that those lobbies do not work on behalf of American interests but, in fact, work to support the narrow interests of a foreign government.

More than 60% of American voters according to a Zogby International poll believe AIPAC should be registered as the agent of a foreign government. If implemented under a FLORA, this would mean transparency in resources used by AIPAC dedicated to furthering the right-wing government of Israel. Contributors would have to be publicly listed. It would also put an end to the undeserved tax-exempt status that some foreign lobbies enjoy.

Ex-Rep. Findley: "It's Time to Exit Iraq!"

On Dec. 1, 2005, at a public forum, on Capitol Hill, ex-Rep. Paul Findley (R-IL), urged President George W. Bush to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq-promptly. He offered a four point plan to that end. Findley said that his greatest fear is that Bush "will persist in his quest for a military victory." He praised Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) for demanding an "early and complete exit from Iraq." Findley called for ending the U.S.' "ugly role in the killing fields of Iraq."

Washington, D.C. - On Dec. 1, 2005, a public hearing, sponsored by the Council for the National Interest, (CNI), was held on Capitol Hill, in Room SC-4 of the Capitol Building. (1) It dealt primarily with how the U.S. should exit from the immoral and unjust Iraqi War, which was launched based on a pack of lies. (2) The blood stained conflict has already taken the lives of 2,110 American military personnel, over 100,000 Iraqi civilians, and has cost the U.S. taxpayers $223.4 billion, with no end in sight.

The featured speaker at the event was ex-Rep. Paul Findley (R-IL). He served in the U.S. Congress for over 22 years, 1961 to 1983. Then, he made a career-ending mistake of advocating for the U.S. a "fair and balanced Middle East policy," particularly towards the Palestinians, who were languishing under the Israeli occupation. (3) The Israeli Lobby took exception to Findley's position and he soon joined the ranks of ex-Congressmen. (4)

Mr. Findley said, at the forum, "We meet at a time of great peril to our nation, the most menacing I have known in my lifetime. I believe the invasion of Iraq is the worst U.S. blunder in a century, certainly the most menacing to the well being of the America that we have known and cherished in years past. If we fail to exit Iraq promptly, our nation and our world risk being engulfed in a wider, more grisly conflict that could suddenly degenerate into an enormous, costly clash of civilizations-Christendom versus Islam. I choose my words carefully. I do not exaggerate."

Findley, now 84 years of age, wrote a best selling book a few years back about his very unpleasant experience with the Israeli Lobby, entitled, "They Dare to Speak Out." (5) Doesn't his clash with that "special interest" sound a lot like what happened to the presidential ambitions of Vermont's ex-Governor, Howard Dean, in 2003, after he suggested the U.S. should have an "evenhanded" policy in the Middle East? As soon as Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT), began growling about Dean's remarks, Dean's campaign, which also had taken a strong anti-Iraqi war position, faded quickly from the scene. Translation: You can mostly thank the hawkish Lieberman, and people who think like him, for the national Democratic Party not putting up an anti-Iraqi War candidate, in 2004, against the dysfunctional George W. Bush.

Recently, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) came out against the Iraqi War. Mr. Findley praised Murtha's conduct, along with the anti-Iraqi War statements of Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb), Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) and Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA). He labeled the trio as "great heroes" for demanding an "early and complete exit from Iraq...We must face grim reality. Our massive combat assaults in Iraq are unavailing. They have increased, not diminished, the insurgency."

Findley lamented the fact that "Iraq is now a killing field and [that]our government-our president and our Congress-are held responsible for the slaughter." The former senior member of the House Middle East Committee didn't think much either of President Bush's Annapolis speech, of Nov. 30th, and his future schemes for the war. Mr. Findley said the president "admits no error and offers no change in doctrine or tactics...Iraqi distrust remains our forces' greatest handicap. Many, if not most, of the Iraqis who fight back see our forces as an occupying power, not a liberating one."

As Chairman Emeritus of the CNI, Mr. Findley has kept busy over the years lecturing around the country on Middle East issues. He has also been an ardent champion for the cause of the USS Liberty and the long quest of the survivors of that Israeli attack of June 8, 1967, for justice and closure. (6)

Mr. Findley strongly urged President Bush to quickly make "a clear announcement of precise plans for a total U.S. exit by a date certain...If crystal clear, it will, I believe, inspire an immediate reduction in anti-American insurgency and go far in dismissing the widely-held belief that U.S. forces invaded Iraq mainly for Israel and oil, not to bring freedom and democracy to the Iraqi people...Ultimately, [the] Iraqis will have to solve their own internal conflicts. If civil strife is inevitable, the departure of U.S. forces by a date certain should mercifully shorten the misery."

Mr. Findley said his suggestions to President Bush about a proposed announcement to end the war must also include: First, an order for the "immediate cessation of combat initiatives." Second, that the "total withdrawal of all U.S. military, diplomatic and contractor personnel soon after the new directly-elected government takes power." Third, that the president must "specify a procedure under which certain U.S. units can be exempt from withdrawal," but only with the approval of the "new Iraqi government" and the "UN's Security Council." And, fourth, that the president must pledge "generous U.S. funds" to rebuild Iraq.

Mr. Findley closed his speech by underscoring that his greatest fear is that "President Bush does not yet grasp the enormity of the peril at hand and will persist in his quest for a military victory. Our best hope is that a rising tide of public and congressional protest will change his mind...The suggested presidential announcement will also curb speculation about an emerging U.S. empire, help refurbish America's worldwide moral standing, and end the ugly U.S.' role in Iraq's killing field."

Finally, if history is any precedent, do not expect to read any account of Mr. Findley's compelling comments made today on Capitol Hill about his plan to end the Iraqi War, in any media organ or outlet controlled or under the influence of the Establishment. (7)

Wow, he is really reaching isn't he? Jewish supremacists are of course the real supremacists. I denounce racial, ethnic, or religious supremacism. I Believe in the right of all people and all nations to run their own affairs and preserve their own heritage. Such a belief is the opposite of racial supremacism. It is the Zionists who are trying to control the policies of other nations! As usual, they accuse everyone else of what they themselves are doing! For new readers of www.davidduke.com, please read my book, Jewish Supremacism, I have a mountain of quotes from mainstream Jewish sources to prove that they are the world's ultimate supremacists.

As for that statement that I am a "wanna be politician," What a cheap shot. I wouldn't say that someone who has been elected to two different public offices and who received a majority of the European American vote in major campaigns for U.S. Senate and Governor as well as higher vote totals in Presidential primaries than did many sitting U.S. Senators -- is a "wanna be politician." Actually they are incorrect for another reason in calling me a "wanna be politician." I would like to think that I am far more of a statesman in the tradition of the American republic as I have never sacrificed my honor for political gain as most politicians who sell out everything to get elected. I could have said what is popular and perhaps been a Bill Clinton, but I chose instead to tell the whole truth and be David Duke! A politician is perceived as someone who simply wants to be elected; I am someone who has a Cause and uses politics to advance it.

CNN also labels me a former Klansman, but somehow the media doesn't label George Bush as "former cokehead George Bush," or Teddy Kennedy as "hero of Chappaquiddick" or Sen. Robert Byrd as "former Klansman" or some of the members of the Black caucus as "former Black Panthers," though all of that is undeniably true. They don't call Ariel Sharon, "Butcher of Beirut" or Nelson Mandela, "former terrorist." They make sure never to give my proper title of Dr. David Duke, as they almost always give the "Dr." title in discussing Dr. Martin Luther King. Yet, by any standard, my doctoral degree is at least as legitimate as his. When they don't like you they can pull out all the stops.

Also notice the dig at me in the end, criticizing the Media in the Mideast for not calling me a former Klansman, white supremacist, or tax offender.

Could you imagine them ending a news piece on Bush saying:

"The media in Britain didn't mention the fact that Bush once was a habitual user of cocaine."

Or... "The media there didn't point out that Bush, who lied American soldiers into war, himself avoided Viet Nam with a cushy job back home. " Or...

"The media didn't mention that George Bush has authorized mass torture of suspects and stripping away of fundamental American rights with the Patriot Act."

Get the picture?

Such is the power of our Jewish-dominated media. But, now through my response you can see how they manipulate the American people.

In addition, they even try to bias their watchers by their caption in the news report.

In fact, I never blasted the U.S. I repeatedly stated in every public appearance that I was an American Patriot, even an American Partisan. That the American people don't want war and want friendship with all and that it is only the Zionists and their servants who want war and therefore must, with lies, manipulate the American people to war.

I pointed out that the ONLY Mideast nation that has made terroristic attacks upon America was Israel. Israel made terroristic firebomb attacks against American installations in Egypt in the Lavon Affair and the surprise, murderous attack on the USS Liberty. Israel recently awarded and called heroes the Jewish terrorists who attacked American facilities in Egypt.

I also pointed out that there have been no agents of Mideast governments convicted of major spying against the U.S. and doing great damage to the U.S. while Israel lauds the spy who so harmed America, Jonathan Pollard. I pointed out the current espionage cases involving AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee). I pointed out the terrible harm done to America and the Mideast in the Iraq War, a war orchestrated by the Neocons for the benefit of Israel.

In reporting my trip to Syria, it was generally accepted by everyone who heard me speak that it helped lessen anti-American feeling in the Mideast, by showing that the American people, as compared to the Zionist-controlled politicians, want friendship and peace with the world.

The Grand Mufti of Syria, the respected and preeminent Syrian religious leader, welcomed Dr. David Duke and thanked him for bringing Syria the true feelings of the American people. He said,

"The Iraq War has resulted in not only the harming of many thousands of Iraqis but also thousands of Americans dead and many thousands of Americans hurt. For what is this war but, as Dr. Duke has shown, a war for Israel in which both Arabs and Americans have been harmed? Thank you, Dr. Duke for your courage in bringing us this message of peace and of friendship. My God's peace and love be upon both our peoples."

A professor of history at Damascus State University commented,

'The Zionists now lie about Dr. David Duke and label him a White supremacist. The truth is, as Dr. Duke has shown in his book, Jewish Supremacism, that Israel is the most extreme example of racist supremacy on earth."

"We researched Dr. Duke's writings, some of which go back now over 30 years. We found that he wants to preserve his European heritage and traditions just as we Arab Muslims seek the same for our own countries. We respect him for that as he respects us."

But the admission that the entire Mideast Media was completely supportive of my visit and uttered not a negative word – that they just simply reported the news as it happened, should offer a lot encouragement to us. For if the media in these countries is free of Jewish extremist control, think of the opportunities we have to educate hundreds of millions of people on the real dangers of Jewish supremacism, something that will certainly rebound back into European-American countries. Many world scholars, leaders, media personalities are beginning to express the ideas and facts found in my books.

Read Jewish Supremacism again, read the last two chapters on Jewish led immigration policies and the Jewish world-wide threat. So the Wolf Blitzer, CNN report by a pro-Israel extremist has inadvertently revealed the biased reporting that I speak about every day.

I did not blast the United States. I love my country unlike the Jewish supremacists who will harm my country for the sake of Israel.

Last Christmas I saw George Bush on the news lighting a Jewish Menorah erected in the White House. I stopped for a moment and said to myself, "Somethings wrong with this picture. Isn't this the same White house forbidden to erect a cross or even the traditional manger scene at Christmastime.

Perhaps nothing is more indicative of the double-standards that exist for Jews and Gentiles than to contrast the government and media treatment of Christmas and Hanukkah. The American Jewish Committee, the ADL and many other groups have been at the forefront to ban any mention of Christmas from our public life. No groups have worked harder to take Christ out of Christmas. The American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Council of Presidents, American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and hundreds of other Jewish organizations have been at the forefront of the effort to destroy American Christian traditions.

As a result of their litigation and bullying, the Christian part of Christmas has been stripped away from much of our national life. Not only are Christmas carols banned from public schools, but now even the mention of breaks such as the Christmas Holidays is being quietly phased out in favor of politically correct terms such as "winter holidays." The White House has for a long time not dared to display a cross or even a manger scene for fear of the Jewish powers.. .So take a look at the picture of George Bush lighting a Jewish Menorah at the White House.

You won't see any pictures of him erecting wooden crosses or lighting any candle-adorned crosses at the White House. Recently major Jewish organizations got raging mad because the structure of the podium of the Republican national convention they say resembled a cross. Of course it is easy for just about anything to resemble the common shape of a basic cross. But just the slight resemblance drove them to rage. When you have a persecution complex as many of them do, it is easy to believe you are being persecuted at every turn.

A Reuter's news article of Sept 1, 2004 By Mark Egan has these excerpts:

Where are the Jews who are so concerned about "separation of Church and State,? now that Bush has for the first time in White House history lighted a menorah?

And what exactly is the celebration of Hanukkah that George Bush solemnized at the White House?

The word Hellenization is just a substitute word for Americanization. You see, everyone else in the world that comes to America is supposed to be quote, "Americanized, " everyone of course except the Jews. For them we are supposed to say isn't it great that they want to maintain their separateness and not merge into the great melting of races and creeds in America! Of course melting pots aren't always what they are cracked up to be. Problem with melting pots is that the bottom often gets burned and the scum usually rises to the top.

Any Gentile who would dare to say that Jews want to remain separate and not truly assimilate into American culture would be labeled an anti-Semite. If that's true, I guess almost every Jewish organization is quote "anti-Semitic,? because all of them preach against intermarriage and assimilation.

The fact-of-the-matter is that Hanukkah is an extremely ethno-phobic celebration of a Jewish military victory and massacre of the pro-Greek Syrians. While a billion Christians celebrate peace on earth, good will to men, the Hanukkah celebration celebrates annihilation of Jewish enemies. I am not exaggerating in the least bit. Most of the Jewish holidays are celebrations of massacres of the their enemies. Seems odd, doesn't it, for a religion to revere military victories as their most sacred times.

In fact, the meaning given to Hanukkah by almost all Jewish leaders and scholars is that Hanukkah symbolizes the resistance of the assimilation of the Jewish people, religion and culture. That in itself is not so bad; all people who want to maintain their traditions, culture and even the heritage of their children, should resist assimilation. By the way, the popular terms today for assimilation of the European-American people with the Third World are multiculturalism and diversity. Somehow those terms are not supposed to apply to Jewish supremacists, for they need to keep themselves pure, and non-assimilated. We are supposed to have our people and culture be assimilated and subsumed, but they are supposed to resist assimilation at all costs.

Any resistance we have to losing our genetic and cultural heritage through assimilation is called chauvinism, intolerance and ultimately racism by the media. Jewish resistance to assimilation is called "heroic" and an absolute necessity. Bush trumpteted that he was committed to Israel as a Jewish state. Note, he did not say multicultural state, diverse state, but as an all caps JEWISH state, which of course it is. With three million Palestinians living under an oppressive Israeli military occupation, some even still dare to call Israel the only democracy in the Mideast!

What is so incredibly hypocritical about the whole thing is that the same media that lauds assimilation and diversity for European Americans has no problem with Jews resisting assimilation in the countries in which they dwell. Of course, that is because the media is dominated by the same group that celebrates Hanukkah. Most of the Jewish groups promoting Hanukkah do so use it as a lesson to vigorously condemn intermarriage between Jews and Gentiles.

Imagine for a moment if there was a White House ceremony that symbolized White rejection of assimilation and multiculturalism and stridently opposed intermarriage of Whites and nonwhites. Do you think the media would be silent?

Every major Jewish organization in the world has programs dedicated to preventing marriage of Jews and non-Jews. How often are they compared to those organizations of Whites who oppose intermarriage? How many times have you seen the hollywood stereotype of the White Southerner opposed to race-mixing? How many of you listening to this broadcast know that by law Israel does not legally recognize marriages between Jews and non-Jews? How many times has the media compared those Israeli laws to the old anti-intermarriage laws in most of the American states?

How are these double standards maintained without any outcry? In truth the double standards that we witness every day in our nation reveal the extent of Jewish power and influence over our media, government and culture.

Their power has led us to a Mideast policy that led directly to the tragedy of 911. It led us to the ongoing catastrophe of the Iraq War, a war created by Jewish Neocons and promoted by the Jewish-dominated media. It is a war that may be good for Israel, but absolutely horrible for America. That war is not worth the life of even one good American, much less the lives of over 20,000 maimed, blinded, crippled or killed American military men and women in a war that is only making our terrorist enemy more popular around the world and making America more hated! And, it has caused the death of at least 100,000 Iraqis, including tens of thousands of women and children. Jewish supremacists are even advoctating an expansion of the bloodshed to what they proudly call World War IV.

Unless that Jewish-supremacist power over America is broken our heritage and freedom will not survive and the world will be washed in blood.

The 10 gruesome deaths yesterday is the deadliest incident for US Marines since 14 were killed by a roadside bomb on August 3 near Haditha, located about 135 miles northwest of Baghdad. Those Marines were traveling in a lightly armored amphibious assault vehicle when it hit an IED and exploded in a large fireball.

The names of the White occupation soldiers killed yesterday were withheld pending notification of their White relatives back home.

One of Zimbabwe's last remaining white farmers, a 68 year-old Don Stewart, was strangled and burned to death in an attack inside his home on November 27th. Mr. Stewart was attacked before dawn in the bedroom of his fortified homestead near Norton, 25 miles west of Harare (aka Salisbury). He was one of the last 300 white farmers left in Zimbabwe. There were 4,000 of them five years ago.

A gang of blacks broke through the roof of Stewart's house with axes and crowbars and strangled Mr. Stewart in his bed. Then they poured gasoline all over his body and set him on fire.

Don Stewart was a native-born white Rhodesian who knew no other home than the once proud, prosperous and peaceful land which has been turned into a slice of hell by the deranged Marxist Robert Mugabe and his gang of Communist thugs from the ZANU-PF party. Deranged is a word I use advisedly; the private opinion of most of the international diplomatic community is that Mugabe has indeed gone insane.

After five years of continuous violence, threats and intimidation directed against him and his family, Stewart sent his British-born wife Margaret back to England, but remained himself to try to carry on the farm alone. His son, David, worked alongside him on Ingwerati farm and lived a mile away in a cottage. He has also been the target of threats from the ZANU murderers and has been ordered to leave his land.

Zimbabwe's summer rains finally started last week, but few crops have been planted because the blacks have murdered, terrorized, and driven off most of the White farmers from their lands. Native African agriculture is so primitive that it is incapable of feeding the starving nation. In addition to driving the farmers off their land, almost all of the seed grain, livestock, and agricultural equipment on Zimbabwe's farms have been stolen, in some cases by the police.

The two girls have spent more than 30 hours organizing and mounting posters of survivors' stories, explanations of the killing centers and concentration camps, and the long, snaking timeline that begins in 1914 and ends in 1945. The students agree that their favorite piece is the Kristallnacht case, which commemorates the "night of broken glass" in 1938, when Nazis carried out a massive pogrom against Jews in Germany and Austria.

Police say Mayers admitted in a written statement to ruining five VHS tapes in the library July 5. Mayers, a one-time follower of imprisoned white supremacist Matthew Hale's defunct World Church of the Creator, wrote in his statement he believes the films are full of lies, according to police. About a week after the library incident, Mayer was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct after twice giving a Nazi salute in a Lake County courtroom to a man charged with a hate crime, according to officials.

Irving Finds and Signs His Books In Austrian Jail Library

Wiesenthal Center Director Explains - The 'Value' of Laws Against 'Holocaust Denial'

MIMS, Fla. -- New information points to four Ku Klux Klan members as almost certainly responsible for the unsolved murders of two civil rights activists who died when their home exploded in 1951, Florida officials say. Attorney General Charlie Crist announced Friday that investigators had begun excavating the site of Harry and Harriette Moore's home, which was blown up on Christmas night in 1951. Detectives were searching for detonators and other evidence that could prove what type of explosive was used. The four suspects, all members of the Florida Klan at one time, had experience with dynamite, said Frank Beisler, an investigator with Crist's office.

Beisler said the major break in the recently reopened investigation came about a month ago when he interviewed a man to whom one of the bombers had confessed. That interview "shook everything we'd been doing up to this point," Beisler said. "We had a lot of extraneous individual leads that didn't fit anything until that day," he said. "We're going to solve this case. I'm positive now."

Beisler would not elaborate on the interview or name the suspects, but he said three of the men had previously been fingered by the FBI but never charged, while the fourth was interviewed but was never considered a suspect. At least one of the four is now dead, he said.

Moore organized the Brevard County branch of the NAACP in the 1930s and worked to register black voters in an area of the state then ruled by Jim Crow laws. He died when his house exploded in Mims, about 35 miles northeast of Orlando. His wife died nine days later.

The excavation could take from two weeks to four months, depending on how much evidence is recovered. Authorities know the suspects had experience with dynamite, and they expect lab tests to show TNT was used in the explosion, Beisler said.

Even without further evidence from the house, investigators now have enough for an indictment, he said.

The investigation into the Moore murders was initially closed in 1955, then reopened briefly in 1978 but led to no charges. In 1991, Florida state police conducted an investigation and a subsequent review in 2003, but evidence was still ruled insufficient to pursue any suspect.

Crist reopened the case again late last year. "New evidence continues to mount every day, including today," he said. The couple's daughter, Evangeline Moore, said she hoped to finally close the painful chapter of her parents' deaths.

"I was coming home the two days after Christmas. When I got off the train, this is what hit me in the face: Your father's dead, your mother's in the hospital," she said. "What kind of Christmases do you think I had? What kind of Christmas do you think I still have?"

Support for Israel is declining among young Jewish Americans, according to a poll by the Israel Project. American Jews remain strongly behind Israel overall, but there are "disturbing signs" that their support could shift "in the wrong direction," said Frank Luntz, the biased pollster who conducted the survey.

Of the 800 American Jews Luntz questioned, 67 percent of those age 65 or older said they were strong supporters of Israel. But only 53 percent of those age 18 to 29 felt that way. That number has dwindled in the last 20 years.

Luntz said parents should start talking to their children about Israel earlier. ["It kills people, steals money, lies about it."]

"The earlier you are when you learn about Israel as a Jew, the more personally affiliated you are with the country ... the more that you feel toward it spiritually," he told the New York Sun.

The poll also found that 61 percent of American Jews "personally talk about or defend Israel to non-Jewish people" a few times a year or less, and 43 percent said they rarely or never do.

Among all age groups, 82 percent of those polled said they support Israel, and 63 percent said they support the country "strongly."

6-Year-Old Faces Expulsion For Touching Classmate's Rear

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A 6-year-old boy was facing expulsion for touching a classmate's rear end, and his mother said she thinks the school district is going too far, WLWT-TV in Cincinnati reported. Yolanda Kirk said she's not disputing Northwest Local School District's right to discipline students.

"Don't get me wrong -- it's not right for any child to physically touch another child," she said. "I don't condone it."

A letter from the school district claims that her son, Blake, engaged in sexual acts, displayed excessive affection, engaged in inappropriate touching and used obscene gestures. But Kirk said her son's potential expulsion is excessive. "He's 6 -- he just came out of kindergarten," she said.

Kirk claims Blake was forced to sign a paper without a parent's consent admitting he was wrong, and then a school security guard purposefully embarrassed him. "He took him to classroom and told my son's peers what he'd done, and said, 'Don't you ever touch anyone's private areas. Are there any questions?'" Kirk said. "You don't have to embarrass a child like that."

She said after the first time Blake touched a girl's bottom, he was suspended. But she said the second time wasn't intentional. "He accidentally touched the little girl's bottom -- he told me accidentally -- and he apologized to the little girl," Kirk said.

But Humphreys refused to get up, according to the New York Daily News. "I think I've got a right to sit here," she said, on board the M-1 bus which traverses Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. Posters of Parks were taped to the first seat behind the driver on all city buses, asking passengers to leave them empty in her honour. Public transport systems around the country took part in the tribute. Some passengers unwittingly sat in the seat, but promptly got up when told of the tribute.

Many patted the seat and expressed gratitude to the former seamstress. Humphreys was reportedly the only one who did not.

Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat on December 1, 1955 helped spark the modern civil rights movement in America. She died last month aged 92. President Bush signed a Bill yesterday authorising a statue of Parks in the Capitol's Statuary Hall. "What had begun as a simple act of civil disobedience ended up galvanising the modern movement for civil rights," he said. She will be the first black woman represented in Statuary Hall, where many states have statues honouring notable people in their history.
