DURHAM -- Nearly seven months after Durham residents rallied against the message of racial hatred conveyed by three cross burnings, the city has become the site of another incident that also may have been racially motivated.
On Friday morning on Alabama Avenue, two residents encountered a vehicle spray painted with an orange "KKK."
The episode was similar to one in October on nearby Carolina Avenue, when a Jewish couple discovered that someone had sprayed the letters "KKK" in yellow on their car.
The same month, someone threw a copy of an Aryan newspaper onto the front lawn of an interracial couple living on another nearby street.
Police have assigned an investigator to the latest incident, according to District 2 commander Capt. Ed Sarvis Jr.

California state prisons will end long-standing policies of segregating prisoners solely along racial lines under the terms of a legal settlement announced Monday.
For 25 years, California prisons have segregated the tens of thousands of inmates who arrive each year at the system's reception centers. Prisoners are segregated for at least their initial 60 days in custody. No other state has a similar policy, state officials have conceded.
Under the new policy, race may still be used as a factor in separating prisoners -- a white supremacist, for example, would probably not be housed with a black inmate -- but it will no longer be the primary criterion, state prison officials said.
Instead, prisoners' gang affiliations and individual histories will be scrutinized to determine how best to place them to minimize fighting, they said.
Racial segregation has persisted in California prisons even as it disappeared elsewhere because officials said it was necessary to separate inmate gangs that formed along racial lines, such as the Mexican Mafia and white supremacists.
But the state had little choice except to abandon the practice after losing a decision in the U.S. Supreme Court in February. The justices, in a case brought by a black prisoner from Los Angeles a decade ago, ruled 5 to 3 that the state could segregate prisoners by race only in rare instances.
"We rejected the notion that separate can ever be equal ... 50 years ago in Brown vs. Board of Education, and we refuse to resurrect it," Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote at the time. [can mixed be equal?]
The justices sent the case back to lower courts for further proceedings, and since then lawyers for the state and the black prisoner, Garrison Johnson, have been negotiating a settlement.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will phase out race-based segregation policies over the next two years. The change is expected to gradually bring more racial mixing to the cellblocks and yards of the nation's largest penal system.
"We will start to create an environment where it will be less dangerous in prison for everyone because racism will start to dissipate," said Bert Deixler, an attorney for Johnson.
By integrating prisons, "the power of racial classification and racism will start to die," Deixler said.
"People will come into contact in a more reasonable way with people of a different race and will not feel so threatened or so angry with those people."
In the past, some high-level corrections officials had predicted dangerous results if the segregation policies were discarded. But corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton said Monday that California prisons have already been moving away from simple race-based segregation in favor of policies designed to look more closely at factors that contribute to inmate violence.
Age, physical characteristics and reasons for incarceration are among the factors that prison officials will be considering as they place inmates, according to a corrections department statement. The settlement, Thornton said, also includes a provision to track violent racial incidents to improve understanding of the conditions that lead to them.
Among the 167,000 inmates in California's 33 state prisons, about 29% are white, 28% black, and 37% Latino, Thornton said. Currently, once they leave the initial reception centers, many prisoners live in integrated cells or mix in prison yards, she said, and the prison system uses a number of criteria, including race, to assign placements.
Although the lawsuit dealt with reception center segregation, the settlement will be applied throughout the state's prison system, and eventually all state prison facilities for male and female inmates will follow the new policy that prohibits using race as "the sole determining factor for offender housing assignments," Thornton said.
Under the terms of the agreement, the state will phase out racial segregation in three steps:
In March, after distributing the new policy to prisons and retraining prison staff, current race segregation policies will end in state prison reception centers.
Next year, the ban will extend to so-called sensitive needs yards and minimum support facilities -- dorms that house minimum-custody inmates.
In 2008, plans will be rolled out to bring the new integration policy to the prisons, Deixler said.
Prison officials say that there will be no wholesale movement of prisoners to bring about desegregation. Instead, the mixing of prisoners by race will occur as new inmates enter the system and current ones are transferred, gradually blurring the racial lines within prisons.
Thornton said prison officials are not seeking to meet any particular integration goal. "Prison gangs are aligned along racial lines, and many confrontations among inmates are race-based," she said. But prison officials believe the new policy will bring more careful evaluation of the various factors that lead to prison violence.
In fact, Johnson's lawsuit was a direct challenge to the idea that prisoners were safer if housed with those of their own race, Deixler said.
Prison segregation policies are flawed because a great deal of underworld violence occurs between people of the same race, Deixler argued. Rivalries between the predominantly black Crips and Bloods, for example, claim numerous lives on the street, he said.
Deixler's client was a black man jailed for murder in 1987 who was not a member of any gang, court papers said. Being housed with other black men, most of whom belonged to gangs, left Johnson feeling defenseless -- unable to form alliances with prisoners who, like himself, were unaffiliated with gangs.
"He was a lone wolf who did not have a prospect for having protection," Deixler said. He sought an integrated prison setting because he wanted peers who would back him against the black gang members he found so menacing, he added.
Deixler, an attorney with the law firm Proskauer Rose who handled the case without pay, praised corrections Secretary Roderick Q. Hickman for helping to engineer the settlement.
The corrections department leadership was "engaged and thoughtful," in designing a plan for desegregating prison facilities without compromising safety, he said.
Johnson remains housed with an African American cellmate, Deixler said.
But Deixler added that Johnson has been promised a cellmate of a different race upon his next transfer.

Russian scientist Ilia Ivanov was ordered to breed the mutants. But there was problem in catching living females. After failures in impregnating African women with ape sperms, it was decided to impregnate female gorillas with human sperms.
However, the project failed and Ivanov became one of the casualties of the Stalinist Purge of the 1930s. Ivanov was arrested in 1930 and died in a labour camp in 1932.

The Indian diaspora in America is upset over the manner in which the California education department has permitted known anti-Hindu baiters like Harvard professor Michael Witzel and other usual suspects to intrude in the textbook selection and reform process, in violation of established norms. The result is that while the Curriculum Commission has accepted changes mooted by representatives of the Christian, the Jewish and the Muslim groups, changes desired by Hindu groups are being posted for re-review by Hindu-baiting academics!
According to available information, the California Curriculum Committee was approached in September by concerned Americans on the issue of social studies textbooks being considered for Class VI to VIII. Practitioners of different religious traditions complained that several passages in the textbooks needed editing, as they comprised either negative or incorrect descriptions about the religious beliefs and practices of the Jews, the Muslims, and the Hindus. Some of the content was racist, and had the potential to create xenophobic or sensational images in the minds of adolescent students and negatively impact the self-identity of the Jewish-American, the Hindu-American, and the Muslim-American children.
Thereafter, the Institute for Curriculum Services (ICS) submitted several corrections and suggestions to ensure that sections on Judaism reflected Jewish understanding of the faith and did not fan anti-Semitism. The Council on Islamic Education (CIE) proposed alternative language for certain sections on Islam, and the Hindu Education Foundation (HEF) and the Vedic Foundation (VF) gave inputs on Hindu dharma. The Curriculum Commission and Content Review Panel (CRP) informed the California State Board of Education (SBE), and on November 8, 2005, the ad hoc committee approved 499 out of 684 proposed changes.

California prisons to end race-based policy
CALIFORNIA'S prison system will no longer divide inmates by race, a practice in effect for more than 20 years and intended to limit gang violence, a spokeswoman for the system said on Tuesday.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had routinely segregated inmates by race on their arrival at prison, a practice challenged by a prisoner in a federal discrimination lawsuit.
The department has settled the challenge and has agreed to no longer use race as the sole factor in deciding how to house inmates, said department spokeswoman Terry Thornton.
"Prisons have always been desegregated, but had we made housing decisions based on a person`s race," Thornton said. "It is no secret that many instances of gang violence in prison are racially motivated."
California's prison population of nearly 167,000 is 28 per cent white, 29 per cent black and 37 per cent Hispanic. Its gangs include the Aryan Brotherhood and Mexican Mafia, which recruit inmates based on race, Thornton said.
The prison system's change of practice brings it in line with a February US Supreme Court decision banning racial segregation in prisons with the exception of extraordinary conditions.

Modern Minutemen can't talk their way out of their moniker's past

Remember way back in April when creepy paranoids Jim Gilchrist and Chris Simcox, fabricators of the Minutemen Project, fooled the laziest mainstream media outlets into marketing a couple hundred ignorant, cranky crackers as the vanguard of a bold, new movement of polite vigilantes concerned about immigration issues? In the dominant discourse, the Minutemen's disavowal of racism went unchallenged. Even the impotent Governator, trying to hustle some California far-right brownie points, felt comfortable claiming the Minutemen were doing a "terrific job."
For the most part, only astute monitors of hate groups, anti-racist coalitions and independent journalists identified the glaring similarities between the Minutemen and previous racist vigilantes of the Southwest such as the Klan Border Patrol of the early '80s, whose members bragged to an undercover police infiltrator that they'd beheaded and buried clandestine border crossers. But when the hurricanes blew in, and the 2,000th soldier in Iraq blew up, the Minutemen media blitz blew away.
The Minutemen themselves didn't, however. Gilchrist came in third, running as an independent in the O.C.'s 48th congressional district primary race in October, receiving nearly as many votes as Democratic candidate Marilyn Brewer, and though he lost the Dec. 6 special election, he polled a disturbing 25 percent.Two nights after the loss, a beaming Gilchrist told border-obsessed Lou Dobbs on CNN that he will announce at the end of January his plan to run again.
Meanwhile, he and Simcox have continued to organize and encourage border rallies and expand their ranks to include even more pistol-toting rednecks to sit in lawn chairs, chug Coors Light and courageously point out poverty-stricken job-seekers to the Border Patrol, whose ambivalence toward such "help" is well-documented.
The racists have also begun to branch out to the non-border states, where they spy on folks being hired for jobs they themselves would never do. At this point, the Minutemen have perhaps enough members to fill a section of the bleachers at a rodeo, but they won't release a list of their members, so it's almost as hard to count them as it is to count the men, women and children who've died or disappeared as victims of vigilantes at the border since hate groups began patrolling it in the 1920s.
Back in the day, in order to prevent the growing Mexican/Jewish conspiracy to force white Christian Americans into eating tortillas and bagels instead of Wonderbread, the San Diego chapter of the KKK "began to merge with like-minded organizations such as The Silver Shirts League, The MinuteMen and the White Guards."
You read it right. According to Carlos Larralde and Richard Griswold del Castillo, in their essay on the legacy of our hometown Klan in The Journal of San Diego History, a local, anti-immigrant, racist group identified itself as the Minutemen more than 70 years ago. Turns out our current crop of self-proclaimed defenders of America are by no means the first racists to appropriate the moniker of the young Massachusetts militiamen of the American Revolution -- they're just the first to closet their racism.
How racist were the old-school Minutemen? L. David Russell, who actually criticizes Larralde and del Castillo for a lack of nuance in attacking the KKK, in his Copley Award-winning thesis on the San Diego Klan, agrees with them on at least this point: the Minutemen of the 1930s were a "militaristic, Nazi-inspired [group] dedicated to missions of violence" whose "obvious" similarity to the KKK was "racism." The Minutemen were even worse than the Klan? Wow.
OK, but have any other local, white supremacist, immigrant-hating groups called themselves Minutemen since then? Why, yes, and, as my uncle used to say, reading from the Passover Haggadah, "I'm so touched by your question." Seattle-based independent journalist and author David Niewert in his "Orcinus" blog, describes the 1960s incarnation of the Minutemen as extreme right-wingers who stockpiled weapons for an impending war between the white descendants of Adam and the communists who'd taken over the U.S. government. Their founder, Robert De Pugh, a felon convicted on charges of weapons stockpiling and child sexual molestation, led the Minutemen in terrorist acts, allegedly including schemes to blow up summer camps and put cyanide in air-conditioning ducts at a United Nations building in New York. Their plot to bomb a city hall building in Redmond, Wash., got De Pugh and his Minute-henchmen nabbed by the FBI and sent to prison.
Oh yeah, and they really, really didn't like Jews or people of color. For example, one Minutemen member, neo-Nazi Keith Gilbert, wound up in San Quentin in 1965 for hording 1,500 pounds of dynamite in his Glendale home, with which he planned to assassinate Martin Luther King Jr. Years after his release, in the 1980s, he gained some more notoriety for spitting on a mentally retarded black girl.
Anti-fascist researcher Dave Emory argues that the Minutemen of the '60s were "the most important of America's paramilitary organizations" and a "prototype and direct precursor of the modern militia movement [that] overlapped many domestic fascist organizations, such as the American Nazi Party, the Christian Defense League, Ku Klux Klan and National States Rights Party." That overlap is well-represented by 1960s Minutemen member and local crackpot Tom Metzger, leader of the White Aryan Resistance, former Grand Dragon of the California Klan, and felon convicted in 1990 of inciting skinheads to murder an Ethiopian man in Portland, Ore.
Metzger bemoans today's Minutemen for going "out of their way to claim not to be racist. They are hypocrites of the worst order. They go on and on that they want no racists among them. What a joke." Metzger must be delighted that members of racist groups like the National Alliance show up at Minutemen rallies and fly swastika flags; that Bill Parmley, former Texas Minutemen leader, quit a few months ago and denounced the Minutemen as racists, citing comments made by members in support of shooting and dehydrating border crossers; and that our local Minutemen leader, Oceanside's Jim Chase, admitted that his armed patrolling attracted "rogue" elements, likely responsible for the shootings that wounded two men at the border this summer.
What's in a name? Sometimes a hell of a lot. Simcox and Gilchrist claim that their Minutemen "have no affiliation with, nor accept any assistance by or interference from separatists, racists or supremacy groups or individuals," but that's lip service, public relations, a scam -- and some mainstream media and right-wing politicians have fallen for it. They quote Sam Adams and paste illustrations of American revolutionaries on their website, sidestepping nearly a century of border-patrolling, immigrant-bashing, like-minded, bloodthirsty Nazis calling themselves Minutemen, as if they could start over fresh with the same name?not to mention tactics -- and supposedly expunge it of its racist heritage.
But names gain their meaning in real, not ideal, contexts. Nobody would believe your swastika tattoo represented a lucky Indian sun sign if you were a white, jack-booted, skinhead leader of an Oi! band. Think a Muslim political party could call itself "Al-Qaeda, but not that Al-Qaeda"? It just means "foundation," right? Wrong. It means flying planes into buildings in the same way Minutemen means harassing and attacking people at the border. Names, words, symbols and signs get wrecked. Ignoring their history is disingenuous.
No doubt, if they had contrived a less historically dubious euphemism like "Citizens in Favor of Building a Giant Electric Fence Around the U.S.A.," the vigilantes still would've attracted separatists, racists and supremacy groups because, as we all know, that's who vigilantes are. But that they can so un-problematically call themselves Minutemen proves that these assholes are either closet Nazis or selectively ignorant of U.S. history or, most likely, both.

When the American Civil Liberties Union this week released a new batch of documents obtained from the FBI verifying that the federal agency has been monitoring domestic environmental- and animal-rights groups, it was only the latest evidence of government working on behalf of the anti-environmentalist industry and property-rights advocates to, as one of those advocates put it in 1992, "destroy the environmental movement." It's an effort that's been under way since the 1980s, using various tactics from intimidation to slander. Only recently have the anti-environmentalists hit upon their most promising idea yet: Linking environmentalism to terrorism.

"I had a dream the other night," David Agranoff says, laughing. "I'm not making this up -- I had a dream about eating peanut-braised tofu!" Agranoff wears a tan prison jump suit and blue canvas slip-ons. His eyes are slightly sunken and his skin is sallow, probably because for the past 73 days, he has only been allowed outdoors for an hour a week, and the vegan offerings at San Diego's Metropolitan Correctional Center leave something to be desired. In the course of his first 10 weeks of incarceration, Agranoff has eaten, he estimates, 160 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, "and I'm getting pretty darned sick of them," he says with a smile that might seem bitter if he wasn't having such an obvious good time talking about food.
"...two pieces of bread with Veganaise and two fried bricks of tofu is my favorite thing in the world, and I literally had forgotten what it tastes like. I woke up and thought, "Oh my God, this is crazy -- I'm dreaming about tofu! What the hell is wrong with this picture?"
To answer his question we have to leave this tiny, glass-walled interview room a few well-secured floors above downtown San Diego and travel two and a half years back in time to August of 2003. It was billed as 'Revolution Summer,' though it wasn't meant to be a particularly incendiary affair, just a series of protests and events organized by various local progressive groups. Compassion for Farm Animals, the organization founded by Agranoff and his wife when they moved to California from the Midwest, was in charge of animal-rights week, so they planned a rally in front of a nearby McDonald's and a trip to a dairy farm up in Norco. ("Our big campaign at the time was 'California Cows Are Tortured Cows,'" Agranoff explains.) They also invited Rodney Coronado out from Tucson to give a talk.
Coronado had been a hero of Agranoff's for years. He first made the news in 1986 for using ordinary hand tools to sink two whaling ships docked in Iceland. (Agranoff was 12 years old at the time, and living in Bloomington, Indiana. He had just lost his mother to a stroke and was searching for solace in unlikely places, mainly the novels of Clive Barker and Stephen King.) Coronado went underground for several years, but in the early 1990s he was tied to a series of Animal Liberation Front arson attacks on mink farms and animal-research labs. Four of his associates were jailed for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating the crimes. Coronado was nonetheless convicted in 1995, and was serving a 57-month sentence in a federal penitentiary when he first received a letter from a young David Agranoff, who had been led to veganism and animal-rights activism via the straight-edge punk scene.
After his release in 1999, Coronado became the most visible spokesman for the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front. Earlier this year, an FBI counterterrorism official told a Senate subcommittee that the two groups (if "group" is the right word for a looser than loose network of anonymous individuals united only by shared ideals and a willingness to leave the letters ELF or ALF at the often-smoldering scenes of their actions) together form "one of today's most serious domestic threats" and are "way out in front" of "right-wing extremists, KKK, anti-abortion groups and the like." Agranoff expected an enthusiastic crowd for Coronado's talk.
Coronado flew in from Tucson on the morning of August 1. Several hours before his plane landed, someone set fire to a construction site at University Town Centre, in northern San Diego. A five-story, 206-unit condominium project burned to the ground, causing $50 million in damage. The flames could be seen for miles. "It looked like sunrise," one fireman said at the time. The arsonists left a banner at the scene. "If you build it, we will burn it," it read. "...the E.L.F.s are mad."
That evening, Agranoff brought Coronado to the gay and lesbian community center where the lecture was to take place. About 120 people crowded into the hall, along with a surprising number of reporters. Agranoff was excited by the turnout and, he says, only learned about the morning's arson -- which would turn out to be the largest act of ecosabotage in American history, causing as much financial damage as all previous ELF attacks combined -- when a news crew asked him and Coronado for a comment. Coronado, who claims he had no prior knowledge of the attack, answered that he supported "any action taken to preserve open space... It's become a legitimate response to urban sprawl."
Agranoff -- who says he has no problem with arson as a political tactic, but questions the wisdom of its use in wildfire-prone Southern California -- kept quiet. "I had no idea what had happened," he recalls. "I thought, 'that's weird timing.'"
The authorities thought so too. At the protest Compassion for Farm Animals had planned at McDonald's the next day, 'the police presence was insane,' Agranoff says. After the rally, police followed the activists (Coronado had gone to L.A. immediately after the lecture) to Balboa Park, and stood by while they picnicked on vegan treats. "We were a security threat," Agranoff laughs, "having a picnic." The next morning, when they left for the Norco dairy tour, squad cars trailed behind them. Riverside Sheriff's deputies picked up the tail when they crossed the county line.
"When we got back," Agranoff says, "our house had been broken into and my van was gone. Broad daylight, Sunday afternoon." Oddly, he says, the only thing missing was his computer. His television and stereo were untouched, as was an open jar stuffed full of cash that had been sitting beside the computer.
Agranoff was sleeping when the phone rang early the next morning. It was the police. His van had been found not far from his house. ('the engine was blown, so they only got a couple of blocks.') He got on his bike and rode over. The officer waiting with his van asked him for his ID, and he gave it to him. When the officer asked if he had any tattoos, "I said, 'I don't understand why that's relevant. I'm here to pick up my stolen van,'" Agranoff recalls. "[The officer] said, 'Get down on the ground.' He pulled out his gun. So I got down. And then he said, 'Your name has just come up in a terrorist investigation.' Terrorist? I pass out veggie burgers!" In the end the officer sent him home without his van, which the police impounded for a few days.
About two weeks later, Agranoff, who works as a teacher at a school for autistic children, was at home on summer vacation. A self-described "Asian-action-movie freak," he was watching a Korean action film on DVD at 9 in the morning when someone came knocking. He opened the door and found, he says, "a gun in my face." It was the FBI. They had a search warrant, and "went running through the house with their guns drawn." At that point Agranoff and his wife had six rabbits (they're now down to three: Luna, Lily and Yuen P. Newton, 'the revolutionary rabbit'), and Agranoff was worried for his pets. "...the rabbits started freaking out. I was afraid one of them would jump around and [the agents] would just cock off a round."
No rabbits were harmed. The FBI took videotapes, a video camera and a computer Agranoff had borrowed from a friend. Two weeks later the FBI searched an apartment shared by two other activists, Kathryn Dougherty and Michael Cardenas. They took just one item, Dougherty said at the time: a videotape of Rod Coronado's August 1 lecture.
The next two years were uneventful. Agranoff's group put out a newsletter and posted a Web site listing local vegan resources. They organized a vegan business fair and went to anti-war rallies around the state. In the summer, they handed out samples of tofu ice cream in Balboa Park. In the fall, they passed out plates of Tofurky and mashed potatoes with vegan gravy. It wasn't until this June that two men in suits arrived at the school where Agranoff works and presented him with a subpoena requiring him to testify before a federal grand jury investigating the University Town Centre arson.
But when Agranoff appeared before the grand jury, he says, he was not asked about the fire. Federal prosecutors seemed almost exclusively interested in the speech Rod Coronado had given the following evening, particularly in the Q&A that followed the lecture, during which Coronado showed the audience how he had made the bombs that ultimately landed him in prison. (Legislation sponsored by Senator Dianne Feinstein in 1997 made it a federal crime to share information about 'the making or use of an explosive' with the intent that the information be used to break the law, even if the information shared is readily available from other sources.)
Agranoff refused to answer the prosecutor's questions. A federal investigation of an open public meeting, he said, posed a serious threat to the freedom of speech and assembly. "I will not take part in what I know in my heart is my oppression and harassment," he wrote in a July 28 letter filed with the court. 'they can hold me forever and I will not change my mind." The U.S. Attorney's Office had granted him immunity from prosecution, which meant that he had no recourse to Fifth Amendment protections against self-incrimination. (It also suggests that the prosecutors, who would not comment on the grand-jury investigation, never considered him a suspect of any serious crime.) Judge Irma Gonzalez found him in contempt of court, and ordered that he be imprisoned at the Metropolitan Correction Center until he agreed to cooperate.
So on this sunny fall afternoon, Agranoff sits with his legs crossed in a cramped fluorescent-lit room. He's happy to be out of his cell, and happy for the chance to talk. His incarceration, he speculates, is intended only to send the message "that you don't tell the government, 'No.' That's the only reason I'm here."
In Agranoff's view, the grand jury investigation has little to do with the University Town Centre fire, and more with silencing Rod Coronado. Other activists called before the grand jury were also asked extensively about Coronado's talk, and only very minimally about the arson. (About a dozen were subpoenaed along with Agranoff. Two of them, Danae Kelley and Nicole Fink, were also jailed for refusing to testify.) Ironically, Coronado himself has never denied that he showed the audience how to construct a simple explosive, and is fully expecting to be indicted when the grand jury's term expires at the end of this month.
More broadly, Agranoff says, the grand jury is being used to cast as wide a net as possible over a movement that, however Dr. Dolittle-y its poultry-friendly pronouncements may sometimes sound, is perceived by the government as a serious threat. (At the same time that subpoenas went out in San Diego, another grand jury was convened in San Francisco to investigate the 2003 bombing of an Emeryville biotech firm.) 'the Feds target us more than they do the Aryan Brotherhood and all those people, because those groups just threaten to hurt people. The Animal Liberation Front and the Earth Liberation Front are a threat to capitalism," Agranoff says. "...the industries that turn animals into food are such an entrenched part of our society that the very idea of people who are eloquent, effective ambassadors for animal rights turns us into public enemy No. 1."
For Agranoff, the choice was clear. "Why would I help them tear down the movement I have fought for for 13 years?" he asks. Everybody knows -- I'm sure the prosecutors' mothers know -- that I'm not going to testify. If I'm here 120 days or 365 days, I'm not going to testify."
And despite the food and the daily indignities and deprivations of prison life, it hasn't been that bad. Agranoff has had plenty of time to read -- about three books a week, he says -- and he's written 100 pages of a novel, "probably 15 short stories," and another 10 or 20 pieces of ultra-short flash fiction, not to mention letters to family and friends. Standing up to a grand jury wins you a certain degree of instant respect in prison, and the other inmates have made sure Agranoff has been well taken care of. "they've been very nice," he says. Still, for someone used to spending most of his time among progressive activists, the open racism, homophobia and misogyny that dominate prison life have been hard to take. It all sometimes feels, he says, a bit like the Star Trek episode where Kirk and Co. "end up going to a parallel dimension where everyone's evil and Spock has a beard."
Some things, however, keep it in perspective. The first weekend that he was in jail, his wife and a friend trucked several hundred chickens from an egg farm to a sanctuary for liberated farm animals. The birds had lived past their egg-laying prime and were due to be slaughtered. When his wife told him about the rescue over the prison pay phone, Agranoff felt like crying, he says. "Okay, so I live in a fucking toilet with another guy. I can handle that. I'm not one of those animals suffering on those farms. It could be worse."
Eleven days later, Agranoff's hair is gelled wet into a short, Clark Kent-ish twist. He wears camouflage shorts and a black T-shirt that says, "Vegan Straightedge" in white letters. Some color has returned to his skin. He's just finished a soy-bacon cheeseburger, and he's sitting in the sun in the courtyard of a vegan restaurant. The previous week, on Agranoff's 80th day behind bars, Judge Gonzalez had called him to court and, convinced at last that further incarceration would not coerce him into testifying, ordered his release.
Kelley and Fink have now also been freed, and though Agranoff would much rather be here than back at the correctional center, he is hardly in a celebratory mood. "Yes, the First Amendment won in the end," he says, "but it took two-and-a-half months of my life."
And, of course, everything that Agranoff is fighting still stands -- the vast edifice of animal exploitation and the myriad forms of destruction that flow from it: pollution, desertification, deforestation, global warming, heart disease, mad cow, bird flu, wars for oil. 'there is no wrecking ball against the planet like the meat, dairy and egg industry,? Agranoff says, and rolls off a litany of statistics: "One-third of all resources used for anything in the entire country goes to the production of meat, dairy and eggs"; dairy cows create 20 to 40 times more solid waste than humans; fish carry nine times more pollution in their flesh than can be found in the water around them; it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce a single pound of beef, not to mention many hundreds of gallons of water and entire petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries devoted to the production of fertilizer, hormones and antibiotics. "If the Earth is dying and we're in the noose, one of the biggest things that exists in the fiber in that noose is humankind's relationship with animals."
Agranoff sings the praises of veganism, and when he talks about it, it sounds less like a set of dietary restrictions than a faith complete with conversion narratives. (Agranoff gave up meat as a teen when the guitarist from a straight-edge band confronted him: "'You say you're for freedom, but you have the souls of thousands laying prisoner in your bowels.' It was so cheesy," Agranoff laughs, "but it hit me.") It has realms of esoteric knowledge, tight communal bonds, obligations to proselytize, opportunities for martyrdom, and, of course, a complete vision of the apocalypse, if not of any subsequent redemption. More than that, though, Agranoff's worldview resembles the metaphysical outlook of the sci-fi and horror novels he's loved since he was a kid. It's a Lovecraftian vision of a damned world in which a thin crust of rational coherence tenuously conceals a hideous, oozing chaos of violence, suffering and doom.
"Underneath all this," he says, waving his hand to indicate not just the plastic tables and sun umbrellas around us, but the entire city behind them and the world that yawns beyond it, "there's a lot of forces that people don't witness on the surface. But when you become a vegan and an activist and you're trying to change things, you open your eyes a lot. You see the mechanics behind it and it becomes impossible not to want to fight," he laughs, "to tear it all down."

Xackery Irving's documentary "American Chain Gang" focuses on a pair of modern day correctional facilities that use an old-fashioned approach to punishing prisoners. In Alabama, male prisoners do field work wearing leg manacles (albeit not connected to each other). In Arizona, a publicity hog sheriff puts female inmates on the first all-woman chain gang and parades them about for media consumption.
Nobody is fooled by the idea of the chain gang as a crime deterrent. Prison guards acknowledge the set-up is being done to satisfy a public that is frustrated by rising crime. Inmates question how they are going to be rehabilitated for their eventual return to society by being treated like animals. Civil libertarians chime in that no civilized democracy resorts to this type of penology stunt.
"American Chain Gang" is grimly depressing, not only in showing how the chain gang concept is a blatant failure, but also by presenting some of the dumbest people ever put on camera. Both sides of the law seem to share a lack of brain cells - whether it is an inmate advocating the Aryan Nation cause or a correctional officer who enjoys watching the chained prisoners because it is (in his estimation) a new adventure every day. Needless to say, the people in this film will never be found guilty of stealing subscriptions to The New Republic or National Review.

(AP) The leader of Egypt's main Islamic opposition group said Thursday the Holocaust was a "myth," and he slammed Western governments for criticizing disclaimers of the Jewish genocide.
The comments by Muslim Brotherhood chief Mohammed Mahdi Akef _ made on the heels of his group's strong showing in Egyptian parliamentary elections _ echoed remarks made recently by Iran's hard-line president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which sparked international outrage.
"Western democracies have slammed all those who don't see eye to eye with the Zionists regarding the myth of the Holocaust," Akef wrote in a weekly article meant as a directive to the group's followers on its official Web site.
Akef's hard-line rhetoric was in contrast to the moderate tone the Brotherhood took in November and December parliamentary elections, during which it played down its calls for implementing Shariah, or Islamic law, in Egypt and instead touted itself as a pro-democracy movement.
The outlawed Brotherhood surprised many with its election showing, winning 88 seats in the legislature _ about 20 percent of the body _ and establishing itself as the top opposition bloc.
In his article, Akef lashed out at the United States and other Western powers for what he described as a campaign against Islam.
"These words are meant to expose the false American rule which has become a nightmare of a new world order," Akef said.
"I am making these comments to all free people in the world, aiming to wake up the conscience in humanity. The sword of democracy is only unsheathed against those who raise the flag of Islam."
Similar comments by Ahmadinejad earlier this month sparked an international outcry. The Iranian president called the Holocaust _ in which an estimated 6 million Jews were killed _ a "myth" and said Europeans have used it to create a Jewish state in the heart of the Islamic world.
He also said Israel should be "wiped off the map."
Arab governments and media did not condemn Ahmadinejad's remarks.
It was not clear why Akef made the remarks, but his article was full of criticism of Western democracy, which he said "was drawn up by the sons of Zion."
Akef did not take a question about his statement when telephoned by The Associated Press.
But a top Brotherhood leader said the group is disenchanted by the U.S. policies in the Mideast, including President Bush's reform plans for the region.
"In fact, the Americans appeared to be hypocrites about the issue of reform," Essam el-Aryan said. "They maintain silence when the (election's) results were not favorable to them."
In an interview with the AP last month, Akef promised that the group will not use its new leverage in the parliament to try to change Egypt's foreign policy, including its 1979 peace treaty with Israel. He said the group will not push for a fight with Israel.
His remarks seemed to be designed to allay Western concerns about the organization's newfound strength.
Following the elections, Akef promised that Brotherhood parliamentarians would represent all Egyptians _ Muslims, Coptic Christians, men and women _ in an attempt to calm widespread fear of the group among Christians, women and secularists.
But in his Thursday article, Akef said the group will press to implement "the correct teachings of Islam."
"You Brothers, you are the guardians of Shariah. Your main concern should be the heritage of Shariah, which you uphold," he wrote.
The Brotherhood calls for implementing Islamic law but is vague about what that means. Many skeptics accuse it of using a moderate tone in public while backing hard-line stances in private that it will implement if it takes power through elections.
Others contend its more radical statements are an attempt to play to Egyptians who resent what they see as the United States' bias toward Israel.
The Brotherhood, Egypt's oldest Islamist group and the biggest opposition bloc, was outlawed in 1954, but it fielded 150 candidates who ran as independents to get around the ban. The organization claims it could have won an additional 30 seats were it not for violent intervention by security forces.

NEW ORLEANS (CNN) -- Two New Orleans police officers were fired Wednesday for their roles in the videotaped beating of a 64-year-old man being arrested in the French Quarter, a police spokesman said.
The altercation in October has led to a federal civil rights investigation and criminal charges being filed against three police officers.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley initially suspended the two officers -- Robert Evangelist and Lance Shilling -- without pay after a number of law enforcement officials were seen on videotape striking Robert Davis during an arrest, Capt. Juan Quintone said.
A third officer, Stuart Smith, also was suspended without pay for 120 days for his role. All three officers are white. Davis, a retired teacher, is black.

I was introduced to Friedrich von Hayek through reading Thomas Sowell. And I decided to read this book because it was a highly recommended read in the Freedom's Nest Website Reading List.
As soon as I started reading this book, I developed a warm feeling toward the author. In his original introduction, Hayek started with: "When a professional student of social affairs writes a political book, his first duty is plainly to say so. This is a political book...." His candor and his confidence were so befitting with his great intellect.
Noting that Hayek was an Austrian, I was impressed by his mastery of the English language and I enjoyed his writing style. With mild language and in simple terms, Hayek made very sweeping predictions and patiently explained his reasoning with convincing arguments based on economic and human behavioral theories.
Hayek's thesis was that central economic planning will inevitably lead to governmental control of every facet of its citizen's life, and hence toward a totalitarian state. Hayek's other insightful observations: Nazism, Fascism and communism all have the same roots. In a totalitarian state, it is always the ruthless and the unsophisticated who ascend to the top. Extensive governmental control harms the society not just in delivering dismal economic results, but, more seriously, it produces a psychological change, an alteration in the character of the people.
One must not forget that when Hayek wrote this book, his was very much a voice in the wilderness; he was ridiculed and denounced by his contemporaries. But his ideas stood the test of time! And blessedly, he lived to see that - to see first the building and eventually the fall of the Berlin Wall.
This little book was said to have had definitive influence on such giants as Churchill, Thatcher, Reagan and many others. Perhaps the book's influence was best attested to by its being banned in the USSR, China and many other totalitarian countries.
This book belongs on your book shelf.

"The Road to Serfdom" is a classic for many reasons, but the chief among them is that nothing else so clearly and completely shows the degeneration of liberty inherent in the handing of arbitrary power to a bureaucracy.
Hayek wrote "The Road to Serfdom" in Britain in 1944. He wanted to examine Soviet Russia in comparison to wartime Britain; however, British authorities prohibited that approach due to the alliance of the time; and therefore, Hayek instead compared to Britain none other than National Socialist (i.e., Nazi) Germany. Nothing is lost -- and at the time, at least, much was gained -- in the trade.
The comparison, of course, is between a totalitarian socialist state and a democratic socialist state. Hayek shows that the only difference is the degree of benevolence of those leading the two countries; he also shows that, once arbitrary power is handed over, it usually cannot be regained.
No review can do "The Road to Serfdom" adequate justice. On the other hand, since the book is quite short, and since it is one of those books about which it can be right said that if you haven't read it you are not educated, I say just go and read it for yourself. You too will see what millions already have.

This is Hayek's classic meditation on economics, politics, and philosophy. The main point can be summarized very simply: It's not possible to have the government plan the economy without having the government get involved in all other aspects of human existence. As a result it's best wherever possible to avoid centralized economic planning in favor of a model based on competition. It's obvious now that he was right, but back in 1944 when the book was written, this idea had fallen out of favor with most contemporary thinkers. Thus the book is important and prescient, not to mention well-written.
Many people love or hate this book because they see it as being applicable to economic debates of the present day. I didn't really get that sense -- unlike Milton Friedman, Hayek doesn't spend a lot of time talking about specific areas where competition trumps planning. His approach is much broader and more philosophical, highlighting basic tendencies with reference to recent human history (the Nazi regime in particular).
In fact, it's really not clear how relevant the work is to today's problems. Nowadays talk of socialism and fascism is relegated to the far margins in the U.S. and in most of Europe. Particularly in the U.S. economic debates are about how much to cut taxes and deregulate, as Hayek would presumably have hoped. On the other hand, the two biggest economic problems we currently face today are health care and retirement. Some of Hayek's descendents have long argued that the competitive model can solve these problems, but in the case of health care it's been a disaster, and in the case of retirement the non-competitive model has worked well for many years. Another point of contention is Hayek's claim that science can only succeed through competitive economics. This has turned out to be false, as most of the greatest discoveries of the 20th century (big bang, computer, internet, laser, satellite, microwave, etc.) have come from government labs or government-sanctioned monopolies like Bell Labs.
These are minor criticisms, meant only to suggest that the book has at times inspired some extreme ideology. Otherwise it's highly recommended as an enjoyable and informative classic.

Alan Stang: Prodigal Son to Truth
In an article entitled "DON'T EVEN THINK IT! SIEG HEIL!" (http://www.etherzone.com/2005/stang120705.shtml), former Bircher and crusading 'conspiracy theorist' Alan Stang makes a useful defense of free speech in the context of the recent rash of arrests of dissenters from the Orthodox Jewish Version of the Holocaust. I am always happy to see free speech defended, and I am especially happy to see it defended in the case of Holocaust dissenters, who seem to receive no end of abuse from all quarters in the present day.
But if I am glad to see Stang defend free speech, I find his approach to this defense naive. To explain, Stang correctly points out that the stamping out of free speech is an important part of the effort to erect a world government and New World Order whose intent is to place all political power in the hands of a tiny governing elite. But what Stang misses in his observation is that the material questioned by the Holocaust dissenters is central both to the power of the New World Orderlies and to their emotional makeup. This is because the core of the NWO elite is comprised of Jews, and the Holocaust is the mythology that has put billions of guilt-money dollars into their hands -- dollars which they have used to implement the very conspiracy to which Stang so vociferously objects.
Now if we are to understand Stang's behavior, we might suppose that he, like so many others, is in the grip of the worldwide taboo of speaking of Jews in any way except positively. But the problem is more serious than that, because Stang, as a former Bircher commando, was directly forbidden to make any connection between Jews and his beloved (if quite real) Conspiracy -- a fact which is unsurprising in view of Revilo Oliver's published revelations (see the Net Losses section of my website, www.thebirdman.org) that the chief Bircher, Robert Welsh, was controlled by Jews. This, we might add, is not so great a surprise if one realizes that a favorite tactic of the Conspiracy is to control the opposition by infiltrating it and putting its members in key positions so as to insure not only that it will -- as the Birchers -- do nothing substantive, but that it will draw off contributions from opposition supporters which can then be used to fund the Conspiracy itself.
Stang has written some good things, and I am not attempting to paint him as an evil person. But from his essay I would judge that he reacts like so many others to the Jewish Question: Pavlovian conditioning by the Jewsmedia, with its constant harping on 'racism', 'hate' and -- of course -- 'antisemitism', along with daily images and references to the 'horrors' of the Holocaust -- has made it quite impossible to listen openmindedly to any suggestion that the Jews -- or at least the Jewish establishment -- are anything other than angels in terrestrial garb, and that the Holocaust story is something other than what it in fact is, namely, the Jewish Big Lie.

Postscript: Alan Stang has a website at http://www.alanstang.com . His primary document on that site is entitled "As I See It: A Brief Memoir" in which he tells the story of his long association with the John Birch Society. Acording to Stang's account, he was an intimate of founder Robert Welsh to such an extent that 'he knew what Welsh thought', and his admiration of Welsh is reflected in comments thruout his essay. In contrast, Stang's opinion of current JBS management is exactly the opposite: In his view, the Society is now going down the tubes because of the top guns in the national office, who are apparently subverting the organization that Welsh built, or at least are using it primarily to line their pockets. Needless to say, there is not the least hint that this could be a Jewish problem, and certainly no hint that Welsh himself was anything other than Jeezez. And interestingly, there is not a mention of Revilo Oliver, who was a Board member and regular contributor to the Society's magazine American Opinion -- interesting, because the meat of Stang's essay is to cite objections to the JBS management by the many people who wished to voice such objections, and Oliver was one such person. But of course the difference between Oliver and the people Stang cites is that Oliver objected to Jew-tool Jeezez himself -- ie, Welsh -- while the people Stang cites merely object to the post-Welsh management. Reminds me of the old saying, "There's none so blind as those who will not see."

As a professional cynic, I am not the type of person who has warm holiday stories for the Christmas season. But this year, Providence intervened. Gather 'round, kiddies, and hear the true tale of the beer that saved Thanksgiving.
Every year, my wife and I give a Thanksgiving feast for family and friends. This year, two days before the event, we noticed a small pool of water in our basement, beneath the furnace. We called our friend Mark the Contractor, whom we call every time something goes wrong in our house. This is because I was born into the Jewish culture, and for all our many fine qualities, Jewish men are not known for the ability to fix things (with the exception of Arnold Rothstein, who fixed the 1919 World Series).
When I told Mark that there seemed to be a leak from the furnace, he gave me a certain look we Jewish guys are pretty familiar with by now. Apparently, "a leak from the furnace" is about as likely as a blown fuse in the toilet. Who knew?
Mark patiently explained that what we had was the opposite of a leak. The water seemed to be bubbling up from beneath the house. When I asked him to guess the source of the water, he reached his hand into the puddle and extracted something delicate and diaphanous. It resembled an embroidered 17th-century French doily but turned out to be toilet paper, at which point Mark immediately went to wash his hands, both of the water and the problem. We needed a plumber, he said, and departed rather quickly, I thought.
Enter Steve the Plumber, who diagnosed the problem as a blockage in the main sewage line from our house. He tried to snake it out without success, encountering mud. This, he said, was bad news. The main line out of the house seemed to be broken.
OK, I said, cheerfully. Fix it!
Steve, who, like Mark, is not Jewish, found this hilarious. He said that, in all probability, our front yard would need to be dug up by a backhoe in a procedure that could take many days and cost many thousands of dollars. In the meantime, he explained, we could not run any water or flush any toilets.
"B-but I have to cook for 15 people!" my wife said.
"W-we can't poop?" I said.
"If I can't shower, I am definitely going to lose my job," my wife said.
"W-we can't poop?" I said.
(It is a measure of the gravity of the moment that the "thousands of dollars" part hadn't even registered.)
At this point, my wife and I sort of collapsed against each other, slack-jawed. Steve's eyes filled with pity and empathy. Here we were, three ordinary people at the bottom of a stairwell in the heart of the capital of a great nation, on a pebble adrift in the cosmos, staring hell in the face, as a somewhat unpleasant aroma began to permeate the house. In a moment like that, you either lose your humanity, or you find it.
"Steve," I said resignedly, "would you like a beer?"
This seemed to surprise and delight him. He said, sure. As we sat there wordlessly, drained and defeated, our Thanksgiving in shambles, our plumbing -- both mechanical and personal -- in peril, Steve took a long, deep slug. Then he bolted upright.
"I refuse to give up!" he bellowed. There was a chance -- a slim chance, he said -- that pure, brute force and a biblical-size deluge could blast open a new route to the city sewer line. It was crazy, but it might work.
Steve strode to the foul hole in the ground and commanded me to turn on both spigots in the sink, run the shower and activate the toilet, again and again, flushing like the wind! Over the hole he stood like a human colossus, and, with an ordinary plumber's helper, began to plunge that drain for all he was worth. I flushed and Steve pumped, his body a machine, a piston, becoming a modern-day John Henry, a stool-drivin' man. Soon, there came a huge sucking sound, like a rhino dropped from a helicopter, swallowed by a swamp.
And this house was clean.
"This is the greatest moment of my life!" I yelled. Then I added, because my wife was still in the vicinity, "... except of course for the birth of my children."

In the push for diversity in television -- the campaign to add people of color to key positions on both sides of the camera -- it's not the beauty of the rainbow that ultimately brings the big networks around.
It's the promise of a pot of gold.
There are many explanations why ABC, for example, has Hispanics in so many prominent roles in so many of its series of late, from Eva Longoria's Gabrielle on "Desperate Housewives" and Jorge Garcia's Hurley on "Lost" to Sofia Vergara's Lola on "Hot Properties" and Freddie Prinze Jr.'s title character on "Freddie."
Not the least of those reasons, however, is that dinero talks.
"The genesis is good business," said Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment. "We're a broadcast network, and you look at the multicultural nature of this country these days and I think you would be making a big mistake as a broadcaster to not recognize that and program for it."
With the fight for viewers ever more competitive, thanks to the growing number of entertainment options, ABC has identified U.S. Hispanics, a population more than 40 million strong, as a target of opportunity, even if almost half their number watch mainly Spanish-language TV.
For one thing, it's a growing group.
Going into this fall season, Nielsen Media Research determined that while the number of U.S. television households increased 0.5 percent from a year ago, to 110.2 million, the number of Latino TV homes rose 2.9 percent, to 11.23 million. They're closing the minority gap with African-American homes (up 0.8 percent, to 13.2 million) and ahead of Asian homes (up 3.2 percent, to 4.22 million).
"This is now a business proposition," said Alex Nogales, who heads the National Hispanic Media Council. "Latinos are now 14 percent of the U.S. population. That's a lot of soap that we buy. We're like the last frontier, the last group that's been marketed to, so everybody wants a piece of the action."
This has fueled a run on Hispanic talent in a bid to better reflect the world that would-be viewers actually live in. Or the world in which they wished they lived.
That's part of why Jimmy Smits is a would-be presidential successor to Martin Sheen on NBC's "The West Wing," and why Benjamin Bratt stars on the Pentagon series "E-Ring." It's also part of why Fox's "24" has Carlos Bernard and "That '70s Show" has Wilmer Valderrama.
CBS, meanwhile, this season has added Cote de Pablo to "NCIS," while Roselyn Sanchez joins Enrique Murciano on "Without a Trace" and Eva LaRue joins Adam Rodriguez on "CSI: Miami." Then there's Charlie Sheen on "Two and a Half Men."
Beyond giving better roles to Latin performers and airing a pair of sitcoms centering on Hispanic families -- "George Lopez" and "Freddie," which has one character who speaks only Spanish -- ABC this fall became the first English-language broadcast network to make its entire regular prime-time lineup available in Spanish through secondary audio program dubbing and closed caption subtitles.
Fox is said to enjoy an advantage of more than 80,000 Hispanic viewers over ABC overall, but ABC is tightening the race and doing particularly well with Hispanics between the ages of 18 and 49. Among that advertiser-coveted demographic, ABC has the top six shows this season.
What's most striking about much of its diversity is that a good deal of it isn't that striking at all, unless and until one makes a point to sit up and take notice.
Why shouldn't an ensemble hospital drama such as "Grey's Anatomy," which boasts broadcast network TV's first African-American female prime-time showrunner in creator Shonda Rhimes, showcase people from a variety of backgrounds?
Why wouldn't there be a Hispanic couple on upscale Wisteria Lane in "Desperate Housewives"?
The series "Invasion" is set in south Florida, so naturally top billing would go to an actor of Cuban descent, Eddie Cibrian.
Travelers, almost by definition, come from various places, hence the diversity of "Lost."
And so on.
"You look at these big casts and all these diverse characters, and what it allows is access points for so many different people," said McPherson, who recently became the first recipient of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Televisionary Award for his diversity efforts. "If you go to any school now, go to the mall, go to the movies, you look around. This is a multicultural country. It's certainly reflected in our music, and it's only natural that it would be reflected in our broadcast television.
"Unfortunately, that agenda has been so forced in the past that you would have a show that has all white faces and you would say, 'Oh, boy, we should really have the token character in there to have some diversity.' With shows like 'Lost' and 'Desperate' and 'Grey's,' all of a sudden there were casts that organically made sense."

Having read emotional letters from Jewish writers in the press, I feel
compelled to comment myself.
I am acquainted with military history and have read substantially on the
subject. One Jewish writer stated that he was not even alive at the
time of the Second World War. As another writer stated, there are always two
sides to the coin. Well, I was not alive at that time either, so it follows
that the only source of information available to the post-war
generations is history as it was written down for us.
History has not and never will be recorded objectively, as every historian
writes according to his own subjective view and in his own book will try to
prove his own thesis. The mass-murder of six million Jews, however, is a myth.
This is admitted and proved primarily by British and American authors, and
while withholding my own views, here is some information to consider:
According to evidence led in a paper entitled "The Third Reich", three to four
million Jews were murdered in Auschwitz alone. This is mathematically
impossible. Auschwitz was in operation for four years. Let's assume only
three million people were killed here -- in one year, that would be 750,000 or
62,500 a month -- or 2,083 a day!
According to the German Christian Democratic delegate, Eric Blumenfeld of
Hamburg, who was incarcerated at Auschwitz, killings only took place at night,
for reasons of secrecy -- a period of 12 hours. Thus, 2,082 people should have
been killed every 12 hours out of 24 for 1,460 days (four years).
Assuming the corpses were buried, and seeing that sand is four tenths heavier
than the human body (proportionately), at an average of 50 kilograms per body,
70 kilograms of sand would be displaced per corpse [a kilogram is equal to 2.2
pounds for practical purposes]. At 2,083 bodies a day, with a corpse mass of
104.2 metric tons, this would be 145.8 metric tons of soil to be removed daily!
In four years, assuming there were "only" 3 million bodies buried, this would
leave 212,868 metric tons of soil piled up somewhere. Where is it? There is
also the argument that the bodies were burned (also a mathematical
impossibility). The calculations are based on figures and evidence from the
ultra-modern and efficient crematorium at Dortmund in Germany. To burn one
corpse completely requires 31? kilograms of coal. The 2,083 people allegedly
killed in Auschwitz daily would have required more than 65 metric tons of coal,
which was extremely valuable to the war effort -- each day. For Germany, this
was impossible.
Burning the bodies was impossible for another reason. In the most modern
crematoriums today, one body requires about 2? hours to be completely cremated.
Even if Auschwitz had had 100 burning chambers, the 3 million corpses would
have taken 15 years to cremate, burning only in the 12-hour period each day.
Each body produces on average 2 kilograms of ash. Three million corpses would
create 6,000 metric tons of ash. This ash, all 6,000 metric tons of it would
make quite a heap. Where were all these ash-heaps after the war?
In closing, I would like to add that all recorded history is on paper and on
paper you can write anything, even that 6 million Jews were killed. Paper is
patient!

BLACKBURN SOCIAL 18th December 2005
Heritage and Destiny hosted the last planned activity of the year with a great Yuletide social in Blackburn on Sunday 18th December. Around fifty White Nationalists gathered in a local Blackburn Pub for the afternoon get together. Members of the BPP, BNP, Wolf's Hook Brotherhood and the NF tucked into a superb buffet and listened to the all-White music of the all-White DJ. Two stalls provided a wide selection of literature - one by H&D and one by the BPP.
Both stalls did a great trade. From the BPP angle, a lot of Vanguards and Imperiums were sold as well as badges and support merchandise. Many application forms for membership were taken too.
Considering that it is Christmas week it was a respectable turn out. The (now!) traditional Yuletide Quiz was hosted by Eddy Morrison, National Organiser of the BPP and was won by the Wolf's Hook team who scored nineteen points from the 25 questions. They got a team prize of a DVD trilogy of John Tyndall's speeches in New Orleans in 2004.
The quiz was followed by an Auction for BPP funds and some classic items went up for grabs raising a good amount towards BPP funds.
A grand raffle with stacks of prizes rounded off the afternoon and with expressions of Yuletide greetings all around, the atmosphere was relaxed and showed once again how British Nationalist can achieve unity of sense and purpose.
Many thanks from the BPP to Mark and his team from Heritage and Destiny for a great afternoon.
There was one sad note. Many recalled that one year ago at the same venue, our Leader, John Tyndall was present and took part in the event. He was arrested following that event by the Race Police who had been monitoring it. Subsequently he was charged under the dreadful and anti-White Race Acts. John died in July this year and he was sorely missed by all at the social, just as he is sorely missed in the greater fight throughout the Nationalist Movement in Great Britain.
MI5 and London Bombers Revisited - the circle narrows

As if guided by Imperium Magazine's recent call for an honest accounting by MI5 and MI6 of what those agencies knew about the London bombers before the July 2005 terrorist outrages, the Independent newspaper has this weekend revealed that Leeds-born Shahzad Tanweer, the Aldgate bomber, is believed also to have been under investigation by MI5 in 2004.
Tanweer, wrote Independent Crime Correspondent, Jason Bennetto, 'is believed to have been indirectly linked to an alleged plot to build a bomb in 2004' but was placed under only 'routine' assessment by MI5. Like his fellow Leeds Muslim and Jihadist agitator Mohammed Sidique Khan (the Edgeware Road bomber), he was written off as being a peripheral figure due to being linked only through an associate of the 'main gang'.
Scotland Yard's Anti-Terror apparently refused to discuss the Independent's allegations so the British public remains none the wiser both as to what MI5 and MI6 actually knew about the London bombers before the July 2005 blasts and why, if more damning intelligence was held about the bombers' Al Quaeda links before the blasts, that intelligence was not acted upon. If, as the global Press and Media has long argued, MI5 and MI6 really were caught unawares by the July outrages then the public has the right to know this.
As the BPP, in Imperium Magazine No.8, reminded MI5 and MI6, the UK Security Services are yet fully to explain why Mohammed Sidique Khan was, in 2004, investigated but written off as being only a peripheral figure. Is it true that Khan was, indeed, a peripheral figure or was Khan's writing off due to the then chronic shortage of officers and resources which, as Intelligence insiders have often complained to journalists, have long prevented the monitoring of individuals who, Anti-Terror teams believe, merit closer surveillance? Was the writing off of Tanweer also linked to a shortage of resources?
BBC2 recently asked MI5 WHY, in London in 2004, Mohammed Sidique Khan and three other, so far unidentified, men met with a known Al Quaeda operative? Who were the other three men and who was the Al Quaeda operative? Peripheral or not, WHAT was Khan's interest in these men and what does MI5 know about that interest?
Following the Independent's latest revelations, we ask can the men described in the BBC2 investigation now be linked to the MI5 assessments of Mohammed Sidique Khan and Shazhad Tanweer?
BBC2 seemed to have some idea as to the above Al Quaeda man's identity but, for unexplained legal reasons, felt unable, to identify him. In Imperium No.8, in a War on Terror and Crime Special article, this writer echoed the BBC's caution but went one step further by drawing readers' attention to a Newsline column website article found by this writer and written by Internet journalist and Jihad-Watcher Massoud Ansari. In that article, Ansari openly links Mohammed Sidique Khan to an Al Quaeda explosives expert wanted for questioning by the Pakistani and US authorities.
Named by Ansari as Mohammed Yasin, alias Ustad ('the teacher') Osama, the Al Quaeda professional is an expert in the manufacture of home-made bombs used by Jihad terrorists (NB: in the recent Imperium article, this writer accidentally referred to the London bombers' rucksacks as 'vests'; there was also an unintended textual omission relating to Ansari's website). Yasin is said to be on a Pakistani government Most Wanted list for his strongly suspected role in preparing explosives used in the bombings of the US Consulate and the Sheraton Hotel in Karachi and for his alleged masterminding of a failed assassination attempt on the life of Pakistani President, General Pervez Musharraf.
Yasin has been identified as a specialist operative of the Harkat-e-Jihad-e-Islam terrorist group and is a veteran of terrorist training camps along the remote Afghan-Pakistan frontier. In his 30's, he is easily recognisable due to having lost two fingers as the result of his explosives work.
Said to have prepared British Muslims to fight in Bosnia and Afghanistan, Yasin is also believed by Ansari's sources to have trained Khan in the use and manufacture of explosives. So, bearing in mind that Tanweer separately received arms and explosives' training in Pakistan, at a Harkat - ul - Mujahedeen terror camp near Kashmir, could Yasin have been the mystery, London-based, controller who acted as Khan's link to Al Quaeda?
Imperium has no way of verifying or disproving Ansari's claims but they make compelling reading. If true, they make a mockery of MI5's claims, or perhaps their genuine belief based upon contemporary available evidence and professional judgment based upon that intelligence, that Khan was merely a peripheral figure on the pre-2005 Al Quaeda UK circuit.
At the very least, MI5 and MI6 should be delegating officers to the task of pursuing Ansouri's allegations. If Khan - perhaps even Tanweer and other members of the July bombing team - did meet with Yasin, if the latter did train Khan and act as Khan's main Al Quaeda contact in Pakistan and / or the UK, then there are many more questions which need to be answered by the Security Services..not the least of which is: 'WAS Yasin the un-named Al Quaeda operative whom MI5 in 2004 filmed meeting Khan and the three other un-named men in London?'
Also, our reminder that Khan and Tanweer both, and separately, received explosives training should surely make others ask why there has been such an emphasis upon Khan as the supposedly key explosives figure of the group? Just what do the Security Services know about Khan's explosives training that would justify this emphasis? Could the operation have taken place without him? Could Tanweer, in a crisis, have overseen the entire process and ensured the stability of the explosives during their manufacture and their transportation to London?
One also has to wonder how the Independent secured its 'scoop' information about MI5's 2004 monitoring and / or assessment only of Shazhad Tanweer?
Granted, it is not very complimentary about MI5's operational abilities in 2004 but such information has to have come from the heart of the UK Intelligence Community, perhaps from within the core of and with the tacit knowledge of MI5's Anti-Terror directorate. It is so sensitive that its usage and access to it would routinely be extremely limited. Who leaked it and why? Did the Independent approach those sources with a lead to pursue and, in process, 'scoop' the Tanweer revelation or did its sources release the information unprompted and working a nod-and-a-wink official agenda?
As a recent UK court case has reminded us, civil servants and Intelligence professionals leaking War on Terror information can expect little mercy from the judiciary. Whoever leaked the Tanweer information to the Independent newspaper must therefore have done so resigned to the prospect of severe punishment or safe in the knowledge that his or her superiors would not take such action.
We are therefore entitled to ask why anyone in the middle or senior management levels of MI5 would wish such information to be leaked? As mere civilians, we have no smart answers.
Perhaps someone in MI5 has a personal grudge about the agency's perceived and actual sloppiness in handling the 2004 investigations of Khan and Tanweer? Perhaps that person, like 'Deep Throat' in the Watergate Affair, knows more than he or she can safely reveal but has offered the latest information as a means of embarrassing MI5 into revealing more? For example, might MI5 be protecting an agent or informant still in place and be using the 'peripheral' argument to prevent outsiders digging further? Could the leaks be politically motivated, an effort by MI5 right-wingers to embarrass Marxist New Labour?
After all is said and done, might MI5 simply just have made a pig's ear of its 2004 investigations into those around Khan and Tanweer? Might these leaks be the agency's way of conceding that reality and of putting added pressure on Marxist New Labour and on Parliament as a whole to speed up the provision of new MI5 resources, including the training and employment of 500-1000 new MI5 officers - thus expanding the agency's numbers to 3,000 - and the wider provision of the Met's requested 1,500 new Anti-Terror officers?
Whatever the truth of it all, the British public has a right to know the reality behind the spin.
MI5 may well have, in recent months, prevented three terrorist outrages on UK soil but Sir Ian Blair, the media-friendly new Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police has earned some praise and credit for his honesty in admitting that the new resources have come too late to prevent what he and others believe will be a successful bombing outrage sometime over coming months.
Meantime, reports the Independent, the recent upsurge in publicly provided information and other intelligence has overwhelmed MI5 desk officers charged with assessing such information.
This article cannot be concluded without a warning about how Left-Liberal government over many decades past has steadily reduced our Security Services and frontline Police forces to a Beggar man condition in which vital units and departments are force to scrabble for, excuse the pun, coppers tossed in the dust by Treasury-emasculated and blinkered Ministers.
We also repeat yet again, and will continue to repeat, the warnings of Enoch Powell and our late Leader John Tyndall.
Both great orators loudly condemned, as do we, the multi-racialism and unbridled immigration policies which have been the hallmark of Labour and Marxist New Labour in power.
The BPP believes that these policies have created in the spreading Muslim ghettos of our towns and cities an environment so alien to traditional British values that terrorists like Khan, Tanweer, Hussain and Lindsay, and others of their ilk, were and are able to move around with confidence as they prepared and prepare their atrocities and plot the rise of their global, fundamentalist Islamic empire.
In the case of Khan et al, that confidence gave them freedom to organise what locals in Beeston, here in Leeds, told the Independent's North of England Correspondent, Ian Herbert, was 'the Mullah Crew' and to brainwash young Muslim youth and renegade white converts in 'the Al Quaeda gym' and the nearby Iqra bookshop. Eventually, it enabled them to carry out their bloody slaughter of innocents in the heart of the British capital.
Living as we do in Leeds, this writer, BPP National Organiser Eddy Morrison and BPP National Secretary Kevin Watmough are understandably concerned about all matters pertaining to the Security Services' failure before the July bombings to detect the Leeds cell and their comrade-in-terror Jermaine Lindsay. We are also, naturally, worried about the location of the expected follow-up bombing. Has Al-Quaeda chosen Leeds as the next target, perhaps as a retaliatory act in response to the UK-wide and global crackdown imposed by War on Terror agencies in the wake of the London bombings? Or perhaps as a punishment on the city's mainstream Muslim community for publicly condemning Osama bin Laden and his Legions of Death?
While we support the Independent and other paper in their call for a Public Inquiry into the operations of the pre-July 2005 Anti-Terrorist regime in London and into the alleged pre-bombings Intelligence failures of MI5 and MI6, we also recognise that MI5 and MI6 continue to stand at the forefront of professional excellence in many areas of homeland protection work. Wherever the next UK target may be, however, a single death or maimed civilian at the hands of yet another undetected Al Quaeda terror cell is one death and maiming too many. If MI5 has any credible intelligence which will justify a pre-emptive taking out of a copy-cat Al Quaeda bombing cell then we trust and hope that such action is taken. The price of failing to take such action will be more than just MI5's embarrassment.
Asked for his own assessment of the prospects of renewed Al Quaeda terror outrages in Britain and of his officers' ability to prevent such outrages, Sir Ian replied with a short but damning comment upon which, we are sure, he, Enoch Powell and John Tyndall would have been in full agreement.
'The sky', said Sir Ian 'is dark'.

Museum makes modifications to site plan - Morton Grove Champion [12-15-05]

The Skokie Village Board approved modifications to the Holocaust
Museum site plan that will include Six symbolic "points of light" on the
roof near the skylight.
The lights, visible from the Edens Expressway, are among a
handful of changes to the original site plan of the museum, which is
scheduled to open in 2008. The modifications were unanimously approved last
week by the Village Board.
Trustees approved construction of the new Holocaust Memorial
Museum on the 5300 block of Golf Road in 2003. Tigerman McCurry Architects
is building the facility to replace a smaller museum on Main Street.
"The petitioner (The Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois,
Inc.) has been working on developing construction plans for the facility,"
said Skokie Plan Commission Chairman Paul Luke. "This process has led the
Foundation to request modifications to originally approved plans."
Cost estimates
The museum has been estimated to cost $25 million with an
additional endowment of $10 million. Project and Executive Director Richard
Hirschhaut said this week about $12.5 million has been raised for the
building and $1 million for the endowment.
Hirschhaut said the goal is to raise $17 million for the
building by the groundbreaking ceremony, which is scheduled for May.
"We're in good shape and on track," he said."
The Main Street building is only 6,000 square feet, while the
planned museum was originally estimated at more than 43,000 square feet on a
2-acre site.
Original plans called for a large auditorium, a library, a
museum, a shop, a book shop, a 64-seat eating area and Foundation offices.
Under action taken by trustees last week, the exterior building
will include two mechanical penthouses for equipment and changes to some
exterior building panels from metal to a plastic finish. The six symbolic
points of light will be displayed from "glowing light pillars."
Other changes include a partial third floor that has been added
at the west end to accommodate office space requirements.
The partial second floor will be modified to include a board
room and smaller temporary exhibit space.
The number of seats in the main lecture hall of the museum,
originally set at 293, has been reduced to 270 to meet parking requirements.
The new site plan also includes a ground-floor cafe for
gathering before functions and expanded restrooms.

A WA hospital has scrubbed baked ham from its Christmas menu, fearing
Muslim patients could be offended.
It has also overhauled its entire menu so that all meals are now
halal -- containing only meat and other food prepared according to Muslim
customs.
But Port Hedland Regional Hospital staff and many non-Muslim patients
are outraged, saying it is a case of political correctness gone mad.
Kitchen staff are so angry that they have organised a petition
demanding ham be put back on the Christmas menu.
Other WA hospitals are also introducing halal dining, though the
Health Department says Port Hedland is the only one to convert its entire
menu to suit Muslims.
Hospital directors decided to axe the traditional festive season baked
ham because of the high percentage of Muslim patients.
Eating pork or ham is forbidden under Muslim custom.
Until now, Muslims were asked to supply their own food if they did not
want to eat hospital fare.

Poll: Most U.S. Jews oppose Iraq war, have never visited Israel

NEW YORK - Approximately 70 percent of Jews in the United States oppose the war in Iraq, compared to 28 percent who support the war, according to an American Jewish Committee poll, which also showed that nearly 60 percent have never visited Israel.
The poll indicates that 60 percent of U.S. Jews do not agree with the manner in which the U.S. government is conducting the war on terror.
The poll, to be published Wednesday, includes a special section on questions examining U.S. Jews' attitudes on relations with Israel. According to the poll, 59 percent of Jews in the U.S. have never visited Israel; 20 percent of those polled have visited Israel once, and another 20 percent said they had visited Israel more than once.
Of those who have never visited Israel, 49 percent cited the cost of the flight as the main reason, while 20 percent said security concerns were the reason, and 18 percent said they had never visited Israel due to "lack of interest."
Some 79 percent of those polled said that concern for Israel is a main part of their lives as Jews, while 19 percent disagreed with this statement.
According to the poll, 36 percent of American Jews consider themselves very close to Israel, while 41 percent regarded themselves as somewhat close to Israel; 5 percent of respondents said they feel very distant from Israel.
When asked whether they are more optimistic regarding chances of peace between Israel and the Palestinians compared to last year, 21 percent said they are more optimistic, while 19 percent said they were less optimistic; 59 percent of those polled said their opinion had not changed in the past year.
Some 32 percent of those polled said they were Conservative Jews, 29 percent regarded themselves as Reform, 10 percent as Orthodox and 2 percent as Reconstructionist.
Only 16 percent of those polled said they were Republicans, while 54 percent said they were Democrats; 29 percent said they were Independents.

Several days ago, during a rare consumption of television programming, I saw some chatterers talking about BrokeBack Mountain, a new film about "gay" cowboys. Yes, gay cowboys. I was stunned. Wyoming playwright Sandy Dixon objects. She told the press she "has never encountered a gay cowboy" in a lifetime in the state, and doesn't think what Hollywood is doing is right. To the film's producers, she said: "Don't try and take what we had, which was wonderful -- the cowboys that settled the state and made it what it was -- don't ruin that image just to sell a book.... Is prejudice a mental illness?

Bigotry and extreme prejudice are repugnant to many, including the victims and those engaged in furthering progressive social values. Various attempts have been made to encompass that reaction in social mores and attitudes. A new approach among certain mental health professionals to get extreme prejudice to be declared a diagnosable mental illness included in the official list of diagnoses superficially bears promise in objectivizing that repugnance.
A recent article in the Washington Post [Psychiatry Ponders Whether Extreme Bias Can Be an Illness] discusses this attempt to create a new diagnosis for extreme racism and other forms of extreme prejudice. It presents the argument of some that extreme prejudice is so compulsive and damaging to the prejudiced person that it should be viewed as a mental illness deserving its own diagnosis. While radicals and progressives may be tempted to jump on this bandwagon as a weapon in their battle to have racism and prejudice recognized for the personal and social harm they cause, this effort is unjustifiable intellectually and is politically likely to backfire.
Unlike earlier attempts to make racism a diagnosis, the latest attempt justifies itself by the damage that extreme prejudice does to the prejudiced, not to those prejudiced against. This debate reveals the sorry state of thinking in the mental health professions. If conflates two distinct issues: (1) Are there psychological aspects of extreme prejudice that contribute to its tenacity and to its negative effects on the prejudiced [as well as on the victims of prejudice]? And, (2) is it an "illness" with all that that connotes?
The article, and much of the debate, presumes that the question of "illness" is central. If extreme prejudice is an illness [from now on, I will leave off the quote marks, that should always be presumed to be present], then it should be treated, the reasoning goes. If not, then it is either a social issue or an individual proclivity that, no matter how reprehensible, is not the business of those who think in psychological or psychiatric terms.
Mental Illness and Diagnosis
This reasoning reveals the difficulties with the current state of conceptual understanding of the diagnostic process in the mental health professions. Mental illnesses are presumed to be distinct entities that can clearly be distinguished from states of non-illness. I am not one who believes that the concept of mental illness is a logical fallacy.
Like medical doctors, mental health professionals often use diagnosis as a way of categorizing patients and their problems. The use of diagnoses can, at times, help guide treating professionals as to the nature of the problems a patient faces, the origins of those problems, and potential treatment options. Diagnosis can also sometimes be used to straightjacket patients into ill-defined and ill-fitting categories that lend a scientific appearance to socially constructed biases. For example, a diagnosis of major depressive disorder is often used by psychiatrists, and managed care companies as an argument that a person has a "biologically-based mental illness" and thus must receive a biological treatment, such as antidepressant drugs or, more rarely, electroconvulsive ["shock"] treatment. The assignment of the diagnosis mandates a treatment prescription despite considerable controversy among researchers and practitioners as to the relative effectiveness of drug treatment versus psychotherapy. [Of course, the relative costs of prescribing drugs versus talk therapies is an often unacknowledged factor here.]
Some conditions bear enough of the characteristics usually associated with illness to be reasonably referred to as mental illnesses. Among these clearly would be Alzheimer's and other dementias, the general paresis caused by syphilis, and various other conditions known to have clear organic etiologies.
The jury is still out as to the extent organic factors play in schizophrenia. While there is increasing evidence of organic factors -- including genetic factors and illness in the pregnant mother -- playing a role in this condition, no organic factors at this point are known to be either necessary or sufficient. Similarly, there exists evidence suggesting that schizophrenia is a condition qualitatively distinct from other modes of living. For example, epidemiologists find a prevalence of schizophrenia in most societies of about one percent. And anthropologists have found that most, if not all, societies, even those who recognize shamans, also have a category of the crazy whose description resembles that of schizophrenia. On the other hand, there exists evidence questioning this view of schizophrenia as a clearly distinct illness. There is evidence that schizophrenia is the extreme end of a larger spectrum of "conditions." And environmental factors clearly play a role in the prospects for the development of the condition and in its course.
If one concludes that schizophrenia is, indeed, largely a biological condition, then it would be reasonable to describe it as an illness. But what if one decides that environmental factors play a large role?
Once we get beyond the clearly organic conditions, the category of mental illness becomes metaphorical. There is nothing wrong with this. People make sense of the world largely through metaphors. The illness metaphor can be illuminating, but it can also be blinding. The question is whether applying it to the emotional problems and issues people face reveals hidden aspects, or covers over important characteristics. Thus, mental illnesses are like other physical illnesses in that they often appear to be involuntary and they can interfere with normal functioning and/or cause distress. So far the analogy holds, and these are the two conditions at least one of which is considered essential to diagnosable entities included in the American Psychological Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) in its various editions since 1980.
However, many uses of the mental illness construct ignore its metaphorical quality. Thus, it is sometimes presumed without question that anything diagnosed as a mental illness should be treated, despite the fact that the majority of those identified in epidemiological studies as having such a condition do not seek treatment. Others go so far as to form an equation whereby mental illness equals illness, illness means physical condition, and physical condition requires physical treatment. This logic underlies much of the overuse of medications and the downplaying of psychotherapy for problems in living that characterizes the last few decades.
Each of the three links in this equation is fallacious, of course. As I discussed above, mental illness may resemble other illnesses in certain ways, but in most cases definitely is not the same thing. Certainly, if one extends the concept of illness to include mental conditions with no obvious organic cause then illness does not mean physical condition and there is no necessary reason that it should be treated, much less treated by physical interventions.
Prejudice
Now back to prejudice. Those who argue for extreme prejudice as psychopathology claim that it constitutes obsessive abnormal behavior that, depending on the author, either is claimed to cause subjective distress to the perpetrator or to the victim.
Many of our beliefs have a compulsive quality to them, at least in the short run. Try talking to some war supporters in certain parts of the country, or, for that matter, praising President Bush at many of the meetings I attend. The reaction in each case will not be a careful weighing of evidence or a calm question to elicit further information. Is hatred of Bush to be diagnosed an illness on this basis?
The second argument is that extreme prejudice causes subjective distress and/or restriction of functioning in the prejudiced, at least when they are faced with those they are prejudiced against. I'm sure this sometimes occurs. But I'm also sure that some of my friends would experience severe subjective distress if forced to spend much time with the college Republicans. And many of us cause difficulties for ourselves and others in our extended families when we forcefully express our political and social opinions at family gatherings. If liberal or radical politics is not to be considered a psychopathology on this basis, then neither should prejudice, however repugnant we may find it to be.
The Washington Post article begins with some extreme cases, including delusions and obsessions about the feared or hated group:
"The 48-year-old man turned down a job because he feared that a co-worker would be gay. He was upset that gay culture was becoming mainstream and blamed most of his personal, professional and emotional problems on the gay and lesbian movement.
"These fixations preoccupied him every day. Articles in magazines about gays made him agitated. He confessed that his fears had left him socially isolated and unemployed for years: A recovering alcoholic, the man even avoided 12-step meetings out of fear he might encounter a gay person.
"'He had a fixed delusion about the world,' said Sondra E. Solomon, a psychologist at the University of Vermont who treated the man for two years. 'He felt under attack, he felt threatened.'"
Interestingly, in this case the DSM already contains many diagnoses that one might contemplate applying, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, paranoia, or paranoid personality disorder. I've never known my fellow mental health professionals having too much trouble coming up with a diagnosis when they believe someone has a "fixed delusion." So even if one is playing the diagnostic game, there is no need for new categories or new labels to encompass these extreme cases.
What, then, would be gained by adding extreme prejudice to the list of diagnoses? Presumably, it would be viewed as a political victory by those discriminated against, allowing those doing the discriminating to be labeled as "sick." In the best case, such a label could aid a few victims. It would be a statement by the mental health professions that these behaviors are undesirable and should be changed, perhaps even forcefully if necessary.
Costs of Pathologizing
But, do we want to encourage the expanded use of the diagnostic system to express our moral judgments? This game of labeling political and social attitudes with medical labels is a two-edged sword. Those victimized by prejudice, such as gays or blacks and women who refuse to accept their socially assigned roles, have themselves been labeled with any number of diagnoses. Steps that legitimate assigning medical diagnoses to those with certain social and political attitudes can easily be turned upon other groups when the climate changes. Those who have suffered their share at the hands of mental health professionals covertly pursuing political and social goals had best beware.
Another danger is that creating a diagnosis of extreme prejudice will turn attention to the psychological aspects of bigotry, potentially at the expense of social aspects. This not to deny that understanding the psychological aspects of prejudice isn't helpful. It most definitely is. But bigotry and prejudice entwine the personal and the political, the psychological and the social. Attempts to view these problems through a dualistic either/or lens are not productive. Pathologizing prejudice will obscure these complex relationships, allowing therapy to become another detour from changing the social conditions that utilize the penchant for prejudice in many or all of us in order to protect social inequality. Further, pathologizing prejudice, by distinguishing the sick from the unsick, may allow those of us not so diagnosed to feel comfortable, perhaps even smug, with the biases and bigotries that haunt us all.
Modern medicine and related fields are creating new diagnoses at a rapid rate, thus distinguishing more and more of us and our physical and mental states from those of the "normal." Rather than fostering the view that we humans resemble each other more than we differ, and that a just society will be built on a recognition of our commonalities, on égalité and fraternité combined with liberté, pathologizing prejudice will create a new group of ill from whom we can feel distinct, even superior.
At a more concrete level, the creation of diagnostic categories for prejudice or racism may have perverse and unintended consequences. For example, under the Americans for Disabilities Act, those with mental illnesses are afforded certain protections and accommodations. Will racists and homophobes labeled as ill find themselves a protected group, whose behavior must be tolerated as it isn't their fault, but simply the result of their illness?
Adding this new diagnosis may make antiracists and the victims of racism and bigotry feel vindicated. But the costs in conceptual clarity and in muddying the strategies for change are too great. Progressives should not support this new trend.

WASHINGTON - Fewer African-Americans are joining the Army, a trend likely to make it harder to keep the all-volunteer military at full strength.
The percentage of African-Americans among all those who signed up for active-duty Army service fell from 24 percent in 2000 to 14 percent in 2005, according to Army statistics. That's the lowest percentage since 1973, when the draft ended and the all-volunteer military began, say David R. Segal and Mady Wechsler Segal, sociologists with the University of Maryland's Center for Research on Military Organization.
In the past, African-Americans have enlisted at higher rates than their overall percentage of the U.S. population, which was 12.9 percent in the 2000 census.
"These trends may spell trouble for the Army, which has depended on blacks to meet its recruiting goals and re-enlistment targets," the Segals wrote in a November study.
In 1974, blacks made up 27 percent of new Army recruits and 21 percent of new Marine recruits, 16 percent of Air Force enlistees and 10 percent of Navy enlistees, according to the study.

representative in Washington, bears certain similarities to the
Menorah whose lighting he engineers each year on the White House
lawn: big, warm, and impossible to ignore.
What makes Shemtov remarkable is that in his 12 years of dealing
with the world's most powerful power brokers, few seem to consider
him overbearing.
"We have nothing in common except love of Judaism and love of
politics -- and it's not the same Judaism and not the same politics --
but we're still very good friends,? said Steve Rabinowitz, a former
Clinton administration official and a longtime consultant to the
Reform and Conservative movements.
Shemtov's Washington profile is a clear mark of Chabad's
transformation in the past three decades from an insular Chasidic
sect to a player working the Jewish spectrum.
Shemtov has parlayed goodwill into a powerful voice for Chabad's

It's not an advantage that Shemtov's competitors enjoy, but at
least in Washington, they cede the territory to him.

Not long ago, Shemtov pressed hard for a meeting between Chabad

Mark Levin, the executive director for NCSJ, a group that works on
behalf of all the Jewish streams in the FSU, says Shemtov's advocacy
has never rubbed him the wrong way.
"I don't know anyone who doesn't like him," Levin said.
A measure of Shemtov's popularity is the on-the-record praise from
the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the huge pro-Israel lobby.
A Washington Institution
"Rabbi Levi Shemtov is a Washington institution," AIPAC Executive
Director Howard Kohr told JTA. "At the White House, on Capitol Hill
and throughout the Jewish and political communities, Rabbi Shemtov
is a constant and valuable presence."
Calling a 37-year-old an institution may seem extraordinary. Shemtov's
influence derives not from promises of votes or cash, but from an
unerring instinct about whom to cultivate.
His best work is done at dinners he hosts at his residence with his
Australian-born wife, Nechama. The couple has six children.
Shemtov inherited the job from his father Abraham, the movement's
Philadelphia-based envoy to Washington during the Reagan administration.
Levi Shemtov established the Washington office, called the American
Friends of Lubavitch.
Domestically, Shemtov's influence means Chabad assumes a higher profile
than its tiny fraction of the American Jewish population would warrant:
Chabad rabbis are fixtures at meetings with President Bush, and though
many Jews did charitable work in New Orleans during the past hurricane
season, Chabad was one of the few to earn a presidential mention for it.
"One of those rescued from New Orleans put it this way: In the days
after Katrina hit, Chabad saved lives," Bush told the Republican Jewish
Coalition at its 20th anniversary event.
Big, bearded, and in Chabad's black uniform, Shemtov is the most visible
Jewish presence at non-Jewish events, from the presidential inauguration
to the crowded little meet-and-greets that are a staple of Washington life.
'Knows how to get things done on Capitol Hill'
"He is an extremely able and effective advocate who knows how to get
things done on Capitol Hill and throughout Washington," Rep. Steny Hoyer
(D-Md.), the Democratic whip, told JTA.
The exigencies of Washington have forced Shemtov to embrace even
those with differing worldviews. One week he appears at a get-together
for Jewish Democrats; the next he's helping to prep an event for the RJC.
"I hang out at the intersection of Jewish life and the public square,"
Shemtov told JTA "Most of the Jewish community doesn't affiliate with
anybody."
That's inevitable in a town where most folks have come from someplace
else and are planning to stay only a few years.
"Most Chabad emissaries have their territory defined geographically,"
said Nathan Diament, who heads the Orthodox Union office in Washington.
"Levi exists more on a virtual geography."

The last time we checked, the 10th Amendment said that anything that was not mentioned in the U.S. constitution came under the jurisdiction of the states or the people.
So, we wonder how and why a federal judge is ordering Arizona to comply with language rules that favor-by-default Mexicans and other non-English speakers. Wouldn't the 10th Amendment cause that language matter to become a state or local issue? Why is it a federal issue? Are English/non-English language matters found in the U.S. constitution? Not any that we can find.
Indeed, it seems to us that the 10th Amendment is frequently ignored these days [1]. Why? Is the Bill of Rights invalid?

In 1956, at the height of the Cold War, the historian John Lukacs smiled
skeptically at the notion that it was a contest between the opposing
principles of capitalism and communism. Actually, he said, it was a
rivalry between two broadly similar states, Russian and American, both
of which might be more accurately
Unfortunately, that term had already been taken, and nobody wanted it
after 1945. But Lukacs was far from the only one who saw that it fit
most of the regimes that had survived World War II. In his influential
1941 book, The Managerial Revolution, the former Communist James Burnham
argued that the American, German, and Russian systems, despite
superficial differences, were all variants of a new type of bureaucratic
state, in which the actual control exercised by the burgeoning new
"managerial" class was separate from nominal ownership.
John T. Flynn saw Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal as an American
transposition of Fascism. Garet Garrett, another critic of Roosevelt,
understood that the United States was undergoing a revolution - of the
kind Aristotle had called "revolution within the form." America was not
so different from its enemies as most Americans liked to believe. By now
it's a little late for conservatism; most of the things worth conserving
were destroyed a long time ago.
Still, "superficial" differences can be important. If all modern states
are versions of national socialism, I'd rather live under one with
habeas corpus and freedom of the press than under one without them. I'd
rather be permitted to speak my mind than forbidden to.
But let's be clear about this. Americans are still permitted to do a
great many things, though not as many things as their ancestors could
take for granted. Fine. But permission isn't freedom. The privilege of a
subject isn't the right of a free man. If you can own only what the
government permits you to own, then in essence the government owns you.
We no longer tell the state what our rights are; it tells us.
Such is the servitude Americans are now accustomed to under an
increasingly bureaucratic state. Permission, often in the form of legal
licensing, is the residue of the old freedom; but we're supposed to
think that this is still "the land of the free," and that we owe our
freedom to the state, its laws, and especially its wars. The more the
state grows - that is, the more it fulfills the character of national
socialism - the freer we're told we are.
President Bush, who is not exactly your philosopher-king type, would
probably react with surprise, indignation, and bafflement if you called
him a national socialist, since, after all, he thinks a fair amount of
capitalism should be permitted, even encouraged; and he's really not all
that different from most of our rulers. But that's the point. Few of
these men really know what they think; they came in late in the game,
and they play by the rules they see others playing by. What's philosophy
got to do with it? (That was an elective course, wasn't it?)
Let's put it this way. If our rulers were all shipwrecked on a desert
island with no means of escape, they might eventually build monuments
and skyscrapers; but can anyone imagine them creating free institutions?
What sort of Republic would this be if it had been founded by the
Bushes, Clintons, Kennedys, Bidens, and McCains? Its rallying cry would
have been something along the lines of "Give me Medicare benefits or
give me death!"
This is not to insult them, merely to point out their shared premise:
they all think from the perspective of power, of the rulers and not the
ruled. They may be benevolent, in their way; but when they want to do
something for their subjects, it goes without saying that they also
reserve the right to do something to those same subjects. Controlling
the nation's wealth, even under the guise of "capitalism," is always the
main thing. It's "our" wealth, isn't it? Monarchy is so over, but rulers
still love the first-person plural. As in "We owe it to ourselves."
And even when the subjects criticize the rulers - which is permitted -
the criticism itself assumes the same premise and perspective. After
all, we're told that in a democracy the subjects themselves are the
ultimate rulers. Hence the taxpayers themselves may wish for higher
taxes to pay for their privileges, calculating that these will be
chiefly exacted from others.
And freedom? Well, under national socialism, freedom is where you find
it.

The season finale of Larry David's "Curb your enthusiasm" on HBO was the sort
of thing a non-Jew would get in serious trouble for. David finds out that he
was actually adopted and that his real parents are quintessential goyim in
Arizona. But unlike the hundreds of times we see Christians portrayed as
psychopaths or worse, here Jews are portrayed entirely negatively, and Christians are
entirely positive. The Jews are portrayed as grasping, greedy, and
aggressive--even with other Jews, and prone to anxiety attacks. Larry's Jewish friend
lies about the Blue Book value of his the car he buys from Larry, screwing him
out of $5000. Then when Larry dies, his wife immediately asks his attorney about
his bank accounts because he's so secretive with the money. The guy that just
ripped him off for $5000 tries to get out of his debt, and there is general
squabbling over the assets.
Larry goes to heaven and sees his mother who is the stereotypical aggressive,
hostile Jewish mother, demeaning him for ever believing he wasn't a Jew. And,
until he learns the ways of the goyim, Larry can't deal with even routine
mechanical problems (like being responsible for an emergency door on the
airliner; Larry throws a Woody Allenesque neurotic rant when asked to be responsible).
So then Larry goes to Arizona and meets his loving, open, honest Christian
parents. They are right out of Norman Rockwell, saying grace before meals. Larry
helps mom with her knitting, goes fishing with Dad, and learns to ride
horses. Larry helps fix the roof, and he enjoys drinking with the guys in a bar. The
family goes to a Christian Church where they are admonished to be loving and
giving. Larry is a perfect match as a kidney donor for his Jewish friend but
he's been hesitant to do it. Now, though, under the influence of Christianity,
he decides to go ahead and be a donor. So Larry returns to LA (this time he's
able to deal with sitting by the emergency exit, and he orders a drink to
boot). He donates his kidney to his Jewish friend. The Jewish friend is portrayed
as incredibly selfish--he won't lend Larry his golf putter even when Larry is
about to donate his kidney to him. Then, after the operation, the Jewish
friend goes off to a tropical island with a beautiful woman and doesn't even wait
around to pay his respects while Larry is dying from the procedure.
So Christian altruism doesn't pay off. And Larry finds out just before the
operation that the whole thing about his parents is false--he's a Jew after all
and, he doesn't really die; the whole thing about heaven is a dream. So he
wakes up back in his Jewish world, ready for next season.
But seriously, folks, one would think that the Jewish hostile elite would
wake up and realize that the people they hate and despise are really a whole lot
nicer than their own people. And isn't a world full of Christians like these a
whole lot better for Jews than a motley collection of Third World immigrants
that the Jews so eagerly welcome into the US.
David is quite right that Christian altruism is a dead end--that the
altruists end up losing while the selfish Jew is off with the babe on the tropical
island. In fact, the Christianized Larry David is almost ridiculously altruistic.
Who in their right mind would donate a kidney to a guy who won't even let you
use his golf putter? Turning the other cheek indeed!
Anyway, the bad guys win, just like in real life.

(AP) - "Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence Conspiracy to Undermine the UN and Overthrow Saddam Hussein" (Nation Books, 312 pages, $26) -- Scott Ritter
Former U.N. weapons inspector Scott Ritter provides an insider's view into the hunt for weapons of mass destruction during the 1990s in "Iraq Confidential: The Untold Story of the Intelligence Conspiracy to Undermine the U.N. and Overthrow Saddam Hussein."
Ritter writes that American policy to rid the Middle East of Saddam, spanning three administrations, prevented the inspections from demonstrating Iraq's compliance with U.N. Security Council Resolutions that could have led to the lifting of economic sanctions, which continued largely unabated until the U.S.-led invasion 12 years after Desert Storm.
Ritter, a former U.S. Marine officer and ballistic missile expert who led numerous teams by the U.N. Special Commission (UNSCOM) charged with assessing Iraqi compliance, discusses his relationship with Israeli intelligence to aid the inspection process _ a revelation that could have had serious consequences at the time because of distrust of Israel throughout the Arab world, and especially in Iraq.
He also provides in unprecedented detail accounts of close U.S. intelligence involvement with the inspections, and puts his focus on an aborted CIA coup plot in Baghdad in 1996.
The Iraqis contended almost from UNSCOM's beginning that it was being manipulated, if not controlled, by the CIA.
In his book, the former inspector faults the agency for insisting that Iraq continued to have hidden long-range missiles and at least a capability of producing biological, chemical and nuclear weapons long after it had actually been disarmed _ which he says was as early as 1991.
"The reality was that there were many in the U.S. government who simply did not want UNSCOM to succeed," he writes. "In this perverse formulation, a failed UNSCOM would forever justify the continuation of economic sanctions against Iraq."
For their part, Ritter writes, the Iraqis failed to help matters by concealing information about weapons programs, which added to the distrust of U.N. officials, as well as intelligence agencies. He says they unilaterally destroyed SCUD missiles during summer 1991, without being able to provide documentation, and ran a concealment operation that may have been aimed primarily at preventing the inspectors from obtaining secret information on Saddam's security but instead caused UNSCOM to continue believing that weapons material or data was being withheld.
Ritter was one of the most hard-line inspectors in his years with UNSCOM, which ended in 1998. Still, he was one of the few who was outspoken with claims that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction.
He largely provides a gripping outline of his role in the hunt for WMD through an account that often reads like a spy novel. But there are flaws. The book traces a complex conundrum of plots and counter-plots that lends to confusion and _ perhaps inevitably _ unanswered questions.
For example, at one point Ritter refers to a "`lethal finding,' signed in October 1991, that authorized the CIA to create conditions inside Iraq to facilitate the elimination of Saddam Hussein." Yet he is not clear on his source for knowledge of such a policy or who signed it. Presumably, it was the first President Bush, whose public stance that the Iraqi president must be removed before lifting of sanctions eroded Baghdad's incentive to cooperate with the U.N.
Ritter also recounts the 1995 seizure of a shipment of guided missile components bound from Russia to Iraq, in Amman, Jordan, after a tip from the Israelis. The development was hailed at the time as a major find of Iraq's efforts to violate the U.N. weapons ban. Although Ritter notes the guidance systems turned out later to be for submarine-fired missiles and useless to the Iraqis, he leaves the reader wondering if the entire episode might have been arranged by Israel to discredit Iraq.
Overall, Ritter provides a view through trained eyes of an unprecedented international effort to rid a rogue regime of weapons of mass destruction, and of a determination by hidden forces to prevent that effort from being acclaimed as a success.
"Intelligence, to me, has always been about the facts," Ritter writes. "When intelligence is skewed to fit policy, then the entire system of trust that is fundamental in a free and democratic society is put at risk."

Biblical Robe Produced For Use by High Priest in Holy Temple

After much hard work and research, the Techelet (azure blue) robe of the High
Priest has been completed by the Temple Institute and it is hoped to be fit to
be worn in the Third Temple. The blue coat, or me'il techelet as it is called
in the Torah, sports 72 golden bells alternating with 72 pomegranates attached
around its hem, woven of blue, purple, and scarlet wool.
The project was researched and undertaken by skilled artisans over the past
three years. It will join the already completed ephod and choshen
(breastplate), featuring the 12 precious stones associated with the 12 tribes
of Israel. They are located at the Temple Institute in Jerusalem's Old City,
and it is hoped they will be found fit to be used by the High Priest in the
third temple.
Master weaver Yehudit Avraham wove the robe using the Navajo "two-sided"
weaving technique. The Techelet dye used is the most widely accepted of the
blue dyes thought to be the Biblical Blue.
The commandment to make such a robe appears in Exodus 28: 31-35:
"And you shall make the robe of the ephod entirely out of blue wool. Its head-
opening shall be folded over within it, its opening shall have a border all
around of weaver's work - it shall be for it like the opening of a coat of
mail, that it should not be torn. And you shall make on its hem pomegranates of
blue, purple, and scarlet wool, on its hem all around, and gold bells between
them, all around; a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate,
all around. It must be on Aaron in order to minister. Its sound shall be heard
when he enters the Sanctuary before Hashem and when he leaves, so that he not
die."
"This is the first robe woven entirely out of techelet in nearly 2,000 years,"
Rabbi Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute told Arutz-7. "Next week we shall
begin to observe the holiday of Chanukah, which marks the rededication of the
Second Temple in the days when the wicked King Antiochus rose up against the
Jewish people with decrees meant to separate them from G-d and His Torah.
Chanukah also marks the day when the original desert tabernacle was completed.
Our sages emphasize that every year on Chanukah, when we kindle the festive
lights, there's a sublime illumination of holy light that is released into the
world - a continuation of the original hidden light of creation and a spark of
the light of the holy Menorah in the Temple. Above all, Chanukah is the time of
miracles and thanksgiving to G-d. The completion of this sacred garment marks a
great step forward towards the renewal of the Divine service in the Holy
Temple."
In the near future, the Institute plans to embark on another major project: the
production and supplying of the Torah-specified white garments of the ordinary
priests for every male Jewish descendant of Aaron. "Every Kohen from all over
the world, will be given the opportunity to register and order his own uniform
so that he can be ready to serve in the rebuilt Holy Temple," Richman said.

Hundreds of young Israeli women looking for

tomb of a venerated rabbi in the hopes that their
marriage prayers will be answered.
Authorities have collected around 400 pairs of
knickers and bras from the grilles of the tomb's
window and on nearby trees, the Maariv daily has
reported.
According to Jewish tradition, anyone who is
unmarried will meet their soul mate and marry within a
year if they visit the final resting place of Rabbi
Yenothan Ben Uziel in northern Israel.
But Rabbi Israel Deri, who is in charge of protecting

women's prayers will go unanswered.

That's the wounded buffalo cry coming from NRO's Corner as Jonah Goldberg reacts to the cheesy spectacle of conservative harlots Doug Bandow of the Cato Institute and Peter Ferrara of the Institute for Policy Innovation accepting payola to write opinion columns and twirl their credentials like titty-tassles. First Armstrong Williams, and now this--it taints the whole family of scribes, complains Goldberg.
"In addition to all of that, it's just a huge hassle. We're all going to have to be even more anal about disclosure and answer charges of corruption even more. And for such paltry sums. Even at the full $2,000 per column Bandow made less than $50 K over ten years. Was that really worth the blow to his reputation and Cato's never mind the inconveniences it causes the rest of us?"
Yes, it's a stone-cold drag, but fellow Cornerite Ramesh Ponnuru is more sanguine as he polishes his cufflinks.
"I don't think the problem is widespread. And I don't think Cato's reputation is tarnished, either: They had one bad apple, and got rid of him when they found out. The Institute for Policy Innovation, on the other hand, does not look good."

On the other other hand, TPM's Josh Marshall contends that the problem is commonplace, indeed is quite a bedbug epidemic inside certain conservative slop shops. (The italics below are mine.)
"Now, I used to follow the OpEd payola story pretty closely... And I have to say that when Ferrara implies that this is a common practice, boy is he right, particularly on the right. There are even shops in DC that specialize in ginning up bogus 'man on the street' opeds which they then get placed on major oped pages. Another area where my reporting showed this to be very common was among foreign lobbyists, a number of whom had ex-foreign service officers and various other foreign policy bigwigs on retainer to write opeds advocating on behalf of their clients. Actually, 'write' overstates the matter. The lobbying firm writes the OpEd and the expert signs it.
"It hadn't occurred to me that Abramoff dabbled in this racket. But now that I think about it, I can't imagine why it hadn't. If he had these two on the payroll, there must be many, many more."

"What I'm talking about is when, say, the American Federation of Hot Dog Manufacturers wants to beat some new regulation. So they hire a shop in DC which then goes out and finds some sidewalk hot dog vendor and offers to pay him a couple grand if he'll pretend to be the author of an OpEd saying how the new regs will drive his hot dog stand out of business. They then shop it to one of the conservative OpEd pages which are known to be an easy mark for this sort of scam."
Easy mark or willing partner? One thing we're beginning to learn about the DeLay-Abramoff K-Street Project era we're in is the circular maze of complicity that is turning the capital into one big grunting daisy chain of sleaze.
