When graduate student Christopher T. Brown finished his master's thesis,
he decided it was time to pay tribute to the "degenerates" who had been an
"ever-present hindrance during my graduate career."
But his unflattering salutes, including a four-letter profanity, to the
school's dean and staff, former Gov. Pete Wilson and the UC regents, to
name a few, ended up offending UC Santa Barbara officials. They withheld
his degree for 11 months, saying the thesis failed to meet academic
standards because such broadsides are out of place.
Ruling in a dispute over First Amendment freedoms and academic discipline
this week, a federal appeals court in San Francisco sided with the
university, concluding that Brown should have minded his manners.
The university's decision was "reasonably related to a legitimate
(educational) objective: teaching (Brown) the proper format for a
scientific paper," said Judge Susan Graber in Monday's 2-1 ruling by the
Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Not necessarily, said dissenting Judge Stephen Reinhardt. He maintained
Brown should have the chance to persuade a jury that the school punished
him for the content of his criticism.
Reinhardt noted that despite UCSB's professed concern for academic
standards, the school backed down and awarded Brown his degree around the
that ABC-TV news expressed interest in the case. UC lawyer Christopher
Patti denied the suggestion, saying the process that led to Brown's degree
started before the network contacted the university.
Brown was traveling in Latvia on Tuesday, his lawyer said, on vacation
from his job in the computer field, far afield from his 1999 master's
thesis on "the morphology of calcium carbonate: factors affecting crystal
shape."
The attorney, Paul Hoffman, said he didn't know why Brown felt strongly
enough that school and state officials had hindered his graduate studies
to include mentions in his thesis.
A committee in the Department of Materials Science approved the academic
content of the thesis but didn't see its caustic acknowledgments section
-- which Brown called "disacknowledgments" -- until he filed it with the
university library several months later. The committee then decided that
the thesis failed to meet professional standards.
Brown agreed to remove the profanity but would not delete the section, and
he appealed the committee's ruling unsuccessfully up the university
ladder.
He was finally awarded his degree on his department's recommendation in
May 2000 after the 11-month period in which Brown said he had trouble
getting a job and suffered financially, the basis of his damage suit.
The stakes were relatively modest, but the suit gave the court a chance to
address a serious legal issue: whether public universities have the same
control over student speech as the Supreme Court allowed public school
administrators in a 1988 ruling that upheld censorship of a high school
newspaper. The panel left the issue unresolved after producing three
separate opinions that consumed 50 pages.
Graber, in the lead opinion, said university officials deserved the same
deference as high school administrators in matters involving academic
standards. Reinhardt disagreed, saying "academic freedom and vigorous
debate" were entitled to greater protection in a college setting. He noted
that two other appeals courts had reached the same conclusion.
The third judge, Warren Ferguson, ruled against Brown for a different
reason, one that the university itself had not argued: The student acted
in an "academically dishonest manner" by failing to include the offending
passage in the thesis he submitted to the committee.
"If anything, the decision creates confusion," said Hoffman, Brown's
attorney. He said he would seek a rehearing before a larger appellate
panel.

When a tragedy occurs at some school, office or worksite, policemen, firefighters, paramedics or rescue workers will rush to the scene to provide a much-needed service, saving lives. Increasingly, however, we see another so-called helping professional on the scene - the trauma or grief counsellor - who's been called in to save psyches.
Somehow, it's now the norm after every school shooting, car crash or airline disaster to bring in psychologists who, Moses-like, will lead those who survive the tragedy or even witnessed it to the promised land of "wellness." Somehow we've come to accept the idea that stranger with a few initials behind her name is needed to help us deal with the experience of violence or death.
Where did we ever get the infantile idea that after some tragedy - a parent's loss of a child, for example - we're supposed to be "healed"? Dr. Tana Dineen, in her book "Manufacturing Victims: What the Psychology Industry is Doing to People," answers to that question. And a fine and devastating answer it is. Well-researched, sharply focussed and leavened with numerous concrete examples, her critique of the profession of psychology should make you want to, well, burn your self-help books and motivational tapes.
The opening paragraph neatly sums up her argument: "Psychology presents itself as a concerned and caring profession working for the good of its clients, but the effects are damaged people, divided families, distorted justice, destroyed companies and a weakened nation."
That's a stinging indictment. And after you read Ms. Dineen's book you'll be hard pressed not to agree with it. Certainly, Dineen is careful to acknowledge that in the hands of dedicated researchers, psychology remains a respected field of scientific inquiry. The focus of her scorn is the clinical psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and sundry counsellors and mental health practitioners who distort or ignore the research and reduce it to ego-stroking psychobabble and feel-good placebos.

Perhaps her most explosive argument is that refuting the concept of recovered memories. Dineen cites numerous cases where people, usually men, have been falsely accused of sexual abuse crimes based on such "memories." According to Dineen, there is no reputable scientific evidence that these memories are anything more than fanciful inventions. Because of this and other misuses of research, Dineen says psychologists should be barred from testifying in court as "experts" on human behaviour. Indeed, most of what psychologists is little more that job-creation, she argues. Therapists need patients, so they create disorders with which they can label their erstwhile consumers. In this way everybody becomes "abnormal" and in need of treatment.
The industry is also fond of inflating symptoms far beyond the original condition they once described. For example, the word "trauma" once referred to a physical injury. But now, after much "semantic inflation," trauma covers anything that upsets us. Ditto for "addiction;" it no longer refers to drug or alcohol abuse, but also to sex and shopping.
Psychology may have once been part of science's laudatory effort to mitigate life's hardships, but Dineen ably demonstrates how the psychology industry has gone, well, crazy in its attempt to pathologize every aspect of the human condition and turn every upset into a "dis-ease" in need of therapeutic treatment.
What Dineen's book ultimately reveals is the steady sentimentalization of society. A sentimentalist is someone in denial, and what she denies is reality. The sentimentalist assumes that good ends can be achieved without effort, self-discipline, patience or sacrifice. Such sentimentalism might be tolerated if it were confined to a deluded few. But western societies increasingly driven by sentimentalists promoting social engineering schemes. We are a society that runs whining to politicians who'll feel out pain or, more often than not, to a therapist who'll assure us that we aren't stupid, lazy or greedy, but victims of poor parenting.
In our secularized world, psychotherapy has replaced religion in that, like religion, it is what we turn to to cope with the vagaries of existence. The difference, though, is that psychology, unlike religion, seeks to eliminate those experiences that define what it is to be human. At the core of human experience is the mystery of both the grandeur and the misery of self-conscious mortality. Unlike animals, humans know they will die. Yet, if we have courage, we also learn that our awareness of death gives life its juice and joy. It is because our lives are so painfully transient that they can be so achingly meaningful.
Psychotherapy seeks to deny those experiences that make us human. As such, it is a threat to our freedom. As philosopher Leon Kass puts it, the ultimate aim of psychotherapy is "to order human experience in terms of easy, predictable contentment." But if we are always haunted by death, there is the need for character and courage to live with what we know is ineradicable. Psychotherapy, however, makes emotional security easy by eradicating the need for moral virtue.
This has political consequences: Individuals freed from moral responsibility are no longer citizens, but patients or victims unable to manage their lives. As Dineen writes: "The psychology industry considers and treats people as children who, regardless of age, experience or status, must be protected, guided, sheltered and disciplined." But this smothering individual responsibility for the sake of self-esteem creates a depoliticized society of contented creatures who need only to be administered and kept passified.
And that, as far as I can see, is a form of tyranny, albeit a nice one. If so, Dineen's book provides the valuable service of exposing the threat to our freedom posed by all those trauma counsellors rushing to rescue our shivering psyches.

Germany's most notorious postwar neo-Nazi party was led by an intelligence agent working for the British, according to both published and unpublished German sources.
The alleged agent - the late Adolf von Thadden - came closer than anyone to giving the far-right real influence over postwar German politics.
Under his leadership, the National Democratic party (NPD) made a string of impressive showings in regional elections in the late 60s, and there were widespread fears that it would gain representation in the federal parliament.
Yet, according to a report earlier this year in the Cologne daily, the Kšlner Stadt-Anzeiger, the man dubbed "the New FŸhrer" was working for British intelligence throughout the four years he led the NPD, from 1967 to 1971.
However, a former senior officer in German intelligence told the Guardian this week that he had been informed of a much longer-standing link between Von Thadden and British intelligence. His recollection raises the question of whether the German far-right-winger was under the sway of M16 when he and others founded the NPD in 1964.
Dr Hans Josef Horchem, who was the head of the Hamburg office of the Verfassungsschutz - the West German security service - from 1969 to 1981, said he received regular visits from British intelligence liaison officers.
"We held general discussions on security. At one of these - I think it was towards the end of the 70s- they said, 'Adolf von Thadden was in contact with us', and that that was in the 1950s". Mr Horchem did not know whether the links between the German and British intelligence had continued into the 60s and 70s.

Here.
For some time now, I have been receiving small gifts from a generous
institute in the United States. The gifts are high-quality translations of
articles from Arabic newspapers which the institute sends to me by email
every few days, entirely free-of-charge. The emails also go to politicians
and academics, as well as to lots of other journalists. The stories they
contain are usually interesting.
Whenever I get an email from the institute, several of my Guardian
colleagues receive one too and regularly forward their copies to me -
sometimes with a note suggesting that I might like to check out the story
and write about it...
The organisation that makes these translations and sends them out is the
Middle East Media Research Institute (Memri), based in Washington but with
recently-opened offices in London, Berlin and Jerusalem. Its work is
subsidised by US taxpayers because as an "independent, non-partisan,
non-profit" organisation, it has tax-deductible status under American law.
Memri's purpose, according to its website, is to bridge the language gap
between the west - where few speak Arabic - and the Middle East, by
"providing timely translations of Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew media".
Despite these high-minded statements, several things make me uneasy
whenever I'm asked to look at a story circulated by Memri. First of all,
it's a rather mysterious organisation. Its website does not give the names
of any people to contact, not even an office address...
The second thing that makes me uneasy is that the stories selected by Memri
for translation follow a familiar pattern: either they reflect badly on the
character of Arabs or they in some way further the political agenda of
Israel. I am not alone in this unease.
Ibrahim Hooper of the Council on American-Islamic Relations told the
Washington Times: "Memri's intent is to find the worst possible quotes from
the Muslim world and disseminate them as widely as possible..."
Evidence from Memri's website also casts doubt on its non-partisan status.
Besides supporting liberal democracy, civil society, and the free market,
the institute also emphasises "the continuing relevance of Zionism to the
Jewish people and to the state of Israel".
That is what its website used to say, but the words about Zionism have now
been deleted. The original page, however, can still be found in internet
archives.
The reason for Memri's air of secrecy becomes clearer when we look at the
people behind it. The co-founder and president of Memri, and the registered
owner of its website, is an Israeli called Yigal Carmon. Mr - or rather,
Colonel - Carmon spent 22 years in Israeli military intelligence and later
served as counter-terrorism adviser to two Israeli prime ministers, Yitzhak
Shamir and Yitzhak Rabin...

In response to Il Ragno's complaint/suggestion regarding my movie reviews: You will be happy to learn that I am working on an article about my favorite Westerns. John Ford and Sergio Leone are prominently featured.
But I am not going to stop reviewing current movies for several reasons. I am saving some of this material for an essay I am working on called "Why I Write for VNN," but it will not hurt to tip my hand. First, I like going to current movies, and I like writing about them. Pleasurable activities tend to be repeated. Second, some current movies are really good. Some of them even promote White values. David Lynch's "The Straight Story," for instance. One does not have to look back to the 1950s to find good movies, so stop being an old fogy!
Third, millions of people go to see movies like "Signs," "Minority Report," "Lord of the Rings," and "Attack of the Clones." Millions of people discuss these movies with their friends. Many thousands of people look for reviews on the web before and after they see movies. Writing White Nationalist reviews of current films is an ideal way of getting our message into the current culture. Many people stumble across VNN because of the movie reviews. Some of them get hooked. (It was Mark Rivers's movie reviews that got me hooked on VNN.) After all, there is something intoxicating about people speaking the truth about the lies our system is founded on, the lies that are constantly promoted by the Hollywood propaganda machine, lies like equality, multiracialism, multiculturalism, individualism, consumerism, democracy, etc.
Fourth, Hollywood and the other branches of the mass media have invested billions in capital to create the greatest propaganda machine in history. The Soviets were not even close. The Soviet people knew they were not free. They knew they were being lied to. So they did not believe the propaganda. Americans think they are free, so they believe the propaganda. The scale and scope and coordination of the propaganda is also unprecedented in history. The propaganda is unrelenting and omnipresent because it is at war with reality. Even a moment's respite, even the tiniest glitch in the matrix, and people might start noticing reality and start thinking for themselves.
When a White Nationalist regime takes power (not if, when), we will expropriate all this capital and use it to tell the truth. Until the revolution, however, there is another way of expropriating Hollywood's capital. By teaching people to view movies critically, we can instantly transform the mass media from an anti-White propaganda machine into a classroom for White Nationalism. When people become aware that they are being lied to, they no longer believe the lies. Instead, they begin learning about the liars, their techniques, their genocidal anti-White agenda, and the all-encompassing nature of the system they have created to delude and destroy us.
Teaching that lesson is an opportunity we can't afford to pass up!

Congratulations to David Irving for confronting the Kikes at the rip-off
T-shirt shops. I, too, was a victim of this scam about six years ago.
The city of Key West was aware of this back then. They had a "code
enforcement" secretary at the Key West Police Dept. who handled the
T-shirt shops. After seeing my credit charged $214.00 for four $8.00
T-shirts with $6.00 decal transfers on each shirt, I went ballistic on
the Kikes. Three swarthy Kikes and a New York Negro employee threatened
to call the police on me. Instead, I left the store and went to the Key
West Police myself to complain. The Negress at the code enforcement
desk told me that she has had many complaints on the particular store
with which I had problems. She said a store can be legally closed after
three successful complaints had been made against them.
I eventually paid the proper price of $56.00 plus tax. My only question
is how come the stores could stay open for so long? During my trip I
talked to others who were ripped-off. Surely there were more than three
complaints against the stores.

As the issue of immigration surfaces in Iowa, it is not surprising that so does the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). My organization, Voice of Citizens Together (VCT - d.b.a. American Patrol), has been labeled a "hate group" by SPLC.
A few words on my background. For ten years I struggled with American Indians to help them secure the rights and abilities to develop their own energy resources. I was V.P., General Manager of Arrowstar, Inc., an Indian-owned seismic exploration company that successfully trained hundreds of American Indians in seismic data acquisition, while at the same time discovering oil on reservations. During this time I revealed a disturbing pattern of discrimination against Indians at ARCO, which they quickly corrected. I co-founded VCT with Shirley Lertzman, a Jewish woman who was just completing her final term on the Los Angeles County Grand Jury, after serving seventeen years in that position. She and her husband, Dr. Lertzman, are now retired in Las Vegas, and we are still friends. Does it seem reasonable that a high-profile Jewish woman would get tied up with a Nazi? Hardly.
We have so many Jewish supporters some said we were a Jewish front organization. But with so many Black and Hispanic Christians in our midst, such a claim doesn't stick. Would it seem possible that leading Jewish leaders such as Irv Rubin, head of the Jewish Defense League (of which I am a member), support a hate group for so many years? Hardly.
SPLC's Web site say we are hate group in part because our video, Immigration: Threatening the Bonds of Our Union, points to the role of Mexican gangs in bringing methamphetamines to Iowa.
On May 13, the New York Times reported: "It's been growing tremendously in the last five or six years," said Joe Keefe, chief of operations at the drug agency. 'In 1996, we looked at methamphetamine trafficking by the Mexican nationals and had 60 investigations. In the last couple of months, we had over 800.' The organizations have also expanded their marketing all over the country, he said, such that methamphetamine produced in California can be bought on the street in Portland, Me." Our video shows Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) accusing Mexican gangs of being behind the methamphetamine curse in America.
In my judgment the only hate group involved in this dispute is the SPLC - they hate the truth.
America needs the truth today as never before. Caving in to to name callers like the SPLC will deprive us of the kind of open debate that is vital to our future as a nation.

A coalition of organizations who were the target of an assault by Latinos on the Fourth of July, 1996, will hold a press conference to discuss the attack on the principal of Burton Elementary school on February 1, 1999.
Ezola Foster, the black high school teacher who was forced out of teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District by radical Latinos, will join Glenn Spencer, president of Voice of Citizens Together and Jesse Peterson of B.O.N.D., to call on the Los Angeles School Board, and other school district boards, to take action to end movements toward Hispanic separatism.
Specific proposals will be advanced to meet this objective.
SATURDAY, FEB.. 6 --- Irv Ruben of the Jewish Defense League will join the press conference to condemn the attack on the Jewish principal.

On Friday, August 1, VCT posted a message declaring the demise of California nd our plans to relocate. We said we would be off the air for a while. We were, or about two days.
VCT did not say it was quitting. We said that California was lost to Mexico. Short of a miracle, it is.
On Sunday, August 3, Raul Contreras, a talk show host on KOGO in San Diego, announced that "The fascist VCT was quitting." Au Contraire, Contreras.
We said that our operations would be relocating. This may take a while. In the meantime, we will continue to do our best to resist the Mexican onslaught.
By the way, in the piece in the Los Angeles Times which ran on Sunday, August 3, Gregory Rodriquez said,
"They [which he identified as being the Jews] fear that L.A.'s emerging Latino leadership, which, since last November, has adopted the slogan "Latino issues are California issues," is becoming either ethnically "nationalist" or so self-confident that they will forget that interethnic coalitions have been the key to recent Democratic success in the city."
So the Jewish political crowd thinks that the Latinos are becoming nationalistic. Could it be that they have been reading our L.A. Times ads? You bet.
VCT's co-founder, Shirley Lertzman, a former member of the Los Angeles County Grand Jury, used to complain to me, "When are the Jews going to realize that they are Americans?" Shirley now lives in Las Vegas.
VCT has lots of Jewish members. They just don't happen to be in the majority of their ethnic family.

Since Newsday has seen fit to attack me personally, I would hope you will have the decency to allow me to respond to each of your accusations in order.
First, I never called Mario Obledo a "-ing cockroach", but maybe I should have. This co-founder of the Ford Foundation created Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. Shortly thereafter, he got on a Los Angeles radio station and said, "California is going to be a Hispanic [read Mexican] state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave." He went on to say they "should go back to Europe". This was after he threatened to "burn down or blow up a billboard he didn't like" [click here for RealAudio file of Obledo's utterances]. These terrorist threats by this ethnic cleanser caused the media company to remove the billboard - a clear attack on freedom of speech.
As to my unpublished and uncirculated letter about the Mexican culture, in Bordering on Chaos, Pulitzer Prize winning author Andres Oppenheimer observed, "There is nothing new about Mexico's tradition of lying, of course. Since as far as historians could remember, double talk and deceit had been part of Mexico's culture." What I said about the widespread use of false IDs by Mexicans in the U.S. was true. My letter went on to say that when Mexicans assimilated "they dropped this defense mechanism".
Our Web site features many articles and comments. That one of them was written by someone who at some time in the past might have used an inappropriate phrase ("slimy mass of brown glop") is beyond our capability or interest to police. We judge each article on its own merits.
As to the so-called attack on Jews, our radio program, The American Patrol Report, did have guest, a professor at California State University at Long Beach, who argues that Jewish organizations have played a major role in promoting immigration into the United States. Not one of our Jewish members complained or asked to be removed from our mailing list following the show.
American Patrol was founded by Glenn Spencer and Shirley Lertzman, a Jewish woman who was just completing her final tour on the Los Angeles County Grand Jury. Some of our most effective and outspoken supporters are Jewish.
In your editorial you report, "American Patrol is a hate group," SPLC spokesman Mark Potok reiterated yesterday. "There isn't even room for discussion."
The real story here is that the Southern Policy Law Center does not want to leave room for discussion. It is the hate group - it hates the truth.
