JERUSALEM -- A Palestinian identified by Israeli authorities as a militant
leader was killed Sunday night when the public telephone he was using exploded.
Palestinian television described the death as an Israeli assassination.
Mohammad Shtawi Abayat, 27, was among six Palestinians killed Sunday in violence
across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Abayat reportedly was talking on the phone outside the main hospital serving
Beit Jala, a community next to Bethlehem. He was a member of a prominent
Bethlehem area clan that had at least 22 members exiled, arrested or killed by
Israeli security forces since the Palestinian uprising began in September 2000.
Also Sunday, Israeli troops killed five Palestinians, including a 4-year-old
boy, wounded two women and arrested eight others during military operations in
the two Palestinian regions.

Note:
In fact, the "exploding phone booth" is not a new method used by Jews. One site
((http://www.phrmg.org/monitor2002/feb2002-3.htm) reports these:
[Iyad] Hardan was killed on 5 April 2001 when the public telephone he was
using exploded. The phone booth was located just outside the detention
center where he was being held, and Hardan used it regularly.
On Sunday, June 24, 2001, at around 11 a.m., [Osama] Jawabreh was using a
public telephone in the Old City of Nablus when the phone booth exploded.
[he was killed] Two children, Malak Shabaro (2) and her brother Amar
Shabaro (4) were injured by shrapnel from the explosion. Jawabreh regularly
used this phone that was located near his house in the center of Nablus.
Another site (http://www.palwatc.org/leaflets/clashes_302.html) writes:
According to LAW's documentation, 30 Palestinians (including 2 police
officer), in addition to 16 bystanders, have fallen victim to Israel's
policy of extra-judicial execution. The weaponry used to carry out these
assassinations has included sniper fire, missiles fired from helicopter
gunships, tank-fire and bombs planted in cars and telephone booths. The
killings were carried out under circumstances that demonstrate complete
disregard for the risk involved to the lives of bystanders. Some of those
targeted were gunned down in town centers, or even in a taxi with other
passengers present.
