Dr. Baruch Goldstein Gravesite

On the Feast of Purim (February 1994), Dr. Baruch Goldstein, dressed as an army officer, entered the Tomb of the Patriarchs, and shot to death 29 Arabs and wounded approximately a hundred more.  It is our great misfortune that Dr. Baruch Goldstein may G-D avenge his blood, who was brutally murdered by the Arabs is no longer with us.

The Goldstein Family requested to bury him in the ancient Jewish Cemetery of the Martyrs in Hevron, but was denied permission by the Regional Commander of Judea and Samaria.  The government allocated a special site for the grave, in the Tourist Park in Kiryat Arba named in memory for Rabbi Meir Kahane may G-D avenge his blood.  An Arab assassin murdered Rabbi Kahane, founder and leader of the Kach Movement, in the USA.  It is of great significance that Dr. Baruch Goldstein was buried in the Tourist Park, as he was the main initiator in the founding of the park when he was a member of the local city council of Kiryat Arba.

Over the years, the grave has become a site of pilgrimage.  Numerous people from all over the world come to pray and honor his memory.  The Local Religious Council of Kiryat Arba declared the gravesite a cemetery.  Because the land surrounding the grave is very muddy, Dov Dribben may G-D avenge his blood, built sidewalks for the convenience of the people who come to pray.  Dov Dribben was later brutally murdered at the "Maon Ranch".  Later other conveniences such as a sink with water, a cupboard with prayer books, and pedestals for candles were added to accommodate people coming to the grave.  Streetlights were also installed around the grave.

Ron Cohen, the present day Minister of Industry was incensed by the changes that were made at the gravesite.  He actively campaigned to destroy the grave and remove the body to a cemetery in Jerusalem.  Minister Cohen has recruited other members of the Israeli parliament to aid him in his campaign, such as Benny Alon from the right-wing "Moledet" Party and Nisan Slomily for the religious "Mafdal" Party.

Friends of Dr. Goldstein discovered the scheme and with the help of members of the Israeli Parliament from the religious parties of  "Shas" and "Agudath Israel", they prevented Ron Cohen from authorizing his law.  The proposed Law was then changed to prohibit the establishment of monuments in memory of terrorist.  Ron Cohen still was not satisfied. He claimed that the lettering on the gravestone which eulogizes Dr. Goldstein and proclaims him as a Holy Hero, the streetlights, the sidewalk around the grave, the prayer books and the cupboard, and the pedestals with candles are all to be considered a monument to the memory of a terrorist.  As such, they should be destroyed according to the law.  It is a fact that on the gravestone of "A's A-Din El-Kasam, there is a real monument which declares:  "Together in the way of El Kasam", did not interest Ron Cohen. A's A-Din El-Kasam was the leader of the Arab Gangs in the '30's', that today the 'Hamas' army units call themselves by his name, in his memory.

After a long struggle in the High Court, the Judges decided that all the elements surrounding the grave must be removed.  The matter of the lettering on the Gravestone will be decided at a future date.

After the Court Decision, hundreds of policemen arrived in Kiryat Arba to destroy the elements around the grave.  The Friends of Goldstein, led by Baruch Marzel, Noam Federman, Tiran Polak, and Michael Ben Horin managed to deter the police from destroying the area around the gravesite for a time.  Only after many hours and arrests did the police finish their job.

After the police left, many people came to the grave and prayed.

The following week, "Unknown" people defaced the El-Kasam grave, and destroyed signs in memory of Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

During the Feast of Purim, The Friends of Goldstein are going to celebrate a feast near his grave to honor him, in appreciation of him
