Should We Allow Machines to Displace Humans?

Key word in the headline: “allow.” Human displacement doesn’t have to happen, just like immigration didn’t have to happen. We let it happen. So, machines will soon eliminate the need for Mexican lettuce pickers in California, but, at the same time, the machines will usher in left-wing socialism (as opposed to National Socialism) and lives of excessive leisure? Is that good? Worse yet, the machines will “learn.” Soon they won’t even need us (recall the movie “The Terminator”).

“A lot of people are likely to be left behind. And I think that in order to solve that problem, we’re ultimately going to have to find a way to decouple incomes from traditional work. And the best, more straightforward way I know to do that is some kind of a guaranteed income or universal basic income.”
