Prison Guard Slain HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- [color="red"]Lawyers for a Maryland inmate charged with murdering a correctional officer have asked a judge to bar prosecutors from seeking the death penalty.

Prosecutors have said they plan to seek the death penalty if 20 year old Brandon T Morris is convicted of first degree murder in the January 26th shooting death of Jeffery A Wroten of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Wroten was shot with his own gun while guarding Morris at a hospital in Hagerstown.

[color="red"]Morris' public defenders argue that Maryland's lethal injection method is cruel and unusual punishment. They filed a motion last week in Washington County Circuit Court citing the case of convicted killer Vernon L. Evans Junior.

Evans' execution has been stayed pending a decision by the Maryland Court of Appeals. In that case, lawyers have argued that the lethal-injection drugs used by the Maryland Division of Correction may not work properly and [color="red"]could cause excruciating pain.

Accused Inmate Claims Amnesia In Officer's Slaying

AP) HAGERSTOWN, Md. A state prison inmate charged with murdering a correctional officer in January has claimed amnesia, according to a document admitted as evidence Monday.

[color="red"]Brandon T. Morris, 20, [color="red"]told a Maryland State Police investigator in a tape-recorded statement that he went to sleep shackled to a Washington County Hospital bed in Hagerstown and woke up outdoors in his boxer shorts about six miles away with a gun in his hand, surrounded by police.

[color="red"]Morris claimed to have no memory of getting free from the shackle, seizing Officer Jeffery A. Wroten's gun, shooting him in the head, taking a hospital visitor captive, hijacking a taxi cab, robbing the driver and forcing him to lead police on a chase into nearby Pennsylvania, where the cab crashed. Morris ran back into Maryland before he was captured.

[color="red"]"I just went to sleep and I woke up and I was out of bed," Morris told Trooper First Class Richard Bachtell several hours after his arrest on Jan. 26. [color="red"]When Bachtell listed the alleged offenses, Morris sounded stunned.

[color="red"]"That's crazy," he said.

"Yeah," Bachtell replied, "and [color="red"]the only thing you're not explaining is the 20 minutes when those crimes were committed."

[color="red"]"I don't know nothing about it," Morris said.

Maryland Corrections Officer Shot by Inmate

[color="red"]A hospitalized inmate grabbed a corrections officer's gun and shot him early Thursday, then ran from the hospital and carjacked a taxi before crashing about 5 miles away, police said.

[color="red"]The inmate fled on foot after the crash in State Line, Pa., but was quickly captured.

Corrections department spokeswoman Jacquelyn Lampell said [color="red"]the officer had been shot in the head and was taken to intensive care to be stabilized before surgery. She said he worked at the Roxbury Correctional Institution, one of three nearby prisons for men that houses medium-security inmates.

Details about the shooting remained sketchy, but police said it occurred about 5 a.m.

Washington County Hospital spokeswoman Marina Shannon said patient care had not been affected but declined further comment on the gunfire.

"Our first priority is to our patients and our staff," Shannon said.

Police said the inmate was in custody but provided no further information about him or the reason he had been taken to Washington Hospital.
