Medical experts who review the psychological profile of Russian leader Vladimir Putin unearthed this week by USA Today will probably dismiss its findings. Those who have say the study is full of errors, and its author lacks credentials for claiming that Putin suffers from a mild form of autism.
But that doesn’t mean the study is useless. The Pentagon’s Office of Net Assessment that funded it has a long history of supporting eccentric research, recognizing that even misguided ideas can yield important insights. After all, ancient mariners were able to reliably reach their destinations using navigation aids that assumed the Earth was the center of the Universe.
