Prosecutor alleges man died from injuries while in custody of Baltimore police

BALTIMORE—A grand jury indicted six city police officers Thursday in the death of Freddie Gray, affirming the most serious charges brought by prosecutors, including second-degree murder and manslaughter.

But it appeared that Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby dropped a rare charge of false imprisonment initially leveled against the three arresting officers. The charge grew out of Ms. Mosby’s contention that Mr. Gray’s arrest was illegal.

All six officers face a new charge of reckless endangerment.

“As our investigation has continued, additional information has been discovered, and as is often the case during an ongoing investigation charges can and should be revised, based upon the evidence,” Ms. Mosby said at a news conference.

The most serious charge of second-degree “depraved heart” murder, carrying a maximum prison sentence of 30 years, was brought against Officer Caesar Goodson, who drove the van carrying 25-year-old Mr. Gray after his arrest on April 12. Three others—Lt. Brian Rice, Sgt. Alicia White and Officer William Porter—face involuntary manslaughter charges.

Arraignments for the officers are set for July 2. Lawyers for the six didn’t respond to requests for comment or declined to comment. A lawyer for one of the officers has said none did anything wrong.
