From http://www.overthrow.com/faq.asp we read:

"According to coverage of the 1992 US presidential elections, Bill White, age 15 at the time, received one of the first votes for President of the United States, when one of the 11 voters of the town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, wrote on their ballot 'William White, Utopian Anarchist Party'." (4)

But.....Here are the qualifications for being elected President of the U.S.A. :

Age and Citizenship requirements - US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Am I missing something here? ( I don't recall other than showing proof that I am registered to vote in a particular county upon entering a local polling place; plus I only know of the boxes one is to check off the candidate you are rooting for on your card.)

If the jurisdiction where you live permits write-in votes, then you can write in any name you want, regardless of qualifications. However, to register as a candidate, and to be subsequently certified by the Division of Elections as a candidate, and to be allowed to serve if elected, one must meet the legal criteria. So Bill White obviously was not a registered and certified candidate at the age of 15. Someone wrote in his name as a protest vote.

In Alaska, all write-in votes are combined and simply tallied under the label of "Write-In".

Mickey Mouse doesn't exist and, therefore, cannot be elected president. Yet Mickey receives hundreds of write in votes each election.

Thank you for the input, guys. I live in a small county, and have never seen a "write-in" thing on my ballot...Thanks for educating me on it!
