A year or so ago they had a black girl for "Miss Irish Canadian", or something like that. It's the Jews.

My mom and dad had a game called "Oregon Trail III" on their computer. It came with the computer. They were letting my niece and nephew play it. They thought it must be a good game since me and my sister played the old "Oregon Trail" game on our apple clone and enjoyed it.

It's the same game but with lots of eye and ear candy. One new feature is that you can talk to different people in the town and ask them questions. You choose a question and watch a short animation.

I was just thrilled to see a big fat thing that looked like a Samoan, at the Westport Landing, going "Howdy, pardner!" and giving advice about what should be purchased for the journey west. lol it just got worse after that.

That game got cleansed from mom's computer, needless to say.

Community Rallies Behind Teen

Poulsbo residents band together to support Miss Viking Fest.

Peggy Stanley says as Poulsbo residents are confronted by racist letters that seek to divide them, community members are reacting by coming together.

Stanley’s 17-year-old adopted daughter, Jasmine Campbell, was thrown into the center of controversy after organizers of Poulsbo’s Viking Fest received hateful letters about Campbell’s selection as Miss Viking Fest 2006. She’s the festival’s first black winner.

Last week, a handful of letter writers began sending racist e-mails to Viking Fest organizers criticizing the choice of Campbell in late April. They said the position should be held only by those of Scandinavian heritage, according to organizers.

"The more we kind of look at this, the more we feel it’s not from our community," Stanley said of the letters’ writers.

Poulsbo police said none of the writers appear to be local residents. [color="Blue"](yes, the police MUST investigate)

In fact, Stanley, Campbell and their family said they’ve received overwhelming support from the community.

While Campbell was being interviewed on television Tuesday in Poulsbo, a male stranger crossed the street, congratulated Campbell and expressed his desire to kick the letter writers out of the "gene pool," Stanley said.

Community groups are rallying to show support for Campbell and Viking Fest, which draws thousands of visitors each year from around the region for a Scandinavian-themed celebration honoring Norway’s Constitution Day.

Students at North Kitsap High School, where Campbell is a junior, discussed the issue. Local civil and human rights, religious and multicultural groups are working on ways to show their support.

Members of Common Threads — a fledgling group representing a wide array of North Kitsap interests that seeks to facilitate discussion about diversity — hope to march in the May 20 parade. They also plan to write letters to newspapers and to hold a community discussion.

Ray Rogers, president of the local NAACP chapter, said he will urge hundreds of members to attend the festival. The NAACP applauds the Viking Fest pageant committee for sticking behind its selection of Campbell.

The incident shows people that they should rally together even more to combat racism, Rogers said at a Common Threads meeting Tuesday.

"What affects you, affects Silverdale, Bremerton, South Kitsap," Rogers said. "We are linked already."

Lennie Meder, president of the Bremerton-based Ethnic Unity Coalition of Washington State, hopes the incident in North Kitsap gets everyone on the same page to battle racism.

"Make things happen for our kids," she said.

At least some of the letters may have originated from the Internet. Sgt. Bill Playter was unable to confirm whether any of the messages to the Viking Fest organizers came from a white supremacist Web site. [color="blue"](yes, by all means, please continue investigating. The FBI and ADL should be notified, as well.)

Message board discussions on one such site turn from chatter about people attending the festival to one of outrage after a forum member discovered Campbell’s photograph and her race.

Some respondents in the forums are from Gig Harbor and Tacoma, as well as several other states. Some included no information about their hometowns.

Several forum participants encouraged others to send e-mails to Viking Fest.
