New York, NY - An Israeli man was charged with stealing more than $1 million worth of art in Paris and trying to sell it in New York.Solly Sinai was arrested in Paris on a warrant stemming from a six-count indictment handed up in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. He is being held in Paris and didn’t have legal representation in New York.
The indictment accused Sinai of trying to sell items stolen during three burglaries in Paris beginning in spring 1997.
Among items stolen were 200 Japanese antique miniature sculptures, Napoleonic-era pistols valued at about $500,000, a decorative antique silver bowl and 104 bronze sculptures.
Sinai was charged and is being held by French authorities while the United States prepared an extradition package to bring him to the U.S. for trial.
If convicted, Sinai, 53, would face up to 10 years in prison on each count and fines of more than $1 million. [AP]
