Some 1,331 gay marriages took place in the French capital in 2014, making up 13.5 percent of the total number of weddings last year according to figures from city authorities.

Same-sex marriages have been legal in France since May 2013 despite significant protests by the country’s conservative opposition. Since the law was passed 18 months ago, some 2,365 gay couples have tied the knot in Paris, just over 14 percent of the total.

France’s INSEE national statistics office is due to publish nationwide same-sex marriage figures next week, but its 2013 figure shows the rest of the country lagging far behind the capital at just 3 percent of the total. In Paris, the vast majority of gay marriages (72 percent) took place in districts (arrondissements) with Socialist mayors, and around a third were celebrated in the 4th arrondissement, home to the historic and gay-friendly Marais district.

The well-heeled and conservative 16th arrondissement saw the lowest number of gay marriages at just 6.2 percent. According to a city hall spokesman the high number of same-sex unions, which are officiated by district and town mayors, was not a flash in the pan but hovered around a “steady level of around a hundred a month”.
