Police: Elderly woman who was beaten, raped dies

OMAHA, Neb. —The 93-year-old woman who police said was beaten and raped in her own home earlier this week has died.

Sergio Perez, 19, who faces charges in connection with the crime, is being held without bond in Douglas County.

Prosecutors said Perez, who doesn't speak English, beat and sexually assaulted the woman in her home Sunday.
She died Wednesday.

Prosecutors said Perez is not a legal resident of the United States. The victim’s family said a detective told them he has been in the country for about four months.

“She loved her family and her family loved her,” said Teresa Hartzell, the victim’s granddaughter. “She was all about family.”

Hartzell said her grandmother, Louise, was a strong woman with many stories and talents.

“(She was) a wonderful seamstress. We all got pajamas from her for Christmas, all the grandkids. She made her children’s clothes,” Hartzell said.
