I remember looking at the fluffier history books when I was a kid. Like those Time-Life books that are mostly photos. Hey, I was young.

The self-immolating monk of Vietnam War protest fame was in every single book. You'd think it was required by law. The crispy monk was everywhere.

I guess the gooks figured out how important that image is. Chinese enforcers must have standing orders to stop photogenic suicides at all costs.
