T'PIKE NIGHTMARE

August 15, 2006 -- A Queens couple and their 2-year-old daughter were crushed to death on the New Jersey Turnpike yesterday in a horrific chain-reaction collision caused by an out-of-control 18-wheeler hauling bricks, authorities said.

A second family also was devastated. A New Jersey woman was killed and her two kids were injured, along with a Bronx woman.

Rescuers in Teaneck tried in vain to save little Victoria Christmas of Astoria, who had been sitting in the back seat of her family's Nissan Altima strapped in a child safety seat alongside her older sister, Theresa, 4.

Theresa miraculously survived the horrendous 1:30 p.m. accident four miles from the George Washington Bridge. She was in fair condition at University Hospital of Newark.

The kids and their parents, Theresa, 41, a speech therapist and [color="Red"]Charles, 40, a stay-at-home dad, were returning from a Maryland vacation when they were rammed from the rear by the brick-hauling flatbed, police said.

The driver was unable to stop the giant rig as it approached traffic that had slowed down.

It skidded against the guardrail, then clipped a Mitsubishi Eclipse, before striking the Altima, sending it careening into the side of another tractor-trailer.

That truck flattened the Christmas' car when it jackknifed.

Relatives and friends in Astoria hugged and cried uncontrollably when they heard the tragic news.

"They're gone! They're gone!" cried Loretta Dagliolo, an aunt.

She said the dad was a former cook who stayed home to care for the kids while his wife worked at the Louis Armstrong Middle School in Queens.

Stunned neighbor Eva Tronbetta, 75, said, "I'm shaking. I've known her all my life. They were beautiful people." She described the kids as "two dolls."

Speaking of those who died, "If anybody is going to heaven they are."

Friend Steve Service said the family had been on holiday in Ocean City and decided to stay an extra day.

The accident also killed Norma Ryan, 37, of Voorhees, N.J., who was driving a Toyota 4Runner. She was struck by the flatbed as it began to flip and scatter bricks across the roadway.

Three passengers in that vehicle - her kids Peter, 12 and Samantha Ryan, 1, and Maria Rosado, 64, of The Bronx - were in critical condition at Hackensack University Hospital with internal injuries.

Ryan's brother-in-law, who asked not to be identified, said, "Norma was such a wonderful mother. Sunday was her kid's first birthday. I was there. I can't believe it. Everyone is in shock and total distress."

A driver who witnessed the deadly crash said the flatbed truck carrying the bricks was driving fast in the right lane when traffic began to slow down.

"Traffic was backed up. I saw the red light [of the cars in front of the truck]. The tractor-trailer saw them too late so he tried to avoid it, and hit the car," said the 57-year-old man, who asked not to be identified.

"He slammed on the brakes. He went to the right and hit the guardrail. He was skidding on the guardrail and something caused him to bounce in the air. He was going too fast and he had a lot of weight."

He said the careening tractor-trailer flipped upside down.

Charges are pending against the truck driver, Dimitrios Tseperkas, 46, of Port Jefferson, L.I., pending the results of an investigation, officials said.

The truck is registered to DTF Logistics at the same address.
