This Alan Grayson has to be one of the most loutish pieces of filth to walk into congress. Even the mainstream media has been critical of Grayson for his grotesquely misleading and over-the-top negative ads.
During his brief time in Congress, U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson has earned a reputation as a no-holds-barred critic of his foes and of Washington officialdom, one who seems to relish watching others squirm under his withering verbal jabs.
But in recent days, the freshman Democrat from Orlando has taken plenty of heat himself for campaign ads against his Republican opponent, former state lawmaker Daniel Webster.
Much of the criticism showered on Grayson is related to his TV commercials — one of which implies Webster was a draft dodger and one that labels Webster “Taliban Dan” for Webster’s remarks on marriage to an audience at a religious conference last year.
Grayson, the critics maintain, has crossed a line by questioning Webster’s patriotism in one ad and twisting his words.
Grayson’s campaign answers that the incumbent’s critique of Webster is tough but on solid ground.
“The only thing you could complain about in these ads is the style, because the facts are 100 percent true,” said Sam Drzymala, Grayson’s campaign manager.
The voiceover in Grayson’s commercial questioning Webster’s lack of military service says the 28-year veteran of the Florida Legislature “refused the call to service” six times during the Vietnam War. Webster, the voice adds, “doesn’t care about us.”
The commercial closes with text that reads: “If Daniel Webster didn’t serve America then, why should he serve now?”
Records from the Selective Service System indicate that between May 1967 and November 1970 Webster was given five deferments while he attended school, including as a high school senior and as a student at Georgia Tech.
He was declared fit to be drafted in June 1971, then was rejected for service after a physical exam in July 1971.
