Cracking the (dress) code
Are dress codes that restrict huge T-shirts and the sort of head-wear associated with black culture right?
No, said Kingston barber shop owner Brian Coley, moments after he finished cutting a Kingston High School student's hair. To outlaw traditionally black garb by claiming that it encourages gangs and crime just adds to the insult, he said.
"Forcing people to dress differently doesn't solve the problem, it only cloaks the problem," Coley said, brushing clippings from his first-chair slot at the Broadway shop, Up in the Cut.
A few blocks away, taking a break from preparing for the new school year, Kingston High School Principal Marie Anderson defended her school's anti-baggy shirt, anti-baggy pants, anti-"do-rag" dress code. Still, she concurred with Coley's belief that the absence of gang-linked clothing won't eliminate gang influences.
"To a certain extent, I have to agree with that," said Anderson. "That's why we didn't necessarily go into a dress code because of a gang problem. We went into a dress code because we wanted to establish a standard of appearance in preparation for school."
While the do-rag restriction is hip hop- or gang-related, many of the other dress code restrictions cull other perceived negatives, such as those brought into youth culture by mighty white musicians.

Either school admins have just gotten fed up and drawn the

128 students suspended at Ind. school
The Associated Press
HAMMOND, Ind. - Classrooms were a little less crowded at Morton High School on the first day of classes: 128 students were sent home for wearing the wrong clothes.
Fed up with inappropriate outfits, the principal suspended the students for one day Wednesday, minutes after doors opened at the school. Those suspended represent more than 10 percent of the 1,200 total students.
The offending attire — including baggy pants, low-cut shirts, tank tops and graphic T-shirts — are banned from classrooms. Students were also cited for cell phone use.
"This was the worst year I've seen in a long time," said Principal Theresa Mayerik.
"It's gotten out of control, and we needed to send a message that we're not messing around."
The Hammond school usually has 20 dress code violations a day.
Mayerik said the infraction would be removed from students' records in 12 weeks if they had no other in-school violations.
School board members said they support Mayerik and the mass suspensions. "I'd be supportive if half the school was sent home, because 99 percent will get the message our schools are for education," board president Rebecca Ward said.
