Marion County Jail Employee Fired After Witness and Suspect Put in Same Cell Block

A clerk in the Marion County jail who was fired yesterday now faces a criminal investigation. The sheriff fired Lashonna Collins for placing Brandon Rider in the same cell block with two men he had testified against. Rider's testimony later helped convict David Owens and Lee Guzman of murder, but first rider wrote a letter changing his story.

"He tried to push an emergency call button, the murderer prevented him from doing so and had several of his buddies around and essentially forced this witness to write a bogus letter saying that everything that he had said before about who had done what when was a lie," said Marion County prosecutor Carl Brizzi.

The prosecutor says Owens and Guzman forced him to write the letter and, he says, its the second time Collins put a witness in jeopardy.

"It happened several weeks ago in another trial in which the actual witness was intimidated to the point where he refused to testify," said Marion County prosecutor Carl Brizzi.

In that case Anwar Jones avoided conviction on a murder charge though he will go to prison a lesser charge of reckless homicide. The Sheriff's Department spokesman says Collins violated a jail policy.

"So she had to override what the computer was asking her to do which was to keep them separated. She actually put them in the same cell block," said Captain Phil Burton, Marion County Sheriff's Department.

Collins worked in the jail for a year. Prosecutors say they don't know her motive, but the investigation just started.

"We're going to be exploring as to other witnesses who took the stand and recanted that were in custody and whether or not this particular employee had any dealings with them," Brizzi said.

A grand jury will decide what charges Lashonna Collins may face. Possibilities include official misconduct, obstruction of justice, and intimidation.
