Police Say Racist Graffiti In Southaven Not A Hate Crime

Southaven, Mississippi Police say the racist graffiti painted on the mailboxes of five African American families in the Shelburne Estates community is not being a considered a hate crime.

Chief of Police, Tom Long says his department forwarded information about the case on to federal authorities who say at this time, the case does not meet the criteria of what is considered a hate crime.

Vandals painted the letters KKK on the families' mail boxes. So far, the consensus among Southaven police and residents is that kids are responsible for the vandalism. Police say the materials used to paint the letters are a good indication kids are behind the vandalism. Honey, ketchup and shaving cream was also smeared on the boxes.
