Barbadian lawyer charged in alleged racist attack

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, October 18, 2006 (7:59 am) - A Barbadian lawyer has been charged in what a Barbadian newspaper has been playing up as a racist crime.

The Nation newspapers of Barbados published articles in their weekend editions, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday the side of the family of a black teenager who said that he was beaten by two white men while walking through the middle class neighbourhood of Highgate Gardens, a few miles south of the capital Bridgetown.

On Sunday, the Barbados police who said they could not locate Mark Winston Goodridge, the 53 year old lawyer, put out a notice for him to turn himself in. He did that yesterday and last night was charged, together with his 23-year old son, Simon Mark, of causing serious bodily harm to the teen.

The attorney is also charged with incitement to racial hatred, assault, and discharging a firearm within 100 yards of the highway.

The police were called and the boy was charged with unlawful possession of a pair of scissors and trespassing. He has been remanded to the Government Industrial School (a detention centre for juveniles) for having the scissors but the trespassing charge was dismissed.

His family is crying racism prompting the Nation newspapers to report their side of story.

However, Sarah Goodridge, the daughter of the attorney has been circulating the Goodridges' side of the story in an email to close friends.

"You may be thinking: Well if it is not racism then what? How about we come home to find tow trespassers, we see one has a weapon and tries to use it," she said adding that it was she who telephoned the police and maintained that it was not a racist attack.
