Remember when Macedonia gave refuge to hunted Albanian sub-Humans and Gypsie Pigs? Well, read on, Volks. This is the thanks Macedonia gets for their naiveness :
"....Washington and Brussels had praised the government for preventing a Macedonian nationalist backlash against the laws, a crucial part of the 2001 Ohrid peace accord which ended 7 months of guerrilla conflict.
"I think that one of the coalition parties sees its place in government as an instrument for the partial implementation of the political processes of the Ohrid agreement," he said, in a clear reference to the Democratic Union for Integration of ethnic Albanian former guerrilla leader Ali Ahmeti.
"They promote only their own national and party ends."….The defeat of the November 7 referendum by no means ended Macedonia's ethnic problems. About 500,000 Macedonians, or one in three, voted to reverse the laws despite calls for a boycott from the government and from it powerful Western backers……. Its bid to join the European Union depends on mending ethnic divisions.
But nationalists believe the coalition government is bowing too far to Western demands and that dividing local government on ethnic lines will split the country -- which many suspect remains the goal of Albanian leaders.
Ethnic stability is vital to Macedonia, which could be vulnerable to any spillover in 2005 from its northern neighbor Kosovo, the volatile Serbian province ruled since 1999 by the United Nations..."
