TNR Horripilates Over Return of Walt & Mearsheimer

Organizing a lobby (CAIR) to contest the jews? If its effective, it’s anti-semitic. If they can frame you out of the game, you can’t win. Being called “anti-semitic” is a sign that you just might be headed in the right direction.

THE RETURN OF WALT AND MEARSHEIMER:

Do you remember John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt? They are the two politics professors–the first at the University of Chicago, the second at Harvard’s JFK School–who this spring published in the London Review of Books a shortened version of their enormous (half text, half footnotes) article posted on the K School website that purported to prove that U.S. foreign policy was run by the Jews for the interests of Israel and Israel alone. All of it was quackery. Much of it was just plain concoction. They had a two-week run in the prints and blogs … and then, poof, they disappeared. They and their hatched analysis of the origins and purposes of U.S. strategy in the world.

They reappeared yesterday at the National Press Club. But under whose auspices? you may ask. Well, it certainly wasn’t a scholarly sponsor. Or, for that matter, even a barely reputable political group. Mearsheimer and Walt were speaking about their favorite topic–the pernicious influence of the Jews–under the auspices of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Now, CAIR is a strange organization. It could barely bring itself to criticize 9/11 and did so only after much hiccupping, that is, denying that Muslims do such things. Ah, innocence. Cair is not offended by jihadists or jihad. It traffics in … well, yes, anti-Semitism. It’s no surprise that M & W should be heroes to this group. How heroic are they to CAIR? Read Dana Milbank’s article in this morning’s Washington Post and you’ll find out.

For what TNR published on “The Israel Lobby,” the document that brought the two academics fame and folly, see here, here, here, and here.

Understanding these types of editorials is always easier with simple visual aids: Martin Peretz, and Marty Peretz on the neocon right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Peretz

Martin Peretz (also Marty Peretz) is a Harvard lecturer who is co-owner and editor-in-chief of The New Republic, which he purchased in 1975. Under his leadership, the magazine has generally maintianed its liberal and neoliberal positions on economic and social issues, and assumed moderately hawkish and strong pro-Israel stances in foreign affairs. Some critics have accused Peretz of steering TNR towards neoconservatism.

Media critic Jack Shafer has described Peretz as a self-promoter, braggart, Arab-hater, name-dropper, and bad writer. Shafer 1991 examination of the 90-plus pieces Peretz inserted into The New Republic found Peretz repeatedly explaining his theory that there are no Arab nations only violent tribal groups with no allegiance to their countries.

      “…well, yes, anti-Semitism”

I see more of this all the time, “uh, yeah, well, hmm, . . . anti-semite”

They’re worried the phrase is getting worn out.

I watched C-span when Walt and Mearsheiner were discussing the Israel Lobby and I was impressed by the fact that neither backed down from their original premise. They defended themselves very well against a variety of criticisms and their logic was irrefutible. It is always a pleasure to see the curtain pulled back from the Israel Lobby and have it exposed for what it really is, a ruthless foreign power which has gained control of American foreign policy. More and more people are waking up.
