Quick Movie Review

Fantasticks

The Fantasticks (United Artists Films, 1995, starring Jean Louisa Kelly and Joe McIntyre).

This musical about a mysterious carnival was originally an off-Broadway play, which first premiered in 1960, with music by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones.

So impressed was I with the music and singing in The Fantasticks that I can almost (repeat: almost) forgive the occasional left-wing themes found within it. Despite the movie’s faults, I think the music easily rises to the top, overpowering the negative points in the film. (A couple of Blacks appear in it, but thankfully, very briefly).

I give this movie a rating of 8 3/4 points out of 10.

First off, I appreciate Soc’s recommendation for Celines’ Journey to the Edge of Night, as well as Jethro Tull’s A Passion Play. This too is a good recommendation. I know the late Jewish star of Law and Order, Jerry Orbach, was in the original B’way production. Is The Fantasticks still running? I also know it holds the record for being the longest-running show in B’way history, even longer than Cats or A Chorus Line.

Kevin is the kind of white trash who would take his date to monster truck rallies and titty-bars. If he had a date, that is, which he doesn’t.

Ha; you’re way off, T. McG. And while I’m hear, let me add that I really like your comments. I was simply joking about the choice of movie to review; I would expect something much more “macho” on this site. No harm intended.

btw, I dislike strip clubs, I’m not into monster trucks, and my girlfriend is a descendant of Charlemagne. No lie.

        Peace.

I’ve never seen the movie. Didn’t even know there was one. The original play ran on Broadway from 5/3/60 until it closed 1/13/02, the longest running play on Broadway. It has been done elsewhere all over the world as well. There was a revival of the play off Broadway, at the Snapple Theatre, in New York, a while back, and it appears to still be running today.

It contains one of my all time favorite songs: Try to Remember. It was done by the Brothers Four way back in the sixties, and is a beautiful song. It’s the kind of melody and lyrics that, sadly, White children no longer hear or even know exists. When I hear it, I am immediately transported back to the days before this country or the White race was ruined–back to my childhood when dreams still existed.
