“The Widow of Saint-Pierre” (2000; starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil, in French with English subtitles).
This movie is a departure of sorts, since, for once, being liberal has severe consequences, as a French army captain/jail warden and his wife find out on a remote, French island (Saint-Pierre) located off of Newfoundland in 1849-1850. They get too friendly with a condemned murderer who will soon face the guillotine. In the end, they pay dearly for that. It’s based on a true story, by the way. With no negroes, Mexicans or queers, and some good acting and scenery, this movie is better than average, despite any liberal messages within it. It’s available on DVD.

Wait, this movie takes place in the mid 19th century on a small island off the coast of Newfoundland and there’s no George Lopez, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy or Jackie Chan in it??? No computer animation showing cool looking robots fighting each other with laser swords or wisecracking dinosaurs with yiddish accents? No heavy metal soundtrack? It doesn’t sound like an historically accurate picture to me.

…a stern James Earl Jones as an expert defence attorney ulimately gets the couple off of death row, all the while showing the shallowness of a judicial process influenced by hate filled locals.

Almost any film directed by Patrice Leconte is worth watching, although Americans may not take to the commercially oriented Bronzés series. Others available on Region 1 DVDs include The Man on the Train, The Hairdresser’s Husband, My Best Friend, The Girl on the Bridge, and Ridicule. C’mon, Tim. The soundtrack would have to be hip-hop. Maybe they could re-title the picture as, “Da booty ah Saint-Pierre.” Yes, that’s much more tolerant.

LOL. I can’t help noticing that fact, when I’m forced to watch (as on airplanes) these sily animated movies that are so popular lately. Their characters, in gestures and speech — even if they’re crocodiles or termites or buzzards or dinosaurs — are all remarkably Yiddish!
No self-respecting dinosaur would ever talk that way!
