House GOP launches probe of Wikipedia editors over alleged bias in Ukraine, Israel articles

WASHINGTON — House Republicans launched an investigation this week into claims that US academics and foreigners are conspiring to make bad-faith edits to Wikipedia to manipulate public opinion about Israel and Ukraine.
The collaborative online encyclopedia is the 11th-most-visited US website and often is a first stop for researching a topic or public figure. It also feeds AI tools like Google Gemini and ChatGPT.
House Oversight Committee Republicans on Wednesday demanded information from Wikipedia, citing allegations of tampering detailed by the Atlantic Council, a pro-Ukraine think tank, and the Anti-Defamation League, a group that opposes antisemitism.

The ADL, meanwhile, said in a March report that it found evidence that “at least 30 editors circumvent Wikipedia’s policies in concert to introduce antisemitic narratives, anti-Israel bias, and misleading information.”

(MENAFN) US lawmakers have initiated an investigation into Wikipedia amid accusations that the platform spreads anti-Israel and anti-Ukraine narratives and promotes “coded hate” through the ‘early life’ sections of biographies.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a group focused on combating bigotry and anti-Semitism, previously accused Wikipedia of harboring anti-Israel bias, pointing to a coordinated effort by around 30 editors emphasizing criticism of Israel. Similarly, the Atlantic Council think tank alleged that pro-Kremlin and anti-Ukrainian messages have been promoted on the platform through links to Russian-affiliated sources.
Investigative journalist Dominic Michael Tripi reported that the committee may be pressuring Wikipedia to remove ‘early life’ sections from personal pages after the ADL labeled these sections—often detailing ethnicity, religion, and birth gender—as “coded hate” used to facilitate harassment.
