11-year-old girl helps take down 3 alleged burglars

An 11-year-old girl single handedly took down three alleged burglars. When she saw three strangers outside her home, she sensed danger and ran to the bathroom and locked the door. While she was hiding, she called 911. She says she’s just happy deputies got there in time.

Sarah Smith, 11, endured a frightening encounter with three burglars on Wednesday. Home alone, she says she first heard knocking on the door.

"I've had a couple people do that before and I don't know them. I mean, if you don't know them, my mom told me not to answer the door," said Sarah.

A few minutes later, the knocking started again. She called her mother, Robyn Winegard, at her job to tell her what was going on.

"She says, ‘Oh my God, they're back with gloves on,’" said Winegard.

With the suspects still outside the house, Sarah made another call. This time, it was to 911.

"He came up to the door and he started playing around with the knob and I ran to my mom's bathroom," said Sarah.

Winegard said she was completely panicked and felt helpless.

"Oh my God they're going to get in, and there's nothing I can do. I'm so far away," said Winegard.
