One of the things the Canadian said that helped me understand the jumpings - about how the heat from behind was so intense that the folks who jumped were being "cooked" and sought the only cooler air - outside the window. That scenerio is blood-curling, but, it is one that I can accept - meaning I could see how I myself might jump if I were being cooked and didn't have any other way out.

The mystery caller's story about the phones (working outstide but not inside), and the earphones on some others that DID WORK, is also something that suggests a prior plan utilizing newer technology. It sounds credible and someone with knowledge about this newer technology could make a post here about it.

The idea behind the "pulse engine", whereby aluminum-oxide enriched thermite charges would be detonated by precision-timed remote control DOES explain the intense heat (as opposed to the far-fetched ideas involving a less-than-critical-mass atomic explosion), and, that is why I was hoping someone knowledgeble about advanced pyrotechnology could make a post here about it.

The problem, with this "pulse-engine" scenario, seems to be the amount of preparation involved - how could that be done without regulars in the building not noticing something? He explained how they could do it in an airplane (utilizing that facility in Canada he spoke about), but, doing this work in the elavotor shaft, or the support columns, would almost certainly require a lot of time and in so many areas of the building that folks would notice something is up (no?).
