I finished reading Pentti Linkola's Can Life Prevail? this week and I was wondering if some of you -- either natives of Finland or those well-versed in Finnish ecological issues -- could tell me whether or not his argument against cats in Finland is sound.

Along with some great essays focusing on the broader deep ecological issues of the world, Linkola's first English language book contains a number of chapters that are provincial and rather boring to non-Finnish readers. Although he targets other species he sees as being non-native and damaging to wildlife(Canadian Wild Goose, mink, etc.), Linkola's chapter on the extermination of cats disturbed me and seemed fundamentally non-Germanic (think of how intertwined cats are with Freya and Germanic lore and culture in general), and I was wondering if there was any validity to his argument, which goes pretty much as such:

Cats are not native to Finland, but were rather brought there for the "now antiquated purpose of rodent control." They are frequently let loose and have devastated the Finnish woodlands, exterminating several species of birds and other wildlife. During the winter, when there is nothing to hunt, they freeze or starve to death, resulting in a cruel and perpetual cycle of abuse. I know this all sounds very bizarre, but he is very serious about it indeed. He also thinks we must "reevaluate our willingness to eat human flesh!" I hope I never get trapped under an avalanche with him!

If Linkola's premises are sound, I must accept his conclusion. Tell me, fellow VNNers, is Linkola correct? Should the kittie holocaust begin?
