I am planning to kill some innocent little bambi this year. I've never done it before, and I generally don't eat meat - I'm not a vegetarian, but I choose to avoid meat because of my political opposition to industrialized farming (see peta vids, etc). Nevertheless, I intend to kill and choke down a deer this season because, considering the economic meltdown possibilities, I think it is important to have the skill and experience. So I'd like to hear from the experienced hunters on a couple issues. First, is it a bad idea to bow hunt my first deer? I have a crossbow that I am comfortable with, but I'll likely be hunting alone and I don't have any experience in tracking fatally wounded things. Second, is it reasonable to suppose I could field dress a deer by myself without ever having been directly instructed? I've watched a load of YouTube videos and read all about it. A friend once told me I'd likely barf on my first one, but I have a pretty strong stomach and I guess a little vomiting is good for the soul anyway. Third, what is the minimum size plot of land a person should hunt on? I am a few miles from a state wma, but I live on about 3ac and have a busy little spring on the property that would make the hunting very easy. Lastly, should I do a few warm-up kills and dressings on some varmints or something? As I said, I've never really hunted anything and this whole field dressing thing is entirely new to me. I was thinking a few sacrificial squirrel test runs might be a good idea. Maybe a crow? Help me out here.
