Hello, just to add that the Russians whipped the Japanese at the Battle of Khalkin Gol, also in August 1945 they swept the Japanese out of northern Manchuria with an army of over a million men. Part of the reason that Japan surrendered was that it preferred American to Soviet occupation. Many more Japs were killed by conventional firebombing than by the nuclear bombs.

As far as the average Russian goes, there is in my opinion, not much to like about them so far. Actually the practice of abusing POWs by the Japanese imperial forces did not become commonplace until the wars in 1931-1945. Russia did get them back for the 1905 war in 1945 though. In 1905 they pulled the same shit they did in 1941 on America- pretending to negotiate while launching a surprise attack. The Soviet revenge consisted in notifying the Japanese embassy in Manchuria of their war declaration- then when the ambassador tried to call up Tokyo to warn them, he found that the phone lines had been cut. The Soviet attack begun minutes after.
